The Hit List’s Rochelle and Marvin Humes are are back to host three teams battling it out to become the ultimate music masters and take home the grand prize

Since 2019, The Hit List has continued to captivate audiences with its blend of nostalgia, competition, and musical excitement. The BBC One show, challenges contestants to name as many hit songs and artists as possible under intense pressure. Presented by fan favourites Rochelle and Marvin Humes, the show features three pairs of contestants who showcase their music knowledge for a chance to win a £10,000 jackpot.

How does it feel to be in the seventh series of The Hit List?

Rochelle: It’s so weird when you hear that it’s actually seven years, but at the same time, it still feels so fresh, which is a nice place to be in. We say it all the time, but it’s our dream show. It’s

the show that we’d be watching if we didn’t host it. So we’re just happy that it’s back!

What’s your favourite part about hosting the series together?

Marvin: Working with my wife, that’s my favourite part. This is the only thing that we do together professionally, and it’s a very unique thing to do because it doesn’t feel like work. We’re doing a show that we love and we know it inside out. Working with Roch is super easy because I’m working with the person I know the best and vice versa. We’re very, very lucky, and very fortunate - and we are still married after seven years!

The show has both regular episodes and celebrity specials. How do the dynamics differ between these two types of episodes?

Rochelle: With the celebrity episodes, the contestants have this confidence that they’re going to perform really well, so sometimes it’s quite amazing to watch how the mighty fall [laughs]. Then in our civilian shows, those contestants are much more tuned into the gameplay. Their knowledge of music is so brilliant, but they’re always a little bit more unassuming. I quite like the difference in the dynamic because it’s the complete opposite.

Marvin: The civilian shows record very quickly, because they’re like a human Shazam! Whereas the celebrity ones, although they are a lot of fun, we often run out of songs because the celebrity contestants keep skipping them instead of answering the question.

The Hit List has become a staple for Saturday night TV. What do you think makes the show so appealing to viewers?

Rochelle:The Hit List has that family value - it’s perfect for parents, for kids, for your granny! It’s a real family viewing experience. That’s always a winner in our home because we always love to have something that our siblings, our friends, our parents, our kids can all sit down and watch together.

Marvin: It’s got that inclusivity built into the rounds - especially the first round where we go from the 2010s back to the 70s. No matter what age you are, you’re going to know at least a couple of the songs.

If you could choose any music artist to make a guest appearance on The Hit List, who would it be and why?

Marvin: I always say the same person, and that’s Sir Elton John. Obviously he is an absolute music legend, an icon and he’s been making music for decades now! But he’s also so in tune with today’s music. He’s got a radio show on Apple Music and he’s always championing new artists, so he’s really got his finger on the pulse of what’s fresh and what’s trending. I’d love to know if he watches The Hit List! We love having radio DJs as well. They tend to be super competitive because they’re listening to music all day every day.

Rochelle:They take it very seriously, especially because in those episodes, they’re playing for money for charity but you can also tell that they’re in it to win for themselves!

Marvin: It’s always fun to play with DJ’s too because these are people that know that they should do well, but then they get knocked out in the first round! They are worried that their expertise is going to get challenged.

What has been the most surprising or impressive musical knowledge displayed by a contestant?

Marvin: This season we have Sally Lindsay and Eddie Kadi as a team.

“Rochelle: We say it all the time, but it’s our dream show. It’s the show that we’d be watching if we didn’t host it

Rochelle: That was my favourite duo!

Marvin: They had different music tastes but they managed to fill in each other’s gaps perfectly!

” each

Rochelle: Eddie is a massive afrobeats fan, and he was able to pick an “Afrobeat” game in one of the rounds and managed to knock the other team out, so they played really tactically.

Marvin: Those are always the best combinations, when you’ve got two people coming together from two different music backgrounds. That’s why parent and child combinations are always great!

Which is a more intense atmosphereI’m A Celebrity… or The Hit List?

Marvin: [laughs] The Hit List is a walk in the park! I actually have a little I’m A Celebrity… reunion with Nick Pickard and Danielle Harold on this season and it was the first time I’d seen them since the jungle, so that was great. When you’ve lived in the jungle with someone you have a really unique connection, so it was really great to get to see them again.

Tell us about some of the celebrity specials we can look forward to this season

Marvin: We had Jedward on the show and they were absolutely amazing. They were so up for it and had so many amazing stories to share. They were name dropping constantly - everyone from Whitney Houston to Gemma Collins! But then, during the gameplay they were unstoppable, we were so impressed. We also had Layton Williams and Angela Scanlon on another episode…

Rochelle: Layton was performing for us and everything!

Marvin: He was just amazing. Then we had Rick Edwards and Harry Judd and they were great,

“Marvin: Working with my wife, that’s my favourite part. This is the only thing that we do together professionally, and it’s a very unique thing to do because it doesn’t feel like work

Paul Sinha and Joe Sugg, who were brilliant.

Rochelle: I mean, Paul is the quizmaster, right?

Marvin: Of course! He’s a Chaser. But he is equally very good with music knowledge as well. The celeb specials for this season are great.

What do you enjoy most about interacting with the contestants?

Rochelle: It has to be their love of music. Of course, our roots for both of us are in music. So to be around people that enjoy it as much as we do is a dream. And you can tell when we’re filming that everybody loves it as much as us, so we’re always so happy that they’re as excited to be a part of it as we are.

Do you find it difficult to not shout out the answers?

Rochelle: Sometimes it’s tricky, and on the celeb shows because it’s for charity we do have to spoon feed them the answers sometimes [laughs]. But in the civilian episodes when they’re playing for money for themselves, we can’t help them out because it has to be taken really seriously. But we’re always rooting for them!

Are you competitive amongst each other with games? Do you ever play The Hit List at home?

Rochelle: I’m not very competitive but we do love to play it at home with the kids. We play every Christmas with buzzers and everything, but I’m like, “Marv, you have to host the rounds” because it’s actually so irritating to play with him [laughs].

Marvin: My mates like to challenge me and I play it with them, but yeah, I host the rounds at home.

Are there any shows you would like to compete on as a couple?

Rochelle: I’d love to do something like Bake Off! I think that could be quite fun. Marv is not good at baking but I’m pretty good at cooking. Marvin: Yeah, your last Bake Off experience wasn’t that good, was it?

Rochelle: I’m going to defend myself here because I took part in a charity special of Bake Off years ago and accidentally doused my dessert in salt instead of sugar because I didn’t read the label correctly. I was so smug too and Mary Berry was still hosting it then so I was really trying to impress her. So yeah, I think I’d do Bake Off again but make sure it was sugar rather than salt this time!

With collections setting the pace of the fashion seasons, Fall constitutes a particular period of reflection for Maria Grazia Chiuri, and an ongoing questioning that is constantly renewed. Each time, the wardrobe is revitalised by a series of pieces of which their unique construction, cuts, materials, and creativity have what it takes to meet all women’s needs. This Dior line is an opportunity to pay homage to New York, the metropolis that was given – as a gift from the French to the United States at the end of the 19th century – a statue which has since become the symbol of this incredible city. In Christian Dior’s autobiography, the chapter dedicated to his Paris-New York trip opens up a dialogue between the style capitals that Maria Grazia Chiuri highlights in two key prints: the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower that flourish in large format on numerous models. The bridge between both cultures is Marlene Dietrich, a charismatic, contrarian actress, attached to Dior, in life and on screen. Maria Grazia Chiuri drew inspiration from her to build a collection that fuses the Dior silhouette with the diva’s phantasmagorical presence and boyish allure. The tweeds used came directly from a selection of English menswear fabrics. In his Petit dictionnaire de la mode, Monsieur Dior wrote: “In the last few years, tweeds have extended their use even for dressy suits. I think they are extremely elegant.

To wear them in the country is a ‘must’. At one time, you could only get tweeds in a rather heavy weight but now you can get them in all weights and qualities and colours.” Marlene Dietrich’s masculine suits provoked scandal, asserting, let us not forget, a woman’s right to choose her attire as she pleases, a tie or a sleeveless vest, for instance: so many emblems that complement each other. Jackets are paired with wide-leg pants or below-theknee pencil skirts.

The precious and sometimes very light dresses, recalling the style of the ‘40s, give a glimpse of the lingerie that turns out to be an essential part of the outfit. Fabrics such as hammered satin, crushed velvet and crepe are reinterpreted in a contemporary spirit. Some of the lace-encrusted slip dresses, often revealed beneath large, lined coats, are made from quilted nylon featuring the cannage motif. The embroidery evokes brooches and echoes the signature codes so dear to the founding-couturier: the star, the lily of the valley, the clover and the bee. The lace collars become veritable structural intarsias. As for knitwear, a virtuoso level of inventiveness has allowed multiple facets of its extraordinary plurality to be developed.

A range of possibilities that celebrates the meeting of cultures. A conversation about freedom that gives shape and substance to whatever each woman chooses to be. dior.com

KNOWING THE VALUE OF LOCAL, PERSONAL SERVICE

As our world shifts increasingly online, many things have become easier. But often, online speed means less ability to make things truly personal to you and your lifestyle. And for products such as your home insurance, a ‘one size fits all’ approach can feel less thorough, impersonal and leave a sense of unease on whether your requirements have really been met.

And for products such as your home insurance, a ‘one size fits all’ approach can feel less thorough, impersonal and leave a sense of unease on whether your requirements have really been met.

And, if you have a large home with high-value items that require more careful consideration, it’s all the more important that you feel confident and have the opportunity to have a thorough conversation about your needs and expectations.

By translating into essence its de ning secret, Fornasetti has created its rst extrait de parfum collection. The universal language of imagination is encapsulated in three fragrances that evoke an intimate, subjective, and timeless narrative. Each fragrance stops time from being time, to become a lingering dream, a mesmerising desire, an unforeseen secret. Each scent has its own identity and character, interpreted visually by three variations from the unmistakable Tema e Variazioni series, inspired by the face of the 19th century opera singer Lina Cavalieri, a classical beauty with an enigmatic gaze, an icon that has become the symbol of Fornasetti and his poetry. harrods.com

NFU Mutual Stamford supports local charity MindSpace in their wellbeing efforts

NFU Mutual Stamford agency recently nominated local charity MindSpace Stamford as one of their chosen charities to receive a donation from NFU Mutual’s national £1.92 million

‘Agency Giving Fund’. Nestled in the heart of Stamford, MindSpace is more than just a charity; it is a sanctuary for wellbeing. With a mission to improve the lives of residents, MindSpace offers a variety of events and activities designed to foster community and individual growth.

MindSpace operates on the principle of the “5 ways to wellbeing” – connect, be active, pause and take notice, grow, learn, and give. This approach is evident in the wide range of free-of-charge, community-led activities they offer. From tea and chat sessions to creative workshops, each event is aimed at bringing people together and providing support in a non-judgmental environment.

Another gem in MindSpace’s repertoire is the NightLight Café, hosted at their Wellbeing Hub on Broad Street. This evening event provides a relaxed, welcoming environment where people can unwind, enjoy a hot drink, and engage in meaningful conversations. It’s an initiative aimed at combating loneliness and offering a safe space for those who might need support after hours.

One of the standout features of MindSpace is its Wellbeing Garden, a green oasis that serves as both a retreat and a venue for various events. The garden hosts activities such as the Creative Fete, where local residents can learn new skills and engage in creative pursuits. It’s a place where people can connect with nature, grow produce, and find a sense of peace and accomplishment.

MindSpace thrives on community involvement. They welcome volunteers, donations, and participants for their events. By joining hands with MindSpace, you can contribute to a healthier, happier Stamford. For more information about their events or to get involved, search MindSpace Stamford.

Planning for the Future…

If your child is taking their GCSEs next summer, the chances are you will already be thinking about their future after this milestone event

At Stamford Sixth Form, we know that the transition from Sixth Form to higher education or the workplace marks a pivotal phase in any young person’s educational journey.

At Stamford Sixth Form, we pride ourselves on providing a nurturing environment that balances academic challenges with comprehensive pastoral care. Our diverse curriculum, coupled with life skills and Futures Programmes, ensures our students are well-prepared for the dynamic world beyond school once they leave us.

Stamford is a place where we strive to get the very best from each individual, whatever that might be. We take a holistic approach to education, where academic success is balanced with personal development. Students are encouraged to engage in a variety of enrichment activities, promoting skills such as leadership, teamwork, and resilience.

Stamford Sixth Form aims to provide a robust and comprehensive education that prepares students for their future, whether in higher education or professional careers. The curriculum is designed to offer a broad selection of subjects, allowing students to pursue their passions and interests while achieving academic excellence. The ambition is to foster a learning environment that supports high achievement, critical thinking, and independent research skills, exemplified by opportunities such as the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).

Stamford offers 28 different subjects at A Level and 3 BTEC courses plus 1 Cambridge Technicals course. This means students can choose the subjects they love, as well as ensuring they are equipped with the knowledge and qualifications needed to enter

further education or the workplace in the future.

Around 90% of our Sixth Form who apply to UCAS go on to university, including Oxford, Cambridge, and Russell Group universities. Whether students are interested in a career, degree apprenticeships, further education, travel, gap years or volunteering, our priority is to work with students to help them understand the right options available.

“Lots of academic support for sixth form including a weekly 1:1 tutor session for every student which encompasses pastoral support as well. Pupils seemed relaxed and comfortable, with each other, their surroundings and teachers. This makes sense as they are no longer rushing across town to make lesson times. But that doesn’t detract from their obvious focus and ambition. They have their eye on the prize here.” Good Schools Guide April 2024.

Learning Environment

Our Sixth Form site at St Martin’s has recently been refurbished to provide students with a modern and adult focused learning space. The St Martin’s space has been carefully designed to offer spacious classrooms, a TED style lecture theatre, common rooms and a student café along with the dining hall and atrium breakout areas. Students are advised how to collaborate in different rooms – silent, individual study, breakout rooms or meeting rooms to learn about office or university culture, and interactive large open spaces including use of the TED theatre for debate and discussions. This environment helps prepare students for life after school, mirroring the workplace and university. We understand that not everyone learns in the same way, in the same environment, so giving options gives students a variety in choice.

Stamford Sixth Form is more than just an academic institution; it is a community dedicated to nurturing well-rounded individuals ready

to make their mark on the world. Our comprehensive academic and pastoral offerings, combined with an emphasis on life skills and future readiness, ensure that our students leave us as rounded and grounded individuals with the confidence and capabilities to thrive in whatever path they choose.

Study Skills Mentoring and Tutors:

The study mentoring programme at Stamford Sixth Form is designed to provide students with academic support and guidance to enhance their learning experience. The aim is to help students achieve their full academic potential by addressing individual needs and fostering a supportive learning environment.

Personalised tutoring:

• Each student is assigned a tutor who provides one-on-one, on-going support throughout their time at Sixth Form.

• Tutors help students set academic goals, develop study plans, and track their progress.

• Regular meetings ensure that students receive consistent guidance and support.

Students are encouraged to manage their own time, to make appointments with their individual tutors and work in a more flexible way to study, whilst remaining in the structured setting of a school environment. We hope that offering a unique, flexible, and varied program to our students will ensure their time at Stamford is valuable, life affirming and enjoyable.

Academic Support:

• Our study mentor then assists with subject-specific challenges, helping students understand difficult concepts and improve their study skills.

• They provide advice on effective study techniques, time management, and exam preparation.

• Additional support is available for students needing help with coursework and assignments.

“You have a wonderful school. I am extremely happy that my son has had the opportunity to study with you during 6th form. One of his teachers also provided him with additional lessons during half term to help with a resist exam. This was much appreciated.”

(Parent of Year 13 student, June 2024).

Prepared for Life:

Stamford Sixth Form offers a variety of taught short courses for Year 12 students, designed to complement the main curriculum and provide students with

additional learning opportunities. These courses are aimed at enhancing students’ skills and knowledge in specific areas, often focusing on practical and applied learning.

These courses provide supplementary education beyond the standard A Level and BTEC subjects. They cover a range of topics, including both academic and vocational subjects. Short courses are tailored to develop specific skills that are valuable for both further education and future careers. They often include practical components to give students hands-on experience. These courses can enrich students’ educational experiences by allowing them to explore interests that may not be covered in the standard curriculum.

There are many benefits to the Stamford taught short courses. Students gain additional knowledge and skills that complement their main studies. These courses often focus on practical skills that are directly applicable to the workplace as well as encouraging students to explore new areas of interest and develop a broader skill set.

Stamford Futures:

The Stamford Futures Programme is an integral part of the Stamford Sixth Form experience, designed to provide comprehensive support and guidance to students as they prepare for their postsecondary education and career paths. The programme offers a range of resources and activities aimed at helping students make informed decisions about their futures.

Stamford’s Futures ethos is simple: we believe that the purpose of school is to connect the past, present and future for our young people. In our Futures Programme, we guide and empower our students to become the best possible version of themselves as they leave Stamford and take the first steps into their future beyond school. We ask our students, ‘Who could you be, and would you like to be? We collaborate with them to help them find the best next steps to take towards their future fulfilment.

The Stamford Futures Programme offers students:

• Personalised Career Guidance

• Work Experience and Internships

• Workshops and Seminars

• University and Apprenticeship Support

• Networking Opportunities

Career Options:

Our Futures Programme equips students with the tools and knowledge needed to explore a wide range of career options. By offering a well-rounded support system through the Futures Programme, we ensure that students are well-prepared to embark on their chosen career paths with confidence and clarity. ROMANTIC ESCAPE

For couples looking for a Sicilian retreat, Palazzo Previtera, a luxury guesthouse, contemporary art gallery and living museum situated in the quiet town of Linguaglossa has opened a new suite in a restored dovecote and adding an infinity swimming pool. A 10 year restoration, overseen by Alfio Puglisi, a descendent of the family that built the palazzo in 1649, resulted in Palazzo Previtera opening to guests for the first time in 2023. The interiors of the suite honour the Italian art deco era with a 1930s double bed and armchairs, sourced by the family from Milan before WW2. Geometric shapes and bold colours are combined with luxurious materials such as Caracalla and Guatemala marble in the bathroom. Oak parquet floors continue the mid century look in the bedroom, while the bathroom is accessorised with retro tap fittings. A highlight of the new suite is a roof terrace with clear views over to Mount Etna.

The new infinity pool, open to all guests, is surrounded by white stone tiles with wooden deck chairs and vibrant persimmonorange coloured ceramic coffee tables. Lined with rainwater blue tiles, the pool is filled with sea salt sourced from the Marsala salt pans in Western Sicily. palazzoprevitera.com

WORDS: Phil Aird-Mash

Sometimes a holiday is more than just a holiday. When it comes to those romantic milestones, like a honeymoon or anniversary, travel is a way to mark a moment you want to cherish forever with a truly once-in-a-lifetime memory.

At ITC, our Travel Specialists have created some unbelievable experiences. Recently, I heard about one of our Inspiring Travel clients who honeymooned in French Polynesia and had the incredible opportunity to snorkel the waters as whales passed by – they even heard the whale song while submerged under the waves, something I’m sure they’ll never forget.

So, if you’re looking for some seriously special ideas for two, you

can rest assured that we have plenty. Australia is one of my favourite recommendations for couples, as there are so many magical moments to be had; spend the night at luxury desert camp, Longitude 131°, looking out at Uluru as the sun sets over the monumental rock, or head to the Whitsunday Islands to explore the Great Barrier Reef together.

For nature lovers, our Rainbow team have invaluable advice. Visit Madagascar to hide away in a remote lodge and spot the iconic lemurs of Andasibe-Mantadia National Park before hopping over to Mauritius for some snorkelling. Or, opt for an adventure in Costa Rica, hiking the cloud forests, white water rafting the rapids and unwinding in treetop eco-lodges, serenaded by the chirruping birds.

For something really unique, ask our Regent team about Pater Noster

CHEETAH TRAIL EXPERIENCE

Home to some of the best beaches in the world, the Maldives offers an assortment of unrivalled luxury, white sandy beaches and a supreme underwater world, making it the perfect choice for a trip of a lifetime

This necklace of islands in the Indian Ocean defines many people’s idea of balmy perfection: blissful blue lagoons, coral reefs and seclusion, only granted due to the country’s multiple islands offering privacy like no other. Due to paradise’s proximity to the equator, the Maldives experiences consistently warm weather all year round.

With nearly 1,200 islands offering postcard picture moments, no two are ever quite the same. Every resort in Maldives is its own hidden oasis, and with over 100 to choose from the only problem is selecting where you want to stay.

A world away from the everyday, The Residence Maldives on the islands of Falhumaafushi and Dhigurah have been designed in harmony with the natural environment and seamlessly blend traditional Maldivian architecture with

contemporary elegance and modern comforts. While tropical beachfront villas open to a private oasis just steps from the sand, luxurious over-water villas offer the cool pleasure of slipping straight from the deck into a personal lagoon.

Teeming with natural beauty that beckons to be explored, here are 10 reasons to visit The Residence Maldives and the idyllic islands.

#1 - The Residence Maldives is made up of The Residence Maldives at Falhumaafushi and The Residence Maldives at Dhigurah. Both resorts are connected by the longest private bridge in the Maldives, allowing guests to travel between the two whenever they choose. Jump on a golf buggy with a member of the hotel team, cycle along in the sunshine or stroll hand in hand and spot the turtles, colourful fishes and eagle rays which swim underneath.

#2 - Two resorts in one-guests staying at either resort can cross use the facilities and dining options of the sister resort, whether on half board or all-inclusive, providing guests a twin island experience in one stay.

#3 - Easily accessible from the private bridge, guests at both resorts have access to the small, yet charming,

castaway island, situated between the two islands. The hotel’s dedicated team can create a bespoke experience for each guest, from organising a picnic lunch to hosting an evening BBQ. The perfect spot to wind down the day.

#4 - With 94 villas at Falhumaafushi and 173 villas at Dhigurah, the combined inventory forms one of the largest resorts in the south of Maldives. Guests have various room category options to choose from in a beach villa with their own private beachfront, lagoon villas situated along the shoreline of the island or a water villa.

#5 - There are 9 restaurants and 6 bars to choose from across both islands spanning cuisine from across the globe, which can be enjoyed by guests at either resort. Pair poolside relaxation with light meals and tapas at Café del Sol, experience exquisite Cantonese at Li Bai, spend a romantic evening fine dining under the stars by the water at The Falhumaa or sit in the swimming pool for a light lunch at The Beach Bar.

#6 - The Residence Maldives at Falhumaafushi and The Residence Maldives at Dhigurah are the only two resorts in the Maldives which have the exclusive Spaby Clarins, offering an array of holistic treatments, pampering massages, hair services and spa programmes. Featuring over water treatment pavilions at both spas, daily sunrise and sunset yoga classes, seek solace for the mind, body and spirit.

#7 - The Residence Maldives is located in the deepest and largest atoll of Gaafu Alifu in the world–and therefore the dream destination for diving-where the resort is surrounded by pristine underwater landscapes and colourful corals filled with various

marine life. The resort’s own PADI 5* Dive Centre provides beginner lessons for non-divers to guided dives for certified divers to explore the underwater world. With many dive sites untouched by mankind, divers and snorkellers alike can find various hard and soft corals, sponges, sea fans as well as triggerfishes, parrot fishes, fusiliers, tunas, turtles, barracudas, rays (eagle rays, sting rays, manta rays) and sharks (grey reef sharks, white and black tip reef sharks, nurse sharks, leopard sharks).

#8 - The hotel cultivates their own herbs for the spa to incorporate into uplifting, health-focused beverages as well as producing house-made virgin coconut oil for its treatments.

#9 - The team have recently launched the Earth Basket programme, an island farm showcasing native produce that is then used in the hotel kitchens. On-site activations also cater to guests of all ages, enabling them to create memorable first-hand experiences with nature. The farms serve as immersive showcases of local biodiversity with head gardeners leading tours for guests to learn about the ecosystem and native plants. Cookery classes for children or adults can also be organised, incorporating this fresh produce into mouthwatering, Maldivian delights.

#10 - The Residence Maldives has introduced a series of sustainability projects as further steps towards being more eco-friendly. The resort has installed solar panels to produce its own electricity and to reduce its diesel consumption; introduced a rainwater harvesting system; removed plastic water bottles and replaced them with glass with the introduction of the water recycling plant; recycled food waste into compost for the Earth Basketkitchen garden and started producing their own herbs, fruits and vegetables which the chefs incorporate into restaurant meals.

My Experience

The Residence Maldives is one of the most charming resorts we have visited; a romantic, adult-only oasis with sweeping views across the ocean; exactly what you dream the Maldives to be.

We arrived after a short flight from Male airport and a 10 minute transfer by road to the resort, we were greeted with a traditional Sangu Shell welcome. A gorgeous one bedroom Deluxe Water Pool Villa was waiting for us, which offered the benefit of direct access to the sea (and glorious ocean views) as well as our own private pool. So heavenly was the villa that we didn’t want to leave, so appreciated the option of room service.

When we did fancy exploring, the islands offered us plenty of opportunities. A highlight was cycling across the longest bridge in the Maldives from The Residence Falhumaafushi to its sister property The Residence Dhigurah, taking in all the stunning scenery.

No holiday is complete without enjoying some delicious cuisine or an ice-cold cocktail in the sunshine – and there are so many places you can do this at The Residence Maldives. This place is paradise; the perfect destination to kick back, unwind and immerse yourself in complete comfort. We would return in a heartbeat! cenizaro.com

Whether you are seeking action-packed adventure, relaxation, or both, Alta Badia offers the perfect combination writes Michael Gates

Location

Late summer and early autumn are some of the most beautiful times to visit Alta Badia, known for its majestic landscapes, hospitality, and natural unspoilt beauty.

Located in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites, you can reach Alta Badia via Bolzano (90 minutess), Innsbruck (2 hours), Venice (3 hours), or drive via Eurotunnel (15hrs, London – Alta Badia).

My partner and I flew via Venice and arranged a transfer which took just under 3 hours, although with the stunning scenery, the journey flew by.

Accommodation

We were greeted with a warm and friendly welcome at the Kolfuschgerhof Mountain Resort, a family run hotel of three generations. Perched above the village of Colfosco, just outside Corvara, the hotel and spa boast some of the best views in the Dolomites. There is a choice of rooms and suites available, most of which have a balcony and a view of the Sella Group, the Sassongher, the Ciampac, and Colfosco. Our luxurious suite was a world of pure peace and calm, with ancient wood, refined textiles, and breathtaking views. The

suite was spacious with separate areas; the lounge furnished with a traditional stube, table and chairs. The stylish and elegant bathroom also featured a sauna, which was a perfect way to start the day or to relax after a day of activities.

Experience

After a restful night’s sleep and a plentiful breakfast, we were recharged and ready for our first day of adventure. With lots of activities

to choose from, I was keen to experience electronic biking on the world’s highest fleet of e-bikes. A short taxi ride took us to the village of La Villa where we rode the Piz La Ila cable car to the mountain top station to collect our e-bikes. As a novice, it took a little while to adjust, but soon enough we were on our way, cycling across the mountain tops. There are many routes to explore, we opted for a steady route to Pralongia, where we stopped for a short break, marvelling at the views below, above and beyond.

Having worked up an appetite, we headed back to the mountain hut Club Moritzino to experience Saus dl Altonn, which means ‘flavours of autumn’ in Ladin. In collaboration with local producers and farmers, the mountain hut chefs each create a different three course seasonal menu based on local produce and traditions, dishes included South Tyrolean beef tartare and ravioli with cheese fondue. All our dishes were delicious and accompanied by paired wines, which were equally as delightful. The atmosphere was fantastic, with live musical entertainment.

Back at the Kolfuschgerhof Mountain Resort, wellbeing takes centre stage in the extensive spa, with a warm indoor pool and a series of interconnected rooms and saunas, each with different infusion rituals

dedicated to a specific beneficial property. You’ll also find a Turkish bath, soothing chill-out rooms and a waterbed room with relaxing background music.

Taking things to the next level, the wellness area has been expanded to include an outside area with a panorama relaxation room with a fireplace and balcony. Outside you will also find the whirl-swimming pool and alpine sauna hut with its own relaxation room on the first floor. For those with a little more energy to burn there is a fitness room with views of the meadow-forest landscape.

For dinner, we took a short ride to Maso Runch Farm, a family-run business of over 200 years, to experience some traditional and authentic Ladin cuisine. The tasting menu included barley soup, fried spinach and ricotta ravioli, pork shank with polenta

and pork chops with sauerkraut, the food and service were incredible.

After another deep night’s sleep, we ventured on to the village of Badia and took a chairlift and a cable car up La Crusc/Santa Croce, a popular starting point for trekking and hiking. The vast hiking area around Alta Badia includes more than 400 km of wellsignposted hiking trails, but we opted for a leisurely 3-hour hike around the Armentara Meadows. We stopped for lunch at the La Crusc/Santa Croce mountain hut where sampled their speciality dish, Kaiserschmarren. Like a crepe but a little thicker and softer, Kaiserschmarren is cut up into pieces, covered with sugar and served with cranberry jam.

In the afternoon we headed back to the sanctuary of the hotel spa to enjoy an individually tailored massage and the blissful outdoor wellness area. We then spent the final evening in the Restaurant Kolfuschgerhof where we enjoyed a romantic meal, followed by after-dinner cocktails sat by the roaring fire in the Bistrot lounge bar.

Personal Note

Having been fortunate enough to have visited Alta Badia to ski in winter, I was excited to see what autumn had to offer. With the seasonal change in colours, the landscapes were fascinating, and in my view, more beautiful. There is so much to experience in Alta Badia, whether you are seeking action-packed adventure, relaxation, or both, Alta Badia has the perfect combination, making it an ideal getaway. So, whilst the days are still long enough, the climate is pleasant, and the atmosphere is calm and peaceful, an autumnal visit is highly recommended. Each autumn, Alta Badia’s lifts stay open until early October (this year until 6 October 2024) altabadia.org kolfuschgerhof.com

Relax into a soothing couple’s massage session at the resort’s tranquil spa which offers a selection of wellness treatments and includes Turkish and steam baths for the ultimate pampering.

My Experience

The Ixian Grand & All Suites really has it all for anyone looking for an adults only holiday within a short flight time from the UK. There are two areas of the resort; the main pool and the beach area where the majority of guests spend their time. Full of energy throughout the day and night, the beach area also hosted the the top quality entertainment.

We were allocated a corner suite with a private rooftop pool which allowed us to enjoy the atmosphere from the beach and the main pool whilst enjoying the privacy of just us in our own little oasis.

As with the rooms, the whole of the hotel accommodates for everyone, if you would like a small bite to eat there are Gyros’s available at the pool snack bar, Alazonia restaurant offers more of a fine dining Mediterranean dishes with gorgeous views across the ocean (this was our favourite) and a magnificent Japanese restaurant with some of the best sushi we have tasted.

For the ultimate romantic holiday, I’d recommend couples stay in the Beachfront Swim Up Sea View Suites, located directly on the waterfront, that comes with a wooden deck and sun beds. Guests staying in these suites will also be entitled to an a la carte lunch at Milonges, where you can sample the finest of Greek Cuisine, followed by dinner at the Alazonia restaurant.

The team, food and drink, rooms, spa, atmosphere and just the overall experience was so good we booked an extra three nights and new flights. which says it all. We will be sure to book in another visit very soon. theixiangrand.gr

Lovers of compact luxury saloons rejoice, for there is a new Audi A4. Except it isn’t called the Audi A4, it’s called the Audi A5. Sound familiar? That’s because the Audi A5 is currently a coupe version of the A4, but that’s all about to change. The new A5 will be a like-for-like swap for the A4, complete with saloon and estate versions, as well as sportier S5 models with a bit of extra power. And that’s petrol power, too, with new and more ef cient engines going in place of electric motors. The most powerful will be the S5 with its 362bhp 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine and all-wheel drive, although an RS version with even more power may be on the cards later. As usual with Audi, it’s a confusing number jumble, but the end product will likely be remarkable. audi.co.uk

NEED FOR SPEED

Bentley has killed off its legendary W12 engines, and has instead turned to hybrid power in the new Continental GT Speed.

Car manufacturers the world over are having to come to terms with a rapidly changing climate and the resulting changes to automotive legislation. Crewe-based Bentley has been ahead of the curve in many ways, having already introduced hybrid versions of the Flying Spur and Bentayga models, as well as making the factory carbon-neutral in 2019.

But now the time has come for things to get serious, and that means Bentley’s venerable twin-turbocharged, 6.0-litre W12 petrol engine has had to go. But that has left a gap in Bentley’s range, with no engine available to power the agship Speed models, including the new Continental GT Speed. So Bentley simply took its 4.0-litre V8 engine, used to such great effect in the Continental GT S and the Bentayga S, then installed it in a plug-in hybrid system with an electric motor for extra oomph.

Of course, the blurb says this is more ef cient – the new Continental GT Speed will cover 50 miles without using a drop of petrol – but performance is the name of the game. Because when you combine the V8 engine and the electric motor, you get a combined power output of 771bhp. That’s a gargantuan amount, and it takes the car from 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds and on to a 208mph top speed. That’s unbelievable performance, especially for a car that emits just 29g of carbon dioxide per kilometre on the of cial economy test. In contrast, the old GT Speed pumped out more than 300g per kilometre. The idea is that you smile, and the planet breathes a sigh of relief. Bentley Continental GT Speed, £TBC, bentleymotors.com

PRO PLUS

Just when you thought the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 didn’t need any more power, AMG has gone and added a new, even more potent version to the range. It’s called the GT 63 Pro and it has about 27bhp more power than the standard GT 63, for a total of 604bhp. That’s a lot, but the real increase in performance comes not from the 4.0-litre V8 under the bonnet, but from the aerodynamic tweaks to the bodywork, sportier tyres and enhanced cooling, all of which is supposed to make the car faster on a race track. But statistics are still crucial, and the GT 63 Pro has those in abundance. Getting from 0-62mph takes just 3.2 seconds and the top speed is 197mph, but Mercedes-AMG reckons you’ll really see the difference on a circuit. It’s shaping up to be a remarkable thing.

THE GENESIS OF SOMETHING AMAZING

Genesis is still a bit of a newbie in the new car market, but it has already impressed with some brilliant products, including the electric GV60 SUV. But for all its luxury and craftsmanship, the Genesis range hasn’t really felt very sporty. Until now. The GV60 is the rst in a line of Genesis products to get a high-performance Magma variant, which will go into production late next year. Much more aggressive (and much more orange), it’s set to rival the fastest Tesla Model Y and other go-faster electric vehicles. Performance gures are as yet unknown, but we saw it beat the brilliant Porsche Taycan in a hillclimb at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this summer, so we know it’s going to be immensely quick.

BEAUTIFUL Blasphemy

Putting hybrid power in the Porsche 911 was always going to rouse the rabble, but in the 911 Targa 4 GTS, writes James Fossdyke , Porsche has got it absolutely spot on

To the many, the Porsche 911 is a bit unimaginative, but there are those for whom the 911 is some kind of sacred cow with which nothing else can compete. These people are not like you and me. They have elevated the car they adore to a kind of mythological status, and they get deeply upset if someone — even if that someone works for Porsche — dares to modify the story.

It’s these people who became very agitated when Porsche announced it would offer the new 911 with a hybrid powertrain. It’s called the T-Hybrid system and it’s designed to make the new sports car more powerful without making it any more polluting. It sounds like a good idea, right? But the baying mob thought differently, and some of the online abuse aimed at Porsche was, to put it mildly, vitriolic. And we should know, because Porsche showed us some of it.

What’s really ridiculous is that though Porsche will happily sell you a 911 T-Hybrid, it will be equally delighted to sell you a petrol-powered version of the new 911. In fact, most versions of the new model will not have any kind of hybrid system whatsoever. So far, the sole T-Hybrid-equipped cars are the mid-range GTS models, which are the slightly sporty versions designed predominantly for road use, but aimed at those who’ll occasionally take their car on a track day.

Despite the plainly insane abuse, Porsche has the kind of easy con dence with which it can brush off this sort of thing. This is a company that knows what it’s doing, trusts its engineers and is very happy to back them to the hilt. And it’s happy to let the new 911 GTS models do their talking on the road and on the race track.

In fairness to Porsche, if you forget about the hybrid system for a moment, the new 911 GTS models haven’t deviated too far from the recipe that has made them so popular over the years. As before, they’re available in Coupe, Cabriolet and Targa forms, and it’s the latter tested here. With the glasshouse at the rear, the big roll hoop and a retractable fabric panel between the aforementioned hoop and the windscreen, it’s something of a halfway house between the Coupe and Cabriolet.

All three versions look a bit sportier than the standard 911 Carrera models, thanks to black trim all around the windows and black lettering on the badges, as well as dark alloy wheels and different bumpers. At the front, that means the 911 GTS gets these funny gill things, which aren’t especially attractive, but they work as an aerodynamic aid, automatically moving to reduce drag or improve cooling, depending on the car’s needs.

Inside, the cabin is available with all manner of options, but the standard GTS gets Race-Tex micro bre that’s inspired by racing car interiors, and there’s black trim everywhere. It also gets a new digital instrument display, which is an improvement on the old system because you can actually see it. The old 911’s instrument cluster was mostly hidden behind the steering wheel, and that’s not an issue with the new one.

The GTS models’ attitudes are the same, too, with a focus on sporty driving on the road and on the circuit. As if attempting the impossible, Porsche has tried to make the GTS variants handle even better than the standard 911 Carrera models, which were already pretty magical. They’re nely honed and beautifully balanced, and they go like droppings off a digging implement. So Porsche set to work making the GTS cars sharper, with modi ed suspension that makes them feel sharper in corners, and four-wheel steering to make them turn more tightly at low speed and become more stable at high speeds.

But the big difference is the T-Hybrid system, for which Porsche has copped so much ak. But despite the name, this isn’t a hybrid system like the one in a Toyota, or even in a Porsche Cayenne. There’s no plugging it in, there’s no driving short distances on electricity alone, and there’s no massive improvement in fuel economy. This is all about power and performance, and it delivers in spades. In essence, the hybrid system comprises ve basic components. One is a 41kW electric motor, and that lives inside the second component, an eight-speed automatic gearbox. There’s also a battery to power the motor, and there’s a petrol engine. But not just any petrol engine. It’s a 3.6-litre at-six, and that’s assisted by the fth and nal component: a whopping great electrically assisted turbocharger.

whenever you go near the throttle, and then snorting like an angry badger whenever you back off. And it’s especially brutal – and therefore brilliant – when you put the exhaust in its sportiest setting. You’d never guess it was a hybrid.

That means the engine isn’t just being aided by the electric motor, but by a turbocharger that uses electricity to spool up more quickly, effectively making it more responsive. The result is a total of 534bhp, which is a huge amount by almost anyone’s standards.

In the case of the Targa 4 GTS we tested, the power is split between all four of its massive wheels, and there’s clever software to help the car make best use of that power. And it allows the car to get from 0-62mph in 3.1 seconds, before it roars onto a 194mph top speed. And it’s the slowest GTS model of them all. With less complex roof systems, the Coupe and Cabriolet models are much lighter than the Targa, so they’ll manage the 0-62mph dash in three seconds at.

But as well as offering immense power and pretty sensational handling (seriously, the steering is outrageously good), all three GTS models also share an awesome and animalistic soundtrack. The noise is biblical, assaulting your eardrums with the roar of exploding petrol

The open-top Cabriolet and Targa models only put you closer to the action, but strangely, that isn’t the reason why I think the Targa – the slowest of the GTS models – is the best. No, it’s because of a strange quirk of engineering.

You see, the GTS Coupe and Cabriolet’s sit 10mm lower than those of the standard 911 models, in a move designed to improve handling, but that makes them both quite stiff. Yet the Targa sits at the same height as the basic Carreras, so while you might notice a fraction more lean in corners on a race track, you’re much more likely to notice a signi cant improvement in comfort on the road.

Combine that with the looks, the ability to open the roof and the sound and performance of that engine, and you’ve got something wonderful. It’s fast, fun and more practical than you expect, so forget all the stuff about this being the rst hybrid 911. This is one of the best 911s yet, and that’s all you need to know.

Volvo’s newest and smallest SUV is incredibly clever, but James Fossdyke can’t help wondering whether Volvo has broken new ground or taken it a step too far

At risk of stating the obvious, safety is enormously important, and never more so than in transport. Cars must be crash tested, airliners must have safety cards in the seat pockets and train drivers must be wide awake. These are the non-negotiables that have become critical in our lives, yet we take them for granted. Every day, we get into cars, trains, buses and planes trusting that we’re going to be safe because all these lessons have been learned the hard way long ago. And maybe we’ve become a bit complacent.

Take Volvo, which can surely be counted among the keenest students at the school of automotive safety. Here’s a brand that sold the first car with three-point seatbelts and the first car with blind-spot monitoring, which tells you if a car is lurking in that hard-to-see spot over your shoulder. In short, this is a company that takes safety seriously, and that’s reflected in its crash test results. Five-star ratings are more or less a given from Volvo.

So we expect Volvos to be a beacon of occupant protection, and on paper, the new EX30 is another instalment in Volvo’s saga of safety. It’s a compact electric SUV, designed to sit beneath the XC40 (and its electric EX40 derivative) in Volvo’s range, competing with the likes of the Lexus UX and the Mercedes-Benz EQA. You can put the new electric Mini Countryman in that space, too.

In short, it’s a small family car, and as such, you expect it to be safe for small families. And according to the statistics, that’s exactly what it is. A five-star crash test rating, a ridiculous suite of safety systems and the option of high-visibility Moss Yellow paintwork should all make this about as safe as

electric cars get. But there’s a potential issue, and it comes courtesy of the designers.

You see, Volvo also wanted to make the EX30 cool, calm and unmistakably Scandinavian, stripping out all the usual banality of a family car to make room for relaxing Scandi style. Which is why there’s no ignition button, no gear lever and no instrument display. Instead, there’s a steering wheel with a few meaningless pictograms, a steering column stalk given over to gear selection and a massive central touchscreen. Even the key is just a blank lump of plastic devoid of buttons. If you want the car to open, just walk up to it.

All this means the EX30’s cabin is definitely cool, clean and sustainable. With recycled materials in the dash and seats and fewer features than an OS map of the Sahara, it’s definitely minimalist. Almost to the point that it couldn’t really come from anywhere other than Scandinavia.

The only real thing that punctuates the cabin is the massive central touchscreen, which controls absolutely everything. And when I say everything, I mean it. As well as all the navigation and media stuff, it’s used to change the angle of the door mirrors, and to open the boot. Lights, cruise control functions and vehicle modes can all be accessed through that screen.

Which sounds really cool and high-tech, particularly when you learn the system uses Android technology to behave just like a phone. It even has Google Maps in place of satellite navigation, which is useful because the car will tell you whether you need to charge on your route, and it’ll tell you where you might find a charging point if so. It’ll even tell you whether the charger you want is available or in use.

That’s all good stuff, but it means you spend an awful lot of time looking at the touchscreen, rather than looking out of the window. And that’s only exacerbated by the fact there’s no speedo, so you have to turn to that central screen if you want to know whether Officer Dibble will want a word with you. So it feels as though you have a choice. You can watch your speed religiously and rear-end anything in your way, or avoid crashing but pick up points for speeding.

Obviously, that’s hyperbole, but Volvo is clearly aware of the problem, because in a bid to avoid

needs anything as fast as the twin-motor Performance model I tested. More than 420bhp in a family SUV is completely pointless, and the ability to outrun the Range Rover Sport SV we tested the other day in a 0-62mph sprint is absolutely ludicrous.

such issues, Volvo has fitted a camera in the steering wheel that monitors your behaviour and tells you when you have spent too long looking at the screen that Volvo itself installed. And it does so quite angrily. It also warns you if you look out of the driver’s-side window for too long, including when you’re checking a junction for oncoming traffic.

What’s more, it’ll warn you if you dare to exceed the speed limit by as much as 1mph. Or, more accurately, if you exceed whatever the car thinks the speed limit might be by as much as 1mph. The tech doesn’t always know what the speed limit really is, and as any harshly treated schoolchild will tell you, it’s unbelievably annoying to be given detention when you’ve done nothing wrong (no, Mr Snowden, I haven’t forgiven you). So you turn the system off to avoid the angry bonging and 10 minutes later you get done for speeding. Again.

The questions surrounding the technology are a shame, because the EX30 is a good car. Yes, the ride on 20-inch alloy wheels is a little fi rm and nobody

Yet despite that, it still covers well over 200 miles on a charge and you can refi ll the battery from 10% to 80% in less than half an hour, provided you can fi nd a suitable charging point. Charging overnight using a home charging unit should be doable, too. Admittedly, space in the back is a bit limited and the styling won’t suit everyone, but the boot is just about big enough and I quite like the design –particularly when it’s paired with a bold colour such as Moss Yellow. I like the interior design, too, even if I’m not sold on some of the recycled materials.

But with the EX30, it feels as though we’ve jumped the shark in terms of technology. Other brands, including the mighty Volkswagen, are rowing back on their plans to eliminate switchgear from vehicle cabins, partly on safety grounds. If Volvo did the same, the EX30 would be one of the best electric SUVs on the market, but as it is, it’s a tricky thing to recommend to anyone who doesn’t subscribe to Stuff or T3

W hy Black is t h is Seas o n’s Most Popular Colour

Tash Bradley, Director of Interior Design and Colour Psychologist at Lick, shares her advice on why black is trending right now and how to decorate with this classic colour:

Goodbye Brat Green Summer - home decor is taking a darker turn for Autumn/Winter, with Lick reporting a huge 340% uplift in sales of black paint*.

“In the world of interiors, many view black as a colour that requires a level of bravery and boldness to decorate with, but this is changing. Whether used as a dominant colour on your walls or as an accent colour on your woodwork, black is the perfect choice for creating elegant and timeless spaces and it’s clear that decorators are opening up to the potential and versatility of this colour within their homes. This sophisticated colour creates inviting, intimate spaces with a strong design identity.”

“As the summer holidays wind down at the end of August and we begin to transition into the cooler months, dark hues are the perfect go-to colours for decorating - and what colour can be darker than black? A classic matt black absorbs all natural light, so if you’ve got a room that lacks sunlight, such as a bedroom or small space, lean into that by colour drenching your space with black to create a calming and cocooning effect. This is especially important as the nights draw in and we start losing access to natural light, making a strong case for embracing your cosy corners and opting for darker colours.”

“Black colours with warm, red undertones, such as Lick Black 02, exude elegance, creating spaces that feel empowering and decadent, perfect for a dining room and spaces where you plan to entertain guests. Black 02 has a timeless appeal and a comforting quality which will effortlessly transition your space into the autumn. Another velvety black I recommend is Lick Black 01, which is a bold, graphite black, with

blue undertones which will inject energy into your space during the sluggish winter months. Lick’s M·A·C Black 40 is the colour that everyone can have in their homes. It’s a rich, true matt hue which is so versatile. This elegant and empowering black pairs seamlessly with Lick White 02 for a high-contrast monochromatic look or Lick White 05 for a softer, neutral scheme.”

TASH’S TOP METHODS TO INCLUDE BLACK IN YOUR INTERIORS:

• Accent colour: “Every room can benefit from an accent of black to bring contrast and depth. The best way to do this is to use black to accentuate a feature, such as a staircase or fireplace, to draw your attention to the architectural highlights of your home.”

• 50/50 decorating: “This monochrome effect will help to trick the eye and open up your space, especially if you use black on the bottom 50% of the room and a light neutral on the top 50%. The key thing to remember is to ensure everything in that lower 50% should also be black, including radiators and skirting boards.”

• Colour drenching: “Colour drenching with black will help to create a very calm environment. If you have a small, north-facing room, this is a great option as black will absorb the shadows, blur the edges of the space and wrap around you like one big hug.”

• Pattern play: “Black pairs with every other colour, so you can have a bit of fun with it. Pattern play helps to open up a room and vertical stripes will elongate your space. Whatever your style, black is a truly versatile colour with lots of potential for creativity.”

A recent investigation looking closely at consumer attitudes towards greener homes discovered that one in five homeowners are planning to improve the sustainability of their property in the next 12 months.

To support those who are keen to make more eco-conscious decisions about their home, leading steel window and door manufacturer Crittall Windows is exploring which home improvement products can make a significant difference to the overall energy efficiency of a property.

Russell Ager, MD of Crittall Windows, comments: “As a company which has been investing heavily in reducing our own carbon emissions, it’s fantastic to see that homeowners are also looking to make some positive changes with their property.

“However, knowing where to start can feel daunting, especially with so many eco-friendly home improvement products on the market. While many people may think solar panels and heat pumps are the best solution, updating your windows and doors with high quality, sustainable replacements can lead to some impressive results.”

As the focal point of a property, windows and doors don’t just impact the overall look and value of a home, but they also play a significant role in its energy efficiency, as Russell explains.

“How well a window or door performs is incredibly important as this will indicate if it can successfully retain heat within a home. We’d always recommend looking closely at the DSER and WER ratings of a window and door before deciding because this measurement considers everything from the air infiltration to solar gain. Ultimately, any window or door with a rating of A++ will be the most efficient and lead to the best improvements.”

COST OF WORK REQUIRED IS TOO EXPENSIVE

Although the research highlights that the second most popular green lifestyle choice for homeowners involves minimising energy use, the same investigation also found people believe the costs of the work required is too high – preventing them from investing.

“Making changes to your home is an expensive process so always consider the lifetime cost and potential savings you’ll see

over the years before making a final decision,” highlights Russell.

“While steel windows and doors are more expensive than alternative materials, they are more durable and last in excess of 60 years. What’s more with a reduced likeliness of replacements and repairs, the long term cost of steel is actually incredibly competitive.”

Another factor which contributes to the long-term value of steel windows are their impressive sustainability credentials as Russell explains.

“At Crittall Windows, all of our steel profiles are made from 100% recycled source and they can be recycled at end of life. This makes them a worthwhile investment for eco-conscious homeowners looking for an aesthetically pleasing and long lasting solution.”

MODERN WINDOWS AND DOORS FOR UK HOMES

With a passion to manufacture high quality products, Crittall Windows is continuously evolving its product range. In fact, the team has just released a brand new steel system which delivers outstanding thermal performance, positively contributing to a home’s efficiency credentials.

“Thanks to incredible advances in manufacturing processes, modern steel windows and doors are a fantastic thermally enhanced, energy efficient solution for UK homes,” adds Russell.

“Our latest product, Corporate W20 TE®, has been specially designed to improve the energy efficiency of a property, without compromising on the slim sightlines synonymous with our steel windows and doors. With UW & UD values of 1.4 W/m²K, homeowners will be investing in home improvement products which flood their home with natural light and perform to the highest standard.

“Plus, as a highly recyclable material, homeowners can feel confident they’re making a responsible home improvement choice by choosing to install steel windows and doors in their property.” If you’re looking for ways to boost your home’s energy efficiency, why not consider those that offer timeless style and lasting value? The Secret to a Restful Night’s Sleep

Getting a good night’s sleep is essential for mental and physical wellbeing. From relaxing treatments to new bedding, here are our best sleep cures.

Mark Tremlett, Founder of Naturalmat, the award-winning maker of natural and organic mattresses and beds comments on the ways you can improve your sleep

“It’s estimated that we spend as much as onethird of our lifetime sleeping, or at least trying to, so it is important that your sleep environment is as comfortable as possible and working hard for you.

Firstly, consider the age and quality of your mattress. It is recommended that we should change mattress every eight years, especially if it’s no longer comfortable or has lost shape, but the choices can be a little overwhelming when choosing a new one. We think that there is no better way to know what is best for you than spending a good amount of time trying a mattress, which is why we have designed and built our biggest ever Sleep Zone in our Knutsford showroom. We created our Sleep Zone to allow customers to physically test mattresses in a specially designed space that is conducive to optimal sleep, including dim lighting, our bespoke aroma and a calming soundtrack of the migrating bird on the banks of the River Exe next to our workshop.

Secondly, I can’t stress enough the significance of investing in a mattress that is made from natural, breathable fibres. These materials respond better to the body’s natural temperature changes, ensuring a cooler sleep environment and longer-lasting comfort compared to synthetic alternatives. Additionally, consider mattress toppers made from natural fibres as a budget-friendly option to enhance comfort.

Regarding sleep hygiene and routine, we recommend avoiding overstimulating activities like watching TV, working out or working in bed up to one hour before sleep to strengthen your brain’s association between the bedroom and sleep. If you are thinking about redecorating, then choosing a soothing colour palette for the bedroom and a design that is clutter-free, along with natural-fibre bedding such as linen or hemp, which aids in temperature regulation during sleep, all help to create a serene sleep enhancing ambiance.

Natural bedding is incredibly effective at regulating your body temperature whilst sleeping. Natural fibres, like organic wool, linen and hemp far surpass synthetics in breathability and comfort. While weighted blankets and heated options offer temporary relaxation, natural materials support your body’s innate thermoregulation, which is crucial for deep sleep.

To optimise sleep quality and improve overall wellbeing, prioritise natural, breathable materials in your mattresses, bedding, and bedroom decor. By focusing on environmental sustainability and personal comfort, you are guaranteed a rejuvenating sleep experience.”

11 QUEEN STREET UPPINGHAM

A METICULOUSLY REFURBISHED FOUR BEDROOM PERIOD TOWN COTTAGE IN THE CENTRE OF UPPINGHAM GUIDE PRICE

£625,000

The most enchanting, four bedroom house in the centre of Uppingham has a very unassuming façade belying the little piece of heaven behind. A meticulously considered refurbishment has been carried out under the eye of the artist owner whose restful palette and exquisite taste has resulted in an immaculate, top quality home.

Originally three small cottages and probably built circa 1725, the interior is quirky and charming with the property having a flying freehold meaning the downstairs is larger than up. The extended ground floor offers a lovely connection with the walled garden, which offers a wonderful private sanctuary at the back and completes this highly

desirable residence.

Inside, the property is the perfect blend of old and new. Modern double-glazing ensures a warm, quiet and comfortable home which provides a drawing room with an open fire, a snug or study off the entrance hall, both front rooms having their original floorboards, and at the back overlooking the garden, a very generous open plan space for dining. Here, a log-burning stove sits in a large rustic-style fireplace, and an expansive solid

oak floor continues onto a slightly higher level in the kitchen area.

Upstairs, there are four bedrooms. The principal one has a practical yet attractive en suite shower, so too the family bathroom which contains a fitted bath with a shower over.

The enclosed rear garden is sheer delight; a contained, sheltered space with a micro-climate which has been landscaped by the current owner with great panache. A fiery crimson Japanese acer is a fabulous central focal point near steps leading up to a lawn with a brick paved patio; a number of evergreens provide structure throughout the winter and flagstones near the house create a generous area for al fresco dining. A timber shed allows for garden storage and solid hardwood double gates from a gravelled area give useful shared access from the front. fineandcountry.com

EAST NORTON HALL

LODDINGTON LANE, EAST NORTON, LEICESTERSHIRE

A METICULOUSLY REFURBISHED FOUR BEDROOM PERIOD TOWN COTTAGE IN THE CENTRE OF UPPINGHAM GUIDE PRICE £3,500,000

Enter into the realms of make-believe as you approach this beautiful stone mansion with lofty gables and towering chimneys, set in around five acres of parkland studded with majestic mature trees such as the Cedar of Lebanon gracing the southeast lawn, with adjoining pastures of around ten acres for those with a love of horses or indeed any livestock. In a private and slightly elevated position, views over the surrounding countryside are enchanting whilst the interior is exquisitely decorated in the utmost good taste to complement this extraordinarily fine home of impressive proportions. Under a mile away from Rutland,

as far as the crow flies, it lies off the A47 Uppingham to Leicester road and is less than a ten minute drive into Uppingham, less than half an hour into the centre of Leicester to the west, and similarly to Market Harborough to the south and Stamford to the northeast.

Downstairs, there are no less than eight reception rooms, many extremely commodious, three of which are dual aspect, four with large bay windows plus a beautifully fitted, over forty-three foot kitchen living room with French doors onto the

garden, that leads into a vast pantry and on into a boot room and a utility room, a back door beyond. The principal rooms lend a sense of restrained grandeur with their prominent fireplaces and magnificent high ceilings - the reception hall with a grid of elegant timbers, and the drawing room bearing exquisite geometric plasterwork. Further rooms include a sitting room, a billiard or games room complete with built-in bar, a formal dining room and an unusual second sitting room with its chamfered, internal arches that create a cloister-like feel. There are four entrance halls: the main reception hall in the centre and three side halls, one beside the arches. Four sets of stairs are within the main house, the two principal ones rising from within the three-storey part of the property. Other rooms downstairs include a playroom and an office, and an extensive cellar of over fifteen hundred square feet accessed by two separate staircases providing plenty of storage for wine connoisseurs.

On the first floor, there are seven bedrooms, five en suite and two with dressing rooms, two separate bathrooms, plus two sitting rooms and two kitchens, the latter few rooms together forming self-contained one bedroom apartments each with their own staircases. These are linked by doors along a landing creating much versatility; for instance, they could combine to become a very spacious two bedroom apartment. Another door connects with the main part of the house, again allowing great flexibility.

In the main part of the house, five more bedrooms on the attic floor are served by a large family bathroom, making a total of twelve bedrooms in the main house. In addition, a self-contained, one bedroom, first floor apartment is above the stable and garage block adjacent to a number of storerooms on the other side of the courtyard to the rear of the building. fineandcountry.com

GUIDE PRICE £1,600,000

Completed in 2021, the property was meticulously transformed from a collection of original farm buildings into a luxurious and light-filled residence. With the attention to detail abundant no matter where you cast your eye, this home truly is a rare treasure in today’s market.

Inside, the sitting room, with its galleried landing and exquisite

vaulted ceiling complete with exposed beams, and a feature Charnwood air log burner is both grand and cozy, perfect for the oncoming autumnal and winter evenings. But the room is bathed in natural light, thanks to large windows that overlook the gardens, making it a pleasant space to relax within any time of the year.

The remarkable open-plan kitchen, dining, and sitting area is the beating heart of the home, creating a fantastic space for family gatherings and entertaining guests. It truly is a chef ’s dream come true, featuring a Nickleby Hepplewhite kitchen and

utility room units, all hand-painted in Farrow & Ball’s Stiffkey Blue with Jazz hand chrome handles. The kitchen also boasts a Steel Enfasi range cooker with an induction hob. The work surface, a neolithic Silestone in Classic Calacatta with a suede finish, adds a touch of luxury, while the Franke sink and

mixer tap complete the high-end specification. The kitchen’s layout is not only beautiful but highly functional, offering ample storage and workspace for culinary endeavours. Complementing the kitchen area is a separate dining room, which offers wonderful views of the courtyard and garden, making it an ideal setting for more formal occasions.

The master bedroom is another highlight of the home, boasting a spacious en suite with a double wash unit, shower, and bath. Although the house features five bedrooms and as many bathrooms, the owners have converted what was originally designated as a sixth bedroom into a stylish walk-in dressing room, which could easily be reverted if desired. A large study with garden views on two sides offers additional flexibility as a potential family room or playroom, depending on the new owners’ needs.

One of the property’s standout features is the courtyard, an addition by the current owners that further enhances the outdoor living experience and provide ample space to enjoy the magnificent views.

Originally planned as part of the rear lawn, the courtyard was thoughtfully designed as a summer retreat, complete with inset borders, shrubs, flowers, and spotlights that create a magical ambiance at night. This space has become a favourite spot for the owners, providing a perfect setting for outdoor dining and relaxation with its stylish patio terrace. The gardens, both front and rear, have been meticulously landscaped, with a large area dedicated to roses and lavenders.

But what truly sets this property apart is its south-facing position, offering excellent natural light throughout the house. The glazed French doors that run along the lounge, dining, and kitchen rooms flood the space with light, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. The rear views are nothing short of spectacular, offering a picturesque backdrop to daily life.

The outdoor lifestyle is further enhanced by private gardens that aren’t overlooked, offering a sense of seclusion while still being part of a small, friendly community. The property, part of a group of four barn conversions, has its own private driveway, ensuring privacy and security.

The location is ideal with Stamford only ten minutes away, and Oundle

and Uppingham within a fifteenminute drive. The nearby Rutland Water offers beautiful walking routes, perfect for those who enjoy outdoor activities.
