Family

Celebrating Valentine’s Day with the Entire Family hile some might consider Valentine’s Day just a Hallmark holiday, it’s actually a great opportunity to have some fun with your children and shower them with love! Not just for lovers anymore, February 14th is the perfect day to teach your children about the importance of caring for others. Celebrate with a simple “I love you” first thing in the morning and then try out some of these other ideas throughout the day…your children will benefit from the extra attention and the focus on love!

W

TALK LOVE Make it a point to have at least one family meal on Valentine’s Day, whether it be breakfast or dinner. During the meal, talk about Valentine’s Day and love…spend that precious time together telling them how much you love them and how much they mean to you. Talk about what love really is and what it means to you. Talk about the love you have you have for your spouse, your family, your friends…and how those loves are different, but so meaningful and important. Ask them what they love and how they show it, and what ways they like to be shown they are loved in return. You might be surprised with what they have to say! READ LOVE Take some time beforehand and find a few special books about Valentine’s Day and about love. Share them with your children and have a story hour at home reading about love. Or, take them to the library and let them pick out a few books of their own. Either way, keep the focus on reading and sharing the stories about love…the snuggles and the stories about love are worth their weight in gold.

6 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

EAT LOVE Make a special Valentine’s Day treat to enjoy after school or for dinner. You can get creative by decorating heart shaped cookies or making a heart shaped pizza. Or you can keep it simple and make a sandwich and then using a heart shaped cookie cutter to remove the crusts. Again, the focus is on love and finding ways to show that to one another. SHOW LOVE The most important thing you can teach your children is what it means to love others – and the best way to do this is to model that behavior! Make it a point to give your child extra hugs and kisses. Tell your child about your favorite memory of them…the story about the day they were born or the moment you were most proud of them. Or find your favorite photo of them, write on the back of it why it’s your favorite and frame it for their room…it’s a wonderful reminder every day of your love for them. You can also show them how to care for others and the world around them… volunteering to help those in need, being kind and/or donating to causes that are important to your family. Through these actions, your child will learn the value of love and compassion. PLAY LOVE Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to let loose and just have fun with your children! Keep the focus on love-themed activities. Sing your favorite love songs together, play a game of Pin the Heart on Cupid, or enjoy some time together decorating Valentine’s Day cards to give to their classmates, friends and family. These moments will make for some great memories and the love you share will carry over all year long!

CISD News

This is our Neighborhood By Rick DeMasters, Superintendent of Celina ISD

“Often when you think you’re at the end of something, you’re at the beginning of something else,” is a quote by the one and only Mr. Fred Rogers, who was such an advocate for children and wanted everyone to feel that they were welcome in his neighborhood. Last month, I shared my resignation letter with all of you. This time next year, I will begin a new chapter away from what has been my neighborhood for many years, but until then there is much to accomplish before this season draws to a close. From the first day of school to the end of January, the district has welcomed 85 students. Templeton Demographics 2019 Fall enrollment projection totaled 2,806 students. Present enrollment figures total 2,816. Donny O’Dell Elementary and Celina Junior High are witnessing the most growth as compared to the other campuses. This figure is actually less than first projected. Weather has had a significant effect on construction projects throughout the area. Developers who once thought that their homes would be on the ground last spring are now six to eight months behind. Rainy conditions have delayed the completion of roads going to and from new subdivisions and without these roads, the construction timetable for new campuses must also be addressed. With that said, current construction projects are underway. Celina Elementary campus renovations are taking shape. Steel is going up, followed by exterior walls and once the roof is installed, the weather becomes less of a factor on the overall timeline for completion of this project. The new playground was completed over winter break and is being enjoyed by our faculty and students. The new parking lot is being formed and should be completed soon as long as the weather remains consistent. The Celina Athletic Complex is in the process of adding dressing areas to the west of the indoor practice facility. On the north side of the dressing areas will be public restrooms and a concession stand that will serve the new softball and baseball complex. To the east of the indoor practice facility, field events to include, pole vault, long/triple jump, shot and discus areas will start to take shape. All of these surfaces to include the softball and baseball fields will be turf, which will eliminate the maintenance required for non-turf fields.

8 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

Even with construction at their doorstep, CHS Athletics is a whirlwind of activity with many different sports competing at one time. During the month of January, the CHS Cheer Competition Team traveled to Ft. Worth to compete for the first time in school history at the UIL State Spirit Competition. The team finished 12th out of 87 4A schools. We are extremely proud of their hard work and finishing as one of the Top 20 teams in the State. Basketball, powerlifting and soccer are traveling to competitions throughout the week. Baseball and softball seasons have started, and our first track and field competitions will be held this month. Our Special Olympic Athletes recently competed in a basketball competition held at Austin College. They came home with nine 1st place, seven 2nd place, ten 3rd place, and four 4th place medals. They have one more basketball competition before they start training for Track and Field. The team was also outfitted with new warm-ups to wear to their events. When they debuted their new uniforms, team members were so excited to be covered head to toe in Bobcat orange! There is nothing better in this world than attending a Special Olympics competition. The spirit of sportsmanship is evident in every event and the joy one feels, whether you are there as a competitor, parent, or spectator stays with you long after the competition is over. It is also that time of year when the district calendar becomes very colorful and is stretched to capacity. This is due to the fact that there are just not enough days in the month to schedule all of the regular activities that happen during the spring semester. Sprinkle in a little weather and special events and our parents find themselves attending multiple events on one night. This is our neighborhood. From contests to construction, there is never a break in the action at Celina ISD.

Go Bobcats!

Happy Valentine’s Day Celina! By Mayor Sean Terry

The month of February is upon us, the time of year when we turn our attention to matters of the heart. It’s no coincidence that February includes Valentine’s Day and is also Heart Health Month. As we celebrate Valentine’s Day with chocolates, flowers, and dinner dates, let’s also be sure to pay attention to the health of our loved ones.

a half hour and features a look at the downtown area. In addition to Alexis Jackson, Rebecca Barton and myself, episode one includes a conversation with Dante Ramirez of Tender Smokehouse. The podcast, which is also posted on our website, www.celina-tx.gov/podcast is another great way to stay connected.

February is also a great time to connect with your City. Our official tagline, after all, is Life Connected. In that vein, the City is offering several ways to deepen our connections. By the way, our sincerest thanks to those of you who took the time to share your thoughts on our new tagline during last month’s Town Hall Meeting. In addition to your great comments on Life Connected, the Town Hall Meeting served as a great way to initiate connections with our staff and with fellow residents.

Staying connected also means taking part in our annual special events. Virtually the entire year is jam-packed with events and activities that encourage connections. Check out our website, www.celina-tx.gov for a list of the 2020 events and dates.

Also, as part of our efforts to develop and deepen our connections, I’m very pleased to invite you to join us at our first Coffee with the Council event. It’s scheduled for Lucy’s on the Square on Wednesday, February 12 from 7:00am to 9:00am on a come-and-go basis. We’ll provide the coffee and pastries and hope that as many of you as possible can come by, have a cup of coffee, share your thoughts, and help us put our tagline into action. We’ll try to have as many of these Coffee with the Council events as possible and move them from place to place, giving residents a chance to visit different businesses and restaurants downtown. Speaking of downtown, the City’s first podcast, called Life in Celina, features conversations that center on the downtown area and businesses. Find it by searching for Life in Celina on iTunes. The first episode is about 10 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

Another way to stay connected is to attend our City Council meetings. We meet on the second Tuesday of the month starting at 5:00pm in the Celina ISD board room. If you can’t make the meetings, visit the City’s Facebook page or YouTube channel where I’ll provide summaries of our meetings. Finally, we’re extremely excited about the opening of our second fire station in the Light Farms subdivision. The fire station, appropriately called “The Farm House,” was officially put into service on January 24. We invite you to join us for an Open House on February 29 from 11:00am to 1:00pm. It’s a come-and-go event, with lunch, activities for the kids, and station tours. Remember to fly your flag on Presidents Day, Monday, February 17. City Hall will be closed that day. Happy Valentine’s Day to all!

Grand Opening Held for City’s Second Fire Station Station 2: The Farm House

Fire protection in Celina has expanded on the western side of the City, there is now a second fire station in the Light Farms neighborhood. The City of Celina held a Grand Opening on January 31 for Fire Station No. 2 at 1805 Light Farms Way, Celina. The station was operational on January 24, when they responded to their first call from the new location. Construction began in 2018 with the goal of getting something completed quickly to accommodate the rapid growth. Celina Fire Chief Mark Metdker said, “Celina is spread over so much land area, it’s difficult to cover the entire city with just one ambulance, so the new station houses a second ambulance and an additional fire engine.” One of Celina FD’s two brush trucks was moved to Station 2, as well. The City received $2,557,440 dollars in grant money from the Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) to staff the new station.

Response District Map for Station 2’s service area:

“This opening is a commitment to a pledge made to serve Western Celina with the firstrate fire protection that we deliver elsewhere. Fire Station 2 will secure the future, covering one of the fastest-growing areas of our community.” -Chief Metdker

There will be an Open House for the public on Saturday, February 29th from 10:00am – 2:00pm. There will be station tours, activities, giveaways and lunch will be provided. Please join in the fun and the excitement at 1805 Light Farms Way! 12 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

Life & Luxury Magazine™

Celina Person of the Year Congratulations to these incredible individuals who work so hard to make Celina THE place to live and raise our families! We reached out to the community for nominations, and these folks were recognized for the following reasons – some were nominated by multiple people, so we just combined their nominations. Please take a moment to go VOTE for favorite and when you see them around town, take a moment to say THANK YOU for all that they do for Celina. We’ll be announcing the winner in next month’s issue! Cheryl Hutson: I’ve never seen a teacher connect and teach kids quite like Mrs. Hutson. She doesn’t just teach, she makes an impact that is lifelong. She continues to love and support every kid that has come through her class well beyond the year she has them. She finds ways for each child to reach their fullest potential. Loretta Francis: She’s been a big part of all our kids’ lives for way over 20 years encouraging them to be actively fit and healthy and Celina is blessed to have her! Terry Grayson: Coach Grayson, an educator and coach for over a decade, joined Celina ISD this year at Celina High School as a science teacher and football and track coach. His prior coaching experiences in Texas were at Frisco Centennial and Dallas Jesuit. Coach Grayson has lived in Celina for almost 5 years where he has coached youth teams for his children in football and basketball and has served as a Watchdog Dad at Celina Primary and O’Dell Elementary. He inspires all to do their best, is an enthusiastic servant of Christ, loves his athletes as though they were his own biological children, has the best smile ever, and is the greatest family man ever- just ask his mother-in-law! Terry never meets a stranger and always finds the time to help anyone in need. He represents Celina well! Lori Gibbs: This person deserves the honor of Celina Person of the Year because she has served CISD for almost 17 years. Lori and her family moved to Celina in the fall of 2002, and she began teaching 6th grade at CISD in 2003. She taught 6th and 7th grade at Celina Middle School for 5 years before becoming an Assistant Principal. She served as Assistant Principal at Celina Middle School for 6 years, with a short stint as Interim Principal at Celina Elementary School. She moved to the Assistant Principal position at Celina High School in 2015 and this is her 5th year in that position. Lori is the mother of two children, boy & girl twins, Gage and Grace. Both of her children were raised in Celina and they will graduate in the spring. In December of 2013, Lori was diagnosed with breast cancer. She never missed a beat, and stayed busy with work, her children’s activities, and numerous radiation appointments. In March of 2014, she received the news that the cancer was gone! This year is Lori’s 30th year in Texas public education. She has remained active in her church choir, Fidelis Inter Se, and numerous other committees and activities. If anyone deserves this honor, it’s one of Celina’s biggest inspirations and supporters, Lori Gibbs. Michelle Baggett: My wife has faithfully served the city for the last 5 years by starting the Friday Night Market as well as serving on the Main Street Board as the Vice President and actively supports the community through volunteering at Cajun Fest, Meet the Bobcats, and Oktoberfest. However most importantly she does all of these things while serving her family with compassion and grace. I am proud to call her my wife!

16 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

Ralph O’Dell: Mr. O’Dell is very active in Rotary and Celina Senior Citizen’s group. Steve Robinson: I would like to nominate Steve Robinson of Celina, Tx. Steve was born and raised in Celina. The Robinsons have been farming in Celina since 1879, five generations! Steve is fourth generation to farm on the Robinson Farm. When he is not plowing, sowing, harvesting, fixing tractors, and tending to the cows he donates his time to serving as a board member on the Alla Hubbard trust, benefiting CISD. He is a director on the Grayson-Collin Electric Cooperative, which serves rural Celina. He has served on the tollway expansion committee. He is a man who loves to serve. Every Sunday you will find him standing at the doors of his church greeting his church family. In the past, Steve served on the CISD school board, helped frame the Boy Scouts of Celina, served as a deacon at a local baptist church, member of the FSA—Farming Service Agency County committee, and donated his time to the Quarterback Club. His daughter, Leigh Ann, recounts his time as helping the community as a beekeeper. When there were bees, Steve was called to remove the hive and relocate to a safer place. I am nominating Steve Robinson because I would like to see a pioneer of our community, who continues to serve, as a Celina Person of the Year. God bless our farmers and God bless Steve! Jennifer Blanco: Jennifer serves in many areas of the community. She is active on the city of Celina library board, the band booster club, and the band board. She organizes the volunteers and all the going’s on for the concession stands at the new stadium. She also works for Grace Bridge Resale. She is the first to volunteer to help a student, coworker, and participant. I’m honored to know her. Janee Eatmon: Janee Eatmon loves Celina. As a board member for Celina Ladies and Friends she has given so much for her community. Putting together a booth and volunteering her time at the Meet the Bobcat tailgating, organizing the Progressive Dinner which helps promote the businesses on the square, volunteering at Oktoberfest and so many more community activities like creating food drives for Grace Bridge, raising goods for Bethlehem’s Place and Grayson Shelter . Her heart is truly giving and so big. She helps with so much to enrich the community and is a friend to all. Online voting is available at www.LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com/Celina until February 20th!! Please vote and share the Celina Magazine Facebook page to allow your friends and family to vote as well!

Top Docs Dr. John Perriton Chiropractic care can be a game-changer for countless health challenges. Children, teenagers, and adults alike can experience relief from acute injuries and annoyances as well as serious chronic conditions, often circumventing the need to pursue more invasive and expensive options or medications. Here’s just a sampling of the many areas of health that can benefit from chiropractic care: neck pain, headaches, back pain, strengthening the immune system, improving athletic performance, pregnancy and injury prevention/treatment. Dr. John Perriton first realized he wanted to become a chiropractor while in a college class that required observing various health professionals. When a friend chose to shadow a chiropractor, Dr. Perriton tagged along, not knowing his life direction would be set that day. While watching the chiropractor at work, he saw how this doctor cultivated good relationships with his patients. In fact, entire families came to see the chiropractor, and he was able to help them with many different health issues. From then on, Dr. Perriton knew that becoming a chiropractor was the right choice for him. At Prosper Chiropractic, Dr. Perriton strives to treat patients on an individual basis with state-of-the-art techniques, utilizing spinal decompression, flexion/distraction, cold laser for tissue healing, and physical therapy to support long-term healing and wellness. He strongly believes in the importance of getting to know his patients personally to help them move past their pain or physical limitations to accomplish their life goals. He has successfully cultivated an office atmosphere in which patients feel at home in a supportive and family-like environment. His goal is to unleash the power of the nervous system to give healing control back to the body and provide a more conservative route of care. At the same time, he understands that sometimes medication and surgical intervention is necessary, and he always seeks to develop good relationships with other medical professionals to provide the right care for each of his patients. Dr. Perriton graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and completed his doctorate at Parker University. Before coming to Prosper, he worked with a chiropractor in Highland Park specializing in care for athletes at SMU. Additionally, he ran a successful clinic in Allen, and while there, treated many of the basketball and tennis athletes of Collin County Community College. Dr. Perriton is a Certified Sports Chiropractor (CCSP) as well as a licensed acupuncturist. He has been married to his wife Liz for eight years, and they have two rambunctious little boys, Knox(6) and Jace(4) as well as 16 month old twins Tyce and Halle. When he’s not working, Dr. Perriton enjoys serving at his church and participating in a variety of sports.

Top Docs have Top Teams!

At Prosper Family Dentistry, there is no doubt that we have top docs. A quick perusal through our online reviews makes that obvious. Both Dr. Jill and Dr. Cara are experts in their field. Not only do they have outstanding credentials. They each have reputations for being compassionate, thorough, and highly skilled. What you may not know is that we have a top team, and we believe that it is the teamwork between the staff members and doctors that makes Prosper Family Dentistry the best it can possibly be. We achieve our goal of providing excellent, comprehensive family dentistry to every patient only because each person in the office works toward that same goal!

Dentists

Dr. Jill Sentlingar and Dr. Cara Kessler are both graduates of Baylor College of Dentistry (now named Texas A&M College of Dentistry), where they received an unparalleled dental education. After graduation, both have continued to expand their knowledge and skills through targeted advanced education in the areas of TMJ disorder, orthodontics, cosmetic dentistry, dental implants, and sleep disordered breathing. Their comprehensive approach to oral health and how it relates to the whole body makes them stand out among their peers. Patients are often surprised to hear a question that seems unrelated to the mouth, only to find out that Dr. Jill and Dr. Cara have picked up on a health issue through their thorough evaluation of the mouth, teeth, jaws, and gums.

Dental Hygienists

While they perform the task of a professional teeth cleaning gently and thoroughly, they also closely evaluate the lining of the mouth, teeth, gums, and the function of the jaws. Because our hygienists have many years of history with their patients, they are in the perfect position to note any red flags and bring it to the attention of the dentists.

Dental Assistants

Each of our dental assistants is highly skilled and trained in areas outside the realm of typical dental assisting. Over the years of working with Dr. Jill and Dr. Cara, our assistants have received high levels of education in the areas of risk assessment, advanced dental technology, oral surgery, and cosmetic dentistry. Ask any dentist, and she will confirm the truth of this: you can only perform excellent dentistry with an excellent dental assistant!

Business Office Staff

Our business office staff members have an advanced level of knowledge about comprehensive dentistry that makes phone conversations different. They know which questions to ask and understand the answers in a way that provides an immediate assurance and comfort that you will be well cared for in our office. Their great communication with you and the dental staff streamlines the time you spend in our office. They can discern from their time on the phone with you whether you need a quick emergency visit or an hour-long consultation with the dentist. It takes a top-level team with top-performing team members to produce the results our top dentists aim for each and every day!

Dr. Jill’s and Dr. Cara’s passionate pursuit of excellent dentistry and overall health spills over onto each team member. Our dental hygienists do not just clean teeth. They are each highly trained in assessing risk factors for not only dental diseases, but systemic health concerns as well. The genuine relationships they build with their patients helps them catch early warning signs of health changes, often before the patient or his medical doctor are aware of them. 201 N Preston Rd, Suite A | Prosper, Texas 75078

Homefront

Plan the Ultimate Kitchen Upgrade kitchen serves as the heart of most homes, so it’s also one of the first rooms homeowners choose when it’s time to make upgrades. When approaching your kitchen remodel, it’s important to keep your family’s lifestyle at the forefront of your planning to create a space that fits the way you like to live. Get the most livable space and enjoyment out of a kitchen remodel with these tips from the experts at the National Association of the Remodeling Industry:

A

Make purposeful changes.

A desire to bring your kitchen’s style up to date is plenty of motivation for a renovation, but to get maximum benefit from your new space, spend time considering what functional improvements you can make, too. Do you need more cabinets for storage? Is there enough counter space for meal prep? Does the overall layout suit your family’s needs? Even if you chose the original layout and floorplan, chances are good that over time you’ve found a few things you’d change given the chance to do it again.

Consider physical space.

If yours is a family that cooks together, or if guests tend to congregate in the kitchen when you’re entertaining, a renovation is the perfect time to make adjustments that accommodate more bodies in the kitchen. You might want more work zones for multiple cooks, or an island or peninsula set away from the high-traffic zone for guests more interested in snacking and chatting than getting hands-on.

Evaluate your shopping style.

You may be in the habit of doing your grocery shopping to fit your

22 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

available space. However, with a larger refrigerator and more pantry space, your shopping habits could change, allowing you to become a bulk shopper or at least increase the time between shopping trips.

Be realistic about mealtime.

If your family’s activities have everyone eating at different times, you may benefit from a feature like a warming drawer that keeps dinner warm until each family member makes it home for a meal. Think about features that would make the table space more practical, such as task lighting so kids can tackle homework at the table or convenient access to power for laptops.

Choose appliances with care.

It’s easy to get carried away with all of the design elements that go into a kitchen renovation, but at the end of the day, remember the appliances are the true centerpiece of the space. Be sure to leave room in the budget to select the best appliances for your needs so you have all the functions, features and space to make using your new kitchen as enjoyable as possible.

Think into the future.

A kitchen renovation can be a costly venture, so it’s a good idea to project years down the road as you consider your needs. Are there features that would enhance the safety if a baby (that soon will become an inquisitive toddler) joins the family? Are there elderly family members may benefit from a lower or higher workstation down the road? Find more expert tips to inform your renovation planning at RemodelingDoneRight.com.

Ornamental Grasses for the Win! Sometimes, even the most beautiful shrubs can look rather plain, simply plunked down in a flower bed, particularly if placed in front of a stark wall or an unappealing fence. It would be like buying a really attractive piece of furniture and positioning it in a bare room with a nasty, stained wall behind it! Somehow, its beauty is lost in that environment. But just like those shows on HGTV and others demonstrate, a complimentary backdrop and some well-placed accessories can make all the difference, creating a stage upon which your special piece stands out as a star. To take this idea to your flower beds, consider adding ornamental grasses. The right grasses can provide an eye-pleasing backdrop and a buffer between your shrubs and a fence or wall. They can compliment and enhance the shape and color of your plantings, and many can provide attractive greenery long into the winter when there’s little else to attract the eye. I happen to think that shimmering, frost-covered spikes on a crisp winter morning are a truly beautiful sight! So, what should you choose? As always, I’m happy to offer specific, personal advice via e-mail if you send me some details at jimmie@ absolutelybushed.com but let’s start with a few basic ideas...tall grasses can provide the ideal backdrop for flowers and shrubs. Try these: Maiden Grass (Miscanthus sinensis ‘Gracillimus’) This is quite a “large” grass and is a favorite of ours due to its fine, narrow foliage and gracefully round form. Maiden Grass blooms from mid to late fall and grows 4 – 6 feet tall and 4 feet around. I recommend about 48 inches spacing between plants. It grows quite fast and is dense enough to obscure any unattractive fencing behind it. It is also fairly deer-resistant when mature and is quite drought resistant. A very nice addition to berrying plants and evergreens. Porcupine or Zebra Grass (Miscanthus sinensis ‘Strictus’) This is a variegated form of Maiden Grass and grows to about 5 feet tall, 24 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

flowering in September. The gold bands on the foliage create a really interesting streak of color. Like its Maiden cousin, Porcupine is a fast grower and can tolerate sun, partial sun and shade. Looking for smaller ornamental grasses to integrate with your other plants? Try these: Blue Fescue (Festuca ovina glauca Elija-blue) Elija Blue is the bluest of all the blue fescues, and really creates a stunning effect when planted with flowers and small shrubs that produce pink or red blooms. Try planting Elija Blues with dianthus (pinks). Around June, you’ll see tall, flowering spikes rising from the fine-textured clumps that spread approximately 18” – 24”. Pennisetum Little Bunny A cute name for a really cute ornamental grass that grows less than one foot tall! It is ideal to plant in front of perennials, and works well as a ground cover or with dwarf conifers and rock gardens. At our house, Roxanne and I planted Little Bunny in French drains in front of our home. It is rabbit-resistant, sun tolerant, and gives us these beautiful tufted plumes in late summer. The blooms persist into winter but we often harvest and dry them for flower arrangements. If you’d prefer a variegated version, look for its cousin, “Little Honey.” Dwarf Grass (Pennistum Hamelin) This is just about our favorite! Its finely-textured foliage and compact growth made it ideal to plant in front of our own house. We love the flower clusters that appear in summer and fall, earlier than most other varieties. They top out at about 2 – 3 feet at maturity and look great year-round. I hope this has given you some ideas for enhancing the look of your flower beds (and, indeed, much of your landscape) without spending too much of your hard-earned cash!

Question: Jimmie, I have a young dogwood tree that I believe got overspray of Weed Killer on its last spring when I treated my lawn. It got some dark spots on the lower leaves and a few of them eventually fell off. I thought that would be the end of it, but it seemed to be getting worse as the summer progressed. The dark spots are appearing on higher leaves and my entire tree seems to be doing badly. I know it did not get reinfected, because I did not treat my lawn again. Could it be something else and just coincidentally happened shortly after I treated my lawn? If so, what can I do? If not, will my tree be OK after the winter passes and into spring? Do you know of anything I can do to reverse the effects of this on my tree? Jeff J. in Celina Answer: Hi Jeff! If the damage was caused by the lawn spray there is little you can do except wait it out. One thing comes to mind is to feed it a root stimulator in order to give it some help and maybe a plant food (not fertilizer) that will give it a boost. Whatever damage was done is done and cannot be reversed. However, you can increase it chances by TLC and food. Until next time‌Happy Gardening!!

alentine’s Day naturally brings thoughts of hearts, flowers, sweetness and love. Because it also occurs during American Heart Month, it’s a perfect opportunity to start taking care of your own heart and the hearts of loved ones. Part of the charm of the day’s celebrations is in giving family and friends flavorful foods to enjoy from chocolates and candies to other sugary treats. However, the festivities don’t have to be completely focused on unhealthy bites in order to make someone feel special. This year, it can be easy to share in the fun of Valentine’s Day by serving those you love with sweet, seasonal treats. For example, these Frosted Watermelon Cutouts make for ideal snacks for children and adults alike whether it’s an after-school treat or a sweet dessert with just three ingredients, heart-shaped cookie cutters and minimal time spent in the kitchen.

WAYNE BARTLEY

If you’re really looking to impress that special someone, this Watermelon and Chocolate Dessert Board calls for creativity and plenty of tasty morsels like berries, cashews, almonds and dark chocolate. Without any baking or cooking required, simply spread out the ingredients for a platter that’s just as visually appealing as it is appetizing. Both recipes include the benefits of watermelon, which boasts plenty of vitamin C to boost the immune system’s defenses as a cholesterolfree, fat-free and sodium-free food. Plus, watermelon draws its red color from the powerful antioxidant lycopene (12.7 mg per serving), which may help protect cells from damage, and the healthy treat is American Heart Association HeartCheck Certified with just 80 calories per serving, making it the perfect centerpiece for Valentine’s Day recipes.

What to Wear for Valentine’s Day

There’s no doubt about it—Valentine’s Day is coming up! Even if you think it’s a made-up holiday or a for-real celebration of all things love, make some plans! Whether you decide to stay in and get cozy or hit the town, your Stylist has the perfect look. Read on for date night inspiration— whether you’re staying in or going out.

IF YOU’RE GOING OUT

It might take a bit more effort but planning a date night can be so rewarding. No matter what you decide to do, use it as an excuse to put on something pretty—maybe something a little more dressed up than your usual look. And, don’t forget, Valentine’s Day is coming up, so you might want to have a look that’s a bit more romantic on hand. Happiest Hour Meeting friends (or that special someone) at your favorite cocktail lounge? Dress up your denim with a flirty top in a bright cherry red, pink heels and a clutch in the prettiest shade of blush. We love that a top like this can be repurposed and worn with a pencil skirt or your favorite work pants. Curtain Call Attending the theater or a concert? Make sure everything is in perfect harmony when you pair a printed dress with a solid moto—black and white as shown here—or in any color palette that lights up your face. Finish the look with pointy-toed pumps for a dressed-up touch, and a clutch in a pop-y color (which will also look great paired with jeans for a brunch date). The Art of Style When gallery hopping or wandering through your favorite museum, opt for denim paired with feminine favorites. A graceful white top with delicate details is a great place to start—so romantic. Add a shoe embellished with a statement bow for even more girly flair, and just to keep things interesting—a clutch in a wild-but-not-too-wild animal print.

IF YOU’RE STAYING IN

There is no rule that says a date (even a romantic date!) has to include leaving the house. Whether you are just getting to know each other, or have been together awhile, doing something together at home can be really special. But, hold the holey sweats. Ask your Stylist for comfy but stylish pieces so you’ll always be ready to hang at home and look great doing so. Super Style Staying in to watch the big game? Score major points in the style department with a sporty look that’s comfy and just happens to be a style all-star. A pair of leggings with interesting detailing is athleisure done right, especially when paired with a tie-waist top in a cool neutral. Finish the look with sneakers in a fun print, and you’ll be set for game day. No Reservations Feasting on a 5-star meal does not have to mean leaving your house—choose a recipe, invite that special someone over to be your sous chef and cook up a romantic date. Prep the perfect look, starting with a comfy-but-stylish pair of pull-on pants, top with a t-shirt and make sure you have a cute cardi on hand in case it gets chilly. Elevate the whole thing with a pair of metallic sneakers, and you are serving up your finest at-home look. Set the Scene Ah, movie night, the classic at-home date. What could be more perfect than curling up on the couch with your favorite action, romance or comedy films along with your favorite person? Keep it fashionable when you pop on a pair of on-trend camo leggings topped with a colorful button-up shirt and denim jacket—and add a sporty-casual touch with a cool pair of kicks. Pop the corn, melt the butter and settle in for the ultimate night at home. Article compliments of Stitch Fix. Ready for date night? Tell your Stylist what your plans are. Travel

Mardi Gras in New Orleans New Orleans has everything you need for a quick getaway in February. From restaurants to tours, bars and activities, there is plenty to do this month…but probably the most notable attraction this month in the Crescent City is MARDI GRAS DAY!! No one does Carnival like New Orleans. Beginning on January 6th (Twelfth Night), the city is obsessed with eating, costuming, bead-tossing and parading. A month or so of parties named for just one day…Mardi Gras, otherwise known as Fat Tuesday, the last day before Lent. This year, Mardi Gras Day falls on February 25th. The celebration dates all the way back to 1699 when Louisiana was founded by explorer Pierre Le Moyne D’Iberville and the city hasn’t stopped partying since. Mardi Gras Day marks the final day of Carnival Season. Always the day before Ash Wednesday, Fat Tuesday is a one of a kind experience that embodies the New Orleans culture. Zulu, one of the most-loved parading krewes, is the first parade of the day and they are known for their highly sought-after coconuts – or “golden nuggets”. Following Zulu is Rex, one of the oldest parading krewes. The leader “Rex” acts as the king of all of Carnival. This krewe started the tradition of purple, green and gold, the official colors of Mardi Gras and a “throw” from their float is one of the most coveted. Like most everything else in New Orleans, February weather can be unpredictable. Hot, cold, rainy, dry…layers will be your best friend. Best practice is to keep a light jacket that can be easily stowed away or tied around your waist in case the weather turns. Also a must is to wear comfortable shoes that you won’t mind getting a little dirty. You will find most people wearing festive yellow, green and purple

30 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

clothing, and many will take advantage of the opportunity to get into costume! Whatever you decide to wear, just make sure you grab a king cake and a pound or two of crawfish, because they go hand in hand with Mardi Gras! A few favorite places we found to stay in New Orleans…the Royal Sonesta is party-centric and Bourbon Street’s swankiest hotel. Request a balcony room to hear the live jazz music and watch the eclectic parades of people that go by at all hours! Or try a coveted Bourbon balcony room at the Sheraton – located on the site of the historic Old French Opera. Today’s young opera singers often perform in the lobby bar if you want a different kind of entertainment. Or, if you want to escape the revelry and actually get some sleep, try the Saint – a sleek hotel located on the board of the French Quarter and the Central Business District. It boasts a roof-top bar with expansive city views and the sexy Burgundy Bar with live music. Wherever you decide to stay, walking or biking will be your best bet for getting around. While anytime throughout the Mardi Gras season is fun to be in New Orleans…the biggest celebrations and the larger krewes (parades) begin to roll the Wednesday before Fat Tuesday. And in case you didn’t already know it, Mardi Gras is a FREE EVENT! No tickets are needed to view the parades. However, balls are invitation only or ticketed. Truly a citywide celebration, you’ll find everything from quirky, satirical floats to the North Side Skull and Bones Gang! There’s truly something for everyone!
