CISD News

From the Desk of Mr. Rick DeMasters Celina ISD Superintendent of Schools The season of fall is much like the beginning of a new school year. Each leaf that falls from the tree seems to represent the abundance of activities and programs offered throughout the district during the first few months of school. The month of September seemed to fly by as many of our parents enjoyed getting to know the administrative staff members at our campuses during the principal/counselor coffee hours. Curriculum nights were held to help parents understand the information being taught in the classroom. Senior pictures were taken in cap and gown signaling the start of graduation protocol for our CHS Senior Class. And last, but not least, a plethora of sporting events from cross country to football and volleyball to fill up your calendar. If you thought September went by quickly, then it will not come as a surprise when October seems to be the shortest month of all. This month holds a special place in our hearts because it signifies one of our oldest traditions, which is Bobcat Homecoming. It’s a time to catch up with recent graduates who return for the annual Bobcat Homecoming festivities, bringing with them new college friends to share the experience with. The 2016 Bobcat Homecoming Parade is scheduled for Friday, October 7th, starting at 2:00pm. The Celina School District has a scheduled early release, so that the entire community can enjoy the parade and festivities. The Varsity Bobcats will take on Caddo Mills that evening starting at 7:30pm, and halftime festivities will include the crowning of our new CHS 2016 Homecoming Queen. The CHS Homecoming Dance will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at Celina High School. The month of October is also a busy month for our Celina High School Bobcat Band. This is a State qualifying year, and our band will be competing in marching competitions almost every weekend throughout the month of October. The students have been working on their program since camp

and have continued to practice their drills and music to be at their best for contest season. If you would like to hear some great music, visit the band website for their contest schedule. It’s a fantastic way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Our FFA Department will also be making their annual trek to the State Fair of Texas to compete in an array of events. The students will begin showing their animals during the first week of October. The Agricultural Mechanics show will be held on October 13th, which will highlight the ingenuity of our students and the projects they have created. CHS Agricultural Science Teacher Mr. Shannon Layman will be taking CHS students to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana from October 18-22. Former CHS Graduate Micaela Layman will be awarded the American FFA Degree, which demonstrates the highest level of commitment to the program and is given to less than 1% of FFA members. Celina Elementary and Middle School parents will enjoy “Donuts with Dad” and “Muffins with Mom” programs scheduled for the month of October. This is a wonderful time to spend with your children and to get to know their friends and other parents within the community. The friendships made through these events will last a lifetime as your families continue to grow and experience life in Celina. Last, but not least, you will want to mark your calendar for the Grand Opening of the Garden of Oz on October 22nd, at Celina Elementary School. With their commitment to excellence, The Celina Ladies Garden Club and gracious donors throughout the area, have created and an outdoor science classroom that will encompass all areas of the curriculum. Students will be greeted by the Tin Man and will be able to walk down a yellow brick road, taking in native plants and flowers along the way. Elementary students will be responsible for nurturing and growing their own plants

in the Garden of Oz. Through this activity, they will understand the tools necessary to provide for themselves and in the future, their families. As you can see, the month of October is filled with many activities for all to enjoy. Take a moment to find a spot on the square among the painted storefront windows, and orange and white ribbons blowing in the breeze to watch the annual homecoming parade and pep rally. Don’t forget to keep October 22nd free to get a first-hand look at the Garden of Oz and marvel in the significance of this addition to the lives of our students. Both of these events, as different as they appear, are actually connected to the importance that we place on faith, family, school, and tradition in Celina, Texas. A place to grow Garden of Oz designed to inspire, educate Celina students By Lisa Ferguson

Photo courtesy of Celina Garden of Oz Facebook page - An artist’s rendering of the Garden of Oz, an educational garden scheduled to open Oct. 22 at Celina Elementary School. The $150,000 project was built entirely with donations. Teachers and students at the school will use the garden for lessons in science, mathematics and literature among other subjects.

O

ne of the most memorable moments in cinematic history is when farm girl Dorothy Gale gingerly steps out from her tornado-battered, black-and-white home and into the breathtaking, Technicolor realm of Munchkinland in the 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz.” Students at Celina Elementary School may experience a similar sense of wonder and excitement as they begin to explore the new Garden of Oz, an interactive learning environment set to debut on campus this month. The public is invited to attend a grand-opening celebration for the elaborately themed, selfsustaining garden from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday Oct. 22. Following the event, the space will be used daily by the school’s teachers and students for lessons in mathematics, science, literature and other subjects.

The garden will foster “active, hands-on learning,” said Celina Elementary School Principal Starla Martin. “Through group problem-solving activities, students will embrace the unique learning process as well as seeking outcomes. Through engaging their sense of touch, smell, hearing and sight, students will retain the information gained for longer periods.” Fans of the original “The Wizard of Oz” literary series, penned by author L. Frank Baum, as well as the movie will recognize that many of the garden’s features are inspired by the books and scenes from the iconic film. Its sparkling green entrance arbor nods to the gateway of the fabled Emerald City. Once inside, visitors are greeted by a 6-foot-tall stainlesssteel replica of the beloved Tin Man character as they follow a stamped-concrete path replicating the famous Yellow Brick Road.

The centerpiece of the 7,200 square-foot Garden of Oz is a covered outdoor classroom complete with tables and chairs. It is flanked by a bridge, a butterfly garden, a music-making wall, a worm farm and a compost area. The idea for a school garden was conceived in 2014 by Celina Garden Club members Pamela Collins and Dr. Frances Herbert, who wanted to help beautify the campus while serving the club’s mission of being a good steward of the community. “We tout the fact that we are good neighbors,” Collins said, recalling how she pitched the idea for the garden to Celina Garden Club members. “I told them, `We need to give these children something beautiful to look at.’” More importantly, she said, “The community needs this because our children need to learn where their food comes from. So many kids, they just think it comes out of a can or from the

produce department at the supermarket.” With funds raised through its biennial Celina Garden Tour in 2015, the Celina Garden Club was able to provide more than $10,000 in seed money to help set the Garden of Oz project in motion. Collins and Herbert were subsequently named its Lifetime Directors Emerita. Celina Garden Club President Andrea Greenwald said the organization “is honored to gift this garden to the children of Celina.” Herbert, a urologist and the mother of three school-age children, said she envisioned a space that would help expand science lessons for students. “It would get the kids excited about learning about Texas-native plants, farming, gardening, soil, the lifecycle of butterflies and bees - all those things that I think, being a scientist myself, are so interesting and fun,” she said. “It’s a good way to have the kids at that age … be excited about science and have a practical understanding of it.” Mandy Brignon, a first-grade teacher at Celina Elementary School, said her students will likely spend time in the garden observing and recording weather data and tending to the vegetables they’ll grow. “My hope is that the garden will not only serve as a great place for science exploration, but for writing and reading as well,” she said. “It will be nice to take students out on a beautiful day to read or write in our journals.”

The Garden of Oz was built following the principles of permaculture, a type of ecological design and engineering that utilizes environmentally friendly construction and other practices to develop sustainable, selfmaintained habitats and agricultural systems that are modeled after natural ecosystems. The organic garden’s nearly three dozen planter beds will be used to grow fruits, vegetables, flowers and other plants and trees, including many species that are native to the state. The flora will be hydrated in part with rainwater collected in a pair of large onsite storage tanks. In the specially designed rain garden, thirsty plants will absorb a portion of the garden’s wastewater. After digging in the dirt, students will rinse their tools at a dedicated cleaning station and store items in the whimsical “Munchkin House” shed. “We’re literally giving the students a fantasy land where they can really express themselves,” said Jennifer Golden, a Celina Garden Club member who serves as co-chair of the Garden of Oz.

Her company, Golden Construction Services based in Anna, is one of 60 construction contractors and other industry-related firms from throughout North Texas that donated the funds, equipment, materials and labor needed to complete the $150,000 project.

Also donated were gardening tools and other supplies that students and teachers will use during lessons in the garden. Golden was tasked with organizing most of the donors. She also worked with landscape architect Jennifer Thomas to design the Garden of Oz and oversaw its four-month construction process from start to finish. It was similar - although smaller in scale to work Golden did several years ago while designing an award-winning therapeutic garden for use by wounded and recovering military service members at the Warrior and Family Support Center. The facility is part of the San Antonio Military Medical Center at the Fort Sam Houston Army post. The local garden’s “The Wizard of Oz” theme will attract students, Golden said. It also builds upon the idea “that anything is possible. You think of magic and the trials and triumphs (in the movie) and that’s what we’re trying to bring about through the garden. We’re trying to turn it into a destination versus a place to go pull weeds.” Beyond getting students outside and working with their hands, the Garden of Oz may also help boost test scores. Golden said studies have shown studies that students at elementary schools around the nation where educational gardens have been installed tend to outperform others on tests by 15 to 18 percent. “That’s a big number,” she said. keep it healthy and beautiful and attractive for the children to want to come out and learn.” Members will also assist with fundraising efforts benefitting the garden. A retired Celina High School biology teacher, Tingle works directly with educators at Celina Elementary School to retool their lesson plans for use in the outdoor classroom. “Teaching in a garden setting is a new opportunity, so they may need some help adapting their current curriculum,” she explained. Tingle urges anyone who is interested - especially retired workers and grandparents who may have extra leisure time on their hands, as well as previous gardening experience - to join the Friends of the Garden of Oz group by visiting celinagardenofoz.org or the Celina Garden of Oz Facebook page (www.facebook.com/Celina-Gardenof-Oz-1016248145080371/). “The garden can’t possibly exist without community involvement,” she said, “especially people who are passionate about education and providing this kind of learning environment for little ones.”

the Garden of Oz is a welcome addition to the district. “Anything we can do that’s creative and innovative, that gives our kids new experiences, we’re completely in favor of and supportive of,” he said. It also complements Celina ISD’s “new motto and theme … in that we feel like we’re a destination district,” DeMasters said. “The Garden of Oz is a destination to conduct lessons and experiments in cross-curriculum areas where kids can have experiences and do things outside of the realm of a traditional classroom.” Also, that it was built entirely with donations and comes to the district free of charge is “phenomenal,” he said. “You just don’t come across those types of things without there being some sort of impact or cost to the district, but that’s not the case here. It’s tremendous.” Even before students set foot in the garden, the nonprofit Friends of the Garden of Oz group is working behind the scenes in preparation for the facility’s future to “ensure that imagination, knowledge and exploration will grow with Celina,” Garden Club President Greenwald said. Members of the recently formed Friends group, including area residents, business and civic leaders and family members of Celina ISD students, among others, tackle the hands-on maintenance of the garden and its plants, according to its President Kim Tingle. “It’s an organic garden, so we’re going to have to be really observant,” she explained. “We’re going to need a lot of eyes and hands in the garden to

10 Spooktacular Halloween Safety Tips By Alexia Chianis

It’s getting to be that spooky time of year again; it’s almost Halloween. Halloween is that one day of the year you allow your kids to dress up in a scary costume, eat endless candy, and stay up well past their bedtime. But unfortunately, frightening statistics confirm that Halloween is one of the most dangerous nights of the year for our children. To help ensure your little goblins trick or treat extravaganza is as safe as it is entertaining, we’ve put together this list of 10 easy to follow Halloween safety tips.

1. Use caution with glow sticks.

Glow sticks offer great visibility (and let’s be honest, they’re fun) but glow sticks can also be hazardous because their bright colors tempt your children to take a bite. The colorless liquid inside a glow stick is low in toxicity but will likely irritate your child’s skin and eyes. If your child ingests the glow stick liquid, the Carolinas Poison Center recommends that you have your child drink a glass of water, and wipe out his mouth with a wet washcloth (focusing on his tongue and gums). Don’t be shocked if his lips and tongue glow for a few minutes.

2. Test face paint for allergic reaction.

Face paint can transform your child into the character of her dreams, but an allergic reaction will put a swift end to her night of candy grabbing. When selecting face paint, buy a quality product that displays non-toxic designations. A few days before Halloween test the paint on your child’s face according to the directions on the package to be sure it won’t trigger an allergic reaction or other skin irritation. Remember that face paint is preferred over masks that can obstruct your child’s vision. If your child must wear a mask, be sure the mask fits properly and that the eye holes are large enough for her to see clearly.

3. Choose second-hand costumes wisely.

Halloween costume hand-me-downs help save cash, but they are dangerous when they don’t fit your child properly. Your child can trip on a costume that’s too big. If you find a second hand costume that’s the perfect size, check its label to be sure it’s flame-retardant.

4. Even “big kids” need supervision.

Your older kids certainly don’t want you tagging along on Halloween night, but with freedom few safety rules. Talk to your older child about the route they will take and if there are any that are off limits. Make sure they have their cell phone with them and check in with you at regular intervals. If they have a change of plans or get off course, be sure they know you expect them to call you immediately.

5. Don’t take pedestrian safety for granted.

According to State Farm Insurance, twice the number of children are fatally injured on Halloween than on any other day of the year. One quarter of fatalities occur between 6:00p.m. and 7:00 p.m. And although we’re usually most concerned for our youngest children, State Farm statistics show 32 percent of child fatalities are children ages 12 to 15. Remind your kids of general traffic safety rules such as crossing at crosswalks and using sidewalks available, but also make them aware that darting out into the street between parked cars is very dangerous because drivers won’t see them coming.

6. Remind kids of basic safety rules.

Whether you’re escorting your toddler or letting your tween enjoy Halloween on their own, chat with your kids about basic safety rules. Remind them to only approach homes with the lights on, never enter a home, and toss candy that’s not in an original wrapper. Year-round rules like not getting into a car with a stranger bear repeating.

7. Role play scenarios.

Talking with older children about “what ifs” can help both of you feel more comfortable about them trick-or-treating on their own. Ask your child what she’d do if someone stole her candy, dared her to toilet-paper a tree, or a stranger asked her to step inside their home. You can’t prevent these types of situations from happening, but talking about then will help her navigate the challenge with greater confidence.

8. Beware of allergies and choking hazards.

Lots of children have food allergies. If your child is one of them, remind her that you have to check her candy before she eats it. Spread her treats out on the kitchen table and swap out dangerous treats for ones she can enjoy or offer non-food items like inexpensive toys. If you have a toddler, keep a close watch on what that little goblin is putting in his mouth. Hard candy is a notorious choking hazard.

9. Download the FBI’s Child ID app.

As Halloween approaches, there couldn’t be a better time to download the FBI’s Child ID app. It’s free, and in addition to offering you a place to electronically store photos and critical information about your child, it also offers a wealth of information about what to do if your child is missing. We especially appreciate that the app gives you the power to quickly and easily email information about your missing child to authorities.

10. Consider temporary tattoos for safety.

Like a lot of parents, you might not be a big fan of temporary tattoos, but this special Halloween safety tattoo from SafetyTat can help keep your child safe should he or she get lost. Fill in your contact information on the SafetyTat website and you’ll receive your child’s custom tattoo (displaying your phone number) in the mail.
