New Year, New Season Usually, when I sit down to write this letter to y’all each August, it’s just after a very LONG summer break with the kids…they’re ready to go back to school and we’re READY for them to go back to school! It’s hot…they are bored…and my patience is thin. But not this year! This letter has been looming over me for the last 3 months…truthfully, it’s been on my mind for the last year! In less than a week, we are sending our baby off to Kindergarten, sending our middle daughter to High School and are packing our oldest darling up for college and she is moving 305 miles away. Our family is about to change in ways that we probably can’t even imagine today and I’m not totally sure how I feel about this new season of our lives. They are all so excited they can’t stand it. Their new year comes with new experiences, new friends, new challenges…but our new year comes with a longing for the days when they would lay contently in our arms and stare up at us like we were the most important people in the world to them. It was so hard back then to imagine that a day would come that would signify that we had done our job and it was time for them to spread their wings and fly…and yet here we are. In seven short days, our baby won’t be a “baby” anymore…she’ll be in school, REAL school. Our 9th grader will start on the path to her future – high school, I can barely choke those words out. And the oldest? She’ll be 4 hours and 47 minutes away from home learning how to navigate life on her own. Without us…this new season is heart wrenching. There’s an old saying that talks about how the days are long and the years are short, and lately that just keeps resonating with me. I remember so vividly the day I brought my first daughter home from the hospital eighteen years ago…it seems like yesterday. And now she’s about to embark on the best adventure of her life with more potential and desire than I could have ever dreamt for her. It happened just like that. So fast, almost without warning. And the scariest part for me is knowing that there are two more behind her that will be gone even faster…it’s like the train is rambling full speed ahead and has no intention of stopping at the station, no matter how desperately we need it to. All we can do is hold on and pray that we catch a few moments here and there. Our girls are smart and sweet and dramatic and funny and beautiful…they are everything to us, our entire lives wrapped up in three sassy little packages. They are strong and stubborn and resourceful and tenacious…the best qualities you could ever hope to have as an adult, but man are they tough to raise! They will succeed in anything that they do, and they have a charisma about them that just lures people in. They are caring and sensitive and we couldn’t love them more if we tried. They are going to be the ones who lift us up during this new season, of that I’m sure! When you see me around town these next few months and I look like I’ve forgotten something…it’s because my sidekick will be in Fayetteville. If I burst into tears when you ask how she’s doing, it’ll be because she’s killing it up there, having the time of her life and I’m so dang proud of her. And if any of my fellow friends are in this same season…please reach out, I’m starting a support group for us! Here’s to our new year and to new seasons… we’ve got this! Celina Proud,

Welcome Back Bobcat Nation! It is my sincere pleasure to welcome all of you back for the 2019 – 2020 school year! For those of you who will be joining our family for the first time, you have chosen a wonderful community where faith, family, and relationships are valued! It’s hard to believe that in just a few short weeks, we will be kicking off yet another school year that will be bringing some exciting changes to our district. Celina ISD is “Home to the Bobcats,” which carries much tradition and pride throughout our community. Our teachers and staff members empower and inspire their students by providing an educational atmosphere where innovation and excellence thrives. We expect our students to lead, be self-disciplined, honest, and connected through school and community events. We also welcome and expect our parents to partner with our district by taking an active role as their child’s advocate, creating open, respectful, and trusting relationships with their teachers and campus administrators. It’s an exciting time for the district as we anticipate the growth that is expected to make its way into our community over the next several years. With growth comes challenges, but at the end of last year, our community overwhelmingly passed a school bond in the amount of $600 million that will be used over the next ten years on a variety of projects to include: 4 elementary campuses, 2 middle school campuses, renovations to Celina Elementary and Celina High School. The bond money will also be used for land acquisitions, technology upgrades, maintenance, and transportation needs. 10 | August 2019 WeAreCELINA.com
This year, we will have the task of blending our past with our future. For the first time in over seventy years, our Celina Bobcats will have a new home on the hill with the opening of our new CISD Multipurpose Athletic Complex. As the stadium construction evolves, the excitement continues to build throughout the community. One of our long-standing community traditions has been the annual “Meet The Bobcats,” which is scheduled for Saturday, August 10th. In conjunction with this tradition, we are hosting the 1st Annual Bobcat Tailgate in the Visitors parking lot from 8:00am – 12:00pm. Our campuses, school organizations/clubs, community churches and businesses will have the opportunity to showcase and connect with current and new families to our area. Guided tours of the facility will also be conducted during this event, giving our community members an up close and personal experience of this State of the Art game changer! As we kick off this school year, we are reminded that “the road to success is always under construction.” While it is true that we will be undertaking new builds and other construction projects throughout the district, I have no doubt that our campuses and classrooms will continue to “Pave The Way For The Future.” We are extremely excited about this new year and can’t wait to have all of our family back together again on Wednesday, August 14th!

Downtown
Celina Downtown Master Plan:
terms of physical design and programming:
A Series on Character Districts and Special Focus Areas
Texas: During the planning process, the community overwhelmingly selected the Historic/Texas visual preference as the desired style for Downtown. Elements of the Historic/Texas style should be incorporated in future projects in Downtown, with Patio Commons being the showcase of said style.
Last year, the City of Celina adopted the Celina Downtown Master Plan, which culminated from ideas developed in the Stakeholder Interviews, Stakeholder Workshop and Engagement Day on the Square. We will be chronicling the various Character Districts and Special Focus areas over the next several months. The City of Celina was designated as an official Main Street City by the Texas Historical Commission and the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1997. Taking inspiration from the vision established by Celina Main Street, the following Vision Statement for Downtown was created and informed by community input throughout the planning process. VISION STATEMENT “Celina’s Downtown is the heart of the city, blending traditions of the past, fun and relevance of the now, and innovation for the future. It is a quaint and exceptional place that has one-of-a-kind events and festivals, welcomes visitors, and exudes a small-town charm that leaves a lifelong impression. Downtown Celina is a unique collection of family-friendly destinations, businesses, and homes that showcase Celina’s heritage and character—a spirited and soulful combination of family, agriculture, Texas, technology and innovation, entertainment, sports, and outdoor living.”
CHARACTER FRAMEWORK: DOWNTOWN THEMES During the planning process, seven Character Districts became readily apparent within Downtown, as reflected in the Character Framework Map. These character districts were informed by many things, but mostly (1) existing features, (2) community feedback on housing types and commercial activities, and (3) functional considerations for future development. Community feedback revealed that the character of Downtown is different west of Louisiana Street than it is east of Louisiana Street. Initially, people thought that it was the BNSF Railway that was the character line, but when the community explored forms of potential new structures and where they thought higher density homes would be appropriate, areas east of Louisiana Street were identified as being most appropriate for higher density housing types.
Family-friendly: “Family-friendly” was a phrase frequently repeated throughout the planning process for Downtown in terms of desired character and amenities. From splashpads, to kid-oriented spaces, to “cool” places for teenagers to gather, family-friendly destinations are areas where all ages are welcome and can have a good time. Familyfriendly housing should also be incorporated and should be designed with kids, adults, pets, and groups in mind for optimum quality of life. Outdoor Living: There are not many things more Celinians would prefer than relaxing on a shaded patio, listening to live music with great food, and having kids play in an enclosed area nearby. The community envisions patio-type spaces for outdoor living where the people can comfortably gather and enjoy the fresh air. Essential to the outdoor living experience is the provision of ample shade and outdoor climate control (fans, misters, heaters, fire pits, etc.) where possible. Entertainment: With significant transitions taking place in the retail sector of the global economy, the entertainment, services, and experiences sectors are taking on a more prominent and sustainable role. Similar to the Outdoor Living theme above, the Celina community has a strong desire to have Downtown be a fun destination, made up of many destinations with lively amenities and plenty to see and do.
Downtown is the heart of the city and the community has voiced their desire to keep and enhance its welcoming charm and viability. In doing such, Downtown should represent the many interests and desires of the community, including retaining the area’s historic charm, marketing a familyfriendly appeal, encouraging outdoor activities and entertainment, and creating a pedestrian-friendly environment— overall, creating a destination space for all to enjoy. The following four “themes” should permeate all areas of Downtown in WeAreCELINA.com August 2019 | 13
Downtown
CHARACTER DISTRICT: PATIO COMMONS During the planning process, the community envisioned “a city of patios” where people can enjoy a family-friendly group of destinations with great food and drinks, music, entertainment, and shared spaces for gathering and activities, and that is how the “Patio Commons” name was created. Recognizing that Texas, family-friendly, outdoor living, and entertainment themes are part of that heart of the city charm and what makes Celina unique, Patio Commons is envisioned to showcase that special character that the community treasures. At the center of Downtown Celina, is a historic grid street layout with a modest collection of buildings, structures, and physical elements near and dear to the community. There are many areas still undeveloped in the core of Downtown, and there are many areas of opportunity to build upon its assets. Patio Commons serves as the main gathering space for the community and is home to numerous businesses, neighborhoods, the Downtown Square, and events. Many events will continue to be held in Patio Commons so planning ahead for high quality special event space and event management will be key. Patio Commons is a destination space, envisioned to be walkable and bikeable with a showcase of quaint and inviting places.
14 | August 2019 WeAreCELINA.com
Placemaking: Patio Commons will have a high-quality cluster of housing, restaurants, entertainment, music spaces, and other service uses that showcase Celina’s character, exhibit the Downtown Themes, and provide for intense vitality of Celina’s Core. Downtown Themes: Areas for Outdoor Living, Family-friendly amenities, and Texan-style elements are highly encouraged and should be required in associated regulations where relevant and applicable.
WAYNE BARTLEY Car ing for Clients and Community
Overnight Accommodations: Overnight accommodations, in the form of bed and breakfasts, boutique hotels, or quaint inns, can enhance Downtown’s destination appeal. Mobility: Unique to Patio Commons is an enhanced portion of the Downtown street network containing the Inner Loop, Outer Loop, a Pedestrian Way, and a Civic Street.

Trails Master Plan Reflects Affinity for Outdoor Activity The undeniably strong connection to nature that exists among Celina residents came into clear focus recently as the City approved and adopted the 2019 Trails Master Plan, a document that encapsulates citizens’ preferences on future development of walking and biking trails. “The plan that was adopted is the result of over a year’s worth of conversations, public discussions, surveys, and social media interactions,” says Development Services Director Dusty McAfee. “The plan not only captures residents’ preferences; it also lays out a scenario for where within the City the trails should be laid out.” The plan combines paved hike and bike trails along existing and future thoroughfares, greenbelt areas, easement spaces, specified bike lanes, trails along railroad tracks, and trails incorporated as part of the Collin County Master Trails plan. Taken together, the Celina plan lays out an envisioned trails system that displaces about 150 linear miles. “For Celina residents and planners to identify a trails system that, placed end-to-end, would reach from Celina to Waco is remarkable,” he said. “It shows the level of affinity that the City in general has with nature and with enjoying the outdoors, whether walking or riding. The new Master Trails Plan will ensure that future generations of Celina residents have the opportunity to commune with nature, explore the outdoors, and be inspired and filled with awe.”

Some 60 of those linear miles are designed along creek beds, offering walkers and riders safe, trafficfree lanes along undeveloped strands within the City. The plan also includes 14 potential trail heads, presenting conveniently located starting and stopping points. Based on current population numbers, the plan can be defined as having a resident ratio of one mile of trail for each 1,800 residents. “The City’s Trails Master Plan is, of course, one of several interconnected plans that include parks, open spaces, transportation corridors, economic development centers, the downtown district, and many other proposed plans that, taken as a whole, will define Celina for years to come,” added McAfee. “Finalizing and adopting the Trails Master Plan is an important step in that visualization process.” Serving as a demonstration trail is the proposed Bobcat Trail, near the downtown area. Plans call for many of the trail amenities that will be incorporated into those identified in the master plan. These amenities include: three-quarters of a mile along a creek bed; a pair of pedestrian bridges across the creek; an amphitheater; fitness courts; covered basketball courts; tennis courts; a community garden; and venues for outdoor dining. “Many of these features will be included in the trails as they are developed,” he said. “All in all, the plan is very reflective of what residents have strongly expressed to us about what they want in walking and biking trails.” The 2019 Trails Master Plan may be viewed by visiting https://www.celina-tx.gov/DocumentCenter/ View/5406/Trails-Master-Plan-Adopted.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL BUS SAFETY
A
FAMILY FEATURES
nother school year means millions of children across the country are boarding buses at the beginning and end of each day, and it provides an appropriate opportunity for parents, teachers, school administrators and students themselves to practice and enforce safety guidelines in and around the school bus. Consider these tips from the experts at the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) to help keep children safe before bus rides, during travel and after exiting the vehicle.
Before the Bus Arrives n n
n n
n
Ensure backpacks are packed securely so papers and other items don’t scatter as the bus approaches. Create a morning routine that puts kids at the bus stop five minutes before the scheduled pickup time. This helps avoid a last-minute rush, when safety lessons are easily forgotten, and ensures kids are safely in place for boarding. Encourage children to wear bright, contrasting colors so they can be seen easier by drivers. Instruct children to walk on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, advise them to stay out of the street, walk single-file, face traffic and stay as close to the edge of the road as possible. Walk young children to the bus stop or encourage kids to walk in groups. There is safety in numbers; groups are easier for drivers to see.
22 | August 2019 WeAreCELINA.com
n n
n
n
If kids must cross a street, driveway or alley, remind them to stop and look both ways before crossing. Verify the bus stop location offers good visibility for the bus driver; if changes are needed, talk with nearby homeowners or school district officials to implement changes. Never let kids wait in a house or car, where the driver may miss seeing them approach the bus. Remind children that the bus stop is not a playground. Balls or other toys could roll into the street and horseplay can result in someone falling into the path of oncoming traffic. Instruct children to stay at least three steps away from the road and allow the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching it.
On the Bus Ride n
n

When boarding the bus, items can get bumped and dropped. Caution children that before picking anything up, they should talk to the driver and follow instructions to safely retrieve their possessions. Teach safe riding habits: stay seated with head, hands and feet inside at all times; keep bags and books out of the aisle and remain seated until the bus stops moving. Remind kids that just like when riding in cars, loud noises are off limits so they don’t distract the driver. That includes cellphones and other electronic devices; instruct children to put them on mute or use headphones.
Leaving the Bus n

Remind children to look before stepping off the bus. If they must cross the street, teach them to do so in front of the bus by taking five big steps (approximately 10 feet) away from the front of the bus, looking up and waiting for the driver to signal that it is safe. For parents who meet their kids at the bus, remember that excited kids may dart across the street. Eliminate the risk by waiting on the side of the street where kids exit the bus. Make the bus ride part of your daily “how was school?” discussion. Encourage kids to talk about the things they see and hear on the bus so you can discuss appropriate behaviors and, if necessary, report any concerns to school administrators. As bullying is prevalent and buses are no exception, ask children to tell you about any bullying they observe, whether against another child or themselves, and talk about how to shut down bully behaviors.

Rethink Your Child’s Ride While children and their parents can take many steps toward enhanced safety in and around buses, school districts also have unique opportunities to improve their transportation. More than 900 school districts in 48 states across the country are operating propane-powered school buses rather than other fuels like diesel and gasoline. Alternative fuels, such as propane, offer multiple benefits for school districts and students alike because propane buses reduce harmful emissions, save money and create a safer ride for students riding school buses. This school year, more than 1 million students will ride a propane school bus to school every day. Parents and community leaders can engage their local school districts about the benefits propane buses provide:
Cleanliness While diesel exhaust is classified by the World Health Organization as a carcinogen, propane buses don’t expose students to the same harmful emissions. Propane school bus engines lower greenhouse gas emissions to near-zero levels, which improves air quality and eliminates concerns about breathing-related health issues.
Cost Savings With school budgets continually at risk of losing funding, parents and schools can think outside the box to target extra savings. Over the life of the vehicle, propane school buses cost less compared to other fuels for a variety of reasons, including lower fuel costs and more manageable maintenance. Those lower costs on oftentimes large expenses can instead be used to fund student-based programs.
Better for Students Propane buses are also noticeably quieter than alternatives. Noise level and safety go hand-in-hand when considering that a quieter ride allows drivers to focus more on the road as student conversations are less likely to reach higher levels in an effort to be heard over engine noise. With less noisy distractions, drivers are able to hear what’s happening outside the bus – from horns and sirens to train whistles and more – and keep their riders safe. Additionally, the less distracting engine noise may allow drivers to more easily notice and address bullying behavior on the bus. Explore the switch from diesel buses to cleaner alternatives by downloading resources available at BetterOurBuses. com, and consider starting a discussion with your children’s school district.

Families who qualify for the program still pay for the mortgage on the home, although they do receive an interest free loan, they must put in sweat equity not only their project, but on many others! After they select their homesite, they are able to select from various floor plans that fit the space and are able to choose from the available finishes/ design schemes so that their home is truly customized to their taste. And since most of the labor consists of volunteer hours, these families are provided with an affordable mortgage. We look forward to watching and chronicling the building of the Abebe’s home on Oak Street. They should hopefully be moved in by Thanksgiving and we can’t wait to see their excitement!

Building a Balanced Diet with a Better Sandwich F FAMILY FEATURES
ad diets come and go, and as many Americans find, so do the pounds they lose. Most experts agree that eliminating, or drastically reducing, any of the major foods groups from your diet can be detrimental to your health and prevent you from achieving long-term healthy eating goals. Each of the food groups plays a distinct role in fueling your body and providing it with the vitamins and nutrients it needs. Attempt a well-rounded approach to eating, such as one that includes more nutritious choices for popular dishes like sandwiches. In general, pay attention to the variety, amount and nutrition of the foods you consume. Consider these ideas for creating a balanced diet and a nutritious sandwich to help ensure you get enough of each food group:
Start from the Outside There are two groups of grains: whole grains and refined grains. Whole grains contain the entire grain kernel, while refined grains have been milled for a finer texture and are required to be enriched per government mandate to help the population make up for 26 | August 2019 WeAreCELINA.com
nutrient shortfalls. Grains should account for about one quarter of each meal, but at least half of them should be whole grains – a fact that may surprise some people. “Many health professionals mistakenly encourage consumers to skip the bread when trying to improve diets,” said Yanni Papanikolaou from Nutrition Strategies Inc., who completed a study to assess the energy and nutrients contributed from sandwiches in diets of children and adolescents. “Americans need to think twice before cutting bread from their diets. In fact, bread packs more of a nutrient punch than a caloric one.” The ingredients inside a sandwich, not the bread itself, are the most significant drivers of calories, fat and sodium, according to Papanikolaou’s research. A separate study published in the journal “Nutrients” shows grain foods contribute less than 15 percent of all calories in the total diet, while delivering greater than 20 percent of three shortfall nutrients – dietary fiber, folate and iron – and
greater than 10 percent of calcium, magnesium and vitamin A. Consumers can significantly and positively impact their caloric, fat and sodium intake by making more deliberate decisions about sandwich ingredients, including choosing either whole-grain or enriched-grain bread. Find more information about the role of grains in a healthy diet at GrainFoodsFoundation.org.
Rethink the Ingredients Making more nutritious choices with sandwiches and positively impacting your consumption of calories, fat and sodium is oftentimes a matter of changing the way you stack ingredients between the bread. Consider this sample sandwich: two slices of whole-grain or enriched bread, 2-3 slices of lunchmeat, two slices of cheese, a few spinach or lettuce leaves and a slice of tomato. Contrary to popular belief, research shows that sandwich eaters who choose either whole- or enriched-grain bread can consume less calories, fat and sodium compared to the typical sandwich consumed in the American diet. This demonstrates the need to focus on the ingredients between the bread for a better (more healthful) sandwich. Try a different take on a lunchtime favorite by adding spicy horseradish to this Roast Beef and Arugula Sandwich, or make packing a lunch even simpler with this Ultra-Thin Pastrami Sandwich Lunchbox.
Protein According to the USDA, most Americans get about the right amount of protein in their diets, but could do better at choosing leaner options and adding more variety to their menus. Incorporating more variety doesn’t have to mean sacrificing convenience. For example, while prepared meats like deli meats, hot dogs and jerky are sometimes a target of critics, numerous studies and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans affirm they can be part of a healthy, balanced diet. Prepared beef products provide a convenient source of protein, vitamins and minerals. Because most prepared meats are pre-cooked, they offer consumers easy, on-the-go access to the nutrient density in meat. The prepared meats category is diverse and offers choices to meet nutrition needs, tastes, budgets and personal preferences. Thousands of products are available in the meat case, including lowand reduced-sodium products, low- and reduced-fat products, American Heart Association-certified, organic, Kosher grass-fed options and more. Weeds Getting to You?? Get the Vinegar!!
For the organic gardener, vinegar can function as a handy natural weed killer. It’s the acetic acid in vinegar that gives it power to kill weeds. The higher the percentage of acid in the vinegar, the better it will operate as a natural weed killer, technically speaking. Vinegar used for culinary purposes is relatively low (5%) in acetic acid, so repeated applications could be necessary when using it as a natural weed killer. Be Careful If you’re battling lawn weeds, take care to apply the vinegar directly onto the weeds themselves, not letting it come into contact with your grass. Why? Because the fact that vinegar is a natural weed killer doesn’t mean it can’t be harmful if misused. Vinegar is non-selective, and this natural weed killer can harm your grass! To avoid damage to grass, consider “painting” the vinegar directly onto weeds with a brush. If you do spray with vinegar, don’t pull the trigger until you’re right up close to the targeted weed. Don’t spray on a windy day, as the wind could carry your vinegar spray where you don’t want it to go -- on your grass. I prefer to save the inside of a paper towel roll and isolate what I’m spraying just to be safe! Because of this limitation, I don’t think of vinegar as being an especially effective natural weed killer for lawn areas for the general public. It makes more sense to use vinegar in areas where lawn grass and other landscaping plants won’t be in the way, such as on patios or walkways (where you have weeds pushing up through cracks etc..). But if you’re already in the process of digging a dandelion out of the lawn, it wouldn’t hurt to supplement your efforts with vinegar. After you’ve removed as much of the taproot as possible, carefully pour some vinegar into the hole. The vinegar will seep down into the soil, killing any portions of taproot you may have missed. Afterwards, shovel soil into the hole and sow grass seed on top, lest any opportunistic weed seeds should fill the vacuum.
28 | August 2019 WeAreCELINA.com
There’s another limitation in using vinegar as a natural weed killer, but this limitation extends to chemical weed killers, as well: namely, that you’ll probably have to re-apply the vinegar to get the job done, as weeds often refuse to go quietly. This is especially true of established perennial weeds, toughened by years of coping with environmental challenges; vinegar will be more effective on younger weeds. Older weeds are like people, they tend to fight back! But considering that vinegar is safe and relatively inexpensive, this objection is hardly a telling argument against the use of vinegar as a natural weed killer. If your goal is to use a natural weed killer, one assumes that you’ll be motivated to make repeated applications, as necessary. When to Apply When practicing natural weed control, take to heart the dictum, Know thine enemy! Study up on the weeds you’re fighting before you use the vinegar on them. Target annual weeds with your vinegar natural weed killer before they set seed, to prevent them from spawning a new generation to give you fits next year. By contrast, early fall is the best time to use this natural weed killer on perennial weeds. Early fall is when you’ll want to apply vinegar to dandelions (but snap off the flowers whenever they appear, to prevent them from going to seed). Dandelions, although their leaves die back in winter, do live on through their roots. So, preventing them from going to seed sometimes isn’t enough. Fortunately, knowing a little botany can help you considerably in your battle with perennial weeds like dandelions. You see, in early fall, nutrients are transferred from the dandelion leaves down to the roots. This transfer, which continues until the first frost, presents you with an opportunity to hit dandelions where it hurts! Vinegar natural weed killer applied during this time is absorbed by the leaves and passed on to the roots, following the same path down as the nutrients. The plants are
killed -- naturally. Repeated applications could be needed. How to Apply Listen to your local weather forecast and find out when you will be experiencing a few continuous days of sunshine. At the beginning of this period, spray or paint the vinegar onto the weeds you wish to kill. Why is a sunny period required? Two reasons: You need to saturate the weeds’ leaves with the vinegar, and rain (or sprinkler) would wash too much of the vinegar off the foliage. The real damage to the sprayed weeds begins the next couple of days after the application, when the sun hits the leaves. Some people who use vinegar as a natural weed killer like to boil the vinegar, prior to application. Through such boiling, you may actually be able to gain a concentrate higher in acetic acid percentage, although I haven’t yet experimented with this option in any scientific way. But it certainly can’t hurt to boil the vinegar; in fact, many folks report success killing weeds by simply pouring scalding water on weeds! The Stronger Stuff It is possible to buy products with a higher acetic acid content than that found in ordinary vinegar. Such products can be purchased at farmer’s stores or from restaurant supply businesses. But the potency of these acetic acid products can render them less safe to use than household vinegar. To me, that puts them at odds with the whole concept of using “natural weed killers.” Besides, you have to go out of your way to find these products, and the idea behind the present article was to introduce a handy natural weed killer, something you can just pull off a kitchen shelf and experiment with.

Other Uses for Vinegar Those of you who have held an ongoing grudge against vinegar for its ability to make your mouth pucker and that smell that most kids hate may finally be able to grant vinegar forgiveness. For that same sourness makes vinegar the natural weed killer of choice for organic gardening. Vinegar can also be used for cleaning purposes around the home, as an alternative to chemical cleaners. If you rarely open that vinegar jug for purposes of seasoning your food, don’t despair: The uses for vinegar extend well beyond the culinary. Until next time...Happy Gardening!!
