4th Annual Celina ISD Back-To-School Registration Fair As we all know, back to school time is filled with school supply shopping and numerous forms to either fill out and/or update. To get you started on the right path, the following information will help you sail through the registration process whether you are new to Celina ISD or a returning student. For New Students to Our District: Registration information can be found on the Celina ISD website at www.celinaisd. com. Click on the Parent tab and scroll to Documents and Forms. Information pertaining to registration procedures can be located under this tab and also a few of the documents that are required for enrollment. For new students, you have two options in regard to the registration forms. (1) You can print the forms at home, fill them out and bring them with you to the registration fair on August 1st, or (2) Forms will be available for you to fill out at the fair if you are not able to print these out prior to August 1st. The district will also need copies of your child’s birth certificate, shot records, and if applicable withdrawal forms, last report card, transcript and test scores from your previous school district. For Prekindergarten and Kindergarten students that attended the PreRegistration Fair: For those of you that attended the Pre-Registration Fair held in April, you do not have to fill out registration forms since those were already submitted, but you will have to supply what is listed below under “For All Students.” There are forms that were not available for you to fill out in April but must be submitted for your registration to be complete. Copies of these forms will be available for you to fill out at the fair. If you did not attend the Pre-Registration Fair, you will need to visit www.celinaisd.com and follow the information listed above for new students.
6 | July 2019 WeAreCELINA.com
For Returning Students to Our District: Parent Portal will open on July 25th for our returning students. Step by step instructions will be available in the “Need Documents” section of the login page. A green checkmark will appear in each section as you complete the required forms. There are many forms to complete and we highly recommend that you take this opportunity to complete the online portion before the registration fair in order to avoid a lengthy registration process. Please be sure to print out the confirmation page or screen shot the information to your phone, so that our district personnel can verify that you have completed all online registration forms. Also, our secondary campuses have added forms that are campus specific and will be located in a separate section on Parent Portal. These will also need to be completed prior to the registration fair. If you experience issues with Parent Portal, we will have technology assistance on hand at the fair to help you with your account. dding more fruits and vegetables is one of the simplest ways to make at-home meals healthier for your family. Focusing your plate on more of the good stuff – vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, plant-based proteins, lean animal proteins and fish – can help you cut back on the not-so-good stuff, including refined carbohydrates,

added sugars, processed meats, sodium and saturated and trans fats, according to the American Heart Association. While some may think meat makes the meal and it can be part of an overall healthy eating pattern, a survey from Aramark, the largest U.S. based food service company, found many people want to ease up on meat consumption, and 2 out of 3 want to eat more fruits and vegetables. The company made sweeping changes to incorporate more plants into its
menus, resulting in meals with fewer calories, less saturated fat and reduced sodium. Punching up the plants on your plate can lead to better nutrition in your house, too. Try putting vegetables and fruits centerstage with these heart-healthy salads. To help encourage healthier communities, the American Heart Association and Aramark have made it simple for you to learn better nutrition and lifestyle habits and to share that information. Make the Most of Seasonal Fruits and Veggies For many people, warmer weather means more time outdoors and food cooked on the grill. To help make your meals more nutritious, consider these ideas to choose, store and enjoy warmweather fruits and veggies:
Corn Straight from the cob, sweet corn is packed with fiber and antioxidants and can be grilled, boiled or even microwaved. Try tossing it
with a small amount of light mayonnaise, lime juice, smoked paprika and cayenne pepper for a simple version of Mexican Street Corn.
Cucumbers Prep is a breeze with cucumbers, which can be eaten raw with or without the peel. For a no-fuss salad, toss together cucumbers, onion and fresh dill then add a dash of sugar, salt and pepper plus a splash of cider vinegar.
Tomatoes Full of nutrients, including vitamins A and C and the antioxidant lycopene, tomatoes are a popular option for seasonal dishes. Store them stem-up on the counter, rather than in the fridge, to prevent bruising and enhance the flavor. For more ways to introduce fruits and veggies to fresh, seasonal meals, visit Aramark’s wellness blog atfyp365.com.

How Planting Trees and Shrubs Benefits the Celina Community
backgrounds, or soften, complement or enhance architecture. Trees bring natural elements and wildlife habitats into urban surroundings; all of which increase the quality of life for residents of the community.
Most trees and shrubs in communities are planted to provide beauty or shade. These are two excellent reasons for their use. Woody type plants also serve many other purposes, and it often is helpful to consider these other functions when selecting a tree or shrub for the landscape. The benefits of trees can be grouped into social, community, environmental and economic categories.
Environmental Benefits: Trees alter the environment in which we live by moderating climate, improving air quality, conserving water and harboring wildlife. Climate control is obtained by moderating the effects of sun, wind, and rain. Radiant energy from the sun is absorbed or deflected by leaves on deciduous trees in the summer and is only filtered by branches of deciduous trees in winter. We are cooler when we stand in the shade of trees and are not exposed to direct sunlight.
Social Benefits: We like trees around us because they make life more pleasant. Most of us respond to the presence of trees beyond simply observing their beauty. We feel serene, peaceful, restful and tranquil in a grove of trees. We feel “at home” there. Hospital patients have been shown to recover from surgery more quickly when their hospital room offered a view of trees. The strong ties of people and trees are most evident in the resistance of community residents to removing trees to widen streets. Or we note the heroic efforts of individuals and organizations to save particularly large or historic trees in a community. The stature, strength, and endurance of trees give them a cathedral-like quality. Because of the potential for long life, trees are frequently planted as living memorials. We often become personally attached to trees that we, or those we love, have planted. Community Benefits: Even though trees may be private property, their size often makes them part of the community as well. Since trees occupy considerable space, planning is required if both you and your neighbors are to benefit. With proper selection and maintenance, trees can enhance and function on one property without infringing upon the rights and privileges of neighbors. City trees often serve several architectural and engineering functions. They provide privacy, emphasize views or screen out objectionable views. They reduce glare and reflection. They direct pedestrian traffic. They provide 14 | July 2019 WeAreCELINA.com
In winter, we value the sun’s radiant energy; and because of this, we should plant only small or deciduous trees on the south side of homes. Wind speed and trees can affect direction. The more compact the foliage on the tree or group of trees, the greater the influence of the windbreak. The downward fall of rain, sleet and hail is initially absorbed or deflected by trees and this provides some protection for people, pets and buildings. Trees intercept waters, store some of it, and reduce storm run-off and the possibility of flooding. Dew and frost are less common under trees because less radiant energy is released from the soil in those areas at night. Temperature in the vicinity of trees is cooler than that away from trees. The larger the tree, the greater the cooling. By using trees in the cities, we are able to moderate the heat island effect caused by pavement and buildings in commercial areas. Air quality can be improved through the use of trees, shrubs and turf. Leaves filter the air we breathe by removing dust and other particulates. Rain washes the pollutants to the ground. Leaves absorb carbon dioxide from the air to form carbohydrates that are used in the plant’s structure and function. In this process, leaves also absorb other air pollutants such as ozone, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide, and give off oxygen. By planting trees and shrubs, we return to a more natural and less artificial environment. Birds and other wildlife are attracted to the area. The
natural cycles of plant growth, reproduction and decomposition are again present, both above and below ground. Natural harmony is restored to the urban environment. Economic Benefits: Property values of landscaped homes are 5-20% higher than those of non-landscaped homes. Individual trees and shrubs have value, but the variability of species, size, condition and function makes determining their economic value quite difficult. The economic benefits of trees can be both direct and indirect. Direct economic benefits are usually associated with energy costs. Air conditioning costs are lower in a tree-shaded home. Heating costs are reduced when a home has a windbreak. Trees increase in value from the time they are planted until they mature. Trees are a wise investment of funds since landscaped homes are more valuable than non-landscaped homes. The savings in energy costs and the increase in property value directly benefit each homeowner. The indirect economic benefits of trees are even greater. These are available to the community or region. Lowered electricity bills are paid by customers when power companies are able to use less water in their cooling towers, build fewer new facilities to meet peak demands, use reduced amounts of fossil fuel in their furnaces and need fewer measures to control air pollution. Trees Require an Investment. Trees provide numerous aesthetic and economic benefits but also incur some costs. You need to be aware that an investment is required for your trees to provide the benefits that you desire. The biggest cost of trees and shrubs occurs when they are purchased and planted. Initial care almost always includes some watering. Leaf, branch and whole tree removal and disposal can be expensive. To function well in the landscape, trees require maintenance. Much can be done by the informed homeowner. Corrective pruning and mulching will give trees a good start. I apologize for not publishing all your questions I have been getting. It’s our busiest time of year and simply have not had sufficient time to do so. The good news is you’re all getting personal replies from me (although it may 2:00am when you get them!)
