My life ... JAMIE MCFADDEN, MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS CONSULTANT AT JM COMMUNICATIONS How would you describe yourself ? I would say that I’m determined and ambitious, committed to my work and a people person (once I’m talking, good luck stopping me!). Where is home? And work? For me, home is Liverpool and with such a vibrant city centre right on my doorstep, I couldn’t imagine choosing anywhere else. Work takes me right across the North West. What did you want to be when you were younger? I’m sure I worked my way around every potential option and never really stuck to one. I had my heart set on a PR and media career by the time I’d reached Sixth Form though. Name a few of your favourite places to be… Well we’ve recently brought a Cocker Spaniel puppy (Otis) into our home, so my happy place is a long walk with Connor and him around Formby. If we’re talking holidays though, I don’t have the attention span to sit and read a book on the beach and would choose somewhere I can just roam aimlessly all day. I could wander the streets of Barcelona and struggle to get bored. What or who inspires you? As cliché as it may sound, I’m driven by the desire to be comfortable in life and happy. Life is to be enjoyed and I want to be able to make the most of that.
“

”
What was the last gift you gave someone? Well, we’ve recently celebrated my boyfriend’s 30th and I’ve booked to take him to New York to celebrate. But I’d rather selfishly say that is me just setting the bar ahead of mine next year – good luck Connor! Tell us a secret/fun fact? I’d say that my most random fact is that as a child I auditioned to be in the BBC show Waterloo Road. Obviously, I wasn’t successful and the actor who was, went on to get a BBC Radio 1 show and have a great TV career – but I’m not jealous at all! Who or what would you place in room 101? Reality TV shows – let’s save that rant for another day. Your mastermind subject? I’m the dead weight on a pub quiz team, but I am obsessed with the TV show ‘The Thick of It’ so I will choose that. What’s been your biggest life lesson? To just take the plunge. For so long I had an urge to do my own thing and be my own boss, but the fear put me off. I definitely don’t regret it – you only live once! jmcommunications.co.uk

A Cu Cutt Abo Abov ve Why renowned steakhouse, Upstairs At The Grill is still the ultimate spot for al fresco dining in Chester
N
ow summer has finally decided to put in an appearance, it’s time to embrace those ‘Rosé All Day’ vibes and book in some serious ‘terrace time’! And where better to soak up those golden rays than perched ‘atop’ of what has to be Chester’s ultimate al fresco destination, Upstairs At The Grill…. What could be better than dining under the sky, indulging in your favourite steaks, seafood and summer wines? The terrace at Upstairs At The Grill is an absolute gem. Refined and relaxed in equal measure, the attentive team, varied menu and sophisticated wine list have kept this place at the top of the tree when it comes to beloved City eateries. A super-bright space, with elegant décor and quirky little touches everywhere, this iconic spot shifts from a daytime retreat to a nighttime escape effortlessly. It’s the perfect spot for an intimate get-together, a place to unwind after a day in the city and the ideal location for a memorable celebration – whatever the occasion.
But is the food that is the real star… Famed for its outstanding steak selection, you will find everything from classic fillet and ribeye to the much larger Tomahawk and Porterhouse’s. Let’s not forget the more unusual cuts such as USDA Prime Delmonico and grain-fed Australian Black Angus Striploin. All the steaks here are hand-picked from leading UK and Irish producers, along with a selection of high-quality imported cuts. The team are hugely proud of their offering, which combines different breeds, farming practices and techniques, each of which creates a unique flavour and texture. All the steaks are aged for a minimum of 35 days in the salt chamber & cooked exclusively on a charcoal oven, this primal approach, along with the ageing, elevates the cuts to a whole new level in terms of flavour and tenderness.
But if you fancy something a little lighter, you won’t be disappointed…. Can you imagine anything that screams summer more than a delicate Tempura Oyster, bathed in Champagne vinegar topped with caviar espuma and parsley emulsion, accompanied by a crisp glass of Charles Heidsieck Brut Réserve? Another current favourite is the Coal-Roasted Whole Sea Bream, served on the bone with shrimp and gremolata butter. An often-under-appreciated fish, its beautiful crispy skin and white flaky meat can put it ahead of Seabass when cooked over coals.
For some full-on summer theatre, the Classic Caesar Salad is a popular staple too. Dressed, tossed and served at your table, the winning combination of crisp cos hearts, Parmesan, anchovies, brioche croutons and lashings of their signature homemade Caesar dressing, makes this hard to beat.
And did we mention the drinks? From their extensive wine collection, packed full of expertly selected wines, including one of the rarest selections of Californian wines in the UK, to their creative cocktail list, the drinks certainly take centre stage. The knowledgeable team and in-house sommelier are always on hand to guide you through the extensive wine list and make informed suggestions. The list offers over 120 wines from across the world, offering many different styles and includes all the favourites alongside many weird and wonderful for the more adventurous amongst us. upstairsatthegrill.co.uk 19

BRITISH
Standing tall in Mayfair, The Dorchester is a luxury London landmark and home for those who make the world turn. Kathryn Otto speaks to General Manager, Luca Virgilio
23
Feature | The CHESHIRE Magazine
The Dorchester has long been a treasured British landmark and boasts an exclusive art collection. Could you talk us through the collection and any favoured pieces? Since our renovation, we have collaborated with renowned art consultancy VISTO to curate a collection of contemporary works by British-based artists. This collection adorns the hotel’s newly designed interiors by Pierre-Yves Rochon and Martin Brudnizki. The inspiration for the collection comes from The Dorchester’s prime location, with Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens nearby. The artworks pay tribute to the British landscape tradition, reflecting the country’s rich history of garden and landscape design. This tradition dates back to the 18th century when England’s impressive gardens and manor houses attracted visitors from around the world. We feel that the art pieces create a seamless narrative throughout the hotel, offering guests a journey through a curated British landscape. Notably, two standout pieces (and also my favourite) are by Sophie Coryndon and Christian Furr. Coryndon’s work transforms the intricate details of a beehive into a golden masterpiece, celebrating the natural world and the hotel’s proximity to Hyde Park. Furr’s painting, on the other hand, depicts a vibrant scene of the Serpentine in Hyde Park, blending reality with imagination. The collection extends beyond the lobby, enhancing The Promenade, the bars, and the guest rooms, making the entire hotel a canvas of contemporary art. The hotel boasts a beautiful florist boutique led by designer florist Philip Hammond. What value does Philip and his team add to the overall presentation of The Dorchester? Philip and his team are extremely valuable to the presentation of the hotel. They worked to create our signature ‘Dorchester Rose’ which our guests love. It’s the perfect rose for The Dorchester, because of 22
The CHESHIRE Magazine | Regulars
its beautiful colour and blousy shape. Seven years in the making, the rose was created by Meijer Roses, a family company with a long tradition of creating the highest quality roses and selected The Dorchester to carry the name of this new variety. To achieve the desired characteristics of the perfect bloom, the research and development team at Meijer tested various blends of their popular existing Avalanche varieties. This specially selected rose is blousy in composition and has a pale blush colouring, with the pink tones developing as the rose opens. Philip invests so much time in the presentation of the hotel and the lobby especially. We have two large urns on either side of The Promenade which take 3 hours in total to fill, with two team members making and one person directing and passing up flowers to the platform where we make the arrangements. The other arrangements along The Promenade take the other team members approximately 4 hours. Each suite has its own individual look and feel. Could you tell us the design process and thought behind each suite? Many of our suites have been renovated with the entirety of the rooms being finalised later this year.
To give a more general overview on the process, the interiors have been re-envisioned by design firm Pierre-Yves Rochon, who have seamlessly blended the 1930s glamour that runs so deep in our DNA with contemporary edge. The design draws inspiration from our prized position in Mayfair and the charming eccentricities are reflected through a fresh elixir of colours to enhance the heritage of the hotel. The guest experience has been modernised for a residential style of comfort, whilst embracing the defining elements of the property’s past, including British stage designer Oliver Messel’s signature lavish style. Guests now walk into new light-filled, thoughtfully composed rooms and suites designed in varying colourways inspired by an English garden, from pale leaf green and rose fog pink, to heather blue and lemon yellow. Spanish Alarwool custom woven carpets adorn rooms and corridors, in keeping with the hotel’s signature carpet style, and select suites feature headboards hand-painted by de Gournay. Recognised for its classic English appeal, Colefax and Fowler’s floral fabrics enhance the walls and headboards in all guest rooms. Our rooms and suites are designed to convey the sense of a luxurious private residence, they represent a decrease from the original 250 keys, which was to account for more spacious accommodation. Guests can now choose from 19 room types ranging from Superior, Deluxe and Executive Park View Rooms to Executive Junior Suites, signature Dorchester Suites, Hyde Park Suites and more. These are in addition to the Oliver Messel Terrace Suite, which is protected by the hotel and retains its 1953 stylish origins. 23
During your time at the hotel, you will have been a part of many high-profile events and evenings. Are there any memories you can share? The Dorchester has always been seen as a place where the people who make the world turn come to meet, celebrate and enjoy each other’s company, so we have been fortunate enough to host many impressive events. In the two years since I joined I would say the two events that have stood out to me have been the party we co-hosted with ES and Perfect Magazine during Fashion Week last year to celebrate the reopening of the newly refurbished spaces. It was fun, vibrant and a truly captivating evening with a lot of exciting and glamorous people in attendance. The event was a true testament to our relaunch and revitalised energy we have brought into the hotel. I like to think we underwent not just a renovation but also a rebranding and repositioning and this was the big opening statement of our new chapter. Ever since we have attracted a much younger demographic while of course retaining the people who have loved the hotel across the years. The second one I am particularly attached to was the one we hosted this year in our Ballroom for the Pre-Oscars. It was so well attended and feel we brought some luck as four of the actors and actresses in attendance actually ended up winning Oscars. It was a lovely moment where everyone mingled in a very relaxed way knowing that their privacy was protected.
24
In 2023, The Dorchester unveiled an extensive refurbishment and was voted London’s best hotel in the Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards. What changes were made to improve the hotel? The newly renovated rooms and suites feature state-of-the-art updates that enhance both comfort and functionality. Among these updates are improvements to the sound proofing, air conditioning, and plumbing systems throughout the hotel. With the addition of new sound-absorbing materials, guests can enjoy a peaceful and tranquil stay without any disturbance from outside noise. The upgraded air conditioning system provides guests with customisable temperature control, ensuring optimal comfort. The modernised plumbing system not only improves functionality but also promotes sustainability, with water-saving technologies and eco-friendly features incorporated into the design. We also revealed a new ground floor inclusive of the forecourt, garden, lobby, The Promenade, Vesper Bar designed by the legendary Martin Brudnizki, and the Artists’ Bar in January of 2023. The new Cake & Flowers boutique, also designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon, followed in March 2023, and The Dorchester Spa in April 2023. The Dorchester’s penthouse suites will be relaunched following renovation, along with a permanent offering on the rooftop later this year.

The hotel celebrated the coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 by inviting leading British stage set designer Oliver Messel to decorate the hotel façade and did the same to celebrate King Charles III’s coronation. Was it important for the hotel to celebrate the coronation and what reaction did you get from visitors and the family? Yes, it was very important for us to celebrate the coronation given the hotel’s rich history with the royal family. King Charles made his first public appearance at The Dorchester in 1970 and has since attended many times for charitable dinners and state banquets. The King’s parents were also very familiar to the hotel, his father HRH Prince Philip held his bachelor party at The Dorchester on the eve of his wedding and HM The Queen visited throughout her reign. The Dorchester has now celebrated three royal coronations, the first in 1937 for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, where special stands were built on the hotel’s rooftops for spectators to view the procession. Our guests were thrilled with the celebration of the coronation as it gave them the chance to enjoy not only our façade but also the ‘Sovereign Martini’ inspired by The King’s favourite tipple, an open-air lunch to watch the Red Arrows Flypast on our rooftop, floral arrangements and more. It was such a great time to welcome our guests as they could also experience some of the newly renovated parts of the hotel. Boasting three Michelin stars, Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester is characterised by its contemporary French haute cuisine and distinctive fresh flavours. What would you recommend from the menu? It is difficult to find only one dish that is my favourite at Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester as Jean Philippe
Blondet changes the menu every 45 days. This format keeps the experience exciting and encourages our regulars to keep returning to sample new dishes. Jean-Philippe celebrates the technical brilliance of French cuisine in a collection of characterful dishes. Inspired by the changing seasons and the fresh provenance of his ingredients. I do not have a particularly sweet tooth when it comes to desserts but every time I dine at ADAD, I have to have the Rum Baba. It is without a doubt, the best Rum Baba in the world. If you come to dine here, you cannot miss it. Hidden in the heart of your kitchens is the Wine Vault, holding over 1000 bottles. Could you tell us about the Wine Vault and the wine tasting evenings you host? The Wine Vault is a modern and intimate space for a wine tasting for up to 12 guests, the Wine Vault experience is led by our head of wines Jason McAuliffe, who weaves insightful storytelling into each individual journey through some of our most exceptional wines. The Wine Vault is submerged within our kitchens and adjoins the Chef’s Table where our executive chef creates fully bespoke dining experiences for guests. Almost 1,000 bottles make up the carefully curated collection of wines that line the walls of the Wine Vault. In the centre of the room is a bespoke handcrafted walnut wine tasting table, above which a dramatic light feature emits the optimal light setting required for studying the colour of a wine. The wine tasting events we host include private wine tastings and masterclasses, wine tasting and food pairing masterclasses and wine dinners from producers across the world. dorchestercollection.com 25

A Pop of Colour The season of colour is the ideal time to showcase your gemstone collection. Fortunately, there are a number of exciting new additions emerging for 2024, including the luxury ‘Sole’ collection from Wirral-based jewellery designer Nicky Owens, who presents this 18ct yellow gold ring set with pink sapphires, green tourmalines and diamonds. Annoushka also introduces a suite of stylish rings for Summer, within their ‘Whoopsie Daisy’ collection featuring precious diamonds and sapphires nestled amidst undulating waves of gold, along with simple polished gold options.

Making a Statement In recent years, inspiring earring designs have become an easy way to inject personality into your style and some of the latest additions for this Summer will allow you to do just that. One of my favourites are the Ocean Shell Earrings from Edge of Ember, cleverly combining the shell motif with a pearl, a product of the waters. Mejuri have sought to go further with the bold hoops trend, introducing their ‘Stevie’ hoop in 18ct yellow gold with a detachable red enamel link that can be seamlessly interchanged with other colours from the brand’s collection.

ASK THE EXPERT VENARD FONG FROM THE VENARD CLINIC ON HOW HE HELPED OLYMPIAN AND COMMONWEALTH GAMES GOLD MEDALLIST CHRIS COOK
M
any people are affected by chronic pain, many of them have had promises broken and each time get increasingly jaded and sceptical. More amplified when someone comes along and says they can be better in just a few hours/days. His goal was in less than 48 hours. Busy parent, entrepreneur and also double Commonwealth gold medallist and former Olympian, swimmer Chris Cook was frustrated at the impact his chronic back pain was having on his personal and work life over the past 3 to 4 years. He thought this was down to the intense training regime when he was competing. Despite retiring from competition and training dialled down, the pain was still there. He knew this was not a training related problem. This impacted his mood, daily life with his family as well as the brain fog and focus he required for work. Chris travelled from the North East for a two day fast track clinic. These are clinics where we work with the client exclusively for a short and intense duration to solve their issue. Ideal for those on a time deadline or travelling long distances. We mapped out his history in detail covering all injuries and possible causes. Assessments looked at both ends of the spectrum: • Full body stability, balance and ranges of movement. • Individual movement and function of his back-joints and muscles. Even with extensive treatment previously with local clinics to Olympic therapists, the issue persisted. There was one particular strategy as a possible cause came to mind…compensation. Findings showed his back to be tight, weak, and compressed with limited range of movement. He saw the weakness in balance and stability in real time via
the software used to track this. His back had compressed to create stability as a compensation. As the joints now have stability, the muscles do not need to work to stabilise and weaken over time. To affect such a key structure for this length of time, likely cause would be a high priority area that can influence large systems and groups of muscles. The primary cause was his eyes- a reduced ability of coordination between how both eyes moved and worked together as a unit. By improving this ability with specific eye exercises and bringing it back to within normal limits again, this not only restored the strength of the weak muscles and the tightness cleared up. The mobility of his spine returned to normal and pain was eliminated. The body and spine follow where the head moves. The head follows where the eyes move. As a former athlete, Chris loves his numbers. His whole career and swim times were based on data. We retested the full body stability and balance afterwards and both these aspects had doubled. With Chris still enjoying the gym and active lifestyle, we even put the work through a workout. Movements he would previously avoid were effortless. He now has confidence in his body and to this day has remained pain free. Also available from Randox Health are health packages including genetic screening which can be used to evaluate your risk of a range of conditions. By looking at your DNA, we can determine variants, or mutations in your genetic code which may increase your risk of developing a condition. With the Randox Health Nutrition & Lifestyle DNA test, 40 genes from a simple blood sample are screened to reveal how your
body responds to the foods you eat and how your genes can affect your weight, physical activity, injury risk, mental health, and sleep. It will also reveal if you are at higher risk of certain nutritional diseases, empowering you with the knowledge to personalise your nutrition and exercise based on your DNA! Difficulty losing weight, low energy levels, food intolerances and other health problems could be addressed by understanding your genetic makeup and the impact of your diet and lifestyle. By unlocking your genetic blueprint, you are empowered with the tools and knowledge to make healthier lifestyle choices suited to your body. Results from Randox Health checks provide quantitative, scientific data when reporting on the markets used which provides a detailed representation of your health in that area. In an easy-to-interpret test report you will be provided with a breakdown of your results, what they mean and next potential steps. randoxhealth.com 43

s women, we traverse a multitude of stages throughout our lives, each marked by its own set of joys, challenges, and changes…Yet, perhaps none is as profound (or used to be so taboo) or transformative and confusing as the menopause. It’s a time of transition that can bring about a cascade of physical, emotional, and hormonal shifts, often leaving us searching for answers and solutions to try and navigate this uncharted territory with some kind of grace (like a swan madly peddling underneath the surface) and confidence. The experts at Enigma Healthcare recently held a Women’s Health and Wellness event focused on demystifying the menopause and all those questions surrounding the role of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), natural remedies, and holistic lifestyle approaches to managing its myriad symptoms. Did you know that there are over 42 recognised symptoms?
Here are the top 4 takeaways from the event: #1 - As soon as you start to recognise any of the symptoms associated with perimenopause or menopause, talk to an expert, so that you can truly understand what is happening in your body, what might be causing them and the options that are available to help you. #2 -As a gender, women are very good at taking care of everyone else, however our health and wellbeing tends to be put to the bottom of the list. Sound familiar? So,
44
it’s important to schedule a regular MOT to take stock of your health with a view to protect it for the long term. #3 -Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is not a one-size-fits-all approach. It is not simply about treating those 42 symptoms (and counting) it is about looking at the whole person and treating it as a holistic healthcare plan. #4 -Check your breasts once a month. Get to know your normal so that you can tell if anything is abnormal and keep a record. Navigating the menopause is not merely a journey of physical changes, but a holistic exploration of self-care, empowerment and knowing where to go and what to look out for. Through informed choices, proactive healthcare, and a supportive community you can embrace this transition with confidence, vitality, and a renewed sense of well-being. enigmahealthcare.co.uk

#6 - Rib Cage: Keep your rib cage down.
hip-width apart, ensuring your second toe, knee, and hip form a straight line. #2 - Weight Distribution: Balance your weight evenly through the bottom of your feet. Imagine a triangle under your feet, with two points under the balls of your feet and the third point under your heel. Distribute weight evenly on these points, both front-toback and left-to-right. #3 - Lower Back: Maintain a slight curve in your lower back with your hip bones level, giving a bit of length to your lower back. #4 - Legs: Keep your legs straight. #5 - Shoulders: Align your shoulders over your hips.

Best for... Seasonal tasting menus
W
e were invited to try the seasonal tasting menu at the recently opened Aven Restaurant in Preston. There wasn’t a single dish that underwhelmed. I oooh’d and mmm’d at each course, with a high count of ‘that’s amazing!’ thrown in. The consommé and the tomato tart to begin our menu may have been small, but the flavours were mighty. ‘Humble ingredients elevated’, was a phrase that was frequently uttered. For the next two courses, we were encouraged to eat with our fingers (warm towels to help the clean up were provided, a lovely touch). Crumpet with mushroom parfait followed by hash browns and a smoked beef tartare. Both dishes were rich in umami and luscious. The beef and hash browns having all the flavours of a steak dinner with the best chips. We then had bread which had been made using spent grains that had previously been used in beer production (nothing wasted here) served with a cultured butter and smoked maldon sea salt. I tell you, it was stunning. If they take such care and attention with the bread and butter, you just know the skill and love that has gone into each and every other dish. The Jersey royal, smoked eel and chicken dish may sound plain, but every spoonful revealed a myriad of different textures and comforting flavours. This was served with a
Georgian orange wine, a first for me. The pairing changed the wine from having sherry like qualities when tasted alone, to coming alive with freshness when tasted with the food. The monkfish tail and cheek were two standouts, both cooked in different ways. The roasted tail was a soft as butter and the buttermilk fried cheek was very much like a fancy version of a certain fried poultry establishment, only a lot more elegant and delicious. Served with a Viognier and Marsanne blend from Victoria, Australia. A beautiful pairing once again balancing the richness of the dish with bright acidity. Next came the lamb, always a winner, but my favourite part was the slow cooked lamb belly, an underused cut treated with such respect to bring out the rich flavour. I would have channelled my inner Oliver and asked ‘Please sir, can I have some more’, but I needed to save room for the dessert courses. Both of which were, not only works of art, but refreshing and decadent at the same time. A special mention
is needed for the ‘apple crackling’, the peel of the apple dried and caramelised to just the right side of bitterness, all washed down with a late harvest Sauvignon Blanc from Casablanca Valley in Chile, ‘Here’s looking at you, kid!’ We opted to include the cheese course which was a pillow-soft, sheep’s milk cheese from Cartmel, served with sourdough crackers, brioche, truffle honey and caramelised onion chutney. One word, delightful. You would think I’d be stuffed, but I’m no quitter, so our final treats were chicory and caramelised white chocolate fudge and a black trompette madeleine. Mushroom on cake? Don’t knock it til you’ve tried it. Every course was wonderful, and carefully prepared and presented yet with the warmest and friendliest of greetings and surroundings. Dinner is served Wednesday to Saturday and lunch from Thursday to Saturday (with a slightly shorter tasting menu). This place is worth the trip, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed, or leave hungry. avenrestaurant.com 59

uernsey is a stunning island located in the English Channel, just off the coast of Normandy, France. Its geographic location has breathtaking views of the surrounding ocean and countryside. Guernsey feels quintessentially British, probably because I flew from Liverpool and landed in 90 minutes and with its cobbled streets and familiar green landscape it seemed very much home from home. However, it’s undoubtedly French (with other European influence); the most obvious clues are the towns and street names. The island itself is characterised by its picturesque landscapes, with rolling hills, rugged cliffs, and sandy beaches. The coastline is dotted with charming fishing villages, historic castles, and coastal paths perfect for exploring.
What To Do
We had a wonderful tour guide called Gill Girard (details below), who I highly recommend as we got to hear local in-depth knowledge about things that I’d later go back to for a second more thorough visit. The main attractions highlighted on my visit were:
Castle Cornet in St. Peter Port Harbour Explore this historic castle located on a tidal island, where you can learn about Guernsey's military history, visit the museum, and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding area, they even have a festival and live music at the castle throughout the summer season.
Guernsey's Natural Beauty Best for hikers you can hike along the South Coast Cliff Paths - the scenic cliff paths on the island's south coast. Enjoy breathtaking views of the sea, explore hidden coves and spot wildlife along the way.

The farms serve as immersive showcases of local biodiversity with head gardeners leading tours for guests to learn about the ecosystem and native plants. Cookery classes for children or adults can also be organised, incorporating this fresh produce into mouthwatering, Maldivian delights. #10 - The Residence Maldives has introduced a series of sustainability projects as further steps towards being more eco-friendly. The resort has installed solar panels to produce its own electricity and to reduce its diesel consumption; introduced a rainwater harvesting system; removed plastic water bottles and replaced them with glass with the introduction of the water recycling plant; recycled food waste into compost for the Earth Basketkitchen garden and started producing their own herbs, fruits and vegetables which the chefs incorporate into restaurant meals.
My Experience
The Residence Maldives is one of the most charming resorts we have visited; a romantic, adult-only oasis with sweeping views across the ocean; exactly what you dream the Maldives to be. We arrived after a short flight from Male airport and a 10 minute transfer by road to the resort, we were greeted with a traditional Sangu Shell welcome. A gorgeous one bedroom Deluxe Water Pool Villa was waiting for us, which offered the benefit of direct access to the sea (and glorious ocean views) as well as our own private pool. So heavenly was the villa that we didn’t want to leave, so appreciated the option of room service. When we did fancy exploring, the islands offered us plenty of opportunities. A highlight was cycling across the longest bridge in the Maldives from The Residence Falhumaafushi to its sister property The Residence Dhigurah, taking in all the stunning scenery. No holiday is complete without enjoying some delicious cuisine or an ice-cold cocktail in the sunshine – and there are so many places you can do this at The Residence Maldives. This place is paradise; the perfect destination to kick back, unwind and immerse yourself in complete comfort. We would return in a heartbeat! cenizaro.com 71

The 1 Series was the car that turned modern BMWs
from premium luxuries to attainable and desirable products, but it did so without taking away anything that made larger BMW vehicles so appealing. And now there’s a new one, that looks to build on the solid foundations laid by its predecessor with a new design, fresh technology and improved road manners. With a new generation of more efficient engines and a price tag that still scrapes beneath the £30,000 mark, it looks set to be every bit as popular as its forebears. BMW 1 Series, bmw.co.uk

Keeping you up to date with all the latest motoring and technology news WORDS: JAMES FOSSDYKE
Ever-imaginative Ferrari was clearly stuck for ideas when it came to the new V12’s name, but the styling department has smashed it out of the park.
J
ust when you thought big V12 engines were being battered into submission by emissions legislation and environmentalism, Ferrari pops up to show us big can still be best. The engine in question has been shoehorned into a new model – inventively known as the 12Cilindri – designed to set “new standards of performance, comfort and design.” And the design is certainly spectacular, with a choice of coupe and convertible body shapes available, and both offering plenty of visual impact. The sharp nose is reminiscent of the classic Daytona, but the designers have attempted to ensure the car remains thoroughly modern, with clean panels and an air of minimalism. The engine, however, is anything but minimalist. The 6.5-litre V12 goes without a turbocharger or a supercharger, yet it still produces 818bhp, all of which
goes to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox with two clutches, helping it to change gear faster. With that much power in a car weighing just over 1.5 tonnes, it’s no surprise that 0-62mph takes less than three seconds and the top speed is over 210mph. Yet Ferrari says the 12Cilindri is about more than straight-line speed. This 812 Superfast successor is also designed to be stiffer, lighter and more agile than its predecessor, which should help it in the corners. And, despite the engine, it’s more sustainable, with recycled material used in the suspension to reduce manufacturing emissions by 146kg per car. Let’s not worry too much about the emissions from the exhausts… Ferrari 12Cilindri, £TBC, ferrari.com 74

MAXI MUSCLE We thought the BMW M3 Competition — both in saloon and estate forms — had pretty much hit peak condition. A fabulous engine, staggering driving dynamics and ample interior space made it one of the very best supersaloons on the market. Yet BMW thinks it can go further, and it has sent the M3 to the gym. There, it has received an extra 20bhp, taking the total to 523bhp, and that power now goes to all four wheels as standard. It gets new tech, too, thanks to BMW’s latest touchscreen infotainment technology, and there are some new interior options, including new steering wheel designs. BMW M3, from £82,420, bmw.co.uk
POLISHED DIAMOND The Rolls-Royce Cullinan was controversial when it was introduced, but it has become a mainstay of the Rolls-Royce range. Merging the all-road qualities of an SUV with the luxury of a proper Rolls-Royce, it has become one of the brand’s most popular cars. Nevertheless, Rolls-Royce evidently thinks it’s time for an update, so the company has focussed on tweaking the details, with new materials available inside and new technology, including a new infotainment system. Minor changes have been made outside, too, where the Cullinan is offered with an illuminated grille and larger 23-inch alloy wheels have been made available. Alfa Romeo has made some spectacular cars over the years, writes James Fossdyke, but the new Giulia Quadrifoglio might just be the most beguiling one yet
F
or hundreds and thousands of years, scientists, philosophers and artists have all tried and failed to explain love. Human emotions are tricky things to quantify and qualify at the best of times, and love is perhaps the least explicable of all. For all the talk of dopamine hits and procreative usefulness, love is still yet to be adequately defined. All of which leads me to write this missive with some trepidation. After all, how am I supposed to describe my feelings about the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio when so many more qualified and more talented people have been unsuccessful? All I can really say is that I love it. And not in a ‘God-loves-a-tryer’ kind of way. I adore it with all my heart and I miss it now it’s gone. It has left an indelible mark on me. Strangely, none of this has anything to do with facts and figures, impressive though they may be. Nor does it have anything to do with the admiration I had for this car’s predecessor, plentiful though it was. That’s partly because it’s flawed in many ways. The front doors, for example, are quite short, and that meant squeezing my larger-than-average frame into the driving seat was a bit like feeding a giraffe through your wedding ring. And once I’d contorted myself into the cockpit it was very dark indeed. Everything is black, from the upholstery to the dashboard and from the carpets to the roof lining, and a few flecks of sporty red dotted around can’t prevent it from feeling claustrophobic. Nor is the cabin especially upmarket. Sure, the design is smart enough and the carbon-fibre trim
76
that decorates it is quite cool, but the materials are no more impressive than those in a mid-range BMW and the technology is a bit naff by modern standards. Sure, Alfa has improved things on that front since the car was first launched, but the touchscreen still feels like a Nintendo 64 in a world of PlayStation 5s. It’s true that the digital instrument cluster is a highlight, and it’s quite useful in a minimalist, unremarkable sort of way, but the area around the steering wheel is chaos. Huge paddles are there to change gear manually, if you wish to do so, but they conflict with the stalks you use for light and indicator control, so it’s easy to change down a gear instead of simply dipping the headlights. But while all that stuff makes the writers at WhatCar? and co., who seem to have created a language all of their own, whinge and moan about “perceived quality”, “interfaces” and things that “fall easily to hand,” I simply don’t care one bit. Because all the Giulia’s shortfalls simply melt into the Italian sunset when you press the big red button on the steering wheel and wake the beast. Under the curvy bonnet is a 2.9-litre V6 petrol engine, which has seemingly been turbocharged to within an inch of explosion. When the Quadrifoglio was launched, a lot of noise was made about this being a Ferrari-derived motor — essentially a Ferrari V8 with two cylinders chopped off — but that seems to have gone quiet of late. Perhaps it’s because Ferrari and Alfa Romeo are no longer owned by the same people. Whatever the engine’s provenance, it’s absolutely epic. For a kick-off, it produces 513bhp, which is directed to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. That means acceleration is startling, taking the Alfa from 0-62mph so quickly that the numbers on the speedometer just become a blur. You can try and time it from 0-60mph if you want, but good luck operating a stopwatch while you do it. We’d suggest simply trusting the manufacturer’s figure of three-and-a-bit seconds. It certainly feels that fast. And it sounds good while doing it, because that V6 engine has quite the vocal range. At idle it’s quietly menacing, but in one of the sportier driving modes and with ambitious application

of the throttle, it starts to snarl and eventually scream. While it doesn’t quite sound as visceral as the old Quadrifoglio models, it’s still pretty spectacular when it wants to be. And the newfound refinement means it won’t make your ears bleed when you’re on the school run. Of course, economy is pitiful in the real world — you might see the right side of 30mpg once or twice, but it won’t be a regular thing — and let’s gloss over the emissions. Yet it’s still a wondrous thing, and that’s mainly because of the way it drives. Let’s start with the steering, which is one of the more important functions, and it’s sublime. The weight of the wheel, the way it feels through your fingertips and the response it elicits from the nose of the car are all perfect in every way, and it makes the Giulia a delight to steer even around town. Get it on a more open road and you’ll find even greater delight in the suspension, which manages to control the car’s body beautifully without completely spoiling
78
the ride. Admittedly, it will thump into the odd pothole — you can thank the wheels for that — but it’s incredibly comfortable for something with this much power. Combine all that with stunning brakes, and a beautiful sense of poise and balance, and you’ve got something more intoxicating than a pub lock-in and more desirable than David Gandy’s abdomen. It’s a spectacular road car, and it works on a race track, too. Despite all this, though, living with the Alfa is still surprisingly easy. There’s a sensibly sized boot for carrying whatever it is you want to transport, and the rear seats are capacious enough for human beings. Really tall adults might not like it very much, but most will be perfectly happy back there. All of which means that despite the Giulia Quadrifoglio’s flaws, it’s still one of my all-time favourite sports saloons. No, scratch that. It’s my favourite. I know the touchscreen would drive me mad. I know I find getting in and out quite tricky, and that’s going to damage my back. But I just don’t care. I love it. And who can explain love?

n recent years, our outdoor spaces have become an extension of our living areas, evolving from simple gardens or patios into versatile, stylish, and functional areas perfect for entertaining. Whether it’s a sunny summer barbecue or a cosy autumn evening with friends, creating an adaptable outdoor environment is both a practical and rewarding endeavour, especially with the Great British weather!
Create Shade and Shelter A critical element of an all-weather entertaining area is providing adequate shade and shelter. Pergolas, retractable awnings, and large umbrellas can protect guests from the harsh summer sun. The Glow Parasol features a 360 degree rotation capacity and a handy crank and tilt mechanism so you can easily adjust the parasol to provide shade throughout the day. An added feature is the rechargeable, battery-operated atmospheric glow lights built into the ribs of the parasol.

Investing in quality, weather-resistant furniture is the cornerstone of a multifunctional outdoor space. Materials like teak, aluminium, and resin wicker are not only durable but also require minimal maintenance. Opt for cushions and fabrics designed to withstand the elements; look for those labelled as UV-resistant, water-repellent, and mildew-resistant. These choices ensure your seating remains comfortable and attractive, no matter the weather. The HU365 outdoor fabric furniture is designed for year-round outdoor use and is built to endure and stand the test of time. Its distinctive features guarantee prolonged usability in all weather conditions.
Homes and Interiors Heating and Lighting To extend the usability of your outdoor space into the cooler months and evenings, consider incorporating a firepit either as freestanding, tabletop, or built-in. These not only provide warmth but also serve as focal points around which guests can gather. The Mirfield is a great addition to any garden. The stools are upholstered in a water and stain, fade, UV and mould resistant fabric with a quick-dry seat interior. The bar table is made from aluminium frames that are rust resistant – ready to use within an hour of good weather after a downpour! Lighting is equally important, it enhances the ambiance and ensures safety after dark. String lights, lanterns, and LED lights create a warm, inviting atmosphere, while solarpowered options offer energy efficiency. For a touch of elegance, consider installing dimmable lights or smart lighting systems that you can control via your smartphone.

Flexible Decor
Cosipillow’s from £89.99
Finally, adopt a flexible approach to decor. Use outdoor rugs, throws, pillows and blankets that can easily be swapped out or stored when not in use. Choose decor items that complement the natural surroundings and enhance the overall aesthetic of the space. The new Cosipillow features three adjustable infrared heat settings (35 / 45 & 50 degree C) to chase away chills in comfort.
Entertainment Essentials
Protect and Prolong
Outdoor tableware encompasses a variety of durable, practical, and stylish items designed to enhance the al fresco dining experience. Crafted from materials such as melamine, stainless steel, and silicone; these pieces are built to withstand the rigours of outdoor environments, including picnics, camping trips, and backyard gatherings. Key components include unbreakable plates, bowls, and cups, along with reusable utensils and sturdy serving dishes that resist chipping and breaking. Often featuring vibrant colours and modern designs, outdoor tableware combines functionality with aesthetic appeal, ensuring meals enjoyed under the open sky are both convenient and delightful.
Storing your garden furniture is best done with an Aerocover; breathable covers that are water resistant, reduce condensation and help prevent mould and mildew from building up. Lightweight and strong with stoppers at the sides, they are easy to cover, tighten and protect with a handy storage bag for when your furniture is in use. There’s an Aerocover to suit any furniture or parasol. Transforming your outdoor area into an all-weather entertaining space requires thoughtful planning and a blend of practicality and style. By focusing on durable furniture, effective shelter, heating, lighting, functional landscaping, and entertainment essentials, you can create a versatile and inviting environment. Such a space will not only withstand the elements but also provide a welcoming haven for friends and family; come rain or shine. With these elements in place, your outdoor area will become the go-to spot for gatherings throughout the year, seamlessly blending the comforts of indoors, with the beauty and freshness of the outdoors, for you to enjoy through the Summer months and beyond. Guncast provides a run through of some of the most popular requests they’ve seen so far this year.

OUTDOOR HEATED POOLS
Outdoor heated pools are becoming increasingly popular as homeowners seek to extend their swimming season and enjoy their pools year-round – the summer of 2024 is likely to incite even more commissions in the coming months! Innovations in heating technology, such as energy-efficient heat pumps and solar heating systems, make it easier and more cost-effective to maintain comfortable water temperatures even in cooler climates. INFINITY POOLS
Infinity pools, also known as vanishing edge or negative edge pools, continue to be a popular choice in 2024. These pools create a visual effect where the water appears to extend infinitely to the horizon, providing a stunning aesthetic that blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. Advances in materials and construction techniques are making infinity pools more accessible and customisable, allowing for creative designs that enhance the visual impact and overall ambiance. The Guncast Pools and Wellness team recently designed and constructed a distinctive, boutique-hotel-inspired swimming pool for a private property. Clear glass was used to create an infinity edge and the fantastic teal glass pool tiles give it a striking finish. The swimming pool’s modern shape and design complements the gorgeous garden landscaping and fits well within the space, making use of the natural levels of the garden. The client wanted a functional pool and separate vitality pool, that could be enjoyed all year round. This swimming pool provides a space for relaxing, exercising and socialising. The infinity edge pool also acts as an impressive water feature, visible from the house at all times.

DEVELOPING A WELLNESS SUITE
POOLS IN LISTED BUILDINGS
Integrating pools into or around listed buildings presents unique challenges and opportunities. Listed buildings, protected for their historical and architectural significance, require careful planning and execution to ensure that any modifications are sympathetic to the original structure. In 2024, there is a growing trend of incorporating pools in a way that respects the heritage of these properties while adding modern luxury. This might involve restoring and repurposing existing water features, such as old fountains or ponds, into functional swimming pools. Alternatively, new pools are designed to be minimally invasive, using materials and construction techniques that blend seamlessly with the historic architecture. These projects often require close collaboration
Why stop at just a pool? With the world of wellness continuing to expand, more and more clients are looking to expand their leisure facilities to include a worldclass sauna, steam room and ice cabins, befitting a 5* hotel. As part of the KLAFS Group, Guncast have exclusive access to the beautiful range of award-winning products to enhance pool and relaxation areas. Q&A
with
CHRISTINE STABLES, WINNER OF THE NEW LIGHT PURCHASE PRIZE
Christine lives in Stockport in Cheshire and after working as a textile artist for many years, became an abstract painter in 2019 so that she could mix and use her own colours to suit her work. She uses acrylic paint, glazes and inks, and in her winning piece ‘The Art of Balance’ she uses organic shapes, created with loose white lines, showing off the colour orange by using contrasts in textures, translucency, opacity and complimentary colour. The New Light Prize Exhibition, established in 2010, has become one of the UK’s largest and most talked about open touring exhibitions and offers some of the region’s best awards and opportunities for aspiring and established artists. Tell us a bit more about you... After retiring as a hospital laboratory technician, I immersed myself in creative crafts but never really felt a fulfilling sense of achievement. So I learned to analyse the essence of what I was really interested in; what kind of art work really excited me. It was basically colour, loose pattern and a huge desire not to have be neat any more! Painting was the answer, so I could mix my own favourite colours and indulge in texture and pattern. I turned towards mixed media abstract art where I could be me - unfettered and free while incorporating these ideas. In 2020, I started to study abstract art technique and design online, completing some very in depth courses. Since then I have continued my art studies and have been exhibiting and selling my work, mainly through galleries and Instagram. In my work I try to achieve a sense of depth and balance. It is inspired by the many different photographs I take - of buildings, worn surfaces, repeat patterns made by architectural features and natural forms, tangled branches etc. I love to loosely recreate the essence of these images using paint, collage, pastels and inks. What I have learned most is that for me, creating an abstract painting is a way of immersing myself in my own joyful world of shape, colour, line etc to make something that is so rewarding for me and I have found that my work appeals to others too, which is gratifying.
Early in 2024 I won the New Light Art Purchase Prize for my painting, ’The Art of Balance’. The New Light Exhibition started at the Williamson Art Gallery at Birkenhead and is travelling in the north of England until Christmas 2024. When I visited the exhibition, I was delighted to find my piece was featured in the exhibition signage. Who are your greatest influences? In abstract art - Jane Davies, Nicholas Wilton and Karen Stamper, my wonderful online art teachers. In life - my twin daughters! What have been some of your best experiences? I have owned and managed some woodland for many years. This has been an amazing experience - learning to work with nature and being continually in awe of its beauty and majesty. Traditional vs contemporary style? Contemporary. What would you consider your greatest achievement? Bringing up my identical twins to be amazing people. What would your super power be? To fly!
