Each year, millions of Americans make New Year’s resolutions to achieve personal or professional goals. For many, that means focusing on improving health and wellness. You tell yourself this is going to be the year you join a gym, eat better or drink more water. Yet that commitment often falls short, as a recent survey suggests less than 10 percent of Americans achieve their resolutions.
3. Add some sparkle to your day. Sparkling water is a great option for those who favor something other than plain water. With zero calories and no added sugar, sparkling water is a delicious, refreshing choice for healthy hydration. When entertaining, consider adding a DIY sparkling water bar to your repertoire – just put out some sparkling water, sliced fruits, vegetables and herbs, and your guests can do the rest.
There are many reasons people fall short of their goals, including setting the bar too high or being overly restrictive, which can lead to small failures and setbacks. However, there are easy ways to get back on track. A Global Water Survey, published by Nestlé Waters and Kantar TNS, revealed 94 percent of American respondents believe drinking water helps maintain a healthy lifestyle.
4. Turn your water bottle into your travel companion. The survey revealed that American consumers are 72 percent more likely to drink water in their cars. Whether you’re commuting to work or running errands, you’re constantly on the go and a bottle of water could be your best companion.
One key to jumpstarting a healthy lifestyle is staying hydrated by drinking more water. With so much focus on food, beverage choices are often overlooked. With no calories or added sugars, water is a smart choice to stay hydrated. Here are four tips from Sarah Ladden, a registered dietitian and Director, Nutrition, Health and Wellness at Nestlé Waters North America, to help you stay hydrated in 2017 and beyond. 1. Good habits shouldn’t feel bad. Overly restrictive commitments can set you up for failure. Instead, adopt small and manageable changes to your daily routine and they can add up to big changes over time. For example, swapping just one 12-ounce (140 calorie), sugar-sweetened beverage with water each day could cut up to 50,000 calories and more than 65 cups of sugar from your diet in a year. 2. Replace what you lose. Adults are made up of 60 percent water, which needs to be replenished throughout the day to help you maintain a proper fluid balance. Keep water within reach all day – a pitcher on the kitchen counter, a bottle in your car’s center console, a refillable bottle at your desk – to keep healthy hydration top of mind.

G rowing up working with his parents on an 80-acre tulip farm in Holland, Pieter Koeman was used to the beautiful landscape. Almost 40 years ago, Koeman’s parents, Piet and Afra, started a horticultural farm with a handful of seeds and a spade. According to Pieter, his parents added leeks, chrysanthemums, irises and eventually tulips to their Netherlands farm, setting into motion a future in Texas, he had yet to even dream. In 2011, the elder Koeman passed away at the age of 69 and the family decided to look at changing the business, which had been mostly wholesale, to a place where they could meet the people who enjoy and purchase their tulips. The family visited Texas and settled on a spot in Pilot Point, a small town nestled in Denton County. “It was like falling in love with someone, it was that strong,” says Pieter’s sister, Cora Koeman. The entire Koeman family, including Pieter’s wife Petra, their children Pieter Jr., and Hillary along with Afra and Cora work throughout the year for Texas Tulip’s 5-week season. In addition to the arduous task of preparing the fields each season, Pieter does a lot of research into the differing varieties of tulips.

Riding
High By Renee Marler
For nearly five years, Born 2 Be Equestrian Center has been using horses to help children and adults with physical, emotional, or developmental needs. Born 2 Be, located at Winterhaven Ranch in Aubrey, provides lessons in horseback riding as well as carriage driving lessons for it’s students. Tracy McCarty, Born 2 Be’s Head Instructor, said they currently have 25 students, aged 4+, with a broad spectrum of needs from Multiple Sclerosis, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Downs Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, and varying emotional or developmental disorders. McCarty grew up in Oklahoma riding horses and showing in 4-H. When she moved to Texas in 1995 she had the opportunity to work for Terri Barnes, one of the first physical therapists in the United States to study Hippotherapy in Germany. From her work with Barnes, McCarty knew she wanted to begin a career in the therapeutic riding industry and just two years later earned her Registered Instructor status through NARHA, which is now Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International, or PATH. “Our students really connect to the horses. There’s a beautiful connection that covers both the physical and emotional,” said McCarty. Often times individuals with special needs find group therapies to be overwhelming or they simply are not prepared for the varying needs, which is one reason Born 2 Be believes their programs are so successful. McCarty says, “We provide a safe space with a small, family environment that our students really respond well to.” McCarty says that the space they have now, as well as a great group of staff and volunteers, will allow them to double the number of students while still keeping that same level of care. Currently Born 2 Be has 9 therapy horses and 2 minis. The mini’s are typically used for carriage driving instruction, but can be used for smaller students as well.

Winterhaven Ranch and Born 2 Be are proud to host the Area 11 Equestrian Special Olympics on April 1. This event can draw more than eight area therapeutic equestrian centers and riders, which could number eighty or more. Trends to Enhance Your Outdoor Living Space
N
o matter the season or the region, outdoor living is more popular than ever, as homeowners look to “bring the indoors out” and create spaces that are true extensions of the home. The newest designs in outdoor living spaces do not simply feature the look of the indoors, but the functionality as well. “Advances in all-weather materials have made it possible for homeowners to enjoy more and more of their favorite activities outside,” said Adam Zambanini, vice president of marketing for Trex Company, the world’s No. 1 decking and railing brand and leader in high-performance, low-maintenance outdoor living products. “The movement toward ‘outdoor rooms’ has evolved into fully functional outdoor kitchens and entertainment centers that make it even more difficult to determine where the indoors end and the outdoors begin.” Regardless of the size of your deck – or budget – these simple tips from the experts at Trex can add interior function to your outdoor oasis: Absolute Al Fresco While grilling and al fresco dining are longtime hallmarks of backyard entertaining, outdoor kitchens are now finally living up to their name.

From storing seat cushions to keeping drinks cold, today’s outdoor kitchen accessories can make outdoor spaces look as put-together as the rest of the home. Among the newest advancements is the Trex Outdoor Kitchens collection, which features outdoor cabinetry and functional elements such as trash bins, ice chests and storage drawers that eliminate the need for back-and-forth trips inside the home. Railing Redefined Even railings have taken on a more functional role in today’s backyards. One of the most popular trends is “cocktail railing,” which provides a flat surface for drinks and plates. By using a matching deck board to create a shelf for the top rail, you can achieve a look that complements your home’s deck, while making great use of space. Lights, Please Lighting is another “bright” idea for adding versatility to the outdoors. Lighting systems that incorporate deck lighting and other exterior lighting work together to create ambiance that can be adjusted for any setting. By choosing which outdoor elements to highlight, it’s easy to change the look of an outdoor living space without moving any furniture.
Connection Protection The idea of enjoying a favorite show or movie outdoors has always been enticing, but not exactly practical. However, with advancements in both equipment and equipment storage, enjoying the big screen experience in the great outdoors has never been easier. Electronics manufacturers now offer televisions and entertainment equipment specifically designed for the outdoors, taking into consideration differences in lighting and outdoor acoustics. Meanwhile, storage options now include durable, wall-mounted television and entertainment centers that beautifully conceal and protect pricey electronics from the elements. Material Matters Just because people are spending more time on their decks doesn’t mean they’re willing to put in extra hours for maintenance. Wood alternatives, particularly wood-plastic composites, are especially popular due to their low-maintenance features. Unlike wood, composite decking such as Trex Transcend, resists fading, staining, scratching and mold – and won’t rot, warp, crack or splinter. No sanding, staining or painting is required, and food and drink spills wash off easily with soap and water. The latest generation of composite decking also features wood-grain patterns and rich, saturated colors that look and feel more natural than ever before. I was excited to try many recipes, but I was hesitant to try a pot roast. I’m not trying to brag, but my slow cooker pot roast is pretty amazing after 8-10 hours of cooking and I didn’t think I could improve on perfection. I was wrong. I was not only able to improve the taste of the pot roast, but I did it in about 90 minutes!
Follow this recipe and taste for yourself.
Set Instant Pot® to Saute setting and allow it to heat Add 2 tbsp olive oil into the pot (enough to cover bottom) Add minced garlic and onions and saute approximately 1 minute Add roast and let it sear 2 minutes on each side Mix 2 cups of water with the onion soup mix and pour on top of roast Close lid and set top dial to Sealing Cook on Manual setting for 70 minutes Vent Open and add carrots and potatoes Close lid and set top dial to Sealing Cook on Manual setting for 10 minutes Vent and enjoy!
