CISD News
From the Desk of Mr. Rick DeMasters Celina ISD Superintendent of Schools
The month of May signals in some individuals pure joy that summer break is near, which translates into uninterrupted time spent with family and friends. In others, it signals the acceptance of huge life changes, especially for our 2017 graduation class. Their friends and family members will watch them walk across the stage empty handed until the coveted diploma is placed in their hand, thus ending their high school years to embark on a new adventure that takes many of them away from the comforts and familiarity of home. But, before we can even experience the joys and possibilities that are on the horizon, we must first get through the numerous end of year activities that make us thankful that the month of May has thirty-one days. STAAR testing starts on May 2nd, and continues through the 11th. High School students enrolled in AP courses will be taking Advanced Placement exams over the first two weeks of May, while also preparing for their high school finals. Our Fine Arts programs will be hosting their end of year concerts and banquets. The CHS Choir concert will be held on May 9th and the Junior High concert is scheduled for May 11th. There will be many soloists as well as group numbers. The choir banquet will be held on May 18th. The band

banquet is scheduled for May 12th, followed by the Celina Middle School and Junior High Band concert scheduled for May 18th. The Celina High School Band will perform their Spring concert on May 19th in the CHS Auditorium. The youngest of our Bobcats will be enjoying Kindergarten Rodeo on May 5th, which is a day filled with fun activities and lasting memories spent with their teachers and classmates before Kindergarten Graduation on May 23rd, signaling their final days spent as a kindergartner. Our Pre-Kindergarten students will also experience graduation festivities on May 22nd. But, it is our seniors, the graduating class of 2017 that will be the busiest of all. Starting back in August of 2016, parents of CHS Seniors have been checking items off their list as they complete the last first day of high school, the last senior night, graduation pictures, scholarship applications, ordering announcements, final banquets, Baccalaureate and graduation practices. CHS Academic Awards for 9th-12th graders will be held on the night of May 8th. CHS Senior Scholarship Night is scheduled on May 15th. Both of these award ceremonies are by invitation only and are for students that will be presented with an award or scholarship. The graduating class will spend the last two weeks of school preparing for the Baccalaureate Service held on Sunday, May 21st, at First Baptist Celina and CHS Graduation on

Friday, May 26th to be held at Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco. A long standing tradition for the Celina High School graduating class is Project Graduation. The program was started many years ago, which promotes alcohol-free activities as an alternative post-graduation party. The students are scheduled to meet at First Baptist Church just a few hours after the graduation ceremony has concluded, pile onto school buses for one final field trip with their classmates before they head off in different directions. This year, the class will be celebrating at Speed Zone, where they will spend the entire night on the race tracks, playing miniature golf and hanging out with their classmates one last time. After a great night spent with friends, they will return at 6:00am to breakfast and gift cards. What a great way to end your high school years! As Mark Twain once said, “The two most important days in your life consist of the day you were born and the day you find out why.” To The Class of 2017....My congratulations on a job well done and may you all find the “why” as you embark on this new adventure called your future!

CELINA’S OWN By: Renee Marler
Those who have been around Celina half a decade or more will remember the name Jordan Roos ringing out over the speakers at Bobcat Stadium every Friday night. The speakers will sound off once again for Roos, but instead of Friday nights, you’ll need to listen on Sunday’s for that oh-so familiar name. Jordan Roos is now a Seattle Seahawk. The news came in the seventh round of the NFL Draft on Saturday night. “I was at Top Golf with my family, girlfriend and friends from Celina when my phone started ringing,” said Roos. Roos said he stepped away from the crowd to take the 10 to 15 calls from various NFL teams, but it was Seattle who would get the 6-foot-4-inch, 306-pound guard from Purdue University. “I got the call during the seventh round from the O-Line coach and then Pete Carroll [Seattle Seahawks Head Coach] got on the phone and told me they weren’t drafting me, but that I was the first person he wanted to speak with after the draft,” said Roos. While Seattle offered Roos an impressive signing bonus, that wouldn’t be the ultimate deciding factor in the decision as he wanted to join a program he felt offered him his best opportunity. “I walked back and told everyone and they all started crying, it’s been a whirlwind,” he said quietly. Roos played in 43 games in the Big 10 for Purdue, but only had nine wins in his tenure there. When asked what he thinks caught the eye of the NFL, Roos was quick to say he felt being receptive to coaching and truly listening to coaches was certainly a factor. “I had to make sure I was still putting my best on film every week despite the score,” insists Roos. “I had to be 100 percent locked in all the time and I never backed down. I am very proud of that.” Roos was chosen by his teammates as a team captain for Purdue his senior year due to his determination and leadership on and off the field.

“We didn’t win a lot, but I set the tempo and made sure we, as a team, didn’t sink below that and if so, it was adjusted immediately,” he said. Roos knew in third grade that he wanted to be a professional football player and his parents, Peter and Judy, helped him set goals every step of the way. “My parents have always told me that I could achieve whatever I dreamed if I work hard, keep confident and play with passion,” said Roos. “I will never let effort be an issue.” Roos put in his fair share of effort and then some. On Mondays, the day many of his Purdue teammates were taking the day off to recover from the grueling physicality of college football, Roos was in the weight room for two hours lifting. Whatever the future holds for Roos, you can bet he will keep his Celina roots in his heart; and Celina will always claim Roos as a favorite son.

“The NFL is the pinnacle of football and every day I get to do this is a privilege that I will never take for granted,” said Roos. “Dream Big! Set the bar high and if you fail, you’ll still be above everyone else.”

Bobcat Baseball Wrapping Up, Looking Ahead The season didn’t quite go as planned for the Bobcats, but Celina coach Heath Herron says despite having an overall record of 9-18-1, there was a lot to be proud of. “The team batting average was .300, averaging 4.6 runs per game,” said Herron. “And our defense improved tremendously throughout the season.” The Bobcats had seven seniors on this year’s team; Trent Erhart, Carson Cobb, Logan Boyd, Christian Rivas, Mason Ray, Jeremy Holliday, and Oscar Sanchez. Ray, who played first base and pitcher, had a 0.41 ERA in district play, appearing in six games. Offensively, he led the team in a number of categories and hit .443 for the season. Boyd was a team leader in on-base percentage with 18 bases on balls and was hit by pitch five times. Freshman pitcher, Zane Barnett, though young, was impressive going 2-1 in district play and appearing in six games for Celina. Other notable Bobcats were sophomore Cade Medellin and junior Joe De Paolo, who hit .366 and .343, respectively.

Losing seven seniors in a season could possibly leave some question as to next year’s performance, but Herron says, “We will return five starters next season and will look to some of the junior varsity players (who finished 2nd in district) to step up. In addition to Barnett, Medellin and DePaolo, Herron says he will be counting on returners Logan Point, Riley Plunkett, Riley Briscoe, Michael Foreman and Jake Lacy.

Field of Dreams By: Renee Marler
People all over the country look forward to the red dirt, white lines and perfectly manicured grass of a baseball field, but for one team in Celina, the ball field is a place where dreams are realized, barriers are broken and happiness is abundant. The Celina All Stars is a team comprised of children and young adults from Celina, Prosper, and surrounding areas with special needs. Community volunteers help as buddies during practices and games. On the All Stars team, it doesn’t matter if you move around the bases on heels or wheels, and everyone who signs up is encouraged to participate. Coaching the All Stars this season are Phil and Mary Bush, who’s son, Dylan, plays on the team. “Roy and Stephanie Kirby started the team with their son, Petre, but they were unable to coach this year so we took it over,” said Mary. The Celina All Stars have been around for a number of years. Lucy Del Plato also coached in past years. Her son, Anthony, is a current player. The Celina All Stars are not lacking for cheerleaders. Every game brings out a group of spectators ready to cheer on the team. “We want everyone to hear that excitement when they cross home plate,” says Bush. “Everybody cheers for everybody.” The final game of the season will be held at 6 p.m. May 9 at Old Celina Park. For information on joining or volunteering, please visit the Celina All Stars Softball Facebook page @ CelinaAllStarsSoftball or turn out for a game and meet the team.
“In the past I have had up to 5 of my children on the team. This year, only three. All Stars give my children an activity to look forward to, where they don’t feel isolated in the ‘typical’ world. I love that it gives each of them a chance to feel successful. They enjoy having fun with their peers.” – Judy Rogers
