3 Fun, Easy Ways to Keep Kids Learning During Summer With school out, summertime brings long, carefree days of play and fun. It can be easy to forget how much children learn through play, but they have a natural sense of curiosity. With a little thought and a few supplies, summer is a perfect opportunity to revitalize their innate love of learning that may be a bit squashed after a year of academic pressures, tests, and schedules. “At this time of year, we often hear families express concern about children losing academic skills during summer break,” said Sue-Ann Lively from KinderCare’s education team. “The pressure to add academic learning to summer can lead to increased anxiety, which isn’t helpful for parents or children. Children retain what they learned best when they’re engaged and interested in what they’re doing. As we head into summer, think about the skills your child learned during the school year and how you could incorporate those skills into activities your child enjoys doing.” Consider these three tips to help your family incorporate learning classroom concepts in summer fun and nurture your children’s love of learning through real-life applications.

6 | Celina WeAreCelina.com

Build on Classroom Skills Practicing writing may not be at the top of your children’s summer activities lists. However, writing might be more appealing if it led to something fun, like a card or letter from a relative or friend. By encouraging your children to write to pen pals, like friends or family members, they will not only practice their literacy skills by writing letters and reading replies, but also work on important executive function skills by learning to manage anticipation while waiting for a response. Even children who are too young to write can participate by drawing pictures and dictating the captions to family members. Go Outside A walk around the neighborhood can turn into an opportunity to build STEM skills by observing changes over time. As you and your children walk, ask questions, make predictions, and discuss what you see. This way, you’ll be forming hypotheses and analyzing your results, just like scientists. Cooking provides a variety of opportunities to work on math skills. For younger children, that could mean getting two carrots and one apple for a recipe. For children who are learning fractions and multiplication, that might mean figuring out how much of an ingredient to add, such as “If the recipe calls for 1/2 cup of flour and we’re doubling the recipe, how much flour do we need?” Board games are another opportunity to build academic skills, like math and literacy; executive function skills, like waiting for their turn; and social skills, such as being a gracious winner. Additionally, read with your children daily and help them find opportunities to practice reading skills, such as reading signs aloud at the park or reading books out loud to other family members. Remodel with Universal Design in Mind Local code ensures new construction homes and renovation projects reflect the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Universal design, on the other hand, does more than make living spaces more accessible for those with disabilities. It expands on regulations to create more userfriendly spaces regardless of abilities, resulting in more enjoyable, functional design. Often, when people think of universal design, they’re thinking of design that reflects the needs of seniors who wish to age in place. That’s not always the case; universal design can also benefit families with special needs or simply serve as a smart investment for the future. Principles of Universal Design To better understand universal design and how it might apply to your project, consider how the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) describes the seven principles of universal design: Equitable use: The design is useful for people with diverse abilities. Flexibility: A wide range of individual preferences and abilities are accommodated. Simple and intuitive: The design is easy to understand regardless of the user’s experience, knowledge, language skills or current concentration level. Perceptible information: Any necessary information is effectively communicated to the user.

8 | Celina WeAreCelina.com

Tolerance for error: Recognizing the possibility of accidents, the design minimizes potential hazards. Low physical effort: The design can be used efficiently and comfortably and with minimal fatigue. Size and space: An appropriate size and space is provided and isn’t affected by the user’s body size, posture, or mobility. Trends in Universal Design The line between practical universal design and convenience features that drive up a room’s “cool factor” is growing increasingly blurry, according to Gary Grabowski, owner of Greater Home Services and a NARI Universal Design Certified Professional (UDCP). One example is curbless showers, which eliminates a wheelchair barrier with an appealing design element. In fact, bathrooms are among the highest demand remodeling projects Grabowski sees, especially for people whose mobility is affected, either personally or for a loved one who visits the home. Other examples of on-trend universal design in the bathroom are floating, wall-hung vanities. Grabowski said the open floor space that design creates is enticing whether you need to be able to roll a wheelchair under it or not. Other on-trend upgrades, such as motion-activated fixtures like fans, faucets and touch controls for showers, may feel like a bit of luxury in the short-term but could serve an accessibility role down the road. In other parts of the house, luxury vinyl plank flooring continues to grow in popularity. Not only is it practical and easy to clean, it’s appealing from a design standpoint and also offers a barrierfree advantage.

Local Expertise Innovative Approach Real Integrity STACY CATE

Getting Started with Universal Design Because most homeowners only explore universal design when there’s a specific need, the world of options is largely unknown. That’s why Grabowski recommends enlisting the help of a UDCP. “Knowing universal design and the features that enhance accessibility for all kinds of scenarios, I can suggest ideas that people have never thought of to make a living space easier to use,” he said. Grabowski also suggests starting at least a year out so you can make plans from a big picture perspective, including ancillary projects that could make your project even more successful. Want to Know the Latest Trend in Backyard Renovation? It is official...we live in a world of technology at our fingertips! Our cars, homes, phones, tablets, online shopping, chip card readers, smart this and smart that!! So smart that we have gradually changed our lifestyles to accommodate the technology. One recent study showed that families now spend more time watching, listening, or texting each other from all these devices than they do actually spending time and speaking to each other! We have seen a very powerful new trend in our industry taking shape over the past few years, and we now have entire division dedicated full time to try and keep up with the demand! Well all that being said, it seems that parents are doing their absolute best now to reverse that trend and incorporate the latest trend in outdoor renovation. Residential Sports Construction is now being considered into their backyard designs more than a swimming pool or outdoor living area. You can now easily incorporate a half basketball court, putting green and custom batting cage for you and your kids for less than half the cost of a pool! Once installed, there is little to no maintenance involved and provides year-round use. Fun, family fitness is the new trend. Parents love the fact they can get the kids out of their rooms or off the couch, put down that video game and get back to having quality fun family time. Many are encouraging their youth sports teams to now get that extra practice in before the next big game or tournament! Their backyard has become “the cool” place for the neighbors’ kids to hang out at. ATHLETIC COURTS Technology has advanced in these backyard courts also. The safest surfaces have now been incorporated into the latest available court tiles that actually have scientific studies proving less youth injuries than your traditional basketball courts we grew up playing on. They can also be fully customized to play a variety of sports on the same court based on available installation options. Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis, Pickle ball, Court Hockey, Futsal for the soccer enthusiast, Hopscotch, Four Square and even Shuffleboard! So, there is something available for everyone…from small children to grandparents! PUTTING GREENS Avid golfer? This is another big trend in outdoor renovation…people installing custom putting greens in their backyards! And not just any putting greens, these are just like the ones you see on the best golf courses around. Undulating greens with different height custom fringe around the edges. Want to add 20 feet away spot to chip on to your green? Done. Want 10 different angles and holes installed into your putting green? Done. Not only do you no longer have to maintain that grass area in the backyard, but they require no water, so they are virtually maintenance free! Again, something the entire family can enjoy. BATTING CAGES Youth baseball and softball seasons are here, and all the pros are in deep into their seasons. This is another sports construction element that we are seeing implemented into residential backyards. That neglected side yard, or that long stretch across the backyard people get tired of mowing or 10 | Celina WeAreCelina.com

paying to maintain, are both perfect for custom batting cages. They have come a long way and can now be constructed with custom thick piping type poles and thick custom netting to contain the all the balls being hit. The higher end ones will stand up to the straight-line winds and storms we frequently get verses the less expensive prefab ones on the market from the big box stores. We are now seeing custom colored artificial turf installed inside these that designates the raised pitching mound area with state-of-the-art pitching machines, fully marked batters’ boxes, even a separate interior turf section with drop down netting that also allows someone to go in and drive golf balls inside it! So, your select or recreational baseball or softball youth participant can actually train like the pros at home! All these trends are leading to fun family fitness once again. And if you really think about it, we only get so much time with our kids before they quickly grow up and leave the nest. So, the next time you see your children on that video game, iPad, phone or sending you a text from 10 feet away.... this is something to think about! Question: Jimmie, when should I exactly be feeding my landscaping? I have heard many different answers from the people at Home Depot, Lowes, and local nurseries. They also can’t seem to tell me what to feed with or how often. I have been reading your column for years and I cannot tell you how much I have learned from you. I hope to run into one day around Prosper and personally thank you myself! I know you are a busy guy so whenever you get around to it, please let me know your thoughts. Thank you again! – Melissa M. in Prosper Answer: Hi Melissa, thank you for the kind words and I hope we run into to each other sometime so I can thank you for reading! Okay, down to your question. Best time to feed your landscaping is early spring and again in early fall. Our plants are constantly taking nutrients from the soil so they can grow, bloom and generally be healthy and thrive. Therefore, we must put those nutrients back into the soil or our soil will become depleted, and our plants will gradually decline. Best to use a granular tree and shrub food available at most higher end nurseries that slowly releases Nitrogen into the soil over time. If you have Acidic plants, then they need to be fed Acid type food. You can simply save a gallon milk jug, pour a cup of vinegar into it, and fill rest of way with water. You then pour around the root system of plants…and another excellent source for acidic plants are coffee grounds.

Celina - In Good Taste

4 Tips to Master the Grill The end result of perfectly cooked chicken is a mouthwatering meal that smells just as good as it tastes and beckons loved ones to the patio. To achieve that juicy, tender flavor that brings family and friends together, it’s important to keep a few safety and grilling tips in mind. Fire up your grill, season poultry to perfection and serve a safely cooked meal at your next backyard barbecue with this advice from the experts at Perdue Farms. Maximize Your Budget For a flavorful meal without breaking the bank, consider less-expensive cuts of meat like bone-in thighs or drumsticks, or cook a whole chicken that can last for several meals. In addition to the savings at the grocery store, these cuts can also withstand hotter temperatures on the grill for juicy and tender results. Save a Little Time One easy way to maximize your time around the grill while cutting down on prep and mess is using a pre-cut option like Perdue Fresh Cuts Diced Chicken Breast, a perfect solution for kebabs. Recipe ready in an easy-peel package, the chickens are hatched and harvested in the United States with an all-vegetarian diet and no antibiotics, hormones or steroids. Add Favorite Seasonings Because seasonings can sometimes come off on the grill, try seasoning both before and after grilling for a better-tasting final result. If you’re planning to marinate, be careful to avoid over-marinating as acid-based marinades can start breaking down meat fibers. Remember before and while seasoning raw meat to keep proper safety practices in mind. Wash your hands, cutting boards, knives, scissors, the sink and all work surfaces for 20 seconds with hot, soapy water, and don’t allow raw meat or its juices to touch other foods. 12 | Celina WeAreCelina.com

Trust the Thermometer Once your grill reaches the desired heat, put chicken on the grates with confidence by trusting a meat thermometer to measure doneness. This Easy Kona Pineapple Chicken Kebabs recipe, for example, calls for 10-12 minutes on the grill, but it’s important to check for an internal temperature of 165 F rather than simply relying on recommended cook times. Be sure to serve using a clean platter and utensils, never ones touched by raw meat. Refrigerate any leftover chicken immediately and use within 3-5 days. For more grilling tips, visit perdue.com/how-to/grilling.

EASY KONA PINEAPPLE CHICKEN KEBABS Prep time: 45 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Servings: 4 1 can (6 ounces) pineapple juice 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 lime, zest and juice only

1 tablespoon sugar 1 piece (1 inch) fresh ginger, grated 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1 package Perdue Fresh Cuts Diced Chicken Breast 1/2 fresh pineapple, cut into 16 chunks 1 large red bell pepper, seeded and cut into 16 (1-inch) chunks 4 metal skewers or 8 wooden skewers (12 inches) soaked in water 30 minutes In bowl, whisk pineapple juice, vegetable oil, lime juice and zest, sugar, ginger and red pepper flakes until sugar dissolves. Add diced chicken breast, cover and marinate in refrigerator 30 minutes.

WAYNE BARTLEY

Thread alternating pieces of chicken, pineapple, and red bell pepper onto skewers. Discard remaining marinade. Heat lightly greased grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. Grill kebabs 10-12 minutes, turning every 3-4 minutes until chicken feels firm to touch and a meat thermometer inserted in the center reaches 165 F. Remove kebabs from grill, rest 2-3 minutes and serve. Tip: If using wooden skewers, soak in water 30 minutes to keep skewers from burning on grill. If using metal skewers, remember chicken will cook faster because metal will conduct heat and cook chicken cubes from inside along with grill heat cooking chicken from outside.
