CISD News
From the Desk of Donny O’Dell, Superintendent of Schools Celina Independent School District The month of December is always filled with a wide variety of programs and activities to keep our students, parents, and faculty busy until the final bell sounds to announce that winter break has begun. It is a time to witness our students excelling athletically, academically and those that are gifted musically as well. Academically, students in grades 2 through 5 will compete against District schools in the UIL Academic Competition to be held in early December. We will compete against students from Argyle, Aubrey, Gainesville, Krum, and Sanger in the areas of art, music, writing, math, oral reading, geography and more. Our students and their coaches

have spent many weeks preparing for competition and have always brought home numerous medals, ribbons and plaques signifying their academic excellence. Musically, the month of December is filled with numerous musical programs that highlight talented students throughout our district. Celina Elementary 1st graders will perform a musical program on December 7th, and Celina Intermediate 3rd graders will have their music program on December 10th. Our Celina Middle and Junior High School band and choir programs will be hosting their Christmas concert on December 8th. The highlight of December is the annual CHS Bobcat Band and Choir Christmas Extravaganza on December 10th that has all in the audience up on their feet with the concert finale of the singing of the Christmas carols. Everyone leaves the auditorium humming his or her favorite tune with an
excitement for the holiday season. Athletically, December also signals that play-offs are in swing for our fall sports. Congratulations to our CHS Lady Cats Volleyball team being named Area Champions. We are very proud of this accomplishment and your dedication to your sport. We must also congratulate Stori Smith, CHS Cross Country athlete for representing the Celina School District at the Cross Country State meet last month. What a fantastic way to end your final season as a Celina Bobcat! And last but not least, our Celina Bobcat Football team was named District Champions and topped off their season being undefeated. Congratulations to our student athletes and their coaches on their accomplishments this season. Aristotle was quoted as saying, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but
a habit.” This quote resonates with what I see happening in our school district not just during the month of December, but on a daily basis. The attainment of excellence is but a habit to our students, faculty and staff and is evident on every level. I cannot think of a better habit to have than that of excellence because where excellence resides, mediocrity cannot survive.

The Road to 2016 BY Mike Foreman
C
elina is on the verge of one the greatest expansion periods in its history. Over the last several years the City Council has invested in infrastructure to enable the development of several parts of town that were not developable without this investment. At the same time, several visionary developers have reinvested in Celina by purchasing large parcels of land to develop into single family subdivisions. With this investment retail will soon be on the heels of this explosion. The City of Celina has prepared for this expansion by extending sewer lines, water lines and by building new roads, repairing existing roads and providing more employees for public safety and customer service. The trend of expansion of our infrastructure has just begun and will continue for years to come. At the same time the City understands the need and responsibility to repair aged infrastructure that has been scheduled for repairs for years. Our goal is to generate revenue via the new growth and the expansion of our boundaries. We will use this to implement our strategic plan to repair existing infrastructure. The past year has seen a substantial amount of Road projects completed. Through a partnership with the Celina Independent School District, Utah and Sunset were repaired from a two lane chip and seal road to a widened concrete road that now better serves the community and Celina
12
December 2015
Elementary. Ash Street was repaired from a bumpy, dangerous asphalt road to a widened concrete throughway that now allows for improved traffic flow from Preston Road to Business 289. The State of Texas has partnered with The City to provide for infrastructure improvements throughout the City. The largest project was the expansion of Preston Road from State Highway 1461 to just North of the Celina High School. This project is 90% complete with the North bound lanes opening just last week. The State of Texas also worked with the City to repair FM 428 and Business 289 with overlays and rehabilitation of dilapidated sections of these roadways. The City’s ongoing partnership with Collin and Denton Counties to repair existing county roads will lead to safer county roads. Celina will also continue to partner with the State to expand infrastructure such as State Highway 1461 in the future. One of our primary goals for our future is the expansion of the Dallas North Tollway through and along our borders with Denton County. We are currently working on an agreement to use 5 Million dollars from the RTR funds for the connection from FM 428 to County Road 8. Denton County is under design for construction of the Tollway from County Road 8 to the Grayson County line.

All of these improvements will allow for the expansion of our development opportunities into the 2020’s. Along with single family construction you will see retail and commercial opportunities arise in Celina. Our goal is to provide you with as many chances to shop locally as possible. What we constantly try to remind our citizens of is that 2 cents of every dollar spent in Celina is returned to Celina for reinvestment in Celina. With the opening of retailers such as CVS and O’Reilly’s Auto Parts our sales tax revenue has increased tremendously. As you can see the City does not develop in a vacuum. We use strategic partnerships with developers, The State of Texas, Collin and Denton Counties, NTTA, North Central Texas Council of Governments and most of all, you our citizens. Local government is the closest form of government to the people that we serve. You have many opportunities to be involved in the governing process. There are opportunities to serve on boards and commissions and also to volunteer on special event committees. Our best ideas come from citizens who choose to share their gifts and talents with our staff. Come be a part of building Celina by sharing your ideas with us. Here’s hoping that you have a great Holiday Season and a Merry Christmas!

W
ith the holidays upon us, homeowners and renters are gearing up to deck the halls in celebration of the season. Just as the year-round decor in your space reflects your personality and unique style, your approach to holiday decorating shouldn’t be any different. Whether your design style is cheery and colorful, natural and rustic or glitzy and glamorous, there are many ways to replace traditional holiday decor and make the space feel more like you. “Bringing your personal style to life doesn’t require an interior designer, and is something you can easily tackle on your own,” said Carrie and Morgan of Ampersand Design Studio. “With a little inspiration and help from damage-free Command Clear Hooks that blend seamlessly into surfaces, you can take your holiday decorating to the next level with ease.”
Gilded Modern – This bold and graphic style combines black, gold and brass tones for a sleek, polished look. Upgrade your mantel by hanging a chic and modern wreath as the focal point and surround it with gallery-style framed quotes and simple paintings over gold garland. The high-contrast patterns and simple color palette transcend holiday and can even be left up through New Year’s Eve. Merry and Bright – Capture the fun of being a kid with a look that contrasts natural tones and plywood against glossy, neon colors. Turn a bare wall into a life-size Christmas countdown made from brown paper bags and boxes color-blocked with paint and hung in a tree shape. The result is a punchy and playful display whose colors glow as bright as traditional tree lights. Sugar Plum – Go for girly by mixing vibrant pinks and teals with metallic colors and glitter that instantly make any decoration stand out. String together bulb ornaments to dress up a bar cart and set the scene with a complementary backdrop on the wall. The playful and casual set-up conveys a fun, relaxed atmosphere. December 2015

4 Holiday Decorating Trends to Try This Season
Carrie and Morgan suggest these design trends to help infuse personality and go all out on holiday decorating this year:
16
Camp Christmas – Embrace the outdoors and the cozy feelings that come with the holiday season by fusing traditional colors with warm patterns. Dress outdoor wreaths and furniture with flannel or buffalo-check patterned fabric reminiscent of winter. Guests from near and far will feel welcome and at home for the holidays.

A
staple of the holidays, flavorful desserts bring a seasonal spread together like nothing else, and whipping up those desserts is a perfect time to spend some quality time with your family. From cookies that are sure to quickly disappear to a classic cheesecake and a berry-inspired twist on a holiday favorite, an array of tantalizing desserts can keep your family and friends around the dinner table long after the main course has been devoured, and give your family a new activity to bond over.
Made to Vanish When it comes to holiday baking, it’s often the simplest ingredients and classic recipes that resonate best with everyone. One of which is Quaker’s Vanishing Oatmeal Raisin Cookies – a family favorite that’s been featured under the lid of the Quaker Old Fashioned Oats canister for 20 years. A kitchen staple for 100 percent whole grain baking needs, the Quaker Oats canister is also celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Find more oats recipes and learn more about the iconic oat canister at quakeroats.com.
Vanishing Oatmeal Raisin Cookies Prep time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 8 minutes Makes: 4 dozen
In large bowl, beat butter and sugars with electric mixer on medium speed until creamy. Add eggs and vanilla; beat well. Add combined flour, baking soda, cinnamon and salt; mix well. Add oats and raisins; mix well.
18
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened, plus 6 tablespoons 3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla December 2015
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional) 3 cups Quaker Oats (quick or old fashioned, uncooked) 1 cups raisins
Heat oven to 350 F.
Drop dough by rounded tablespoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes, or until light golden brown. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheets; move to wire rack. Cool completely. Store tightly covered.
A Holiday Classic Sure to Please Be sure to remember around the holidays that special can be simple, and recipes do not need to be complex to be guest-worthy. Keep your kitchen stocked with a few key ingredients that can be used in a variety of dishes, such as Philadelphia Cream Cheese, which is perfect in this rich Classic Cheesecake and other desserts, but it also lends a creamy texture to appetizers and main dishes. Find more tips and recipes to make your holiday entertaining sparkle at creamcheese.com. Classic Cheesecake Prep time: 20 minutes Total time: 5 hours, 45 minutes (including refrigerating) Makes: 16 servings 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs 3 tablespoons sugar 1/3 cup butter or margarine, melted 4 packages (8 ounces each) Philadelphia Cream Cheese, softened
1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 4 eggs 1 cup canned cherries
Heat oven to 325 F. Mix graham crumbs, sugar and butter; press into bottom of 9-inch springform pan. Beat cream cheese, sugar and vanilla with mixer until blended. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing on low speed after each until blended. Pour over crust. Bake 1 hour, or until center is almost set. Run knife around rim of pan to loosen cake; cool before removing rim. Refrigerate 4 hours. Top with canned cherries, if desired.
A Holiday Treat Straight From Your Freezer For a festive twist to your holiday sweets, look no further than your freezer. Aside from a bright, joyful color, frozen red raspberries’ sweet and tart flavors allow them to complement and enhance a wide range of ingredients. They also boast the most fiber and the lowest natural sugar content compared to other berries. This Raspberry Greek Yogurt Bark is sure to warm your loved ones’ hearts with the taste of the holidays. Find more recipes worth sharing this holiday season at redrazz.org. Raspberry Greek Yogurt Bark Recipe courtesy of NourishRDs. com
2 cups plain, reduced-fat (2%) Greek yogurt 1 lemon, zest only 2 tablespoons honey 1 cup frozen raspberries 1/2 cup shelled pistachios 1/4 cup slivered almonds
In medium bowl, combine first 3 ingredients. Stir until well incorporated. Add berries, pistachios and almonds to mixture. Fold in until well incorporated. Spread mixture in baking pan and place in freezer for about 2-3 hours, or until hardened. Once hardened, remove bark from pan and either cut or break up into pieces. Allow to thaw about 5 minutes before eating. Notes: Store remaining bark in freezer. You can experiment with any ingredients you have on hand, such as frozen cherries with dark chocolate chunks, frozen blueberries with unsweetened flaked coconut or dried cranberries with pecans.
Line small baking pan with aluminum foil.

In His Presence
I
t’s the most wonderful time of the year. The tree is decorated and lit and our mantles are dripping with holiday greeting cards from family and friends. Christmas songs and carols fill the air and children sit wide-eyed staring at the presents. I recently overheard someone say, “Christmas is all about the children.” While there’s little more that I enjoy more than my children and grandchildren at Christmas time, this season is actually about one very special child. Many years ago God did something about our human condition that would put us right with Him forever. He sent His own Son into the world as a little baby boy. Luke’s account in 1:30-31 sets the stage as the angel Gabriel appears to Mary with the incredible news. And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.” And it came to pass just as the angel said. Mary gave birth to that special little boy and named him Jesus. But he didn’t stay a little child. He began to grow in wisdom and in stature. He grew into a man who carried out his special mission flawlessly. He came from God and he would return to God, but not before changing everything in our world. It’s the story of Christ that focuses on why He came into the world. Perhaps the most succinct summation of His ministry is found in John 1:11. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God…” He came in humble beginnings, lived a sinless life, was crucified and buried in a borrowed tomb. On the third day He got up from the grave, overcoming death, and ascended to the right hand of God where He is now making intercession for you and me. The Christmas story focuses us on how Jesus came into the world. The Christ story tells us why He came into the world. Together the stories remind us to celebrate and rejoice thankfully because He lives and reigns in OUR world, right here in our hearts. In this season we celebrate that God made a way through Jesus Christ for us to live everyday enjoying the great gift of salvation!! I encourage you to receive Him as a great present from God. Because, He’s what truly makes this the most wonderful time of the year.
