the Salk Institute

designed by Louis Kahn

Party at the Salk Institute by Heinrich Klotz

I was astonished when I saw the first photograph, I was so addicted to Louis Kahn’s tranquil space, which aroused my passion for architecture. Gradually, I grew to be fond of the second photograph about Salk Institute. The personage and objects in the middle of the photography were relieved against the blue sky and ocean and the elegant gray buildings. The foreground was about harvest time, yellow haymow and fresh fruits. Mid-shot and background were about many tables and chairs, I believed there would hold speeches and performance activities. The square space which Louis Kahn created satisfied the needs to hold large-scale speeches. The long-range perspective was about a new temporary theater instead of quondam boundless sea. When the night screen had hung down, there would be many glamorous performances, so the quondam and sacred space was replaced by various activities. The empty space began to connect with human life, which moves me the most. What I have always pursued for is to be a good architect. I hope my architecture designs are the integrity of human-oriented needs, which including the basic functions and subtle human scales and tracking movements. The architect should facus on the life of common people and the spaces connected to it.

Place the block into site and the building is 5 storey high to match the surronding

Place two slabs on the two sides of the building to face the street.

Make the terrace towards the south and let the light get into the building.

Dig the space into the block to make the entrance of the apartment.

Oblique Drawing in Site

Concept Diagram

To face the different needs of local residence, I design 10 different units to match the people group from single person to a large family. The idea behind the building is simiple: Every units will have a small outside countyard.

Form the oblique drawing in the site, we could see that the whole building is based on a square modular system, which is 10",10" square to contain the space. Because of the help the system, I could design the living space and the terrace or the facade in a logic way. In this case, the small units for the single people only has three squares space and the large familyparents with two kids and their old parents would have 10 square space in the building. The terrace also follow the square pattern of the building to have different materials as the pavement such as the different kinds of grass, the sand and the yellow ceramic tile ground.

Building Facade Towards the Vermont Ave The costom organization of differen units would generate the new kind of the facade and the outside countryard would left more opening of the elevation. I choose the corrugated metal as the main material for the facade towards the Vermont Ave. The colorful painting of the wall would enrich the visual quality of the facade.

Ground Plan The ground plan has one restaurant and a retail shop near the street. The vehicle entrance of the building would just lead the cars go into the scend and third floor, which the parking lot located.

Food Truck Restaurant Design Academic Design Studio Location: Los Angeles Date: 2018.9-2018.12 Group Work for Board Games Teammates: Bike Qu, Forest McMillin, Xue Bai Individual Work for Architecture Design Tutor: Jose Sanchez

There is an old market and restaurant locating at the western region of USC, which we think could been re-design to meet the needs of location.

Food Truck Park Board Game We choose the food truck near to site to help us to play the board game and have more results in the site. The shape and space of the building could be slided by the motion trails of the food trucks. Through the gameplaying of the board game. we could play different results such as a good restaurant and combiniing with a market and green landscape. We perfer to use the board game method to begin the thinking of how could the architecture could benefits their surrondings. We design the different space pieces such as the green space, restaurant and market to play with.

We want to discover a new method to generate the detailed elements of the building. To use the simple componets to generate the dynamic forms, we should use the parts so called "Elobe parts" to change the direction of the the chunks. However, the porportion of the baisc elements and elobe elements should be 4:1 to ensure the form not becoming so wired.

Interior Perspective The columns of the building have the same directions with the facade. All the enclosure of the building is 45 degree toward the sky. Different layers of the wall could form different layers of the space, which could be defined as the eating space, greem space and the maket space.

Section Perspective

Outdoor Perspective From the elevation of the building, we could see the pattern of the components and the direction of the elements. The different gap of the facade would become the entrance of the building. To enforce the dynamic form of the building, the small column also become oblique.

New System

Based on the pouring technology of reinforced concrete, the traditional domino system heavily relies on and restricted by the on-site construction technology and environment. Meanwhile, its linear architecture construction calls for four steps: (1) To make the concrete frame; (2), to construct the vertical side and space division; (3), to add the pipelines and the ceiling; (4), to replenish the room with furniture. The whole process can be improved by using prefabricated constructive system. We can divide the construction system into four parts: the pillar, the girder, the floors connected with secondary beam and the shear wall. Different overlapped details among the four elements ensure the elements closely overlapped. Because the hollow girder and the shear wall themselves can through the pipelines, reserved ceiling room can be ignored. Since under the new system, elements production, the on-site overlapped construction and pipelines installation can be done at the same time, more buildings can be constructed faster and better.

CONSTRUCTION PROCESS Comparing with the old constructive system, the whole construction of the new system could be finished in a very short time, the workers could transport all components including the main beams, the floors, the column and the shear walls to the site. With help of the new system, workers could complete a building in a relative short time period.

DESIGN PROCESS

The begining of the design star ted from the basic data of a working people.1200mm*1500mm for Minimum station

Double the former stations then we could get The length of 6 meters for basic life

Double the Minimum station then we could get two stations and a passway.

Nowadays, amounts of Chinese architects remove their constrcution from the cities to the countrysides due to the increasing demands of the tourists came from cities. We should take care of the increasing functional needs of the tourists. Comparing with the local residents, the tourists also play an important role in the villages.

SITE MODEL 1:100 The resident and the tourists from different roads could notice the bridge immediately when they near the rivers. This building would be the fast entrance and bridge for the XiaoZhou Village. The resident would use this bridge to go outside and maybe they would be curious about what happened in the 2rd floor. And when the tourist wants to attend the village, they could choose to get into the building to have a rest.

SITE MODEL 1:100 The entrance of the building has a facade towards the village, we choose to use the glass to give the whole building a transparent shell. The people outside would look across the glass and find out what happened in the building.

AM 10:00 In the morning, there is a sculpture exhibition from the artists who are living in the Xiaozhou Village. the tourists would have a very close look to the sculpture and they can have a rest on the cushion of the floor.

PM 8:00 In the evening, the workers in the building re-oganize the space and there will be a small concert of a string quartet of the villages. The local residents and tourists all love the music and they could have interaction with others.

AM 10:00 All pivoted windows are closed and the window reflect the light from the sky. residents would notice many silhouettes inside the hall but they don't know what happened in the building.

PM 8:00 All pivoted window are opened and the water reflect the light from the hall. Hearing the music and the seeing the light from the building, many passer-by are curious about the activity and want to have a look.

Part 2

This section is my own-designed or participant projects excerpts and all have a profound impact on my design concept. All designs are based on the actual sites. Such as the design of 07. Medium Garden was inspired by a large number of abandoned drawing boards at the teaching building of Architecture. The design of 06. PLAYTIME was influenced by the severe off-peak season of tourism in construction sites. At the same time, most of these programs are completed projects, which also assisted me to accumulate a lot experiences of building construction on site. In China, the implementation of all programs is very difficult. Sometimes the drawings on the computer are very weak at the scene, because the construction site itself is very complicated, and sometimes the construction team does not have the superb building technology that could be equivalent of the architects image. Such condition makes the constructive process become very uncontrollable. I think architects must have enough courage to accept the actual problems, carefully cooperate with the workers and bravely solve problems. Only in this way can make the design on the drawing be true.

This design won the The Third-prize of Tallinn Pavilion Program Competition, Tallinn Biennial 2019. Combo-Nest is a discrete open-ended tectonic system, that relies on the patterning of material units to grow volumetrically with different motifs. We want to use the toy of our design to guide the local residence to design their own pavilion and help the community to participate in the whole process instead of that the architect designs everything. Our proposal believes that such a process of identifying culturally relevant patterns (what we could call beauty) is a process that is participatory and collaborative, in which architects can engage in a dialogue and develop consensus with the community. I participated in the design developing process and make the 3d-model and rendered it. I also charge for the 3D-printing part of the design and the final instruction diagram of the toy.

Combo House In Mountain Region

Combo House In Prairie Region When the Combinatorial Nest came to the real use for the people, seems that the combinatorial couldn't hold the basic use of the residence. The combo-house is prefabriced house what could fit different needs of people. By creating different shape of the Combinatorial Nest that could connected the house, the combinatorial could generate different space conditions for the resident. In this design, I mainly charged the image making parts of the whole process include the rendering and photoshop process. By putting the whole building in different site like the prairie, mountain and forest. We could see that the combinatorial Nest and Combo House have its own potiential to fit in different environment and have a lot of form potiantials.

08.the Dancing Moment

Installation Design Location:Guangzhou Date: 2016.7-2016.9 Group works Tutor:Jason Guo Collaborator:Ma Jianshen,Chen Xiangfan, Huang Danlei My works: Construction

This project is an art exhibition shown in the FangSuo Bookstore, which is supported by the Guangdong Modern Dance Company (GMDC). They ask we to design the installation to help the public to understand the modern dance.Inspiring by the famous painting Nude Descending a stair case No.2 by Marcel Duchamp, we decided to catch every moment of a modern dancer to get the basic form. With three triangle pointing at the dancer's hand and knee, we could get a series of image of changing form of different triangle. When we overlap those images and we could express the whole process of a modern dancing. This design would help the public to understand the modern dance in a motionless point of view.

The curator wants the traditional Chinese calligraphy could be approachable to normal modern people. The Chinese calligraphy now become more and more unsearchable to people and we think we could re-connect the bridge. We extract the trajecture of writing process of traditional calligraphy and we utilize the curvature of the trajectureto express the power of writing.

Residence Design Internship works Location: Beijing Date: 2016.10-2017.1 Tutor: James Shen, Zang Feng, He Zhe My works: Detail Design, Construction

When I was interning in the People's Architecture Office (PAO), I was selected to the Plug-in House program. We were asked to build a new house to satisfy the client's need. The client is an old resident living in Beijing Hutong for many years. I was mainly responsible for the upper part of the house—The stairs and steel frame, which serve as a quick access for the client to go to the roof and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. We use the Plugin Panels as the main material for building the bouse, which is a new kind of Polyurethane sandwich panel. This panel is only 50mm thick and has good heat-insulating property. Stairs

Representation Model

12.Drawing and Representation Assignment for Course Arch564 in USC Individual work Date: 2019.01-2019.05 Tutor: Yaohua Wang Course discripation: Geometry lies at the core of the architectural design process. It is omnipresent, from the initial formfinding stages to the actual construction. While design and geometry share a fundamental interest in form and shape, Descriptive and Computational Architectural Geometry aims to address the various natures of the historical relationship between mathematics, geometry, computation, and architecture. Through the display of historical mathematical models with formal affinities to contemporary architectural production, the course will provoke discussion about the origins of design technique, the epistemology of geometry models, and the justification for mathematical surfaces in architecture.

Representation Drawings In this Course, Yaohua told us to choose different historical drawings and represent the drawings in a new way. I pick up the drawing Design for a house with a castellated wing by John Smythson in 1600 as my final project. I notice that there exist different drawing are combing together in only one drawing such as the elevation, the axonometric drawing and the prespective drawing. I studied some drawings from Bryan Cantley and learned how to add more details to simply drawings. Finally, I give different spacial qualities to the drawings and produce the new model that would generate new spacial meanings.
