February is a celebration of LOVE, which makes it a perfect pairing for the Celina Person of the Year edition! We are so honored to have had the opportunity to start this annual tradition…it has allowed us to connect with and recognize some amazing people who are doing the right thing and loving on the Bobcat community! Over and over again, what we heard from them is this… We love Celina because of the people – our leaders, our students and our citizens. These 12 individuals are just a small sampling of those who are making a difference in the community. We know there are more, and we plan to recognize as many as we can! Be on the lookout each month for a closer look at each of these individuals…our hope through this is to spread the love for Celina to everyone we reach!

n the fall of 2013, Celina Ladies & Friends President, Rachel Baty, began extensive research into the action steps necessary to bring a community farmers market to Celina. With a small group of dedicated volunteers and hundreds of volunteer hours, the dream became a reality on June 6, 2014 with the first Friday Night Market. The Market started with 12 vendors in 2014 and has grown to over 30 dedicated vendors! Market Director Michelle Baggett says, “My dream is that we can provide local resident with opportunities to purchase locally grown produce and handmade products from local artisans. Farmers can educate consumers on the health benefits of buying fresh and nutritious ingredients and offer delicious and hopefully different ways to prepare these foods.

The vision for the Friday Night Market on the Square is to bring a Farmers Market to Celina and to create a destination spot in our historic downtown square where community, local farmers, producers and artisians can come together. The Market offers fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables raised by local farmers as well as specialties like breads, honey, jams, herbs and handmade items. You can also enjoy live music from local musicians at each Market. The Celina Friday Night Market is proud to support a wide variety of local farmers, artisans, crafters, ranchers, vineyards, and many more. Vendors are the heart and soul of the market, and each vendor is carefully evaluated based upon whether their products are handmade, homemade, and/or home grown. Many of your favorite vendors will be back again in 2018, along with several new ones! Vendors interested in participating in 2018 should be sure to visit CelinaMarketOnTheSquare.com beginning February 1.

From the Desk of Rick DeMasters As it has been said, “February is the border between winter and spring.” It is a time where we have said goodbye to events and activities that have run their course during the first part of the school year, and have begun to welcome others that will sustain us through the spring and the first hints of summer.

If you consider yourself a sports enthusiast, the month of February gives you ample choices of sporting events to attend. From basketball to track, we have numerous games, matches and meets to choose from. Basketball is in full swing for our Junior High and High School teams. Our CHS Soccer team competes every Monday and Friday during the month of February and you will begin to see activity on our baseball and softball fields. High School powerlifting will have meets on February 15th and February 17th. Our golf teams will begin their season with tournaments scheduled for Monday, February 12th and Wednesday, February 21st. If you enjoy fishing, our CHS Fishing Team will compete on Saturday, February 10th at Lake Ray Hubbard. And last, but not least, our High School Track teams will host the Celina TriMeet on February 22nd, and the Junior High Track teams will kick off their season on February 27th. The Celina Primary campus will be hosting Family STEAM Night on February 5th, to provide an opportunity for primary parents to experience the STEAM Lab for themselves, from manipulating the magnetic wall to using simple tools such as drinking straws to understand the mechanics of engineering. Donny O’Dell Elementary will be hosting Pastries with Parents on February 6th, 7th and 8th. This is always a special time for our

elementary students. It provides a wonderful opportunity to get to know the staff at your child’s school and meet other parents as well.

It is also that time of year for our secondary students to learn about elective classes, core class selections, how to register, and what to expect in the next school year. For parents of current 6th and 7th grade students, please save February 15th and February 20th to your calendars. Meetings will be held at Celina Junior High starting at 6:00pm. Parents of current 8th graders will have an incoming Freshman meeting with CHS Counselors Carrie Crane and Kimberly Wilson on Tuesday, February 20th, at Celina High School. Celina’s Person of t he Year St arla Mart in Starla’s heart for the community is big and generous. She is constantly thinking of others, especially the children. Behind the scenes planning to help less fortunate, cooking dinners for sick, providing clothes, food, love, counsel to needy families, while leading by example her staff at Celina elementary. Her involvement in this community and her commitment to service to others makes her deserving…. she is humble and beyond a doubt a perfect Person of the Year.

“My life began in a quiet Texas town outside of Austin called Burnet. However, "quiet" does not accurately describe my upbringing. My family was crazy about two things: God and football. We were religious in both. My sweet mama and daddy loved me and my sister so well and taught us both so much. I loved my time in Burnet and was involved in many extracurricular activities. After graduation, I made a new home at Texas State University, graduating Cum Laude in Elementary Education. My first years of teaching were in Mesquite, where I simultaneously took classes at Texas A&M Commerce, earning a Masters in School Counseling.

My final move was to Celina as an elementary school counselor while pursuing a Masters in School Administration. I am currently serving my sixth year as Principal at Celina Elementary. Only two short weeks after moving here, Jordan Martin stumbled into my life. He quickly won me over with his charm, and we will soon celebrate our 10th year of marriage. We have four wonderful, rowdy boys: Jett, Jagger, Judd, and Jase, all of whom make me feel every bit of my age. What do I love about Celina? The people. This community is full of genuine, caring individuals who continue to put others before themselves. Celina is rich in tradition and pride. The school district and community have a strong partnership and are like-minded when it comes to our youth. All decisions made are in the best interest of the youth and future generations, while respecting those before us and preserving the foundation of what makes Celina so special. There is not another town like it!! It's the best! What is my vision for Celina? I am aware of the projection of growth and some of the future developments, but it is hard for me to assimilate or visualize. With growth comes opportunity. It is an exciting time for Celina. Change is hard, but often times it is inevitable. I know the school district and city are working diligently on a ten year+ plan to be proactive and prepared, so I feel we are in good hands. How did I feel when I heard the news about my nomination? Wow!! One morning I was lying in bed scrolling through Facebook when I noticed the link one of my friends had shared. I clicked on it link and proceeded to read through the names. It was a very emotional moment for me as I couldn't believe what I was reading. Some of the other nominees are dear friends of mine that definitely deserve this recognition. I am humbled and honored to be nominated for Person of the Year.

Jill Roza Nominated For: I nominate Jill Roza for Celina’s person of the year. Jill works for Celina ISD and wears many hats. My name is Jill Roza and my husband Joe and I are the parents to three wonderful children, Courtney, Kelsey, and Zach. I am also blessed to be a proud Juju to granddaughter MaciAnne and grandson Beckett! I’ve been in education for twenty-seven years, which eighteen of those have been with Celina ISD. I currently serve as the Parent/Community Liaison, District UIL Academic Coordinator, Director of CTown and CISD Communications for the Celina School District. When I was contacted regarding the nomination, it was incredibly humbling that someone felt I should be recognized, for which I am truly grateful for their faith in me. What I love about Celina cannot really be explained. It’s a wave at a neighbor or stranger as we pass each other on a country road. It’s the pride I witness when our community comes together at academic and sporting events. It’s also the outpouring of love and support to help not only those in our community, but strangers whose lives were forever changed by Hurricane Harvey. Lastly, it is the traditions that bind the history of our city and our schools to the youngest of our Bobcats to carry on into the future.

Leigh Booth Nominated For: Leigh didn’t even know me and came to my house in Anna and helped me pack up my household items & helped us move to Prosper. She is a single mom but her number one priority are her two children. She will help anyone who needs it. She is providing a very strong and loving home for her children. My husband and I have the greatest respect for her. Please consider her, she is a very well-grounded lady!

Jack Ousley Nominated For: Jack is always setting up fun events and helping out people around town. He’s always there when you need him and is very helpful and kind. Maxine Ousley lived in Celina for many years and taught dance in a studio behind her home. Jack was very close to his grandmother and in 2010, we moved to Celina because of all the wonderful memories he had every single time he visited her. Since we moved to Celina, Jack has dedicated his time and talents to the city in every capacity. He is chairman of the Main Street Board and volunteers for all the wonderful events the city hosts. Jack is also in Real Estate and loves to purchase old homes downtown and restoring them. Celina has always been a special place to Jack, his goal will always be to be a part of the growth while remembering the wonderful qualities of a small town. It may be that only his family knows how much heart and soul Jack puts into his work on behalf of improving Celina and its citizens. No one loves Celina more than Jack and his work with Main Street is a testament to that and the legacy of his ancestors, Celina founders and residents since the 1850’s. Jack has a phenomenally soft heart for Celina. He gives a tremendous amount of his time and effort with Main Street and his other civic endeavors. His family is woven into the history of Celina and with Jack, it shows. I am Jack Ousley, 5th generation to live in Celina. My family was one of the founding families of Celina when they came here in 1871. I am 50 years old and married to my beautiful wife Vivianne, we have four adult children, two who live in Celina. My love for Celina began as a child when my grandmother Maxine Ousley taught me about the animals she raised and the crops she grew. She also instilled her love of this community to me! I currently serve as chairman of the Celina Main Street board and the Historic Preservation commission. It is our goal to help revitalize the historic downtown and keep it as the center that brings this community together! I work with the city and community leaders to help foster growth here in Celina as well as preserving our past. My hopes are that we facilitate new growth in Celina with patience and attention to details, we have a great opportunity to develop in a way that allows for new growth and new communities without forgetting our past. I am honored and humbled by this nomination and proud to be mentioned in the same light as others who were nominated. Thank you and will see ya on the square!

Benjamin Aune Nominated For: Mr. Aune has been supremely impactful in Celina this year. He was hired as the Director of Bands at Celina High School last spring and immediately dove in ready to rebuild a dying program this summer. He has not only doubled the number of students in the band, he has reignited a fire in these students for music. He began a school Color Guard Team for the High School which has grown enough to be able to form a Winter Guard Team. The band competed at the UIL Marching Contest this fall receiving superior ratings. He has worked with Coach Elliott, Cheerleaders, and Las Gatitas to create the most school spirited football experience including community parades and pep rallies. He awed veterans at the community Veterans Day Program by conducting the band and choir along with Mr. Wilson in an Armed Forces Salute Medley which received a standing ovation. Most currently he is conducting select band members to play live music for the Celina High School Theater Department’s production of the Wizard of Oz. Mr. Aune coordinates efforts for many community events such as Celina’s own Christmas on the Square. He holds before school rehearsals, teaches all day at Celina High School and Junior High, and holds after school rehearsals. He should most definitely be considered for this honor. I love spending time in the outdoors with my family. I love to hike and fish. I am a devout fan of TCU athletics and my beloved Minnesota Vikings. This is my 15th year as a music educator. My favorite part about Celina is the people. We came to know very quickly when we moved here 4 years ago that Celina was a special place and it had to do with the people. The people in our neighborhood, at church, at work, and at school made us feel welcome. We quickly felt at home. I want the band program to add to the rich tradition of excellence that this city has produced. The band program should be the rallying point for community and school functions. As the city grows, we want to be a part of memorable community happenings whether it be at football games or in the downtown square.

Kira Merritt Nominated For: I nominate Kira Merritt for Person of the Year 2017. Kira works for the Celina Spirit Shack and works tirelessly even on her days off and after her designated hours to create spirit wear for the town of Celina to support their beloved Bobcats. She creates unique designs and does amazing work but Kira doesn’t just work there. Kira attends the games and pep rallies, gets to know the families and truly supports and cheers on the students of Celina ISD. Kira doesn’t have any children but she does have a niece and nephews who are in Celina Schools. It seems everyone in town knows her and loves her and hollers her name as they proudly wear their spirit wear. A lot of the kids drop in just to say Hi to her and even bring her snacks when they see her car parked out front. She’s a great role model and favorite Aunt to those kids and they all love and respect her so much. The moms and teachers in town come to her for cute and trendy fashion advice knowing she will make fun recommendations and the dads and coaches know that she’ll hook them up too with sporty and comfortable gear. She’s developed a relationship with this town and people stop in to share their lives with her. She has a huge heart and is their biggest cheerleader!

Dr. Kevin and Stephanie Shelton Nominated For: Dr. Shelton and his wife Stephanie have established a fast-growing family medical profession in the Celina area. He and his wife Stephanie have given unselfishly of their time to the community of Celina. They have been actively involved with their children in giving to the Celina community and schools. They came to the Celina area a little over 7 years ago with a dream to provide for the medical needs of the community. They started the Shelton Family practice in a small house on the South side of town, and kept their faith that they had found a community that they could call home. Currently in the 2-story house located next to the Celina Drugs Pharmacy, they have continued to believe in the Celina community and very soon are opening a new larger facility to meet the fast-growing needs of the Celina community. They are an exemplary example of the new face that change is bringing about to Celina. I am proud to nominate them for Celina Person of the Year. We have a family-owned medical practice that we opened from the ground up almost 10 years ago. We have three children, Jett, Addie and Celine. We were drawn to Celina because of its tight-knit community feel. We are excited to Celina’s future and not only look forward to growth, but also to the new community members. After almost 10 years of being in the community, it was a wonderful surprise to be nominated as Person of the Year. We are proud to represent the past, current and future of Celina…Go Bobcats!

Cleve Rasor Nominated For: If you live in Celina you know who Cleve Rasor is! Not only is he a 5th generation Collin County resident but he was born and raised in Celina. Cleve has owned Rasor Insurance right here in Celina for over 20 years. I have known Cleve for the entire 12 years my family and I have lived in Celina. If there was a networking group or event you can bet Cleve would be there and no business card needed because you know who he is. Cleve and I talked for well over 5 years about me coming to work for him and well it took me a long time to say yes and finally last April I did. My statement now is why did I not come over sooner?! Cleve is a great boss, business owner, insurance agent and resident of Celina. I am a 1993 graduate of Celina High School. I have been married to my wife Angie for 20 years and we have 2 children who attend school in Celina (daughter Addison 7th grade, son Robert “H” 3rd grade). I enjoy ranching, team roping, hunting and watching my kids play sports. I started Rasor Insurance from scratch in 2001. I am a past Chamber of Commerce director, past Chamber chairman of the board, past Master of the Celina Masonic Lodge, past Captain of the Celina QB Club and a member of First Baptist Church, where my wife and I teach 3rd grade. I received my BS in Animal Science from Tarleton State and my MS in Animal Science from New Mexico State. My favorite thing about Celina is the people. All of my life, the people here have been different from everywhere else. With all of the growth, we have somehow gotten lucky enough to keep on attracting more good folks! My vision for Celina is for us to stand firm in our values and culture as we grow. I realize that growth will mean that our population will become very diverse. I just hope that we can keep our Christian values and culture intact. I nearly dropped my phone when I read that I was nominated for person of the year. My first thought was “Surely there is someone else more deserving than me for this award!”

Cody Kincaid Nominated For: Cody Kincaid has shown exceptional skills as one of the newest members of the Celina PD force. He has been a part of the community for 17 years going to school here, working here and now working on the Celina Police Department. He has sacrificed his time and service for the community. I moved to Celina in 2002. I grew up in Celina and graduated from Celina High School in 2010. I graduated from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor’s of Science in Criminal Justice. I have two other brothers that work for Celina Fire Department and enjoy having the opportunity to be able to work in the same city as them. When I heard the news about being nominated, I felt honored. It’s a privilege to be nominated for Person of the Year.

Chris Carter Nominated For: Chris is the Senior Pastor of Movement Church located in downtown Celina Square. He has led the church in its first full year into great success and has guided our participation in many events for the community in 2017. He leads the church participation in virtually all Celina community events, including Trickor-Treat and Christmas on the Square. Additionally, he volunteers often as a Family Encourager at Grace Bridge. With all of that, he continues to be an active and loving father to his 3 children. He is an outstanding role-model, inspires many others become the best person they can be, and is determined to spread the love of Christ to everyone he comes across. I am married to an awesome woman, Angela Carter, and have 3 great kids: Gabriel (15), Kaylee (13), and Seth (11). We moved to Celina in June of 2014 to start Movement Church. Our family immediately fell in love with the City of Celina. We love the tradition, history, but most importantly we love the people. Our vision for the city as it continues to grow is to help people find LIFE, FREEDOM, and FULFILLMENT through a relationship with Jesus. I found out about the nomination by receiving a text message from a member of our church telling me “Congrats!” I of course said, “Thank You,” proceeded by “for what??” Hearing about it was very humbling, especially after seeing the entire list of people who have made a difference in other people’s lives. I’m just happy to be a part of this amazing community and look forward to seeing Celina continue to grow and flourish.

Ben and Kat Rogers Nominated For: This is a couple instead of a person because they contribute together in our community from organizing a fundraiser for a neighbor in Light Farms to donating time, influence and resources to nonprofits (like Cornerstone NCT) in the area – they care about people and serving them. Staples in the Celina community, the nomination should go to them as a couple – they are a great team! We have been married for 14 magical years and have been blessed with 3 spectacular kids: Max (12), Miles (10) and Grace (7). We live in Light Farms where neighbors are more than just polite strangers you waive at as you drive by — they’re some of your closest friends. A retired yoga instructor, Kat manages our three-ring kiddo circus & works part-time as a stylist for Stitch Fix. I’m incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to co-host a sportstalk radio show — The Ben and Skin Show on 105.3 The Fan — which provides me a platform me to talk about the teams I grew up rooting for and joke around with one of my childhood buddies along the way. Our family absolutely adores the immeasurable charm and warmth of Celina. The people here are beyond kind, and the endless sunsets on the wide-open horizon are nothing short of captivating. Celina has a unique mixture of special ingredients that makes it both comfortably cozy and flat-out flourishing. As newcomers to this area, having only lived here for 2 years, we believe the most important aspect in terms of the future of Celina will be to grow and evolve this amazing community with thoughtful consideration and respect for the rich tradition and wonderful people who made Celina what it is. As for this prestigious nomination, as anyone who has ever rolled up their sleeves and worked diligently for a charitable cause will tell you — when doing so, you will always receive far more than you could ever give. And while the short bio someone wrote on our behalf (when they nominated us) made mention of a few really special charitable efforts we’ve been fortunate to be involved in, it's imperative for us to get across that we were merely performing small roles in those important causes. To single us out would be to overlook folks way more deserving of credit. Having said that, on behalf of our entire family, thank you so much for this tremendous honor. Sizing Up Your Landscaping In terms of a good landscape design, scale is essential My plant-geek friends get mad when they hear me say that, but it’s true. Some of the best horticulturists I’ve ever known were terrible landscape designers. I won’t mention any names, but I certainly could! I don’t care how special, rare or expensive your plants are, without a well-constructed plan; you’re likely to have a huge horticultural mess on your hands. The best way to learn is to view as many great gardens as possible, either in books, magazines or preferably in person. Although I’ve heard experts toss out dizzying numbers of essential design principles, I’ve pared them down to five that I’m convinced gardeners can’t live without. These are balance, unity, repetition, dominance and scale. Commit them to memory, as I truly believe you can’t do a good design without them. Now let’s talk a little about scale. Scale (also known as proportion) is the relationship of individual parts to the other parts and the relationship of each part to the whole. In establishing scale within the landscape, people are the ultimate measure of all things. All aspects of the design must be in scale with its users. In other words, we shouldn’t create landscapes for the Jolly Green Giant, just little ol’ you and me. For those of you who look at magazines for the pictures instead of words, let me make this even easier. Big houses and yards need big beds and plants, while smaller homes and lots are more accommodating to smaller beds and plants. It’s really that simple. No matter how simple it may sound, it’s still going to take a little work and thought on your (or your designer’s) part. First, you must take a look at your

house, yard and surroundings and decide what scale you have inherited. Is your home one story or two? Are you surrounded by neighbors’ fences or acres of pasture? Is your existing landscape peppered with clumps of small trees, like Yaupon Holly and Texas Mountain Laurel, or lorded over by towering Oaks and Elms? It really doesn’t matter what you actually own when it comes to sizing up a landscape. Anything within your view should really be considered “your” landscape. If you can see it, it counts, whether it’s in your yard or not. This is what designers call the “borrowed” landscape. Although it’s very important to design on a human scale, it’s equally important to relate your landscape to your surroundings, no matter how large or small. The next big move in making scale work for you in your landscape is taking incremental steps up or down, depending on what you are trying to relate to. In other words, if you have a small house surrounded by large trees you should use something medium-sized between them to help tie them together. If you don’t, the large trees will be out of scale with your small home. On the other hand, if you have a two-story house, foundation plantings of dwarf shrubs will be out of scale with your larger home. In this case, you need some tall and medium-sized plants to tie your home to your landscape. It’s also important not to wrap narrow beds around larger homes. In my opinion, the scale most “do-it-yourselfers” use is too small. Landscapes can also grow out of scale over time. It’s not uncommon for “small” one-gallon plants eventually to grow into overwhelming monsters. At some point, certain plants will have to be cut back or removed entirely to remain in scale with your home. My wonderful 3rd grade art teacher at Hexter Elementary, Mrs. Manning, always had us look at our artwork from the very back of the classroom each day. Things never look the same from afar. It’s very important to view your landscape standing at the road, edge of your yard or even farther away if

you can. It will make your job of calculating scale much easier. Don’t be surprised if some of your hard work has disappeared entirely. Unlike traditional art, landscapes are everchanging. But that’s a large part of their beauty. We never grow tired of sizing them up!

I really enjoy reading your columns and have found them to be very helpful. Thank You, -Darlene M. in Celina Answer: Hi Darlene! All woody type plants must be moved while they are dormant. That basically means late November to mid February. For the record, Crape Myrtle trees are more forgiving than almost all other woody plants so you could add a couple of weeks to both sides of those times. Question: Jimmie, what can I do with a braided Fig tree that has grown 8 feet tall in an 8-foot-tall room? It’s doing too good! Thank You, Sandi S. in Celina Answer: Hi Sandi! Trim it back gently so it will fit. Withhold any major feedings so that its growth will slow. The good news is that your plant is happy with the conditions you have provided for it. The bad news is that it is a tree that grows to 80 to 100 feet tall in nature. It’s only a matter of time until you decide to move on. Consider using it as a shade-area patio tree over the summer and then putting it into a bright garden room or greenhouse in the winter. Celina resident John Jones Works on Unfinished Business on the Way to American Ninja Warrior By Joyce Godwin

John Jones got the call of a lifetime last year after attempting for several years for a chance at the American Ninja Warrior competition. He was invited to travel to San Antonio to be an official participant for American Ninja Warrior, an American sports entertainment competition. The competition features hundreds of competitors attempting to complete a series of obstacle courses of increasing difficulty, trying to make it to the national finals on the Las Vegas Strip, in hopes of becoming an "American Ninja Warrior.” This year will be its tenth season and Jones plans to be there one way or another. Five years ago, Jones weighed 195 pounds and says he was an alcoholic and a chain smoker. While watching television with his daughter, she made a playful comment that he was too old to do the things on the ANW obstacle course. He was 36 then. Now he weighs in around 165 pounds and has stopped drinking alcohol and smoking. “She planted a seed in my head and it kind of stuck into what it is today,” Jones said. “Obviously, I quit all that stuff and started working out, but I didn't have any idea of what I was doing.” Jones said he found a local gym in Dallas and met people there with a greater understanding of how to reach his goal.

The application process for ANW involves a video of the applicant. He said the video that first year was terrible, but he didn’t know how it should be. He didn’t get the call he wanted the first year. So, the second year, he hired someone to produce it. The results were no better. It wasn’t until partnering with the Celina High School students in the Audio-Visual program for a quality video last year, that he finally got the invitation to run that course. Jones says Jordan Harklau, a junior last year, took over his video project and produced something spectacular. Jones believes that video is what made the difference to get him into the competition. This year the video project is being coordinated by Tyler Tombaugh, a senior, and Jones says it will also be entered into the UIL competition in the short film category. When Jones appears at ANW this year, he’ll be proudly wearing a shirt designed to represent CISD. It’s the traditional Celina orange with the gray and white logo Jones has chosen for his campaign. It declares “Achieve More” and that is Jones’ plan. He says that silly comment his daughter made five years ago was the catalyst that caused him to change his entire life. Since that time, he has met and married his wife Amanda and moved to Celina where she has been an educator for 18 years. He changed his job to construction, remodeling homes, which led to a contract installing cabinets in hotels across the country so he travels a lot. When at home, he says he likes having work, so he started substitute teaching at CISD. But through all of his work endeavors, and his irregular schedule, his work-out regimen continues. After the outcome in San Antonio, at home in Celina, Jones and his wife met with his training team to figure out a new plan. “We put together a new training program,” he said. “Training sessions became more intense and a lot longer.” He said he was picked up by Elite Performance as a sponsor and they helped him put together a new training program. “Now I train six days a week with varied programs and locations,” he said. When asked if there are times when he doesn’t want to work out,

his response was, “Sweet Mary, yes. There are days I don’t want to go. Sometimes the best workouts are the ones I don't want to go to. Sometimes I have to ask myself how bad do I want to do this.” He said he realizes a lot of eyes are paying attention to what he’s doing. It’s not just about John Jones.

He remembers a quote from Bruce Lee that continues to inspire him. “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” Jones says it’s the little things like that. “I will practice it over and over. It’s not about being skinny and fit,” Jones said. “It’s about being balanced and skilled. And then there is the diet.” Jones says he follows a ketosis diet and it’s difficult to keep. As a matter of fact, the day he spoke with us for this interview was his cheat day and he said with great excitement he had already called in his order for Jimbo’s Pizza. Regularly, Jones keeps his carbohydrate count as close to zero as possible in a day. “The most would be around 15 but that doesn’t count the natural carbs that come from avocados and nuts,” he said. “Natural carbs are good for you.” Jones talks about his first trip to the ANW and says he will approach things differently this year, which will be held in Dallas at Fair Park. “Running the course is intimidating,” Jones said. “It was my rookie year and when we got there, I thought I had to watch others run it and wanted to know the course like the back of my hand. There is so much going on and you are so excited your adrenaline is going like crazy.” He said that standing on the stage with the cameras on him, all that intimidation went away. He became more focused with what was in front of him and all the hype around him fell away. He said last year, he and his family did a lot of site seeing while they were there, but this year will be different. This year is about finishing what he started. He hopes to take everything he’s done this year and apply it to the course. The event is filmed overnight and not in the daytime, so he plans to condition himself before the competition to be alert and functioning during the night hours. Eliminating distractions will be a good game changer and will help.
