Fall, Football and Homecoming… there are no better traditions than these in Celina! Now that school is back in session and we are settling into our routines, it’s time to bring on the fun of FALL! Enjoy the Friday Night Lights, and get out and support the Bobcats! And, when you see them, be sure to thank the athletes, coaches, cheerleaders, band, drill team, volunteers and student body for making each game memorable… there is so much tradition and hard work that goes into every game!! We’ll see you all at the Homecoming parade and football game on September 18th!!
Did You Know?? Homecoming Mum Tradition Fall in Texas means football, and for any high school or college team, football season includes homecoming. Homecoming is a celebration, and that means a gigantic homecoming mum featuring a chrysanthemum. Most Texans received their introduction to the chrysanthemum through homecoming when they buy their girlfriend or mother a homecoming mum. The NCAA recognizes the University of Missouri as the official place of birth of homecoming. In 1911, Mizzou athletic director Chester Brewer encouraged alumni to attend the game, and he gave them incentive to attend by having a huge celebration around the game that included parades and rallies. At some point not too long after this first homecoming celebration in Missouri, the tradition of a boy giving a chrysanthemum to his homecoming date as a corsage was born in Texas. For decades, mums were simple, comprised of just a small flower with perhaps a few ribbons. In the 1970s, homecoming mums became more elaborate and have continued to grow to the mammoth size they are today. Now they include a huge flower (albeit a silk flower has replaced the real chrysanthemum as the centerpiece), tons of large ribbons, charms, bows, bells, cowbells, stuffed animals, perhaps the high school mascot, and even LED lights in some cases! Even guys have their own version of the mum, called the garter – an elastic band worn around the upper arm that has the same features as the mum only on a much smaller scale. For the longest time, homecoming mums were a Texas-only tradition, but in the last few years it has expanded into neighboring states such as Oklahoma and Louisiana. A huge mum can be a source of pride for a girl in both her school and her homecoming date. Even though homecoming mums have cropped up in other states, like most things, they are still bigger in Texas. - Compliments of The Mum Shop in Plano. The Mum Shop has been a leading designer for custom mums and garters in North Texas for 30 years. Call them at 972423-MUMS(6867) to make your homecoming mum or garter something you will always treasure.

CISD News
From the Desk of Donny O’Dell Superintendent of Schools Celina Independent School District On behalf of our Celina ISD School Board members, administrators, faculty and staff, I would like to welcome you back for the 20152016 school year. As I begin my 42nd year in education, I am excited for the wonderful learning opportunities that the students of our great district will experience during the coming year. Our campus personnel have been participating in many workshops throughout the summer months in order to provide our students with the best tools to foster their knowledge in areas of the curriculum that will open pathways to their future endeavors. These tools on our secondary campuses will provide opportunities for our students to develop and master the latest applications that the technology world has to offer, thus creating a student that is not only well rounded academically, but technology driven as well. As you become more acquainted with our individual campuses, you will notice familiar faces, as well as many new staff members that now call Celina HOME. Our district is extremely fortunate to employ an amazing group of administrators, teachers and staff members who understand that Celina ISD strives to do what is

in the best interest of the children we serve. We feel very blessed to welcome new staff members to our family that hold our ideals to their hearts and will provide our students with not only the tools for success, but also a love for learning that will last them a lifetime. Parents play a crucial role in the success of our students and again, we find ourselves fortunate to work with such an outstanding group of students, parents and/or guardians. We ask that you stay involved whether you become a member of C.A.R.E, one or both of our PTA organizations, or continue to take an active role monitoring your child’s Parent Portal account. We also have many parents who volunteer their time at one of our five campuses or become involved with campus clubs or dedicate their time coaching one of our many Academic UIL contest teams. There are many opportunities to serve and we continue to be humbled by those that seek out those positions to help our students and staff members on a regular basis. Your generosity of your time is appreciated greatly throughout the district. As a district, we continue to perfect our avenues of communication. Our Celina ISD website will carry all the latest news from around our district. All campuses are equipped with Facebook pages as well as Twitter accounts. If you are a Facebook user, in order to get notifications on our campus pages, you must first
“Like Us” and then go to “Get Notifications” and click on “See First.” This will send updates to your phone or personal computer. Our “CelinaISD” District page is updated daily with information regarding district and athletic events. The “CelinaCTOWN” page will carry information for our Celina High School students concerning CTOWN tutoring schedules and hours of operation, plus any special events such as CTOWN Coffee Hour for Parents or upcoming parenting workshops hosted by our District Liaisons. Many of our campuses send home newsletters with their students on a weekly or monthly basis to further keep you updated with the latest information concerning your child’s campus. School Messenger is activated to deliver messages to your cell phone or landline regarding important information concerning the district and/or individual campuses. Over the many years that I have been involved with education, it has been my honor to serve as Superintendent of Schools for this great district. The 2015-2016 school year will be filled with new and exciting opportunities for our students and faculty. As Dr. Seuss once said, “Today is your day! You’re off to great places. So get on your way!” Congratulations and Good Luck Celina ISD Faculty and Students! Let’s get on our way to a Great Year!

Celina Fire Station 1: CELINA Magazine’s Interview with Assistant Fire Chief Kyle Mills By Melissa Cromwell The new site location on Preston Road... we’ve heard this location will make your response times faster? Is this true? Why was this spot chosen? The new location of the fire station will increase response times to the majority of the city. It gives us prime access to Preston Road which allows us to get most places in the city quickly. This spot was chosen because the land was available, it is centrally located and gives us immediate access to Preston road. What upgrades did you receive with this new building? Virtually every part of the building was an upgrade. We now have some of the latest technology to help us do our jobs with more efficiency. This is the first city building to have an emergency generator. This allows us to
12 CELINA Magazine | September 2015
provide adequate services during power failures. We also added a new outdoor warning siren to this building, and we have added our own WeatherBug station which gives the community the ability to have real time weather data straight to their computer or mobile device. How will these upgrades make you more efficient and help our firemen? Every upgrade we have made makes our firemen more efficient. We have access control and video security and the latest in computer technology to make us more efficient. The layout of the building is designed with efficiency in mind. The ultimate goal is to get out of the station and respond to emergency calls quickly and safely. Sitting together a year from now, what do you see the Fire Department achieving with new Fire Station number 1? I think the biggest dream we have is just to provide amazing customer service to the citizens of Celina. Fire Station 1 gives us great access to Preston Road and a lot of visibility to the community. We hope that we can use this building as a tool to serve our community to the highest level possible. Who is your personal role model? My dad is my personal role model. He is a hardworking, moral and ethical man. He
raised all of us to think for ourselves, but most importantly, treat people the way you want to be treated. I hope that one day, I will be able to be half of what my dad is. My dad taught me that family comes above all else. It is something that I try to pass onto new firemen when they start. I always tell them, as long as you treat everyone you come into contact with like you would treat your family, you will be fine‌

In His Presence Seeking the Divine When it Comes to Forgiveness By Pastor Chris Kouba
All of us, at one time or another, have struggled with forgiveness. It is not an easy thing to do—to seek forgiveness or to forgive. As humans, it just seems to go against our nature. The 18th-century English poet Alexander Pope profoundly and succinctly said: “To err is human; to forgive, divine.” And truly, we need to seek the divine, the words of Jesus, to guide us on the matter of forgiveness. In the book of Matthew, Jesus teaches on how to deal with those who sin against you. And after hearing about the importance of not overlooking or ignoring sin, the apostle Peter wanted clarification. Matthew 18:21 says: Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” It was a trick question all along … at least that is what Peter thought he was asking. He wasn’t interested in how he could be most obedient to God’s commands. Rather, he wanted to see how he could still get credit but establish the limits to the obedience. Peter wasn’t interested in following the rules; he was most interested in the exception to the rule. The religious leaders of the day taught that you were only required to forgive someone three times; so Peter’s question implies more than double what was expected. But he could have never expected Jesus’ response: Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times (Matthew 18:22). Jesus makes it very clear … but Peter doesn’t get it. When we think of forgiveness, we usually think about it as an event. You sin against someone … you go to the person and apologize … and then you say, “Will you forgive me?” Hopefully, the person will say yes … the event is over, and you move on. Jesus teaches us that forgiveness is not just an event, it is also a process. He isn’t providing a formal number where you only get 490 chances and then your limit is up. Instead, He is saying that you are to always and continually and repeatedly forgive. It means you forgive again when you remember the offense later; you forgive when you see that person, and it reminds you what he or she did; you forgive that person once again when you relive the consequences and the pain and the wreckage the actions against you have caused. The famous Christian author C.S. Lewis put it this way: “Everyone says forgiveness is a lovely idea until they have something to forgive.” It isn’t going to be easy, but it is the only way you can experience freedom. The question you need to ask yourself today is: “Whom do I need to forgive … again … and again … and again?” Dr. Chris Kouba is Lead Pastor at the North Campus of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Prosper. Led by Dr. Jack Graham, Prestonwood also has campuses in Plano and Dallas.
