Add Light with DIY Decor When your home decor needs an upgrade, but expensive, ready-made items aren’t in your budget, DIY projects can be an easy and affordable solution for revitalizing rooms in your home. One simple way to enhance the character of a room is with lighted elements. Add a glistening, on-trend look with a lighted canvas, which features twinkling lights that dance on shimmering glitter to lend a glam look to any room. The project, designed by crafting experts at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, can be adapted to any palette; just change out the color of the glitter to match the hues in your favorite room. For a charming, subtle accent, this frosted jar and doily not only adds quaint flair – the jar also provides a soft glow of light. It’s perfect nestled on a shelf or sitting atop a dresser with similarly styled items. Find more creative ideas to bring a touch of light to your home decor at joann.com.

Glitter and Lights Canvas Crafting time: 3-5 hours Skill level: Intermediate Supplies and Tools: Foam brush 18-by-24-inch canvas Decoupage medium Ultra-fine to coarse gold glitter Craft knife 3 packages battery-operated warm white LED moon lights Duct tape Protected work surface Use foam brush to cover entire canvas with layer of decoupage medium. Working 12 inches from canvas, dust canvas with glitter. Apply glitter so bottom is fully covered, fading into less glitter at top to create an ombre effect. Apply additional layers of glitter to achieve a thick consistency at bottom. Mix types of glitters to create dimension. Apply thin layer of decoupage medium over entire canvas to seal glitter. Tip: Ensure base layer is completely dry before applying top coat to avoid smearing glitter. Poke small hole in back of canvas with craft knife. Push tip of moon light through hole and secure in place with duct tape. Repeat, adding holes and lights over entire canvas. Continue ombre effect by placing more lights at bottom of canvas and less toward top. Apply layers of duct tape to hold lights securely in place on canvas.

Aubrey Education Foundation (AEF) will be holding the 18th Annual Red, White, and Blue Gala, benefitting AISD students and teachers, on March 9, 2017 at Hidden Springs. AEF Executive Director, Rhonda Brawner, said she expects approximately 250 attendees at this year's event. “This year the High School Jazz band will be playing and we have Earl Stander on board as our auctioneer, stated Brawner. Some of the items available for bid will be Disneyland park tickets, professional sport tickets, passes for various museums in the metroplex, YETI cups, themed baskets, gift cards and a handmade Firepit donated from FFA. Last year, with the support of the community, endowments, donations, and fundraising such as the Gala, AEF was able to give $25,750 in scholarships to 22 graduating seniors and awarded $25,306 of Technology and Innovative Teaching Grants to 14 AISD teachers for educational tools. The funds from the grants were distributed over each of the AISD campuses. If you are interested in supporting AEF at this event, there are several opportunities including sponsorship, monetary donations, auction item donations and attendance at the event. Individual tickets are $30 and the dress is business casual. For more information about the event or to be a sponsor, please visit www.aubreyef.org.

Innovative Community Building Futures for Adults with ASD Driven by the lack of quality options available for their son, a couple from Dallas plans to build a $12 million community called 29 Acres for young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD. Clay Heighten and Debra Caudy, both retired medical doctors, are spearheading the innovative project, which is slated to break ground in Crossroads in the Fall of 2017. For Heighten and Caudy, the idea for 29 Acres started right at home. Their 19-year old son, Jon, was diagnosed at age 2 with ASD. Because Jon falls on the severe end of the spectrum, he requires more constant and supportive care. When Jon was about 15 years old, the two realized he was quickly approaching adulthood and found the options available for individuals like Jon were extremely limited. “There is a real lack of ongoing support and safe housing for young adults with ASD”, said Caudy. The majority of the young adults diagnosed with ASD transition from childhood to their parents couches, unfortunately, which causes isolation, depression and lessens the quality of life. And when the aging parents are no longer able to care for them, they are caught in an emergent situation and forced into the system of group homes and sub-par care. Unwilling to accept this for Jon, Heighten and Caudy decided to look outside the box for a broader scope of living arrangements that would offer ongoing support and allow these adults to be successful. Caudy said, “They want to be successful and have a purpose. That normalcy of every day life we take for granted, they truly desire”. 29 Acres will be completed in phases, the first of which, will be approximately 4-6, two-bedroom and four-bedroom homes with private bath, kitchen, and living areas, as well as a smaller community center that can be expanded as the development grows. The housing community design is research-based and will feature safety and security including a high staff-to-resident ratio in order to support those with even the highest needs. For some, 29 Acres may be a first home as they as they go through the transition program to learn skills enabling them to live more independently, and for others, it may be a permanent residence. Residents will be encouraged to be involved in the design of their individual plan and not everyone will be a good fit for an independent-living program. “It will be about what makes sense for each individual”, said Caudy. 29 Acres will offer various programs and amenities, such as fitness and recreation, vocation, education, and leisure. The community also has plans to partner with the University of North Texas for training and research opportunities. When completed, the community will have 15 homes and be able to house up to 60 residents. February 2017 | 76227Magazine.com

1 cup quinoa, rinsed and drained

Barbecue Sauce:

2 1/2 cups water

2 tablespoons Borden Butter

2 large eggs

Heat oven to 350 F and spray 8-by-8-inch baking dish with nonstick spray.

To make sandwiches: Heat smoker to 210 F.

In medium skillet, heat oil over medium heat until hot. Add onion and garlic, and saute 1 minute, or until onion is tender.

Smoke pork shoulder 3-5 hours, until internal temperature reaches 150 F. Remove and wrap in aluminum foil. Refrigerate overnight. Remove excess fat from pork. Remove from heat. In large bowl, whisk together eggs and milk. Stir quinoa into egg mixture and whisk in 1/2 cup cheese. Spread in prepared baking dish and sprinkle with remaining cheese. Bake 30 minutes. Garnish with chopped tomato and green onion, if desired. Serve immediately.
