CISD News
BACK TO SCHOOL Celina ISD
m Fro sk e D e th ick R f o ters s a DeM
Welcome Back for the 2016-2017 school year. As we wish good luck to those that will now call universities and/or colleges around the United States home, the CISD Administration Team hit the ground running, creating a framework to empower not only our teachers, but our students as well. Celina ISD is “The Destination District!” Our students are a part of a premier district known for innovation and educational excellence, where community, core values and the preservation of our traditions is first and foremost. The City of Celina is expecting incredible future growth, which greatly impacts our district. Celina ISD is creating a roadmap to successfully navigate the changes that will accompany this growth. Tennessee Lady Volunteers Basketball Coach Pat Summitt once said, “the willingness to experiment with change may be the most essential ingredient to success at anything.” These words resonate with me because we are not just experimenting with change, we are living it on a daily basis. Due to the predictions of impending growth, we have made some changes to our infrastructure, by placing emphasis on areas that will be impacted as more families make Celina ISD their Destination District. Former Celina Junior High Principal, Mr. John Mathews has accepted the new position of Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services. His primary responsibilities will be to oversee Human Resources and to direct and manage district staff and student instructional services. Mr. Bill Hemby, former Celina High School Principal will assume the duties and responsibilities of Assistant Superintendent of Maintenance and Operations for the district. Responsibilities will include monitoring the district work order process, assist with district security and emergency operations, and will be a liaison to the city and community officials. Mrs. Lori Sitzes, Secondary Curriculum Director will assume additional responsibilities with her new title of Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Technology. New responsibilities will be to oversee the Technology Department to include evaluation of curriculum and instructional technology practices. With the administration vacancies at Celina Middle, Junior High and High School campuses, we are excited to welcome Mr. Russell McDaniel who will serve as the Celina Middle School and Celina Junior High Principal for the 20162017 school year. Serving as the new Celina High School Principal Mr. Dave Wilson, is not a newcomer to our district, but has served as CHS Assistant Principal for many years. Celina Elementary Principal Mrs. Starla Martin and Celina Intermediate Principal Mrs. Stacy Ceci will continue to lead their campuses to academic excellence and are very excited to get the year started. For those of you who are new to our district, take a moment to read the biographies of our four campus leaders as they share their thoughts about our community and their individual campuses. As Celina ISD Superintendent of Schools, our administrators and teachers will be “Paving The Way To The Future,” with an emphasis on strong academics and an extracurricular program that offers a multitude of opportunities for all students to excel. The road to success is not an easy one, but with our parents and teachers providing the teamwork needed to overcome challenges along the way, the destination to success is within reach!

What do you like best about your campus? I absolutely love my teachers, staff and the students that grace our hallways. I know how lucky I am to not only work in the best district, but one that fills our classrooms with the most talented of teachers that create the brightest and gifted students.
What do you like best about your campus? As principal of the very campus that I started my teaching career in Celina back in 2005, it is such a privilege to come full circle. I am very excited to be surrounded by a wonderful and amazing group of teachers and staff that are supportive, energetic and go over and beyond for their students.

5 Tricks for a Chore-Free Weekend
When thinking about errands, check-lists and even downtime, every busy person wishes there were more hours in the day. When tight on time, chores have a way of piling up and spilling into free time. With the right routine, however, day-to-day tasks can be tackled throughout the week, paving the way to a chore-free weekend, which means more time for the fun stuff. “I am a firm believer that the weekend is meant for relaxation,” said Becky Rapinchuk, cleaning expert from Clean Mama and author of “The Organically Clean Home.” “My secret to a chore-free weekend? Address items on your to-do list day by day, rather than tackling the entire house at once.” Along with the right tools, Rapinchuk recommends carving out 30 minutes each weekday for an easy five-day cleaning routine made up of the following simple tips and tricks: • Monday: Tackle the most hated space to clean – the bathroom – on Monday so you’re not dreading the chore all week long. To start, grab a dish wand and load it up with your favorite tile cleaner to scrub the shower grout. Once you’re done, clear the countertop, wipe down the sink, and give the toilet a deep cleaning. Spritz a light scent on towels or the shower curtain to leave the space smelling fresh on your way out. • Tuesday: Dishes not coming out clean from the dishwasher? Run the water in your kitchen sink until it’s hot and then start the dishwasher. This will pump hot water throughout the washer’s cycle, as opposed to starting off cold and then turning warm. The hot water not only does a better job of cleaning your dishes, but it is also critical in killing any germs living on glassware and flatware. • Wednesday: Multi-purpose tools are key when looking to save time. The Scotch-Brite Scrubbing Dish Cloth, for example, features everything you
12
CelinaMagazine.com | August 2016
love about your dish cloth – absorbency and versatility – plus scrubbing dots on one side that power through stuck-on messes on cookware, glassware and counters without scratching. When you’re done, the cloth rinses clean and dries quickly, ready for any kitchen mishaps during your weekend festivities. • Thursday: Ease into the weekend by dusting surfaces in your home, including televisions, shelving, dressers and nightstands. A little known trick for surfaces such as rugs or lampshades that dust likes to cling to? Use a lint roller with strong adhesive. • Friday: Round out the week with a focus on floors by sweeping, vacuuming and mopping the most used rooms. If you find a new stain on the carpet, blot it up with club soda and a heavy-duty scrub sponge. If it remains, add a drop of dish soap and blot it back into the stain, but don’t rub. Rinse with cool water and continue to blot as the sponge absorbs the solution while not pilling or ruining the fabric. After a few minutes, the carpet should be dry and the stain should be gone. NEW (SCHOOL) YEAR, NEW YOU Make family resolutions that stick
Forget Jan. 1. Parents know the real new year begins when you can smell the fresh pink erasers and hear the clatter of brand new pencils on still-smooth notebook covers. Even if you don’t have kids in school, the end of summer and the beginning of fall is a great time to reassess, realign, hit the restart button and make resolutions that will help carry your family smoothly through until next summer – or at least until the holidays. Here are some tips from parents about resolutions they’ve made for the coming school year:
Learn to love mornings My Life and Kids blogger Anna Luther said she used to hate mornings. “It was a disaster,” she said. “There was a lot of yelling, a lot of missing socks, a lot of arguments about eating a good breakfast – it was just not the way to start a productive, happy day.” Luther decided to turn the first – and worst – hour of her day into one of the best by waking up earlier, exercising and turning on music. Luther also changed the way she looked at breakfast. “It doesn’t have to be from scratch,” she said, “but it does have to have protein – and be fast. We love frozen breakfast burritos, for example.”
Empower the kids Luther said that another thing that made mornings exhausting was that she tried to do everything herself, from finding socks and brushing hair to heating up healthy breakfasts. But kids are eager to help, she said. Just like
18

adults, they feel empowered when they can do things for themselves. Luther decided to empower her kids and simplify her life at the same time by creating “Get Ready Buckets,” which hold everything they need to get moving in the morning, from hairbrushes to socks. That same message of empowerment can simplify and improve other stressful times of day. Do the kids walk in the door hungry and cranky and leave you feeling the same way? Stock the freezer with hearty snacks, such as El Monterey Taquitos, that kids can heat up on their own.
Appreciate others Blogger Kristyn Merkley of Lil’ Luna, has resolved to show the teachers in her life how much she and her family appreciate them. “Our teachers put so much time and effort into their jobs,” Merkley said, “and we’re so grateful for that.” While she usually gives teachers a gift card at the end of the year, she doesn’t wait until then to send notes and emails with a simple, “Thank you.” She also makes sure to say thanks in person – and in front of her kids.
Make fun a priority There are plenty of must-dos on your list every day, but is fun one of them? Merkley said it should be, and she’s making family fun a resolution this school year. She collects activities on her blog that kids and adults can do together and plans family fun nights around them. “When we laugh and make things and learn things together,” she said, “we’re making memories. I want my kids to remember their childhoods as more than just getting to school on time and cleaning their rooms.”

Kristy Denney, of the Boys Ahoy blog, is raising three wild boys, as she calls them. But even the wildest of kids wants to know that you’re on their team – and they’re on yours. Denney and her husband, Brett, chose a family motto for the school year so that everyone on their family team knows what they’re working toward.

As their motto, the Denneys chose, “Work hard and be nice.” It’s simple, succinct and sums up what they want for their family.
Fuel up with real food Kids have to eat, and most insist on eating three or more times a day. Denney said she loves to cook from scratch, but she doesn’t want time in the kitchen to keep her away from her family. So, this year, she’s resolving to focus on what’s important: real ingredients. “Sometimes I’ll buy the ingredients myself to cook from scratch and sometimes I’ll look for foods I recognize on the label,” she said. “When I pick up El Monterey Signature Burritos, I see ingredients like fresh-baked tortillas, real cheddar cheese – foods I would buy anyway for my family, so I feel great about that.”

Make snacks work hard Jess Kielman, who writes the blog Mom 4 Real, said that snacking can sometimes be a problem in her house. Kids (and adults) sometimes snack because they’re bored – or just out of habit, so she’s reining in snack time and making snacks work just as hard as meals. “Protein and real food – that’s what I’m going to look for in afternoon snacks,” she said. “Something that fills the kids up and gets them ready to get back out the door and play, or buckle down and do their homework.”
Paint & Body
Cheer on #momwins Kielman said that this year her resolution is to start giving herself a little more credit for her “mom wins,” big or small. “Checking off every last thing on my spring cleaning checklist is a win, for sure,” she said, “but so is a good, smooth morning with my family. So is a sit-down dinner that didn’t stress me out. So is feeling good about what we’re eating. So is every little hug. Those are all #momwins, and I’m going to give myself a little pat on the back for every one.” For more breakfast, snack and dinner ideas to help you keep your family resolutions, visit ElMonterey.com.

In His Presence
A New Beginning... Don’t you love new beginnings? A new start? I know that for thousands of students, parents and teachers in our region, this will be the case as soon as schools such as Prestonwood Christian Academy and school districts throughout North Texas open their doors. Remember what it felt like as a kid to begin a new school year? There was such anticipation and excitement walking in the door of your new classroom and getting to know the teacher and settling in with your new classmates. It was a time of endless possibilities and great expectations. The same can be said about returning to Prestonwood or your church home this fall. Maybe you and your family have attended sporadically over the summer. Well, it’s time to gear up! It’s time to reconnect … to plug in. This is a great time to experience a new beginning. Prestonwood will welcome you with open arms! The church is not an organization that you join—it’s a family to which you belong. And I encourage you, if you do not have a church home and you want to share in the mission of Christ, to come experience Prestonwood. We’re not looking for joiners or just more members; we want you to be a faithful witness for Christ in the power of God’s Spirit and to be a part of our ministry.
“In Him and Him alone we find hope, forgiveness and salvation. He is our new beginning.”

Maybe you’ve never been to church; maybe it’s been a long time since you’ve been to a service; you’ve distanced yourself from your Savior. A new start awaits you. There’s nothing more exciting than when someone who was lost is found; someone who is away from home comes home. The Bible is God’s story of redemption. From cover to cover it is the story of His rescue mission for us; His triumph over sin and death and judgment and hell; and the promise of eternal life to all who believe. As a matter of fact, Scripture is clear as to why Jesus came to earth. He said in Luke 19:10, “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” I pray for a new beginning of obedience to God, repenting of sin, asking Him to cleanse us from sin, restoring our souls, praying the prayer of the psalmist that revival would come; revive us again in the midst of the years. I pray that you draw a circle around your own life and your own place of prayer and say, “Lord, in me, send the fire that I might obey You and do Your will every day.” Endless possibilities and great expectations—we find them in our Lord and Savior. In Him and Him alone we find hope, forgiveness and salvation. He is our new beginning. Dr. Jack Graham is pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church, which has campuses in Prosper and Plano.
