Introduction

the Salk Institute

designed by Louis Kahn

Party at the Salk Institute by Heinrich Klotz

I was astonished when I saw the first photograph, I was so addicted to Louis Kahn’s tranquil space, which aroused my passion for architecture. Gradually, I grew to be fond of the second photograph about Salk Institute. The personage and objects in the middle of the photography were relieved against the blue sky and ocean and the elegant gray buildings. The foreground was about harvest time, yellow haymow and fresh fruits. Mid-shot and background were about many tables and chairs, I believed there would hold speeches and performance activities. The square space which Louis Kahn created satisfied the needs to hold large-scale speeches. The long-range perspective was about a new temporary theater instead of quondam boundless sea. When the night screen had hung down, there would be many glamorous performances, so the quondam and sacred space was replaced by various activities. The empty space began to connect with human life, which moves me the most. What I have always pursued for is to be a good architect. I hope my architecture designs are the integrity of human-oriented needs, which including the basic functions and subtle human scales and tracking movements. The architect should facus on the life of common people and the spaces connected to it.

Place the block into site and the building is 5 storey high to match the surronding

Place two slabs on the two sides of the building to face the street.

Make the terrace towards the south and let the light get into the building.

Dig the space into the block to make the entrance of the apartment.

Concept Diagram To face the different needs of local residence, I design 10 different units to match the people group from single person to a large family. The idea behind the building is simiple: Every units will have a small outside countyard.

Oblique Drawing in Site Form the oblique drawing in the site, we could see that the whole building is based on a square modular system, which is 10",10" square to contain the space. Because of the help the system, I could design the living space and the terrace or the facade in a logic way. In this case, the small units for the single people only has three squares space and the large familyparents with two kids and their old parents would have 10 square space in the building. The terrace also follow the square pattern of the building to have different materials as the pavement such as the different kinds of grass, the sand and the yellow ceramic tile ground.

Building Facade Towards the Vermont Ave The costom organization of differen units would generate the new kind of the facade and the outside countryard would left more opening of the elevation. I choose the corrugated metal as the main material for the facade towards the Vermont Ave. The colorful painting of the wall would enrich the visual quality of the facade.

Food Truck Restaurant Design Academic Design Studio Location: Los Angeles Date: 2018.9-2018.12 Group Work for Board Games Teammates: Bike Qu, Forest McMillin, Xue Bai Individual Work for Architecture Design Tutor: Jose Sanchez

There is an old market and restaurant locating at the western region of USC, which we think could been re-design to meet the needs of location.

We perfer to use the board game method to begin the thinking of how could the architecture could benefits their surrondings. We design the different space pieces such as the green space, restaurant and market to play with.

Food Truck Park Board Game We choose the food truck near to site to help us to play the board game and have more results in the site. The shape and space of the building could be slided by the motion trails of the food trucks. Through the gameplaying of the board game. we could play different results such as a good restaurant and combiniing with a market and green landscape.

Discrete Architecture We want to discover a new method to generate the detailed elements of the building. To use the simple componets to generate the dynamic forms, we should use the parts so called "Elobe parts" to change the direction of the the chunks. However, the porportion of the baisc elements and elobe elements should be 4:1 to ensure the form not becoming so wired.

Interior Perspective The columns of the building have the same directions with the facade. All the enclosure of the building is 45 degree toward the sky. Different layers of the wall could form different layers of the space, which could be defined as the eating space, greem space and the maket space.

Section Perspective

Outdoor Perspective From the elevation of the building, we could see the pattern of the components and the direction of the elements. The different gap of the facade would become the entrance of the building. To enforce the dynamic form of the building, the small column also become oblique.

ARCHITECTURE NEWSPAPER T H E D I P LO M A P RO J E C T A S K WE TO EXPLORE PREFABRICATE SYSTEM

C h i n a i s a f a s t- b u i l t c o u n t r y. H o w e v e r, influenced by uncertain architecture atmosphere and unskilled constructing technologies, the quality of the finished building always has many problems. We believe the prefabricated technique can solve these problems well. Because such technology can reduce the pressure of workers by dispersing all the stress from the construction site to constructing workers. In the meantime, the construction quality can also be greatly improved.

A NEW CONSTRUCTIVE SUSTEM HAS CAME OUT AND THIS SYSTEM CAN BE BUILD IN A SHORTER TIME

Domino System

New System

Based on the pouring technology of reinforced concrete, the traditional domino system heavily relies on and restricted by the on-site construction technology and environment. Meanwhile, its linear architecture construction calls for four steps: (1) To make the concrete frame; (2), to construct the vertical side and space division; (3), to add the pipelines and the ceiling; (4), to replenish the room with furniture. The whole process can be improved by using prefabricated constructive system. We can divide the construction system into four parts: the pillar, the girder, the floors

THE NEW SYSTEM ALSO COULD REACTED FROM THE SPACE OF THE UNITS AND THE STRUCTURE

connected with secondary beam and the shear wall. Different overlapped details among the four elements ensure the elements closely overlapped. Because the hollow girder and the shear wall themselves can through the pipelines, reserved ceiling room can be ignored. Since under the new system, elements production, the on-site overlapped construction and pipelines installation can be done at the same time, more buildings can be constructed faster and better.

PM 8:00 All pivoted window are opened and the water reflect the light from the hall. Hearing the music and the seeing the light from the building, many passer-by are curious about the activity and want to have a look.

Part 2

This section is my own-designed or participant projects excerpts and all have a profound impact on my design concept. All designs are based on the actual sites. Such as the design of 07. Medium Garden was inspired by a large number of abandoned drawing boards at the teaching building of Architecture. The design of 06. PLAYTIME was influenced by the severe off-peak season of tourism in construction sites. At the same time, most of these programs are completed projects, which also assisted me to accumulate a lot experiences of building construction on site. In China, the implementation of all programs is very difficult. Sometimes the drawings on the computer are very weak at the scene, because the construction site itself is very complicated, and sometimes the construction team does not have the superb building technology that could be equivalent of the architects image. Such condition makes the constructive process become very uncontrollable. I think architects must have enough courage to accept the actual problems, carefully cooperate with the workers and bravely solve problems. Only in this way can make the design on the drawing be true.

The design begins with several times of investigation on the Dongshan Kou, the old downtown of Guangzhou. From the basic routes of investigation, we find out abandon places and buildings to renovate and design. The site have massive abandoned space and most of it is underground. Besides, there are many local youngsters who work on art and sports needing more spaces to practice and to exhibit their works. We want to use the abandoned spaces.

This project is an art exhibition shown in the FangSuo Bookstore, which is supported by the Guangdong Modern Dance Company (GMDC). They ask we to design the installation to help the public to understand the modern dance.Inspiring by the famous painting Nude Descending a stair case No.2 by Marcel Duchamp, we decided to catch every moment of a modern dancer to get the basic form. With three triangle pointing at the dancer's hand and knee, we could get a series of image of changing form of different triangle. When we overlap those images and we could express the whole process of a modern dancing. This design would help the public to understand the modern dance in a motionless point of view.

The client is an old resident living in Beijing Hutong for many years. I was mainly responsible for the upper part of the house—The stairs and steel frame, which serve as a quick access for the client to go to the roof and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air.
