CISD News
From the Desk of Mr. Rick DeMasters Celina ISD Superintendent of Schools Vince Lombardi once said, “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence.” With that said, no school district attains perfection, but I believe that our administrators and teachers work together to design multiple blueprints which our students use to guide their individual paths, giving them the opportunities to not only chase perfection, but a steady platform that allows them to shine above the rest. To recap this past year, students throughout our district caught excellence in many different forms. Academics: Students in grades 2-12 brought home numerous medals, plaques, trophies from the UIL Academic competitions held throughout the year. Both the Elementary (Grades 2-5) and the High School UIL competition placed 2nd against our district schools. BPA, Business Professionals of America Team qualified for State due to scores received on accounting, payroll, and advanced accounting procedures. FCCLA Seniors Maddie Brown and Maria Quiroz took 2nd at State with their presentation on “Promote and Publicize.” This qualified the pair to compete at the national level held this summer. Art: The CHS Art Department transformed CTOWN into an Art Gallery displaying the many works of art created by the talented students in the art program. The Visual Art Department had 20 students compete in the Area North Texas competition and 16 of those students medaled by scoring a perfect “4.” CHS Sophomore Zoe Allard became the first CHS Art student to advance to the state level where she placed 3rd on her photograph entitled, “Yin Yang.” Band: The junior high created a concert band and a symphonic band for the first time this year, giving many students the ability to play and compete. The symphonic band came away with

three straight 1st divisions. The Celina High School band also received 1st division Superior ratings and was named the “Outstanding Band of the Day,” at the final contest of the year. The band sent over 30 students to the State competition either as a soloist or as part of an ensemble. Choir: The Celina Junior High Boys and Girls choirs both took home trophies and superior 1st division ratings at their UIL competition. The CHS High School choir took home excellence ratings in both stage and sight reading. Sixteen choir students competed at District with 2 soloists selected to advance to the State Competition. CHS CTV: The CTV students brought home a total of 9 UIL State Championships this year beating our competitors from much larger school districts. Celina made history this year when Alyssa Brown’s animated short film “Help Wanted,” was named State Champion for all of Class 1A-4A at the UIL Young Filmmakers Festival in Austin, Texas. FFA: Celina FFA students attended over twenty different stock shows and events throughout this past year. The Leadership Development Senior FFA Skills Team qualified for State finishing in 11th place. The Career Development Agronomy Team qualified for State finishing 15th overall. Nine students qualified for the Lone Star FFA degree, which is a State FFA honor. The is the largest number to have ever qualified in Celina. One of our students was the recipient of the American FFA Degree, which is a National honor and is only the 3rd student from Celina to receive this honor. Theatre: The Junior High One Act Play took home 3rd place, which was quite an honor given the talent displayed in our division. Celina High School One Act Play was selected to advance at the UIL District competition to compete at the Regional level. Many of our students brought home awards from each competition including CHS Emmeline Gibbs Outstanding Actress award.
Athletics: The Celina Football Team competed in the State Championship held in December at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. We had a great crowd, but the game did not go our way. The coaches and the team are ready to begin their drive to another state championship. We have had numerous signings at the high school for those students who will be continuing their athletic careers on the college level. Those students will be paying baseball, football, and softball for their college teams. Cambry Lohmann was selected to cheer for the University of Texas at Austin next year. CHS Junior Andre Norman and Senior Lauren Schultz represented Celina at the UIL State Track meet in Austin. Lauren signed with West Point to further her goals of throwing shot, discus, and javelin. This was an inaugural year for the CHS Girls Soccer Team. CHS Junior Haley Berg was named the MVP of District 5-4A and was the Dallas Morning News “Newcomer of the Year.” She has been invited to compete for a spot on the women’s national soccer team and was the only player selected from Texas. CHS Volleyball, Basketball, Baseball and Softball Teams all made play-offs this year. The following CHS Juniors made statements in their individual sports. Belin Clemens represented Celina High School at the UIL Regional Swimming competition and CHS Golfer Annabelle Leigh Terzis qualified for the UIL Regional Golf Tournament. Bayden Roberts has qualified for the State Rodeo Championship to be held in Abilene this summer. Our students are given a strong platform in which to claim excellence due to the guidance and positive environment created by our faculty and staff throughout our campuses. They understand that excellence is not just about chasing perfection, but it is connected to preparation, action, dedication, and the ability to rise above failure. Vince Lombardi felt that perfection could not be attained but then again, he never had the privilege of meeting any of the amazing students that make up Celina ISD. With that knowledge, his perspective on perfection might have taken on a new meaning!

Business Profile
Goetz Realty & Development is comprised of experienced, knowledgeable professionals with over 50 years’ experience in North Texas Real Estate, which includes senior transaction coordinator Sandy Russell. Russell comes from Keller Williams North Country as the Market Center Administrator for over 125 real estate agents. Goetz is local, family owned and committed to excellence in everything they do. “Our clients aren’t just another commission check, they’re our neighbors and our friends”, as quoted by Jon Goetz. Specialties include residential, land and ranch properties focused in the areas North of HWY 380, primarily along the “Golden Corridor” of Preston Road and the Dallas North Tollway. Goetz Realty also develops their own land into functional acreage lots for families looking for that special place to call home. Goetz Realty is committed to giving back to the community and truly takes this to heart. A percentage of each transaction is given back to the scholarship fund of each school district where property is sold - with a goal of $5,000 per district. This is a commitment from both the owner, Jon Goetz, and his dedicated broker, Frank D. Cannon. Jon began his real estate career in 2002 as a mortgage broker with AJ Capital. After the
financial collapse he switched gears and earned his Texas real estate license in 2007 selling commercial properties with Marcus & Millichap. Slow market conditions coupled with tighter financial markets led Jon to a Field Engineer position with the Beck Group in 2010 in which he was an integral part of overseeing the construction of The Hope Center in Plano ($110M) and the new Gymnasium at the Episcopal School of Dallas ($75M) Jon began buying various tracts of land near Gunter in 2012 which has undoubtedly led him into land development. With interest in over 1500 acres of prime North Texas real estate, Goetz Realty & Development is poised for the tremendous growth our area is experiencing not only today but for many years to come. Originally from Plano, TX, Jon now resides in Gunter with his wife Natalie and their 3 young children. Jon is a veteran of the Marine Corps and is active in the community as the Vice President of the Economic Development Corporation for the city of Gunter as well as a youth baseball coach. Jon’s broker, Frank, was born in the Ellis County town of Italy and finished high school helping the Gladiators win their first district football championship in 23 yrs. Frank furthered his education at Navarro Jr. College in Corsicana. His education was placed on hold for a couple of years while Frank joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Frank enjoyed his 2 years of service except for the time spent as a machine gunner in Viet Nam. Frank attained the rank of Sergeant E-5 during his 2 years of service. After his stint in
the Marines, Frank continued his education at North Texas State University (now UNT) and earned a degree in education and political science. Frank had many successful years in corporate America with companies such as NCR, Sperry Univac and Sun Microsystems. Due to travel requirements of his jobs, Frank traded corporate America for an insurance and financial services practice and again had a successful track record. Frank was licensed for real estate in the mideighties and enjoyed learning and working with Dan Christie at Collin Co. Land Co. He also has spent time under the tutelage of Billy Herrin, one of the most respected real estate brokers in north Texas. Frank earned his real estate broker’s license several years ago and is now the designated broker for Goetz Realty and Development in Gunter, Texas. With Frank’s experience in customer satisfaction and the real estate coaching of two of the premier brokers in north Texas, Frank is perfectly positioned to help lead Goetz Realty and Development for years to come. Goetz Realty and Development is truly our areas’ trusted real estate professional team. Contact them today with any of your residential, commercial, land and/or ranch property desires and to inquire about exclusive acreage listings. Top 10 Ways to Stop the
Learning shouldn’t stop just because school is out. In fact, stepping too far away from the books can result in a learning loss. However, research has shown that encouraging kids to read just six books, or 20 minutes a day, over the summer can help prevent the summer slide.
“Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty, but rather as a gift that emphasizes the fun of opening a new book and celebrating the satisfaction that comes from reading another story,” said DiCamillo, who is also the 2016-17 Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Program literary partner.
The key is finding ways to make reading fun, combining education and entertainment for an activity kids can truly enjoy, said Kate DiCamillo, a two-time Newbery Medal Award-winning author and the 2016 Collaborative Summer Library Program National Summer Reading Champion.
Summer schedules can get busy, but with a little creativity it’s actually quite easy to fit in those 20 minutes a day, even when you have other activities planned.
18
CelinaMagazine.com | June 2016
“Summer Slide” 1. Take a book. The best way to get your kids reading is to have books available, so take them with you, whether it’s in the car, at the beach or waiting at the doctor’s office.
2. Summer recharge. Plan ahead for a fun reading-related trip midway through the summer to reignite the love of books and reward kids for reading. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy; the trip could simply be camping like a character in a favorite book.
3.
Explore hobbies. Reading is extra fun when the subject matter involves your favorite things. Look for books that match your kids’ personal interests, such as dinosaurs or gymnastics.
4.
Magazine madness. Plenty of popular kids magazines can be delivered to your home for an exciting surprise in the mailbox that makes an excellent reason to flip it open and start reading.

5. Road trip reading. A long car ride is the perfect opportunity for the whole family to enjoy an audiobook together. You can discuss the story over lunch breaks and fuel stops to engage even further with the book.
6. Pen pals. Work with other parents to set up pen pals for the summer
and have kids write letters back and forth to practice their reading and writing skills.
7. Act it out. Encourage kids to gather some neighborhood friends and
create a play based on a favorite book. This helps kids understand the characters and story lines by bringing them to life.
8. Take direction. Ask kids to read the directions for a classic summer
project, like setting up a tent or making a snack for a picnic. Whether they are directing you or doing it themselves, reading and understanding directions builds important skills.
~ Where a handshake still matters ~ EST 1994
9. Head to the library. Most libraries offer fun and interactive summer
reading programs for kids that include incentives, activities and structure to help get kids excited about reading all summer long.
10.
Tap into tech time. If you’ve committed to limiting screen time for the summer, consider a compromise that lets kids use devices for productive activities, such as reading e-books. The sooner you start a habit of reading every day, the better your child will be prepared when school – and the annual BOOK IT! Program – kicks off again. The program, available to kindergarten through sixth-grade students, runs from October through March each year and motivates students to read by rewarding them for their reading accomplishments with recognition and pizza. Learn more about the program and find more summer reading tips and activities at bookitprogram.com.

In His Presence
The Necessity of Christ The contingency of our existence declares the providence of God. Which one of us will grasp our next breath? Who will produce global photosynthesis and provide the next meal? Who will maintain our proper distance from the sun? We are contingent beings, totally dependent upon God’s merciful provision for our being. Acts 17:25 says, “God gives to all life, breath, and all things” and verse 28, “in Him we live and move and have our being.” Thomas Aquinas rightly noticed that the contingency of our existence cries out the necessity of God’s existence. I would add that it also reveals to us God’s common grace. He is gracious to send the rain upon the just and the unjust. He is benevolent to grant us the ability to enjoy love, kindness, and beauty. It would be logically absurd to deny the necessary existence of God, but I do not wish only to say that God exists. The cry of the human heart does not stop there. We need more. Who will make God personal to us? Who will comfort us in our times of sorrow? Who will rescue us from the trouble sin delivers? The Bible speaks without equivocation to these questions and so much more. For Colossians 2:9 tells us, “For in Christ dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” and John 1:14 says, “And the Word (Christ, who is divine) became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” It does not require any great leap of faith to believe that God exists. The eternally necessary question is this, “Will you receive His grace and truth which comes only in the person of Jesus Christ?” By Richmond Goolsby, Elder Grace Baptist Fellowship
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” - John1:14
