Counselors Named Texas School Counselor of the Year Finalists

Ana Travis

Cara Yeates

Congratulations to Sonntag Elementary School counselor Ana Travis and Lawler Middle School counselor Cara Yeates who were named as finalists for Texas School Counselor of the Year. Travis and Yeates were selected as finalists for School Counselor of the Year based on their ability to create systemic change within the profession through significant leadership, collaboration and advocacy. They increase student success through their comprehensive school counseling programs. As candidates, Travis and Yeates completed an extensive application process and were judged by a panel of counseling professionals on multiple criteria, including school counseling innovations, effective school counseling programs, leadership skills and contributions to student achievement. Counselor Ana Travis Travis has been with Frisco ISD for 15 years and is thankful to work in a District that prioritizes the needs of students. She continually evolves the counseling program at Sonntag to meet the needs of children as they change over time. “Our campus is willing to do anything we can to provide all of the tools students need in order to be the best version of themselves,” Travis said. “I strongly feel that each and every student is capable of becoming everything they want to be. My greatest accomplishment is simply knowing my students. I take pride in knowing each child and want them to know that I love them very much.” She credits much of the success of the campus to the supportive staff who work alongside her for the benefit of students each day. Managing Director of Guidance and Counseling Dr. Stephanie Cook says that Travis is always prepared to give kids exactly what they need.

10 | Frisco LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

“Ana is a leader among elementary counselors by supporting her campus with guidance and support to students and staff,” Cook said. “She has worked on her campus to meet the personal needs of her campus, but she has also contributed to the efforts of the entire district during COVID to provide development in the area of social-emotional learning during eLearning.” Counselor Cara Yeates at Lawler Middle School, Cara Yeates is proud to serve the students and teachers as a campus leader. “Opening Lawler two years ago was a tremendous and unique opportunity for counselors to set the climate and culture of the school for staff, students and the community,” Yeates said. “As a counselor, I love to help build connections between students and teachers. It’s about serving the best interests of our students academically, socially and emotionally. I got into education because I always knew I wanted to be a force of positivity for children. I enjoy building relationships to help them know they are cared for so that they can grow and do anything they want to do.” “Cara embodies both innovation and tradition, rigor and grace,” Cook said. “She is a true asset to our secondary teams and our District counseling department.” Travis and Yeates will be honored at the Annual Lone Star State School Counselor Association Conference in Dallas, November 8-10. The Texas School Counselor of the Year award is presented by the Lone Star State School Counselor Association which represents school counselors across Texas. Thank you to these amazing counselors for their service to the students and staff of Frisco ISD.

Class of 2020 Comes Together to Celebrate Graduation Frisco ISD was honored to celebrate members of the Class of 2020 during outdoor graduation ceremonies at Toyota Stadium. The ceremonies featured a number of health and safety precautions in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Students and staff were given masks to wear, and guests sat socially-distanced as seniors’ names were called and graduates made their way across the field, stage and big screen. It was a joyous moment and cherished opportunity after 13 years of school and an especially difficult spring for seniors. “This may not be the ending we have all pictured, but I think this ending is much sweeter and will be something we will remember forever,” said Haley Sharpe, Student Council president at Wakeland High School. “We will never take another moment with friends or family for granted again. Despite all odds, we have come together again as one, one more time before we all part ways and begin our futures.” The Class of 2020 included more than 4,400 graduates from 10 Frisco ISD high schools. Lebanon Trail and Memorial high schools graduated their first-ever classes after opening in 2016 and 2018, respectively. “When I first entered the hallways of Memorial two short years ago, I was absolutely terrified, afraid of being in a new surrounding with unfamiliar faces,” admitted Memorial Student Council President Morgan Kirby. “I never expected to find a physics teacher with the biggest heart and best homemade cookies or a caring SRO officer who never failed to ask me how my day was. Most surprising of all were my classmates who demonstrated that friendship is not measured by the time you’ve known each other but by the experiences you’ve endured together. Thank you for making Memorial a home I have come to know, love and will profoundly miss.” Students at both Memorial and Lebanon Trail had the opportunity to establish legacies that will carry the schools forward. “We’ve been responsible for building traditions, creating a culture and establishing opportunities at LT where there were none before,” Lebanon Trail High School valedictorian Austin Ma told his fellow graduates. “What I encourage everyone to take with them is our shared identity as Trailblazers. It may no longer be our mascot, but we can still become trailblazers in other facets of our lives. So even after we walk across the stage shortly, let’s continue to innovate, to explore and blaze a new trail in whatever path we choose to pursue.” All of the graduates charted new territory this spring as they faced circumstances that would have seemed unimaginable just a few weeks or months prior. “More than anything I have witnessed the strength and resilience of our class and generation,” said Independence High School salutatorian Shivani Gollapudi. “We thrive with the unknown and the challenges that face us and I can’t wait to see what these traits will help us accomplish in the future.” Lessons from the health crisis – from flexibility to gratitude and kindness – are destined to shape the Class of 2020 for years to come. “We now are given an opportunity to take on the world, to find and pursue our passions and leave a legacy,” Sharpe said. “The opportunity to achieve greatness is always within our grasp despite whatever challenges we may face. Greatness is not measured by the amount of money you have or make or by recognition, but rather by leaving those with whom you cross paths with a little more happiness and hope. We will not remember each other by popularity or grades, but rather by the relationships we had with one another and the impact we made on each other.” Did You Miss Graduation? You can catch the ceremonies – or relive the excitement – by following the links at https://www.friscoisd.org/about/resources-and-information/graduation-ceremonies.

The Buyer, Builder and Realtor Relationship By Stacy Cate

T

he idea of buying a new construction home can be so exciting! Who doesn’t go into those extraordinary model homes and dream of having a home finished out exactly as they have it expertly laid out? Most builders’ model homes are like a wonderland of what is possible. The builder has set the stage to draw you into that feeling that you could just bring your toothbrush and a few clothes and move right in. Haven’t we all been guilty of walking slowly through the model home taking in all the thoughtful details, everything down to the perfectly placed accent pillow. This wonderland is a nice place to be and for the right price, the builder might sell that model to you as is. But, for the vast majority of us, the steps necessary to get from the model ‘dream home’ to the reality of what our budget will allow involve an extensive list of details and decisions to be made. There is no denying that in the North Dallas area the new home construction business is booming. Recent market reports show that in the fourth quarter of 2019 builders in DFW had 8,888 new home starts, or an increase of 20.7 percent over the fourth quarter of the prior year. The data also indicates that for the year of 2019, there were 35,228 new

14 | Frisco LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

homes which were sold in DFW, an increase of 4.8 percent over 2018. This information illustrates that the growth of the new home construction market in DFW is currently considered balanced, with about a 2.5 to 3-month supply of inventory. Buying a home is one of the largest financial transactions of one’s life and it can be intimidating for anyone. It’s important for buyers to educate themselves to protect their equity. Buying a new construction home is an entirely different dynamic than buying a pre - existing home. You will be buying directly from a builder who has built the home with the sole purpose of selling it at a profit. This builder needs to move the new home so he can move on to his next project. In order to understand the best strategies for buying new construction you need to be able to put yourself in the shoes of the builder. While the builders Sales Professional is a wonderful resource and able to provide a great deal of information about the neighborhood, the home features and the building process it is important to understand that it is not their job to protect the interest of the buyer in the transaction.

20+ Years of Local Expertise Meets a Fresh & Innovative Approach. S TA C Y C AT E

The National Association of Realtors encourages buyers to find a Realtor that has extensive knowledge of not only the building process but also knows the trends of the area and has experience negotiating the many details that are intrinsic in a new construction transaction. It is also important to understand that not having a Realtor to represent you does not mean that you will ‘get a better deal’ from the builder. Any reputable builder will likely tell you the same thing. In most cases, the Realtor and the Builder are important business partners who strive to support one another and cultivate a positive relationship. That being said, it is truly in the buyers’ best interest to hire someone that is there to protect your interest and investment. A Realtor is there to make sure that at the end of the often long and stressful building process the end product, your dream home, is what you expected it to be – a place to make memories and live your best life.

The Latest Trend in Backyard Renovation Send your landscaping and gardening questions to Jimmie Gibson Jr. at http://www.absolutelybushedlandscaping.com or jimmie@absolutelybushed.com Jimmie is a Prosper resident and the owner of Absolutely Bushed Landscaping Company, an award winning, family and veteran owned and operated business created in 1980 to provide the highest quality custom Outdoor Renovation available to homeowners in the Dallas Ft. Worth area.

It is official...we live in a world of technology at our fingertips! Our cars, homes, phones, tablets, online shopping, chip card readers, smart this and smart that!! So smart that we have gradually changed our lifestyles to accommodate the technology. One recent study showed that in general, children and families now spend more time watching, listening, or texting each other from all these devices than they do actually spending time and speaking to each other! With most of us at home these past few months, we have seen a very powerful trend in our industry taking shape over the past few years and we now have an entire division dedicated full time to try to keep up with the demand!

Putting Greens Avid golfer? There is another big trend in outdoor renovation…people installing custom putting greens in their backyards! And not just your typical green. These projects are just like the ones you see on the best golf courses around. Undulating greens with different height custom fringe around the edges. Want to add a spot 20 feet away to chip on to your green? Done. Want 10 different angles and holes installed into your putting green? Done. Not only do you no longer have to maintain that grass area in the backyard, but they require no water so are virtually maintenance free! And again, something the entire family can enjoy.

Well all that being said, it seems that parents are doing their absolute best now to reverse that trend and incorporate the latest trend in outdoor renovation…residential sports construction. This trend is becoming more popular than swimming pools or outdoor living area. You can now easily incorporate a half basketball court, putting green and custom batting cage for you and your kids for less than half the cost of a pool...and once installed there is little to no maintenance involved and provides year-round use.

Batting Cages This is another sports construction element we are seeing implemented into residential backyards. That neglected side yard, or that long stretch across the backyard are perfect for this type of project. Custom Batting Cages have come a long way. They can now be constructed with custom thick piping type poles and thick custom netting to contain the all the baseballs being hit. The higher end ones will stand up to the straightline winds and storms we frequently get verses the less expensive prefab ones on the market from the big box stores. We are now seeing custom colored artificial turf installed inside that designates the raised pitching mound area with state-of-the-art pitching machines, fully marked batters’ boxes, even a separate interior turf section with drop down netting that also allows someone to go in and drive golf balls inside it! You can actually train like the pros at home!

Fun, family fitness is the new trend. Parents are liking the fact they can get the kids out of their rooms or off the couch, put down that video game and get back to having quality family time. Many are encouraging their youth sports teams to now get that extra practice in before the next big game or tournament! Their backyard has become “the cool” place for the neighbors’ kids to hang out at. Athletic Courts Technology has advanced in these backyard courts also. The safest surfaces have now been incorporated into the latest available court tiles that actually have scientific studies proving less youth injuries than your traditional basketball courts we grew up playing on. They can also be fully customized to play a variety of sports on the same court based with options that are available to install. Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis, Pickle ball, Court Hockey, Futsal for the soccer enthusiast, Hopscotch, Four Square, and yes, even Shuffleboard! So, there is something available for everyone…small children to grandparents! 16 | Frisco LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

All these trends are leading to fun family fitness once again. We only get so much time with our kids as they grow up…it happens so fast and before you know it, they are leaving the nest. So, the next time you see your children on that video game, iPad, phone or sending you a text from 10 feet away....consider a backyard sports project!

Question: Jimmie, when exactly should I be feeding my landscaping? I have heard many different answers from the people at Home Depot, Lowes, and local nurseries. They also can’t seem to tell me what to feed with? Or how often. I have been reading your column for years and I cannot tell you how much I have learned over the years. I hope to run into you one day around Prosper and personally thank you! I know you are a busy guy so whenever you get around to it let me know your thoughts. Thank you again!!! – Melissa M. in Prosper Answer: Hi Melissa! Thank you for the kind words and I hope we run into to each other sometime so I can thank you for reading! Okay, down to your question. Best time to feed your landscaping is early spring and once again in early fall. Our plants are constantly taking nutrients from the soil so they can grow, bloom and generally be healthy and thrive. Therefore, we must put those nutrients back into the soil or it will become depleted over time and our plants will gradually decline. It is best to use a granular tree and shrub food available at most higher end nurseries that slowly releases Nitrogen into the soil over time. If you have Acidic plants then they need to be fed Acid type food. You can simply save a gallon milk jug, pour a cup of vinegar into it and fill rest of way with water and pour around root system of plants, another excellent source is coffee grounds for acidic plants. Until next time...Happy Gardening!! -Jimmie.

THE FLIRTY FIT & FLARE With its fitted bodice and flared skirt, the fit and flare style looks good on lots of figure types and has versatility for days. When a fit and flare is as feminine as this pale rose one, we love it styled with ladylike accessories like strappy neutral sandals and an elegant clutch. Pretty in pink, that’s you. THE CITY-CHIC MIDI For running around town, we’re all about this summer’s most approachable and universally flattering dress—the midi dress. Wear it on weekends while you’re perusing your favorite farmer’s market or antique fair. And—surprise, surprise—they even translate to work! Pair them with an oversized tote (for all of your essentials), a blazer and a pair of low heels to take you the extra mile. THE NOT-SO-SIMPLE SHIFT If vacation is right around the corner, look no further! These graphic, retro-inspired prints in cool jersey knits are the only way to beat the heat. We can see these at the beach, a lake or somewhere hot, hot, hot. Don’t forget your sun hat and fabulous fringe bag! THE WRAP STAR Flirty and flattering, a wrap dress (or two!) is a definite must in any dress collection. We love this especially summer-y version, with its bold, colorful print and pretty sleeves. The trick to keeping this look elegant is sleek accessories like a streamlined bag and pop-of-color flats. There you have it—a pretty summer dress for every occasion. Be sure to ask your Stylist for some fantastically fun and flirty dresses in your next Fix, and be totally set for summer. Article compliments of Stitch Fix. Ready for date night? SEASIDE: A Simple, Beautiful Life By Heather Reynolds

2020 hasn’t exactly been what we expected, and our summer vacations may have to look a bit different this year. Even though it SEEMS like we’ve been on summer break for 3 months already, the reality is that Summer has just begun. As states begin to open back up and travel restrictions are lifted, many of us are gearing up for a fun family vacation…and with the continued uncertainty, most are looking for somewhere closer to home or within a decent driving distance. This month, we’re going to take you on a tour of Seaside, a quaint beachfront community nestled between Panama City Beach and Destin along Highway 30A…and only a short 11hour drive from the DFW area. In Seaside, you can literally walk or bike anywhere…there’s no need for a car. The narrow cobblestone streets are lined with charming beach cottages, white picket fences and quaint shops and storefronts. In the center of town there is a field that hosts a weekly farmer’s market, outdoor concerts and movies under the stars. Around the Town Square you’ll find amazing restaurants, quaint cafes, gourmet food trucks, adorable clothing boutiques, delicious ice cream shops and the most delightful book and record store. It’s the idyllic vacation life. Seaside is not like other commercialized beach towns. There are no skyscraper hotels or giant condominiums…you literally feel like you are living at the beach. The food choices are unique as well. Our favorite place to eat was Great Southern Café – it’s a must if you are anywhere near the area! Known for their “new-fashioned” southern cuisine, their menu is full of fresh produce from nearby farms and fresh seafood from the Gulf of Mexico. We also loved “Airstream Row”…a grouping of food trucks at the center of Seaside. Favorites include The Meltdown on 30A, featuring traditional and specialty grill cheese sandwiches; Frost Bites, serving shaved ice, homemade frozen custard and fresh squeezed lemonade and Wild Bill’s Beach Dogs, the best hot dogs on the beach!

Seaside Florida is truly the perfect beach setting for families. The sand is white as snow and soft as baby powder. The water is a crystalclear turquoise blue and the waves are normally gentle and easy. You can’t miss Seaside’s main beach access under a tall gray structure…The Seaside Florida Tower. The iconic tower is a cross between a pyramid and a lighthouse. And once you’re there, cabanas line the beach for fun in the sun. There are nine pavilions that anchor the nine streets and provide access to the powdery white sand and inviting waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Whether you’re walking along the shoreline, building a sandcastle or examining a seashell, Seaside is the perfect beach vacation!
