Welcome to the first issue of CELINA Magazine, a monthly publication for and about the people, schools, organizations and businesses of Celina, Texas! We would like to introduce ourselves to the Celina community. Our family lives in Prosper and we have been publishing Live & PROSPER Magazine and serving the Prosper community for two years now. During these last two years, we have had multiple requests from Celina residents, organizations and businesses to expand, and offer Celina its own magazine. Based upon those requests, we are happy to bring you the premier issue of CELINA Magazine!

Our philosophy for our publications is actually fairly simple…we choose to be the positive voice of the community, and work hard to promote the wonderful people that live, attend school and work here. We aren’t a tabloid, and we refuse to be an “ad magazine”. We will bring you upbeat, heart-warming articles each month about Celina. Every city has its own personality, and we want to portray Celina’s in the best way we can!
Production / Design
As we grow CELINA Magazine, we look to the schools, the city, and the residents to assist us in our article ideas. Please reach out to us when you know of an impending event, a great human interest story or something exciting that is going on at school. The people are the heartbeat of any city, and this is Celina’s magazine…we want to tell your story. You will also see us around at various events capturing photographs, but please feel free to send us your own to use too! We are happy to share on our Facebook page, website or in the magazine anytime we can. We also have a Celina event calendar on our website, so please let us know if you have something to add!

Celina Main Street and the Historic Downtown Square
Downtown Celina is an Entertainment Destination that Offers Something for Everyone
E
veryone has ideas of how a historic downtown square should look and feel. Store fronts made of old but sturdy brick with tall iron-framed windows. The familiar sound of a bell jingling as you enter through a heavy wooden door. Maybe hardwood floors that creak when you walk in just the right spot, and people who wave because it is the neighborly thing to do. Downtown Celina stylishly offers all of these things plus a piece of this community’s heritage with a side of new amenities and fun entertainment. The Celina Main Street program strives to position downtown as the vibrant hub of the community by offering fun and free special events in a pedestrian and family friendly environment. For instance, Celina Main Street proudly hosts the upcoming Community Movie Night where attendees can enjoy a full day on the square on the 1st Saturday of the month (May-September) followed by a family friendly movie shown on a giant inflatable screen. Take in the shops and restaurants for a few hours then head over to the grassy area on the square to get a great spot for the show and visit with your friends and neighbors. Bring a comfy chair or blanket to stretch out and enjoy the show under the stars…this event is a long-lasting, memory making, family fun and great date night kind of event. Celina Main Street also partners with local organizations like the City of Celina, the Celina Chamber of Commerce, area churches and non-profits to cohost other events. This month, Celina Main Street joins with One Voice and the City of Celina to host The Big Hunt, a community Easter egg hunt on April 19 from 10:00-11:30am at the Old Celina Park. Celina Main Street is also excited to partner with Celina Newcomers & Friends to host a Farmer’s Market where shoppers will find locally grown produce and crafted goods (begins Friday, June 6 with other dates through mid-August). Celina Main Street also actively works with the Chamber of Commerce for the greatly anticipated Celina Balloon Festival held each September. Local merchants, Celina Main Street, and C.A.R.E. are also partnering again to offer another Christmas Gift Tour in December. Only 100 tickets were sold for last year’s gift tour which received rave reviews, so buy tickets as soon as they are made available.

Celina Main Street also works with local building owners and businesses to revitalize store fronts and further beautify downtown. Downtown visitors have enjoyed such recent updates to Papa Gallo’s, Sunny Paige, Willow House, Sweet P’s Bakery, and several others. The buildings in downtown Celina are wonderfully historic treasures, the new pavilion is a very welcome addition, and certainly Celina enjoys a handsome downtown area. It is the people of Celina that make the historic downtown square vibrant and exciting…the patrons, merchants, restaurateurs, Sunday walkers and the like who make downtown what it is. Celina Main Street, its sponsors, community leaders, and volunteers are proud to work tirelessly to provide a beautiful backdrop to YOUR life. See you around downtown!

C
ongratulations to the Celina High School LadyKats on a very successful basketball season! Although the way the season ended was unexpected, and a bit confusing, this team had an overall record of 23-5. We asked Varsity Head Coach Jordan Davis these questions about the 2013-2014 season, and you can see from her responses how much she cares for these young ladies not only on the court, but off as well. CELINA Magazine would like to thank Coach Davis for all of her assistance and cooperation, and we look forward to watching this team triumph next season! C-Magazine: How long have you been coaching at Celina High School? Coach Davis: I have been coaching at Celina for 7 years now and this is my 6th year as the girls basketball head coach.
C-Magazine: Do you have any seniors moving on to play at the next level, and what does your leadership for next season look like? Coach Davis: We had 4 seniors on our team this year. Sarah Cantu is going to play basketball for the Air Force Academy. I was very pleased with this senior class and the leadership capabilities they showed on and off the court. They were enthusiastic and such hard workers. They wanted to get better every day. They will be leaving some big shoes for our current junior class to fill. We will have 5 seniors next year and I’ll be looking for the same type of leadership and enthusiasm that this year’s senior class displayed.
2013-14 LadyCats
C-Magazine: What is your favorite memory of this season, and why? Coach Davis: It’s hard to think of just one favorite memory of this season. When I think of this season, of course, my mind goes to the way the season ended at the Regional Finals. It may not be my favorite memory, but it is the most memorable. I was incredibly proud of the fight and resiliency that the girls showed throughout the game. They fought all the way to the end and when the game ended in such a crazy fashion, they showed class and great sportsmanship. C-Magazine: What sets this team apart? Coach Davis: What set this team apart from teams in the past was their char-

acter and personalities. There was so much personality on the team that there was never a dull moment, but they knew when to focus and get their minds right. C-Magazine: Describe the teamwork and personality of this team overall. Coach Davis: Overall this team was very hardworking, focused and very fun to coach. Their personalities made every day a new, exciting day.
C-Magazine: Anything else you may want to add? Coach Davis: This was a very special team this year and the way their season ended will be remembered for a lifetime. For the seniors, it was a hard way to end their career, but the class they displayed was impeccable. For the returning players, the ending is something they need to motivate them day in and day out to help prepare them for next season.

aster is the most important celebration of our faith; it is the very essence of what makes us Christian. Therefore, it is important that we find meaningful ways to celebrate its significance with our children in order to build a deeper level of understanding as they mature in their walk with the Lord. When my children were young in the early 80’s we began making “Holy Week Baskets” at home to celebrate Easter. I began to gather items that represented events from Holy Week . As we added an item, we would talk about it, look up the scriptures and weave them together into the rich timeline tapestry of Holy Week. I noticed how my children’s interest and knowledge grew and deepened as they became engaged in this interactive learning process. It became our Easter tradition…as a family…in our school…and in our church. I saw children, parents and teachers get excited each year and ask “Are we going to make Holy Week Baskets this year?” Let’s look at what can go in your Holy Week Basket…here are some suggestions. Again, select the ones that are age appropriate and add items each year as your children grow in the Lord. As you take each item out, teach your children about the significance of each one. Look up the scripture together as a family or in your classroom. If you put them in a basket, add lots of grass and they make a lovely as well as meaningful centerpiece. Items may include:

Making Meaningful Memories this Easter with Your Children
By Jody Capehart
• donkey and/or palm branch to represent Palm Sunday • 1” piece of towel: washing of feet; symbol of service • unleavened bread and communion cup: to represent the Passover and Last Supper • silver coins to represent Judas’s betrayal (I used play money from the Dollar Store) • cross: made with popsicle sticks • nail: {only with older children please} • rock: placed over the tomb where Jesus was buried • scroll with a mini-gospel such as 1 Corinthians 15: 3-4, or John 3:16 (type the verse, copy, cut into strips, glue popsicle sticks on either side, roll each side to the center and you have a scroll) • 2” black cloth: world turned dark when Jesus was on the cross • 2” purple cloth: temple curtain torn in half when Jesus died • 2” linen cloth: shroud to wrap Jesus’ body • grass: New life when you believe in Jesus • cotton ball: Jesus will return through the clouds to gather all those who believe in Him (share the Gospel!) • Jelly Bean Prayer (You may put the jelly beans in a baggie with a copy of the prayer.)
Jelly Bean Prayer RED is for the blood He gave GREEN is for the grass He made YELLOW is for the sun so bright BLACK is for the dark of night BLUE is for the sky He made is for the GRACE HE gave PURPLE is for His hours of sorrow PINK is for our new tomorrow. A bag full of jelly beans colorful and sweet Is a prayer, is a promise and is a child’s treat. May the Risen Lord bless you this Easter and always! With love for Him, Mrs. Jody Capehart
Bonus! When the children get to 3rd grade, I encourage them to read one of the GOSPEL accounts of Holy Week each year. For example: 3rd Grade: Matthew 4th Grade: Mark 5th Grade: Luke 6th Grade: John Activities to challenge older children: 1. Create a timeline of all the items in their Holy Week basket with corresponding scriptures from each of the gospels. 2. Add items to represent each day of Holy Week. For example, what did Jesus do each day during that week? We tend to know what happened on Sunday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. But often the extraordinary teaching that occurred on Monday and Tuesday gets eclipsed by the profound events of the rest of the week. What was happening on Wednesday? Let your children be “Bible Detectives” and find out! Have the children put items in their baskets as symbols from those teachings. For example: Monday: What could they put in their baskets to represent Jesus’ teaching about the Barren Fig Tree (Mark 11)? Or, what happened when Jesus went to the Temple? Tuesday: The Gospels are filled with the amazing teachings of Jesus from Tuesday. Wednesday: What happened? Check the Gospels!

May I encourage you to take time to find an activity that teaches the profound message of Easter and one you can build upon each year as your children grow older. You may want to bring out your Holy Week Basket from the previous year and review it with your children. A word to the wise: children love repetition when they are young. As they get older, they may begin to become cynical and say “I already know that...” and not want to participate. Remember, this is a good time to invite them to be the helper and/or leader with the younger siblings or students. Or if they are the youngest, I simply say that since the truth of this activity is so important to our faith, it is worth hearing it again. You may suggest that we might learn something new this year as we explore it together. I know I do each time I read the gospels! These meaningful memories become beautiful threads in the tapestry of our children’s spiritual heritage. These windows of opportunities are worth every minute of the investment of our time and energy, as they reap rich dividends… for eternity. April 2014 | CelinaMagazine.com
