Simplify Holiday Hosting from Start to Finish Hosting a major holiday event is no small effort. It requires close attention to detail from planning, cooking and cleaning to entertaining guests on the big day. Fortunately, just like any good recipe, approaching your hosting duties one step at a time can allow you to create a magnificent final product. This Thanksgiving, the experts at Finish are helping hosts everywhere get organized, from the initial planning all the way through clean up, with the Ultimate Thanksgiving Timer. Created in partnership with Gaby Dalkin of “What’s Gaby Cooking,” it’s a personalized hosting timeline designed to help hosts stay on track up to and throughout the big day. “I’ve been hosting holiday gatherings for years and know from firsthand experience that even capable hosts struggle to time everything just right,” Dalkin said. “From planning your menu and designing your tablescape to accommodating dietary restrictions and even serving dessert, the Ultimate Thanksgiving Timer will support hosts every step of the way this year.” Plan Your Guest List and Menu Deciding how many guests you’ll be serving and what you plan to serve are two essential details that will guide the rest of your planning. When creating your guest list, be realistic about how many are likely to attend and plan your menu for a few extra people so you don’t run out of food. Your menu may also 8 | WeAreProsper.com
be influenced by how many guests you plan to host; a whole turkey is practical for a large group, but a turkey breast may be adequate for a more intimate gathering. Remember to send your invites at least three weeks ahead of the event so guests have plenty of time to respond and you can prepare your menu. Start Grocery Shopping Early The rush at the grocery store can be one of the most stressful parts of getting ready to host. Give yourself enough lead time by picking up pantry staples and beverages 1-2 weeks out so your kitchen is stocked for the big day. For perishables, get to the grocery store early in the day 1-2 days before hosting to beat the rush and avoid any last-minute grocery runs the morning of your gathering.
Maximize Prep Time While it’s likely the majority of your work will come on the big day, you can work ahead to reduce some of the load. For example, you can wash and chop vegetables for stuffing and other side dishes and store them overnight to minimize prep time in the morning. You can also use the quiet of the night before to tackle tasks like setting the table and organizing your seating chart, restocking towels and replenishing other essentials in the guest bathroom. Enlist Help with Cooking The day of your event is the perfect time to pull extra hands into the kitchen. A simple but tasty recipe like this Ultimate Cheesy Herb Sourdough Stuffing from Dalkin is a sure crowd-pleaser to add to your table this year.
Once you establish your cooking space and find your rhythm, you may even find sharing the preparations with a loved one is a great way to bond and create special memories. Make Cleanup a Cinch A few simple tricks can help you maintain a relatively clean workspace and keep up with all the dishes you need to prepare a lavish meal. First, be sure to clean up as you go. It may be tempting to throw all of your dirty utensils and empty mixing bowls in a pile in the sink to deal with later, but taking a few minutes to scrape dishes and load the dishwasher as you go can help prevent a messy mountain from forming. That also means you’ll be more likely to find a clean measuring cup or spoon when you move on to prepare the next dish. Hosts have enough to worry about, so let your dishwasher do the hard work and pull in reinforcements to help clean up while you relax after a long day. Use a detergent that works in the toughest conditions, from burnton stains to old dishwashers and hard water, like Finish Ultimate. It’s the only dish detergent tab with CycleSync technology that releases the right ingredient at the right time to work with your dishwasher. You can skip the rinse, even on tough stains like cranberry sauce and gravy, and save up to 20 gallons of water. Hosts are invited to put Finish Ultimate to the test and take the Ultimate Thanksgiving Challenge; if it can’t tackle your burnt-on stains, the meal is on Finish via a rebate of up to $30. Town of Prosper and Prosper Rotary Club Partner on New Veterans Memorial Project Rotarians seek community assistance and support
The Prosper Rotary Club recently announced the construction of the Prosper Veterans Memorial at the Town’s sprawling Frontier Park. The Town of Prosper donated the property as a patriotic initiative aiming to recognize and honor all veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces, including the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard and Space Force. The Prosper Rotary Club will assume a leadership role during the fundraising and construction phases, overseeing a committee of community representatives for the memorial. Once complete, the Town of Prosper will provide maintenance services to ensure its upkeep. The Prosper Veterans Memorial will serve as a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of our veterans, enhancing our community and providing a lasting place for reflection and commemoration. The collaborative effort of various organizations, including the Prosper Rotary Club, Town of Prosper, Prosper Independent School District and Prosper Economic Development Corporation, underscores the significance of this project. “This Memorial represents a collective effort to recognize and appreciate the sacrifices made by our veterans,” stated Jon Kundak, President of the Prosper Rotary Club. “Just as the Town generously donated the space for the project, we invite the entire community to join us in showing our gratitude by supporting and partnering with this patriotic cause.” 10 | WeAreProsper.com
The Prosper Rotary Club has committed to donate $25,000 annually towards the ongoing fundraising efforts for the Memorial. To date, they have already received pledges amounting to approximately half of the total estimated cost of $600,000 for design and construction. The community is invited to rally behind this vital project by making financial contributions. Donations can be made by mailing a check to the Veterans Memorial at PO Box 643, Prosper, TX 75078. Alternatively, individuals can visit prosperrotary.org to donate securely by credit card. Individuals will also have the opportunity to honor a specific veteran by purchasing a personalized brick through the provided link on our website. For additional information about the Prosper Veterans Memorial and how to contribute, please visit the Prosper Rotary Club’s website at prosperrotary.org. Remember When:
The History of Prosper, Texas We have been talking in the past few months about early Prosper and the hardships our families faced as they moved from the Eastern United States to Texas and Collin County. One of them was my great grandfather, James L. Robinson. He led a very interesting life and I’d like to share his history and his journey as he moved from Tennessee to Collin County in 1890. James L. Robinson was born in DeKalb County, Tennessee on November 4, 1834, to parents Jonas and Fannie Robinson and he was one of six children. They lived in a very rural area on a creek called Long Branch. It was in the Appalachian Mountains north of Smithville, Tennessee. The nearest town was Temperance Hall, which was located approximately halfway between Liberty and Lancaster on Route 264. I think most of Temperance Hall was taken by the water when they built the dam, and the highway has now changed to number 60. This area is about 70 miles east of Nashville, Tennessee
About halfway between Temperance Hall and the Robinson homestead was an old country store. It was very old and had all kinds of homemade farming tools…washtubs hanging from the ceiling, wooden floors, no electricity, hoes, rakes, shoes, women’s dresses, men’s overalls, canned goods, feed, socks and about anything you would need to survive and farm in the hills of Tennessee. Also, there were some “moonshiners” along the way, but we did not bother them and hoped they would not bother us. It must be very unusual for a car to be driving up this road and I don’t think a car had ever traveled that road. I was glad we visited because we got to see how the people in the hills of Tennessee lived. Of course, my great grandfather, James L. Robinson, had already moved to Collin County with some of his children. He died on April 9, 1924, at 90 years of age. Some other families had purchased the old home place in Tennessee after they moved to Texas. We visited them and told them who we were and why we were there to visit. Another reason that we wanted to visit the home place was that the Corp. of Engineers were going to build a large Dam and all the land of Long Branch would be under water. The Dam was built in the 1950’s and the home place is now completely under water. The Dam and lake are located just south of I-40 and just Southwest of Cookville, Tennessee, about 20-25 miles. It is called Center Hill Lake. This lake is 64 miles in length. James L. Robinson married Frances Maxwell on May 13, 1858, in DeKalb County, Tennessee. They had 10 children and were farmers in Long Branch, Tennessee. The fourth child of James and Frances was named John Elbert Robinson, who became by grandfather. He was born July 5, 1867, in DeKalb County, Tennessee. Frances Maxwell Robinson died just after her 10th child was born in 1884. Two years later James L. Robinson married Emily Sandlin again. They had five children so in total there were 15 children. James served in the Union Army. Although he was from Tennessee, he joined the 5th Regiment of the Tennessee Infantry which was Union. He entered in June 1863 and was discharged in August 1865, and I have a copy of his discharge papers. John Elbert, who was my grandfather, was about 20 years old and could not get along with his stepmother so he left Tennessee and came to Texas in 1888 to settle in Rock Hill, which was a community just south of the current town of Prosper. It was located at the intersection of Rock Hill Road and Preston Road. In Rock Hill he met the Naugles who were one of the first settlers in the Rock Hill area. John Elbert ended up marrying Zora Ann Naugle and that is the lineage of my ancestors from my maternal side. John Elbert and Zora Ann Naugle had my mother, Leta Belle Robison and she married my father, Chester Gordon Hays.
on Interstate 40. The only way to their house on Long Branch was a place called Thompson’s Bluff and was just enough room on the mountain for a horse/mule to travel. It was eventually enlarged for a wagon to pass and cars in the 1940’s. I was fortunate enough to visit the Old Robinson Home place on Long Branch in 1950. That was 66 years ago - I was a kid and I had never crossed so many creeks and places that I didn’t think our car would get through. There was only enough room for one car, because during that time in the hills of Tennessee, there were very few with a car. All their travel was done by walking, wagon, horse, or mule. We travelled about 20 miles on this dirt/gravel road and there were no bridges when we crossed over water. Not once did we ever meet another car coming or going!

James L. moved his family to Texas around 1890 and the family settled in the Rock Hill, Richland, Celina, Rhea’s Mill and Frisco areas. At this time Prosper had not yet been founded. In addition to his 15 children, he had 69 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He farmed this area and in 1922 he was the oldest person living in Frisco. There are many of his descendents still living in this area. Charles “Sonnyboy” Robinson died a couple of years ago and his children, Henry, Winifred, James and Myra Sue are living in the area. Wayne VanBevers is also descendent of James Robinson. Karie Hays Dalton is a lineage of James L. Robinson as well as Kelli Hays Downs. All of my grandchildren are descendants of James L. Robinson. His lineage is going strong throughout the North Texas area.

Bring Back Family Bonding This Fall 3 ways to free up busy schedules to spend time with loved ones
Busy fall schedules often leave little time for the things that matter most – sharing special moments with those you love. This year, as time seems to speed up during another school year, making family bonding a priority in your household can start with a few simple tricks. Connect with your loved ones this fall while juggling hectic routines with this advice: Schedule Family Nights Desiring evenings spent with your nearest and dearest and actually making them happen are two separate things entirely. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season with days that feel too long and evenings that are often too short. Putting dedicated family nights on the calendar is a good way to avoid last-minute commitments that take away from important bonding time. Incorporate some favorite activities, whether your loved ones are board game enthusiasts or movie buffs, to give everyone something exciting to look forward to. Make Cooking Together a Family Activity Making dinner for the family shouldn’t take up valuable time that could be used for quality moments together. Seeking out quick and easy recipes leaves more hours in the day to spend with family members – or you can even make preparing dinner a family activity. Teaching kids how to make your favorite recipes creates great memories and can maximize time spent together. From making kid-approved lunchbox sliders together to preparing timesaving, weeknight-friendly 14 | WeAreProsper.com
sliders as a family after school, King’s Hawaiian Rolls and Slider Buns have the power to help unite busy parents and picky kids. Plus, they’re soft and fluffy with the right touch of sweetness, and sliders are customizable, easy, fun and always a crowd pleaser. These Ham and Swiss Sliders or Peanut Butter, Jelly and Banana Sliders offer ways kids can help, from layering meats and cheeses to spreading peanut butter. Everyone can lend a hand in the kitchen while enjoying quality time together. Encourage Extracurricular Participation Beyond those special moments at home, there are plenty of ways to connect with your kiddos. Encouraging them to participate in extracurricular activities, like sports, band, theater, dance, choir or other activities, provides a great way to enjoy something together as you watch your children branch out and try new things. If they happen to try an activity you used to (or still do) participate in, it’s an easy way to make a unique connection by sharing your own memories, offering helpful tips, or even passing down old equipment like sports gear or an instrument. Find more inspiration for family bonding with delicious meals and snacks by visiting KingsHawaiian.com.

Celebrate the Season with Pop-able Fall Flavors As part of the season of change with leaves crunching underfoot and a crispness in the air, remember to pause to celebrate a food known for its change, crunching and crispness – popcorn. In honor of National Popcorn Poppin’ Month, a time when farmers head to the fields to harvest crops, gather with loved ones to celebrate this humble yet extraordinary snack. Whether it’s prepped on the stove, in the microwave or purchased ready-to-eat, Americans consume around 14 billion quarts each year of the wholesome whole grain, according to the Popcorn Board. With each kernel, popcorn’s tantalizing aroma fills the air, setting off a journey of sensory bliss, as the sound of popping echoes in ears and the taste of buttery goodness dances on tongues. Whether enjoyed at the movies, during a cozy night in or at festive gatherings, popcorn brings people together, creating moments of shared joy and laughter. Catering to every palate, popcorn’s versatility knows few boundaries, as it can be dressed up with caramel, chocolate or even savory seasonings. Join the celebration this fall with a fitting recipe like Old Fashioned Bourbon Maple Popcorn with Pecans. Accented with warming flavors of bourbon, orange and bitters, this maple-glazed treat offers a fun, cocktail-inspired snack perfect for sharing. Discover more snacks that celebrate fall flavors at Popcorn.org. 16 | WeAreProsper.com

Calming Color: Design Inspiration for a Comforting, Relaxing Home Updating your home can provide the perfect opportunity to explore new design styles or refresh living spaces with a new color scheme. In fact, a coat of paint can help set the mood for entire rooms in your home. By turning to nature-inspired designs, you can create a sense of comfort and relaxation. A hybrid color, like Valspar’s 2024 Color of the Year, Renew Blue, is gentle and airy with a touch of blue to set a restful and meditative mood. The grayed sea green – inspired by fleeting things such as fog, mist, clouds and glacier lakes – is a seasonless and versatile hue that features a mid-tone blue with warm undertones and can be used in outdoor living spaces and four-season rooms alike.
“This mid-tone shade has become popular for wellness environments over the years due to its low saturation level, which evokes a sense of rest and calm,” said Sue Kim, Valspar’s director of color marketing. “The harmonious green and blue open the possibility for outdoor applications, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior.” To help elevate the mood in your home, consider implementing Renew Blue into one of these popular design trends that can update the look of nearly any of your indoor or outdoor spaces.
18 | WeAreProsper.com
Coastal Coastal looks are timeless designs that have remained relevant for years because of their positive correlation to calming beach locations. Perfect for outdoor spaces like the backyard, you can implement a more curated and personal take on the trend by shifting from “typical” coastal design that pairs beachy hues with natural textures like rope, driftwood and wicker to something more classic and natural like the Cape Cod variation by working in some nautical touches like anchors, oars or seashells. Modern Farmhouse In the entryway, using beautiful and functional decor, such as unique ceramics and handwoven textiles, helps usher in a modern rustic style. By using timeless tones and accents, as well as layering heritage art, you can create visual mystery while elevating the ordinary to make your home feel warm and welcoming to guests from the moment they walk through the door. Nordic Comfort
Modern Traditional is a style that came together over time, and the Hygge look is a refined take. It pulls elementary cues from traditional farmhouse style but has shakerinspired elements mixed in and is done with a slightly modern twist. It can make a larger space like the kitchen feel welcoming, open, carefully curated and warm.
Modern Boho
Boho is a natureloving and free-spirited style connected to earthy and botanical elements. From handmade decor to vintage metallic finishes, this style reimagines the past and elevates everyday spaces like bathrooms into personal retreats designed with wellness in mind.
WAYNE BARTLEY
Pastel Wabi-Sabi Leaning into the modern sentiment of “less is more,” this style reflects a naturally minimalist design aesthetic and showcases color coordination with mood-boosting hues and joyful color. Perfect for nurseries and other spaces that should be bright and welcoming, pieces with pared-back, welcoming shapes and silhouettes that allow quality natural materials to shine are perfect for decorating the room.

Exploring Color Pairings If a concept like color drenching – using one color from the baseboards to the ceiling and decor – isn’t what you’re envisioning, pairing a gentle and airy color like Renew Blue with other hues may be just the trick to create the space of your dreams. Consider these popular Valspar pairing options:
Perfect Backdrop: The familiar, natural tone of beige has returned strong, balancing warm and cool shades to create comforting spaces that harmonize well with various design styles. Dusk in the Valley: A barely-there, grayed pastel that is soothing to the senses, even amid constant changes. Layering pale tints in various materials can create a sense of calm and relaxation.
Personalized Advice for Your Space If you’re unsure where to begin your color search – or need advice on color matching, building your painting confidence or troubleshooting complicated projects – the experts at Valspar offer free virtual advice. Simply provide details about your space, lighting and style preferences using the questionnaire at valspar.com/en/color-consultation and by uploading photos of your space and any inspiration to receive personalized recommendations directly to your account.

Self-Care for Sick Days
Navigate Cough, Cold and Flu Season Like a Pro Cooler weather inevitably means cough, cold and flu season isn’t far behind. Now is the time to take precautions and set yourself up with healthy habits. “As much as we try, avoiding viruses, bacteria and germs to prevent getting sick can be a challenge,” Dr. Tim Tiutan, MD, said. “However, being prepared with the right remedies, listening to your body and its symptoms and remaining diligent with a healthy routine is just as important as treating symptoms head on.” To help navigate this cough, cold and flu season, consider these tips from Tiutan and the experts at Mucinex. Prepare and Prevent You won’t find a foolproof way to keep germs away, but you can lessen your chances of getting sick and make sure you’re equipped to weather an illness. Practice healthy habits. Keeping your body in prime condition can help ensure you’re in the best condition possible to fight back when germs attack. That means keeping up with exercise and ensuring you’re getting enough vitamins and nutrients through a well-balanced diet. Get a flu shot. The flu shot gives your body a head start in fighting back against flu bugs. If you’re exposed to the flu after receiving the shot, your body can immediately go on the offensive against those germs. You may not stay completely symptom-free, but you’re more likely to experience a mild case and be back on your feet quicker. Restock the medicine cabinet. The start of cough, cold and flu season is an ideal time to dig through your medicine cabinet. Start by discarding any medications that are out of date and make a list of anything you need to replenish. Be sure to include pain relievers, fever reducers, decongestants, antihistamines and cough syrups to fight symptoms. It’s also a good time to restock items like tissues, cough drops, hand sanitizer and anti-bacterial soap. 20 | WeAreProsper.com
Treat Symptoms Although the flu can hit fast, it’s often hard to tell at first whether your symptoms are due to a simple cough, cold or a case of the flu. Either way, managing symptoms like a cough can bring relief and help you keep comfortable and get plenty of rest. Give your body time to heal. Sleep plays an important role in your overall health, especially when you’re under the weather. On average, you need 7-9 hours each night to give your body enough time to fully recharge. When you’re sick, you likely need even more, and it’s a good idea to dial back your activity level, too. Pushing your physical limits often only delays your recovery time. Take medications as directed. Nagging symptoms can often keep you from getting the sleep you need. One way to give your body the break it needs is to effectively manage symptoms. A hacking cough is a common symptom that can be painful and disrupt your sleep. Consider an option like Mucinex DM 12-Hour, a cough suppresent which relieves chest congestion and thins and loosens mucus, giving you an extended reprieve. It’s clinically proven to last up to 12 hours, provides relief for chest congestion and makes coughs more productive. Prevent Spread Getting sick may be beyond your complete control, but you can take steps to protect others from germs when you’re feeling ill. Keep germs to yourself. Washing your hands often, covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and sneezing into your elbow if you don’t have a tissue are simple ways you can limit the spread of germs, especially within your home or workspace. Frequently wiping down high-touch surfaces can also help reduce the spread of germs. Skip socializing. If you’re feeling under the weather, stay home. Even a mild cold can easily spread, and an illness that affects you mildly could cause significant distress for someone else. Avoid unnecessary errands and take advantage of services like curbside pickup if you must get out. Also check with your employer about working remotely if you’re up to it.
Find more ways to stay healthy and limit symptoms by visiting Mucinex.com.
Cold vs. Flu There’s a lot of overlap between cold and flu symptoms, so it can be tricky to figure out whether the bug you’re fighting is a cold or influenza and how to tackle it.
Now Open in Celina!
While both the common cold and the flu are respiratory illnesses, they are not caused by the same viruses. Although colds are inconvenient, they are far less likely to develop into anything more serious, as the flu can.
MATTHEW BARROWS, MD What is a Cold? Generally, colds are milder than the flu, and more likely to cause runny or stuffy noses (while the flu can cause stuffy or runny noses, it’s less likely to do so). You won’t feel good, but you’ll probably be able to do some or all of your daily tasks. The flu typically hits harder, making it difficult to go to work or follow your usual routine. What is the Flu? The flu often feels worse than a cold; you might experience the same symptoms but amplified. The flu comes with more pain and fever than a cold. Common flu symptoms include sore throat, chills, fever, runny or stuffy nose, muscle fatigue or aches and headaches. The flu can also develop into more serious conditions and complications, making it more dangerous than the average cold. While the common cold is rarely serious, the flu can be dangerous for young children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems.

Treating a Cold vs. Flu You can be vaccinated against the flu. There is no such vaccine for common colds. If your provider recommends it, getting the flu vaccine each year can go a long way toward preventing sickness.

Whether you have a cold or the flu, symptom relief is largely the same. Get plenty of rest, drink plenty of fluids and take over-the-counter medicines to relieve symptoms. Stay home to avoid spreading sickness. Wash your hands frequently and cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Watch for shortness of breath, chest or abdomen pain, confusion, sudden dizziness, severe or persistent vomiting and flu symptoms that improve then return with fever and worse cough. If you experience any of these symptoms, consult a doctor.
