Family

Meaningful and Fun Family Thanksgiving Traditions There are certain traditions we all recognize for Thanksgiving… football, turkey, pumpkin pie and the Macy’s Day Parade are staples. Thanksgiving should be made up of customs that you will remember forever. Passing down family traditions to your children and sharing them with a table full of friends and family is pure joy. If you are looking for new ways to incorporate some unique family traditions, we’ve provided a few!

Have a Special Breakfast Everyone knows that Thanksgiving belongs to the turkey, but why not start a new tradition that includes a special breakfast as well? Most mornings are hectic and rushed…leaving little time for an old-fashioned family breakfast. Start Thanksgiving morning off with a relaxed meal of family favorites that is sure to set the scene for plenty of gratitude. Hot, fresh pumpkin bread, pancakes and maple syrup or homemade biscuits with country sausage gravy…what a perfect way start the holiday!

Pass Around a Gratitude Journal Begin with a beautiful blank journal that your family can use for years to come. Then, before the turkey is served, pass the journal around the table and ask all of the guests to write at least one thing they are thankful for. An adult can record for children that are too young to write. Over the years, the journal will become filled with cherished comments and memories. It’s fun to reflect on these messages at Thanksgiving celebrations and see how your family’s gratitude reflections have changed over time.

Create a Thankful Tree Place bundles of curly willow in a sturdy, tall vase. Spread out the branches to allow for plenty of room to hang the leaves. Buy or cutout a mix of paper leaves in fall hues of orange, red, yellow and brown. Using a hole punch, make a hole at the base of each leaf. Give each guest a leaf and pen to write what they are thankful for. Once they are finished with their gratitude message, have them tie their leaf to the branch with 3” strips of gold, white or black baker’s twine. Before sitting down for 6 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

your Thanksgiving meal, invite your family guests to read and enjoy the notes of gratitude. Keeping the leaves year to year will help your family remember how many blessings they have in their lives.

Have a Table Toast Sometimes, in the stress of preparing the meal and readying the house for family and guests, the most important part of Thanksgiving is forgotten…being thankful! If passing around a journal seems too formal or the Thankful Tree doesn’t seem to fit with your family, try a roundtable toast. Have each guest raise their glass – even if it’s a sippy cup – and make a toast for what they’re thankful for. It’s a great way to start Thanksgiving dinner and share some laughs and appreciation with those you love most.

Kick Off the Holiday Season This year, Thanksgiving is very late in the month. So, instead of fighting the urge to delay the Christmas season, embrace it! Buy matching Christmas pajamas for all the kids – adults too if you want – and wrap them up in Christmas paper. After your last bite of pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving evening, let the kids unwrap their first Christmas gift of the season. Your family will enjoy a special night of togetherness while in your matching pajamas watching your favorite holiday movie.

T

he month of November reminds us that autumn is coming to a close. Before we know it, the beauty of that season will be discarded under every tree like a blanket waiting for the first signs of snow. Luckily for us, we live in Texas and will most likely not be looking for signs of snow, but instead will steady our focus on the changes to our present landscape as numerous construction projects grow near. When and where will the new campuses be located is a hot topic on social media. During the months leading up to the May 2019 bond election, information was given to the public in regard to a proposed timeline for future Celina ISD construction projects. These projects are expected to accommodate the district’s student growth projections over the next ten years. The projects included four elementary campuses, two middle school campuses, renovations to Celina Elementary, additions to Celina High School, district wide improvements and land acquisitions. The first of the slated projects has begun with the renovations to the Celina Elementary campus. Our high school additions, which will include finishing out the proposed baseball/ softball complex, additional locker rooms, public restrooms and concessions will be starting soon. Elementary campus #3 is in the completion stage in regard to the design plan. This campus is to be located west of the Tollway extension with an opening date of the Fall of 2021. The first of two Middle School campuses to be built has a proposed opening date of the Fall of 2022 and will replace the two buildings that presently house our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. With that said, growth drives construction, but severe weather can delay growth if construction cannot be completed per the allotted time given. Our area has had issues with severe weather over the last year, causing construction projects and the projected grand openings of multiple subdivisions to be delayed. These delays have also impacted the completion of roads to and through new home developments that will eventually house our future elementary campuses. These delays make predicting exact locations for our future campuses not as clear cut as they once were. With the passing of the bond, the money was to not only be used for construction, but to obtain land for future secondary campuses and/or district buildings. Obtaining land for elementary campuses is a little easier to come by than the acreage needed for secondary campuses. Our junior high and high school campuses have a much larger footprint and with the increasing cost of land in this sector of the North Dallas corridor, it’s imperative that the district make these purchases now while land is available. The district recently closed on a large parcel of land that could possibly be used for a future high school and/or middle school campus. The school district is actively looking at other tracts for future secondary campuses as well. As we start these projects, we will include updates through our website and social media pages, keeping you informed regarding the changes taking place throughout the district. Over the next several months, the district will be closely keeping watch on the progress made in the areas where our future campuses are to be built. With autumn coming to a close, it is our hope that the forecast calls for stable weather that will keep our construction projects on track and ahead of the growth that is steadily making its way to our community. Rick DeMasters, Superintendent of Schools, Celina ISD

Thanksgiving Tablescape: Woodsy Elegance Thanksgiving is right around the corner which means now is the time to get comfortable inside your home and decorate for your family feast. Creating a Tablescape is an easy way to add Thanksgiving décor and dress up your dining room. Using a mixture of pumpkins, candles, foliage and flowers, group your items together to create a decorative arrangement. You don’t need to spend a fortune – in fact, by using natural materials and repurposing items you already have, you can create a homespun table that will welcome your guests and celebrate your blessings. We incorporated a mix of natural elements and calming colors in this dining room for a look of woodsy elegance. We started with a beautiful floral arrangement centerpiece filled with our favorites – lilies, chocolate colored sunflowers, orchids and creamy white hydrangeas. From there, we added birchwood chargers topped with white china plates with gold trim, as well as some gold accent pieces. Fragrant mint colored candles tucked into white and gold candlesticks, fresh eucalyptus and pinecones cast a note of laid-back romance and woodsy glam to the holiday table.

Antique farmhouse ceramic planter showing off this lush arrangement of autumn’s most gorgeous flowers. The fabulous fall centerpiece includes fresh hydrangeas in cream, brown sunflowers, rust red lily, cream white lilies, burgundy cymbidium orchids, and solidaster accented with fresh seeded and silver dollar eucalyptus greenery. On the serving buffet, we hung our grapevine wreath over the mirror to create our focal point. Incorporating elements of varying heights with vases and candlesticks, the buffet always gives the eye something to focus on without being overwhelming. We kept the woodsy elegance theme by using birch bark candles and fresh eucalyptus right along with the gold accent pieces and creamy colors. To tie in the colors from the floral centerpiece, we added colorful candles and sprigs of eucalyptus to the gold candlesticks. A few pumpkins and pinecones pull it all together for a wonderful autumn display.

Dress up your table or shelf with this Ivory Pre-lit Ceramic Pumpkin with Burlap Bow! The cut-out design creates a trellis pattern shadow when lit.

The Perfect Turkey

Why all the fuss and stress over the Thanksgiving turkey? Well, it’s the centerpiece of the entire meal and there is usually a table full of people that you don’t want to disappoint…so it’s a BIG deal! But here is a complete fuss-free and easy method for cooking a perfect, beautiful Thanksgiving Turkey. You don’t even need an expensive roasting pan – the real key to a perfect turkey is to not overcook it. Plan ahead to get the timing right and you’ll come out with a gorgeous, super juicy, perfectly cooked bird. WHAT SIZE TURKEY DO YOU NEED: Buy about 2 pounds of turkey per person…that way you’ll have leftovers! HOW TO THAW YOUR TURKEY: Allow plenty of time for your turkey to thaw. A good rule of thumb is to allow one day in the refrigerator for every five pounds of meat. It’s a good idea to give yourself one extra day, just to be safe. Also make sure you set your turkey on a cookie sheet or a pan to catch any liquid as it defrosts. DON’T WASH THE TURKEY: If you wash your turkey in the sink, you will contaminate your sink. Instead, remove it from its packaging, dry it off with some paper towels and prepare it for the oven. Any bacteria on the turkey will be killed in the hot oven while it bakes. DON’T BRINE OR BASTE THE TURKEY: If you’re using a high-quality turkey from the store (like a Butterball), brining is an unnecessary step. You can do it if you want, but you can achieve a moist turkey without it. Basting is also unnecessary. It requires you to constantly open the oven, which causes it to lose heat and take longer to cook, which could lead to a dry turkey.

16 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

DON’T COOK STUFFING INSIDE THE TURKEY: If you try to put stuffing inside the cavity of the bird, the turkey will be overcooked by the time the stuffing reaches a temperature that’s safe to eat. Instead, use the Good Ole’ Country Dressing recipe and cook it in a casserole dish. You can then fill the cavity of the bird with things that will give it flavor: salt, pepper, garlic, onion, apples, oranges, pineapple or celery. TEST THE TURKEY WITH A THERMOMETER: The only way to really tell if it’s cooked to 165 degrees Fahrenheit is by using a thermometer. Once it reaches 160 degrees F, take it out, tent it with foil and allow it to cook that extra 5 degrees inside the foil tent. LET THE TURKEY REST: After removing it from the oven, let it rest for 15 – 40 minutes in the pan and tent with foil. If you’re using the drippings for gravy, move the turkey from its pan to a cutting board and tent it with foil while it rests there.

HOW TO PREPARE: First, remove the thawed bird from its packaging. Remove the neck and the bag of giblets and either discard or save them for gravy. Pat the turkey with paper towels. Next, season the cavity with salt and pepper. Stuff it with quartered apples, oranges, pineapples, onions, celery and fresh herbs. To help the turkey sit flatter, tuck the wings underneath and set it on a roasting rack inside a roasting pan, or on a bed of chopped veggies in a disposable roasting pan.

Next, use your fingers to loosen and lift the skin above the breast and smooth a few tablespoons of butter, garlic and herbs underneath. Use twine to tie the legs together and then slather the outside of the turkey with more butter, garlic and herbs. That’s it! You are now ready to let your oven do the rest of the work! Place the turkey into your preheated oven (350 degrees F) and bake for approximately 20 minutes per pound. Check the turkey about halfway through cooking to see if the skin is golden brown, and then place a large piece of tinfoil over the meat to keep it from overcooking.

GOOD OLE’ COUNTRY DRESSING 1 pound bulk breakfast sausage 12 ounce bag of Pepperidge Farm Country Style Cube Stuffing 2 cups chopped celery 1 large onion, chopped 7 cups chicken stock 1 teaspoon dried sage leaves 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning 1/4 stick butter, melted Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Cook sausage in a large skillet until it starts to brown. Add melted butter, celery and onion and sauté for 5 – 10 minutes, or until transparent. Empty the cube stuffing into a large bowl and then pour the sausage, celery and onion mixture on top. Add the chicken stock, salt, pepper, sage and poultry seasoning and mix well. Pour dressing mixture into a greased pan and back until cooked through and golden brown, about 45 minutes. Recipe from Barbara Novak

Fashion

Fall Jackets: Our Favorite Layer Players Meet your new BFFF (Best Friends For Fall). Not as heavy-duty as a puffer, not as lightweight as a cardie, our fall jacket picks are the perfect coldweather companions. This season, our favorite silhouettes are dipped in autumn’s jewel-toned hues, and cleverly crafted in faux leather, super soft suede and sturdy cotton. Wear these smart styles over your fall staples––from plush sweaters and plaid shirts to bodyskimming knit dresses and distressed denim––and top off your look with a warm layer of cool.

THE MODERN LEATHER JACKET Nothing says “cool” quite like a leather jacket—even those of the faux variety. Maybe it’s that bad-boy vibe left over from the rock bands of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Whatever it is, this versatile all-weather closet staple can put a casual chic spin on just about any outfit. Team it with a pair of distressed boyfriend jeans and a plaid shirt for a low-key look, or layer it over a little black lace dress for a fancier affair.

THE CHIC CARGO JACKET Utilitarian in more ways than one, the cargo jacket makes an appearance this season in bright colors (racy red!) as well as the original army green. This lighter weight jacket can be styled in a multitude of ways, whether you’re pairing it with a soft tee and comfy leggings or getting your girly on in a flowy dress and classic pumps. Keeping your other pieces neutral sets up the bolder-hued jackets for instant style stardom.

THE EDGY MOTO JACKET Little did Irving Schott know that his first motorcycle jacket, the “Perfecto”, designed in 1928 and sold for an astounding (for the times) $5.50, would go on to become one of our most coveted street-style jackets. No longer relegated to rough-riding Harley dudes, the moto has the uncanny ability to turn just about any ensemble into something sleek and special—even more so this season, thanks to richly-colored riffs on the classic black style. We love the contrast of a sugary-sweet floral dress paired with a stretch twill moto. Go ahead, channel your inner rocker chick.

THE SUPPLE SUEDE JACKET Think leather brushed to a buttery softness, and you’ve got suede. A suede jacket will keep you toasty without that bundled-up, bulky look. While it does require a bit more care (spills or stains can be a pain, and don’t get us started on rain!), we think it’s worth the extra effort. A suede jacket instantly elevates your outfit. Try a tailored silhouette with your favorite high-waisted jeans and a cute crop top. The seasonal juxtaposition is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

THE BOMB BOMBER A timeless piece of outerwear traditionally made of leather, the bomber originated in the first World War and was worn by flyboys to keep the chilly cockpit temperatures at bay. Today, this versatile jacket—ingeniously reinvented for civilians—is offered in a multitude of colors, cuts and fabrics. We’re especially fond of quilted olive (not quite military, but close). A less structured hemline gives it a femme feel. Wear it for warmth with your favorite jeans and booties, or pair it with a frilly frock to add edgy attitude to your outfit.

THE TIMELESS JEAN JACKET Long, cropped or somewhere in between, denim jackets are one of the most versatile closet staples and a top pick for this season’s love affair with layering. We’re currently crushing on the feminine take of the working man’s classic Trucker jacket with its flapcovered pockets and button-up front. Try it splashed in a stone wash, layered over your favorite knit dress (or even a summery frock!). Add tights and booties for warmth. Of course, jeans work equally well—just make sure the dye is not too matchy-matchy and you’re golden.

Article compliments of Stitch Fix. With such a plethora of fall jackets to choose from, it’s hard to know where to start. Ask your Stitch Fix Stylist to surprise you with a toasty topper to complement your unique style. Visit www.stitchfix.com to schedule your fix! 18 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

Growing Celina

How the Pros Keep a Bright Green Lawn all Winter Annual vs. Perennial Ryegrass: If you plan to overseed your lawn this fall, knowing the difference between annual and perennial ryegrass, and how each one performs, will help you make the best choice for your situation. Perennial ryegrass has a deep green color and slower growth habit. Even though it has the word “perennial” in its name, in full sun, this cool season grass will fade, and your permanent turf will flourish when temperatures warm and consistently reach the 90s. In the shade however, it may stay cool enough for perennial rye to persist into the summer. Use of a specific variety is not that critical. Most are packaged blends of 2 to 3 varieties best adapted to a particular region. Annual ryegrass is much less expensive than perennial rye. However, it takes on a pale yellow-green color when soil temperatures cool and it must be cut more often than perennial ryegrass. The best use for annual ryegrass is for large area coverage and for erosion control. It may also be used as a temporary lawn while waiting to install permanent Bermuda grass or St. Augustine grass once temperatures warm. Commercial properties and landscaping contractors prefer to use perennial rye for overseeding. It is imperative that a pre-emergent not be used prior to seeding either type of ryegrass, as this will inhibit the development of the seed. The next step is to drop the mower setting a couple of notches and cut the lawn. In Bermuda grass, especially, this exposes mostly stems and causes the lawn to look brown. This is more challenging to accomplish in St. Augustinegrass because of its wide leaf blades, but this process is essential as it allows the ryegrass seed to contact the soil, which is critical for germination. Use approximately 8 – 10 pounds of ryegrass seed for every 1,000 square feet of lawn area, being careful not to get the seed in your flower beds. Two to three passes with a drop spreader open to its widest setting will create a buffer zone. Then use a broadcast spreader to finish the seeding. 20 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

After seeding, apply a 20-5-10 or a 15-5-10 fertilizer with half of its nitrogen in a slow-release form at half-strength. Once the seed has sprouted, maintain the deep green color throughout the growing season by fertilizing at the regular rate in late November and early February…one pound of actual nitrogen per 1000 square feet. Once the seed and fertilizer have been applied, keeping the seed moist so germination can occur is your next objective. Water once or twice a day, 5 – 10 minutes per area, but do not let the water puddle. In three to five days, in warm weather, new seedlings will start emerging. When the new seedlings are about an inch or so tall, decrease the watering to every other day, but increase the amount of time for each area. Gradually cut back your number of days to once a week, applying an inch of water if no rainfall has occurred. November through February, check the soil’s moisture, and if the top inch of the soil is dry to the touch, irrigate. A good mowing height for ryegrass is 2 – 3 inches. It is best to mow again before it reaches a height of 3 – 4 inches. This may only mean cutting the grass every two to three weeks when the weather is cool, more often however in the spring. Timely mowing will have a positive effect on health, vigor and weed suppression. In an overseeded lawn, weeds usually are not a major concern. Cool season broadleaf weeds will be the main culprit and are usually controlled with an herbicide. Apply the weed control following the label directions, but only after the lawn has been mowed at least three times. Use a dedicated spot sprayer on a sunny day when temperatures are between 55 – 85 degrees and winds are light. Spring pre-emergents for Bermuda and St. Augustine grass will still be applied at their normal times of March 1st and June 1st. Planting ryegrass in the fall really brightens the landscape and gives tired lawns a new refreshed look. It is especially effective for homes on the market for sale during the winter…the lush lawn makes them look appealing and well cared for.

Question: Hi Jimmie! I’m a beginner in gardening. I have a big problem here. I’ve just recently planted my first landscaping but it did not turn out well. Even worse, some did not even grow and 60 percent of everything I planted has died! I bought everything a nursery employee from a reputable nursery in Frisco told me did well here and went straight home and dug the holes and planted right away. Could you give me some tips regarding this matter? I would really appreciate it. --Tim in Celina Answer: Hi Tim! The best way to advance beyond the “beginner” stage in gardening is to become well versed in the matter of soil preparation. Adding organic soil conditioners will improve that “unfertile soil” you’re working with. Things will only do as well as what you plant them in. With our soil being predominately black clay and caliche the only thing I can think of that might do well without soil amendments might be Cotton! Don’t feel bad: at least you’ve identified a potential source for the problem. Good soil is truly the foundation of successful gardening and landscaping.

Question: Hi Jimmie. I like a lot of different plants, but as a beginner at landscape design I’m not sure how to group them. Aesthetic considerations aside, is there a rule of thumb for grouping plant A with plant B, rather than having it grow next to plant C? Thanks for your time. --Macy in Celina Answer: Hi Macy! You may like a lot of different plants, but as a beginner at landscape design, you may not be sure how to group them. There are, of course, aesthetic considerations in landscape design. That’s the fun part of landscape design. But there are also practical reasons for grouping plant A with plant B, rather than having it grow next to plant C. Rule of thumb for practical landscape design: group plants with similar requirements together. This includes sun and watering requirements. Grouping them together will reduce maintenance for you (saving you from dragging the garden hose around unnecessarily, etc.). Until next time…Happy Gardening!! -Jimmie

A Cape Cod Thanksgiving By Heather Reynolds

C

ape Cod is known as a wonderful vacation for good reason: It’s a beautiful oceanside area with miles of unspoiled beaches, hiking trails, ocean vistas and sand dunes. October to April is the Cape’s off-season, which means that the exorbitant prices for accommodations fall during this time. And while the prices are low, there are plenty of things to do in Cape Code during November – without the crowds of the summer tourist season. Daily temperatures are fairly mild, sometimes reaching up to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Cape Cod is known as one of the top cultural centers of Massachusetts. There is an abundance of museums of all types, catering to enthusiasts, children, history buffs and nature lovers. You’ll want to be sure and visit the Museum of Natural History, the Children’s Museum, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, the Sandwich Glass Museum and the Nantucket Whaling Museum. And due to its rich history, New England is indisputably the best region to go antiquing. November is a fitting time to visit, as it was at the Cape’s northern tip that the Mayflower first landed on November 11, 1620, bringing the Pilgrims to the “New World”. It was in 1621 that the Pilgrims and Native Americans held their three day Feast – The First Thanksgiving. And what better way to honor this historic milestone than a trip to the Cape to celebrate! Each year, during the weekend before Thanksgiving, the America’s Hometown Thanksgiving celebration is held in Plymouth. The celebration of Thanksgiving becomes history-brought-to-life as Pilgrims, Native Americans, Soldiers, Patriots and Pioneers climb out of the history books and onto the streets of Plymouth. And this year’s event kicks off the 2020 Celebration Series which celebrates the 400th Anniversary of the Mayflower Pilgrims’ First Landing in 1620! Another fun tradition that you won’t want to miss is on November 27th, when more than 3,000 lights will shine during the Annual Lighting of the Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown. You will also want to visit the Provincetown Museum to see the Pilgrim exhibit, complete with a diorama of the signing of the Mayflower Compact, the first governing document of the new Plymouth settlement. 22 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

Even though some Cape Cod hotels close during the off-season, many stay open with reduced rates. Also, because vacancies are common during November, don’t be afraid to negotiate a lower rate or ask for a room with an ocean view. One of the best places that we found was the luxurious Wequassett Resort and Golf Club. Nestled in the elbow of Cape Cod, this meticulously landscaped luxury resort hideaway features lavish guest rooms and suites, five acclaimed restaurants, two extraordinary beaches and eighteen holes of golf. Stay in the 435 square foot Premiere Water View Cottage room, with a king size bed and queen sofa bed, sitting area, luxurious bath and a waterfront deck, complete with an outdoor fireplace.
