From the Desk of Rick DeMasters In theory, the month of October should bring an end to the blistering heat of our Texas summer months, and even though we live in an area not prone to arctic type conditions, a drop in the temperature finds us all looking forward to autumn colors, hayrides, apple cider and everything pumpkin. Below, you will find a few of the many things that will be happening throughout the district and our community during the month of October. For the second year, Celina ISD celebrates College Awareness Day on the first Wednesday of each month throughout the school year. Our students, faculty, and community members are encouraged to wear their favorite college t-shirt. From the youngest of our Bobcats to our graduating seniors, our students understand the importance of continuing their education at the university level. Many of our students will be volunteering their time at ParkFest, sponsored by the City of Celina to be held at Old Celina Park on Saturday, October 14th. Hundreds of vendors from food to clothing and local artists

will be on hand for your shopping pleasures. The CHS School Choir and local country artists will perform on the main stage. Several of our CHS Thespians will be on hand in the children’s area dressed up as favorite storybook characters and the petting zoo is always a treat for the young and old. Celina ISD campuses will be closed to students on Monday October 16th, for what is normally referred to as Fair Day. This is a day set aside for students to enjoy the State Fair of Texas located in downtown Dallas at Fair Park. District faculty and staff members will be involved in professional development workshops and will be holding parent/teacher conferences during the day. At the end of the week on Friday, October 20th, we will celebrate CHS 2017 Homecoming. The theme for the 2017 Homecoming Parade is “Together As One.” This builds upon the District theme of “one,” and brings together all that contribute to the success of our students. From one city to one team, we are and always will be one family. The District will have Early Release on that Friday, so that students, faculty, and community members can make their way to the town square for the annual Homecoming parade, followed by a spirited pep rally for our

The 2017 theme for the week is “Your Future Is Key, So Stay Drug Free!” Our counselors will be sending more information home to let you know about all of the fun activities scheduled for our campuses during Red Ribbon Week. Tickets are on sale now for Celina Park Fest 2017, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, October 14, 2017 at Old Celina Park, 12670 FM 428, in Celina. The family friendly festival will feature live music from chart-topping acts, more than 100 food and merchandise vendors, and a free Kids’ Zone filled with massive inflatable attractions and activities. This popular annual event, which last year drew thousands of attendees from throughout North Texas and surrounding areas, will be presented rain or shine. General admission tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 4-17, military members and seniors (ages 3 and younger admitted free), and are available online at www.celinaparkfest.com. Tickets will also be sold at the gate on the day of the event (cash, credit/debit cards accepted). Specially priced tickets are available now on Groupon.com. Parking is free. For 15 years, Celina Park Fest (previously known as the Celina Balloon Festival) has celebrated the sights and sounds of the Fall season while nodding to the small-town traditions for which the burgeoning burg of Celina is best known. Boasting an expanded footprint this year at Old Celina Park, it is the city’s largest annual community event. Celina Park Fest 2017 will kick off with a performance by the Celina High School Choir, followed by high-energy sets throughout the day from a slate of prominent North Texas musicians including Crystal Yates, Chaz Marie, Dean & Vanzant and the Boxcar Bandits. Once the sun sets, country singersongwriter Max Stalling will take the stage before a rockin’ concert by Red Dirt-music recording star Jason Boland & The Stragglers.
by the Martin Marietta company. It will occupy an entire ball field at Old Celina Park, where massive inflatables and bounce houses will be open to young jumpers free of charge. Costumed characters will be on hand to pose for photos with children and their grownups. A climbing wall, petting zoo and human hamster ball attraction will also be featured in the space, along with a special hands-on activity area sponsored by Home Depot. From meats to sweets, a delectable assortment of delicious foods and beverages will be available for purchase, including gourmet candy and caramel apples, funnel cakes, wood-fired pizza and handcrafted oldfashioned sodas. A fixture at Celina Park Fest for the past decade, Conway Corndogs, returns this year to serve its jumbo corndogs and thirstquenching lemonade to hungry crowds. Festival goers can also shop the wide array of innovative products and services that will be featured at the 2017 Celina Park Fest. Hailing from Aubrey, dessert-maker The Colonel’s Wife will offer a selection of its packaged, handmade cookies and breads. Check out the latest must-have colors and styles from beauty and fashion staples Lipsense, Mary Kay Cosmetics and LuLaRoe. “This year’s Park Fest is going to be phenomenal. It’s going to be an exciting day for families to come out, celebrate and have some fun,” Cromwell said, thanking the city of Celina and the Centurion American real-estate development company for their sponsorship of the event.
“The bands are excited to play at Park Fest this year,” said Melissa Cromwell, president of the Greater Celina Chamber of Commerce which produces the event that serves as a fundraiser for the organization. She encourages attendees to bring blankets and lawn chairs and sit near the stage, which will be adjacent to the popular Bud Light beer tent. “It’ll be a great place to put a picnic down and listen to some terrific music.”
About the Greater Celina Chamber of Commerce: The Greater Celina Chamber of Commerce is comprised of a diverse cross section of businesses, individuals, nonprofit organizations and professionals who are aligned to help promote local products and services, while supporting the collective needs and interests of its members through networking events, a website directory, community events and social media, among others. Fall
Seasonal Treats for
C
risp fall days call for flavorful desserts that warm you from the inside out. There’s no better way to capture the flavor of fall than with dishes that celebrate traditional seasonal favorites like cinnamon, spice and tart, juicy apples.
Easy Apple Pie Bars
These desserts are perfect for fall, and a secret ingredient makes them quick and easy so you have plenty of free time to work up an appetite and earn an extra bite (or two). Apple butter is more than just a spread for toast; it’s a versatile ingredient that can enhance your favorite recipes. With Musselman’s Apple Butter, made the old-fashioned way for perfect texture and a deep, rich flavor, you can make it simple to satisfy your craving for a taste of autumn at its best.
Nonstick cooking spray 7 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and diced 1 cup Musselman’s Apple Butter 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract, divided 1/2 cup brown sugar 2 frozen pie crusts, defrosted 1 egg white 2 tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 cup powdered sugar 2 tablespoons milk
Find more fall tips and recipes perfect for sharing with your family at musselmans.com.
Caramel Crumble Bars 1 box (15 1/4 ounces) yellow cake mix, dry 1/2 cup butter, softened, plus 2 tablespoons, divided 3/4 cup Musselman’s Apple Butter, plus 3 tablespoons 1 egg 1 package (11 ounces) caramels, unwrapped 2/3 cup walnuts, chopped 2/3 cup flaked coconut, sweetened 2 tablespoons butter, melted
Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 1 hour Servings: 20
Heat oven to 350 F. Grease 9-by-13-inch pan with nonstick cooking spray. Place diced apples in large mixing bowl. Add apple butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla and brown sugar. Mix until apples are evenly coated. Place one pie crust in bottom of greased pan. Slowly stretch out crust to cover pan’s bottom. Cut some edges off, if necessary. Spread apple filling evenly over crust.
Heat oven to 350 F. Grease 13-by-9-inch baking pan.
With rolling pin, roll second crust to make it same size as pan. Place second crust on top of apple pie filling and tuck down edges to cover.
With electric mixer on low speed, beat dry cake mix and 1/2 cup softened butter until mixture is crumbly. Spoon 1 cup cake mix mixture into medium bowl; set aside.
To make topping: In small bowl, whisk egg white until foamy and brush over crust. In another bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon, and sprinkle evenly over crust.
Add 3/4 cup apple butter and egg to remaining mixture. Beat on medium speed until smooth and creamy.
Bake 50-60 minutes until crust is golden brown. Remove from oven and cool slightly before cutting.
Spread evenly into pan. Bake 20 minutes, or until starting to brown and top is set.
To make glaze: In small bowl, combine powdered sugar, milk and remaining vanilla, and whisk until smooth. Drizzle over cooled bars and serve.
Place caramels, 2 tablespoons butter and remaining apple butter in microwavable bowl. Microwave on high 3-4 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds until smooth and melted. Pour caramel mixture evenly over partially baked crust. If caramel has cooled and set, microwave 1 minute until soft and pourable. Combine walnuts, coconut and 2 tablespoons melted butter with reserved cake mix mixture. Mix until crumbly. Break up topping and sprinkle evenly over caramel. Bake 16-18 minutes, or until topping is starting to brown. Cool completely before cutting into bars.

Celina Education Foundation C.A.R.E.ing for Education Excellence Since 1992
A New Direction: The Celina Education Foundation By Jill Joseph Roza
The year 1992 brought about an organization aimed at not only rewarding academic excellence at the then three Celina ISD campuses, but also encouraged our Celina High School students to further their educational pursuits after their high school graduation festivities had concluded. For those of us who were here in those early days, the Celina Association for Renaissance Excellence, or C.A.R.E. for short, was created to support academic achievements throughout the entire district. Jan Miller, a former Celina ISD Teacher, founded the organization in 1992 and through her initial efforts, C.A.R.E. has blossomed into a 501 (c) 3 tax exempt non-profit organization that goes out of their way each and every year to help all of our students succeed. Families new to Celina may be under the impression that the C.A.R.E. organization revolves solely around scholarships given out each May to CHS graduating seniors. The organization did give out $35,000 in scholarships this past year, but they also donated funds totaling over $33,000 at the campus level. The organization contributes money annually to each campus to be used for academic incentives that reward strong academic performance and improvement. Examples of items purchased with C.A.R.E. funds include; iPads, start-up costs for STEM/STEAM Labs, library books, Teen Leadership field trips, math manipulatives, and materials to create Media Center collaborative work stations. Every item purchased with C.A.R.E. funds goes directly to our campuses to provide educational experiences and/or materials that are in the best interest of that particular campus. Today, many organizations like C.A.R.E. are finding themselves caught in a transitional phase from those initial steps taken over twenty years ago to evolving into organizations aimed at maximizing their impact in today’s world. In order to expand upon the advantages of an ever-changing climate that is at our doorstep, the C.A.R.E. Executive Board members were faced with the task of how to respect the past of the organization, while at the same time, seek access to new resources. Corporate grants would provide
16

our students with multiple tools at the classroom level, which in turn, would open more doors and opportunities upon graduation. Board members began with restructuring the name due to the fact that many of the businesses and organizations called upon were unclear of what was meant by “renaissance excellence.” By simplifying the name to “The Celina Education Foundation,” businesses and corporate sponsors new to the area can immediately identify with the main objective behind the organization. The next task was the logo to signify the change within the organization. A navigational compass was created with the directional signage replaced with the letters spelling out CARE. The compass signifies the unified direction from our past, while at the same time points to our future. Fundraising is a main focus for the organization. The foundation is fully funded by contributions and relies on businesses and families in and around our community, including our schools for financial support. With unprecedented growth headed in our direction, Celina Education Foundation President Heather Cunningham and Executive Board members reached out to Chamber of Commerce President Melissa Cromwell for help in seeking and securing grants from corporate sponsors that are moving into the area. Partnering with these sponsors will help support educational needs on our campuses that will benefit not only our students, but our teachers as well. One of the largest fundraisers that the foundation has hosted for many years, is the Ladies Brunch and Auction, which raises thousands of dollars for scholarships and educational tools for our campuses. This year, the CEF Executive Board decided to replace the brunch with an evening Gala that will not only be for the ladies, but for men as well. The Gala will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at the Rock Creek Ranch. Dust off your boots because it will be a night filled with live music, dancing, food, and auction items that you will be stomping to own! And the best part is that the proceeds will help Celina ISD students, not only in the classroom, but in all academic endeavors!
With growth comes change, but change is not easy in a place where traditions are held sacred. The Celina School District understands the work and dedication that the Celina Education Foundation has put in place to respect its past. At the same time, it is also very evident that the organization is expanding upon the foundation that was set years ago in order to represent the future of Celina. In the coming year, the organization will also be creating a database of Celina Alumni with the hopes of hosting future alumni events that seek to involve those that benefitted and furthered their educational aspirations by being chosen to receive a Celina Education Foundation scholarship. These changes will open more doors to our students and will give them the ability to fulfill their dreams. Walking in the footsteps of the pioneers that came before, gives present day members the courage to aim the foundation’s compass at a future that is filled with abounding opportunities that will provide present day students of Celina ISD and future generations with the tools that support academic achievement and will foster a desire to forge their own paths to pursue educational excellence.
