DESIGN PRACTICE 2
END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION NAME Olivia Chapman
1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them? Throughout both sections of this module i have gained many skills , especially when working with type. As i am an image based designer , type has never really interested me, but when working collaboratively with Kirsty (a type based student), i have realised its importance and how easily mistakes are made within type which could potentially effect your work as a whole. Things like kerning , size and layout of the fonts are things that i am now so much more aware of. Another skill which i have developed is to book bind. I have produced small books before but during this module i binded and covered a thick durable book which i am currently using as a note book. I have also become a master in mocking thing up within photoshop, throughout this module i had to propose a lot of design ideas due to time and funding, so this meant i had to create mocks ups of these ideas, i really enjoyed doing this as it gives you a chance to see your work in action and how effective it would be and look in a real situation or environment.
2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process? The greatest approach to my brief has been a skill that i have learnt which has definitely benefited me as a designer when idea generating and creating a flow in my work is analysing a brief. We had lots of workshops and sessions with Lorrane and Fred on how to fully analyse the brief and create a rationale. I have found that this process of repeating the same questions to yourself and answering them referring to the brief has improved the final outcome of my work. I have also used IN DESIGN a lot more throughout this project. I now use ID for creating my presentation and crit boards, i can easily use this software now and find that it makes work so much more precise and clean cut in terms of layout and scaling images/type.
3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these? The strengths within my work throughout both projects i feel is a greater understanding of the design process , writing rationals, thoroughly analysing the brief and gathering appropriate research has definitely made my work have a purpose which in turn create better context when writing up and evaluating my work. The story of my work shown on my board is clear and feel my photographic skills make the boards themselves. Mocking up posters, products and branding effectively so that i can take a look at my ideas in action.
4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?
Id say blogging and evaluating the process of my work has lacked, i need to blog as i go along not not leave it to build up. Colour considerations could have been more apparent, thinking deeper into the design context. I feel More through research could have made my design decisions better. I need to follow through with my design ideas and proposals, this means spending more time in college and using its facilities, screen printing etc.
5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
1- don't leave the boring things until the last minute - write more todo lists 2- Spend more time in college and use its facilities - Work always looks better when effort and time is put into the printing and making 3-Think deeper into the context - creates better outcomes 4Consider type - spend more time and care when using typefaces 5-Make more informed design decisions and MAKE NOTE OF THEM!
6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas: (please indicate using an ‘x’) 5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor 1 2 3 4 Attendance X Punctuality X Motivation X Commitment X Quantity of X work produced Quality of X work produced Contribution to the group

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.
