POTTING YARD
DESIGN CONCEPTUALISATION The brief invited a new development proposal in Singapore Botanic Gardens to upgrade the existing back-of-house operation site, the Potting Yard. The original structures was built 20 years ago and required full demolition and construction of 14 new structures.
PROJECT TIMELINE
PROJECT CHALLENGE The main challenge of the site is to remain in operation during the entire 10 months construction period, allowing staffs to enter and exit freely. The second challenge is due to the complexity of the site contour that would required sophisticated planning for water runoff, positioning for rain water harvesting tank and storm water detention tank. Next challenge is on the tree protection zone. There are total of 40 trees identified as protected/heritage trees. Zoning and protection must be incorporated throughout the project without encroachment.
drawing Potting Yard in the Singapore Botanic Gardens (SBG) serves as the back-of-house for the Gardens’ iconic landscape in supporting SBG’s daily horticultural and operational maintenance works. Potting Yard comprises of 12 building blocks: Admin Office, Tools
Shed, Buggy Station, Cooling Shed 1A, 1B & 2, Gardeners Shed, Existing Toilet Annex, Soil Mix Shed, Workshop, Nursery Shed A&B, and Nursery Shed C as shown below. All structures within Potting Yard were designed to be low-rise building to ensure
8
the structural integrity of not having a deep foundation that would endanger the existing soil condition. Furthermore, the structures’ maximum height permitted within the site was controlled to be no more than 7 meters, to avoid excessive sunlight obstruction.

COOLING SHEDS - A total number of 3 temperature-controlled glass houses will be erected, designed with energy efficient
double glazed low-E glass as the encasement on all sides to garner the sunlight and energy required for the plants within. The
temperature is maintained at 16-25 degree Celsius at all times. Additional shade will be provided to further reducing the heat gain.

FEASIBILITY STUDIES A new proposal of Singapore’s first proscenium thrust theatre, directed by Singapore renowned theatre company W!ldrice within the new mixed development of Funan, was originally a 2-storey high performance hall of 12 metres floor to floor height.
LONGITUDINAL SECTION
CROSS SECTION
Through a series of investigation, the theatre has been transformed from 2-tier balcony to a 3 storey performance space. A mezzanine level embedded in between 4th and 5th storey further enhanced the intimacy of the space. Situated within a shopping district, and inside
a shopping mall, the allocated leasing space were facing spatial and acoustic challenges. The east wall directly abutting North Bridge Road further amplifying the road noise into the theatre boundary, causing unpleasant noise into the performance space.

AXONOMETRIC VIEW
The brief called for a Theatre with strong identity and recognizability. The team explored the motif of ‘W’, the initial of W!ldrice, to accentuate the identity of the theatre. Herringbone pattern was discussed and introduced in the preliminary stage of design development.

KEEPERS A diamond box has been created for Singapore’s designers to showcase their work. Diamond symbolized the combination of beauty of all – the beauty of designs of Singapore’s creative culture. By showcasing the products of creativity in a diamond, one can associate the quality and delicacy of design industries. Keepers is situated besides one of the busiest cross junctions in orchard road, therefore high traffic density, both pedestrian and vehicular, can be utilized by tilting the façade to provide more viewing experiences. To further emphasize on the ‘diamond’, the ‘L’ block is painted in white, contrasting with the black diamond. Black diamond is very
attractive due to its color, and due to its rarity, it has becomes extremely precious element. KEEPERS, as the name suggested, have triggered a group of designer that believed in the value in design: continue to inherit the value of design and to appreciate our designers’ valuable works in Singapore. KEEPERS constituted of two volumes: a ‘diamond’ and an ‘L’ block. The ‘L’ block is slightly higher than the ‘diamond’, doubled volume space that is able to be transformed into semi-outdoor spaces for interactive design activities such as designer workshop and tutorials. The café is laid-out just beside SVC to encourage interaction and spillage of visitors

during the opening hours. The ‘diamond’ that faced towards the junction between Cairnhill and Orchard road is designed as a visual merchandising frontal façade to attract both pedestrian and drivers attention.

SGIO
A travelling showcase of Singapore’s contemporary creative talents, Singapore: Inside Out travelled to Beijing, London, New York and back to Singapore in 2015 as a celebration of Singapore’s Golden Jubilee. Helmed by the Singapore Tourism Board, The design of the pavilion incorporated modular elements that could be easily dissembled and reassembled as the showcase travelled around the world, and included several rooms for artists to display their works, a black box, a library, two stages and courtyard spaces for visitors to explore the breadth and depth of Singapore’s creative scene. The artists on show spanned multiple disciplines, from the performing, visual, literary and culinary arts to music, installation art and fashion.
