Hill & Hill The Jewellers
J
ewellery is such an important part of every wedding, from the sparkling diamond engagement rings, to wedding bands on the big day. The team of jewellery stylists at Hill & Hill The Jewellers, in Altrincham, have brought together what they consider to be some of the finest bridal jewellery available. The team is lead by business owner and jewellery designer Jo Hill. “We have had so many loved-up couples come to us full of nerves and excitement, who have chosen absolutely beautiful wedding jewellery from us. From engagement rings, to wedding rings and jewellery for their big day. The fact customers always come back to us is so lovely,” says Jo. “We love being personal jewellers to couples, as it adds something really special to the whole wedding journey.” Hill & Hill The Jewellers’ reviews say it all. One recently engaged couple, Christopher and Annie, raved about their first class service. Christopher wrote: “Jo and her team made getting down on one knee one of the most special moments of my life. They were so helpful, went above and beyond, and have been there every step of the way to make it extra magical. I couldn’t be more glad I made the choice to go with them.”
Hill & HIll The Jeweller’s collection of engagement rings include traditional mined diamonds, as well as increasingly popular “lab grown” diamonds. “A lot of couples love the option of lab diamonds.
The diamonds are of the highest clarity and colour, and only the trained eye could tell them apart from a mined diamond. You can also have a much larger stone for the price, by comparison,” says Jo. “And there are many couples who cannot escape the romance and allure of the traditional mined diamond. It’s all about personal choice. The important thing is, come and see us, and we can walk you through the options.
“I went with my dream wedding band in mind and they made it happen! The team were amazing from start to finish, involving me in every step of the design phase (which was very exciting!), and I now have a beautiful bespoke ring that I am so excited to wear. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a special piece of jewellery to treasure forever.” With wedding season nearly upon us, Hill & Hill The Jewellers are all geared up to help you make the perfect choice. “Don’t forget the bridal party all need jewellery too,” says Jo. “The bride, the bridesmaids, the best man and groom and the mother of the bride! We have something for everyone. Let the wedding season begin!”
Christopher and Annie That may include having a ring specially designed and made by us. We will make sure, whichever beautiful engagement ring you choose, it will guarantee to melt the heart and seal the deal.” Bethy is Hill & Hill The Jewellers’ store manager, and loves weddings. When it comes to the big day there’s so much to think about, and Bethy believes the jewellery is the most important part. “There’s so much to plan and pay for the big day, but your wedding rings last forever, so need careful consideration. So before you blow your budget on cars, fowers, and favours, come and choose your wedding rings first. It’s so exciting!” One recent newly wed, Emily, left a great review after having her wedding bands designed by Hill & Hill The Jewellers.

My life ... KATE PARK, OWNER OF KATE PARK EVENTS LTD How would you describe yourself ? In 3 words I’d say honest, hardworking and creative. Where is work? Everywhere and anywhere! The office is in Sale but we meet clients wherever suits them and the purpose of the meeting best. What did you want to be when you were younger? I wanted to be an actress – either on the stage or on screen as I loved singing, dancing and acting. I studied at Arden College and the Manchester School of Acting to pursue that dream and ended up working in events where I always say each event is like putting on a show! Is there one aspect of your life that your 18 year-old self would be shocked at? That I bought my family home from my parents. If you told me at 18 that one day I would be buying it off my parents and moving in with my own family I would have never believed you.
What or who inspires you and why? Selfless people. I am amazed by doctors and nurses, they work so hard and quite literally save lives every day. We did a conference for radiologists earlier in the year and I was in awe of their ability to look at these scans and give incredibly detailed diagnosis.
Name a few of your favourite places to be... I love to go somewhere different on holiday every year, this year I’ve been to New York and Crete with the family, and have an ever growing list of countries I’d love to visit – the world is a big place! I also love going out for good food, some of my favourite restaurants being Peter Street Kitchen restaurant in Manchester and Simon Rimmer’s Greens restaurant in Sale.
What’s the one thing that propelled you? Having children gave me an entirely new perspective on life and I felt invincible. I set up Kate Park Events when my eldest son was 2 ½ and my youngest was 10 months old. It wasn’t a planned decision, I just found myself in a situation where I either took the leap or settled for a part time job, possibly in an industry I didn’t love. What was the last gift you gave someone? A client of ours found out she was pregnant whilst we were planning the wedding (I was one of the first people she told!) so when she had the baby I sent a personalised box with the baby’s name and filled it with clothes and toys for the baby, big brother books for their older son and goodies for Mum. Tell us a secret/fun fact. I auditioned for Pop Idol (the original X Factor) where they found the members of the band Hear’Say. Who or what would you place in room 101? Liars, I can’t abide them!

What’s the one song you have on heavy rotation? My guilty pleasure is musicals! I don’t have a particular song on rotation but I have a musicals playlist which is on a constant shuffle. You’ll see me belting out songs if you drive past me on my way to and from meetings. Congratulations on recently celebrating 10 years in business, how did you celebrate? On the day of the anniversary I took the team to Fenix restaurant in Manchester and then hosted an International Women’s Day celebration at Peter Street Kitchen in March to thank past and present clients for their support throughout the 10 years. How has the industry changed over the last decade? Social media has made a massive impact and changed the events industry forever. Whereas we used to rely on word of mouth or venues recommendations, now the majority of our work stems from images and videos of our events being seen and shared on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. Could you share a recent wedding experience you’ve worked on? We worked with a couple who got married at the beginning of June at Grantley Hall who knew what they wanted for their big day but gave us the creative freedom to bring their vision to life. The couple were an integral part of the planning process to ensure their day was unique and personal to them but they trusted us explicitly throughout which allowed us to make decisions on their behalf and therefore execute (in their words) ‘the best day ever!’
They really used our service the way I envisaged it to be used, which made it both successful and enjoyable for all parties – It was a pleasure to work with them and plan their wedding. What is your favourite wedding trend for 2024 and what do you think will be popular in 2025? QR codes for uploading photos, white heart sunglasses to create those viral TikTok videos and bows have all been major trends of 2024 and we are now working on new designs and ideas for our 2025 couples (which if I told you about, they wouldn’t be new for our 2025 events!) But I have to say, although trends are great, what I love is creating a bespoke wedding to suit the couples’ individual tastes making their day unique to them (rather than it just being ‘on-trend’) kateparkevents.co.uk 17

T he Hea earr t
of the Pa P a rty Meet Tania Burton, Owner of Ginger Snap and the key ingredient to your wedding planning and catering experience
Tanis, tell us your story. I started the business back in 2006 when I was only 23 by doing friends’ weddings and events and I quickly started to cater more and more weddings and events all over Scotland. In 2018, my husband joined the team to head up the kitchen and in 2020 we relocated to our current home, a farm in the North West of England so we now can cater from the North of Scotland all the way down to Cheshire. Over the years my little black book has grown and I also offer full wedding planning as well.
How do you use your expertise and imagination to guide nervous, new couples through the process of planning their wedding catering? I always like to speak to my couples before I even send them a quote as I always feel you get to know someone even after one phone call in order to create a bespoke quote for each and every client. This also allows me to share my expertise and knowledge with them to start the trust process, that we know what we are doing and the couple are in very safe hands.
As mentioned, your husband James Burton who was a Masterchef: The Professionals finalist heads up the kitchen. How does James work with
couples to create the perfect menu for their big day? James is so passionate about what he does and he can talk for hours about the food and we find it really inspires our couples. We like to invite our couples along to a Ginger Snap showcase and show them what we are all about and really spoil them for an afternoon with canapes, wine and a lovely lunch. We then follow this up with a video call in the following couple of weeks to discuss in detail what the couple would like to have for their wedding menu and create a bespoke menu for them.
What are current wedding food trends - what’s proving popular? We are finding that plated food is making a comeback and beautifully presented simple and delicious food where the ingredients shine is extremely popular. Another, popular trend is foregoing dessert for a dessert reception where we create bite-sized petit fours and pass them around like canapes at the end of the meal. We have also been doing alcoholic slushies on the bar – very popular this year are Spicy Margs! ginger-snap.co.uk
Where are you based and where do you cover? We are based in the North West of England and cover from the North of Scotland, to the Lake District & Northumberland, Yorkshire and Cheshire.
How many menus can couples choose from? The options are endless.
What are your most popular starters, mains & desserts? This year a cured trout starter, a beef main course and a raspberry mousse for dessert.
How many canapés would you recommend per guest? At least 5 – it is my favourite part of the day.
How many people can you cater for? Up to 500.

Country House: A venue for all seasons
A spectacular wedding venue situated in 15 acres of breathtaking Cheshire countryside
A
wedding venue that has so much to offer, Hilltop Country House is idyllic for all seasons with indoor and outdoor options for all aspects of your special day. Their gardens and grounds are well looked after all year round, so you’re always surrounded by manicured lawns and flowers for all seasons. The Hilltop team pride themselves in the flexibility of their service so that no matter what the weather, they will make your wedding wishes come true!
Spring & Summer… Spring and summer offer the most vibrant of colours as the venue bursts gorgeous flowers and luscious greenery. As we head into spring the drive is lined with daffodils followed by bluebells and if you look into the neighbouring fields, you will see the baby lambs. The top lawn covered in pink petals from the cherry blossom trees and the country house suddenly brims with purple wisteria. Springtime really does bring the excitement that the warmer months are finally here… allowing you to have an outdoor ceremony. Hilltop
offers two outdoor ceremony options. One being on the terrace and the other on the top lawn, both with aisles stretching through the flower bedded gardens and a backdrop of the country house. There is no need for you to dress your outdoor ceremony with all the natural beauty that surrounds Hilltop. Summertime is when the herb garden and orchard really bloom. Hilltop grow their own herbs in their kitchen garden to utilise in your wedding food and drink menus. Their orchard has an abundance of apples, pears and plumbs. Spring and summer allow you to spend your day outdoors, enjoying the views and outstanding gardens... as well as the outdoor bar with pizza oven and BBQ! For your wedding breakfast, their marquee has bifold doors to let in that fresh air. With the light evenings, Hilltop’s boogie room is dark with all the nightclub vibes so that you can dance the night away!
Autumn & Winter… Autumn and winter at Hilltop is truly magical. With the weather still warm in autumn, the greenery around the venue
turns to a burnt orange and fiery red. As the leaves fall off the trees covering the ground, it creates the perfect frame for your wedding photos. During the winter, you’ll notice a little sparkle around Hilltop with the frosty lawns and icy gardens, idyllic for a white wedding. A Mat Matcch Mad adee in Musi Mus ic The Hit List’s Rochelle and Marvin Humes are are back to host three teams battling it out to become the ultimate music masters and take home the grand prize
S
ince 2019, The Hit List has continued to captivate audiences with its blend of nostalgia, competition, and musical excitement. The BBC One show, challenges contestants to name as many hit songs and artists as possible under intense pressure. Presented by fan favourites Rochelle and Marvin Humes, the show features three pairs of contestants who showcase their music knowledge for a chance to win a £10,000 jackpot. How does it feel to be in the seventh series of The Hit List? Rochelle: It’s so weird when you hear that it’s actually seven years, but at the same time, it still feels so fresh, which is a nice place to be in. We say it all the time, but it’s our dream show. It’s
32
the show that we’d be watching if we didn’t host it. So we’re just happy that it’s back! What’s your favourite part about hosting the series together? Marvin: Working with my wife, that’s my favourite part. This is the only thing that we do together professionally, and it’s a very unique thing to do because it doesn’t feel like work. We’re doing a show that we love and we know it inside out. Working with Roch is super easy because I’m working with the person I know the best and vice versa. We’re very, very lucky, and very fortunate - and we are still married after seven years!

The show has both regular episodes and celebrity specials. How do the dynamics differ between these two types of episodes? Rochelle: With the celebrity episodes, the contestants have this confidence that they’re going to perform really well, so sometimes it’s quite amazing to watch how the mighty fall [laughs]. Then in our civilian shows, those contestants are much more tuned into the gameplay. Their knowledge of music is so brilliant, but they’re always a little bit more unassuming. I quite like the difference in the dynamic because it’s the complete opposite. Marvin: The civilian shows record very quickly, because they’re like a human Shazam! Whereas the celebrity ones, although they are a lot of fun, we often run out of songs because the celebrity contestants keep skipping them instead of answering the question. The Hit List has become a staple for Saturday night TV. What do you think makes the show so appealing to viewers? Rochelle:The Hit List has that family value - it’s perfect for parents, for kids, for your granny! It’s a real family viewing experience. That’s always a winner in our home because we always love to have something that our siblings, our friends, our parents, our kids can all sit down and watch together.
Marvin: It’s got that inclusivity built into the rounds - especially the first round where we go from the 2010s back to the 70s. No matter what age you are, you’re going to know at least a couple of the songs. If you could choose any music artist to make a guest appearance on The Hit List, who would it be and why? Marvin: I always say the same person, and that’s Sir Elton John. Obviously he is an absolute music legend, an icon and he’s been making music for decades now! But he’s also so in tune with today’s music. He’s got a radio show on Apple Music and he’s always championing new artists, so he’s really got his finger on the pulse of what’s fresh and what’s trending. I’d love to know if he watches The Hit List! We love having radio DJs as well. They tend to be super competitive because they’re listening to music all day every day. Rochelle:They take it very seriously, especially because in those episodes, they’re playing for money for charity but you can also tell that they’re in it to win for themselves! Marvin: It’s always fun to play with DJ’s too because these are people that know that they should do well, but then they get knocked out in the first round! They are worried that their expertise is going to get challenged. What has been the most surprising or impressive musical knowledge displayed by a contestant? Marvin: This season we have Sally Lindsay and Eddie Kadi as a team. 33
“
Rochelle: We say it all the time, but it’s our dream show. It’s the show that we’d be watching if we didn’t host it
34
”
Rochelle: That was my favourite duo! Marvin: They had different music tastes but they managed to fill in each other’s gaps perfectly! Rochelle: Eddie is a massive afrobeats fan, and he was able to pick an “Afrobeat” game in one of the rounds and managed to knock the other team out, so they played really tactically. Marvin: Those are always the best combinations, when you’ve got two people coming together from two different music backgrounds. That’s why parent and child combinations are always great!
Which is a more intense atmosphere I’m A Celebrity… or The Hit List? Marvin: [laughs] The Hit List is a walk in the park! I actually have a little I’m A Celebrity… reunion with Nick Pickard and Danielle Harold on this season and it was the first time I’d seen them since the jungle, so that was great. When you’ve lived in the jungle with someone you have a really unique connection, so it was really great to get to see them again. Tell us about some of the celebrity specials we can look forward to this season Marvin: We had Jedward on the show and they were absolutely amazing. They were so up for it and had so many amazing stories to share. They were name dropping constantly - everyone from Whitney Houston to Gemma Collins! But then, during the gameplay they were unstoppable, we were so impressed. We also had Layton Williams and Angela Scanlon on another episode… Rochelle: Layton was performing for us and everything! Marvin: He was just amazing. Then we had Rick Edwards and Harry Judd and they were great,

Are you competitive amongst each other with games? Do you ever play The Hit List at home? Rochelle: I’m not very competitive but we do love to play it at home with the kids. We play every Christmas with buzzers and everything, but I’m like, “Marv, you have to host the rounds” because it’s actually so irritating to play with him [laughs]. Marvin: My mates like to challenge me and I play it with them, but yeah, I host the rounds at home.
Paul Sinha and Joe Sugg, who were brilliant. Rochelle: I mean, Paul is the quizmaster, right? Marvin: Of course! He’s a Chaser. But he is equally very good with music knowledge as well. The celeb specials for this season are great. What do you enjoy most about interacting with the contestants? Rochelle: It has to be their love of music. Of course, our roots for both of us are in music. So to be around people that enjoy it as much as we do is a dream. And you can tell when we’re filming that everybody loves it as much as us, so we’re always so happy that they’re as excited to be a part of it as we are.
Are there any shows you would like to compete on as a couple? Rochelle: I’d love to do something like Bake Off! I think that could be quite fun. Marv is not good at baking but I’m pretty good at cooking. Marvin: Yeah, your last Bake Off experience wasn’t that good, was it? Rochelle: I’m going to defend myself here because I took part in a charity special of Bake Off years ago and accidentally doused my dessert in salt instead of sugar because I didn’t read the label correctly. I was so smug too and Mary Berry was still hosting it then so I was really trying to impress her. So yeah, I think I’d do Bake Off again but make sure it was sugar rather than salt this time! Series 7 of The Hit List is available now on BBC iplayer
Do you find it difficult to not shout out the answers? Rochelle: Sometimes it’s tricky, and on the celeb shows because it’s for charity we do have to spoon feed them the answers sometimes [laughs]. But in the civilian episodes when they’re playing for money for themselves, we can’t help them out because it has to be taken really seriously. But we’re always rooting for them!

To do just that, they present clients with a suite of options, including some that veer away from the ‘traditional’. One piece that is sure to serve as a constant reminder of this special moment is the brand’s Five Stone Heart Diamond Ring, in 18ct yellow gold, set with five fancy heart shaped diamonds, sweeping around the finger. For the more understated feel, their Waterfall collection features an 18ct yellow gold wedding band with bezel and claw set diamonds, weighing 0.43cts. ASK THE EXPERT JAMES POWER, TEACHER AT THE MANCHESTER ALEXANDER TRAINING SCHOOL AND AT HIS STUDIO IN KNUTSFORD NEAR TATTON PARK What is the Alexander Technique? The origins of the Alexander Technique date back to the early 20th century and a talented actor called Frederick Matthias Alexander. When on stage, Alexander struggled with vocal problems and could not find a doctor to help him. James takes up the story: “Alexander discovered that it was something he was doing was causing his voice to go when he was performing. He discovered he was stiffening and shortening his body in a way which was causing him this problem when he was speaking. He decided to systematically re-educate himself to find a new way of thinking about the act of speaking, and this solved his problems. So, this really beautiful technique and philosophy came about through that.” While the Alexander Technique has helped people all over the world, it is not always easy to communicate what the Technique is. James describes it as the “user manual for your body and mind”, adding that it’s an effective way to “improve your posture and performance, and a powerful method to restore grace in movement”. Put simply, Alexander Technique teachers gently use their hands to show pupils how to undo unnecessary tension. This helps to reduce problems caused by unhelpful habits.
“The Alexander Technique for me is freedom,” says James. “Freedom from habits and behaviours that cause so much suffering, and freedom to think and move with grace and poise. “On a practical level, you see how effective it is in reducing back pain. The BMJ published the results of a large clinical trial in 2008 that showed that, after one year, people who had Alexander lessons had 86% fewer days of back pain, much less incapacity and a better quality of life compared with those who received the usual GP care. A further large clinical trial at the University of York confirmed the effectiveness for reducing neck pain. “For me, after having a stroke as a child, the Alexander Technique gave me back the ability to run and walk and play sports I love. Every day, I see the impact the Alexander Technique has in helping people to reduce stress and improve their confidence. It’s about the way we use our bodies and minds, how it impacts our performance in every area of our lives.”
Helping others For James, the Alexander Technique has led to what he calls a “radical acceptance” of his condition and who he is as a person. “There's so much body shaming in our culture where people have all of this tension, and it manifests in muscular tension. But your body and mind are completely intertwined. So, I've just been in awe of this technique, and I'm still fascinated by how you can adapt. The technique is profoundly helpful, and it's one of those things that really could make a massive impact if more people were aware of it.” findyourbackbone.com

C la larr e S tob toba a rt My Secret Weapon - Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage Massage
As I prepare for my 10th wedding anniversary party at the end of September, I’ve been on a mission to look and feel my absolute best. This special occasion calls for a fresh approach to my wellness routine and I’ve found the ultimate treatment that’s making all the difference; Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage Massage. After experiencing the results firsthand, I can confidently say it’s a game-changer with immediate results in both appearance and how you feel. What is Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage Massage? This specialised massage technique focuses on stimulating the lymphatic system—a crucial part of our immune system that helps remove toxins and waste from the body. The lymphatic system consists of a network of lymph nodes and vessels that transport lymph fluid. When this system is functioning optimally, it helps reduce fluid retention, flush out toxins and support overall health. The Benefits Here are the benefits that I have personally
noticed and that make this treatment an essential part of my wellness routine: #1 - Reduces Bloating and Puffiness: This massage is incredibly effective at relieving fluid retention. After a session, you’ll notice a significant reduction in swelling, leaving you feeling lighter. #2 - Flushes Toxins Out of Your Body: By stimulating the lymphatic system, this massage helps in flushing out toxins that can accumulate over time. This not only benefits your overall health but also enhances your body’s natural detoxification process. #3 - Improves Skin Complexion: One of the most noticeable benefits for me has been the improvement in my skin. The massage promotes better circulation, leaving the skin clearer, more radiant and with a healthy glow that lasts. #4 - Creates a Sculpted Appearance: Who doesn’t want to look more toned and sculpted? This treatment helps in defining the contours of your body, giving you a more refined and slim appearance. #5 - Enhances Overall Wellbeing: Beyond the physical benefits, I’ve found that my overall wellbeing has improved. Better sleep, higher energy levels and a general sense of balance have all been welcome effects of regular treatments. #6 - Boosts Immune System: Lastly, a well-functioning lymphatic system means a stronger immune system. Regular sessions have left me feeling healthier and more resilient, minimising the risk of falling ill.
My Routine Given its effectiveness, I’ve booked fortnightly appointments leading up to the big day. To ensure I’m in peak condition, I also have sessions booked five days before the party and again on the morning before the celebration. This consistency not only guarantees that I maintain the benefits but also ensures that I’ll be looking and feeling my absolute best as I walk into our anniversary celebration. I’m fortunate to have my treatments with the highly experienced Sasha, whose expertise makes all the difference. You can find her at mysculpt.co.uk if you’re interested in trying this transformative massage for yourself. I highly recommend trying Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage Massage. Whether you’re preparing for a special event or just want to enhance your overall wellbeing, this massage technique is the perfect addition to your self-care routine.

The Moder Modern Surge in Wedding Vo Vow Renewal Renewals W O R D S : A l e x M e l l o r- B ro o k , D a t i n g a n d R e l a t i o n s h i p C o a c h , C o - f o u n d e r a t S e l e c t P e r s o n a l I n t ro d u c t i o n s What is a Vow Renewal? Vow renewals are ancient practices that have seen a significant rise in modern times. A study from 1995 identifies three main reasons for this surge: #1 - Couple Choice: Planned by couples or their families. #2 - Relational Repairs: Reaffirming commitment after a separation or major life event. #3 - Group Renewal: Organised by churches or belief groups for multiple couples at once.
Why Renew Your Vows? There are many personal reasons for renewing vows, some positive, some negative, but always driven by a desire to restate love and commitment: • Landmark Occasions: Significant anniversaries, starting a family or business, major promotions, or relocations are all milestones that might prompt a vow renewal. Beyoncé and Jay-Z took this route with a grand vow renewal on their tenth anniversary after a secret first wedding.
• Problems and Woes: Overcoming challenges like health, financial, or emotional issues can be a compelling reason to celebrate. Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne secretly renewed their vows in 2017 after working through Ozzy having had an affair. It was a statement of confidence in their ability to face anything life throws at them. • Getting What You Want: If the first wedding wasn’t ideal, a vow renewal offers a chance to create a dream celebration. Jamie and Jools Oliver had a simple first wedding in an Essex church but renewed their vows 23 years later on a Maldives beach surrounded by their children. • Pure Romance: For natural romantics, renewing vows is an opportunity to continually restate their love. Ellen DeGeneres experienced this when her wife, Portia de Rossi, surprised her with a vow renewal officiated by Kris Jenner, with notable guests like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Ellen thought she was attending Portia’s birthday party, only to find herself the guest of honour!
as when children leave home or retirement looms.
The Psychology of Vow Renewals
Thinking creatively about your vow renewal ensures a meaningful and joyous reaffirmation of love and commitment. selectservices.co.uk
Recommitting to each other can have profound psychological benefits. It allows couples to involve new significant people, like children, who weren’t part of the original wedding. Renewing vows can also serve as a public celebration of what makes a couple strong, helping to reframe the marriage at different life stages, such
Vow Renewal Tips • Communicate your relationship story: Reflect on what you want to convey about your past, present, and future as a couple. • Involve significant people: Consider who is important in your life and how you want to include them in the celebration including video cameos for far flung loved ones. • Be honest about finances: Financial disagreements can disrupt relationships, so make sure you’ve agreed a spending plan. • Consider inclusivity: Remember those who might feel left out, like widowed or divorced friends or family who were part of the original wedding but can’t be involved this time through health or geography. Utilise technology like live streaming, digital invitations, and virtual guest books to include everyone who matters.

A Decade of Difference Abbey Gate College and the Mlindzini community, Eswatini
S
ince 2013, Abbey Gate College in Cheshire has maintained an on-going partnership with Mlindzini Community in Eswatini (formally known as Swaziland). Visits by groups of students in Years 11-13, plus staff volunteers, have been made on a bi-annual basis to provide them with opportunities to experience a different culture, to undertake construction work to improve facilities and to help improve educational opportunities for the Eswatini pupils. When this collaboration began, it was a bold step. To bridge the vast geographical and socio-economic divide between the two communities was an ambitious undertaking. Yet, a decade on, it is evident that the partnership has not only endured but flourished, becoming a beacon of hope and progress. Over the years, four student expeditions have ventured to Eswatini, the most recent in July 2024. These expeditions provide invaluable experiences for Abbey Gate College students, offering them the opportunity to experience a culture very different from their own while developing their leadership and
teamworking skills. Through these trips, students have not only made a positive impact on the community but have also learned invaluable lessons about global citizenship and social responsibility. Fundraising has been a key component of these expeditions, with the entire Abbey Gate College community participating in events such as race nights, quiz nights, bake sales, and other events. The funds raised have supported various projects in Mlindzini, including road improvements, the construction of a bridge, and the building of new kitchen blocks for the schools. These projects have made a significant difference in the daily lives of students and teachers, improving access to education and ensuring that basic needs, such as meals, are met. However, this partnership is more than just bricks and mortar. It is about people connecting with people. The exchange of cultures, ideas, and perspectives has enriched both communities. Abbey Gate College students have gained a profound appreciation for the challenges faced by their peers in Mlindzini, while the community has embraced new opportunities and aspirations. This decade-long collaboration is a powerful reminder of the interconnectedness of our world. It demonstrates that even the smallest actions can have a ripple effect. By investing in the education and well-being of the Mlindzini community, Abbey Gate College has not only fulfilled its social responsibility but has also created a legacy of hope and inspiration. One of the most significant achievements of this collaboration has been the increase in
school attendance and retention rates in Mlindzini. Previously, many children in the community did not attend school regularly due to a lack of facilities and resources. Now, with the support of Abbey Gate College, not only do more children attend school, but they also stay longer, with a noticeable increase in the number of students progressing to higher education Staff members from the schools in the community have commented on this enduring relationship; “Abbey Gate College has been a true partner in every sense of the word. They have not only provided us with resources but have also stood with us, shared our challenges, and celebrated our successes. We are forever grateful for their friendship and support.” “We run short of words to express our sincere gratitude for the donations. Pass our great thankfulness to…everyone who has played a part.” Craig Jenkinson, Head of Abbey Gate College says of the College’s Eswatini Service Project; ‘The world needs more partnerships like this. It is a beacon of hope in a world often marked by division and inequality, Abbey Gate College and the community of Mlindzini have shown us that together, we can create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.’ abbeygatecollege.co.uk 55

ROMANTIC ESCAPE For couples looking for a Sicilian retreat, Palazzo Previtera, a luxury guesthouse, contemporary art gallery and living museum situated in the quiet town of Linguaglossa has opened a new suite in a restored dovecote and adding an infinity swimming pool. A 10 year restoration, overseen by Alfio Puglisi, a descendent of the family that built the palazzo in 1649, resulted in Palazzo Previtera opening to guests for the first time in 2023. The interiors of the suite honour the Italian art deco era with a 1930s double bed and armchairs, sourced by the family from Milan before WW2. Geometric shapes and bold colours are combined with luxurious materials such as Caracalla and Guatemala marble in the bathroom. Oak parquet floors continue the mid century look in the bedroom, while the bathroom is accessorised with retro tap fittings. A highlight of the new suite is a roof terrace with clear views over to Mount Etna. The new infinity pool, open to all guests, is surrounded by white stone tiles with wooden deck chairs and vibrant persimmonorange coloured ceramic coffee tables. Lined with rainwater blue tiles, the pool is filled with sea salt sourced from the Marsala salt pans in Western Sicily. palazzoprevitera.com

Liz’s Top Tips for Holiday Homeowners Cottages.com’s Liz Minshull offers her advice on how holiday homeowners and buyers can maximise their returns Type of property: Cottages are always a popular choice for holidaymakers but quirkier properties also attract good interest, including converted chapels, stables or barns, and other dwellings such as pods and tree houses. Flexibility: If you’re happy to accept short breaks and offer flexible start days, this will help attract more customers and set you apart from owners who only accept longer stays. In fact, you could see up to 30% more bookings than owners with properties that don’t accept short breaks.
Hot tubs: It’s an investment worth making because properties with hot tubs on average achieve 40% more bookings and 85% more revenue than properties without. Make it pet friendly: We’re a nation of animal lovers, so if you’re interested in maximising bookings consider attracting those who want to go away with their dogs. Pet-friendly properties generate 18% more revenue on average than non-pet-friendly ones.
Essentials: Wi-Fi is expected as standard these days, as are high levels of cleanliness. We recommend that our accommodation providers supply cleaning and sanitisation to very high standards. Luxury sells: The more luxurious you can make your property, the better. Top-notch properties are more likely to sell out and will encourage year-round bookings. Think quality furnishings, coffee makers, hot tubs and wood burners – special touches people may not have at home. This can earn you 10% more bookings and 70% more revenue compared to non-luxury properties.
Word travels fast: Good reviews are really important. Cottages.com uses Feefo, an in-built independent reviewing platform, which allows customers to review a property they’ve stayed in. As you’d expect, properties with good reviews get more repeat bookings. Things such as a nice welcome pack with local produce, and other thoughtful or little touches make a difference here. Land a bargain: Don’t rule out purchasing land without a property. You might encounter a stunning plot located in a beautiful location, and this could be your golden ticket. There’s increasing demand for holidays in shepherd’s huts and pods as people look to get back to nature and explore the great outdoors.
Help the local economy: Tourism can be an important industry for the local community in the area of your property. When visitors stay in your holiday let, they’ll usually spend money visiting local shops, pubs and restaurants. Hiring local people such as cleaners to help maintain your property will also contribute towards the local economy. Not only that, but it also gives you peace of mind knowing that someone is keeping an eye on your property when you are not there. Pick a reputable partner: Teaming up with a reputable letting agency will minimise the pressure on you to find bookings and save you time. Cottages.com can help you manage your bookings and marketing, and advise on the best pricing strategy, while also dealing with customer queries.
If you’ve got a holiday home in Cheshire or the surrounding area and would like to discover what you could earn from it with cottages.com, I’d be happy to visit at a convenient time and discuss it with you over a coffee. My Experience The Ixian Grand & All Suites really has it all for anyone looking for an adults only holiday within a short flight time from the UK. There are two areas of the resort; the main pool and the beach area where the majority of guests spend their time. Full of energy throughout the day and night, the beach area also hosted the the top quality entertainment. We were allocated a corner suite with a private rooftop pool which allowed us to enjoy the atmosphere from the beach and the main pool whilst enjoying the privacy of just us in our own little oasis. As with the rooms, the whole of the hotel accommodates for everyone, if you would like a small bite to eat there are Gyros’s available at the pool snack bar, Alazonia restaurant offers more of a fine dining Mediterranean dishes with gorgeous views across the ocean (this was our favourite) and a magnificent Japanese restaurant with some of the best sushi we have tasted. For the ultimate romantic holiday, I’d recommend couples stay in the Beachfront Swim Up Sea View Suites, located directly on the waterfront, that comes with a wooden deck and sun beds. Guests staying in these suites will also be entitled to an a la carte lunch at Milonges, where you can sample the finest of Greek Cuisine, followed by dinner at the Alazonia restaurant. The team, food and drink, rooms, spa, atmosphere and just the overall experience was so good we booked an extra three nights and new flights. which says it all. We will be sure to book in another visit very soon. theixiangrand.gr

A l ta B Ba a dia in A utum utumn n Whether you are seeking action-packed adventure, relaxation, or both, Alta Badia offers the perfect combination writes Michael Gates Location Late summer and early autumn are some of the most beautiful times to visit Alta Badia, known for its majestic landscapes, hospitality, and natural unspoilt beauty. Located in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites, you can reach Alta Badia via Bolzano (90 minutess), Innsbruck (2 hours), Venice (3 hours), or drive via Eurotunnel (15hrs, London – Alta Badia). My partner and I flew via Venice and arranged a transfer which took just under 3 hours, although with the stunning scenery, the journey flew by.
suite was spacious with separate areas; the lounge furnished with a traditional stube, table and chairs. The stylish and elegant bathroom also featured a sauna, which was a perfect way to start the day or to relax after a day of activities.
Experience After a restful night’s sleep and a plentiful breakfast, we were recharged and ready for our first day of adventure. With lots of activities
Accommodation We were greeted with a warm and friendly welcome at the Kolfuschgerhof Mountain Resort, a family run hotel of three generations. Perched above the village of Colfosco, just outside Corvara, the hotel and spa boast some of the best views in the Dolomites. There is a choice of rooms and suites available, most of which have a balcony and a view of the Sella Group, the Sassongher, the Ciampac, and Colfosco. Our luxurious suite was a world of pure peace and calm, with ancient wood, refined textiles, and breathtaking views. The 77
to choose from, I was keen to experience electronic biking on the world’s highest fleet of e-bikes. A short taxi ride took us to the village of La Villa where we rode the Piz La Ila cable car to the mountain top station to collect our e-bikes. As a novice, it took a little while to adjust, but soon enough we were on our way, cycling across the mountain tops. There are many routes to explore, we opted for a steady route to Pralongia, where we stopped for a short break, marvelling at the views below, above and beyond. Having worked up an appetite, we headed back to the mountain hut Club Moritzino to experience Saus dl Altonn, which means ‘flavours of autumn’ in Ladin. In collaboration with local producers and farmers, the mountain hut chefs each create a different three course seasonal menu based on local produce and traditions, dishes included South Tyrolean beef tartare and ravioli with cheese fondue. All our dishes were delicious and accompanied by paired wines, which were equally as delightful. The atmosphere was fantastic, with live musical entertainment. Back at the Kolfuschgerhof Mountain Resort, wellbeing takes centre stage in the extensive spa, with a warm indoor pool and a series of interconnected rooms and saunas, each with different infusion rituals

dedicated to a specific beneficial property. You’ll also find a Turkish bath, soothing chill-out rooms and a waterbed room with relaxing background music. Taking things to the next level, the wellness area has been expanded to include an outside area with a panorama relaxation room with a fireplace and balcony. Outside you will also find the whirl-swimming pool and alpine sauna hut with its own relaxation room on the first floor. For those with a little more energy to burn there is a fitness room with views of the meadow-forest landscape. For dinner, we took a short ride to Maso Runch Farm, a family-run business of over 200 years, to experience some traditional and authentic Ladin cuisine. The tasting menu included barley soup, fried spinach and ricotta ravioli, pork shank with polenta
and pork chops with sauerkraut, the food and service were incredible. After another deep night’s sleep, we ventured on to the village of Badia and took a chairlift and a cable car up La Crusc/Santa Croce, a popular starting point for trekking and hiking. The vast hiking area around Alta Badia includes more than 400 km of wellsignposted hiking trails, but we opted for a leisurely 3-hour hike around the Armentara Meadows. We stopped for lunch at the La Crusc/Santa Croce mountain hut where sampled their speciality dish, Kaiserschmarren. Like a crepe but a little thicker and softer, Kaiserschmarren is cut up into pieces, covered with sugar and served with cranberry jam. In the afternoon we headed back to the sanctuary of the hotel spa to enjoy an individually tailored massage and the blissful outdoor wellness area. We then spent the final evening in the Restaurant Kolfuschgerhof where we enjoyed a romantic meal, followed by after-dinner cocktails sat by the roaring fire in the Bistrot lounge bar.
Personal Note Having been fortunate enough to have visited Alta Badia to ski in winter, I was excited to see what autumn had to offer. With the seasonal change in colours, the landscapes were fascinating, and in my view, more beautiful. There is so much to experience in Alta Badia, whether you are seeking action-packed adventure, relaxation, or both, Alta Badia has the perfect combination, making it an ideal getaway. So, whilst the days are still long enough, the climate is pleasant, and the atmosphere is calm and peaceful, an autumnal visit is highly recommended. Each autumn, Alta Badia’s lifts stay open until early October (this year until 6 October 2024) altabadia.org kolfuschgerhof.com 79

Lovers of compact luxury saloons rejoice, for there is a new Audi A4. Except it isn’t called the Audi A4, it’s called the Audi A5. Sound familiar? That’s because the Audi A5 is currently a coupe version of the A4, but that’s all about to change. The new A5 will be a like-for-like swap for the A4, complete with saloon and estate versions, as well as sportier S5 models with a bit of extra power. And that’s petrol power, too, with new and more efficient engines going in place of electric motors. The most powerful will be the S5 with its 362bhp 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine and all-wheel drive, although an RS version with even more power may be on the cards later. As usual with Audi, it’s a confusing number jumble, but the end product will likely be remarkable. audi.co.uk

DRIVE NEED FOR SPEED
Keeping you up to date with all the latest motoring and technology news WORDS: JAMES FOSSDYKE
Bentley has killed of f its legendar y W12 engines, and has instead turned to hybrid power in the new Continental GT Speed.
C
ar manufacturers the world over are having to come to terms with a rapidly changing climate and the resulting changes to automotive legislation. Crewe-based Bentley has been ahead of the curve in many ways, having already introduced hybrid versions of the Flying Spur and Bentayga models, as well as making the factory carbon-neutral in 2019. But now the time has come for things to get serious, and that means Bentley’s venerable twin-turbocharged, 6.0-litre W12 petrol engine has had to go. But that has left a gap in Bentley’s range, with no engine available to power the flagship Speed models, including the new Continental GT Speed. So Bentley simply took its 4.0-litre V8 engine, used to such great effect in the Continental GT S and the Bentayga S, then installed it in a plug-in hybrid system with an electric motor for extra oomph.
Of course, the blurb says this is more efficient – the new Continental GT Speed will cover 50 miles without using a drop of petrol – but performance is the name of the game. Because when you combine the V8 engine and the electric motor, you get a combined power output of 771bhp. That’s a gargantuan amount, and it takes the car from 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds and on to a 208mph top speed. That’s unbelievable performance, especially for a car that emits just 29g of carbon dioxide per kilometre on the official economy test. In contrast, the old GT Speed pumped out more than 300g per kilometre. The idea is that you smile, and the planet breathes a sigh of relief. Bentley Continental GT Speed, £TBC, bentleymotors.com 82

Just when you thought the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 didn’t need any more power, AMG has gone and added a new, even more potent version to the range. It’s called the GT 63 Pro and it has about 27bhp more power than the standard GT 63, for a total of 604bhp. That’s a lot, but the real increase in performance comes not from the 4.0-litre V8 under the bonnet, but from the aerodynamic tweaks to the bodywork, sportier tyres and enhanced cooling, all of which is supposed to make the car faster on a race track. But statistics are still crucial, and the GT 63 Pro has those in abundance. Getting from 0-62mph takes just 3.2 seconds and the top speed is 197mph, but Mercedes-AMG reckons you’ll really see the difference on a circuit. It’s shaping up to be a remarkable thing. THE GENESIS OF SOMETHING AMAZING Genesis is still a bit of a newbie in the new car market, but it has already impressed with some brilliant products, including the electric GV60 SUV. But for all its luxury and craftsmanship, the Genesis range hasn’t really felt very sporty. Until now. The GV60 is the first in a line of Genesis products to get a high-performance Magma variant, which will go into production late next year. Much more aggressive (and much more orange), it’s set to rival the fastest Tesla Model Y and other go-faster electric vehicles. Performance figures are as yet unknown, but we saw it beat the brilliant Porsche Taycan in a hillclimb at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this summer, so we know it’s going to be immensely quick. Putting hybrid power in the Porsche 911 was always going to rouse the rabble, but in the 911 Targa 4 GTS, writes James Fossdyke, Porsche has got it absolutely spot on
T
o the many, the Porsche 911 is a bit unimaginative, but there are those for whom the 911 is some kind of sacred cow with which nothing else can compete. These people are not like you and me. They have elevated the car they adore to a kind of mythological status, and they get deeply upset if someone — even if that someone works for Porsche — dares to modify the story. It’s these people who became very agitated when Porsche announced it would offer the new 911 with a hybrid powertrain. It’s called the T-Hybrid system and it’s designed to make the new sports car more powerful without making it any more polluting. It sounds like a good idea, right? But the baying mob thought differently, and some of the online abuse aimed at Porsche was, to put it mildly, vitriolic. And we should know, because Porsche showed us some of it. What’s really ridiculous is that though Porsche will happily sell you a 911 T-Hybrid, it will be equally delighted to sell you a petrol-powered version of the new 911. In fact, most versions of the new model will not have any kind of hybrid system whatsoever. So far, the sole T-Hybrid-equipped cars are the mid-range GTS models, which are the slightly sporty versions designed predominantly for road use, but aimed at those who’ll occasionally take their car on a track day. Despite the plainly insane abuse, Porsche has the kind of easy confidence with which it can brush off this sort of thing. This is a company that knows what it’s doing, trusts its engineers and is very happy to back them to the hilt. And it’s happy to let the new 911 GTS models do their talking on the road and on the race track. In fairness to Porsche, if you forget about the hybrid system for a moment, the new 911 GTS models haven’t deviated too far from the recipe that has made them so popular over the years. As before, they’re available in Coupe, Cabriolet and Targa forms, and it’s the latter tested here. With the glasshouse at the rear, the big roll hoop and a retractable fabric panel between the aforementioned hoop and the windscreen, it’s something of a halfway house between the Coupe and Cabriolet.
All three versions look a bit sportier than the standard 911 Carrera models, thanks to black trim all around the windows and black lettering on the badges, as well as dark alloy wheels and different bumpers. At the front, that means the 911 GTS gets these funny gill things, which aren’t especially attractive, but they work as an aerodynamic aid, automatically moving to reduce drag or improve cooling, depending on the car’s needs. Inside, the cabin is available with all manner of options, but the standard GTS gets Race-Tex microfibre that’s inspired by racing car interiors, and there’s black trim everywhere. It also gets a new digital instrument display, which is an improvement on the old system because you can actually see it. The old 911’s instrument cluster was mostly hidden behind the steering wheel, and that’s not an issue with the new one. The GTS models’ attitudes are the same, too, with a focus on sporty driving on the road and on the circuit. As if attempting the impossible, Porsche has tried to make the GTS variants handle even better than the standard 911 Carrera models, which were already pretty magical. They’re finely honed and beautifully balanced, and they go like droppings off a digging implement. So Porsche set to work making the GTS cars sharper, with modified suspension that makes them feel sharper in corners, and four-wheel steering to make them turn more tightly at low speed and become more stable at high speeds. But the big difference is the T-Hybrid system, for which Porsche has copped so much flak. But despite the name, this isn’t a hybrid system like the one in a Toyota, or even in a Porsche Cayenne. There’s no plugging it in, there’s no driving short distances on electricity alone, and there’s no massive improvement in fuel economy. This is all about power and performance, and it delivers in spades. In essence, the hybrid system comprises five basic components. One is a 41kW electric motor, and that lives inside the second component, an eight-speed automatic gearbox. There’s also a battery to power the motor, and there’s a petrol engine. But not just any petrol engine. It’s a 3.6-litre flat-six, and that’s assisted by the fifth and final component: a whopping great electrically assisted turbocharger.

Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS Price: £149,100 Gearbox: 8-speed automatic Engine: 3.6-litre six-cylinder ‘T-Hybrid’ petrol 0-62mph: 3.1 seconds Top speed: 194mph Power: 534bhp
That means the engine isn’t just being aided by the electric motor, but by a turbocharger that uses electricity to spool up more quickly, effectively making it more responsive. The result is a total of 534bhp, which is a huge amount by almost anyone’s standards. In the case of the Targa 4 GTS we tested, the power is split between all four of its massive wheels, and there’s clever software to help the car make best use of that power. And it allows the car to get from 0-62mph in 3.1 seconds, before it roars onto a 194mph top speed. And it’s the slowest GTS model of them all. With less complex roof systems, the Coupe and Cabriolet models are much lighter than the Targa, so they’ll manage the 0-62mph dash in three seconds flat. But as well as offering immense power and pretty sensational handling (seriously, the steering is outrageously good), all three GTS models also share an awesome and animalistic soundtrack. The noise is biblical, assaulting your eardrums with the roar of exploding petrol
86
whenever you go near the throttle, and then snorting like an angry badger whenever you back off. And it’s especially brutal – and therefore brilliant – when you put the exhaust in its sportiest setting. You’d never guess it was a hybrid. The open-top Cabriolet and Targa models only put you closer to the action, but strangely, that isn’t the reason why I think the Targa – the slowest of the GTS models – is the best. No, it’s because of a strange quirk of engineering. You see, the GTS Coupe and Cabriolet’s sit 10mm lower than those of the standard 911 models, in a move designed to improve handling, but that makes them both quite stiff. Yet the Targa sits at the same height as the basic Carreras, so while you might notice a fraction more lean in corners on a race track, you’re much more likely to notice a significant improvement in comfort on the road. Combine that with the looks, the ability to open the roof and the sound and performance of that engine, and you’ve got something wonderful. It’s fast, fun and more practical than you expect, so forget all the stuff about this being the first hybrid 911. This is one of the best 911s yet, and that’s all you need to know.

W hy Black is th t h is Seaso Seas on’s Most Popular Colour Tash Bradley, Director of Interior Design and Colour Psychologist at Lick, shares her advice on why black is trending right now and how to decorate with this classic colour:
G
oodbye Brat Green Summer - home decor is taking a darker turn for Autumn/Winter, with Lick reporting a huge 340% uplift in sales of black paint*. “In the world of interiors, many view black as a colour that requires a level of bravery and boldness to decorate with, but this is changing. Whether used as a dominant colour on your walls or as an accent colour on your woodwork, black is the perfect choice for creating elegant and timeless spaces and it’s clear that decorators are opening up to the potential and versatility of this colour within their homes. This sophisticated colour creates inviting, intimate spaces with a strong design identity.” “As the summer holidays wind down at the end of August and we begin to transition into the cooler months, dark hues are the perfect go-to colours for decorating - and what colour can be darker than black? A classic matt black absorbs all natural light, so if you’ve got a room that lacks sunlight, such as a bedroom or small space, lean into that by colour drenching your space with black to create a calming and cocooning effect. This is especially important as the nights draw in and we start losing access to natural light, making a strong case for embracing your cosy corners and opting for darker colours.” “Black colours with warm, red undertones, such as Lick Black 02, exude elegance, creating spaces that feel empowering and decadent, perfect for a dining room and spaces where you plan to entertain guests. Black 02 has a timeless appeal and a comforting quality which will effortlessly transition your space into the autumn. Another velvety black I recommend is Lick Black 01, which is a bold, graphite black, with

blue undertones which will inject energy into your space during the sluggish winter months. Lick’s M·A·C Black 40 is the colour that everyone can have in their homes. It’s a rich, true matt hue which is so versatile. This elegant and empowering black pairs seamlessly with Lick White 02 for a high-contrast monochromatic look or Lick White 05 for a softer, neutral scheme.” *stat taken since the Lick x M·A·C collaboration launched on Lick.com on 8/8/24

TASH’S TOP METHODS TO INCLUDE BLACK IN YOUR INTERIORS: • Accent colour: “Every room can benefit from an accent of black to bring contrast and depth. The best way to do this is to use black to accentuate a feature, such as a staircase or fireplace, to draw your attention to the architectural highlights of your home.” • 50/50 decorating: “This monochrome effect will help to trick the eye and open up your space, especially if you use black on the bottom 50% of the room and a light neutral on the top 50%. The key thing to remember is to ensure everything in that lower 50% should also be black, including radiators and skirting boards.” • Colour drenching: “Colour drenching with black will help to create a very calm environment. If you have a small, north-facing room, this is a great option as black will absorb the shadows, blur the edges of the space and wrap around you like one big hug.” • Pattern play: “Black pairs with every other colour, so you can have a bit of fun with it. Pattern play helps to open up a room and vertical stripes will elongate your space. Whatever your style, black is a truly versatile colour with lots of potential for creativity.”
