CISD News

From the Desk of Mr. Rick DeMasters Celina ISD Superintendent of Schools In retrospect, it doesn’t seem possible that a year has gone by since being named Superintendent of Celina ISD. Last February, we began navigating a path with the help of administrators, teachers, parents, business owners and community members. The Strategic Planning Committee was formed and over the next eight months our mission, vision, strategic priorities, objectives and measures were created. It was during those sessions that our new motto came into focus. “Paving The Way For The Future,” was chosen and could not be more fitting with all that has transpired over the past year. Paving the way has literally meant the pouring of concrete for our new elementary campus scheduled to open for the fall of 2017. Assistant Superintendent over Maintenance and Operations, Mr. Bill Hemby continues weekly meetings with the building contractors to keep current on construction conditions. Furniture and playground equipment are next on a long list of projects to be completed. Mr. Hemby has spent much time researching school equipment and what will be the best fit for our new campus. The physical building is just a small part of the total equation of the work that goes into a new campus. Campus configuration is a tedious process which involved the splitting of personnel between the two elementary campuses. Central Office Administration spent many months analyzing information to create grade level teams that are equally strong across the two campuses. We have a group of “Rock Solid” teachers and staff that are committed to doing what is in the best interest of the students they serve. Their new assignments were released to them during the first week of January, which has allowed them time to prepare and become familiar with those that will be on their teams next year. Another important part of the equation was the creation of attendance

boundaries for the elementary campuses. The district has never had to travel this path, but with the building of a second elementary campus, the district sought the help of Templeton Demographics. The Celina Board of Trustees approved the demographer’s recommendations to establish the boundaries for the elementary campuses during their January Board meeting. Many factors were taken into consideration as this process developed that included the following variables: 1. How to create equalization on both campuses with all programs. 2. Dividing the Economically Disadvantaged to refrain from creating campuses of “haves and have nots.” 3. Identifying all categories by addresses to include grade levels, ethnicity and special programs. 4. Attendance areas that would be largely contiguous and would create a clear division of boundaries. 5. Establishing a standard of creating neighborhood schools as we continue to grow. 6. Evaluating transportation routes to be as efficient as possible with much consideration given to minimal ride times within established boundaries. 7. Establishing attendance zones designed to serve the district 3 to 5 years without additional boundary changes. 8. Allowing the campuses to “initially” open with smaller school populations slated with higher anticipated growth rates. 9. Utilization of all district facilities to best facilitate growth and maximize academic programs. With the findings from the demographers and the research presented on the growth that will be steadily hitting the area, the youngest of our

Bobcats will also be attending a new campus in the fall of 2017. Celina Primary School will open on what is presently the Intermediate campus and will be home to our PPCD, Prekindergarten and Kindergarten students. We are very excited to have this opportunity to open a campus focused on setting a firm foundation of knowledge and skills that will have even the youngest of our Bobcats paving their paths towards the future. A year ago, I began a journey down a path with the help of a strategic planning team, who navigated through obstacles and detours to create a road map for our students, our parents, our teachers and our district. I know that in the future our path, will at times be under construction, but our students will successfully navigate through any obstacles in their way with the knowledge that they are supported by not only their parents, but administrators, teachers, and community members helping them to arrive at their final destination, that of SUCCESS.

The Celina Quarterback Club and Bobcat Moms teamed up once again to host the annual Celina Bobcat Football Banquet, celebrating the 2016 season. Over 400 people were in attendance, making this year’s banquet the largest to date. Brooks Barr, Celina Quarterback Club Captain, served as Master of Ceremonies for the event, which recognized coaches, players, trainers, administration and support organizations. Athletes from the three sub-varsity football teams were presented certificates of recognition by CHS coaching staff. Celina Head Coach and Athletic Director, Bill Elliott, presented the Varsity awards along with individual player statistics. Each year, the Celina Quarterback Club presents ten awards to outstanding athletes. Assisting Barr with the awards presentation were Celina Quarterback Club Co-Captains Chad Schramme and Business Manager, Brian Roach. The Bobcats went 11-3 in 2016, ending the season as Conference 4A, Division 2 Regional Semi-Final Champions. Three senior Bobcats have committed to play football at the university level and will be signing letters of intent on National Signing Day, which is February 1. Luke Melton will be wearing orange once again at Sam Houston State University. Hayden Reed has committed to Emporia State University in Kansas. And John Franklin has chosen to play for Texas A&M Commerce.

Celina Junior High Partners with Chamber to Make a PAWS-itive Impact on Students

It's a question asked of students starting as early as kindergarten: “So what do you want to be when you grow up?” Many children have their minds made up at an early age, some are overwhelmed with the choices, and a great number just haven't a clue. Celina Junior High School Principal, Russell McDaniel, says that's exactly why he is excited to have partnered with the Celina Chamber of Commerce on a new initiative offering students the opportunity to explore a variety of fields of interest and making the experience as immersive as possible. “This is the first month to try it”, said McDaniel. “The program is part of a behavior initiative celebrating positive choices of our students.” Each month, approximately a dozen students from CJHS are chosen by random drawing to leave campus for lunch at a local restaurant to meet with Celina Chamber President, Melissa Cromwell, and a number of area business leaders. To be entered into the drawing, students must meet certain criteria on the “Principal's 100”. The criteria is based off the PAWS system:

14

CelinaMagazine.com | February 2017

In January, the group met at Papa Gallos. Cromwell addressed the students and explained the duties of a chamber of commerce. She also passed around a large binder full of business cards of members for the kids to go through in an effort to show just how many different career opportunities are available. Cromwell said, “You don't have to know what you want to do today, but do not limit yourselves.” In addition to Cromwell, local business leaders Tony Petrill with Legal Shield, Karla Scheve, a financial planner also spoke a little about their professional experience. Quite a few of the students in attendance said they had a good idea of the path they wanted to take. Hailey Clark said she wants to be a criminal lawyer so she can, “get all the juicy details.” Ava Lewis, Sonia Flores, and Nicole Jamroz want to go into the medical field in some capacity. Tarron Willis has his mind set on a career in the military as a pilot. Whatever path these students eventually take, having mentors within the community helping explore future fulfilling career paths, is the first step toward success.

n August of 2004, when Prosper was a one-stoplight town and Preston was a two lane Texas highway, Dr. Jill Sentlingar opened Prosper’s first dental practice, Prosper Family Dentistry. She opened Prosper Family Dentistry with a desire to develop a family dental practice focused on comprehensive oral health care founded on building relationships in the dental chair and in the community. In 2006, Dr. Lara Coseo joined the practice to serve the needs of the growing community. With the addition of Dr. Cara Kessler in August 2016, Prosper Family Dentistry is now prepared to grow with the town’s booming population well in to

the future. The Prosper Family Dentistry team has over 120 years of combined experience and they are committed to quality care where the patient comes first. They strive each day to increase the value of their services by incorporating the latest technological advances while still adhering to well founded and time proven principles.
