First Annual CISD Registration
From the Desk of Mr. Rick DeMasters Celina ISD Superintendent of Schools
R
egistering your children for school at any level is not without its headaches. Finding all of the documentation you need to enroll can be cumbersome, especially if you are in the process of relocating to the area and must figure out which moving box contains the vital information. Secondly, the first week of school brings more paperwork to fill out and return, which can be especially harrowing if you have multiple children enrolled. The Celina Independent School District has been working diligently over the past year to find ways to simplify the process of registration in order to help our families and students transition back to school as smoothly as possible. On August 2nd, the first annual CISD Registration Fair will be held at Celina High School from 8:00am-12:00pm, and again from 3:00pm7:00pm. The entrance to the fair will be on the East side, (football field side) of the high school building, instead of the front entrance. Doors will be closed from 12:00pm to 3:00pm for lunch and to take care of any issues that may arise during the morning session. The fair is open to new and returning students from ALL CISD campuses. For example, if you have children that attend different campuses, you will be able to register both children at the fair. We strongly encourage all of our parents to attend the registration fair, but if you are unable to attend, registration packets will be available at your child’s campus starting on August 3rd. Completed registration packets must be returned to your child’s campus before the first day of school. The CISD Registration Fair will be set up in “Stations,” which we hope will make the process as pain free as possible. Spanish translation will be provided for our Non-English speaking families. The stations are listed below, with information you will need to be able to register your children. Station 1 Proof of Residency - CISD Faculty will check your photo ID, and will ask for your proof of residency. The district can accept a copy of a current utility bill and/or lease agreement that provides your legal name and address within CISD boundaries as proof of residency. If you are in the process of building your home, you must have documents that state that your home will be completed before the end of the 1st semester. Mrs. Melanie Jackson, Celina Junior High Counselor will be available to answer any questions you may have regarding your proof of residency.
8
CelinaMagazine.com | July 2016
As a reminder, proof of residency is required from all returning and new students each year. Once you have been cleared through Station 1, your proof of residency will be attached to the CISD Check Off form and stamped, which allows you to proceed to the next station. Station 2 Transportation - If you have children that will be riding a bus to and from school, you will be able to speak with representatives from the CISD Transportation Department to confirm what bus they will ride and approximate times and locations for pick-up and drop-off. Station 3 Survey Information - The district is required each year to collect surveys from our parents related to local and federal programs. You will be given these surveys to complete before leaving. The completed survey packet will be collected at Station 9. Your CISD Registration Check Off form will be stamped at Station 3 when you are given your survey packet. Station 4 Email - In order to communicate effectively, it is vitally important that we have current email addresses for our CISD families. If you do not have an email account, CISD representatives will be available to help you set up an account. All parent/legal guardians must have an email account in order to access Parent Portal. Station 5 New Students - If you are new to the District, registration paperwork will be available for you to fill out here for PreK - 12th grades. (This only applies to students that are new to our district.) Station 6 Parent Portal - In order to keep up with your child’s progress, it is very important that you set up a Parent Portal account. Online registration forms can be found through Parent Portal and must be completed either prior to the fair or at this time. Our Technology Department personnel will be on hand to give assistance to parents that do not have a Parent Portal account, and also to those that have an existing account and have already completed their online forms. If you have completed the registration forms online, please print off the confirmation page to be collected at this station. Your CISD Check Off form will be stamped when your confirmation page has been received. Station 7 Medical Information - Our CISD School Nurses will be available to check over shot records, medical forms and answer any questions you may have regarding student health issues, allergies, epi-pens, etc. The “Shot Van” will be on the Celina Junior High campus on August 9th, if
We look forward to serving you with a mortgage strategy to make your dream of home ownership come true!
vaccinations or boosters are needed. The “Shot Van” is open to all ages and will also file to your insurance provider. As a reminder, all food allergies and/or other specific medical needs must be documented and accompanied by a physician’s order. Your CISD Check Off form will be stamped before proceeding to the next station. Station 8 Food Services - The Food Services department personnel will be here to answer any questions you have concerning the school lunch program, and associated costs. Don’t forget to ask about the “My School Bucks” program, which allows you the flexibility of paying online for your child’s lunches. You can also use the program to pay for other items offered through the school district including CISD Spirit Wear, Athletic gear, and other fundraisers. Free and/or reduced lunch applications will also be available. Station 9 Campus Table - You Made It! Each campus will have a table set up in the high school cafeteria. You will turn in the CISD Check Off form and the completed survey packet given to you at Station 3. You will be able to meet and visit with administrators, counselors and front office personnel from your child’s campus and pick up important information about activities scheduled at each campus. Station 10 School Organizations - PTA, C.A.R.E, Bobcat Moms, and the Quarterback Club will have representatives on hand to talk with you about their organizations, including information on membership, activities, volunteer opportunities, fundraising, and much more. We value these organizations and appreciate the support they provide to our students and campuses, but in order for them to be successful, they rely on existing and new members to help carry on the traditions that make our district unique. Please take a moment to meet with these great organizations and see how you can get involved! Celina ISD is committed to finding new ways to make the transition back to school as painless as possible. We hope that the Celina ISD Registration Fair will not only make the registration process pain free, but will provide our parents with opportunities to join organizations that support their students not only on the campus level but beyond. Our CISD Administration, Faculty and Staff members are excited about this opportunity to get to know our families and welcome those that are new to our district. I look forward to seeing all of you on August 2nd!

City of Celina
Is it a What-A-Burger or a Starbucks? As signs of new construction are spotted in Celina, the phone calls and messages come into the City asking what is being built and if it’s the “one thing” the caller wants to see next in Celina. So, for the What-A–Burger and Starbucks inquirers, the answer is “not yet.” But dirt is turning and construction is popping out of the ground all around in Celina. Some myth and rumor; some fact. So here’s the official scoop on what’s scheduled this summer: Tractor Supply will begin construction on their property immediately north and adjacent to Mudpies & Lullabies on Business 289 with the store opening anticipated late 2016 or early 2017.
Mustang Lakes Phase 1, with 335 lots located at FM1461/Frontier Parkway and FM2478/Custer Road, has developed lots ready for contract and four builders are starting homes in this phase. The property will ultimately feature 1,911 homes at build-out and has nine lakes, a community center, and walking trails.
12
CelinaMagazine.com | July 2016
Celina Village, a front porch community, is building on a new cul-de-sac street, Magnolia Court, off North Florida Street, to accommodate nineteen new residential lots in the Old Town area. These homes will have the look and feel of Old Town with modern amenities.
Creeks of Legacy, located at CR6/Legacy Drive and Frontier Parkway, currently has eleven homes under construction, with an ultimate build-out of 1,030 homes. Parkside Phase I on FM428, across from Old Celina Park, plans for a total of seventy-eight homes with twenty currently under construction and new residents moving in. Street construction is underway for Phase II with an additional 122 lots.
Hillwood’s Lilyana, a 400-acre development with 1,300 lots at FM1461/Frontier Parkway and CR 83/Coit Road, has streets under construction for delivery of 300 lots in late 2016.
Light Farms homebuilders continue to produce 300–400 homes each year as lots become available in the current phases. Additional phases are under construction. Light Farms currently has 473 occupied homes and is projected to reach build-out in 2022.
Along with these projects bringing rooftops and new families to Celina, we will see additional commercial and retail projects underway that are anticipated before year end.

The arrival of milder temperatures means dining al fresco, hosting neighborhood cookouts and enjoying intimate cocktail parties under the stars. When creating a backyard oasis to entertain family and friends this summer, it’s important for your space to be both inviting and able to withstand the wear and tear that goes hand-in-hand with warm-weather fun. The outdoor living experts at Trex, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing, suggest the following tips:
Check your deck
Because people always follow the food, you may also want to set up food or serving carts at the edge of your social space.
Nothing spoils a deck party like a nasty splinter or a trip over an uneven board. If your deck needs a “face lift,” consider replacing old, rotting or warping boards with wood-alternative decking that combines superior durability and low-maintenance with long-lasting good looks.
And don’t forget a kid-friendly zone with games, such as corn hole, badminton and ladder ball, and other fun activities that require minimal supervision to help keep children entertained and allow grown-up guests to mingle and enjoy themselves.
Unlike wood, high-performance composites resist fading, staining, scratching and mold - and won’t rot, warp, crack or splinter. Upkeep is hassle-free with no sanding, staining or painting required and food and drink spills wash off easily with soap and water.
Frame your space
“Who wants an outdoor space that they have to spend more time maintaining than enjoying? For me, composite decking is a no-brainer,” said celebrity deck designer Paul Lafrance of HGTV’s acclaimed “Decked Out” series. “It delivers all the beauty and aesthetics of wood without the back-breaking and timeconsuming upkeep.” Made from reclaimed and recycled materials, composite decking is also environmentally friendly, making it an ideal choice for today’s increasingly ecoconscious consumers.
Create zones Maximize the function and flow of your outdoor living space by creating different entertainment and comfort “zones.” Establish separate areas for cooking, eating and socializing, just as you have inside your home. Incorporate lots of comfortable seating and dedicate space for guests to relax and converse. Structures like pergolas, trellises, or even tall potted plants, can help separate and define different settings. Food and drink stations - arguably the most crucial element of a party - should be prominent and accessible to guests.
14
CelinaMagazine.com | July 2016
While railings provide an obvious and necessary safety function, they also serve an important aesthetic role by creating a decorative frame for outdoor spaces. Additionally, the right railing can maximize scenic views or enhance the privacy of an outdoor setting. Available in a wide variety of designs, materials and colors, there are thousands of decking and railing combinations from which to choose. To help simplify the selection process, Trex offers a Decking and Railing Duos online tool, which delivers customized couplings based on consumer preferences and proven, designer-selected pairings. The tool even allows users to download a complete ordering guide and materials list for their favorite looks.
Let there be light The right lighting can take any outdoor space from invisible to inviting. Adding dimmable LED lighting to railings and stairs not only adds atmosphere, but also enhances security and extends the time you can spend enjoying your outdoor living space. For maximum ambiance and safety, focus on illuminating entryways, paths, steps, railings and specific task areas, such as an outdoor kitchen or bar. On a budget? Infuse light and warmth with candles, lanterns or tiki torches. “One of the hottest trends right now - literally - is fire features that not only add ambiance to an outdoor space but also provide heat and light that allow you to use your deck later into the evening and into the year,” Lafrance said. “Fire pits and fireplaces also provide great
focal points and natural gathering spots for conversation and, of course, s’mores.”
Stock up on storage Make entertaining a breeze with built-in storage to keep backyard bash supplies organized and at-hand. Homeowners can now outfit an outdoor living space with ingenious storage solutions for everything from pillows and pool supplies to food, beverages and tableware. The Trex Outdoor Storage collection even offers a hidden ice drawer that chills drinks and snacks so hosts can spend time enjoying the festivities rather than continuously running inside to replenish what’s needed outside.
Don’t forget the finishing touches Customize your outdoor living space to make family and friends feel truly welcome. Infuse charm and your own personal style with

accessories such as vibrant weather- and stainresistant throw pillows and cushions. Opt for elegant outdoor tableware over flimsy paper and plastic, and integrate artistic accents and accessories just as you would inside your home to give the space the look and feel of an outdoor great room. “There is a huge trend right now of bringing traditionally ‘indoor’ comforts out to the deck, porch or patio to create fully functional and furnished outdoor rooms,” Lafrance said. “Thanks to advances in all-weather materials, furnishings and accessories, you can outfit an outdoor living space in much the same way that you would any room in the home.”

As temperatures rise, it’s the perfect time to gather friends and family for a getaway in your own backyard. Spruce up your space with furniture and accessories that reflect the newest sights and styles of summer for a patioready look that truly takes you places. Nothing brings people together quite like a party on the patio. Creating a bright, blissful space for your patio celebration is simple when you coordinate everything from dinnerware and drinkware to seating, accessories and even the entertainment.
Table talk. Making vivid
memories is as simple as setting your table with a vibrant array. Top your table with layers of colors, textures and bold patterns. Use shatter-resistant dishes and dinnerware made of melamine for a tabletop that is as attractive as it is easy to care for.
Drink up. Quench guests’ thirst with a cold, refreshing drink station.
Turn one corner of your party into a one-stop shop for drinks. Fill an embossed, copper-finished beverage tub with ice and drinks to create your own personal party server. It’s a must-have for hosts who like to mingle.
16
CelinaMagazine.com | July 2016
Or add punch to your party with a jug-shaped acrylic beverage dispenser and a selection of drinkware made for outdoor entertaining. For example, BPA-free Clarity acrylic drinkware from Pier 1 Imports offers the classic good looks of glassware, but the shatter-resistant vessels are at home inside and out. Available in a brilliant range of colors and silhouettes, Clarity pairs perfectly with a line of melamine dinnerware for a cohesive table setting.
Outdoor seating. Incorporating sectional seating allows you to customize
the size and shape that fit your needs. By placing furniture in a corner, you increase functionality without wasting an inch. An ottoman can serve as a small coffee table or low dining table, creating a variety of options for how to use the space. Similarly, repurpose garden stools for multiple uses like tables, plant stands and impromptu seating.
Light the night. Crafted of weathered wood and mixed metals, lanterns
come alive when the sun goes down. Pair them with flameless LEDs and a remote control so you can turn the festivities on and off at the touch of a button. Group lanterns together and fill a few with surprising elements, like terrarium ornaments and faux succulents. Or for high-traffic areas, Pier 1 Imports’ lanterns and string lights are a perfect solution. Safe for children and pets, these colorful lights are decorative by day and illuminate the celebration after sunset.

delving into blue-hued accessories like pillows or curtains that run the gamut from classic stripes to pretty prints and embellishments. Whether in classic patterns or newly edged in a golden hue, they’re sure to soften the look of your room. Coordinate the color and texture of your textiles for a designer-worthy look.
Take inspiration from nature. For a fresh look, use faux succulents,
florals and topiaries. Displayed on mantels, hung near a window or placed on a desk in your home office, they can help introduce a tranquility that’s refreshingly low-maintenance. A natural material like wicker, which doesn’t stand up to the elements as well as some other materials, is a great way to give your furniture a refreshed summer feel.
Bring the beach home. Blend ocean-inspired colors such as blues, greens and corals with sandy neutrals and driftwood accents. Give your indoor space even more beachside ambience by incorporating seashells, starfish and anchors into your décor.

In Good Taste
Firing up the grill is an American tradition. The farm families who produce the food so many people enjoy at backyard cookouts want to share some of their favorite grilling recipes, as well as an appreciation for how food gets from the farm to the table. Farmers like Amanda Folkens, from Iowa, Danell Kalcevic, from Colorado, and Nicole Small, from Kansas, have joined with more than 70 other farmer volunteers across the country in the CommonGround program as a way to talk with home cooks about how food is grown and raised. “On our farm, animal care is top priority, as it is for thousands of other family farms in the U.S.” said Amanda. “By keeping our animals indoors, we make sure they are protected from predators, disease and bad weather.”s Safe Minimum Internal Temperatures 145°F Beef, pork, veal and lamb (roasts, steaks and chops) 160°F Ground meat 165°F Poultry (whole, parts or ground) Things to Know Before You Shop the Meat Case — There’s no need to pay extra for poultry or pork that’s labeled hormonefree. USDA prohibits farmers from using hormones to raise chicken and pigs. — Nearly all beef cattle, whether raised organically or conventionally, spend the majority of their lives on pastures eating grass. — Purchasing organic, grass-fed and free-range meats does not make them safer to consume. These labels refer to how the animals are raised, but all meat and poultry can contain bacteria that could cause illness. — Most cases of foodborne illness can be prevented with proper processing, handling and cooking of food to destroy bacteria. Here are some of Amanda, Danell and Nicole’s favorite grilling recipes.

Grilled Hawaiian Ham Sandwich
By Amanda Folkens Serves: 1 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1/2 tablespoon seasoning pepper 1 to 2 1/4-inch thick ham slices (about the same thickness as the bread) Cooking spray Pineapple slices (can be fresh or canned) 2 slices sourdough bread Preheat grill for high heat. Mix brown sugar with pepper to create a rub mixture. Using your hands, massage the rub onto both sides of the slices of ham. Ham slices should be completely covered (front and back) with brown sugar mix. Place ham slices on sheet of lightly greased foil, then place onto grill. On separate sheet of greased foil, lay pineapple slices out, uncovered. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes or until brown caramelization appears around edges of ham and pineapple. Remove ham and pineapple from heat and assemble onto toasted sourdough bread.
Beef Rack of Ribs
By Danell Kalcevic Serves: 4 to 6 Salt (to taste) 1 tablespoon black pepper (to taste) 1 tablespoon seasoned garlic salt (to taste) Cayenne pepper (optional) 1 to 2 racks of beef ribs (number of racks based on number of people) 1 tablespoon yellow mustard 1/3 cup brown sugar One bottle of favorite barbeque sauce The night before serving, prepare rub for beef ribs (salt, pepper, seasoned garlic salt and optional cayenne pepper). Sprinkle both sides of ribs and then rub vigorously. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, place on medium temperature grill and spread yellow mustard and brown sugar on each side of the ribs. Grill for 5 to 8 minutes until each side is slightly browned and caramelized. Remove ribs from grill and slice with sharp knife. Place individual ribs in a crock pot on low. Add one bottle of your favorite barbeque sauce. Let simmer 6 to 8 hours.

Wax on a schedule
I
t’s time to get your body ready for tanks and shorts, bikinis at the beach, evenings out with friends and vacationing with family – all of which mean showing off your beautiful skin. Summer styles call for a whole new approach to body care. You can boost your summer beauty regimen by giving your body extra attention from head to toe and adding a few of these expert tips and products from European Wax Center to your routine, giving you the confidence to show off your skin at every warm-weather occasion. Find more tips and products to be gorgeous in your own skin at waxcenter.com. Hair Removal Tips One hair can make a big difference in how you look and feel, especially since you’re going to be showing off more skin this summer. European Wax Center’s Chief Wax Expert and Educator Melanie Gilliland offers the following tips to keep hair contained to and growing only where you want it: Never tweeze ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs would be much less of an issue if they were left alone and treated with an ingrown hair serum or ingrown hair wipes. Picking ingrown hairs makes them 10 times worse and can scar the skin. If the hair is partially outside of the skin and you can easily grab it with tweezers without breaking skin or digging in the least, feel free to remove it. If it requires digging, popping or squeezing, hide your tweezers and leave it alone.

The most effective way to reduce discomfort is to wax on a schedule (approximately every 3-4 weeks), which will also help accelerate results, such as hair thinning and growing in more sparsely. Waxing too often (when the hair is too short) will actually be more painful and if the hair is too long, it indicates that you have waited too long and now the hair has had more time to root itself. Banish ingrown hairs Make banishing bumps and ingrown hairs disappear quickly and easily while visibly helping slow the regrowth of hair between waxes with convenient, single-use Smooth Me Ingrown Hair Wipes that help nip pesky ingrown hairs anyplace, anytime. These portable wipes are infused with alpha and beta hydroxy acids, and prevent bumps when used daily (twice daily for existing breakouts). Say bye, bye to dead skin You can wave goodbye to dry, dead skin and accelerate cell renewal without any harsh abrasives and prevent ingrown hairs by helping keep hair follicles clear after waxing with Reveal Me Body Exfoliating Gel. Naturally derived fruit enzymes eliminate dry, dull surface cells and support natural cell turnover, and Comfort Blend calms, nourishes and restores skin. While it’s gentle enough for daily use, it’s recommended at least three times a week to help maintain beautiful skin. Give your skin a radiant glow Since you’ll be exposing more skin this summer, make sure it has an undeniably radiant glow. Cheeky, Graceful and Sensual Strut Body Polishes are high-performing exfoliators that help prevent unsightly bumps and ingrown hairs, visibly slowing the growth of hair between waxes to keep skin smooth and looking its best.

In His Presence
The Spoken Word Is A Powerful Tool... It has been used throughout human history for good and ill -- to bless and to bring freedom, and to oppress and bring destruction. Words have the power to change the world. Some examples from the 20th Century stand out in my mind: -Ronald Reagan (1987), in West Berlin – “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” -Martin Luther King (1963), in Washington D.C. – “I have a dream…” -Winston Churchill (1941), during the depths of War 2 – “Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never…”’ Individually, we know the power of words spoken to us, or words spoken about us. In your own life, I’m sure you could testify – quote perhaps – things that people have said to you that have blessed you, encouraged you, and changed you for the good, as well as things people have said to you that hurt you, wounded you, and changed the course of your life because of the evil in their words. When we were kids, we used to say “Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” That’s just a lie. It wasn’t true. Words can wound. In fact, the wounds left by words can linger much longer than a bruise: for weeks, years, decades, even a lifetime. Now I agree that we shouldn’t let every negative thing that people say to us, or write about us, wound us. We shouldn’t. But the reality is they often do. The Bible has much to say about the power of words. It tells us that words can revive. They have the power to encourage our souls through gratitude and blessings; to connect us to God through praise and worship; and to build people up through appreciation and grace. Proverbs tell us “A gentle tongue is a tree of life…” (15:4), and “The tongue of the wise brings healing…” (12:18). The Bible tells us that words can wound. Proverbs 12:18 says “Rash words are like sword thrusts…” We all know this by experience. Jean Paul Sartre accurately said “words are like loaded pistols.” Yes, they can be. They certainly can hurt. But most importantly, the Bible teaches us that words reveal. Jesus said in Matthew 15:18: “But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.” He also noted: For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34). In other words, if you have a problem with harsh words or a bitter tongue, the issue does not lie with the mouth only. It is ultimately a heart issue. James said it this way: Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger… Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. Now I’m sure we would all say we need to be quicker to hear, slower to speak, and slower to become angry. But the solution is not primarily about “taming” your tongue -- repressing it when it wants to lash out, or silencing it when it wants to gossip, or biting it when it wants to tear down. Those are certainly commands from scripture. But Jesus and James both teach us our words are merely a product of what’s going on in our souls. That’s why James’ solution is a spiritual one: “Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls” (James 1:21). Think of your words like a thermometer. What does a thermometer do? It measures the temperature inside of us. It is interesting to me that you put the thermometer (at least the old school ones) under your tongue. How appropriate! So let’s take a reading of the temperature of our souls by examining our words. Do your words revive? Or wound? Do you bless and build up, or discourage and tear down? Do your “I love yous” outnumber your “I’m disappointed with yous”? Remember, it is a soul issue. James gave us the key in James 1:21 – repent and receive. Repent of our sin, and receive the Word into our heart – Jesus Christ. When that happens a transformation of the heart occurs (2 Cor. 5:17). And a transformed heart transforms our words. Pastor John Herring First Baptist Church Prosper
