The Buzz of a New Season uzz. It’s the sound of bees around Springtime flowers. The sound of neon signs outside of new businesses and a general feeling in the air during this busy time of year. It only takes a brief look at the calendar to ask the question, “Where has the time gone?” One minute we’re cleaning up after the Christmas season, and in what seems like only a few weeks later, we’re wearing Easter shoes and anticipating prom season. If you blink, it all goes by in a flash. It has been a great season here at Cedarbrook Media. The friends we’ve made, as well as the community events and businesses we’ve seen open and flourish, have made an impact on us both personally and professionally. There’s no denying that our little city is growing, and we appreciate the opportunity to be along for the ride. We believe that like any small town, the community takes the most pride in what is their own. Our neighbors, our sports teams, our businesses, all seem to focus around one specific resource. Our children. We drop them of at kindergarten, see them through the early years of lunch boxes and construction paper pictures. Until one day we turn around they are eye level getting their braces off. Then, before you know it, they’re driving to their first day of their Senior year in their first car. Time stops for no one and in the blink of an eye it’s on to a different season. Springtime is a very special time for us as a family, but also as business owners. Through our journey as publishers we’ve had the opportunity to meet forever friends, photograph hometown athletes and watch the kids of our community grow up during the process. Jason’s love for photography stems from the desire to preserve the moments in his own children’s lives and has an appreciation for capturing and preserving those memories for other parents as well. No matter what the seasons of life bring our way, we’re happy to be doing life together and by together, we mean with you, the fellow citizens of Celina. Let’s gear up for a successful graduation season for our Class of 2018. From The Desk of Rick DeMasters It’s hard to believe that dismissal for the 2017-2018 school year is less than two months away. With that being said, the end of the year also signals that STAAR testing is upon us. Our campus administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals and staff members have continued to seek new and creative methods to engage, motivate, and prepare their students for the upcoming testing season.
approaching test dates. For parents, the Texas Education Agency created a checklist for parents to use with their children to help them do their best on their exams and are listed below. 1.
Have conversations about the test/exam. Openly discuss the test with your child and reassure them that you are proud of their efforts and hard work. Always be positive and relaxed. Encourage them to do their best, but refrain from pressuring them.
Under the direction of Celina ISD Bilingual/ESL Director Mrs. Olivia Vest, our limited English proficient (LEP) students were assessed through the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) throughout the month of March. Identified students in grades kindergarten through grade 12 are tested in four language domains, which include listening, speaking, reading and writing. Student performance is assessed in terms of their English language proficiency levels to include; beginning, intermediate, advanced, and advanced high. We are extremely proud of the work that our Bilingual/ESL Department is doing to create a successful learning environment for our LEP students.

Are they experiencing test anxiety? The majority of students from one time or another will have some degree of test anxiety. Reassure your child that this is completely normal. Taking deep breaths, short breaks, and filling your mind with positive thoughts can help reduce testing anxiety. A positive mindset and an “I can do this” attitude does make a difference!

Realistic Expectations…It is important that they do their best, but emphasize that the test is only one measure of their academic performance and does not determine a person’s intelligence or worth.
The month of April signals that our students will begin their window of testing for the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, (STAAR) tests. The following includes the grade levels and exams that are scheduled for those students:

Encourage Study Time developing a consistent study time at home can help your child prepare for their tests and feel more comfortable when the day finally arrives.

Rest and Nutrition…Parents can make sure that their children have adequate rest the night before each test and a good breakfast the following morning to get them going in the right direction. Please refrain from scheduling any appointments on testing days, so that your child can focus on doing their best on their test. As a reminder, we ask that parents refrain from eating lunch with their children on scheduled test days, due to the fact that normal daily schedules are disrupted in order to give students the best testing environment possible for success.

Junior Goalkeeper Kinley Bishop said, “This season we’ve had the best chemistry by far. This ability to work well together has allowed us to succeed and grow as a team. I can’t wait to see what next year has in store!!!” Bishop has been phenomenal this year with her saves and has kept Celina competitive. Defender Alyson Cave has scored three goals this year and is a physically strong presence in the middle of the field. Forward Kaitlyn Zdrojewski is tied for top scorer with 5 goals and has made a huge contribution after coming back from a serious knee injury sustained last year. Defender/Forward Emma Short is a tremendously talented newcomer who has also scored 5 goals for the team.

s the weather begins to warm up, the Celina LadyCats soccer team is cranking up the heat on the field. This year the ladies, coached under Steven Nichols, have finished the season in second place for District 5-4A and have not stopped there. The team made history during district play by sweeping Argyle 1-0 in their first game and 3-0 in the second for the first time ever. Coach Nichols expresses his admiration for his team this year, "I am so proud of the girls and their accomplishments this year, as we graduated 95% of our scoring athletes from last year’s team; including Big 12 Freshman of the Year, Haley Berg, who is now perfecting her trade at the University of Texas! They have really come together and grown as a team rapidly." The overall record for the season was 6 wins, 7 losses and 3 ties with a district record of 4 wins, 2 losses and 2 ties. Playoffs begin during the first week of April. As with any team, each player contributes in their own way to the success and personality of the Celina LadyCats soccer team. Coach Nichols took a moment to recognize each player for their contributions on and off the field. And it is easy to see why these ladies have been so successful under that type of leadership. Team Captain Kensey Crysel had this to say, “Throughout the course of this season, we have had the opportunity to grow as a team and encourage each other on and off the field. This family bond among teammates has allowed us to have a successful season and
Defender Kaitlyn Vana made the very difficult move from Central Midfielder to Left Defender to help solidify Celina’s Back Line and made it seamlessly. Defender Jacqueline Keller also made a position swap from Outside Midfielder to Defender and according to Coach Nichols, has probably been most improved player to date, adding tremendous speed and defensive support on the Back Line. “Athlete Abby Daniels has also been tremendous. I call her ‘Athlete’ because she has played almost every position on the field for us this year! I've played her mostly as Center Defender; but she has also excelled as a Forward, as well as Central Midfielder. Abby contributed greatly to our success last year, as a Freshman, and has only added to her legacy as a player here with her performance this season. She is a "shut-down" Defender! She will have a tremendous four-year career here at CHS,” says Nichols. And Outside Midfielder Ashlyn Vana has brought quickness and tremendous technical skill to the LadyCats in her first year here at Celina. "I am so proud to coach these young ladies! Their terrific attitudes, work ethic, and contagious laughter and smiles keep me young! They have had such a tremendous season and are just as successful in the classroom as they are on the field! The best thing anyone could ever say about them is that they are even better human beings!” says Coach Nichols. Other Returning Players & Newcomers that Nichols wanted to recognize are Defender/Midfielder Hope Galyon, who he said was very dedicated, a hard worker and a great teammate who brings toughness and a great attitude to everything she does. Outside Midfielder Kirsten Keller has tremendous speed down the flanks and Outside Midfielder Sierra Perez is a fiery newcomer who is fast and tenacious on the right wing. Central Midfielder Jamie Ownby is also a skilled newcomer to the team who has a tremendous right-footed shot! Midfielder/Goalkeeper Jordyn Redden is a freshman newcomer who has started almost every game and has not

shrunk under the pressure of playing Varsity Soccer. She is very solid as a Defensive Midfielder and is the Goalkeeper of the Future when Kinley graduates! Forward Azalia Martinez is a newcomer who adds a spark of energy to the lineup when she enters games up top! Outside Midfielder/Forward Lizabeth Mueller is an awesome teammate, always has positive energy and is consistently supporting and encouraging the team! And not to be left out, Student Manager Kailey Ownby has been such an asset to the team. She is always so willing to do whatever is necessary to support the team. She keeps stats, helps with practices and equipment, films games, and even had to suit up and play in a game over Spring Break when several players were away! "I am so proud of the girls for how they came together and played as a team this season. It's never easy when a team graduates the senior leadership & production like we had last year; but these girls excelled! It says so much about the kind of people they are, not just the type of players they are. They genuinely care about each other and put the team ahead of themselves. Reality TV Meets Celina, Texas

re and Jon Taylor had reached a point in their lives where they wanted to plant roots. After having rented for years, it was clear that they needed more space, both indoors and outdoors to accommodate their lifestyle with 3 busy children. Even though their tastes, ideas and needs differed, like many young couples, they set out with the help of House Hunters from HGTV and local real estate agent, Ginger Weeks to find the perfect North Texas spot to raise their family. Ginger Weeks and her husband Robert own Remax Pro Advantage, a real estate office in McKinney, Texas. Ginger has been in real estate for 16 years and says that their focus is on North Texas residential listings, in areas that include but are not limited to Celina, Prosper, Van Alstyne and Gunter. Their office opened 18 months ago and Ginger takes pride in the fact that their agents (12 to date) are all very well-rounded and genuinely invested in finding their clients the perfect home, based on their own individual needs. There is no doubt that she leads by example and recently she got to prove just that. Ginger says her first experience with reality TV "Was a huge success and so much fun." If you are a fan of House Hunters, you may have seen the March 14th episode of the popular show titled "Flying the Coop in Texas." Cleverly named because her client, Bre, wanted a homestead that could

also house her chickens. Her ideal choice of home in the beginning was a farmhouse style, with features to accommodate her children who are home schooled. Her husband Jon, on the other hand, is very tech savvy, has a knack for staying on budget and wanted more of a ranch style with smart house technology. One of the main entertainment factors on the show is seeing how the different and sometimes opposite wants and needs of couples are somehow worked through and negotiated by the end of the 30-minute show. The humor element is brought in consistently across episodes making you wonder how such different individuals end up together in the first place. It remains to be true that opposites attract, but the show highlights the fact that with a little compromise, everyone's needs can be met. In TV Land or in real life, you cannot deny how crucial it is to have a Real Estate Agent that listens, mediates and often counsels clients when finding the perfect home. It is a well-known fact that a home purchase can be one of the most stressful life changes you can experience. It can also be the most rewarding. "Meshing individual personalities and quirks combined with the knowledge of what people need as a family unit can create challenges but is also what makes the job that much more rewarding,� says Weeks. The episode highlights 3 homes, all with designated criteria. They needed to be under the budget of $400k, with a large back yard or land, possible new construction, high-tech, with a ranch or farmhouse style, a kitchen the kids can't pass through, and a space to home school with chickens and a sauna. Easy right? Bre and Jon chose between 3 home styles, traditional, ranch and farmhouse. All 3 homes had aspects they loved, but once it came down to making a final
decision the clients ultimately chose a new construction by American Legend Homes in the Light Farms subdivision of Celina, Texas. Although they had originally thought they'd like to be in McKinney, they planted roots in Celina as they were drawn to the fact that the community has so many family-oriented activities and amenities. The spacious home they plan to decorate with a ranch style flair sits on a larger lot with a 3-car garage. They'll have access to a neighborhood garden, community walking trails and a private lake, all of which were a dream come true for this family of 5. The only problem left unsolved by their new find, was that of the chicken debacle. Bre found a home for their feathered friends and will be able to visit and love them from afar. It was all in a day’s work for Ginger, who was thrilled the couple found
exactly what they were looking for. As far as the experience of being on a reality show, she gets to mark it off her bucket list as she has always had an interest in drama and the arts. She says that realtors have a big responsibility that encompasses much more than selling properties. Great agents recognize that they are ultimately responsible for building communities and contributing to the quality of life of the people they have the honor of assisting. The House Hunters episode was a fantastic opportunity for her from a business marketing stand point, but it was also a great opportunity to showcase our little neck of the woods. "It was a pleasure being a part of promoting North Texas and all of the growth and opportunity there is to offer." Which is exactly why she and her family are proud to grow their business, plant roots and make their home here, too.

A Big Day for BIG Taste at Tender Smokehouse

arch 14th was a BIG day at Celina's newest hot spot, Tender Smokehouse. The "Texas-chic" curbside appeal is the perfect marriage of class and grit, that provides a built in, intoxicating and unmistakable aroma of smokey barbeque Heaven. Celina residents, Chamber members, city officials and friends all gathered outside of Celina's newest downtown jewel to celebrate the grand opening and "birthday dream come true" for Tender's owner and pit boss, Dante Ramirez. Ramirez, along with his girlfriend and self-claimed better half Audra, who encouraged him to follow his dream of opening the location, partnered with friends Eddie Bell, Torii Hunter and his wife Katrina to complete the vision for Tender. The group all spoke of the detail that went into the planning and dĂŠcor for the venue, building the business around the luck of the number 5, representing the 5 partners. Tender is open 5 days a week and adds no more than 5 ingredients to their recipes. State Representative Scott Sanford was in attendance to support the 5 friends, declaring that the state flag flew over the Capitol today to honor the opening of the Smoke House. Sanford cleverly pointed out that the star on the Texas Flag he gifted the owners also has 5 points. Tender's doors officially opened on September 5th and their staff, who are

Celina Locals are the Angels Among Us By Jodie Brownd
In one of the most inspirational stories covered by news media as of late, it was with great pride that I followed the story of 18-year-old Caleb Johnson. Caleb, who goes by the nickname “Caleb Electric Brain” recently set out via Facebook, to find the nurse that cared for him at Medical City in McKinney some 17 years ago, when tragedy struck his family in a fatal car crash. The November 22, 2000 accident took both of Caleb’s parents, but spared, not without injury, Caleb and his 4 siblings. His search for Nurse Dennie Miller began by way of a Facebook video he created, that was viewed more than 52 million times. Dennie, who died in 2003, continues to smile down on all parties involved, as this 17-year-old story unfolded and led Caleb to 6 other staff members on the scene that morning. Two of the staff members were Celina’s very own Wendy Gracy, and the very first responder on the scene, McKinney Firefighter and Paramedic David Herron. Gracy, who calls Celina her home, was front and center when the staff members skyped with Caleb via press conference in December. It was a longtime dream come true to see the baby they remembered so vividly, now an appreciative young man expressing his gratitude for their part in making the difference of life and death for him. “Our lives were changed in a moment,” he said. “In the depth of our pain, you were there to care for us and to show us that life is valuable. Some of us you saved directly, but for the rest of us you saved someone important – a brother, a cousin, a nephew.” Although the skype meeting and press conference was one of the highlights of this young man’s life, it wasn’t enough for Caleb. The emotional introduction and exchange of memories set forth a series of events that included Wendy, a surgical liaison, as well as 6 of the other staff members that were there, working their magic in the early morning hours of the tragedy.

Gracy says that the experience was one of the most positive and heartwarming encounters she’s ever been a part of. If the coincidence in all of this has somehow escaped you, there are more “God Winks” as Gracy calls them, that add to the miraculous sentiment of Caleb’s story. On Monday, January 15, 2018, Caleb, his four siblings, and eight other family members traveled to McKinney, Texas to meet “in person” and hug the necks of the heroes that saved he and his siblings. "In this industry, every single patient you work with is special, but there are always those cases with unique circumstances that you don’t ever forget. You send people back out into the world after their ordeals and hope their lives are better for having been treated there,” says Gracy. “We all remembered Caleb as a baby and wondered where he was and what happened to him. It just goes to show that the affect we have on people goes so far, the impact isn’t just about nurses, doctors and patients. The people we encounter are all human beings with families and stories of their own. It is a pleasure to have any role, even if a small one, during what can be life-altering experiences. What
people may not realize, is that they, too, leave an impact on our lives and become a part of the memories that change us as medical professionals and ultimately as people." Wendy recalls having heard about the story of a young man looking for the nurse that saved him and squealed, “THAT’S HIM, THAT’S OUR CALEB!” The reunion brought about many hugs, tears and answers to long asked questions. What could be described as needed closure was actually the springboard to new connections and friendships that have been 17 years in the making. A key piece to the puzzle that had been missing from the story for Caleb and his siblings was provided by Celina resident David Herron. Although Caleb's father was taken in the accident, Herron was able to speak with him as the first responder and reiterate that his heart and sentiment were with his children in his last minutes, asking if they were alright. It brought the children much peace to learn after 17 years, that the two had communicated and that even in his final hours, like any loving father, his children's welfare was his final concern. When asked about the impact the family and this experience has had on Herron, he says his most vivid memory is looking into the eyes of Caleb's sister, Alyse, and having her face forever imprinted into his memory. Alyse was around the same age as his own daughter and that realization created an immediate connection to her, her family and this memory that to this day he appreciates more than ever. This man, who is too humble to have mentioned himself in previous stories, shared with me that he has kept a picture of Caleb's family on his bedroom dresser for 17 years. He prayed for the children in that minivan every day that he woke up, got dressed and went to work. He never knew what happened to the children, who with their juice boxes, tears and confusion marked his memory instantly. He prayed for them then and he prays for them now. Yes, Caleb and his siblings are most definitely alright; they're happy healthy and thriving. There is no doubt that their Mother and Father would be proud of their children as well as the angels that were among them that early morning. We’re all human, and we all have the ability to make life around us better. You never know the impact you have on the lives around you and as fate would have it, this baby with the survivor’s spirit didn’t just find the people who helped save him, he found that they too, had been touched by him. This is further confirmation to all that God puts us in each other’s lives very strategically. What can seem like a tragic ending to any story can be the catalyst that brings thousands of people together in a way that can only be described as divine. Sometimes life deals us unexpected surprises, but if you have the faith and patience to let the story unfold you can look back and see the goodness that is hiding in every detail. The Celina Public Library Celebrates Dr. Seuss’ 114th Birthday By Jodie Brownd
Theodore Seuss Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, would have been proud to step into the 114th birthday celebration thrown in his honor at the Celina Public Library on Saturday, March 5, 2018. The American author and Pulitzer Prize winner is best known for authoring more than 60 children's books under the name Dr. Seuss. The turnout at the birthday celebration is proof that this American icon and creative genius still holds a very special place in the hearts of people of all ages. Guests, including infants, toddlers, preteens and parents, were greeted at the door by familiar faces. Bay Henderson distributed tickets for the chance to win prizes, while Linda Shaw, the Director of Library Services went all out to play the part of the high energy, "think outside of the box" Cat from the 1958 book, The Cat in the Hat. Shaw's passion for children, reading and our community is evident by her enthusiasm. This is the 5th year she has played the eccentric Cat for the artist's birthday, bringing to life Seuss' character that she claims is one of her all-time favorites. The guests were all ears as she slyly read of the Cat that shows up at the house of Sally and her brother on one unsupervised and rainy day. The Cat keeps the children entertained much to the chagrin of their rule-following goldfish. Additional characters from the story also made appearances. Unlike the unruly sidekicks that wreak havoc on the children's home in the story, Thing #1, played by Gabriella Martinez and Thing #2, played by Marlene Martinez, are well known volunteers at the library. They enjoy assisting with activities for local readers because they learned at a young age about the importance of building knowledge through reading books. The story unfolds as the children and their fish become more and more alarmed until the Cat produces a machine that he uses to clean everything up. He then says his goodbyes and disappears just before the children's mother returns home. The story takes you back to an age of wonder that can't help but make you curious as to what would happen if the feline visited your house on a rainy day. It teaches a lesson about following rules and the consequences of circumstances spiraling out of our control. Guests were all smiles by the time the story ended with the children in the tale safe from the proof of the chaos. Shaw wrapped up the story as Thing #1 and Thing #2 led the parade of party goers to a Seuss-themed celebration table where they dined on birthday cookies, cupcakes and refreshments. him a copy of one of Seuss' other popular works, The Lorax. Each guest also went home with a surprise party bag of treats and Dr. Seuss-themed crafts. Youth Services Librarian Lauren Graves, who just recently joined the team at the Celina Library, spoke excitedly about going "all out" for the celebration with plans for future events that include Yoga Story Time, Kids Book Club, Summer Reading Programs and a visit from the Perot Museum Tech Truck. Tye Chandler Has Made Up His Mind By Jodie Brownd
P
rior to a recent conversation with a professional bull rider, Garth Brooks, Wes Hightower and Lane Frost taught me everything I knew about the topic. Lucky for me, when I met Tye Chandler, I was reeducated about a sport that only sounds self-explanatory. I was left with inspiration, insight and a look into the life lessons of a 23-year-old man that is wise beyond his years. The most successful people are usually the ones that have endured the most. Many times, fans just see the final product of a person holding a trophy, wearing a crown or in Tye's case, a large, shiny belt buckle. Most of the time we don't know the back story of how people made it to those glorious moments, or the blood, sweat and tears it took to get there. Tye's back story makes his moment in the spotlight that much brighter and by "back story" I mean literally and figuratively. Tye knew he wanted to be a bull rider from a very young age. He started out riding calves and watching his big brother ride bulls. With a Dad who also has a passion for the sport, he couldn't have escaped his dreams of being a world champion, even if he tried. His brother Josh suffered an injury that left him with a brain cyst‌and Josh was no longer able to ride due to the danger he faced if he were to continue. Flash forward a few years to a practice ride for Tye, one early evening when he claims he "got off in a bad spot." He rode the bull and when he jumped off, he found himself eye to eye with the beast. The bull then slammed into him, leaving him crawling on his hands and knees. A big part of bull riding is what happens right after the cowboy has ridden for the required 8 seconds. This particular night, it ended badly as his dad ran into the pen, picked him up by the vest and dragged him to safety. What was originally thought to be a pulled muscle was ultimately a broken back.

Three vertebrae to be exact, as determined after he was transported to Ft. Worth Methodist Hospital. After a tedious surgery and with 8 rods placed in his back, he was given a recovery plan by PBRA Dr. Tandy Freeman. Tye shared that, "Regular doctors will just tell you to stop riding, but Tandy will shoot straight with you from an occupational standpoint." It was at this point in the conversation that the silence in the room was deafening and I said, "Your poor Mother." We laughed as he shared about how supportive she is, but that it can't be denied that the sport brings about an underlying fear for Moms of boys. That nervousness and fear is well documented, as he teases about the quality of video she takes of his rides through her shaking hands. The knowledge that this kid is as determined as any bull ever was to continue riding makes it easier to have faith that he's doing exactly what he feels like he was born to do, and who is anybody really to argue that? When asked about his best rodeo memories, he recalls friendships made when he was 12. Tye met Cody Dollins and Taylor Tovas as children and reconnected the summer he graduated from high school when the trio toured the country to take on the rodeo world. They started out fully funded after a few wins but found out quickly how easy it was to burn through money spent on gas and hotel room stays from Colorado, Utah, through Idaho to North Dakota. Tye spoke of how the 3 became like brothers and depended on each other’s wins for the cash to survive out in the real world. The guys had a great idea once they had burned through their funds to buy a tent, to save money on hotel expenses. The great outdoors got the better of them on a seemingly clear day when the boys set up camp next to a pristine and crystal-clear lake in beautiful Wyoming. The ringing of a cell phone broke the natural silence as Taylor's Mom's called and mentioned a storm that was headed right for their location. The boys reiterated that the sky was perfectly clear and

Within about 5 minutes the sky turned dark and the boys were chasing their tent in a torrential downpour using rocks to anchor down their only means of shelter. Tye laughs as he recalls the tent caving in leaving only an inch of breathing space as they tried to hold down their flimsy homestead. "You're much more motivated to win when times are tough. If you don't win, you pay the consequences. So, you never really make losing an option."

After discussing the good old days, it is very clear to me that this Ryan Gosling look-alike is just as humble and down to Earth as the young boy who started out riding calves and walking in his father and brother's footsteps. What inspires him are the people that have supported and coached him along the way. He mentions his role models as being bull riders J.W. Hart and Justin McBride of Elk City, Oklahoma. He credits his parents, family and friends for believing in him, even when at times, he didn't necessarily believe in himself. With a career that has had highs, lows, injuries, backaches and cloudy skies, there is one thing that is certain about this guy. He's not quitting. He knew the moment he broke his back that God was with him, and that if he was given the opportunity to heal up and ride again, he'd do it. And he most certainly did that. In only his seventh event at the premier series level, Mr. Tye Chandler won Round 1 of the 25th PBR: Unleash The Beast, Duluth Invitational in front of a packed house on Saturday, March 10th at Infinite Energy Arena in Duluth, Georgia. "Gangster Boy" (Rickey West Bucking Bulls) was no match for this comeback kid. Having mastered the required 8 seconds to win his first-ever round in the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) he is now ranked 28th in the world...IN THE WORLD!!!! The picture taken that night shows the young man's face that reflects both pride and humility with the eyes of an old soul. When asked what keeps him riding, he offers a humble, side grin and replies with all the confidence in the world, "The fact that I haven't won the PBR World Finals." I asked him, "Do you believe that you'll make it there?” To which he replied, "Yes, ma'am I do. I have faith and I've just made up my mind." As we parted ways, I miraculously held back my maternal instincts to say ‘be careful’ and instead went with, "Your Mama did a good job with you." He tipped his hat and said, "Thank you, ma'am, I'll tell her you said so." As he made his way across the parking lot to his truck I couldn't help but think he's exactly right. We're all capable of doing pretty much anything we make up our minds to do. He's determined, with a back story and the faith to prove it. If anybody can just decide to win the PBR World Finals, and DO IT, it will most definitely be Tye Chandler from Celina, Texas. That my friends, is no bull.

Introducing Your Little Ones To Gardening

• Get good quality child-sized garden tools. • Have the child make a special ornament for his/her garden.
• Take cuttings together from ivies, geraniums, or other easy to root plants. Plant a terrarium together in an old aquarium or large glass bowl. • In the garden, children like extremes. Plant huge sunflowers and other large plants in one area. In another area, grow tiny plants…maybe make a “fairy garden”! Mini-Greenhouse
• Pick seeds that are easy to handle and plants that are easy and reliable such as Nasturtiums, Marigolds, Zinneas, Scarlet Runner Beans, Sunflowers, etc.
You can make a mini greenhouse to start your plants using empty 2-liter bottles. Use green bottles if you can. If you only have clear, punch some extra holes in them or they will get too hot inside and cook your plants.
• Plant the children’s garden over several days, if necessary to maintain attention.
• Cut the bottom off a 2-liter plastic soft drink bottle. Remove the label and the cap.
• Start seeds inside under florescent light for slow growing flowers, Kids enjoy having things growing.
• Place the bottle right side up over your seedling and push it far enough into the top hold it upright.
• Plant the child’s name using alfalfa seed or grass seed planted in a tray of cotton fluff or potting soil
• Once your plants have grown tall enough to touch the top of the inside of the bottle, remove the bottle.
• Have child decorate a Styrofoam cup as a face. Fill the cup with dirt and plant it with grass seed. As the grass grow the child can give it “haircuts”.
• Don’t let the plant grow through the top you won’t be able to remove it and your plant will not thrive.
• Make stepping stones for the children’s garden that feature their hand and/or foot prints from concrete. Add fiberglass filaments to strengthen for cold weather durability.

• Grow a carrot tops by cutting off all but 1” of the carrot (potatoes, sweet potatoes, and other root vegetables work as well). Stick 4 toothpicks into carrot around sides and place over a cup of water with the carrot slightly into the water. Plant orange seeds to start an orange (grapefruit or lemon) tree for in your home. • Save seeds of flowers (marigolds, sunflowers, etc) or vegetables (beans, pumpkins, etc.) to plant next year. Place seeds on paper plates until dry and store in a sealed jar until planting season. It is good to learn that we don’t have to buy seeds; we can find them and save them.

Make a Weatherstation It’s important to pay attention to the weather in the summer as it will affect the growth of plants. We have different weather patterns every year, so our plants grow differently every year. It is easy to put together a few things that help keep track of the weather so that you can write it down in a notebook, your very own weather journal of sorts. It’s important to keep the journal going so you can compare this year to last year or several years before. You will need: • outside thermometer • minimum/maximum thermometer (optional) • sturdy pinwheel • rain gauge • Snow measuring stick (make your own with a yard stick mounted to a stake. The stake can secure it into the ground. Make sure the yard stick is touching the ground at 0.) • Notebook or journal with pencil or pen attached with a string (so it doesn’t get lost). These items can be purchased inexpensively at many home supplies stores. Once you have purchased them, decide where your weather station will be. You may have to spread a few items around to have them in the ideal position. When placing the thermometers, make sure they are not in the sun. A place on the north side of the house or in a shady area may be best. The pinwheel needs to be placed out in the open where the breeze or wind will blow on it. The rain gauge and the snow measuring stick also needs to be in the open for best measurement. Once everything is in place take daily measurements. Check the rain gauge each morning. Check the temperature when it is at the hottest, around 4:00pm. The minimum/maximum thermometer is great for telling the highest and lowest temperature each day. Look at the pinwheel to see how strong the winds are. Do they change during the day or evening? As you collect the information, record it in your journal. Each day could have a piece of a page with all the information written out. Have fun with your weather station. Maybe you’ll become a meteorologist!

2017 Celina Police Annual Report If you haven’t read the 2017 Celina Police Annual Report, available on the Celina Police Department Website and Facebook Page, it is a fantastic time investment for anyone interested in the growth, development and future of Celina. It covers topics including community events, opportunities to serve and Police Department initiatives and systems put in place to benefit citizens based on specific criteria and data obtained by community surveys. The Celina Police Department plays an active role in implementing community awareness and events to establish and maintain a positive partnership between citizens and law enforcement. One of the major events highlighted in the Report is National Night Out, benefitting Hope’s Door. The purpose of NNO is for the community to come out and meet with their neighbors to show their solidarity and determination to keep Celina safe. This community outreach creates a space for fun interaction between citizens and officers and is a way for neighbors to join for the benefit of their neighborhoods and a great cause. Individuals and groups from subdivisions in our community host block parties with activities and bounce houses providing officers and citizens the opportunity get to know each other in a different environment. The funds raised at block parties are donated in support of Hope’s Door to keep our community aware of domestic violence and be a part of the police/ community initiative to stop domestic violence and provide safety for victims. Hope’s Door New Beginning Center is a not-for-profit organization with locations in Plano and Garland. Services are provided to clients at no charge, to offer intervention and prevention services to individuals and families affected by intimate partner and family violence. The ability to help first hand gives everyone involved a chance to be a part of a muchneeded solution. The Annual Report states that from 2014 to 2017, alcohol offenses by minors increased by 14.14% (rate per 1000 residents). In 2017, the police department launched a combined alcohol and drug initiative to prevent substance abuse among minors. Events like the DEA National RX Take Back Program are designed and implemented to provide solutions in

communities. The goal of the program is to provide the community a safe and monitored location to discard of unused prescription drugs. The Prescription Return event is scheduled on April 28, 2018 from 10:00am to 2:00pm. The safe drop off location will be at the Celina Fire Department at 1413 S. Preston Road, Celina, Texas. Another beneficial community resource designed to empower Celina citizens is the Anonymous Tip 411 program. If you have information you feel would be beneficial for law enforcement, you can text an anonymous message. Tip 411 creates the feeling of safety and partnership, allowing community members to assist law enforcement with crime issues. If you’d like to have a “hands on” effect in the community, you’ll get that opportunity on Saturday, April 7th, when the City of Celina will host its first Downtown Clean-Up Day. The event will hopefully become an annual event that will encourage residents to work together to benefit our community by disposing of their larger unwanted items. It takes a village these days, to maintain the safety of citizens and the fact that our police force does all that they can do to keep us safe, it is an extra bonus to know that their work in our community doesn’t stop there, or even close. The main goal of the police Department is to reach out to the community and establish a connection that helps erase the stigma that can be associated with being a police officer. The more help officers get from the citizens, the safer we will all be. With the growth we’re seeing on the horizon and the goals set in place to tackle pre-existing and future issues that come with that, you can rest assured that our police wear many hats and are willing and capable of maintaining the safe, small town feel that Celina is known for. That maintenance is twofold as it also requires active citizens partnering with them to do so. The 2017 Celina Police Annual Report is a wealth of knowledge that includes specifics on correctable issues, areas of improvement and the success and milestones reached based on past reports. There is a Place Where You Fit
J
ust the other day, my youngest son came down the stairs and said, “Dad, help me put this puzzle together.” I haven’t worked a puzzle in years, but of course I said I would help. Fortunately for me, this was a small puzzle and within fifteen minutes we had the entire thing put together. Excited about our accomplishment, my son was ready to graduate to the next puzzle and pulled out the five-hundred-piece puzzle. Uh-oh. Like any other good dad, I began to explain to him how this puzzle wasn’t going to be completed in fifteen minutes like the other one, hoping he might change his mind. Nope, he was aware of the challenge and he just knew we could do it.

NKJV - “But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased.” When we accept Jesus as our savior, we are a part of what the Bible calls the body of Christ, the Church. And just like our natural bodies have many parts, so does the body of Christ. Each part has it’s unique and specific function. Sometimes in life we can get frustrated because we feel like we are not in the right place. Just like with those puzzle pieces, we can have thoughts that maybe there isn’t a place for us. We have thoughts that maybe something is wrong with us and there is no place we fit. But just like putting together a large puzzle, if we are persistent, and stay with it, we will find our place.
In any puzzle, there is a specific place where each piece fits. We can try to force a piece to fit in the wrong place, but there’s really only one place it perfectly fits. As I’m finding out in a large puzzle like this one, sometimes it may take a long time just to find the right place for each piece. And the longer it takes, the more doubt begins to creep into my mind. Maybe we lost that piece, maybe there just isn’t a place where this piece fits. But if we are persistent and keep at it, we will eventually find that perfect place where each piece fits.
How do we find our place in life? The best place to start is by getting connected to your local church. If you don’t already have one you attend regularly, start visiting churches in your area. What does this have to do about finding your place? Everything! The truth is that in order to find the perfect place where you fit, you are going to need God’s help and guidance. When you are connected to the right people, at the right place, and you stick with it, God will lead you right into His perfect will for your life. In that place you will truly find fulfillment. It’s where you belong, your perfect place, where you fit.
I was thinking about how our lives are being pieced together much like a puzzle. Like each puzzle piece, there is a specific place where YOU fit. Not only do you fit, you are a perfect fit. The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 12:18
