CISD News
From the desk of Rick DeMasters Just a few weeks ago, I congratulated the Celina High School Class of 2019 during their Commencement ceremony and looked into those faces one last time. Faces that displayed excitement and hope for the future. As I looked out into the audience, those same expressions were exhibited on the faces of their teachers, administrators, and last but not least their parents, who proudly watched them take their first steps towards their future. A short time later, our campuses are empty, and you will find my team and I in the midst of preparing for yet another school year. We too, find it hard to believe that we are getting ready to welcome students back to school in a few months, but we are excited about what the future holds for our district and that can be contributed to YOU! For the past several years, we have researched and collected data from a number of organizations and companies to project the future growth of our district. We elicited help from business owners, teachers, administrators, parents, city officials and community members to determine the path and the plan that the district would take over the next several years. That plan included calling for a bond in the amount of $600 million. On election day, over 85% of our community voted in favor of this bond. That victory reflects that our community believes that our students should be provided with top-notch facilities in which to prepare them for what lays ahead. One of the first projects to start will be the wing construction and renovations to Celina Elementary School. Work is scheduled to begin in October with a completion date set for the fall of 2020. We have also been meeting with area developers to address sites for our future elementary and middle school campuses. With 4 new elementary campuses, 2 middle school campuses, renovations to Celina High School, maintenance and bus barn facilities, the district will be “under construction for many years to come. Also, during the month of June, the district will again be cohosting OpportUNITY2019 with Region 10. This two-day educational workshop for teachers and administrators will feature over ninety presentations, giving those in attendance the ability to design their own professional development that caters to their specific goals. It is also a great way to connect with educators across not only the DFW area, but the entire State of Texas. Again, without the support of our Celina ISD faculty, parents and community members our summer plans would have greatly been altered, but your votes reflect not only your commitment to our district, but the value that you place upon our students and their education. You have entrusted these funds to us and we will continue to be good stewards of your tax dollars. We are excited about the future of our district and how this will impact our students. Thank you for believing in our students and giving us the ability to make their dreams come true! GO BOBCATS!

My husband and I are first-time homeowners, and we couldn’t imagine going through the process without our favorite “Debbie from Ebby!” Debbie took what was supposed to be a stressful experience, and filled it with laughter, joy and beautiful memories. Debbie made sure to take on all of the “nitty-gritty” parts, and left us to enjoy the special moments of purchasing a home. She guided us with a gentle hand, but most importantly stood strong to assure we didn’t get taken advantage of. Debbie did what no amount of customer service can -- she genuinely made us feel like family! At the time, my husband and I were working full-time jobs and trying to pack in-between. Debbie understood our tight schedule, and went above and beyond to handle everything herself. From multiple visits to the home to check on progress, to visiting with builders and management to make sure our home was in perfect shape. Debbie’s expertise was clear and her professionalism was top-notch. My favorite part about Debbie is that her service doesn’t stop once the sale goes through. Debbie came to check on us multiple times afterward and came bearing heart-filled gifts to make our move easier. She even swung by on moving day to bring our family a beautiful lunch and treats so we didn’t have to worry about cooking. This woman is a saint when it comes to the real estate world, and we plan on using her for any future purchases and recommending her to ALL of our family and friends. Even though we’re all settled into our new home, Debbie will always be a close friend to us!

FUSE Workspace’s Growth in Prosper Means Help in Uganda Mike & Tamara Daugherty are all about hospitality. Their company has developed and operates hotels throughout Texas and at their core they are about service. A few years ago, Mike began to think about the convenience of having an office for his company in Prosper, a short commute from his Celina home. That led him to explore the world of coworking. Coworking encompasses a variety of workspaces, including café environments, dedicated desk zones, and private offices, with the number of coworking facilities like WeWork and FUSE having multiplied rapidly the last few years. Coworking has many names, like “flex office” and “shared workspace,” but the term Mike prefers most is “serviced office.” He will tell you at the heart of what they do at FUSE is hospitality and to the FUSE team that means service. Mike believed his companies’ hospitality expertise would fit well with a cowork business venture. After extensive research, he decided Prosper was the place to launch his new cowork brand, FUSE Dynamic Workspace. FUSE opened in June of 2018 in Prosper Town Center, adjacent to Prosper’s well-known restaurants Palio’s, Ernesto’s, and Sonic. The first phase included two floors designed for coworking, dedicated desks, private offices, and conference rooms.
14 | June 2019 WeAreCELINA.com
Mike described the development of his first office building and FUSE as a lot of fun. “In all my hotels we franchised with brands like Hilton & Marriott, each having a specific brand program. Creating the FUSE brand from scratch has been a lot of fun.” To help open the first FUSE, Mike recruited his friend Bridgette Bise as the General Manager. “Bridgette and I worked with several consultants and studied a lot of operators. In the end, we built a really unique business model – one driven by hospitality and community – flavored with a fun and collaborative work environment.” FUSE is a place where members can secure a private office or a great place to cowork without signing a multi-year lease with all the commitments that entails. “Our offices are move-in ready. Members can walk in the door in the morning and have their office set up and ready to go in a matter of minutes”, said Bridgette. The building’s interior, designed by Mike’s wife Tamara, is a case in point. Colorful art, interesting furniture and fixtures, vibrant paint colors, and floor to ceiling windows create a light, bright, and friendly feel. Every office is equipped with a versatile sit-stand desk. Members from a variety of industries often collaborate in the Honeylu’s-operated café area, or at a lunch and learn in the large conference room, or in an exercise class provided by building tenant NexGen Fitness. The company’s philosophy drives everything, noted Daugherty. “Our mission is to help our members ‘Do More.’ Not only in their businesses – but also as individuals: becoming more healthy, serving others, making our community and world a better place – that’s how ‘Do More’ is played out at FUSE.” An example of the ‘Do More’ philosophy is FUSE’s partnership with local ministries like Grace Bridge and MasterCares. Grace Bridge serves families in Celina and the region, and MasterCares built and operates a Christian school and hospital in Uganda. FUSE & NexGen Fitness provided funding to dig a water well in Uganda with MasterCares, and FUSE has committed to build a new well for each new FUSE location. FUSE also gives a portion of funds on behalf of FUSE members to support children in Uganda and locally to families through Grace Bridge. FUSE Brand Manager John Herring believes FUSE’s mission to serve others is critical. “Life is about more than succeeding in business, as important as that is. We believe we’ve been blessed to be a blessing to others. At FUSE, our goal is to provide opportunities outside of work for our members to serve, to support, and to help others in need.” Since its beginning, FUSE has been an active supporter of local ministries and non-profits by providing financial support, as well as office and meeting space. Mark and Cathy Speed, who recently launched the Parents-R-Partners support and education group, hosted their inaugural meeting at FUSE. Mark commented, “FUSE served as the perfect venue for our first event and would be a great venue for other community gatherings.” The Prosper FUSE location is now a bustling community where companies, community organizations, and members share workspace, ideas, and knowledge. The recently opened third floor provided an additional 57 private offices and three conference rooms, including a professionally-equipped podcasting studio. The team at FUSE is now busy on their second location, currently under construction in the vibrant CityCentre development in west Houston. They have plans to open more FUSE locations in Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and Austin. With so many other players in the coworking market, FUSE is carving out a unique niche. Brand Manager John Herring noted, “We’re providing space for people to excel in their businesses and organizations. We’re providing opportunities to do more for people in the community and the world. That’s a worthy investment of time and energy. It’s our passion.” To learn more about FUSE Dynamic Workspace, visit their website at www.fuseworkspace.com.

FAMILY FEATURES
here’s no time like a hot summer picnic to let your patriotic spirit show. These all-American snacks featuring a classic favorite fruit – watermelon – are the perfect solution for nearly any summertime celebration. Watermelon is a patriotic picnic staple for countless reasons, not the least of which is that it’s a beloved treat that many people associate with memories from childhood. However, nostalgia isn’t the only reason adults are just as likely to gravitate toward watermelon at a summer event. Its sweet, cool and refreshing flavor also makes it a favorite for all ages. From a practical standpoint, watermelon is also quite portable, versatile and easy to serve, and with a composition of 92% water, it’s a simple way to sneak in some extra hydration on a hot day. Another benefit is its value; watermelon is one of the best values in the produce section among fruit, and just one watermelon can feed up to three dozen people. Serving watermelon at a party can be as simple as slicing wedges, or you can prepare a dish such as: n
n

A fruit basket, with the rind serving as a colorful bowl to hold the watermelon and other fresh fruits. A charcuterie board with a selection of fruit, cheese and protein for simple snacking. Creamy parfaits, perfect for a summery brunch or alternative to more traditional desserts. A creatively colorful and patriotic “cake” that makes for a tasty centerpiece on the dessert table.

10 Tips For Attracting Hummingbirds
highway.
The soaring aerial acrobats of Cirque de Soleil look like flightless dodo birds compared to the flight of Hummingbirds. Their incredible feats of motion, zipping along at super speed, then stopping to hover and fly backwards, amaze all viewers, especially aviation engineers.
Keep your feeder clean and your sugar solution fresh. Wash the feeder with vinegar and hot water (no detergents) and scrub with a bottlebrush at every refill. Replace the sugar water every two or three days.
Ruby-throated hummingbirds are the most common type seen in Texas. The males start scouting for food sources a few weeks ahead of the migration of the females and can be seen as early as April. The highest populations congregate around gardens and feeders in July.
Keep ants out of the feeder by using an ant guard on the feeder hanger. You can purchase them or make one by drilling a hole in a plastic film canister, sliding the hanger through the hole and filling the canister with water. Ants will not survive the water obstacle and be unable to march down into the feeder, as long as you keep the water level up.
Watching aerial antics of hummers is quite entertaining and I offer these following tips to help you entice these colorful little birds to your yard for your mutual enjoyment.
Hang your feeder in a shady spot or provide shade with an umbrella (a red one would be the best). This keeps the nectar cooler in the heat of the summer.
Plant masses of flowers that hummers love to sip. They particularly like the colors red, pink, and orange. The list below shows some of their favorite flowers that grow well in our area.
Make your own hummingbird nectar. Boil four cups of water and one cup of white sugar for one minute. Do not use honey or red coloring. You may store this solution for up to two weeks in the refrigerator.
Provide perches for the birds using dead branches or planted shrubs that are not too dense. Hummers spend about 80 percent of their time sitting on twigs, branches or clotheslines surveying the area and protecting their food source.
BEST HUMMINGBIRD PLANTS:
Install water feature that drips or mists water. Hummers enjoy bathing and flying through mist, and the sounds of these water features attract their notice. Observing them flying through water vapor is as amusing as watching children play in a sprinkler.
Vines: Crossvine, Honeysuckle, Morning Glory, Trumpet Vines, Jasmine vines
Avoid the use of pesticides in your gardens and yard, both inorganic and organic. Killing garden pests eliminates the small insects hummingbirds eat for their protein source. Hummers are very sensitive to toxic materials, which might be retained on the flowers. Put nectar feeders out in mid-April when the scouts start their migration north, looking for routes that have nearby food sources. They will tell their buddies about your roadside diner for their trip later in the spring. Decorate your feeder with red ribbon or bright orange surveying tape. This would be the equivalent of the neon “Eat Here” sign on the hummer
Shrubs: Abelia, Azaleas, Butterfly Bushes, Firebush, Turk’s Cap, Vitex, and Wiegela
Flowers: Bee balm, Cardinal flower, Columbine, Coral Belles, Impatiens, Pentas, Salvia Question: Jimmie, I have Vinca groundcover in my garden and every summer it seems to die back for some reason. Any thoughts on what’s going on? Thank you, Daphne T. in Celina Answer: Hi Daphne! Your problem sounds like leafrollers. Use a systemic insecticide to treat it. Spray 3 to 4 weeks prior to the time you usually
begin having problems. Since the leafrollers get themselves sequestered within the leaves, only a systemic product can reach them and be effective. Question: Jimmie, is there anything available at all (Pandas, poison, ANYTHING !!!) we can use to stop the spreading of Bamboo adjacent to a water garden? Thanks in advance for your time! Mark E. in Celina Answer: Dear Mark, glyphosate herbicides do some good in controlling bamboo, but they are certainly not the perfect answer. The more top growth that is coated with the spray, the better the control will be. However, these herbicides also kill other foliage on which they are sprayed, so you would have to be very selective. Honestly, the best plan is to just dig it out and keep digging new sprouts until it no longer offers to regrow. If you would like to keep it permanently, you should install a root barrier dug 25 to 30 inches into the ground as a means of keeping it in bounds. Question: Jimmie, what is the best remedy for grasshoppers? Thanks for all your articles, I really enjoy them!

Stephanie S. in Celina Answer: Hi Stephanie! Many general-purpose organic and inorganic insecticides are labeled for use on grasshoppers. One of the most important factors is in your means of applying them. It’s usually best to spray down over the tops of your plants so that the spray will coat the grasshoppers as they try to fly away. Of course, cutting all the tall weeds and grass in proximity to your landscape and garden will also help! Until next time…….Happy gardening!!
