Creating a Stable Back-to-School Routine for Children If there’s one thing parents know, it’s children thrive on routines. When it seems like everything is changing, routines can create stability. “When children know what to expect, they don’t feel powerless and out of control,” said Rashelle Chase from KinderCare Learning Centers’ education team. “Children like to plan just as much as adults do. When they know what will happen next, they can set their expectations.” Routines can also help children regulate their emotions – and avoid meltdowns or outbursts – because their days follow a pattern and are predictable. There’s typically a sense of comfort in knowing what comes next. Whether your child’s back-to-school routine includes actually going to school or distance learning, consider these tips to help create a sense of stability. SET A SCHEDULE Talk with your child about his or her school day and how it will be different. Work together to come up with ways you can both ease into the new routine, whether your child is attending school part time, learning at home or going to a childcare center or program. Remember, little things can help create a sense of routine and stability. Even if your child is learning at home and could stay in pajamas all day, something as small as getting dressed in school clothes and brushing teeth before sitting down for lessons can signal it’s time to study. BE FLEXIBLE The things that make school fun – whatever that may be for your child – aren’t at home. However, there are some things you can do at home, like eat a snack while studying or play with toys, that you cannot do at school that make learning more enjoyable. Be sure to build breaks into your 6 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com
child’s day. Knowing there will be something fun after the next lesson can give your child something to look forward to and help him or her settle down to complete the task at hand. Plus, those breaks can be an opportunity for parents to get some work done, too. Talk with your child and with his or her teachers: Perhaps those 30 minutes of reading don’t have to be done midmorning when your child is restless. Instead, maybe your family could do 30 minutes of reading before bed when your child is calmer. TALK IT OUT Nearly everyone is experiencing strong emotions right now whether it’s in reaction to an abnormal start to the school year or other factors that impact daily life. The difference is adults can contextualize a situation and adjust their reactions. Children haven’t yet mastered those skills, so they react based on whatever nugget of information they have. Home is a safe place for most children, which means they know they can express their feelings freely. That may mean slamming laptops or books down in frustration, yelling or using hurtful words. Your child might be upset because he or she doesn’t understand the schoolwork or might be afraid for safety or the safety of loved ones during these uncertain times. Talk with your child about his or her feelings and work together to find healthy ways to express those emotions, like taking three deep breaths or using a physical activity to vent, instead of keeping those feelings pent-up inside. Difference and change don’t have to mean chaos and uncertainty. With a bit of thought and a stable routine, parents can help their children have an enjoyable, productive school year. Life & Luxury Magazine Community
Celina Connected is about Taking Care of One Another Our theme this year is “Celina Connected,” which speaks to our connections within our relationships and our commitment to supporting one another. As our staff began connecting with both their in-person and virtual students this year, a new sense of community began to develop. We all knew this year, more than any other school year, would be an extremely unique return to school, and our community has been so supportive of one another as colleagues, classmates, and families worked through new problems. Our city leaders have also stepped in to help serve our schools and our teachers. When repeated internet and power outages in the city impacted our campuses, Mayor Sean Terry, and City Manager Jason Laumer, immediately assembled their troops to reconnect our virtual students to their teachers and classmates. Celina Connected indeed!
We appreciate our families monitoring the health of their children and keeping students home if they are experiencing illnesses that can affect other students. All the protocols and procedures implemented within our schools are for naught unless we work together and do all we can to keep illnesses from ever coming into our schools. Celina ISD and the City of Celina have a long history of persevering through whatever has come our way and seeing not the problem before us but seeing instead the opportunity. What has always been a strength for our city and our district is the greatest calling in our “Celina Connected” theme: True connection is about taking care of one another.
As we have stated in previous communications to our parents, the district is committed to providing a campus environment that follows all safety protocols for the health of our students and faculty. In addition to the many procedures in place on each of our campuses, our buildings receive extensive cleaning throughout each day and overnight. While these protocols and procedures are effective, they cannot completely stop the spread of the COVID virus, and we have already had active cases on several campuses. Our nursing staff continues to follow guidelines set by the state and reports all positive cases as they are confirmed to our district. As part of our commitment to clear communication with our families, the district has added a “COVID-19 Dashboard” to our website, which includes updated counts of active cases at each campus. The dashboard will be updated often as new active cases emerge. Heading into allergy and flu seasons, and as general illnesses occur, we know that more and more students will likely have to remain home due to COVID-like symptoms. We recognize the negative impact this can have on a family, but we are committed to following the guidelines of state and local health agencies to maximize the safety of all students and staff.

Celina Public Library Adds Experience to Youth Services Staff Latest Addition Brings Varied Background to Position Counting on slightly more than a dozen years of experience at top-level library systems in Texas and Arizona, Duane Wagner has joined the Celina Public Library as Youth Services Librarian. “Duane brings a wide range of excellent experience to the library staff,” says Library Director Linda Shaw. “When we combine his experience, his educational credentials, and his unbridled enthusiasm, the entire Celina community, especially the children, youth and young adults, will benefit in ways that may surprise us. Duane will definitely be a difference-maker.” In his position, Wagner will develop plans, proposals, and projects that will complement the existing Storytime offerings by the library. He will also be instrumental in conducting a variety of related opportunities for children on a weekly basis. He will monitor and maintain available literature aimed at children and young adults, as well as assist with library item acquisition and withdrawal of the reading inventory in those categories. An important part of his role will be working closely with school librarians and staff to ensure that the library remains an important resource for students and teachers. 12 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com
Wagner will also become an active advocate for the larger reading community, seeking ways to partner with organizations serving youth to promote positive change. As with all library personnel, he will be constantly available to provide advice to patrons of all ages looking for fiction and nonfiction titles. Prior to joining the Celina staff, Wagner held a similar position at the Flower Mound Library for seven years, shepherding the Youth Services Division through a period of exceptional growth. Before arriving in Flower Mound, he spent five years as a Library Associate and Library Program Instructor for the Pima County Public Library in Tucson, Arizona. A member of the American and Texas Library Associations, the Association for Library Service to Children, and the Young Adult Library Services Organization, Wagner earned a Master of Arts in English and Creative Writing from Southern New Hampshire University as well as a Master of Arts in Information Resources and Library Science from the University of Arizona.

Keeping Kids Connected for Learning in Celina The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to rethink how we interact, do business, and school our children. Internet connectivity is playing a critical role in allowing us to move forward so, what happens when our internet fails? The Celina ISD is offering both virtual and in-person learning at each campus this year. Lykins Elementary reported to the City of Celina on August 21st that they had been experiencing intermittent connectivity over the past week. As of early the morning of the 21st, they were completely down. Once the city became aware of the situation, City Manager, Jason Laumer, immediately deployed the city’s IT department to assist. As the school’s service provider, Suddenlink, worked to restore service, the Celina City IT Department, in partnership with the Celina ISD Superintendent, Tom Maglisceau, went to work quickly to find a solution to get the school back online. The city immediately provided 18 Verizon MiFi Hot Spots and contacted the Verizon Crisis Response Team to provide a secondary source of internet to the school. Superintendent Tom Maglisceau stated that he was extremely appreciative of the outpour of response from the city and the Verizon Crisis Response Team. This was a perfect example of the city’s promise to keep #LifeConnected, through their continued service to the community.

5 Seasonal DIY Home Improvement Projects T
he calendar pages may be turning fast, but it’s not too late to do some work around the house. Now is the time to wrap up home improvement projects before the weather turns too cold. Consider these five easy DIY tasks that can set you up for a warm, safe and pest-free fall: PERFORM ROUTINE HVAC MAINTENANCE Heating and cooling systems need regular service to operate at peak efficiency. Some tasks are best left to the pros, but there is plenty you can do on your own to minimize expenses and ensure your unit maintains its performance level. With the breaker and gas off, wipe the exterior of your furnace with a damp rag then remove the access door and vacuum the burners, base and blower compartment. Remove and clean the blower with a vacuum and small brush then use a drinking straw to blow dust off the pilot. Also inspect the flame sensor, drive belt and air filter, and clean or replace as needed.
16 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com
AIR SEAL DRAFTY AREAS The gaps around windows and door frames give unwanted air an open invitation into a home. However, you can quickly and easily block the flow of air for greater comfort and lower energy bills. If the doors and windows are already finished, start by removing the trim. Prep the area by removing dust and debris. Using a quality sealant like Great Stuff Window & Door Insulating Foam Sealant, apply the foam to fill in about 50% of the gap around the window or door and framework, allowing room for the foam to expand. Wipe away imperfections and let sit 10-15 minutes until it’s no longer tacky. Gently press the expanded foam into the gap using a putty knife. CHECK FOR DAMAGE TO HARDSCAPING Walkways, patios and decks are all susceptible to wear that can lead to tripping hazards or allow rain, snow and ice to seep in and create larger problems. Take time to thoroughly assess these hardscape features and identify issues like loose stones and cracks in concrete that need repairs. Securing materials, filling cracks and patching problem areas can help prevent further damage during the colder months while restoring aesthetic appeal.
Local Expertise Innovative Approach Real Integrity S TA C Y C AT E INSPECT YOUR HOME’S EXTERIOR Many elements of your home serve essential roles in protecting your safety, regulating your home’s efficiency and preventing damage. It’s important to regularly check your roof for signs it needs repaired, such as missing or cracked shingles or noticeable sagging. Gutters can also accumulate a great deal of debris from falling leaves. Clearing these before cooler temperatures set in can help ensure rain has a clear path away from your house, protecting the walls and foundation. Also pay attention to other elements like paint that may require periodic updates to maintain its protective function. ELIMINATE ENTRY POINTS FOR PESTS When temperatures start dropping, you’re likely to see some movement with creatures who want to enjoy the comfort of your home. Make it clear they’re not welcome by sealing up places they may be creeping in. A solution like Great Stuff Pestblock Insulating Foam Sealant lets you fill gaps and openings with a quick bead of foam. If a rodent has an established pathway, try using a combination of steel wool and the foam to deter it from gnawing through the barrier.

Long Blooming Perennials: Add Impact
to Your Garden with Repeat Bloomers M after year. However, that doesn’t mean that you can plant them once any gardeners like perennial flower plants because they return year
and forget about them. Perennials require regular maintenance to look and perform their best. Staking, pruning, deadheading, dividing and pest control are a few of the gardening chores you can expect to enjoy when growing perennials.
To get the most bang from your buck, be sure to include some long blooming and repeat blooming perennial flowers in your garden design. Large blocks of color add impact to a garden and the best way to achieve that is with long blooming perennial flowers. Here are a few of my favorites: COREOPSIS (TICKSEED) USDA Zones 3 - 9 - Bloom Span: 3+ Months Coreopsis are undemanding plants, but short lived. Either allows them to self-seed or divide the plants every 2-3 years and replant the newer, outer sections. Flower buds form all along the stems, making deadheading a time-consuming challenge. Once the initial buds have completed blooming, sheer the plants back by 1/3 to encourage new flower buds. GOOD CHOICES: Coreopsis verticillata ‘Zagreb’, C.v. ‘Golden Showers’, C. grandiflora ‘Early Sunrise’ DIANTHUS (PINKS) USDA Zones 3 - 9 - Bloom Span: 4+ Months While most Dianthus have a long natural period of bloom, many will rebloom with some deadheading. Several varieties are also evergreen and make nice edging plants. Dianthus does well in any well-drained soil, though it prefers a slight alkalinity. They don’t tend to live very long and should be divided or seeded regularly. GOOD CHOICES: Dianthus gratianopolitanus ‘Bath’s Pink’, D. g. ‘Cheddar Pink’, D. deltoids (Maiden Pink) ECHINACEA PURPUREA (CONEFLOWER) USDA Zones 3 - 9 - Bloom Span: 3-4 Months Having a long bloom period is just one of Echinacea’s many attributes. Coneflowers are extremely drought tolerant; attract birds and butterflies and the intense color ads punch to any garden. The tall stalks are selfsupporting; unless they’ve received so much water, they become floppy. They require good drainage and full sun. Deadheading will prolong the bloom period. Although Echinacea is slow to spread, division is the best way to get the cultivar you want. The seed heads can be left on through 18 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com
the winter and will provide a treat for neighborhood birds. GOOD CHOICES: Echinacea purpurea ‘Magnus”, E.p. ‘Fragrant Angel’, E. “Art’s Pride’ GAILLARDIA (BLANKET FLOWER) USDA Zones 2 - 9 - Bloom Span: 4-5 Months Daisies on caffeine. Gaillardia’s yellow petals around a burgundy center are impossible to ignore in a garden. All they ask is full sun and they will keep on blooming all summer. Too much shade and the stems begin to flop. In most cases, deadheading is not necessary for continual bloom, but it can make the plants look tidier. Gaillardia is another short-lived perennial and should be divided or seeded often. GOOD CHOICES: Gaillardia x grandiflora, Gaillardia ‘Goblin’ (dwarf), G. ‘Burgundy’, G. ‘Monarch’ KNIPHOFIA (RED HOT POKER) USDA Zones: 5 - 9 - Bloom Span: 3+ Months The spiky, bottle-brush flowers of Kniphofia are beacons for hummingbirds. Although they look like tough customers, Kniphofia actually requires a bit of winter protection in cooler zones. They are also a bit fussy about liking moist conditions in the summer, but well-drained soil for the winter months. Full sun is generally necessary for ample blooms. Kniphofia does not divide or transplant well, although you can usually get away with removing and replanting the young side shoots of the plants. GOOD CHOICES: Any of the hybrids. Kniphofia ‘’Primrose Beauty’ is especially hardy. LIATRIS (GAYFEATHER, BLAZING STAR) USDA Zones 3 - 9 - Bloom Span: 4 Months Liatris are easy to grow and texturally unusual. The thin, spiky leaves jut off the stems all the way to where the rosy-purple flower spikes begin. Unlike most spiky flowers, Liatris blooms from the top down. Liatris can handle just about any type of soil, but the richer the soil, the more likely they’ll need staking. They’ll grow in full sun or partial shade. Liatris is long lived and doesn’t often require division. They will self-seed, but generally don’t take over. GOOD CHOICES: Liatris spicata (Spike Gayfeather) comes in white, pink and shades of purple RUDBECKIA (BLACK-EYED SUSAN) USDA Zones: 3 - 9 - Bloom Span:
3 Months Rudbeckia are at home everywhere and many are native to various parts of North America. They prefer well-drained, somewhat lean soil and full sun. Deadheading will prolong bloom and cut Rudbeckia flowers will last a long time in water. With their flat landing pad petals, they are attractive to butterflies and the seeds will be eaten by the birds during the winter. Relatively long lived, Rudbeckias can be easily multiplied by division. GOOD CHOICES: Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Goldsturm”
Small Animal Medicine and Surgery
SCABIOSA (PIN CUSHION FLOWER) USDA Zones 3 - 9 - Bloom Span: 3+ Months Scabiosa is a unique looking plant with a low growing rosette of narrow leaves and a profusion of gangly stems topped by pincushion flowers. They are relatively easily grown in average soil and full sun. Deadheading is a must for long bloom and general appearance. Divide plants every 3-4 years. You can also root the secondary stems you will see coming from the base of the plants. GOOD CHOICES: Scabiosa caucasica ‘Butterfly Blue’, S. c. ‘Pink Mist’

Now my next problem…I have a spot that is right outside our living area window near the front entry that is not to large but everyone sees it coming into our home or leaving our home. Not so long ago you wrote an article about focal points in small gardens. So that got me really interested in this spot. Can you please look at the picture I sent you and give me a couple of WOW options in your professional opinion? Thank you so much! – Catherine and Tim C. in Celina

ith many families spending more time than usual at home, scratch cooking trends are popular among home chefs. From homemade sourdough to elaborate multi-course dinners, the kitchen has become a place for creativity for many. However, since this season brings all sorts of fun and outdoor activities, busy families may be looking for ways to spend less time in the kitchen without compromising on quality or flavor. Try to work smarter, not harder, and let your local grocery store do some of the heavy lifting. Starting with pre-packaged salads, casseroles, fresh-baked breads or prepared items from the deli case, like a rotisserie chicken, opens an array of possibilities for quick family meals. For example, Signature Cafe and Signature Select, available exclusively at Albertsons and Safeway stores, can be your go-to for meal solutions, and you can find these products at a value compared to many leading national brands without giving up the quality you crave. With products available across the entire store, you can find easy-to-implement recipe hacks the whole family can enjoy. Serving up a tasty and comforting dinner can be as easy as mixing together fresh ingredients like pre-made macaroni and cheese, rotisserie chicken, frozen broccoli and topping your dish with cracker crumbs in this Chicken and Broccoli Mac and Cheese. You’ll have food on the table in less than 30 minutes and more time to spend with family and friends. With the resources available at your neighborhood store, you can build restaurant-quality Spicy Chicken Sandwiches with Nashville-Style Dressing at home by visiting the deli department for fried chicken and swinging by the bakery for a loaf of European-style bread. Crunchy fried chicken, cool lettuce, crisp pickles and spicy dressing including a handful of pantry staples make for the perfect flavor and texture combination.

COZY SPORTY CUTE Athleisure‘s moment is still going strong, and your Stylist is here for it. Pick a trend: animal prints, moto jackets, puffers—it’s now been rendered as deliciously comfortable as humanly possible by making it in soft knits, velour and other touchable fabrications. Choose a matching set of joggers and sweatshirt in a wild leopard print, a tank dress in soft jersey, or a cowl neck tunic, and tackle your day looking as good as you feel.

COMMIT TO KNITS Acquiring a new sweater (or 2, or 3!) is one of the fall season’s most important style scores. Luckily, your Stylist has access to a season’s worth of knits that will take you from work to weekend while looking great. Almost every fall outfit, from leggings and a tee to a curve-skimming dress, could be improved upon with a cardigan—just the thing to add coziness or to finish a look. You’ll find them in fun prints, including ultra-feminine themes or on-trend big cats. When it comes to pullovers, stripes are here to stay— look for them in season-right earth tones in v-neck or crew neck styles.
