CISD News
From the Desk of Mr. Rick DeMasters Celina ISD Superintendent of Schools I’m reminded of a sign that reads, “Caution! Objects in Calendar Are Closer Than They Appear.” These words could not be more true when I gaze upon the calendars and timelines that cross my desk. From the normal educational timelines to the added construction calendar, creates an element of excitement for not only myself, but for our district as we confidently face the future with new faces and campuses that will lay the foundation to prepare our students for future success. First, and foremost is the attention placed on the success of our students. Celina ISD Teachers and Staff have worked feverishly over the past seven months preparing their students for the STAAR tests that will be taken over the next few months. Attention has also been directed to their physical, social and emotional development, all of which are key components to their success in and out of the classroom setting. For those that know me, understand the love I have for being on a campus and interacting with students and colleagues. Over the past several months, I have been able to spend quality time with the faculty and staff of each of our campuses during Brown Bag Lunch get-togethers. Through these sessions, information has been shared, concerns and/or suggestions have been aired creating an openness between my oice and our classrooms. This transparency is crucial and welcomed, so that we can provide our students and our staff with information and resources needed to help them accomplish their goals. Secondly, CISD School Board of Trustees voted unanimously to hire Principal candidate, Mrs. Nancy Alvarez. We warmly welcome Mrs. Alvarez to our district and to her leadership role as Principal of the new Celina Primary School that will open this fall for PPCD, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students. She comes to us with a great deal of experience in this area and has already infused herself into her new community.

We look forward to the excitement that she will bring to Celina Primary School, her faculty, and to the youngest of our Bobcats. Recently, CISD Administrators and School Board members were given a tour of our new elementary school that will be opening up this fall. The construction site employs over 150 workers each day to ensure that the project stays on target for opening day. The building, even in its rough appearance at present, is impressive. A mock-up classroom was viewed and is the result of much thought and research into what was needed for our students and our teachers. It also shows those that are working in the building the level of detail and excellence expected for every classroom. Last, but not least, during the February Board meeting, the naming of the new elementary was finalized. Having never named a building before, much thought, guidance, and research went into the process. One name stood out above the rest due to his service, his vision, and his love of not only our district, but of the community as well. We are pleased to be able to open this fall, The Donny O’Dell Elementary School in his honor. As we move closer to completion, a special reception will be held at the new elementary school for our students and community members to meet the namesake of our newest campus. Watching the expansion that has taken place in nearby communities over the last several years, lends much research and data into how to handle the ever-looming invasion of growth that is slowly challenging our city and our district. As your Superintendent, I welcome these challenges with the knowledge that every decision made for our district centers squarely on what is best for every student we serve presently and for our future Bobcats!

COLORECTAL CANCER
AWARENESS MONTH When was the last time you had a colonoscopy?
DID YOU
KNOW
?
Colorectal cancer is the third most common type of cancer in both men and women. Often those diagnosed have no signs or symptoms. However, early detection is key! Anyone can get screened!
FACTS: • All patients should begin screening at age 50. • Those with a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps should be screened at an earlier age. • We are now seeing an increase in colorectal cancer in younger adults. • The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that if the entire population was screened at age 50, the number of colorectal related cancers could be cut by 60%. • Screenings can prevent colorectal cancer because polyps, which can progress to colorectal cancer, can be removed during colonoscopy.

I am excited about a fresh new theme for this year’s event...Derby Day. I hope to see a multitude of our auction day guests wearing Derby hats. We will award prizes for the Most Creative Hat and the Best Derby Hat. This year we will be incorporating event management software that will allow for online and mobile bidding as well as express checkout. I know change can be difficult but the auction committee and C.A.R.E. Board felt it was time to integrate technology and I hope it is a welcomed addition.

CELINA GOES
By Renee Marler
C JUN
If you are a fan of mudbugs, gumbo, Cajun music, and all things Creole, you won’t want to miss the 5th Annual Celina Crawfish Fest happening April 8, 2017! Each year, the number of attendees has grown significantly and Jessica Matehuala, Executive Assistant to the Celina City Manager, says they expect this year to be no different. “We had over 6,000 people last year and this being our fifth year, we expect a much bigger turnout this year,” says Matehuala. The boiled crawfish, boudin and etouffee is cooked up by a southwestern Louisiana vendor who raises his own crawfish. In years past, many people complained about the long crawfish lines. Last year, an additional line was added to lessen some of the wait, but it was still a concern going forward. Matehuala said, “We heard the concerns of the attendees and worked to create a 4-line serving system that we feel will have people through the lines much faster. And we have also increased our crawfish order to 10,000 lbs this year.” Another exciting addition this year will be a live gator show by Gator Country’s Gary Saurage. Saurage, an alligator and reptile rescuer, has been featured on A&E, Bravo, CMT, and Animal Planet, among others. Later, you can trade in your gator traps for some dancing shoes as Grammy AwardWinning Cajun Artist Wayne Toups headlines the Ben E. Keith stage once again. Toups’ music is a mix of soul, rock and blues combined into Cajun and Zydeco, creating a new style of music called “ZydeCajun”. Also on stage througout the day will be Joel Savoy, Pine Leaf Boys, Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys, The Band Courtbouillion, and Roddie Romero & The Hub City AllStars. Admission and Parking for Cajun Fest is free and there will also be shuttle service available. The price for crawfish boil is 3 lbs for $20. Additional food, beverages and libations will be available for purchase as well.

With growth and change, there are often concerns. And some Celina parents have expressed their concern with the decision to separate kindergarten from the higher primary grades.

One mother, Meredith Settle, posted on Facebook, “We are parents who are concerned about the impact this will have on the development of our children, the potential for lacking resources to aid in their education success and a disadvantage to our teaching staff.”.

Settle presented the school board with 150 signatures on a petition opposing the change. Another mother, Tiffany McGuire, created a change.org petition for the same purpose. She says, “This campus realignment is setting our kindergarten teachers and students up to fail, which our community will not let happen.” DeMasters debunked the claims by explaining how the primary campus will continue to have the technology access, including iPads, Macbook carts, smart boards, and a campus computer lab. “Staffing, scheduling and resources will be provided so that the campus is in compliance with Fine Arts Standards set by the State of Texas,” said DeMasters. A summary of the information, including demographic studies, projected growth and boundary maps are available on the CISD website. For more information, you are encouraged to contact Mr. Rick DeMasters at 469-742-9100 and/or email rickdemasters@celinaisd.com.

Raising Walls...

...Building Futures By Renee Marler
With the first nails set into two new homes in Celina, the futures of Socorro Ocampo and Jennifer Wilson and their families are looking a little brighter. North Collin County Habitat for Humanity, Celina Mayor Sean Terry, City Council Members along with generous sponsors including Steve and Beth Darling, John and Mary Minnis, Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Texas Instruments, Texas Bank, First United Methodist Church of Celina and others were on hand for the Double Wall Raising Ceremony on February 8, 2017. Ocampo is currently living with her son and his family until her home is completed. She works as a substitute teacher for McKinney ISD and in her free time, she spends time with her grandchildren Jacob, 8 and Sara, 1. Wilson, an elementary cafeteria manager for Richardson ISD, is the newest to qualify for a home with Habitat for Humanity. She and her 2 children Terry and Elizabeth live in Melissa. Wilson said she chose Celina because of the small town feel and the community atmosphere. The two families will be neighbors and were introduced at the ceremony. Habitat for Humanity provides a path to home ownership for families otherwise unable to qualify. In addition to certain income requirements, applicants must be willing to partner with Habitat and agree to 20

A statement by Habitat for Humanity wrote, “We are strengthening our communities one family at a time with a rippling affect that will affect many.” Since 1992, NCC Habitat for Humanity has built 106 new construction homes locally, renovated 143 neighboring homes and constructed 45 homes.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING By Renee Marler
Last month, Gunter ISD held a human trafficking awareness event at Gunter High School. The event, hosted by Kari Tamburin, founder of Resurrect Life, Inc., was attended by over 50 people and spoke about the dangers our children face right here in our communities. Traffick911 CEO George Lynch, was the evening’s first keynote speaker and he started out by detailing how our children and young adults are being sold into slavery and trafficking. “We think of slavery as in the emancipation proclamation, but slavery is happening all over the country, and in our back yards,” explained Lynch. Lynch showed the audience a video from 2015 in which Diane Sawyer did a piece on human trafficking. Shockingly, Texas is ranked number 2 in the country for human trafficking with approximately 400 young girls for sale on any given night. A number of trafficking victims are runaways trying to escape an unhealthy home situation or foster care, but some are simply lured and drawn out in malls, sporting events or other public locations. Social media is playing a huge role in the rise of human trafficking cases. Online dating sites promising lavish lifestyles, secret groups, and many common cell phone apps are being used as breeding grounds for predators. The term “teen sex” has over 18 million searches on Google. Lynch said he has spoken to many predators in an effort to learn more about their tactics. He said, “Predators don’t have to groom them anymore, society is doing it for them.” A look at any magazine, television show or movie trailer shows scantily clad females and creates a sexual template of expectations. Dennis Ozment, Executive Director of 4TheOne, stresses that even the most proactive parenting is not going to prevent children from falling victim. He said, “We encourage parents to monitor their kids phones and electronic devices, but the truth is there is no way to keep therm 100% safe and the biggest deterrent is a good relationship with your kids.” The event was an collaborative effort by Traffick911, 4TheOne, Resurrect Life, Chain Reaction, Refuge City and Redeemed Ministries. For more information or to get involved, please contact Kari Tamburin at kari@resurrectlife.com.
