New Year Resolutions The act of creating resolutions started many years ago when the ancient Babylonians made promises to their gods at the start of each New Year. The Babylonians vowed that they would pay their debts and return any objects they had borrowed. The act of making resolutions was witnessed during the Roman and medieval eras and is also prevalent throughout the world’s religions, which now places the focus on one to reflect once a year on self-improvement. Modern day resolutions take on selfimprovement by dealing with physical issues such as weight loss and/or vowing to work out. This is due to the fact that many of us struggle attempting to fit into our clothes after the holidays, making gym memberships a priority. Some people make resolutions revolving around financial relief while others can’t ignore the organizational pleas pertaining to that junk drawer, closet, or garage that requires the help of specialists. Resolutions that are created should be worth attaining because of the benefit that will be far reaching when they are accomplished. Here are a few that I believe can be reached and can create a positive

10

CELINA Magazine

| January 2015

impact with a rippling effect throughout our district and community. Resolution #1 – Volunteer at one of our campuses or through the multiple nonprofit organizations that call Celina home. Volunteering is especially vital for our high school students who are applying to colleges and universities that want to see their applicants giving of their personal time to help those in their community. Resolution #2 – Learn a new language. Adult ESL classes meet every Tuesday and Thursday evening at the Celina ISD Administration Building. If English is not your first language, do yourself a favor and come to class. This will not only help you, but also allows you to have the tools to help your children succeed academically. Resolution #3 – Create story time in your home. Children become readers by sitting on the laps of their parents sharing a good book. Literacy is the key to a child’s early educational success, and if started at a young age, can lead to a love of reading as adults. Resolution #4 – Discover new cultures. The Cajun and Cinco de Mayo Festivals are two events held in downtown Celina

and a great way to learn about the history and traditions of other cultures. This is a fantastic opportunity to make new friends and experience traditions other than your own. Resolution #5 – Think positively! Everyone makes mistakes but through life’s little bumps in the road, you are learning, pushing and challenging yourself to do things you never thought you could. Your happiness will radiate through others creating positive environments and a willingness to work together. As we say goodbye to 2014, the New Year comes upon us as a fresh start. With resolutions decided, we begin to write this new chapter that started for us last August. The administration, faculty and staff of Celina ISD look upon this New Year with anticipation and excitement as they and their students continue to develop the story line that will culminate into the much-anticipated final chapter.

New Year ... New Life BY PASTOR JACK GRAHAM

We all love new beginnings. And as we begin the New Year and a fresh start, I want to remind you that the life that we share in Jesus Christ is new life! It is life that our Lord gives us, and it is an incredible life ... it is a dynamic life ... it is a powerful life ... a supernatural life! In fact, if our lives are not supernatural, they’re superficial. It is the supernatural life of the Lord Jesus Christ that transforms us and makes us brand new. We need only look to one man who demonstrates and declares new life in Christ perhaps more than any other—Saul of Tarsus, better known as the Apostle Paul. In Acts we read of the amazing conversion of this man who was absolutely and completely turned around by the power of new life in Jesus Christ. On the road to Damascus, Saul came face-to-face with Jesus Christ, blinded by the glorious light of the Living Lord. And he cried out, “Who are You, Lord?” Upon hearing, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” Saul’s reply was powerful in its simplicity: “Lord, what do You want me to do?” There is nothing more exciting than when someone who was lost is found, and is completely transformed. I want to ask you today, have you been so transformed by Jesus Christ that He is the absolute Lord of your life? Does He reign as King in your life? As we begin this New Year, I want to challenge you to do as Saul did and ask, “Lord, what do You want me to do?” And under His leadership, commit to doing whatever it may be. By His grace, that is a resolution you can keep. Dr. Jack Graham is pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church, which has campuses in Prosper, Plano and Dallas.

Goal Setting and New Year’s Resolutions

– How to Help You and Your Children Be Successful

For many of us, New Year’s resolutions are grandly made and easily broken. Why? Because a resolution is just that – a decision. To make a life change, you need more than a decision, you need a plan. The plan is the guide to put your decision into action so that you can reach your goal. It’s up to you to take steps to get closer to your goal, and learning how to set goals takes practice. Whether you resolve to lose weight, save money or adopt a healthier lifestyle, it takes time and commitment to your plan for your resolution to become a habit. Setting realistic goals can lead to a healthier lifestyle and improved selfesteem. Children also benefit from learning how to plan and reach goals. It helps them learn how to manage their time and make good decisions – skills that can have a lasting and positive impact on their future. Together with your child, set a healthy goal and create a plan!

CELINA Magazine

| January 2015

Setting a small goal, like getting up half an hour earlier in the morning so that you can get where you need to be on time, may be challenging, but it just takes practice. And, after a few weeks or months, it will become a positive habit. Knowing that you can make small changes can give you the motivation and confidence to tackle a bigger goal. An adult may choose to quit smoking or exercise regularly; a child could choose dribbling a soccer ball or practicing multiplication tables daily. The following tips can help you and your children successfully plan and achieve your goals: Be specific. When thinking about goals, be as exact as possible. People who set specific goals are more likely to succeed. For example, instead of saying that you want to save money, set a specific goal to save $20 (or whatever the goal amount is) per week.

Put it in writing. Write down exactly what you want to achieve and post it in a place where you will see it every day. This will help remind you of what you’re working toward. When you write, use positive terms. For example, instead of “I will stop eating junk food”, re-word your goal as “I will make healthy food choices.” Set realistic goals. When you think about setting goals, make sure that they are within your reach. Be mindful of your finances, schedule, and other personal affairs. Remembering these important factors will help you set realistic goals. It’s unreasonable to expect to make a lot of big changes at the same time. Develop an action plan. Create a timeline with steps toward your goal. Set deadlines for each step and cross them off as you go. Sometimes just crossing things off and watching your list get smaller can give you a sense of accomplishment and help you

Believe in yourself. Stay positive about your progress. Share your goal with a friend and ask him/her to help keep your spirits up. If you get stuck or need a little encouragement, don’t be afraid to talk about it. Be flexible. Keep in mind that setbacks can happen. Don’t get discouraged and give up. Try again! Your hard work will pay off! Reward yourself. Acknowledge your achievements, even the small ones. Reaching a goal takes hard work and you should be proud of your efforts. Celebrating could mean sharing a snack with your child or taking some time for yourself. Having clear goals and a plan can bring your family together and help you be healthier all year. All positive changes – tiny or drastic – can improve your everyday life. Make this New Year count and create a plan to follow through on your resolutions!

HELPING AT HOME

BY PAT HUNN

W

hat started out as a vision by long time Celina resident Pat Hunn became a reality on the evening of December 20, 2014. And the youth of Celina and some in the surrounding area were the benefactors. Hunn is part of a Christian Leadership Concepts from First Baptist Church in Celina that meets early on Friday mornings each week. The group consists of 16 men, and began with a 2 year commitment to a Bible Study intended to strengthen each mans Christian walk. One of the sections in the study challenged the group to come up with a service project that would benefit the community, preferably something they’ve always wanted to do but have never actually done. Hunn suggested that the group raise the necessary funds to purchase up to 100 bicycles for Christmas for the underprivileged youth in Celina. Mike Lohmann, another member upped the challenge from 100 to 300 bikes, and still another member suggested that we include a brand new Bible along with the bicycles. The project began to gain support and enthusiasm from each of the members when another member,

16

CELINA Magazine

| January 2015

Chris Anderson, suggested that the group partner with Carter Morris and Grace Bridge Food Bank in Celina to assist in the project. At this point “Bikes and Bibles” was born! Each man was given a fundraising goal that, if met, would provide enough money to purchase 300 Bikes and Bibles. Hunn contacted Former Celina resident Austin Carey who works in the corporate office of Academy Sports to see if they could purchase a large order of bicycles at a bulk discount. Carey and Academy Sports agreed to help the cause and gave the group a discounted price through the Frisco, Texas location. The vision was becoming a reality! Carter Morris provided a list of children

between the age of 4 and 12 and required the parents to register the children to receive their Bikes and Bibles. In addition, several teachers in Celina ISD and Prosper ISD were contacted to see if they knew of any children that may not participate

in the Grace Bridge Food Bank but still had a need for a bicycle this Christmas. When the list was completed a total of 166 young people were invited to come to the CISD Administration Building on Saturday,

December 20, to receive their brand new Bikes and Bibles. After Morris welcomed the large crowd to the event, he invited FBC Pastor Kevin Lykins to share a message about not only the gift of a Bike and a Bible for Christmas, but also about the greater gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Hunn then shared his vision for Bikes and Bibles and thanked all of those that participated financially in support of the event. Around 120 young people picked up their Bikes and Bibles on the night of the event and the remainder had their gifts delivered to them or they were picked up at Grace Bridge before Christmas Day. Hunn said “The smiles and tears of joy were incredible to see. To know that we helped make these kids Christmas a little more joyous than they would have been otherwise was truly a blessing.” Each child’s Bike and Bible had their name on it, making the gift personal, just like the personal relationship we are invited to have with our Savior Jesus Christ.

person in our region would go through their childhood without a new Bike and Bible for Christmas that would be awesome.”

The men’s fellowship would like to see the Bikes and Bibles become even bigger next year, possibly expanding to include more youth in Prosper, Anna, Frisco, and even McKinney. Hunn said, “I would like

to see Bikes and Bibles become to Celina what Clothe a Child has become to Frisco. Clothe a Child is so well run and it helps so many needy people in such a real, positive way. If we could make sure that no young

A separate account for Bikes and Bibles is set up at Grace Bridge Food Bank. All donations are tax deductible and will be used exclusively for the Bikes and Bibles project. Hunn added “The more money we receive, the wider and faster we can expand our program. This year we ran out of kids before we ran out of money. That’s a good problem to have. I guarantee you that as happy as those families were to receive their Bikes and Bibles, their joy would pale in comparison to the joy we received in helping them.”

///The Old Man’s Corner

Reset BY JAMES YEARY

W

ell, here we are again, January 1 or so, and ready to start a new year, again! Seems like it was just a few days ago I was hitting the reset button on the DAY OF THE YEAR COUNTER. You know the one that kicks over a number for each day of the year and goes from 1 to 365? Well, it’s New Years day and time to press the reset button and put it back to 000. Let’s just do that and see what happens. Push…Push… Push,… darn, it didn’t take. I’ll try again. Push… Finally, it’s back to 000. Since it’s the first day of 2015 I’ll have to add one day to the counter. Push the add button and there we are. Off and running into the New Year, again. It seems to me that I am pressing that reset button more quickly than I remember from years past. It makes me wonder if I have more to do, or I’m just getting slower at doing them. No matter, just as long as I can keep doing, it sure beats the alternative. Is it just me or do holidays and other markers of the passing year feel like they have changed. Some are closer together and others farther apart? The time between New Years and Easter feel like forever. The time between Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years is a sudden short term burst of time at the end of the year, and we are again into the doldrums of the Pre-Easter lull at the top of a new year. Once again the counter is back to 000 and off we go once again.

20

CELINA Magazine

| January 2015

Remember when the finals of pro-basketball were played around Easter? Now, they run till about mid June or so. The Super Bowl was the second or third week of January and now it’s the first week of February I think. The World Series used to start in the first week of Sept. and now it feels like it runs to almost Thanksgiving. No matter, the days of using sports as your event marker on the calendar are all but gone. I don’t look forward to the New Year as much as I have in days past. Some of my outlook is summed up in a sarcastic response I sometimes give when people ask me ‘How are you?’ I say: worse than yesterday, but no doubt better than tomorrow! Over the years I have found that statement to be truer than I meant it to be.

On the other hand, a new year brings an opportunity for new starts, new lives, new adventures, and new a-lot-of--things. One’s outlook and response to good and bad events over the year will carve memories and fortunes for some and disaster for others. As they say in the finance world: past performance is no indication of future rewards. Each one of us must make our own way and deal with life’s daily struggle for himself. For me, each New Years day is like leaving the bottom of the calendar and going back up to the top. One day at a time moving down, looking for the holidays and other joyous events that will fill another year of my life. Like I said before, it beats the alternative.
