ormer President Ronald Reagan once said, “ Some people live an entire lifetime and wonder if they have ever made a difference in the world. A Veteran doesn’t have that problem.” In honor of all that have served our country, we will be celebrating these brave men and women with special events during the month of November. Celina High School Veteran’s Day Celebration will be held on Thursday, November 10th starting at 10:30am in the CHS gymnasium. A welcome reception with light, breakfast offerings will be held in the Celina High School library beginning at 9:30am prior to the program. Celina High School Principal Dave Wilson started the school year with a dream to have an over the top celebration for Veterans in our community and surrounding cities. He enlisted the help of administrators, faculty, students, and community members to create an event worthy of those we owe our gratitude. We are extremely honored to have as our guest speaker for the program Major General US Air Force Hale Burr. Our Celina High School Band and Varsity Choir will also be performing. If you are in the area,

please join us for the special event. The Celina Middle School campus will be honoring veterans on Friday, November 11th from 8:30 - 9:30am in the campus gymnasium. Students were challenged to create posters that captured the theme, “Honoring our Heroes.” Winners will be announced during the program. Veterans attending the Celina Middle School Veteran’s Day celebration are invited to a reception immediately following the program in the library. Veterans will be treated to a “Living Museum,” presented by students that are a part of the Gifted and Talented program. This is an amazing exhibit that you will not want to miss. Our secondary campuses will be finishing up their district football schedule with our Celina High School Bobcat Football team gearing up for the playoffs. The Cross Country High School State meet will be held on Saturday, November 12th in Round Rock, Texas. The month of November begins our transition

to the basketball court with many tournaments scheduled throughout the month. Our CISD District calendar continues to fill with exciting programs and extracurricular activities throughout the month of November, but I hope that we all can take some time to renew our energies over the Thanksgiving break scheduled to start on Monday, November 21st through Friday, November 25th. May this time be filled with showing gratitude for those that have made a difference in our lives, thankfulness for the blessings that have been bestowed upon us, and appreciation for treasured moments spent with those we love that make our lives complete.

Celina High School Celebrates Veteran’s Day By Jill Joseph Roza

The Celina High School Veteran’s Day celebration will be held on Thursday, November 10th, in the CHS Gymnasium. Veterans and distinguished guests are invited to a welcome reception to include light breakfast offerings in the Celina High School Library starting at 9:30am. The Veteran’s Day program will begin promptly at 10:30am, and will include an invocation from Celina Mayor Sean Terry, recognition of service to all veterans in attendance and we are especially honored to have Major General United States Air Force Hale Burr as the program’s guest speaker. Celina High School Principal Dave Wilson enlisted the help of numerous administrators, faculty, students and parents to orchestrate a grand scale celebration to include an Honor Guard Veterans escort from the CHS Library to the program site. When asked about the program, Mr. Wilson commented, “We owe our freedom to those that fought so bravely to defend our Nation. Many made the ultimate sacrifice in order to protect our freedoms. Our students need to see and experience firsthand the men and women for whom we should show our gratitude. The Celina Band and Varsity Choir will perform during the program. CHS Theatre Director Cindy Baker will deliver a special presentation regarding CHS student fundraisers held over the last few months to benefit “Beds for Vets,” which provides beds for veterans in need. Monies raised will be presented to a representative from Bed Start. Program organizers are asking for your help in supplying pictures of special veterans in your life. Please send their picture, rank, and where they served. Their pictures will be displayed proudly throughout the celebration. We want to extend a special THANK YOU to our sponsors Avex Group, Chris Neidhart/Balfour, El Dorado Chevrolet, FCS Equipment, Celina Masonic Lodge 919, Mogio’s Gourmet Pizza, Rasor Insurance, REMAX and Rex Real Estate.

4th Annual C.A.R.E. Jingle Jog Fun Run Saturday, December 3rd, 2016 by Jill Joseph Roza

Where can you spend some quality time with friends and support the CISD campuses that your children attend? Well, we have the answer! Mark your calendars for the 4th Annual C.A.R.E. Jingle Jog 5K & 10K Fun Run. You say you’re not a runner? Well, the Jingle Jog is for anyone who enjoys being with family and friends in a festive atmosphere right down to your striped socks and Santa hats! Jingle Jog participants can walk, jog, or run in either of the sponsored events and strollers and/or your favorite furry family friends can join in the fun too! The Jingle Jog allows participants to choose from two different courses. The 10K event will start at 9:00am, taking participants through the scenic countryside with plenty of cattle and pasture land to take in along the rolling terrain. The course will make its way back to Celina High School, but not before participants take on some gentle country hillsand valleys. The 5K event will start at 9:15am, taking participants on flat, country roads through a beautiful neighborhood before heading back to Celina High School. This scenic route is perfect for strollers and furry friends to enjoy.

14

CelinaMagazine.com | November 2016

For those that are not feeling the need for speed, there are many opportunities to volunteer on race day. Volunteers must be 17 years old or older to work certain stations during the Jingle Jog event. Volunteer opportunities range from organizing the runners at the start line to dog handler positions that are responsible for knowing the needs of our fourlegged participants to include passing out dog treats as our furry friends cross the finish line. Students that are under the age of 13, can still volunteer to work water stations throughout the race with adult parent/supervision.

We look forward to serving you with a mortgage strategy to make your dream of home ownership come true!

C.A.R.E, which stands for the Celina Association of Renaissance Excellence can also be described as an Educational Foundation that supports and promotes student achievement. Founded in 1992, by former Celina teacher Jan Miller, the C.A.R.E.organization is supported annually by the contributions received from businesses, friends, and families throughout our community. Funds donated to C.A.R.E. are distributed annually to each of our campuses to be used to strengthen and improve the academic achievement of our students. Celina High School 2016-2017 Seniors who are awarded a C.A.R.E. scholarship in the spring will receive funds to be used towards their education at colleges and universities around the world. Donations from C.A.R.E. help fund programs that help our students succeed in the classroom. The C.A.R.E. Foundation just awarded their largest donation yet of $4,000.00 to each of our campuses. CISD Campus Counselors are working with their faculty to ensure that this wonderful donation is spent to enrich the academic environment of the students that attend Celina Schools. These funds would not have been possible without the private donations made to the organization. You can find C.A.R.E. membership forms on their website and your $20.00 membership fee is tax deductible. Funds are also collected through the amazing community support and participation in C.A.R.E.’s annual fundraising events, such as the Jingle Jog and the Ladies Brunch and Auction to be held in the Spring of 2017. Registration is now open on the C.A.R.E. website. For more information regarding race signups and entry fees, go to www.CelinaCares.com . Registration entry fees will increase after November 12th, so save some money to spend on your holiday outfit and register early. Awards will be given to those whose lavish holiday style outshines the rest and for the first time, a trophy will be awarded to the largest team that registers this year! Just remember that a 12-minute mile and a 7-minute mile is still a “Jingle Mile!” Let’s Jingle All The Way To Excellence!

In Good Taste

While the turkey typically receives all the attention at holiday gatherings, rounding out your meal with the perfect snacks, sides and desserts is the key to a successful feast. Start your guests off with NYC-Style Pita Chips with Herbed Ricotta and Arugula to keep big appetites at bay then serve Slow Cooker Mashed Sweet Potatoes with Marshmallows alongside the main course as the ideal complement to any meat. Finally, top off an evening of delicious food with Caramel Macchiato Ice Cream Pie to send everybody home happy. One Terrific Turkey Centering your holiday meal around a turkey cooked to golden perfection is the ideal way to serve a feast. Without the right preparation and execution, however, your bird could fall short. To ensure your holiday dinner centerpiece lives up to expectations, follow these simple tips, from purchase to plate: 1. Buy the right bird. Finding a turkey that’s just the right size for your expected party is the start to a successful gathering. One common rule of thumb is to buy 1 pound of turkey per person – so for a 10-person meal, purchase a 10-pound turkey. Don’t forget that nearly everyone loves leftovers, so you may consider buying a few pounds more than necessary.

16

CelinaMagazine.com | November 2016

2. Be patient. If you opt for a frozen turkey, don’t rush the thawing process. For larger turkeys, it can take days to defrost properly. 3. Timing is everything. Finding the right amount of time for your turkey to spend in the oven is crucial but not always the easiest thing to do. For an 8-12-pound bird, aim for 2.5-3.5 hours; 12-16 pounds for 3.5-4 hours; 16-20 pounds for 4-4.5 hours, and so on. The key is bringing the turkey to a temperature reading of 170 F. 4. Let it rest. Instead of pulling the turkey out of the oven and immediately carving it, give it a chance to rest for 20-30 minutes, which allows the juices to soak into the meat and moisten it up. Take It Slow This holiday season, use your slow cooker to save time and oven space without sacrificing flavor. Try this recipe for Slow Cooker Mashed Sweet Potatoes with Marshmallows and find more seasonal recipes at McCormick.com.

What do you get when you take one amazing paint, over 300 chairs and an energetic paint retailer with an idea? A Guinness World Record, that’s what! People came from far and wide to participate in the Guinness World Record attempt for the largest furniture refinishing workshop ever! Some brought their own chairs, some had chairs provided by the workshop, but all were ready for a great time. Painters signed in, bought Guinness Record t-shirts and prepared to paint their chairs using Junk Gypsy Paint. Historic Downtown Celina Square was prepared for all the painting fun being featured in the center of town…even Mayor Sean Terry stopped by! There was a buzz of excitement in the air…would enough people show up to break the record? Rules were announced, painters were poised and looking forward to painting, and all systems were a GO! The time was now, the whistle was blown, class instruction began and the paint was unleashed! Over 300 people began refinishing their chair. Record breakers had a choice of one of four Junk Gypsy Paint colors, they wiped the dirt off their chairs and were on their way painting! With easy instruction, quick application and some help from the beautiful Texas sun, the paint dried quickly. That meant that everyone could move on to the next step…distressing! Many buffed their dry paint and were ready for the final whistle blow. Then they heard the news… the World Record for the Largest Furniture Refinishing Class had been accomplished! A very special thanks to the Junk Gypsies, all who came to help break the record, set-up and plan, and of course, Brooklyn Calloway from Brookielynn’s Bungalow, who was the brain child and planner extraordinaire behind this incredible event!

Keeping Kids Active in Cooler Temperatures

A

s the weather gets colder, it can be harder to motivate kids to step away from their computers and devices and get off the couch. However, it’s essential for kids to participate in active play all year round. According to research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity helps build and maintain healthy bones and muscles, promotes psychological well-being and reduces feelings of depression and anxiety.

Plan a nature walk to find inspiration and materials for art. Even though it’s chilly outside, your family can still get out and enjoy the outdoors. Bundle up and take a nature hike with your kids around the neighborhood or at a local, national or state park. Encourage your kids to collect items like pinecones, acorns and leaves as you go and to be on the lookout for wildlife to observe. After the hike, take out art and craft supplies and help them create projects with the items they found.

Sadly, physical activity is becoming less of a priority in kids’ daily routines. A recent survey conducted by Let’s Play, an initiative from Dr Pepper Snapple Group to make active play a daily priority, found that 64 percent of parents said busy schedules stand in the way of more active play for their children, up from 56 percent in 2015.

Plan an indoor scavenger hunt. When a really cold day comes along, send your kids on a fun and active scavenger hunt around the house, searching for items that you can hide in advance. Work together as a family to locate the items or create some friendly family competition to see who can find all the items first. Having the family move around the house with a mission prevents the temptation of staying on the couch in front of the television all day.

Each season brings its own opportunities for play, and fall is no exception. Families can beat the cold weather blues and stay active together by trying some of the following activities:

Join a class or indoor sports team. Whether you are playing a favorite sport or learning a new one, it is always more fun with other people. Longer stretches of active play are often more likely to occur with friends or siblings. Sign your children up for an indoor sport or class they have never tried before, such as gymnastics, rock climbing, swimming or dance. This allows your children to learn something new, meet kids their age and be active for an extended period of time. Volunteer. While giving back is always in season, this time of year is a perfect opportunity to teach kids about giving back to those in need and being grateful for what they have. Sign the whole family up to volunteer at a local soup kitchen, participate in a toy drive for a children’s hospital or help out at an animal rescue shelter. Your children will not only be active, but will also grow emotionally, socially and intellectually as a result. In His Presence

It’s a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord.

There is a slight crispness in the air these days and I see mums starting to bloom on front porches. Homecoming Kings and Queens are being crowned and pumpkins are appearing at the entrances of the grocery stores. Autumn is here and it’s the time of year that the gateway to the holidays opens as we begin to focus towards thanksgiving. We all have things to be thankful for. Even in the midst of economic downturns and political chaos we can still find much to be grateful about. The question comes to us often in this season. Teachers will be pinning colorful lists on bulletin boards revealing the answers to “What are you thankful for?” Family and friends usually top the chart as to what we feel most grateful for. But I’d like for you to consider this… Being grateful and giving thanks are not the same thing. Gratitude is something we feel. Thanksgiving is something we do. It is important for the gratitude in our hearts to be transformed into words that are verbalized and heard. Remember, by presidential proclamation the day is set aside not for “gratefulfeeling” but for “thanks-giving”. For any sort of thanksgiving to happen there are at least two requirements: something to be thankful for and someone to be thankful to. Gratitude blossoms into thanksgiving only as it gets expressed. Who should you be thankful to? Parents? Teachers? The list is endless. But first and foremost it’s time we should vocalize our gratitude to God. The Bible says, “It’s a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord.” It is a wonderful thing when our gratitude finds a voice and is directed heavenward to the source of all blessing. A great example of this is found in 2 Corinthians when we see the Apostle Paul exploding in gratitude for the grace that comes in the gospel of Jesus. “Thanks be to God for His inexpressible gift!” It would be a “good thing” for all of us to take a few moments to call to mind all the things we are grateful for. It would be a “better thing” for us to make the call or say the prayer and vocalize thanksgiving to whom it’s due.
