It’s Graduation Time!!! All of us at Cedarbrook Media and CELINA Magazine would like to congratulate all of the 2015 graduating seniors. This is a huge milestone in your lives, and you’ve worked hard for this accomplishment…so enjoy it!! Enjoy every single “last”…your last day of classes, your last final, your last time to leave your campus, your last time to gather together as a class. These are wonderful memories that you will cherish one day. Celina is a wonderful community to be a part of, and although you may not be a student here anymore, you will always be a Bobcat! Go out into the world and show them what you’re made of…show them what your community is all about…show them how Celina has shaped you into the successful person that you are. A Graduation Blessing: Embarking on a journey which began some time ago, how could you have imagined all the things you’d come to know. You learned to use each challenge as an opportunity, to overcome each problem – despite adversity. It wasn’t always easy keeping up with things at school, buy you held on to your beliefs, even when it wasn’t “cool.” You found your voice & chose a path that honors who you are, and that, I think, may be your greatest lesson learned thus far. For no one could be prouder of the person you’ve become, and that is why I’m confident that the best is yet to come. May you never waste a moment wishing life was not unfair. Rather use the gifts God gave to you, to change the world out there. Your graduation signals us that you are on your way. So spread your wings and fly my dear, forever and a day! (Compliments of Barbara MacAdam)

CISD News

As the school year draws to a close, it seems to take us by surprise that we are once again faced with the reality of saying goodbye to those that have walked the halls of our campuses since the day they took those first hesitant steps towards their Kindergarten classrooms. I am always conflicted as to my feelings as I hear the names announced of the graduates. As they cross the stage to shake my hand, my heart fills with pride as I have had a front row seat to witness their accomplishments, and yet, at the same time a sense of loss knowing that we must say goodbye. Through their smiling faces, images of their days spent as a student flash through my mind. These snapshots of their academic and athletic accomplishments, along with their musical, artistic and theatrical performances, leave me with the knowledge that they are prepared to take their next steps confidently towards their future. During the next few weeks, these graduates will be inundated with cards filled with congratulation wishes, inspirational quotes, and the unspoken reality that “change” is heading their way. Navigating these changes are not always easy, but within time lead to new experiences, friendships, and exploration of life outside of the city limits of Celina, Texas. With the changes that will occur over the next few months for these students, they will always and forever be a part of the Bobcat Family. I’ve included a few “Bobcat Pearls of Wisdom” that I would like to offer to our graduates. In a few weeks, I will look out across the audience assembled and will witness the joy, the realization of change coming, and the inevitable tears on the faces of the parents as their children take that final, but more confident walk across the stage, signaling their last act of their high school years. As a parent myself, I understand firsthand the rollercoaster of feelings that graduation ceremonies bring, but at the same time the prospect of what the futures holds for these new graduates strengthens my resolve and gives me hope that our students will be the change that the world seeks.

Grace Bridge Food Bank Celebrates 4 Years of Hope Served By: Alyssa Heffley

P

eople caring for people. Families serving families. Companies impacting communities. In April 2011, Grace Bridge Food Bank opened its doors in the heart of downtown Celina with this mission guiding the desire to serve families in need in North Texas. Though there is no geographic restriction to receive food and other essential items, most families receiving assistance live within a 30-mile radius of the main distribution center in Celina. Grace Bridge began with the purpose of tackling the food insecurity issue faced by many families, particularly those living in more rural areas. Families are able to receive boxes of food on the first and third Saturday of every month. In addition, water bottles, fresh bread, hygiene products, and other items are consistently given to families thanks to the generous donations of local community members and businesses.

• Eye Care Clinic - providing free eye exams and low-cost eye wear by appointment on the third Saturday of the month in partnership with Lone Star Vision.

Four years later, the growth that Grace Bridge has experienced is astounding. Since 2011, Grace Bridge has served 5,000+ individuals in surrounding communities with the help of 7,000+ volunteers. What makes Grace Bridge unique is its dedication to the whole person. By engaging people in relationships that matter, we desire to meet the deepest needs of the families we serve by showing them how much God truly loves and cares for them. In addition to the first/ third Saturday food distributions, Grace Bridge now operates many initiatives, including:

• Grace Bridge Farms – organic, sustainable, above-ground community gardens, which provide fresh produce for local families.

18

CELINA Magazine

• Grace Bridge Resale Store - located on the square in downtown Celina, providing high quality, new/gently used clothing and shoes for men, women, and children. All sales benefit Grace Bridge. • Neighbor-to-Neighbor Disaster Relief - aiding families affected by personal or natural disasters within a 200-mile radius.

• Annual Events – meeting additional needs of families throughout the year, including “I Got Your Back” school supply/backpack drive, “Gotcha Cover’d” jeans, diapers, and winter wear drive, May 2015

“Bikes & Bibles” Christmas gift drive, and more. On Saturday, April 18, more than 200 people celebrated Grace Bridge’s 4th Anniversary with a food distribution, eye care clinic, the Grand Opening of Grace Bridge Resale Store, an inflatable bounce house, a snow cone machine, a cookout, and gardening projects at Grace Bridge Farms. Everyone involved, whether they were volunteering for the first time or have been instrumental since day one, was amazed by how much hope has been served to the community through Grace Bridge in just four short years.

Lord, Hear Our Cry

By Pastor Jack Graham

It is a true privilege to serve as Honorary Chairman for the 2015 National Day of Prayer. I am deeply grateful and honored for the opportunity to lead our country at such a time as this. The 64th annual National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 7. It is such a wonderful opportunity for America to unite in prayer. There is great power in corporate prayer … and we are crying out to the Lord. We are facing a clear and present danger in our generation. We are fighting battles every single day. And the only way to win this war is to prepare and to pray. More than anything, in this desperate hour, may our hearts cry out to God for the healing of our nation’s spiritual brokenness. May Jesus be exalted and may God’s people be awakened to a new obedience to fulfill the Great Commission. Throughout the country, where people have gathered, we will pray in unison at noon (EDT) on the National Day of Prayer. Please join me in praying this prayer on May 7 and every day leading up to this special time in our nation: Heavenly Father, We come to You in the Name that is above every name—Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Our hearts cry out to You. Knowing that You are a prayer-answering, faithful God— the One we trust in times like these—we ask that You renew our spirits, revive our churches, and heal our land. We repent of our sins and ask for Your grace and power to save us. Hear our cry, oh God, and pour out Your Spirit upon us that we may walk in obedience to Your Word. We are desperate for Your tender mercies. We are broken and humbled before You.

Forgive us, and in the power of Your great love, lift us up to live in Your righteousness. We pray for our beloved nation. May we repent and return to You and be a light to the nations. And we pray for our leaders and ask that You give them wisdom and faith to follow You. Preserve and protect us, for You are our refuge and only hope. Deliver us from all fears except to fear You, and may we courageously stand in the Truth that sets us free. We pray with expectant faith and grateful hearts. In Jesus’ name, our Savior. Amen. Dr. Jack Graham is pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church, which has campuses in Prosper, Plano and Dallas.

Cinco De Mayo In Celina What is the significance of the Cinco de Mayo Fest? Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “fifth of May”) is a holiday held on May 5th that commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. It is celebrated primarily in the state of Puebla and in the United States. While Cinco de Mayo sees limited significance and celebration nationwide in Mexico, the date is observed nationwide in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. In Celina, we use Cinco de Mayo to enhance the community spirit, celebrate the diverse cultures in the area, and support students trying to further their education with scholarships. What are the attractions of this festival? The main attractions are: Scholarship Awards, the Parade, folkloric dances, cultural entertainment and foods. It’s a fun time for everyone. What is El Puente de Celina? El Puente de Celina, serving as a non-profit organization, is dedicated to bridging the

22

CELINA Magazine

diverse cultures within our community through education, celebration and community development. How do the Scholarships work? Who chooses and who receives them? The scholarship criteria are set forth by the scholarship committee and the high school counselors. Requirements for applications are met through various degrees of vetting and essay. The committee chooses those who are not from families of means, but have the heart, desire, and intelligence to continue their education in the collegiate arena. Natali Estrada, 20 years old, is originally from Mexico City. She is currently working at a private pre-school and at an upscale, fine dining restaurant. She moved to Celina during her 6th grade year and explains that it was a “scary yet good experience.” While growing up, she was involved in choir, theatre, Spanish Club and other activities. She didn’t know which college she wanted to attend, but knew she wanted to go to a big university and live the “college life”. However, her parents didn’t have the money to help financially, and didn’t want her to go too far away. When she applied to the “El puente de Celina Scholarship” she never expected to receive it. She spent hours applying for others. She remembers

that she applied for more than 25 different scholarships. When she was awarded the scholarship, she was extremely happy and thankful. Because of it, she recently finished her Associates degree and plans to pursue her bachelors. “Collin College was such an amazing experience. All the professors are great, they really want to help you and want you to succeed. They will give you the materials you just need to learn how to use them. In the next ten years I hope to be working in a hospital with kids, even though I do not know in which department I want to specialize in. I know it definitely has to be with kids! So when I come to Celina, I can teach what I know and help those in need. I think helping people is a great way to mature. You meet people and their problems and you relate to most of them. Sometimes just by taking the time to sit down and speak to them and give them your advice is the best way to help. When I look at the people who founded this scholarship, it fills me with emotions. These people believed in me enough to invest their time to help me. They saw potential in me that perhaps other people didn’t. They all gave me the chance and opportunity to succeed and one day I want to give that chance to someone in the same situation.” – Natali Estrada

Celina Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet By Melissa Cromwell

“NetWORK Hard & PLAY Hard” was the theme as local business professionals gathered at The Bridges Golf Club for the Greater Celina Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet in April. The event’s main feature was a money machine donated by Landmark Bank Mortgage. Laura Glass, Ron Gayle and the staff from Landmark Bank Mortgage were on hand to fill the machine with $600 cash! Random drawings were held throughout the evening for someone to enter the machine and try to catch as much blowing money as they could for a specified time. It was great fun to watch. Nearly 110 people attended the Banquet where they were serenaded by Kylee Terry and danced to the tunes of Oliver Delgado. The Family, Career and Community Leaders of America organization acted as the servers for the evening. They were completing community service work for their organization at Celina High School. The Celina Chamber has been working diligently for the last year to get more involved with the Celina ISD. Having the students sing, play music and volunteer at the event made it extremely special for all of those involved. In addition to the great food and entertainment, the annual event also served as an opportunity to honor several individuals and businesses who have displayed outstanding service to the

Chamber and the community throughout the year. Celina ISD gave out their Teacher of the Year awards to 5 exceptional teachers representing each of the schools. Elementary School Teacher of the Year was Marcy Lykins, Intermediate School Teacher of the Year was Amanda Paterson, Middle School Teacher of the year was Kimberly Brinkerhoff, Junior High Teacher of the Year was Dottie Myers and High School Teacher of the Year was Melessa Barbknecht. Mr. O’Dell, Celina ISD Superintendent, introduced the teachers and did a special tribute to Pam Peters, who is retiring from the Celina ISD School Board this year. The City of Celina honored their employees by presenting awards to their Director of the Year, Gabe Johnson, and their Employee of the Year, Amy Kuehn. Children’s Health Pediatric Group received the New Business of the Year award. Dr. Hogan and her staff have made a lasting impact on the healthcare of our children in Celina. Business of the Year went to North Texas Bells, also known as Taco Bell. The entire Taco Bell team has embraced the City of Celina and has quickly become a Bobcat hangout.

O’Dell and Jerrica Anderson accepted the award and shared how much the Club has supported our local youth. The money raised and volunteer hours worked were impressive. Rachel Baty, President of Celina Newcomers and Friends, received the Volunteer of the Year award. Her countless hours of volunteering for numerous events, programs and organizations is a total selfless act on her part. She works hard to make Celina a better place because she is committed to the community. Kyle Mills was honored with the Citizen of the Year Award for everything that he does for the City of Celina and the community members. Mills gave an emotional thank you speech saying how much he loved Celina and the people who live here. As you can see, all of the award recipients have an innate desire to give to the community, volunteer their time and help friends, neighbors or anyone else in Celina. These are people who are well deserved for the awards and represent our community with pride.

Community Friendly Business of the Year was presented to Taylor Realty. Andy McAnally, owner, has always been quick to sponsor and volunteer at numerous events throughout Celina. A new category this year, Non-Profit of the Year went to The Rotary Club of Preston Trails. Ralph May 2015

Keller Williams Realty

“Red Day” By Georgina Hennen

Keller Williams Realty is a company that believes in giving back. It is a part of the company’s culture and is evident in each office every day of the year. In this culture of giving, the company designates one day in May when agents across the nation give back to their community. This day is called “Red Day” and the motto is Renew, Energize, and Donate. Keller Williams North Country opened in Celina to serve the Northern Collin County & Grayson

County regions in 2008. For the past five years on Red Day, our agents have worked to stock the pantry at Bethlehem Place in Prosper. With the population growth in this area, our office has also grown, which allows us to expand our efforts to impact the communities where we work and live. This year, our official Red Day is Thursday, May 14, and Keller Williams North Country is planning a 2 day event. On Thursday, May 14th, agents will load their cars to take canned goods and non-perishable items to Bethlehem Place in Prosper. We will stock the pantry to help combat the summer needs when kids are home from school. We will also have a group of agents going to Grace Bridge in Celina to empty their donation bins and stock the warehouse shelves. Then, on Saturday, May 16th, we will have more agents

at Grace Bridge to help with the organization’s community outreach day serving families in our regions and handing out supplies. The last of our goals for this year’s Red Day is to raise money within our office to cover the cost of a plot in a community garden that Grace Bridge is planting. This garden will provide the opportunity to offer people in our community healthy options of fresh garden vegetables, beyond the usual nonperishable items. If anyone would like to participate in any of these opportunities to help our neighbors, please bring non-perishable items or cash donations to the Keller Williams office at 1212 S. Preston Rd, Celina, Texas.
