WELCOME Welcome to adult learning at Little Angel Theatre. Throughout the year we offer a range of training for professionals at different levels in their career development. Some courses require existing puppetry skills, some are open to beginners and those working in associated creative industries, including theatre, animation and film. Our training opportunities can also be useful for teachers, workshop leaders, support workers and therapists. This season we are pleased to welcome back Mark Makin with his unique course, Tour Booking – the essential guide. AN INTRODUCTION TO PERFORMING LIVE ANIMATION WITH THE PAPER CINEMA Little Angel Theatre in association with London International Mime Festival Learn the basics of designing puppets, narrative and storyboarding, puppet manipulation and performance. Make your own piece in groups during the session. For anyone interested in learning more about this unique approach to making and performing live animation. All levels of experience welcome. STORYTELLING AND PUPPETRY CPD session for Teachers, Therapist and Early Years Practitioners Explore storytelling and story making with puppets. You will begin by making a simple puppet out of fabric as well as methods for making the design with children. You will learn to bring it to life and look at ideas for using puppets with children to help them explore characters and stories. Suitable for anyone who works with children or young people. An evening exploring the creative process of making theatre with puppetry. This event is for puppetry practitioners and writers or dramaturges. There will be an opportunity to engage in some practical work and to network with other professionals from the field of puppetry, visual theatre, writing and dramaturgy. “A puppet is an object which through design and/or movement presents itself as a character.” You will weave together the strands of animation and fabrication, using the intimate/expressive relationship between our own bodies and the expressive object/s as a framework. Mike Shepherd – founder and Artistic Director of Kneehigh, actor, director and teacher delivers a “Kneehigh Lowdown”a practical workshop exploring the ways Kneehigh work.

A masterclass for puppet makers and beginners. A hands on exploration of different kinds of joints and mechanisms, focusing on rod and table top puppets.

Mike directed the much acclaimed A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings, a co-production with Little Angel Theatre.

You will have a chance to look at the mechanisms that can transform a puppet so that its movements can be expressive and subtle and the manipulation easier to control.

A crash course for total beginners. Discover the essential skills needed to bring puppets and objects alive with movement and emotion. The session will include learning about puppet life, breath and focus. An entertaining and comprehensive introduction to the art of the puppeteer and a springboard to the world of professional development.

As well as much more this course will enable you to: • Organise a realistic tour schedule and budget • Present your company and shows to potential bookers in the best light • Understand the different financial and contractual deal options

MARIONETTE CARVING COURSE With John Roberts, PuppetCraft Theatre Learn marionette carving from this Master Puppeteer. You will design your own puppet and then cut out, carve, joint and assemble it. If there is time, you will make a control and string the puppet. You could aim to make a simple complete puppet (which is a lot to do within the week) or you can work at a more leisurely pace and do the finishing touches at a later date. AN INTRODUCTION TO MAKING AND PERFORMING WITH GLOVE AND HAND PUPPETS With Isobel Smith and Darren East Day 1 & 2: Create a glove puppet that looks great and is designed to perform effectively. Day 3: Learn skills to work with glove and hand puppets, as well as staging options, working with multiple puppets, working with your audience, working with your voice, and story and performance forms. PUPPET CONSTRUCTION COURSE: DOG PUPPET With Peter O'Rourke Learn how to build a simple, expressive mechanism into a simple sculpt. Working from a prototype, you will build your own puppet. Designed for a single operator with rods from above, the prototype will be a smaller than life-size dog, with some internal movement in the body and neck, a nodding head and a moving mouth.
