From the Desk of Rick DeMasters
As our district prepares for the upcoming bond election scheduled for Saturday, May 4th, it is my intention to answer any questions or concerns that our parents and/or community members may have in regard to the bond election. Over the next few months, I will be sharing factual information, and my goal is that you will have all the information necessary to make an informed decision at the polls. First, the bond election and the components involved did not happen overnight. It started in 2016 with our District Strategic Planning process. Fifty-five stakeholders participated on either the Strategic Design Team and/or Action Teams, that created our Mission, Motto, Vision and Values, known as the MMVV. These were the drivers to establishing the five priorities of our strategic plan: Community, Excellence, Innovation, Leadership, and Stewardship. Next, strategic objectives and measures were designed to align with these five priorities. The Strategic Plan was approved for the 2017 school year and will guide the District through 2022. It is a living document, which is subject to review, updating, correction and enhancement and is reviewed

in front of the CISD Board of Trustees annually. The plan can be found on our website under the district tab/required postings. Second, the district established a 10-year Facilities Committee, whose purpose was to study enrollment projections, facility priorities, and bonding capacity over the next ten years. Again, the committee members were comprised of numerous stakeholders that poured over data regarding campus capacities, feeder patterns, configuration of campuses, land acquisitions and facilities for our nonacademic programs. The consensus of the committee members was to retain one high school for as long as possible. Presently, the current capacity of Celina High School is 1500 students. Committee members understood that in order to remain a one high school district, additional classrooms, CTE, athletic and fine arts spaces would be added to maximize the campus capacity to 3000 students. The committee also agreed that all future elementary campuses will be constructed to serve a capacity of 750 students. Donny O’Dell Elementary will serve as a prototype for future elementary campuses, which will save
the district money on design fees. Facades will differ on future buildings in order to blend with the neighborhood in which they are located. All future middle school campuses will house grades 6-8 with a total student capacity of 1500. District administrators and select faculty members are visiting state-of-the-art middle school campuses around the area to help select attributes that will enhance the academic environment of our middle school students. The committee was also charged to review several feeder patterns and configurations from districts in the Dallas Ft. Worth area. With the committee’s commitment to having only one high school campus, the Southlake model was chosen to take us through the next ten years. Celina ISD has a footprint of over 97 square miles, which surpasses many area districts. With that in mind, the committee realized that after 10 more years, Celina ISD may have to transition to the McKinney model, which features multiple high school campuses as our District continues to grow. We are so fortunate to have parents, students, city leadership, our business community and faculty members that worked tirelessly on perfecting a plan for our future. These volunteers guided their decisions to not only do what is in the best interest of the students we serve, but to also preserve the health and safety of all students and staff. Za’atar: This traditional Middle Eastern blend of spices including thyme, oregano and sesame seeds is perfect for sprinkling on flatbreads, roasted vegetables, nuts or popcorn. It can also be mixed into hummus or oil for dipping. n Harissa: A spicy flavor found in North African cuisine, this seasoning is made from a combination of chilies, warm spices and mint. Add it to meat and veggies before roasting, stir it into cooked rice and grains, mix it into yogurt to make a dip or combine it with roasted bell peppers and oil to turn this spice into its namesake sauce. n Shawarma: Often associated with the slow roasting of meat, this Middle Eastern street food favorite is made with cinnamon, coriander, cardamom and more. Use this seasoning to flavor an easy marinade for chicken, pork or steak. Look for these flavors as well as new Peruvian and Berbere seasonings in the spice section of retailers nationwide. CLEVER KITCHEN UPGRADES Fresh colors and textures for a functional kitchen style
F
FAMILY FEATURES
or avid cooks, seasoned hosts and busy families, the kitchen is likely the center of daily life and a place where both form and function are of the utmost importance. This high-traffic space generally influences the design of the rest of the house, especially if the home has more of an open-concept layout. The colors and materials used in the kitchen normally set the tone for the rest of the home. When it comes to considerations like finish and materials, kitchen cabinetry trends are shifting toward colored cabinetry and a mixture of exposed textures and materials. 16 | March 2019 WeAreCELINA.com
Colorful allure
White kitchen cabinets have dominated the market for years; white is constant, safe and classic. While white kitchens are likely to remain a popular option for homeowners, buying trends are showing a shift in painted cabinetry design from classic white to eyecatching colors. Natural colors, burnt orange, shades of gray, blue hues and green tones are likely to be the leaders in painted cabinetry colors in 2019, and all are offered through an option like Wellborn’s ColorInspire program. For those with a visionary and creative approach to design, the blue tones for cabinetry reach atmospheric wisps of colors and capture the unique space between technology and spirituality. The unbridled adventurer may use burnt orange to soak in the blue of endless horizon and the subtle earthy colors of the high plains and desert. For the naturalist, green earthy tones can bring the wonder of the world into your kitchen. For the cozy home-body, dark warm tones of gray on cabinetry add a rich and modern scope that spans space and time.
Focus on Function
Trends in texture
From classic to modern and from farmhouse to high-tech modernistic styling, designers work to make surfaces make a statement. With cabinetry, there’s no shortage of options: matte and glossy, dark and light, with and without handles. Technology has played a major role in the improved quality of laminates in the kitchen; many of today’s laminate options have a more realistic appearance and texture than their ancestors. For a more authentic wood look, an option like Wellborn Cabinet’s Decorative Laminate Veneer Door Collection is filled with color choices in a range of materials spanning embossed and textured melamine, acrylic, laminates, metal and more. Another option is cabinetry featuring timber with exposed grain for a balance between embracing nature and exuding sophistication. This trend celebrates imperfections and allows you to bring nature into your home. Defined or rustic woods are made from materials such as walnut, oak and cherry. For nature enthusiasts or those seeking the rustic farmhouse style, you can find beautiful organic finishes in Wellborn’s Aspire Full Access Frameless line. The standout feature is heavy graining. Hand sanding, along with hand-rubbed finishes, provide a quality product with varied textures that minimizes the need for a lot of color. Explore more trendy looks for your new kitchen at Wellborn.com.
A beautiful kitchen may please the eye, but when it comes down to it, a kitchen’s function is its greatest value. Integrate these ideas for a kitchen that offers maximum function for one of your home’s most-used spaces. Declutter the countertops. Consider incorporating pull-out and roll-out trays into your cabinetry to maximize your storage space, as well as dressing your cabinets with appropriate inserts and organizational kits. Eliminate wasted space by adding corner cabinets to utilize all your available space. In addition, an option like Wellborn Cabinet’s Aspire Full Access Frameless cabinetry makes it simple to create diverse design styles with better storage options than traditional cabinet framing allows. Without a face frame on the front of the cabinet box, this style provides more room for storage and easier accessibility. You can create a modernistic kitchen, a rustic farmhouse kitchen or a nature-styled kitchen. Determine the island’s function. The island is often the visual centerpiece of the kitchen, but determining its function can maximize its benefit. Fully functional cabinetry around the island can provide added storage space. For example, custom cabinetry appliance panels let you not only conceal bulky appliances, they also give your wall cabinets more space and functionality. Make recycling easy. Place the recycle and garbage bins in a drawer near the sink to allow for easier accessibility and keep them out of sight.

BEYOND THE GARDEN GATES New venues, entertainment, handcrafted goods featured on 2019 Celina Garden Tour
18 | March 2019 WeAreCELINA.com
The 2019 Celina Garden Tour, an exclusive showcase of eight area home gardens and wineries, will be presented rain or shine from 9:00am to 4:00pm on Saturday, June 8th. Advance tickets are $20, and will be available online beginning March 16th at www.celinagardenclub. org, for pickup starting at 8:00am on tour day in Celina’s historic downtown square, near Walnut and Ohio Streets. Same-day tickets may also be purchased there for $25. Tickets will also be sold at four area retailers: Annie Jack, 222 W. Walnut St., Celina; D&L Farm and Home, 811 N. Louisiana Drive, Celina; Texas Seasons Nursery, 807 N. Preston Road, Celina; and Cristina’s Stone & Garden Center, 14400 Preston Road, Frisco. Presented by the Celina Garden Club, the selfguided tour winds through the picturesque countryside of Celina, providing stunning views of its vast farmlands and gently rolling terrain as well as rare glimpses at several of area’s most impressive gardens. “We are excited about the 2019 Garden Tour as we enjoy sharing Celina’s beautiful gardens and wineries with our North Texas friends and neighbors,” said Celina Garden Club President Lynn Balint, whose own home garden is featured on the tour. Other venues on the tour include Caudalie Crest Winery; Eden Hill Winery & Vineyard; a private home vineyard; Maryland Farms; and a trio of suburban-home gardens that highlight the beauty and benefits of indoor-outdoor living. An assortment of handcrafted foods, beverages and products will be available for purchase at several venues, including homemade pies and preserves, home décor and other items. The 2019 Celina Garden Tour will highlight the burgeoning area’s rustic charm and resources, according to Melissa Green, who oversees special events and philanthropy for the Celina Garden Club. “This year’s tour reflects the urban growth Celina has experienced with the addition of new, smaller garden spaces featured at homes in a couple of the city’s suburban developments. It will also highlight our rural heritage with sprawling vineyards and peaceful country properties.”

Growing CELINA
Have a Neglected and Small Side Yard? Let’s Fix That! Side yards that are long and narrow present a design challenge. Are you yourself struggling with this challenge? Do you need some landscaping ideas to help you out? If so, begin by asking yourself a couple of questions about your side yard: How often do you use the area as an important route for getting from point A to point B on your property? Is the area wide enough to contain a planting bed as well as a walkway or pathway? Deciding on a Walkway or Pathway for Your Side Yard Do you often find yourself cutting through the side yard in question (i.e., the left side yard or the right side yard) on a practical mission? For example, if you had to push a garden cart filled with mulch from the backyard to the front yard, would you tend to cut through this particular area? If so, it behooves you to build a no-nonsense walkway through the area, a surface you won’t be tripping on. A flagstone walkway, for instance, will provide a nice, even surface. Other materials that yield a smooth and stable surface include: Paving Bricks Concrete Pavers Decomposed Granite Patterned Stamped Concrete Travertine stone
20 | March 2019 WeAreCELINA.com
A wide, attractive walkway running up and down a narrow side yard can also serve a function similar to that of a patio or sitting area. But if, by contrast, you do not cut through the area very often, you have some less formal (also less expensive and easier) options at your disposal. For example, you could lay down garden stepping stones to create an informal path that winds its way through the side yard. Curved pathways are more attractive than straight ones (a straight path will reinforce aesthetically how tunnel-like the side yard is, which is precisely what you wish to avoid) and are a good choice where aesthetic concerns are paramount. Plant a ground-cover, such as Creeping Thyme, between the stepping stones to add visual interest. Alternatively, you may choose not to have a well-defined path at all. You can suppress weed plants in the area by laying down weed fabric, covered by shredded cedar mulch. Important note: Ring the Call Before You Dig phone number (for Texas call 811 on your cell phone or 1-800-344-8377 from any landline phone) before plunging that shovel into the ground! They’ll make sure you’re not going to be severing any cables, etc. Planting in Your Side Yard If you have sufficient room in your side yard, you will most likely wish to install plants there, to add visual interest to the space. Using container gardens or raised beds eliminates having to dig into the soil, but let’s assume that you will be installing your plants in the ground. The first thing to do is to determine whether the side yard is mainly sunny or mainly shady. Then, when you’re researching your possible plant choices, be careful to note whether they are sun-loving plants or shade-tolerant
plants. The preferences of the plant, rather than your own preferences, must take precedence over what you think looks good there! If you’re planning on covering the ground with a weed fabric and mulch (as mentioned above), a low-maintenance planting option is to “pocket plant” with shrubs. For each shrub, make an incision in the weed fabric just big enough to insert your root ball. Features to Consider for Side Yards Consider building a small water fountain for your side yard. The look and sound of water has a unique ability to enliven a space. A long, narrow side yard can have an oppressive feel to it. What can you do? Break up the expanse with an object upon which the eye can rest, for relief. One possible object to use for this purpose is a garden arbor. While such a structure can serve an aesthetic purpose even in a large side yard, an arbor will be especially helpful in improving the design in a small side while adding comfort as well. Enhance the arbor’s beauty by training vines upon it. Again, consider your light conditions before choosing your vines. Side-Yard Choices: A Summary Essentially, you have 3 design choices for relatively narrow side yards:

You can opt for a walkway or pathway, without planting beds (except perhaps for annual plants or small perennial flowers), if the space is really tight. If there’s sufficient room, you can have both, with the path or walkway bordered by plants on each side of it. Or you needn’t have a well-defined path or walkway at all. In case #3 above, just make sure that if you grow plants in the space, you leave yourself enough room to walk freely amongst them not just for functional purposes but for maintenance reasons also. Question: Jimmie, I recently bought a “Bloodgood” Japanese Maple tree. I purchased the tree early last spring and it seemed to be doing fine until the heat of the summer hit. It then spent all summer basically burning up and all the leaves being scorched? What did I do wrong? Janet P. in Prosper. Answer: Hi Janet, sounds to me like you have installed your new tree in the wrong location. Typically, all Japanese Maples are considered to be strictly shade ornamental trees under the canopy of an older established tree. The exception would be on the east side of your house where you’re getting morning sunlight exposure only. Any location on your property where it’s getting full sun and you’re setting yourself up for some muchburnt foliage! Until next time...Happy Gardening!!
