Stress Less on Your Next Family Vacation: 6 Tips for a Laid-Back Getaway A vacation is all about getting away and taking a break from the pressures of daily life. Some smart planning and the use of handy travel apps can help ensure your next adventure is a stress-free success. Create a Travel Buffer When booking your trip, plan an extra day or two on the front and back ends of your travel itinerary. This provides you with optimal time to finalize preparations, organize your packing and avoid last-minute scrambles. On the return trip, the added day gives you some cushion, so you don’t have to stress about getting back to work if there are travel delays. You’ll also have a chance to unpack, unwind and settle back into your home before diving back into your daily grind. Get Smart About Saving One easy way to take the stress out of vacation planning is to use digital resources to save time and money. An option like a sightseeing pass from Go City offers savings on attractions and activities. A single pass grants access to multiple iconic landmarks and unmissable experiences in more than 25 cities across four continents. For example, in San Antonio you can take advantage of a Natural Bridge Caverns discovery package, or in New York City, you’ll be able to access the iconic and family-friendly exhibits at the Empire State Building. Know When Less is More Overpacking may seem like a strategy for reducing stress, since you’ll be prepared for whatever comes your way. However, many travelers find the opposite is true. Packing light means you’re more agile when it comes to transportation and have fewer things to keep track of or worry about losing. An added benefit: with fewer wardrobe options, you can focus your attention where it really belongs – enjoying your destination. 8 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com
Keep Plans Loose A rigid agenda only causes angst. The reality of travel is that you’re likely to, somehow or someway, get off schedule and fall behind. The ripple effect can quickly throw off an entire day, so a better bet is to keep plans flexible. With Go City’s mobile-based passes and flexible plan-as-you-go capabilities, travelers have the freedom to set their own schedules. It’s no problem if you decide to linger over breakfast on your visit to Los Angeles; the whale watching adventure will be there when you’re ready. If you decide to make a stop at the beach on your San Diego getaway, no worries. You’ll still be able to scan your pass for kayaking later that day or even following days. Prioritize Sleep and Relaxing Activities You may be tempted to make the most of every moment of your trip but allowing ample down time to rest and recharge helps keep everyone feeling fresh and ready to tackle each new activity with enthusiasm. Being tired takes the joy out of traveling, and it can lead to cranky meltdowns among the littlest travelers (and sometimes the bigger ones, too). That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to take a nap every single day, but you might consider alternating extra busy days with more laid-back activities, so you don’t find yourself running on empty. Have Contingency Plans At home, things don’t always go according to plan, so you shouldn’t expect them to when you’re on the road. While planning for your trip, do some research on backup activities you can do if your original plans fall apart. If rain hampers your day at the amusement park, knowing you can easily access tickets to the indoor aquarium or family-friendly museum nearby can save the day. Use the same mindset when planning for your accommodations and meals. Overbooking and extended wait times won’t foil you if you have alternatives in mind. Discover more ways to do what you want, when you want on your stressfree vacation at GoCity.com.

Financial Tips for Parents to Teach Their Children Children often dream of the day they can call themselves grown-ups, but few look forward to – let alone think about – the financial realities of independence. It’s never too early to start teaching your children how to save money and spend responsibly. “As parents, our job is to set our children up for success,” Bank of America’s Head of Deposit Products Erin McCullen said. “Giving our kids a strong foundation of financial skills like budgeting and saving is a key part in ensuring they thrive as adults and can concentrate on the things they love.” Consider these financial tips from McCullen: Establish a Budget Budgeting is a lifelong skill. Teaching young adults how to budget can help them plan spending, save money, create goals and address financial anxiety. According to a Bank of America survey, 52% of Americans said they didn’t start budgeting until they began their first full-time job. If your kids are on the younger side, they likely don’t have a steady income, but you can still help them practice budgeting with allowances or gifts from relatives or friends. Keep it simple: teach them to track the money they receive and separate it into spend-now and spend-later categories. Later, when you’re helping your kids create an adult budget, you’ll need to expand those categories to track expenses like housing costs and groceries. From there, measure these categories against their total monthly income. Ideally, they should have more money coming in than going out. This process can help identify must-have vs. want-to-have purchases while highlighting areas to cut back on spending or finding room to save. 10 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com
Save Regularly and Consistently Making consistent, automatic contributions to a savings account can create a mindset that will be valuable as your children get older. “It is never too early to open a savings account,” McCullen said. “Even if your children don’t yet have any bills or financial obligations, teach them to set aside some of the money from their allowance or even gifts from family or friends. Helping children learn to save early-on, even for a small purchase, can help them develop a consistent savings habit over time.” Young adults should also consider programs like Keep the Change, which helps build savings automatically by rounding up debit card purchases to the nearest dollar amount and transferring the change from a checking account to a savings account. Make a Finance Checklist Young adults have a lot on their minds at the end of their final semester at school. As they begin to transition from student life to the working world, one way to help them stay on track is to prepare a checklist of things to do before they graduate and start their jobs. This list can include creating a budgeting and tracking strategy, opening a savings account to begin setting aside money from future paychecks or checking in with a financial planner to discuss transitions and what’s to come. Taking time now to teach your children strong financial habits can help them develop lifelong financial skills and prepare them for their next adventure. The healthy habits they build today can help carry them to tomorrow and beyond.
Emphasize the Importance of Safe Credit Young adulthood is the right time to begin building credit because establishing good credit takes time. Building credit from a young age can help pave the way for major purchases and life moments, since credit impacts future living arrangements, the ability to purchase a car and even employment opportunities. Teach your children about the steps they can take to start building credit like planning their credit card usage, never spending outside their means and paying off their credit card bills on-time and in-full. They can also earn rewards while spending by ensuring their credit card rewards their spending. An option like the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card offers flexibility to earn rewards in the category of your choice and can help maximize rewards while building credit.

FINANCIAL LESSONS AT EVERY AGE From preschool through college, every stage of school is designed to prepare kids for life-long success but learning about finances is one area that can be especially impactful for children in the long term. Consider these ways kids can learn about money throughout childhood as recommended by the experts at Bank of America: Elementary School Focus on basics like saving small change and planning how to spend it. As kids begin to learn fundamental math, you can introduce them to the concept of making a spending plan. Apply these lessons to toys or gifts they want and teach them to set aside money until they have enough to buy the toy of their dreams. Middle School
Broken & Fogged Window Glass Energy Efficient Replacement Glass Framed/Frameless Shower Enclosures Mirrors and Table Tops Solar Screens and Bug Screens Family Owned with 25+ Years Experience
Those early mathematical lessons around spending can be expanded to include real-life decision making and budget creation, including what should be accounted for and considered before making a purchase. Before children go to the mall with their friends, highlight the thought process involved in spending before they make impulse purchases. High School As adulthood begins to draw nearer, it’s worth exploring the fundamentals of credit scores, credit cards, investing, saving for retirement, homeownership and more so that, upon graduation, teens can start putting those lessons into practice. High school seniors should also educate themselves on student loans, as debt often becomes a reality for those who attend college and understanding the facts can help them make more informed choices.
WAYNE BARTLEY
Bonus tip: If your high schoolers have jobs, even if it’s just part-time, it can be helpful to discuss taxes and how to manage receiving consistent income. It can guide them in creating balanced and accurate budgets in the future. College Build credit by opening a credit card account to help achieve goals later in life, such as purchasing a home. With a career just a few years away (or less), college is also a smart time to begin reading into the basics of 401(k)s, starting an emergency fund or even learning the basics of investing.

5 Tips for Remodeling in Today’s Market In the aftermath of the COVID-19 lockdown, labor shortages and access to certain products affects numerous industries, including remodeling. Even so, after extra time at home and delays caused by the pandemic, there is high demand for home renovation projects. If you’re planning a home remodel or construction project, consider these tips from professional remodelers to avoid frustration and ensure your vision comes to life. DO RESEARCH AND PLAN AHEAD Mapping out your project early and thoroughly can help you avoid delays. This is especially important when it comes to materials, said John Brown of Bliffert Lumber and Hardware. “The quicker a homeowner can make selections, the sooner we can get it on order and get it in,” Bliffert said. Some contractors are adjusting the way they approach planning to offset delays. For example, selecting materials and finishes at the outset, instead of as you progress through the project like you normally would, may mean the materials are available when you need them. “The design process has really changed,” said Robi Kirsic of TimeLine Renovation and Design. “We’re still designing based on homeowners’ wishes and dreams, but we’re also modifying by providing options based on what’s available.”
12 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com
KNOW WHERE YOU’RE WILLING TO COMPROMISE Whether you’re able or willing to compromise often comes down to why you’re doing the renovation in the first place. “Some homeowners are specific about what they want,” Kirsic said. “They’ve been waiting for a long time to do this project and they’re not doing it to compromise. Others have a time constraint for one reason or another; they don’t have the luxury of waiting.” It’s a sentiment echoed by others, who caution that you may be able to get an item you have your heart set on, but you may need to be willing to wait. “If you have your heart set on a certain bathtub, it might be a 6or 8-month wait, but another one might be available sooner,” said Jason Hensler of Marvin Windows and Doors. AVOID MAKING CHANGES Once your plans are set and your materials have been ordered, avoid unnecessary delays by changing your project scope or material selection. In this environment, project timelines are extremely tight and even minor changes can create significant disruptions, especially if there’s a delay in obtaining different materials or your new ideas require a different crew that wasn’t already scheduled for your job.
Local Expertise Innovative Approach Real Integrity CHOOSE A TRUSTWORTHY PARTNER
STACY CATE
While these are unusual times, having a reliable contractor can make the project run more smoothly and help you feel more comfortable as the project progresses. “Use someone you trust, someone who is part of a reputable group like the National Association of the Remodeling Industry,” Brown said. That way, if you encounter unexpected bumps along the way, you can be confident they will be handled professionally and appropriately. Brown encourages his teams to communicate early and often, which helps homeowners understand and trust they’re doing everything possible to keep the job on track. BE PATIENT Above all, understanding these are unusual times can go a long way toward a more successful project. “Patience will help it go a lot smoother,” Hensler said. “That may mean accepting longer wait times than you anticipated and a later completion date than you hoped.” The sooner you get your project started, the sooner your contractor can start mapping out a project timeline. Koi Ponds Bring Relaxation to Outdoor Living If you are looking for a fantastic addition to your lawn or garden landscaping, perhaps a Koi pond is something you might be interested in. These fantastic ponds make a great addition to your outdoor living space while providing a sense of peace and tranquility, an oasis of sorts in this world that can be rather hectic and chaotic at times. Even if you haven’t considered the benefits that Koi ponds could add to your enjoyment of your outdoor living area in the past, perhaps this article will help convince you of the value it can add, particularly if you plan to spend a great amount of time outdoors. There are a few considerations you need to keep in mind however when planning a Koi pond for your next landscaping project. Benefits of Koi Ponds Believe it or not, Americans in general spend a large amount of time running to and fro, which often makes relaxation a far too distant memory. Koi ponds by nature are relaxing to look at and enjoy. They are a great way to bring nature to your outdoor sanctuary without feeling over burdened by the natural surroundings. Koi fish are also rather relaxing to watch and enjoy. Another great benefit of Koi ponds is the very fact that they are a rather stress-free way of having and housing pets that the family can enjoy. While Koi are not entirely maintenance free, they are much easier to maintain and care for than a puppy or kitten would be! Most of the cost involved in caring for Koi is upfront, while you will continue to spend a great deal of money caring for other types of pets over time. Finally, Koi ponds offer a certain aesthetic appeal to your lawn or garden oasis. It will raise the value of your home not only when it comes time to sell, but also while you are living there. So often, people tend to think of improvements that will affect the resale value of their home, rather than considering improvements that may add simple enjoyment of home ownership. 14 | Celina LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com
Things to Know about Koi Ponds Koi ponds are not a light decision to make. You need to make sure that you live in an area where practical additions can be made to your landscaping during for those colder months. Temperature is a very important consideration when it comes to creating a Koi pond. They are only practical year-round in areas where the seasons are rather mild and there is absolutely no risk of freezing…I know we just had the Great Freeze of February!! This doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy a Koi pond or having Koi fish as pets in colder climates. It simply means that you need to consider bringing them indoors or install heaters for those colder months. Another consideration is location. The water in Koi ponds needs to be filtered. This means you need to plan for your pond to be located near a power source in order to power the filter. These ponds should also be a little larger in size than you may realize in order to provide a fitting habitat for the great fish you will be housing. Other things you should consider are the following: children in your area that may harm your fish accidentally, or even worse, harm themselves by falling into your pond; predators in the area – some birds love fish, your Koi and your pond are an investment; and the need to keep the water moving, as still water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and should be avoided. If you are considering something a little different for your Outdoor Living space, Koi ponds can provide years and years of enjoyment for you and your family. I hope you will take the time to learn more about these great landscaping additions and how they can improve your standard of outdoor living. We all seem to be around the house a little more these days so might as well enjoy the time together as much as we all can! Question: Jimmie, I have a line of older, established Italian Cypress we had installed years ago to provide privacy from our neighbor behind us with two-story windows. Let’s just say we were not the best of friends. Long story short, the tall Cypress began turning brown and losing its foliage over the past few years and now we have “gaps” and no longer have the original intention of privacy. It breaks my heart; I really like the look of those and reminded me of my younger days growing up at my old family home where we had similar line of these. Am I going to have to start all over with the risk of this happening again? I’m at a loss now on what to do and a friend at church told me about you! Please advise when you can. Thank you so much! - Lilly T. in Prosper
