Growing Celina

hen innovative businessman J. Fred Smith designed a plan in 1910 for a downtown shopping area in Celina, he was envisioning the future. Influenced by the “City Beautiful” movement, Smith acquired land, laid out a “Public Square,” built brick buildings and in eight months opened Celina’s first open air mall. Through Smith’s efforts, Celina soon had an electric plant, concrete sidewalks, water and sewage systems, a city park, lake and other improvements.

Smith’s design helped create a sense of community in Celina, explains Carolyn Harvey, board member for the Celina Heritage Museum. “Farmers and craftspeople brought whatever their talents and products were to the Square: produce, animals, pelts, bonnets, guns. Anything they could barter or sell. Smith’s innovative Public Square was designed to help people ‘cross-connect.’ Encouraging shopping, visiting and relationship-building.” More than 100 years later, leaders of the Celina Newcomers & Friends were discussing ways to celebrate their upcoming fifth anniversary. A diverse group of women from Celina and surrounding areas, the non-profit organization is dedicated to helping women make friends and feel connected in the community. Launched in 2009 by Sandy Carter, who’d returned to Celina after several years living overseas and was experiencing the challenges of living in a “new” community, the group is modeled after a similar newcomer organization Carter experienced in Italy. Michelle Garrett, Celina Newcomers & Friends’ treasurer, initiated the concept of Celina Newcomers hosting a community farmer’s market. “My dream is that we can provide local residents with opportunities to purchase locally grown produce and handmade products from local artisans. Farmers can educate consumers on the health benefits of buying fresh and nutritious ingredients and offer delicious and hopefully different ways to prepare these foods.”

In Fall 2013, Celina Newcomers & Friends began extensive research into the action steps necessary to bring a farmers market to the community. Spearheaded by president Rachel Baty, a core group invested hundreds of volunteer hours developing and implementing plans. “Our aim is to create a destination spot in Celina’s historic downtown square where community members, Celina Magazine

| June 2014

local farmers, producers, entertainers and artisans can come together,” Baty explains. “The Market will offer fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables raised by local farmers as well as specialties such as breads, honey, jams, herbs and cut flowers. Promoting foot traffic in the Historic Downtown Square, the Market will help give local merchants opportunities to strengthen their businesses while building ‘community’ as couples, families, and friends gather for a relaxing evening alternative to early morning marketing.” “Celina’s downtown historic square is the perfect place for a Farmer’s Market,” says Baty. “Celina Newcomers & Friends’ desire in being the organizer and market manager is to give community members an opportunity to buy from local farmers and local artisans, while listening to local musical talent and visiting with their neighbors.”

Friday Night Market on Celina’s Historic Square is a collaborative project led by Celina Newcomers & Friends in partnership with the City of Celina, Celina Main Street, Celina Garden Club and other community groups, organizations and individuals: “The City of Celina and Celina Main Street are supporting Celina Newcomer’s Friday Night Market for many reasons. The Friday Night Market will provide a wonderful place for residents to shop locally and support Celina merchants and artisans. Additionally, a market of this nature will give a wholesome family, couple, and friend-event for Friday night entertainment. “For more than 100 years, Celina Square has been the heartbeat of the community,” explains Harvey. “Smith would be pleased with what is being planned. A farmer’s market puts a little magic in the air; maybe because it’s a glimpse of our past. Buying locally benefits everyone in Celina. It keeps dollars in our community, we are supporting our local farmers, and you get to purchase the freshest produce. It’s a great experience for the whole family!” Little did Sandy Carter know when she initiated Celina Newcomers & Friends that under different leadership five years later an idea would spring forth from the group which would be a natural partnership for her family’s emerging organic farming business. Cartermere Farms, an original vendor partner for Celina’s Friday Night Market, began as a collaboration between Dallas chef Greg Bussey and Sandy’s husband Nelson Carter. The Bussey family had commissioned Carter to build a high-end chicken coop for their Dallas residence. While discussing the project, Bussey asked Carter where he could purchase local organic produce for his restaurants. Their resulting conversation sparked the idea for an experimental three-quarter-acre garden to see what could be grown at the Carter family farm and how restaurants might utilize the produce. The experiment was a success. Just 18 months after that initial conversation, Cartermere Farms was officially established with a five-acre expansion of vegetable plots, more than 200 laying hens, 15 bee hives and the groundwork for a grass-fed lamb operation. The farm’s expanding client list currently includes six restaurants and more than 200 retail customers. Offering fresh organic produce year-around, Cartermere Farms will have numerous types of heirloom tomatoes, peppers, onions, radishes, greens, lettuces, potatoes, beans, peas, squash, and other produce, in addition to free-range organic eggs and organic honey. “There are so many variables that came together to create this dream,” Nelson Carter shares. “Meeting chefs over a chicken coop, collaborating with one of the top restaurateurs in Texas to flesh out the farm’s vision, and having the support and active involvement of family to bring the farm dream into reality. I have no doubt God breathed life into this endeavor. I could not have done this alone.”

Celina Garden Club’s Downtown Abbey Tea Party By JoAnn May

ach year, during the month of May, the Celina Garden Club has a garden party. The ladies all dress up in all their finery and wear their hats. This year’s theme was a “Downtown Abbey “ tea party. It was held at JoAnn May’s house. The chairperson was Sue Verrill with Laura Chappell, Judy Toole, Cynthia Alexander, Cindy Purdy and JoAnn May on the committee. The guests were greeted at the door with a glass of Buck’s Fizz (what us Americans call a Mimosa) served by one of the downstairs staff (played by committee members). After socializing for awhile, everyone sat outside on the patio for a wonderful presentation about daffodils, given by Karla McKenzie, President of the Texas Daffodil Society. The downstairs staff then served the guests. There were tea sandwiches, asparagus soup, scones with clotted cream, petit fours and of course a pot of hot tea! On each table was a center piece filled with beautiful flowers from Cynthia Alexander’s garden. These beautiful arrangements were given to the person who had the sticker on the bottom of their plate. Also, there was a lovely vintage napkin filled with lavender for each person to take as a keepsake. Celina Garden Club History The seeds of the Celina Garden Club were first planted in June, 1945 by Mrs. T.O.Perry and continued to be active into the early 1960’s. At its most active, the club had more than 40 members who met once a month. With an em-

phasis on horticulture, the club had featured speakers, visited notable gardens in North Texas and worked on the Celina City Park. The Garden Club was also involved in such community work as the cemetery beautification project where they planted climbing scarlet roses along the fences. Some of these roses still survive today. The Celina Garden Club also held flower shows around town. The judges for these shows came from Dallas and Denton. The main criteria of the show were that the flowers in the arrangements had to be “home garden grown”. Proceeds from various fundraising endeavors were used for long-term planting and beautification projects. Susan Owens reorganized the current Celina Garden Club on January 28, 2002. Susan, a Collin County Master Gardener, felt there was definitely an interest in the community for such an organization. The current membership is made up of 40 local residents who share an avid interest in gardening. Meeting are held on the fourth Monday of every month (except July, November and December), and the members eagerly share their knowledge with each other. At each meeting a monthly newsletter is distributed, containing articles on various subjects written by different members. Many monthly meetings feature an authority on a specific gardening topic. SPCA Take Action Project Troop 4682 Celina, TX Our Brownies completed the Brownie Quest Journey to discover 3 keys. These keys had our troop members discover themselves and their values (Discover Key), connect with their families and each other (Connect Key), and take action within our community and improve their world (Take Action Key). Being the critter lovers they are, our girls decided to help our animal community and take action to collect supplies for the Russell H. Perry Animal Care Center, part of the SPCA of Texas. The girls researched what supplies the SPCA of Texas needed and then created posters to display in local businesses. Each poster included a SPCA wish list. Then the girls contacted business owners and school administrators to inquire about placing a box and a poster at their place of business to collect supplies. The girls had to do all the talking. It was great to see their confidence and excitement as they explained the project. We ended up with four collection boxes out in the community. The staff and animals at the SPCA will benefit from our donations. Supplies dropped off included office supplies, dog food, cat food, cat litter, toys, leashes and collars, medical supplies like cotton balls and Q-Tips, laundry detergent, hand sanitizer, towels and blankets, newspaper, and two dog houses. Our Girl Scouts also benefited from this drive. They saw how just a few girls can make a big difference. They were so proud of what they had done and were very excited to drop off all of the supplies they collected. A very big thank you to our awesome moms who also helped with the girls’ transportation, pickup and delivery of donations and helping the girls practice their speeches. Who was involved? Most of Troop 4682’s Girl Scouts were involved. All or our Scouts are 2nd Graders at Celina Elementary. Aimee Clarke, Lucey Flores, Abby Norris, Maria Napolitano, Maggie Stroot Emily Torkiya, Hailey Vaughn, Shana White Donation boxes were placed at the following locations. - Celina Elementary (Contact: Starla Martin, Principal) - NTA Prosper (Contacts: Master Michael Grant and Becky Grant) - Celina Spirit Shack (Contact: Christina Craven, Owner) - Brickhouse Cardio Club, Celina (Contact: Wendy Tipper, Owner) Brickhouse Cardio Club took things one step further for us and offered a free Zumba party on April 28th for anyone that brought a donation for the SPCA! Wendy also offered to waive the signup fee if people joined Brickhouse and brought a donation!
