CISD News

From the Desk of Mr. Rick DeMasters 2016 Celina ISD Superintendent of Schools During the January board meeting, the members of The Celina ISD School Board accepted the resignation of Celina Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Donny O’Dell and voted to approve my nomination to succeed Mr. O’Dell as your new Superintendent of Schools effective immediately. Though the torch has been passed, Mr. O’Dell will continue to serve the district through June of 2016 as the Interim Assistant Superintendent. For those of you who I have not had the pleasure of meeting, the following is a brief summary that will give you some insight into my background, including my education, employment, and my aspirations for the future of this great district. Early Years – I was born in Lynwood, California, but was raised in Louisville, Kentucky where I attended Valley High and was active in the football, basketball and track programs. College Years – Basketball led me to McMurry University where I graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Education. From there, I enrolled at West Texas A&M University where I earned my Masters in Educational Administration. Personal Life – My wife Kim and I have been blessed with four sons and two granddaughters. Our family loves to be together whether we are golfing, fishing, or just hanging out at the beach. Employment – From 1990-1997, I served as a teacher/coach and Athletic Director for Karnack and Vega Independent School Districts. From 19972002, I entered the Administration ranks being named Assistant High School Principal and later serving in the roles of Elementary and Middle

8

CELINA Magazine

School Principal for Dumas and Shallowater School Districts. In 2006, my family made the move to Van Alstyne where I led the Middle School before being named as the Assistant Superintendent of Schools for the Van Alstyne District. After my youngest son graduated from Van Alstyne in 2011, I accepted the high school principal position at Celina High School, and the following year was named as the Assistant Superintendent of School for Celina ISD. The saying, “Go the extra mile…it’s never crowded,” resonates with me as I look towards the future with this district. We must continue to educate our students to their maximum potential while enticing them to “go that extra mile” creating pathways for personal growth and avenues that will ultimately lead to successful careers. We are also charged to find ways to sustain the culture that has flourished over the years, as we are face our toughest opponent…growth. Over the last twenty-six years, I have served my former districts in different capacities, but with each and every step of this path, I have had the pleasure to work with outstanding men and women that have truly inspired me through their leadership and their undying responsibility to those they serve. During these past four years in Celina, I have continued to be inspired by the great things I see happening throughout our campuses. With the growth and the opportunities that will come to our district in the next few years, I am honored with the privilege bestowed upon me to lead the Celina School District, embracing change while continuing to hold onto the traditions and history that makes every day a great day to be a Celina Bobcat.

Spotlight

Building a true custom home is not just our business, but our mission.

Welcome Home!

Spotlight

Dave R. Williams has announced changes in the management team at his Prosper-based home building company along with the opening of their new model home in the gated, estate-lot community of Christie Farms. In addition, the company has announced it will begin development of the Christie Farms Phase Two home sites in March. Williams also announced formation of the Dave R. Williams Homes Scholarship Foundation, an organization dedicated to identifying and awarding scholarships to area students who have overcome adversity. Gary Castleberry has been appointed to the position of Vice President and General Manager of the firm. “Gary has been with us for more than a decade and his dedication to his job, our customers, his family, and the community has been most impressive,” Williams said. “His performance in his job and his ‘cando’ attitude has not only impressed me, but, more importantly, has impressed our clients.” Castleberry has served as a Construction Manager in the past and has been named twice by Prosper Code Enforcement officials as the town’s ‘Builder of the Year’. “I trust Gary to carry out our core philosophy of quality and fair-dealing,” said Williams. “It is important to have managers who share your values and Gary has demonstrated time and again he will do the right thing at the right time.” Eldon Carter has been promoted from Assistant Construction Manager to Construction Manager and Mike Kleber has joined the firm as a Construction Manager. “For years, Eldon has been on our job sites doing finish up and quality

control work. He has served recently as Gary’s assistant and will now assume responsibility for construction activities on half of the company’s projects,” said Williams. Kleber comes to the company as a former owner of his own firm. “Mike has been my friend and friendly competitor for years, and I am excited to have him bring his talents to our company. I have always admired Mike for his construction knowledge and the quality of the homes he has built over the years,” said Williams. Williams will continue in his role with the company, utilizing his more than 40 years of experience in the residential construction industry in North Texas. “I enjoy my role in guiding what and where we build. I am also involved with each client as they develop their custom floor plans. Our philosophy is every client should know the face that goes along with the name on the sign,” Williams said. “In this environment of nameless and faceless companies claiming to build custom homes, our company stands alone in the way we approach our projects, the way we service our clients, the way we partner with our long-time subcontractors and suppliers, and our reputation for fair dealing.” Other members of the firm include Mark Sena, Sales Manager, Marcelle Johnson, Marketing Manager, Patty DiVeronica, Operations Manager, Cathy Watters, Project Coordinator, and Cheryl Grant, Interior Designer. “The most satisfaction I get is when a client will compliment a member of our staff. It is my barometer of how we are doing, and I get those compliments almost daily. I am very proud of the people who make up this firm,” said Williams. The new model home location is at 4240 San Juan Avenue in Christie March 2016

Farms. “We wanted a model home that represented trends in color and design along with our one-level living with large outdoor living areas, huge garages, and signature engineered walk-up basements. Our philosophy is to build models representative of our standard specifications,” said Williams. “Most builders like to build models with lots of upgrades and disguise their product with elaborate decorating. We are not selling furniture. We are selling homes, and I want our potential clients to judge us on construction - not lipstick. I find most home builders to be very slick marketing operations who happen to build homes. At our core, we are a construction company who does a very good job marketing our product.” The company also said it has reached agreement with Custer Road Equity Group, LP to develop 18 additional acreage lots in Phase Two of Christie Farms. “We will market these home sites in May of this year, and I am truly excited about this tract. I believe it is the most desirable location in all of Prosper for estate home sites,” said Williams. “In conjunction with the development of Phase Two, we will be upgrading the entrance way signage and landscaping to prepare for the summer season.” The company builds custom and speculative homes, primarily in northern Collin County. “Prospective clients believe that we only build in our established neighborhoods, but they are surprised when we tell them that 30 percent of our projects are on properties outside of those neighborhoods.” said Williams. “We will build on your lot or property.” Currently, the company is building four homes for clients they have built for in the past. “I can think of no greater compliment or testimonial for a home builder than repeat business,” said Williams. “It speaks volumes for our relationship building, longevity, and integrity-before- profit culture.” Dave R. Williams Homes also offers architectural design work as part of their process. “We hear constantly that builders require clients to invest in large architectural fees before they get a quote on their home,” said Williams. “We can design and price a custom home in less than two weeks for a design fee of less than $3,000.” The Dave R. Williams Scholarship Foundation will be established this year. The company is committing $20,000 to assist Prosper High School graduates through partnerships with established organizations like the Prosper Ladies Association, the Prosper Rotary Club, and the Cory Ausenbaugh Memorial Scholarship. Williams has supported all of these organizations in the past, but wanted to establish a fund using the experience he gained as a board member and President of the Hendrick Scholarship Foundation. The Hendrick Scholarship Foundation was established to honor the former Superintendent of the Plano Independent School District, Dr. H. Wayne Hendrick upon his retirement. The mission of the foundation is to identify, fund, and mentor students who have fought adversities in their lives and managed to graduate from high school. “One of the greatest thrills of my life was being asked to serve as President of the foundation established for Dr. Hendrick by the Haggard family and other community

leaders in Plano,” said Williams. “I learned so much about the true need for an organization that looks beyond grades and focuses on giving an opportunity to a student who has overcome true adversity and managed to persevere and graduate.” Williams said that he plans to work with the local organizations to expand their scholarships and school district teachers and counselors to help identify those students needing and deserving an opportunity. “I want to see a kid who has battled neglect, homelessness, alcoholism, poverty, or abuse and has the grit to make it through the maze without any support. I want to give that kid the chance and the support to continue an education that may change a family for generations to come,” said Williams. One of the philosophies of the Hendrick Scholarship Foundation is to not only fund a student, but provide a mentor to help the recipient navigate through a complicated post-secondary education. “These kids have been abused and neglected. To give them a check and say ‘good luck’ is not realistic. We need to recruit mentors within the community who will commit to helping our students register, schedule, and keep up with their requirements entering college,” said Williams. “We found that student with effective mentors had a much better success rate and mentors got great satisfaction knowing that they have helped a young person gain the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful and self-supporting.” Williams hopes to expand the foundation to reach students in Prosper and Celina. He hopes the fund will grow with contributions from people in those communities who are looking to contribute to a cause where their funds are being well spent. “As President of the Hendrick Foundation, one of my main focuses was assuring donors that we were good stewards of their funds,” said Williams. “The mentor program also allows us to monitor the student and determine whether to continue the funding of their education on a continuing basis.” For further information on Dave R. Williams Homes, visit their web site at www. drwhomes.com or call Mark Sena at (214) 906-8361 or email at marks@drwhomes. com. The company’s phone number is (972) 346-2015. BOOTS & BLING By Jill Roza

The Celina Association of Renaissance Excellence (C.A.R.E.) invites you to attend this year’s fundraising event entitled “Boots and Bling,” which will be held on Saturday, April 2nd, 2016 at Celina High School. Your morning will be spent with your favorite friends and new acquaintances socializing, shopping and bidding on live and silent auction items to benefit Celina ISD students.

Doors open at 8:30am and the silent auction will begin promptly at 9:00am. Brunch will be served before the live auction and fashion show start. Tickets are $25.00 per person. Invite your friends and fill up a table to add to the fun! For the ladies that are attending and have daughters 12 years of age or older, for the first time the auction is inviting these young ladies to attend with their moms for a morning filled with fun and fashion!

With the help of money donated annually from C.A.R.E. to our campuses, the academic environment of our students is greatly enriched with special programs and/or tools that will enhance their learning both inside and outside of the classroom setting. C.A.R.E. has awarded over $28,000 to support the academic needs on each of our campuses over the last three years. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised for scholarships given to graduating seniors, including over $140,000 being awarded over the last three years alone. These scholarships have helped our students to achieve their goals by furthering their education at colleges and universities throughout the United States.

C.A.R.E. is fully funded by donations and relies on the contributions from businesses and individuals for financial support. As a 501c3 tax-exempt nonprofit organization, there are many ways you can support this year’s fundraising event. Sponsorships start at the $100 level. If you would like to donate an item or cash for the live and/or silent auction, forms can be found on our website, www.celinacares.com, or you can contact Heather Cunningham, Auction Chairperson at (972) 754-5841 for more information.

The Perfect Blend

Blenditarian substitutions make dinnertime delicious

Finding the right daily nutritional balance is no easy feat. Managing sugar, carbohydrate, fat and red meat intake takes serious effort and planning, but transforming your favorite recipes into more nutritious family meals may be easier than you realize. Adopting the blenditarian lifestyle is a simple solution to healthier eating. It involves, simply, blending mushrooms into meat to make every day dishes more healthful and delicious. Adding chopped mushrooms to ground beef at a ratio of at least 25 percent mushrooms can enhance the taste of dishes, deliver an extra serving of vegetables and beneficial nutrients, and trim total calories and fat intake. Any mushroom variety will work. Creminis and portabellas lend rich, earthy flavors to any meal, while white button mushrooms offer a more delicate taste. For the more adventurous eaters, maitake and shiitake varieties bring a bold woodsy taste and meaty texture to the plate. The key to blending is developing the perfect mushroom consistency. For example, if using ground meat for tacos or burgers, chop mushrooms to mimic the familiar crumbled texture, using a knife and cutting board, food processor or vegetable chopper. For stews, halve or quarter mushrooms, or slice them to match strips of meat in fajitas or stir-fry. In His Presence

I recently noticed a young mother in one of our local stores. Her cart was loaded with packages of candy, a bunny costume, boxes of Peeps, and bags of colorful plastic eggs. I instantly knew what she was doing; she was preparing for Easter. The thought crossed my mind, “Is this really the best way to prepare for Easter?” I’m not being a stick in the mud. I have grandchildren, so I know the joy of watching them tear open Easter baskets and hearing them squeal with delight when they find yet another hidden egg, but I also want them to be aware there is a much deeper reason to celebrate. Easter is when we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus wasn’t the first to claim to be the Messiah. There were literally dozens of Messianic movements around the time Jesus walked the earth. In every case, the leader eventually died and everyone went home; game over. Among all of these movements, there was only one that did not fold up after the leader died. Not only did it not die, the movement flourished, sweeping around the world, and is still growing today. What gave Christianity that sort of power? The answer is what we celebrate in this season, the resurrection. When Jesus was raised from the dead after three days, it was proof positive that He had truly conquered death, Hell and the grave. Resurrection means that death is not the end! And since Jesus isn’t dead, people can still encounter him today. The Bible accurately describes the conditions of man without God. Colossians 2:13 pronounces us “…dead in our trespasses and sin…”. But if you’ll keep reading you see the announcement that gives us reason to kick up our heels and party. “God made [us] alive together with Jesus, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by cancelling the record of debt that stood against us…”. The hope of the gospel is that dead things live again. We’re offered this new life by Christ. We enter into simply by simple faith in Him. That news is sweeter than a whole basket full of candy!
