CISD News
From the Desk of Mr. Rick DeMasters Celina ISD Superintendent of Schools Leo Tolstoy once said, “Spring is the time of plans and projects.” This statement rings true as I gaze across the conference table scattered with construction projects, testing manuals, academic, music, and athletic competition dates and the ever looming 2017 graduation day schedule. Spring is always a challenging time for school districts here and across the United States, where it seems there are not enough days to schedule the many events offered throughout the remaining months of the school year. Try as we might, there will always be overlapping events, but this is a true testament to the strength of our district programs. The end of March brought the first round of High School UIL Academic District contests. Sixteen CHS students qualified in 10 events for Regionals to be held on April 8th, at Texas A&M Commerce. We had four 1st Place Team awards and placed 2nd overall as a district. Congratulations to the following Regional Advancers; Taylor Applehans, Stockton Blanco, Jocelyn Vasquez-Cabrera, Michael Entrop, Gage Gibbs, Timothy Green, Peyton Hatcher, John Hudson, Celeste Knowles, Nate Mathews, Chance McCall, Joscyllin Murrell, Samuel Snyder, Kaitlyn Vana, Jared Weaver, and Kaitlyn Zdrojewski. CHS Junior Alex Rangel took 8th place in the UIL State Powerlifting competition. We are very proud of this young man’s accomplishments this

year. Our CHS Golf Teams started their District Tournament during the last week of March and will finish district play on Monday, April 3rd. Our baseball, softball and track teams are continuing their district schedules through the month of April. Our Celina Bobcat Baseball Team has been given the honor of hosting the Miracle League All-Stars game, which will be played at Bobcat Field on Saturday, April 8. The game will start at 9:00am, and if you have never had the privilege of attending a Miracle League game, it is truly a blessing for all in attendance. Each of our Bobcat players, along with Krum’s Varsity and JV players will “buddy up” and help one of the Miracle League players during the game. After the completion of the Miracle League All-Star game, our Celina Bobcat Varsity Baseball Team will take on Krum starting at noon, with Junior Varsity to follow, giving you and your family a great day at the ballpark! The C.A.R.E. Foundation held their annual Ladies Brunch and Auction on April 1, 2017 in the Celina High School cafeteria. This year, the C.A.R.E. organization invited the Celina District Teachers and Paraprofessionals of the Year to attend. They wanted to honor these individuals for being selected by their campus peers for the positive work ethic they display every day. The following teachers and paraprofessionals will also be recognized at the Celina School Board meeting held during the month of May.

Colorado Street. Students who will be enrolling should attend with their parent and/or guardian. The morning session will be held from 9:00-11:00am, and the afternoon session will run from 2:00pm7:00pm. Enrollment forms will be available at registration, but if you are not able to attend one of the sessions listed, you may register at the Celina Elementary campus after April 6th. Information on what forms are needed can be found on the district website. Last, but not least, our Celina High School Varsity Choir has been asked to perform the National Anthem for the Frisco Rough Riders game scheduled for Tuesday, April 11th, starting at 11:05am against the Tulsa Drillers. Congratulations to Mr. Adam LeMaire and his students on this honor. Our Junior High and High School band students have a busy month ahead of them as well, due to numerous UIL contests scheduled throughout the month. We wish them all good luck as they prepare to compete. As we wind down the school year, our calendars seem to become consumed with places to be and events that schedule into our free time. We tell ourselves there are just not enough days to get everything completed, but all we need to do is slow down, enjoy a concert or spend a day at the ballpark. There will always be time in the schedule to watch the great things that our students accomplish!

Frank Cannon Super Agents
Frank (aka Frankie) has been a licensed Realtor since 1985 and has worked with a couple of the finest brokers in North Texas: Dan Christie and Billy Herrin. Frank learned by watching and listening to these two outstanding brokers answer his endless questions, “These two always did the right thing for everyone involved in a transaction”, Frank said. Mr. Cannon is currently the Designated Broker for Goetz Realty and Development located in Gunter, TX. He enjoys working with new agents and seasoned agents as well. “I teach and I learn,” Frank says. “Jon Goetz’s approach to real estate is energetic and infectious, our goals and ambitions are very well aligned,” he continued. Frank grew up in the small farming town of Italy, Texas. He learned his work ethic by watching his parents go to work every day to earn a living for their family. Frank is the youngest of the family’s four children and watched as his two brothers and sister became carbon copies of their parents’ work ethic. “If you were a Cannon, everyone knew you were honest and hard-working,” Frank said. During the Viet Nam war, Frank joined the United States Marine Corps and attained the rank of Sergeant (E-5) in under two years. He served with the 3rd Bn 4th Marines as an infantry machine gunner in Viet Nam. While in boot camp, Frank was chosen by his Platoon Commander to be the platoon guide and maintained that position throughout boot camp. Working the freight docks supported Frank in his efforts to obtain a college degree and become the first Cannon to do so. He graduated from North Texas State University with a degree in Education and Political Science. “I did not know if I wanted to coach football or become a lawyer, so I prepped for both.” Frank was a successful sales manager while working with a couple of Fortune 500 companies; he enjoyed watching the people he tutored become successful. He always taught his sales people to be “solution oriented” in their sales efforts. “Find the problem, then offer a solution,” he would say. Real Estate is and always has been his passion. Since the mid 80s he has maintained a real estate license and has represented buyers, sellers and investors in hundreds of transactions as well as his personal real estate transactions. “With the Goetz family of agents and working with Jon Goetz, I am exactly where I am supposed to be! “Visit us and see for yourself why we say what we say. Then see if we do what we say,” -Frank Cannon

Here it Grows: 2017 Celina Garden and Market Tour New Venues, Organic Foods and Handcrafted Goods By Lisa Ferguson
Tickets are on sale now for the 2017 Celina Garden and Market Tour - an exclusive showcase of eight private-home gardens, farms and area wineries, as well as the new Garden of Oz educational facility - scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 10. This popular biennial tour, which drew hundreds of attendees from throughout North Texas in 2015, will be presented rain or shine. Presented by the Celina Garden Club, the self-guided tour winds through the picturesque countryside of Celina, providing stunning views of its vast farmlands and gently rolling terrain as well as a rare glimpse of the gardens at several of the area’s most impressive residences. “There isn’t another garden tour like it anywhere in North Texas,” said Celina Garden Club President Sue Verrill, whose own Caudalie Crest Winery is a featured stop on the tour.
14
CelinaMagazine.com | April 2017
At the winery, tourgoers will learn about the winemaking process and (for a nominal fee) can taste several of its award-winning varietals. A special honeybee exhibit and several honey-extraction demonstrations are also scheduled to take place onsite during tour. Other venues on the tour include a “fairy garden” filled with whimsical statuary and native-Texas grasses; Golden Farms, which follows strict Permaculture-design specifications; the popular Eden Hill Winery & Vineyard; Cartermere Farms, a 300acre family owned, organic farm; a water-conscious xeriscape-principled property; and Maryland Farms, where themed gardens surround a lovingly restored century-old farmhouse. New to this year’s tour is the Garden of Oz, a 7,200-square-foot educational garden for local students that opened in 2016 at Celina Elementary School. It was conceived by members of the Celina Garden Club, which allocated funds raised through the 2015 Celina Garden Tour to spearhead its
construction. Another new addition is the assortment of organic foods and handcrafted products that will be available for purchase at several of the tour venues, including homemade preserves, fresh organic produce and farm-raised meats, artisan soaps and olive oils. The 2017 Celina Garden Tour and Market will highlight the burgeoning area’s natural beauty and resources, according to Pam Collins, who oversees special events and fundraising efforts for the Celina Garden Club. “This really is a country tour where you’ll see fields and pastures, and cattle and donkeys,” she said. Because many of the homes in Celina are set on acreage and situated off the road, “People don’t often get a chance to explore and appreciate our gardens,” Collins said. “They are very different from the heavily manicured gardens you’ll find on tours in other cities, but they are equally as beautiful. I think people will be pleasantly surprised.”
We look forward to serving you with a mortgage strategy to make your dream of home ownership come true!
Advance tickets are $20, and are available online at www.celinagardenclub. org for pickup on the day of the event in Celina’s historic downtown square, near Walnut and Ohio Streets. Tickets are also on sale at four area retailers: Annie Jack Design & General Store, 222 W. Walnut St., Celina; D&L Farm and Home, 811 N. Louisiana Drive, Celina; Texas Seasons Nursery, 807 N. Preston Road, Celina; and Cristina’s Stone & Garden Center, 14400 Preston Road, Frisco. Additionally, tickets can be purchased on the day of the tour for $25 beginning at 8 a.m. in Celina’s downtown square. As a special offer, the first 350 people to purchase their 2017 Celina Garden and Market Tour tickets will receive a free tote bag. For more information, please contact Lisa Ferguson, Publicity Chair for the Celina Garden Club, at lmsferguson@ yahoo.com or call 469-202-2193. About the Celina Garden Club Founded in 1945, the Celina Garden Club’s mission is to educate and stimulate the knowledge; to share our resources and experiences; and to enjoy fellowship with other gardeners through monthly meetings, field trips and projects. Club members actively participate in civic improvement programs, which include sponsoring an annual scholarship for students interested in environmental-related studies. With funds from its 2015 tour, the Celina Garden Club planned and executed a garden and learning center at Celina Elementary School. Proceeds from this year’s tour will assist the club in continuing its community outreach and beautification projects.

Small Town
Big Screen
By Renee Marler
Four Celina High School Broadcast Journalism & Production students’ short film was selected for screening at the 2017 South by Southwest Film Festival in March. Midori Brown, Pavan Advani, Jordan Harklau, and Kaitlyn Vana’s film titled, “Be Anyone, Do Anything” was selected as one of only 22 films in all genres out of the more than 200 that were submitted. CHS teacher Kent Smith, who oversaw the project and ultimately made the submission to South by Southwest, received the news via email. “I was shocked. Because of the time restrictions they put on the student films, we had to send in a five-minute version that I didn’t feel was putting our best foot forward. Our full 12 1/2-minute version is a much stronger, more complete work. Despite that, the work the kids put in was good enough to land them a spot in an Oscar qualifying festival that many professionals spend their whole life trying to get into and never do,” said Smith. Smith originally approached Brown with the idea, who jumped at the opportunity. Brown, who won the 2016 State Championship for traditional animation with “Help Wanted,” became very enthusiastic and inspired by film when she took her first film class her sophomore year. Together, Brown and Smith put together a team that resulted in magic on screen. Vana had very little experience with filming due to her being in the print division of Celina TV, but they knew her eye for photography and ability to tell a story and do great in-depth interviews would be a huge asset. Advani was originally chosen for his business-like attitude to balance out the team and keep focus, but he became much more. “It turns out that as we went, he became strong with the camera and eventually developed into one of the best editors there ever may be at the high school level,” stated Smith. The final member of the team needed to be someone who would have passion for film, a creative eye, and the confidence that would allow him or her to speak to anyone, anywhere. Harklau fit the bill perfectly. “It was such an amazing experience to work with Mr. Smith and this incredible team,” said Harklau.
16
CelinaMagazine.com | April 2017
The team started its filming at Fan Expo, which is Dallas’ Comic-con, just a week into summer break. After many 12-hour days, and hundreds of additional hours spent filming and editing, it was finally complete. “Be Anyone, Do Anything”, the first ever film from CHS screened at South by Southwest, features a woman named Krystle Starr who uses her love of cosplay to encourage others to be themselves and pursue their dreams, despite obstacles or perception. Starr volunteers at My Possibilities in Plano, the first full day continuing program in Collin County designed to educate and create purpose for adults with cognitive disabilities, where she has opened new doors to cosplay and comics for her students. “South by Southwest was an incredible experience that opened my eyes to what a future in the film industry would be like,” Brown said. Soon after the film debuted, Smith started getting contacted by festivals all over the country who wanted them such as The Seattle International Film Festival, Tacoma National Film Festival, and even a festival in Liverpool, England. Smith added, “The best part is we get to put the full version out at these festivals so we can properly represent what the kids did. I don’t think people truly realize how big of a deal this really was and how much this has truly changed these kids’ lives. This is something that is going to impact college and job opportunities for them for years to come.” Brown and Advani have been named directors for next year’s staff. Vana is the editor-in-chief of the print side and Harklau will serve as senior advisor. To view the film you can visit sxsw.com and search under the Film Festival Screening schedule.

Christ in Motion
While many people were enjoying sleeping in on the first Saturday morning of spring break, over 50 members of First Baptist Church in Celina were up early loading busses for the 6th annual mission trip to Acuna, Mexico. FBC Pastor, Kevin Lykins, has been leading the Celina group, ranging in size from 40-90 volunteers, each spring break since 2012, but was ministering to the people in Acuna years before he was led to Celina. “I was a part of a group who went to Africa in 2001, but wanted to do something closer to allow more people the opportunity,” Lykins said. “A friend of mine told me about Acuna and during my first visit, my heart broke for the people and knew this is where God wanted me.” Lykins, along with local contractors and FBC members Scott Collins, and Mike Lohman, traveled to Acuna in December to assess the needs and plan the projects the team would complete during the trip. In past years, FBC Celina has built and roofed houses, added on to buildings, remodeled facilities, and painted a park. This year, they decided to construct two buildings, a children's ministry building and a kitchen, to add on to a current church structure. Pam Peters and her family have been able to make the seven-hour trek to Acuna each of the six years. With the recent political uncertainty between the two countries, there was some concern about how the team would be received, but Peters said, “They were as kind and welcoming as always.”
18
CelinaMagazine.com | April 2017
Acuna has a population of just over 180,000, but the average family earns only $60 per week, making it difficult to provide for the most basic of needs. “We saw mothers waiting in lines just for one package of diapers,” said Peters. The team works from sun up to sun down, only resting to pray or worship with the Acuna people. Each evening, they cross over to the United States side to the First Baptist Church in Del Rio where they are set up with separate male and female sleeping quarters. “I find it so amazing that so many of our youth would choose to give up their spring break to serve and be able to see that we don't live like much of the rest of the world but we can, with God, make a difference,” said Peters. “It is physically exhausting but the spiritual fulfillment in seeing what God does in the hearts of not only the people of Acuna, but in our group as well, is the most rewarding experience,” Lykins stated. “The church isn't somewhere we go or something we do, it's who we are, and our prayer during this week in Acuna is that they see the body of Christ in motion.” The mission trip is completely free of cost to anyone at FBC who wishes to serve and is funded by garage sales and other giving.
