s we turn the calendar to September, there are so many reasons to love this time of year. School is off to a great start, the temperatures are cooling down, we can finally break out the hoodies and Friday night lights are on the agenda for our weekend entertainment!! Celina loves its Bobcats, and these student athletes have been working hard for weeks now to represent their beloved hometown. It isn’t just the football team that has been hard at work though. Volleyball players, cross country runners, marching band members, cheerleaders and the drill team have put in countless hours to prepare for their seasons as well. Practices, camps, tournaments and competitions were held over the summer break and all of your Celina Bobcats are geared up and ready for a great 2014 season! The coaching staff at Celina High School are dedicated to the athletes, the school and the fans. We hope that you enjoy the article and sneak peek into the lives of your Bobcat coaches. These leaders work tirelessly to develop not only successful athletes, but strong members of the community as well. The lessons learned while on these teams will stay with our athletes for the rest of their lives. It’s not just about the score at the end of the night on the scoreboard. It’s about building integrity, character and class. It’s about putting the goals of your team ahead of any personal agenda you may have. It’s about being a winner, regardless of the final score. It’s about respect and very few communities instill these traits into their athletes better than Celina does. It’s going to be a great Fall Season of Celina Sports, and we are excited to share it with you! If you have a fun or creative story idea, let us know. Please feel free to send us any photos from games, activities or performances. We will do our best to get your submissions into one of our upcoming issues – send them to Admin@WeAreCelina.com. We look forward to hearing about all of the success this fall brings. GO BOBCATS!!

Respect The Past ---- Represent The Future

Celina Independent School District school board members, administrators and district employees will be sporting new district shirts this fall. Our 2014-2015 District Theme: “Respect The Past ---- Represent The Future” is emblazoned across the back of our new district shirts. In my humble opinion, I believe that these six words hold true what is important to not only our school district, but to our community as well. Respecting the past is what Celina ISD does well. This is evident in all aspects of our school district. From personnel to pep rallies, our past is well represented. Many district employees can state with pride that they were born and raised in Celina, Texas. They graduated from Alla Hubbard or from what is now Celina Middle School, and after graduating from college, made their way back to Celina to begin their careers. The past is also evident during pep rallies, which combine elements of the past with present trends, to allow both young and old to participate in the festivities. Last but not least is the traditional circle prayer at the end of each football game. It’s wonderful to see our current players, cheerleaders, drill team and band members participate, but when the circle swells to include former students from years gone by, it is a tradition that will never be forgotten and what makes Celina unique. The past is well represented on any given day at Bobcat Kuntry. It has been the unofficial meeting place for many former coaches and players who spend mornings analyzing the football game and offering up their opinions of how much the Bobcats will win by come Friday night. I have known of former Superintendents who were “put on the spot” while just stopping in to get a cup of coffee. Of course, it was all in good fun!

Representing the future comes easy to the Celina School District. Our former students are representing our district and community well, by their continued success in colleges and universities throughout the United States. We have students who are passionate about serving through their participation in missions traveling to countries such as Guatemala, Honduras, Africa and China, to just name a few. Many of our students are representing the future by teaching in school districts not only in Texas, but also throughout the United States and including many foreign countries. We have former athletes that are setting records for their respective universities, and those that have gone on to coach on every level including the professional ranks. Last May, Celina was honored to learn that one of our former graduates, Curry Kennedy was chosen to speak at his graduation ceremony at the University of Arkansas. His speech moved over 10,000 in attendance to rise to their feet in thunderous applause. Throughout his speech, he reflected on the past and how it had taken him to what would be his future. The Celina School District and the City of Celina are bracing for the growth that is expected to come our way in the next few years. With that said, no matter how large we grow, our community and our school district will always respect the past to ensure that we represent the future to the best of our abilities.

Meet Your Bobcats

-By Pamela Nishimoto

Life lessons are learned on the athletic fields of Celina Independent School District. The young men and women fortunate to be part of CISD Athletics are taught the importance of great morals, integrity and character. “That is the main goal of our extracurricular activities,” explains Athletic Director Bill Elliott. “When students leave Celina we want them to be contributing members of our community, and hopefully become wonderful wives, husbands and parents.” Another objective of the program is to “give these student athletes great memories they’ll cherish for a lifetime.”

others differences and cultures.” Teaching these values, Celina Bobcats and Ladycats are destined for lifetimes of success in every endeavor, including athletics. Boys Football Celina ISD Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Bill Elliott played football for Celina legends G.A. Moore and Butch Ford, whom he also worked for at Celina ISD. Under Elliott’s leadership, Celina has made the playoffs 21 straight years, played nine state championship games and won seven state championships. Six of this year’s football coaching staff are former Celina High School players.

Memories are being made and characters molded on and off the field. “Last fall was a great season for Celina Athletics,” states Elliott. “Our students competed at a very high level in every sport. All of our major team sports made the playoffs. Our girls volleyball and our girls basketball teams both made their regional tournaments. And our boys track team medaled at state for their fourth straight year.”

This season there will be 32 returning lettermen - nine starters on offense and seven on defense - “so more age and experience” than last year’s team, describes Elliott. “We had a young team last year. They gave everything they had and got beat by one point by Gainesville. The team worked hard through spring and summer. They have heart and they want to prove something - to themselves and to their fans.”

But even more importantly, Celina student athletes learned about “conducting themselves with the upmost integrity. To treat others with great respect and develop themselves mentally, physically and spiritually,” explains Elliott. “For our boys we have what we call Bobcat Core Values: Be honest. No drugs or alcohol. Respect women. Respect

Off the field with Coach Elliott: “My father has always been a great example for me. He worked relentlessly hard to support our family and help to make me into the man that I am today. Always supported me and believed in me. Both my boys played soccer, football, baseball, a lot of sports - I tried to

make it to every game they played. Never said anything to any coach or official. Wanted to model for my sons that it’s about the kids and the ‘spirit of the game.’” Home team: Wife Kathy, whom he met at Texas Christian University. Sons: Nathan and Caleb. Boys Basketball In his 34th year teaching and coaching, Dusty Hutson is entering his sixth season as Boys Basketball Head Coach at Celina High School and his 11th season overall as a head coach. A 2013-14 season highlight was beating Aubrey to make the playoffs and then nearly beating Decatur in the boys basketball bi-district game. “The most important thing for us coaches is to hopefully mold our players into outstanding young men who will become great husbands and fathers for their families,” explains Hutson. “We try to instill our players to always give great effort and to do the right thing.” This fall Hutson expects both the boys and girls basketball teams to have successful seasons. “Our athletic program is a focal point of the community. Our students know what they represent - ‘CELINA!’ Everywhere they go they know that they are a Celina athlete and they know the expectation levels.” Off the court with Coach Hutson: Butch Ford “took me under his wing some 33 years ago and had a big influence on me.” Teaches AP World History, AP US History and is the Social Studies department head. Cousin is a Texas Rangers relief pitcher. Likes to cook and garden. Home team: Wife Cheryl, who is a Celina ISD first grade teacher. Daughters: Ryan Webb, Natalie and Kyla. Grandchildren: Breyton and Payton. Girls Basketball Head Coach Jordan Davis graduated from Celina High School and was a shooting guard for Baylor University’s National Champion girls basketball team in 2005. Davis teaches Professional Communication (Speech) at Celina High School and is the Assistant Coach for Ladycats Track. In her eighth year coaching for CISD, in which she’s assisted with nearly every sport, Davis shares, “The biggest highlight from last season was the regional finals game against Argyle. It was a crazy ending to a great game, but I was incredibly proud of the fight our team had in some tough moments.” Encouraging students that “hard work and dedication pays off, not only in athletics, but also in life,” Davis describes herself as “intense, energetic, and a tough-loving coach who expects the best from athletes.”

This season “fans will have the opportunity to see two of the best girls basketball teams in Texas play twice in highly-anticipated rematches of last season’s regional final game,” states Davis. Off the court with Coach Davis: “I’d like fans to be loud and encouraging at our games - and, no yelling at officials - I do enough of that on my own.” Inspired by coaches and leaders “all over.” Left-handed. Loves longboarding. Home team: Family and friends “are my biggest supporters - win or lose.” Boys and Girls Cross Country Head Coach Tim Moore is a Celina native who ran track in college and brings his winning attitude to Bobcat and Ladycat cross country. In 2013-14, both the boys and girls teams placed better in the regional cross country meet than in several previous years. As part of their training, Coach Moore focuses on “learning to function as a team. Teaching core values of arriving on time, getting along with all teammates, and working hard on a daily basis” - coaching his athletes to treat their sport like a “job.” During 2014-15, Moore expects fans to see some great improvements in athletic performances from summer training through to the end-of-season events. Community members are encouraged to attend the District Cross Country Meet, being held at Old Celina Park on Wednesday, October 22, as well as other cross-country events throughout the fall. Currently in his 29th year coaching for CISD, Moore says “I wouldn’t trade to coach anywhere else because of the rich traditions in Celina, the overall good people I get to work with and the great kids I get to coach.” Off the field with Coach Moore: Inspired by Coach Loretta Francis, “because she can complete any workout assigned to the athletes and does so willingly.” Able to get along with all types of personalities. Teaches Science at Celina Junior High School. Ran cross country and track for University of Central Oklahoma. Home team: Wife Paula. Daughters: Madi and Mallory. Son: Carter. Girls Volleyball Frank DePaolo brings 19 years of diverse coaching experiences to his first year with Celina ISD. Head Coach for girls volleyball and Assistant Coach for girls basketball at Celina High School, DePaolo is also teaching Pre-AP Algebra I at Celina Junior High. “It’s extremely exciting getting to coach a team that went to the ReSeptember 2014

gional Finals last season,” DePaolo shares. “We have a good group of returners that are working hard to get back to the regional tournament and beyond. The level of volleyball Ladycat fans will see is fast and uptempo. If we continue to grow in the last month before district play starts, the playoffs should be very exciting again this season!” Creating an environment which is “demanding, fair and encouraging,” DePaolo’s core values for athletes, in order of importance are: “Faith, family, school, athletics. And athletics is a distant fourth. I’d like our students to know I’m trying to help them grow into mature young women and just using volleyball as the ‘tool.’” All Friday varsity matches start at 4:30 pm and end prior to football game times. Fans are encouraged to make it a “double-header!”

Celina Quarterback Club Established in 1953, the Celina Quarterback Club is a men’s group which supports all Celina Independent School District athletics, athletes and coaches. Active throughout the school year, during football season club members meet every Thursday at 5:30 am in the Celina Middle School cafeteria for a hearty breakfast, updates on club activities and projects, coaching staff reports for upcoming games, and to watch the previous week’s game film.

Off the Court with Coach DePaolo: “Parents, love and encourage your athletes no matter the outcome of the contest.” Inspirations: “My wife and mother. Neither of them ever back down from a challenge.” Home team: Wife Dottie. Sons: Frank and Aaron.

Through the years the Celina Quarterback Club has been known to have a prayer time for a special need, “pass the hat” to help a family in crisis or maybe an injured player from a surrounding town, or to meet in a circle prayer around the Celina football team.

“Come on out and enjoy the best of the best in Texas! Celina has some amazing athletes with great hear ts and spirits. Be par t of 2014-15 Bobcats and Ladycats history!” – Athletic Director Elliot

The club’s mentoring program has a club member paired with a varsity player to visit and share on a weekly basis throughout the football season. Many great stories come from these relationships and bonds are built that often last many years after the player graduates.

//// From the Town Manager

Mike Foreman

In this time of collective decision-making, citizens are more educated and involved in the direction that they want their town to go. James Anderson describes public policy making as “A purposive course of action followed by an actor or set of actors in dealing with a problem or matter of concern. The City staff listens to our community to ensure that we are defining and prioritizing the issues for this community. Staff then provides details to our City Council of the issues so that they can make informed decisions that can resolve the concerns. From these decisions, policies are created that are implemented in a fair and balanced manner.

Some of the investments that you will see in 2014-2015 are additional police and fire personnel to provide for the public safety needs of our community. The City of Celina is also constructing a new home for our firefighters, which will replace a 30+ year old metal building and temporary building currently used for operations. We will be adding more development staff (building inspectors, a planning staff member, Public Works Inspector and a water customer service employee) to provide improved customer service to our community. A continued emphasis will be placed on infrastructure improvements such as streets and water and sewer lines.

Service delivery is the backbone of our local government. Providing the tools for our staff to deliver world-class customer service is the responsibility of the City Manager and City Council. In the past three years, as well as in the upcoming year, you have and will continue to see an investment by our City Council in programs that will upgrade our customer service delivery to our customers - you the citizens of Celina.

Our partnerships with our Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Corporation, Main Street and School Districts have attracted businesses that will create a vibrant and unique community. Economic development strategies that can spur growth in a region can often create competition between communities and states for popular projects. With a goal to attract and retain business, competition is intensified by the use of a toolbox of economic incentives that can strategically be provided to a potential business.

This year the Council has passed ordinances that will make it easier for developers to develop quality, well planned communities here in Celina. In October of 2013, we added a full time engineer to our staff that lowered the cost to our current citizens for small project development, while at the same time lessened the time for review of small and large projects. City Council also approved the investment in new water meters that have a longer life span, are more accurate, and can be read automatically.

Finally, we pledge to continue building relationships with the community as you have seen this year through the addition of community events such as the tremendously successful Farmer’s Market and Community Garden. It is important to continue to invest in our historic downtown and to always strive to create a vibrant destination for visitors to enjoy and provide an atmosphere where they can learn the history of our community.
