From the Desk of Mr. Rick DeMasters 2016 Celina ISD Superintendent of Schools

T

he month of May represents the end of yet another school year. In just a few short weeks, the CHS Senior Class of 2015-2016 will be walking that walk across the stage signaling the end of their high school careers while at the same time embarking upon a road filled with new experiences, new friends and new professors, that will provide insight and direction towards what they truly want to achieve. It is also a time when we must say goodbye to not only our graduates, but to a man who has poured his heart and soul into the Celina School District. Mr. Donny O’Dell stepped down as the Superintendent of our district in January, citing that after 42 years in education, it was time for him to retire and enjoy time with his wife Kay and their wonderful children and grandchildren. Mr. O’Dell has served this district as a teacher, coach, Assistant Principal, Principal, Assistant Superintendent and for the past few years as the Superintendent of Schools. His approach to leadership has positively impacted many of the students he has served over the years to include a large majority of our current faculty and staff. CJHS Counselor Melanie Jackson has known Mr. O’Dell since her first day of Kindergarten. When asked about his retirement, her eyes begin to fill with tears as she reminisces over the thirty-five years that she has known this man. Her father, and former CISD Superintendent, Perry Morris, hired Mr. O’Dell. Not only was he a coach, but also for many years his family lived right next door to Mrs. Jackson. As a coach, she commented, “He was the kind of coach that led by example and his players looked up to him on and off the field.” Not only was he her teacher, but years later, a counseling position gave her the privilege of working for her former teacher. As a leader, Mrs. Jackson said, “Mr. O’Dell always has the best interests of others in mind and continually inspired all of us to do our best and to strive for excellence.

CHS 2011 graduate Zach Roza remembers Mr. O’Dell taking over the leadership role at the high school during the last semester of his senior year. He commented that, “Mr. O’Dell walked into the building that last semester and to my classmates it felt like he had been there all year. He was always genuinely interested in how the students were doing, which showed the commitment he placed upon himself to take the time to get to know all of us on a personal level.” Zach shared that his classmates witnessed Mr. O’Dell go above and beyond to help a student or resolve a conflict. “We were honored that he was there to hand out our diplomas. His presence made our senior year!” When asked to write a few words about Mr. O’Dell, CISD Transportation Director, Mr. Jerry Moore hands in a typed page starting with the sentence, “I hardly know where to start, when it comes to talking about what this man has meant to me as a friend, colleague and co-worker over the last 40 years.” Mr. Moore remembers watching Mr. O’Dell in the mid 1960’s as a high school athlete who worked hard and was a fierce competitor. “I remember him always striving to be the best he could possibly be, which created the foundation of an exceptional, educational leader who I have had the privilege to work with over the last forty-two years.” The Celina Independent School District will be honoring Mr. Donny O’Dell’s 42 years of Educational Excellence with a “Come and Go” Retirement Reception on June 2nd, 2016 from 1:30pm to 4:30pm at the Celina High School Building located at 3455 N. Preston Road. Colleagues, friends, family, community members, faculty and students are all invited to stop by and wish him well on his retirement. This is a time for all of us to come together to show Mr. O’Dell the huge impact he made while serving our school district. It has been said that there is never enough time to do all the nothing you want to do. I truly believe that Mr. O’Dell will make the most of his retirement time because there are golf courses to be played and lakes to be fished, but more than that there are those precious moments to be shared with grandchildren imparting the wisdom of a lifetime. KEEP TEXAS BEAUTIFUL RECOGNIZES KEEP CELINA BEAUTIFUL In its first year of formation, Keep Celina Beautiful has been recognized in Keep Texas Beautiful’s (KTB) annual Governors Community Achievement Awards (GCAA). For more than two decades, Keep Texas Beautiful, in partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), has awarded the prestigious Governor’s Community Achievement Awards to ten Texas communities with the best grassroots environmental programs in the state each year. The Governor’s Community Achievement Awards annually endows Texas communities with a share of $2,000,000 in landscaping prize money, to be used in the construction of a beautification project within the winning community. The projects are completed on selected state rightsof-way and conform both to the winning city’s aesthetic expectations and the stringent standards of safety, design and maintenance laid out by the Texas Department of Transportation. The competition distributes grant funding from TxDOT across the 10 communities, with the amount based on population size. Celina competes for a grant of $130,000 in the 5,500 – 9,000 population category. “The vision of this dedicated group of volunteers is to work with citizens and local organizations to aggregate community involvement in improving our environments. I see the ongoing work this group undertakes and when they receive Governor’s Community Achievement Award recognition and the entire community benefits from these efforts, it makes me proud and thankful for their commitment.”

CELINA Magazine

-Mayor Sean Terry The almost 400 local KTB affiliate communities’ environmental programs are judged on achievements in seven areas: • Community Leadership and Coordination • Public Awareness • Education • Beautification and Community Improvement • Litter Prevention and Cleanup • Solid Waste Management • Litter Law and Illegal Dumping Enforcement Celina Marketing Director and KTB Board member Terri Ricketts reported that it is extremely rare for a first year program to be selected in the top three recipients in their category. “Having served as a judge for the past 6 years I do not recall seeing a first year program recognized at this level. KUDOS to KCB Executive Director Haley Norris for her leadership and work with a brand new Advisory Board, and to their successful completion of provisional affiliate status. To complete the requirements of provisional affiliate status and to place in the state grant competition as a certified KTB community in the first year is almost unprecedented.” First place winner Cuero’s program was started in 1986 and second place Navasota was started in 2002. Studies show that a focus on litter prevention and beautification has May 2016

positive economic effects on the community, reducing crime rates, and increasing tourism and economic development. Working toward the GCAA brings together various segments of the community, including schoolchildren, adult volunteers and law enforcement, creating a sense of community pride. Program Director Haley Norris reported, “Celina’s entry featured the Celina Garden Club’s Garden Tour, Matt Anderson’s Eagle Scout Sign Restoration Project, Celina Middle School’s Ecology Club with multiple initiatives in recycling, and Celina High School’s Art Club with the KCB logo competition. Without all of these individuals and organizations contributing to keeping Celina beautiful and educating the students and public, this award and status would have been extremely difficult to achieve in our first year as a program. It was through their efforts and projects that we were able to receive this award for our community. For any future projects or ideas any community member, citizen, or organization may have please contact KCB and we would be glad to join forces with you and continue to grow our program through your partnership!” Email Executive Director, Haley Norris at hnorris@celina-tx.gov “Landscape improvements have worked to increase our community’s appeal and help retain our current businesses and attract new businesses. Furthermore, greening of commercial corridors increases community pride and positive perception of the area, drawing customers to the businesses in our city.” -Corbett Howard, Celina Economic Development Director

Pictured on the upper, left-hand page: Keep Celina Beautiful Board members Tawnia King, Donna Delgado, Becky Bender, KCB Director Haley Norris, Board member Julie Morris, Keep Texas Beautiful Board member Terri Ricketts and Susan Davey have checklists and report forms in hand to conduct the annual Community Litter Survey windshield tour. When trying to decide what to get your favorite lady for Mother’s Day this year, look for gifts that allow her to channel her inner foodie, chef or baker. The best gifts are always those that keep on giving. Through Cook for the Cure, a 15-year partnership between KitchenAid and Susan G. Komen, more than $10.7 million has been raised for the fight against breast cancer. In 2016, KitchenAid will donate at least $450,000 to Komen through the program, regardless of sales. The Cook for the Cure product collection, ranging from pink stand mixers and polka dot bowls to pink food choppers, painted plates and hand mixers, is an easy way to give thanks to mom and raise awareness for a cause that benefits so many women. For other gift ideas that help support the cause, visit www.KitchenAid.com and http://CookfortheCure.KitchenAid.com.

Oreo Cream Pie Recipe Courtesy of Lucy’s Celina, TX

The owner of Lucy’s, Moises Casillas, was delighted to share with us the restaurant’s recipe for one of our favorite pies in town! And this one is not often listed on their menu... It’s quite the special treat, and now you can give it a go in the comfort of your own kitchen!

Pie Crust Ingredients •

2 cups chocolate sandwich cookies such as Oreos crushed into somewhat of a powder (approx. 25), reserving the white center of each to be added to the filling ingredients 5 tbsp. melted margarine

Filling Ingredients • • • • •

1/4 cup sour cream 2 1/2 cups chopped chocolate sandwich cookies (approx. 16) 8 oz. cream cheese (room temperature) 1/3 cup white sugar 2 cups vanilla flavored whipped cream

Instructions Pie Crust: Mix together the pie crust ingredients and press into a glass pie shell. Filling: Mix well the cream cheese, sour cream and sugar. Add reserved cookie filling. Next, mix the sweetened cream cheese mixture with the whipped cream until it becomes uniform. Gently mix in the chopped cookies. Finally, spoon the mixture into the glass dish with the molded pie crust. Garnish with whipped cream around the border. Place more chopped cookies and cookie “powder” on the top of the pie. Refridgerate the pie for approximately 2 hours, then enjoy!

Cinco de Mayo in Celina In the city of Celina, the Cinco de Mayo celebration serves to enhance the community spirit, celebrate the diverse cultures in the area, and support students trying to further their educations with scholarships. The main attractions of this Celina festival are the Parade, Scholarship Awards, folkloric dances, cultural entertainment and great food. It is a great time for all ages! The non-profit organization, El Puente de Celina, is dedicated to bridging the diverse cultures within our community through education, celebration and community development. The scholarship criteria are set forth by the scholarship committee and the high school counselors. Requirements for applications are met through various degrees of vetting and essay. The committee chooses those who are not from families of means, but have the heart, desire and intelligence to continue their education in the collegiate arena. Be sure to check out www.CincodeMayoCelina.com for more information about the festivities, scholarships and to plan for next year’s events!

In His Presence

Honor Your Mother Exodus 20:12 New Living Translation (NLT) 12 “Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God is giving you. Honor is pivotal when dealing with our parents and specifically our mothers. Honor in this passage of scripture means to prize highly, to show respect, to glorify and exalt. There are many ways that we can honor our Mothers on this special day. We can cheer her heart tangibly by way of thoughtful gifts, well-written words on a card, or even just our presence. The Mothers in our lives deserve our best. It has been a pleasure in my life to have the mother that I do and in turn to get to watch my beautiful wife mother our two children. The grace with which God gifts a mother is seen in several ways. They love like nobody else, they serve like nobody else, they pray like nobody else, they encourage like nobody else, they cheer like nobody else, they gently instruct like nobody else, and the list goes on and on. Here are some unidentified words that best describe Mother.: Her love outlasts all human love, Her faith endures the conquest’s hardest test; Her grace and patience through a lifetime prove, That she’s a friend, the noblest and best. A Mother truly represents the heart of God. Through a Mother, we see what unconditional love truly is. We see what it means to forgive when a wrong has occurred. We see what true joy is when watching mother celebrate our victories and we learn what grace is when watching mother console us after a failure. Mothers are the heartbeat of the family, no matter if you are parenting alone or not. The mother of the family seems to always be graced with the right thing to say at just the right moment. Just as God has exactly what we need for whatever it is that we face, we can see how this is lived through motherhood. Mothers we thank you and we love you! We would not be the men, women, fathers, mothers, spouses, and friends that we are if it was not for you. I pray that all of our Mothers have a wonderful Mother’s Day. I leave you with this - a Tribute to Mothers:

God made the streams that gurgle down the purple mountainside; He made the gorgeous coloring with which the sunset’s dyed. He made the hills and covered them with glory; and He made The sparkle on the dewdrop and the flecks of light and shade. Then knowing all earth needed was a climax for her charms, He made a little woman with a baby in her arms. He made the arching rainbow that is thrown across the sky. He made the blessed flowers that nod and smile as we pass by. He made the gladsome beauty as she bows with queenly grace. But sweetest of them all, He made the love light in the face That bends above a baby, warding off the world’s alarms That dainty little woman with a baby in her arms. A soft pink wrap embellished with a vine in silken thread, A flimsy, snow-white cap upon a downy little head, A dress ‘twould make the winter drift look dusty by its side, Two cheeks with pure rose-petal tint, two blue eyes wonder wide, And bending o’er—the mother face imbued with heaven’s own charms, God bless the little woman with a baby in her arms. —Author Unknown
