From the Desk of Rick DeMasters As I look over the January calendar, a quote from Nathaniel Hawthorne comes to mind that says, “Time flies over us, but leaves its shadow behind.” It seems like it was just yesterday that we watched students entering our campuses for the 2017-2018 school year, but in a blink of an eye, we find ourselves welcoming in a new year. Over the past few months, we have watched our students grow academically through their involvement in extracurriculars such as academic contests, athletics, and a variety of theatrical and musical productions and

competitions. We’ve also watched our 2018 Senior Class progress closer to the end of their high school careers as they focus on submitting college applications, awaiting acceptance letters, and seeking those coveted scholarships that will help make their dreams come true. Learning from the “shadows of our past,” Celina ISD Administrators, city leaders, business owners, and community members have joined efforts to evaluate our current facilities and to discuss what the future outlook holds for our district. Discussions have centered around school organization as it pertains to campus sizes, feeder patterns, land acquisitions, and opportunities for partnering with the City of Celina. Focus was also

concentrated on the future of nonacademic facilities to include transportation, technology, CTE programs, athletic facilities, maintenance, and security. Throughout our committee meetings, it was evident that we are blessed to live and work with community members that are committed to putting the best interest of our students as their highest priority. We also are very fortunate to have available resources accessible through neighboring districts that have first-hand knowledge of the trials and tribulations associated with rapid growth and have readily shared their experiences, both the good and the bad with our committee members. Their experiences frame a more realistic picture of what the future holds for our community and to make preparations for the possible challenges that may come our way. During the Celina ISD School Board meeting scheduled for January 15, 2018, Mr. Bill Hemby, Assistant Superintendent of Maintenance and Operations will be presenting a detailed review of existing district facilities and a master plan that addresses future needs to include a timeline for the construction of additional facilities. Committee members met numerous times over the past few months reviewing present facilities and prioritizing the need for additional facilities. Upon approval from board members, committee members will start to work on a bond referendum that will provide support to facilitate our rapidly growing population. It is also not surprising that as committee members began to design a plan for the future of our district, it was emotional for those members that not only were born and raised here, but for those that moved to Celina because of the traditions and values that make our city and district unique. We have had front row seats to districts that have exploded in size over the last ten years, adding multiple campuses, mascots, and colors into the mix. Our committee members have taken that into account and have focused their efforts to provide our students with academic and nonacademic facilities that will withstand rapid growth, while at the same time continue the Bobcat legacy for many more years to come. As our landscape begins to take on the changes that come with growth, our city and district leaders are working together and have built a strong foundation that will support the future of our community, while keeping its integrity and values at the forefront. The shadows left behind are not forgotten, but will guide us through the challenges we will face in the future as we travel this ever-changing path called growth.

Imagine, you are in the middle of your work day and your child’s orthodontic appointment is in thirty minutes. Instead of leaving work early to drive across town so you can pick your child up from school and take them to their appointment, you were able to stay at work while your child was able to make their orthodontic appointment. Well, you can if your child is a patient at Bietsch Orthodontics. Dr. Bietsch recently built a thirty-six-foot custom mobile orthodontic office for his patients. A mobile orthodontic office that currently goes to ALL Celina and Prosper schools every six weeks to provide his patients with their orthodontic adjustment appointments.

Dr. Tom Bietsch Bietsch Orthodontics 221 N. Preston, Suite A Prosper, Texas 75078 972-347-2222 prosperorthodontists.com

Dr. Bietsch’s “Bietsch Brace Bus” has everyone talking and for good reason. Parents couldn’t be happier with the ease of one less appointment that they have to manage into their already busy schedule. Parents receive a video update of their child and Dr. Bietsch at the time of their appointment that explains how their child’s orthodontic treatment is progressing, if there was a change in a wire that may cause soreness later in the day, how their child is doing on their oral hygiene and what they can expect for their child’s next orthodontic appointment. Parents win here at Bietsch Orthodontics because we bring orthodontics to the schools, so they do not have to miss any work. Students win as well because they are out of class much less time and do not have to miss that after school practice or game because they needed to go to their orthodontic appointment. Dr. Bietsch sees how demanding parent’s schedules are and even more with multiple children, that is why he has created the mobile brace bus; a service that makes another doctor appointment for your child and you that much easier. Dr. Bietsch travels with most of his team too. At all mobile bus appointments, your child will be accompanied by Dr. Bietsch, his treatment coordinator, scheduling coordinator and his three-chair side ortho assistants. Long appointments such as getting braces put on or taken off will be done in the primary office at Bietsch Orthodontics, but all adjustment appointments can be accommodated at your child’s school. Dr. Bietsch has treated over 8,000 patients in his eighteen-year career as an orthodontist. The convenience of Dr. Bietsch’s mobile bus, combined with his eighteen years of experience, sets his practice apart from any other orthodontic office in Texas. His unbelievable care for each patient and ability to create perfection within your child’s smile is why so many parents and patients love going to Bietsch Orthodontics.

1 20 Chiropractic care can be a game-changer for countless health challenges. Children, teenagers, and adults alike can experience relief from acute injuries and annoyances as well as serious chronic conditions, often circumventing the need to pursue more invasive and expensive options or medications. Here’s just a sampling of the many areas of health that can benefit from chiropractic care: Neck Pain | Headaches | Back pain | Strengthening the immune system Improving athletic performance | Pregnancy | Children (ear infections, colic, scoliosis, etc.) Injury prevention and treatment Dr. Perriton first realized he wanted to become a chiropractor while in a college class that required observing various health professionals. When a friend chose to shadow a chiropractor, Dr. Perriton tagged along, not knowing his life direction would be set that day. While watching the chiropractor at work, Dr. Perriton saw how this doctor cultivated good relationships with his patients. In fact, entire families came to see the chiropractor, and he was able to help them with many different health issues. From then on, Dr. Perriton knew that becoming a chiropractor was the right choice for him. At Prosper Chiropractic, Dr. Perriton strives to treat patients on an individual basis with state-of-the-art techniques, utilizing spinal decompression, flexion/distraction, cold laser for tissue healing, and physical therapy to support long-term healing and wellness. He strongly believes in the importance of getting to know his patients personally to help them move past their pain or physical limitations to accomplish their life goals. He has successfully cultivated an office atmosphere in which patients feel at home in a supportive and family-like environment. His goal is to unleash the power of the nervous system to give healing control back to the body and provide a more conservative route of care. At the same time, he understands that sometimes medication and surgical intervention is necessary, and he always seeks to develop good relationships with other medical professionals to provide the right care for each of his patients. Dr. Perriton graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and completed his doctorate at Parker University. Before coming to Prosper, he worked with a chiropractor in Highland Park specializing in care for athletes at SMU. Additionally, he ran a successful clinic in Allen, and while there, treated many of the basketball and tennis athletes of Collin County Community College. Dr. Perriton is also a licensed acupuncturist and is currently pursuing a chiropractic sports practitioner certification.

Dr. Veronica Mueller, a Texas-educated dentist, opened her private practice in July of 2017. The daughter of a teacher and a career military officer, she grew up in multiple states and countries, but returned to her family’s home state of Texas as soon as she could. Veronica moved to Dallas to attend Southern Methodist University, completing a Bachelors of Science in Biology. She then moved to Houston to attend The University of Texas School of Dentistry, earning her Doctor of Dental Surgery. While living in the Houston Medical Center, Veronica took the opportunity to expand her repertoire by learning from some of the greatest minds in medicine. Upon completing her Doctor of Dental Surgery, Veronica practiced her profession in different settings, gaining knowledge of all types of dentistry. After gaining professional experience, Veronica and her husband, John, chose Prosper as the ideal place to put down roots. When drawing the plans for Gentle Creek Dental, Dr. Mueller knew she wanted to utilize the best equipment and newest technology. Before opening her office, she attended many trainings and C.E. in order to decide on the best equipment and to make sure she was up to date on all the latest technology and techniques. Digital radiography was a must have for her practice. This technology takes the fastest x-rays with the least amount of radiation. And not only are all her x-rays digital, so are the charting and files, eliminating most paperwork. Along with a hand-held X-Ray system, they also use intra oral pictures to help in the diagnosing for your treatment plan. Dr. Mueller is very proud to use digital scanning. Not only is it a great time saver for the patients, it’s pretty cool too. When needing a dental appliance (crown, bridge, retainer etc.) that must be fabricated in the lab, your teeth are scanned instead of using the goopy, oldschool dental impressions. After the scan is complete, you can see the 3D image on the computer screen. It can be rotated, zoomed and much more. And since the files are digital, they can be effortlessly sent to the lab, saving time and eliminating steps that could lead to distortions. This is Dr. Mueller’s favorite tech toy. As technology advances, many more additions may be implemented. Dr. Mueller’s core belief is that lifelong learning is critical to providing excellent care and optimal health. She is proud to be the 3rd generation of dentists in her family. Dedicated to creating a dental practice focused on the needs of the people she serves, she sums up her objective quite simply with saying, “My goal is to have a dental practice that offers everything that I want as a patient.”

18

She invites you to stop by her offices, take the grand tour, and visit with the Gentle Creek Dental Family. They are open Tuesday through Friday, with Saturday hours by appointment.

As a Prosper resident, Dr. Stephans is Prosper’s longest serving chiropractor. He has been serving the community of Prosper and surrounding areas since 2010. Functional Health Centers is conveniently located in downtown Prosper. Dr. Stephans and his wife, Angie, have two daughters, Sophie (4) and Rylee (2). At Functional Health Centers, they take a unique approach to healthcare in that they look at the underlying cause of the issue, as opposed to looking at just the symptoms the way traditional healthcare does. With all of the recent changes in healthcare, Dr. Stephans began noticing that patient care was suffering and becoming unaffordable. With that conclusion, he decided to make a change in their office – make healthcare affordable and allow patients to receive the care they need. The result? Happier and healthier patients! GROWING Celina with Jimmie Gibson Jr.

Ten New Year’s Resolutions for Your Yard Before presenting my Top 10 List of New Year’s resolutions to improve your yard, let me anticipate an objection to New Year’s resolutions -- and answer it. New Year’s resolutions have acquired something of a bad reputation. How could they not, since making New Year’s resolutions almost invariably leads to breaking them? But in the case of landscaping and gardening enthusiasts, I believe a judicious leniency needs to be shown toward such backsliding on New Year’s resolutions. For even breaking all of the entries on my Top 10 list of New Year’s resolutions would serve a useful purpose. How can I possibly make such a claim? Has all that holiday eggnog clouded my judgment? Not at all. Think about it: resolving to undertake improvements to the yard in spring while still in the dead of winter is sufficient, in and of itself, to dispel the winter blues -- regardless of whether or not you follow through on your intentions. The planning itself entailed in New Year’s resolutions is highly therapeutic. There’s no denying that successfully dispelling the winter blues should be a high priority on the winter agenda of landscaping and gardening enthusiasts. We’re not like other people. Holiday parties and looking forward to the Super Bowl may placate some folks until spring returns, but not us. We feel a sense of utter deprivation, because the ice and the cold have robbed us of much that we enjoy about our yards. Short of taking back

our yards from Old Man Winter (which we haven’t figured out how to do yet), the only way we can dispel the winter blues is to plan for better times to come, as we dream about do-it-yourself landscape design projects or finally hiring that Pro to come in and do it all for the spring. That’s where New Year’s resolutions come in. Seed companies understand the planning hysteria that grips even lukewarm plant-lovers during winter’s icy reign. They send out their enticing seed catalogs precisely when we’re so desperate for outdoor vegetation to return that we’ll buy seeds for all sorts of plants -- plants for which we perhaps don’t even have any growing space to spare. We may end up never even planting half the seeds we buy. But it doesn’t matter: the seeds of hope have been sown in our hearts, hope that spring is on the horizon. So, this is one case in which making New Year’s resolutions -- even if we later break them -- cannot be considered merely the idle musings of the will power-challenged. Making such New Year’s resolutions is good for the psyche; keeping them is just icing on the cake. Not that I’m against your keeping your New Year’s resolutions for landscaping, mind you. As much as the mere making of New Year’s resolutions to undertake home landscape design projects helps to get you through the winter, it is the keeping of those New Year’s resolutions that will improve your quality of life for the rest of the year. In fact, it is my hope that landscaping novices regard these ten New Year’s resolutions as a call to action. And to ensure that your action is a well-informed one. But without further ado, here are my Top 10 New Year’s resolutions for your yard. Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions for Landscaping I will build a patio or deck (they’re easier to build than you think).

I will install a water feature (it can be cheaper than you think). I will have pruning work done on any trees that present a hazard. I will define my landscape design tastes and implement them.

Paint & Body

I will grow some plants that will enhance my fall landscape design. I will provide maximum visual interest for the winter season. I will stop complaining about watering and do something to reduce water usage. I will stop complaining about mowing the lawn and do something to reduce lawn care needs. I will stop complaining about garden pests and take preventive measures against them. I will fully enjoy my yard, rather than being a slave to its upkeep. I will “stop to smell the roses.” In order to “stop to smell the roses,” you must begin to take an interest in the background information about your plants. That will allow you to take more joy in your landscaping. Some plants have interesting stories behind them: how they’ve been used historically and the significance they’ve had in the cultures of the world. You can access a lot of this information in minutes by doing a quick Internet search. Once you have this background information on your plants, it will change your perception of them. As you walk by them in your yard every day, they’ll seem more like “friends” who have a story to tell and less like objects upon which chores must be performed. Perhaps the most precious time to “stop and smell the roses” is spring, when Mother Nature shakes off the gloomy cobwebs of the winter season and runs barefoot through the re-discovered grass. Yes, enjoying the outdoors in spring means taking time away from other plans, so that you can enjoy a “silent spring.” You may even have to renege on one of your other landscaping New Year’s resolutions in order to remain true to this one, and you may experience some guilt over indulging yourself with such laziness. Dissolution and resolution don’t usually coincide; but here, they do. And that’s part of the beauty of this final resolution! Until next time…Happy Gardening!! -Jimmie
