10 Things to Do with Your Family During Quarantine By Heather Reynolds

W

e’ve all heard the warnings for weeks…Stay at Home. Flatten the Curve. Social Distance. We’re all doing our part to prevent the spread of COVID-19…and our lives have changes overnight. Our schools started with extending Spring Break, then we began online learning… and ultimately are now closed for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year. Life has slowed down. We’re working from home, learning from home and spending more time with our families than we have in decades. Here are some ways to connect with your family during this time of rest while we stay home to stay safe. Play Board Games, Trivia Games or Put Together a Puzzle These have always been a great pastime during the holidays, on snow days or during the summer because they provide hours of entertainment. Classic board games can bring out some healthy competition and lots of laughter. Trivia games test your knowledge and keep your brains fresh. And puzzles are a great way to teach your family to work together. Start a Journal What we are experiencing is quite rare and will most definitely be written about in history books for years to come. This is a great time to keep a journal of day by day events in the news, as well as what your daily life looks like. If your children are old enough to write, give them the chance 8 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

to help create a family journal and rotate the writing duties among all family members. Family Movie Night What better time to enjoy a favorite movie with your loved ones than now? Each evening, let a different member of the family select the movie, make some popcorn and snuggle up together. Or, if you’re trying to reduce screen time – or you’re just sick of watching movies by now – invite your children to create their own play or musical. They can create the story, hold rehearsals and make costumes, and then perform for their parents. Take a video to share with extended family! Look at Old Photos Break out your photo albums and begin sharing your memories. Children love to see pictures of their parents as children! And learning about family members who have passed on continues their legacy…recalling old times can encourage sentimentality. Or, if you don’t have any photo albums, there’s no time like the present to create some. If you’ve been meaning to make a photo book of your last vacation, have your children help you put the book together online…it will help them relive the experience and think about future vacations.

With all of the extra time we have together, use it to get creative in the kitchen! Bake your favorite cookies or cupcakes and have fun with the toppings. Try something fun and let your children pick the recipe and everything that goes with it…it will be a culinary adventure that will help them figure out which foods go together, and which do not. Make Cards to Mail to Loved Ones Writing a handwritten letter or card to someone you love will definitely brighten the recipient’s day, especially during this time of social distancing. Younger children can draw or color a picture. The point is to think of it as a way to send a smile. Communication is so important right now, and family members who may be lonely, older or who don’t have access to a computer will appreciate it. If you don’t have family to send mail to, have your kids write letters to a local nursing home. Have a Picnic Backyard picnics are a great way to get outside for some sunshine while never leaving the yard. Place a good-sized blanket out and grab some sandwiches. Get the kids involved with the process so they get excited about spending time together. Watch the clouds and enjoy the sounds of the birds and nature all around you.

Broken & Fogged Window Glass Energy Efficient Replacement Glass Framed/Frameless Shower Enclosures Mirrors and Table Tops Solar Screens and Bug Screens Family Owned with 25+ Years Experience

Build a Pillow Fort A good old-fashioned pillow fort is always a fun option…grab a sheet, pillow cushions and all the fluffy pillows you can find to craft the best fort you can. This is a great idea for encouraging quiet time or reading time – kids may be more motivated to nap, read or journal in their new, kidfriendly space.

Check-in with Others Just because you’re quarantined doesn’t mean you can’t still check on others in need. Send them a text, give them a call or set up a video chat to stay connected. Use this as an opportunity to make sure older relatives have the supplies they need. Offer to pick up groceries or prescriptions so they don’t have to go out and risk being exposed. Family Prayer Time Before the quarantine, everyone was always so busy in the morning trying to get ready for work and school…this may be a rare opportunity for your family to actually have time to pray with one another for those you know. Give your children a prayer point to talk about or assign people to pray for that day…today’s prayer can be for Grandma and her friends, tomorrow’s for Grandpa. It’s a great way to remind the entire family to be thinking of others and giving all thanks to God. Even if only for 5 minutes, you’re teaching your children the right way to start and end each day.

Alone, We Can Do So Little; Together We Can Do So Much! Looking back over my March article revealed that upcoming school events were shared, and we were excitedly entering the home stretch gearing ourselves up for state testing and graduation. There was no mention of COVID-19. A month later, we find ourselves watching the virus spread across our great nation, closing school facilities, canceling large group events, practicing social distancing and moving our physical classrooms to the internet. What a difference a month has made to not only our community, but to life itself. We continue to watch county after county issue emergency proclamations urging their communities to either stay at home and/or shelter in place. These orders should not be taken lightly and have been issued with great thought in regards to the implications of what these directives will mean to the school districts, small businesses, and families that reside within these counties. Our city and district administrators are immersed in conference calls and/or Zoom meetings with state entities on a daily basis to provide our families with factual updates regarding COVID-19. Our district is blessed with an amazing group of educators that we called upon to create a pathway to learning for our students that would continue their educational pursuits but would not overwhelm them during this unsettling time. We also must take this time to applaud our parents that have also been called upon to navigate the waters of remote learning ensuring that the directives being communicated by their child’s teachers each week are being received and completed. We continue to receive reports that students are thriving and enjoying this new opportunity even in the midst of the chaos caused by COVID-19.

CISD Athletic Director Bill Elliott is also in contact weekly with his athletes and parents. Recently, he posted information regarding an app that his department is employing called SportsYou. You can download the app, which is free through the App Store. The code to join is 6PRN8LMG. Once downloaded, you can decide whether to be notified by phone or by email. For those that choose not to use the app, Coach Elliott will still be emailing his messages on a weekly basis. Our district is in constant contact with the Texas Education Agency, (TEA) and based on recent communication, we will not be required to use the scheduled bad weather days on our current calendar to cover the time missed. Essentially, all of the time spent preparing and delivering instruction remotely to our students has been approved for the district to apply for a waiver. This means that our bad weather days scheduled for April 10th and May 1st, will remain as staff and student holidays. All information regarding school closures and procedures will be updated on our website under the COVID-19/Latest information page. As we all continue to navigate through these unchartered waters, the words of Helen Keller are a constant reminder of what is being accomplished daily by our school district, our city, and our community…. “Alone, we can do so little; Together we can do so much!” We’ve Got This Bobcats! Welcome to Celina Dr. Maglisceau!

T

he Celina School Board of Trustees voted unanimously to name Dr. Tom Maglisceau, as the lone finalist for the position of Superintendent of Schools for the Celina Independent School District during the CISD Board of Trustees meeting on Monday evening, March 23, 2020. In accordance with state law, Dr. Maglisceau must complete the required 21-day waiting period before the contract is made official. The search for a new superintendent began in December after current CISD Superintendent Mr. Rick DeMasters formally submitted his resignation to retire effective December 2020. In his letter to the faculty and staff he stated, “The opportunity to come to Celina ISD was the greatest blessing and I cannot think of a better place to end my public-school career. I am so thankful to the Celina community for being so very generous and supportive of not only our school district, but myself as well.” CISD School Board President Kelly Juergens shared that, “It was extremely important for the board members to find a candidate that not only embodied the hometown values that make Celina unique, but carried a strong level of experience with fast growth districts.” Dr. Maglisceau was one of over ninety candidates screened by the board members through an extensive superintendent search. The board set a high standard from the start by using a multi-scoring process that centered around input gathered from faculty and community members. The board narrowed the field to ten highly qualified candidates, which was again reduced to the final three finalists. All seven board members unanimously chose Dr. Maglisceau as the lone finalist. Dr. Maglisceau presently serves as the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services for Rockwall Independent School District. He has over 27 years of experience in education starting as an English Teacher/Coach and then Assistant Principal at Highland Park ISD. He also worked for Dallas ISD, before making his way to Rockwall, where he has spent the last sixteen years of his career. Bobcat Nation extends our congratulations to Dr. Maglisceau for being named as the Lone Finalist as Superintendent of Schools for the Celina Independent School District. We look forward to your leadership as we…Pave the Way for the Future!

Mary McCauley & Kristy Campbell Mary and Kristy met 12 years ago while volunteering on the Celina ISD CARE Board (now known as the Celina Education Foundation (CEF)). Kristy says, “We were kindred spirits from the start. Our shared values of faith, caring for people and problem solving fit together perfectly. Mary is a solid person; someone you can always count on to do the right thing. She’s fun to work with and an expert in real estate sales with a very loyal client base that keeps growing with every referral.” In 2019, Mary and Kristy’s listings had an average “days on market” of just 23 days. Compare this to the average of 61 days on market in the area’s MLS. What makes the difference? Mary says, “We have a 21 Step Marketing Plan that we implement on each of our listings. We utilize the top real estate photography firm in Texas, customized staging and pricing strategies way above and beyond the norm. We leave no stone unturned in looking at what is happening in the market including calculating absorption rates for the specific area and neighborhood.” Mary is a graduate of Texas A & M University and Kristy graduated from Baylor University with a degree in Business Administration. Both have had corporate careers including sales and the real estate industry. Higher education and professional experience go a long way in making for a stress-free real estate transaction. Couple that with hundreds of closings of all types and that brings expertise, knowledge and comfort to buyers and sellers alike. In early 2020, The McCauley and Campbell Team joined a boutique brokerage, Fraser Realty. Kristy says, “We are so pleased and excited to announce our new association with Fraser Realty. Fraser employs a full-time marketing director who is very talented and has taken the marketing of our listings to even higher levels. This is a game changer for our team and for our clients. Exceptional online marketing attracts ideal buyer prospects which produces great results for our seller clients.” Prospective clients can know more about The McCauley & Campbell Team by our Mission: “To serve the real estate needs of the people God brings across our paths with servant hearts valuing the relationship over the transaction and trusting in God for the end result to be His purpose.”

Mary says, “We love Jesus, we love our families and we love our work in real estate.” Mary is married to Jeff and they have two married adult children and three grandchildren. Kristy is married to Carey and they have three married adult children and two grandchildren. Mary and Kristy continue to volunteer in Celina and Gunter in the areas of their passions. These include helping young people know they are loved and valued; also helping them find meaning, purpose and their calling in life. 5 Tips for Better Home Safety this Spring

A

s people become more active during the warmer months, keeping home safety top of mind can sometimes go by the wayside. However, when it comes to fire and carbon monoxide safety, you can never be too prepared. Whether you are just beginning to take a stronger safetyfirst approach or looking to upgrade existing home safety equipment, keep these tips in mind as you spruce up your home for the season. DON’T JUST CHECK BATTERIES, CHECK THE ALARM It’s a good idea to review your safety equipment and ensure everything is in good working order at least a couple times each year. For example, every type of smoke alarm must be completely replaced every 10 years whether it’s hardwired into your home or operates on a battery. New smoke alarms commonly come with built-in 10-year batteries, meaning no battery changes, but it’s a good idea to test the units regularly. In fact, most manufacturers recommend weekly. You can also use this time to double-check the gauge on your fire extinguishers, replace batteries in flashlights, test security systems and replenish first-aid kits. INSPECT AND REPAIR OUTDOOR AREAS Set aside time to evaluate any damage or potential hazards as the weather warms. For example, fallen tree branches and leaves can become trapped in gutters and pose a fire hazard. Shutters and fences can also weaken over time. To make sure they’re in good working condition, check that they are securely fastened. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SMART TECHNOLOGY According to the National Fire Protection Association, 40 years ago people had an average of 17 minutes to escape a home fire, but today the average has decreased to about 3 minutes due to synthetic materials used in modern-day home furnishings. To get the earliest warning of a

18 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

home fire, install wire-free interconnected battery-powered combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. When one alarm senses a hazard, all alarms throughout the home sound in unison. Features like colorcoded status rings and built-in 10-year sealed batteries make Kidde’s Wire-Free Interconnected Alarms a smart solution for optimal protection. They offer simple setup and operate without the hassle of hardwiring or a Wi-Fi connection. CHECK APPLIANCES While going through your spring home safety checklist, take time to check your appliances or schedule an annual maintenance check for your stove, oven, heating system and more. According to the American Red Cross, dryers are responsible for approximately 9 of every 10 appliances fires. These common household appliances can collect dust, lint and other particles, which are potential fire hazards and can cause carbon monoxide leaks. KEEP OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES IN MIND Cooking on grills is a popular pastime, but thousands of people are injured every year while using them. In fact, according to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly 9,000 home fires are started by grills each year. Now is a good time to get your home’s grilling area in tip-top shape. Keep a 3-foot safety zone around hot grills for children and pets, and have a multipurpose home fire extinguisher nearby as fires can occur unexpectedly. Propane and charcoal grills both put off carbon monoxide as a byproduct, so be sure keep your grill at least 10 feet from the home and ensure it is positioned away from windows, doors, vents and ductwork. For more safety tips to better prepare your home, visit Kidde.com.

7 Steps to Prepare for a Home Remodel homeowner’s motivation for taking on a remodeling project can vary greatly, but there’s one universal rule of thumb: home upgrades should add value, function or both. This step-by-step guide can help ensure you get the maximum return on your investment and make the most of your remodel.

A

Step 1: Identify Reasons for Remodeling Deciding whether to undertake simple aesthetic changes or a full remodel can be difficult. One of the best ways to decide is to figure out why you are remodeling in the first place, whether it’s to make your new house feel more like home or to update an outdated kitchen. Step 2: Consider Timing Many variables can impact the timing of your project, including the climate and exact nature of the job. For example, foundation work is easier when the ground is cold during winter. Spring tends to be busy for the construction industry, so you might pay premium rates for labor and materials, but it’s also the perfect time to get a project done that you can enjoy throughout the summer. Summer months are ideal for indoor projects out of the heat. Also consider factors such as personal or professional obligations, or even an event for which you need the project completed. Step 3: Set Your Budget Every home is unique in structure, age, quality and craftsmanship, which all impact the price of a remodel. Since no one can see through walls before demolition, the quote you receive may not be 100% accurate. However, a qualified remodeling company will be forthcoming about potential challenges. Account for these adjustments by planning for a 10% cushion, just in case. Step 4: Hire the Right Team To help ensure you find the right company for the job, do your research. 20 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

Referrals from friends and family are one way to find a remodeler. Resources like the National Association of the Remodeling Industry provide unbiased information that can help you find qualified, certified remodelers in your area. With more than 5,000 member companies, the organization represents professional remodelers who adhere to a strict code of ethics. Many hold certifications in remodeling, kitchen and bath design and lead carpentry. Step 5: Establish a Written Agreement Most companies insist on a contract to protect their own interests, but if they don’t, you should. In addition to defining the scope of work and budget, a contract ensures all parties are on the same page with expectations about factors like timing, liability in the event of an accident and other practical matters. Contractors also often provide guarantees of workmanship, so find out what they cover for how long and include this information in your work agreement. Step 6: Understand the Plan Keep the lines of communication open between you, the remodeling contractor and the work crew. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Let them know your family’s schedule and circumstances that may affect their work, such as pets. Make sure to specify the best way to reach you and how often you wish to communicate about your project. Step 7: Complete the Project When the remodel is almost finished, walk through the area and note any adjustments that need made while the contractor is still on site. You should also take another look at the contract and confirm you have signed permits, receipts, change orders, lien waivers, warranties and manufacturers’ guides at your disposal. Ornamental Grasses Can Showcase Your Garden

S

ometimes, even the most beautiful shrubs can look rather plain, simply plunked down in a flower bed…particularly if placed in front of a stark wall or an ugly fence. A comparison might be buying a really attractive piece of furniture and positioning it in a bare room with a nasty, stained wall behind it! Somehow, its beauty is lost in that environment. But as those shows on HGTV demonstrate, a complimentary backdrop and some well-placed accessories can make all the difference…creating a stage upon which your special piece stands out as a star. To take this idea to your flower beds, consider adding ornamental grasses. The right grasses can provide an eye-pleasing backdrop and a buffer between your shrubs and a fence or wall. They can complement and enhance the shape and color of your plantings, and many can provide attractive greenery long into the winter when there’s little else to attract the eye. I happen to think that shimmering, frost-covered spikes on a crisp winter morning are a truly beautiful sight! So, what should you choose? As always, I’m happy to offer specific, personal advice via e-mail if you send me some details at jimmie@ absolutelybushed.com but let’s start with a few basic ideas...

Porcupine or Zebra Grass (Miscanthus sinensis ‘Strictus’) This is a variegated form of Maiden Grass and grows to about 5 feet tall, flowering in September. The gold bands on the foliage create a really interesting streak of color. Like its Maiden cousin, Porcupine is a fast grower and can tolerate sun, partial sun and shade.

SMALL GRASSES: Blue Fescue (Festuca ovina glauca Elija-blue) Elija Blue is the bluest of all the blue fescues, and really creates a stunning effect when planted with flowers and small shrubs that produce pink or red blooms. Try planting Elija Blues with dianthus (pinks). Around June, you’ll see tall, flowering spikes rising from the fine-textured clumps that spread approximately 18” - 24”. Pennisetum Little Bunny

TALL GRASSES: Maiden Grass (Miscanthus sinensis ‘Gracillimus’) This is quite a “large” grass and is a favorite of ours due to its fine, narrow foliage and gracefully round form. Maiden Grass blooms from mid to late fall and grows 4 to 6 feet tall and 4 feet around. I recommend about 48 inches spacing between plants. It grows quite fast and is dense enough to obscure any unattractive fencing behind it. It is also fairly pest-resistant when mature, quite drought resistant and a very nice addition to berrying plants and evergreens. 22 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

A cute name for a really cute ornamental grass that grows less than one foot tall! It is ideal to plant in front of perennials, and works well as a ground cover or with dwarf conifers and rock gardens. At our house, Roxanne and I planted Little Bunny in French drains in the back yard our home. It is rabbit-resistant, sun tolerant, and gives us these beautiful tufted plumes in late summer. The blooms persist into winter but we often harvest and dry them for flower arrangements. If you’d prefer a variegated version, look for its cousin, “Little Honey.”

MEDIUM GRASSES: Dwarf Grass (Pennistum Hamelin) This is just about our favorite! Its finely-textured foliage and compact growth made it ideal to plant in front of our own house. We love the flower clusters that appear in summer and fall, earlier than most other varieties. They top out at about 2 to 3 feet at maturity and look great yearround. (Note if this Grass interests you please also check out Mexican Feather variety too!)

I hope this has given you some ideas for enhancing the look of your flower beds (and, indeed, much of your landscape) without spending too much of your hard-earned cash! Question: Jimmie, I have a young dogwood tree that I believe got overspray of herbicide (from a company I no longer use) on it last spring when they treated my lawn. It got some dark spots on the lower leaves and a few of them eventually fell off. I thought that would be the end of it, but it seemed to be getting worse as the summer progressed. The dark spots were appearing on higher leaves and my entire tree seems to be doing badly. I know it did not get reinfected, because I did not treat my lawn again. Could it be something else and just coincidentally happened shortly after I treated my lawn? If so, what can I do? If not, will my tree be okay now that the winter passed and into spring? Do you know of anything I can do to reverse the effects of this on my tree? - Tom T. in Celina

Answer: Hi Tom, if the damage was caused by the lawn spray company there is little you can do except wait it out. One thing comes to mind is to feed it a root stimulator in order to give it some help and maybe a plant food (not fertilizer) that will give it a boost. Whatever damage was done is done and cannot be reversed. All you can do is try to encourage new life and if it survives do your best to keep feeding (tree and shrub food only) and stimulate new growth. Until next time‌ Happy Gardening!!

What You Need to Know About Your Thyroid: It Impacts Weight, Sleep and Mental Health

finally be diagnosed. Adams has always been an active person, but for a few years, she had felt tired and had a constant tightness in her throat. She was diagnosed with post-nasal drip but did not feel relief after a year of treatment. “I thought this exhaustion, hoarse voice and lump in my throat were just my new normal,” Adams said. “I’d accepted it, and I shouldn’t have.” During this time, Adams went on a bike ride in northeastern New Jersey 28 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

– something she still does frequently. However, on this day, Adams was struck by a car as she was biking. The incident resulted in an MRI scan. Adams was not seriously injured, but doctors noticed something unexpected. The scan revealed nodules in her lower neck, which suggested thyroid disease. “I now realize I had symptoms of a thyroid condition for years,” Adams said. “I’d had it up to here with not feeling like myself. Once I had the MRI results, I knew to seek out a thyroid expert, and I found an endocrinologist.”

Prospering Farm What You Probably Don’t Know About Your Thyroid Thyroid disease is more common than diabetes and heart disease, but more than half of Americans with thyroid disease are unaware, according to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE). This lack of awareness can endanger a person’s health and well-being.

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located low in the front of the neck below the Adam’s apple. It produces thyroid hormones that influence almost every cell, tissue and organ in the human body. Common signs of thyroid diseases include: Unexplained changes in weight Depression, anxiety or feelings of irritability Changes in memory or ability to concentrate Joint or muscle pain or weakness Fatigue or trouble sleeping Fast or irregular heartbeat Irregular menstrual periods Cheryl Rosenfeld, D.O., is a thyroid expert and AACE member. Rosenfeld is also the physician who treated Adams’ thyroid disease. “If the thyroid does not function correctly, it can affect every possible aspect of a person’s life,” Rosenfeld said. “Remember that thyroid conditions can cause changes in mental health, including depression. I’ve also spoken to patients who’ve experienced an inability to concentrate, which seriously affected their performance at work.” Several disorders can arise if the thyroid produces too much hormone (hyperthyroidism) or not enough (hypothyroidism). Other thyroid diseases include: Nodules Thyroid cancer Graves’ disease Hashimoto’s thyroiditis Thyroid eye disease Undiagnosed thyroid issues can also place a person at increased risk for heart disease, osteoporosis, infertility and other serious conditions. What to Do if You are ‘Up to Here’ With Not Feeling Like Yourself “Once I was placed on treatment for Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism, my life changed completely,” Adams said. “My throat is no longer sore, and I’m able to go out with my family or spend time at the gym without feeling completely drained of energy.” The first step to ensure your thyroid gland functions properly is to speak with a health care provider about your symptoms and whether a thyroid test is needed. An endocrinologist is a specially trained doctor who is qualified to diagnose and treat hormone-related diseases and conditions, including thyroid cancer and all other diseases related to the thyroid gland.
