New Year’s Resolutions for Families Resolutions can be easy to give up on, mostly because they are all about YOU in a world where you’re constantly focused on taking care of everyone else. We have entered into not only a new year, but a new decade…so why not try making a new annual tradition of establishing family resolutions? We chose to call ours “goals” and we each picked one for bettering ourselves, our finances and our jobs/school. We wrote them down, shared them as a family to keep each other accountable, and will pack them up with the Christmas décor…so when we get everything out next year, we can look back on what we wanted to achieve and see how well we did! Need some ideas to get your family started? We’ve got them for you – and they are fun, easy and are sure to benefit your entire family unit! UNPLUG! We spend so much of our time on electronic devices these days…for work and for play. When was the last time you and your family spent a day “unplugged” without watching any TV, looking at your cell phones, following your social media accounts or checking your email? Set a goal to spend at least one day each month, better yet – each week, without your devices. Use the time to play board games, enjoy the outdoors and simply communicate face to face with the people who mean the most to you. EAT WELL Committing to eat healthy meals as a family can replace the need for the latest fad diet plan. Even if you and your children are a healthy weight, seeing their parents keep healthy eating habits can positively shape their relationship with food. Talk about what constitutes healthy eating as a group and come up with a meal plan together. Involving your children in the planning, shopping and cooking can help them be more interested and more willing to try new things at mealtime. EXERCISE It’s easy for your exercise resolutions to fade quickly in the wintery weather. However, you can make fitness fun and easy by doing family activities that get you moving. Take the dogs for a walk, have an indoor dance party or go for a bike ride. We are lucky that our winters are pretty mild, so as long as you cover your head and hands, you can beat those winter blues with some physical activity all winter long in Texas! READ How many books do you or your children have on your bookshelves that you’ve never even cracked open? When was the last time you took a trip to the Library? Why not make 2020 the year that you all become

6 | Gunter - LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

bookworms? Get recommendations from your children’s teachers or the local librarians to select appropriate reading levels for your kiddos. Think about topics that you might want to read up on as well – and keep a family reading chart. During one of your family UNPLUGGED times, you can devote some time summarizing what you’ve been reading with one another. DO CHORES If you don’t already have a system to spread out the daily responsibilities in your home, now is the time to make one! Not only will it alleviate the stress of the work falling on one single person, but it’s a great way to build confidence in your children! Knowing that they have fulfilled a task that helps the entire family gives them a sense of belonging and importance. Assigning chores and reminding kids to do them may seem daunting and like a chore in itself – so try keeping a chore jar with slips of paper for kids to pick which job they’ll do that week, such as taking out the trash or running the vacuum. BE KIND TO EACH OTHER Could your family use a little more kindness? A little refresher course on manners may be all that is needed to put a stop to the whining, refusing to share or forgetting to use those magic words with each other. Bear in mind that children learn how to be kind by watching their parents’ actions, so try to be intentional about complimenting your partner and being compassionate during disagreements. Another great way to teach your children kindness is through community service. There are many local organizations that could really use volunteers to carry out their missions. GET MORE SLEEP More than likely, you’d do anything for a little more restful time in your

bed, but your kids would fight tooth and nail to stay up an hour later watching their favorite show. The fact is, everyone needs an average of at least eight hours of sleep to stay healthy and be productive. Create a bedtime routine checklist for help your younger kids settle into a better sleep schedule and talk with your teenagers about their nightly routines. You can also implement some great ways to unwind yourself – a cup of tea, a warm bath or simply turning off your devices and reading. SAVE MONEY Start the new year and the new decade off right by managing your debt and saving money every way you can. Make a budget – and stick to it! Teach your teens and younger children how to manage money too. It’s never too late to establish good financial habits! Setting goals with your kids will make them better with money down the road as well. LIVE GREEN Sure, living “green” is good for the planet, but it’s also good for your family and your pocketbook. Check with your local town or private recycling program to make sure you are recycling everything you can. Buy reusable grocery bags and purchase organic whenever possible to keep harmful pesticides off your plate. SCHEDULE MORE DATE NIGHTS This one is for the parents. Oftentimes we can get so wrapped with our children’s activities and our jobs that we begin to lose focus on the number relationship we have. When was the last time you went out on a real date? Date nights help you and your spouse connect – over wine glasses instead of bottles and sippy cups! So, book a babysitter or a relative regularly, preferably at least once a month. Your marriage will benefit from a little romance and quiet time!

Starting a Home Remodeling Project 7 Tips for Choosing a Qualified Contractor

utside of your home itself, remodeling is typically one of the largest investments you can make as a homeowner. While some projects can be tempting to tackle yourself, many larger-scale projects may require hiring a qualified professional.

O

Because remodeling your home is a big undertaking, it’s important to take steps to ensure the professional you hire to perform the work is qualified to complete it to the highest standards of quality and integrity. Consider these tips from the experts at the National Association of the Remodeling Industry to help you make an informed decision when hiring a remodeling contractor. Get Recommendations One of the best ways to find qualified, professional help is through word-of-mouth referrals. Ask your relatives, friends, neighbors or coworkers – particularly if they’ve recently renovated their own homes – if they have any previous experience with companies they would recommend. Also consider searching online for reviews of companies in your area.

8 | Gunter - LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

Stay Local It’s often best to consider established local remodeling companies first, as they are typically more compelled to perform highquality work, which allows their businesses to thrive and remain in the community. Local professionals are also likely to know permit requirements and building codes in your city or county, which can change from year to year. Follow Your Design Aesthetic Whether your home features a mid-century modern, contemporary or farmhouse design style, it’s critical to choose a remodeler who is knowledgeable in the construction and design of the style of your home. Additionally, a company that specializes in remodeling kitchens may not be suited for a bathroom or bedroom project. Ask for Licenses and Insurance Many states, but not all, require contractors to be licensed, bonded and insured. Ask for copies of licenses and insurance certificates for any remodelers you’re considering making sure they’re current. Most states also require contractors to carry worker’s compensation, property damage and personal liability insurance for their crews. Contact your state or local licensing agencies to ensure the contractor meets the minimum requirements. Check References Once you’ve narrowed your list of potential contractors, ask for a list of references you can contact and a portfolio of work. A typical reference list includes 10 or more jobs with dates as well as the customer’s name, address and phone number, and a portfolio should also contain at least 10 projects with photos of the space before work began, during the project and after completion. If possible, also consider visiting a current job site to see first-hand how the contractor operates.

Search for Violations or Complaints Because you can’t always rely on a portfolio or references, it’s important to also check with your local consumer affairs office or the Better Business Bureau to ensure there are no complaints on record for the contractors you’re considering, which may help further narrow your list. Compare Apples to Apples While a number of different factors goes into every remodeling project, be sure all contractors you solicit bids from are using the same scope and quality of work requirements. Discuss any significant variations in price or timelines and be wary of any substantially lower estimates. Find more tips for selecting a contractor at remodelingdoneright.com.

BETTER BALANCE FOR EVERY DAY

Resolve to Make Nutritious Eating a Priority

iscovering a better version of yourself is all about striking balance. That’s especially true when it comes to making smarter food choices that you can maintain over time. A sustainable, long-term healthy eating approach, such as the Atkins low-carb lifestyle, emphasizes variety and balance. Start planning a low-carb menu filled with high-fiber carbohydrates, optimal protein and healthy fats with these tips from Colette Heimowitz, Vice President of Nutrition and Education for Atkins.

D

FILL UP WITH FIBER-RICH FOODS. Foods like vegetables, nuts, seeds, low-glycemic fruit (like berries) and whole unrefined grains are considered carbohydrates, but they don’t raise your blood sugar the way processed carbs do. Fiber slows the entry of glucose into your bloodstream so you don’t experience insulin spikes that encourage your body to produce and store body fat. Try to eat between 25-35 grams of fiber a day.

SALMON AND ASPARAGUS SHEET PAN Net carbs: 4.41 1 bunch thin spear asparagus 1 tablespoon, plus 1/4 teaspoon, extra-virgin olive oil 1/8 teaspoon salt, divided 2 salmon fillets (4 ounces each), no more than 3/4-inch thick 1 pinch black pepper 3 tablespoons olive oil-based mayonnaise 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/4 teaspoon minced or pressed garlic 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese

REDUCE INFLAMMATION. A low-carb approach eliminates refined and processed foods and sugars that can cause inflammation. Focus on foods that decrease inflammation, such as colorful low-glycemic vegetables, low-sugar fruits, protein and healthy fats such as olive oil. The ground turmeric in this Golden Milk recipe offers an easy way to fight inflammation without sacrificing flavor.

Heat oven to 425 F. Wash asparagus and remove woody ends. Place on rimmed baking sheet and toss with 1 tablespoon olive oil and pinch of salt. Arrange in single layer, leaving space for salmon. Place salmon skin-side down on sheet. Brush with remaining olive oil and season with remaining salt and pepper. Place in oven and bake 12 minutes.

KICKSTART YOUR MORNING. Start your day with a protein-packed choice such as these Chocolate Banana Protein Overnight Oats. You’ll get the omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants from the chia seeds along with protein and healthy fats to keep you energized while avoiding high-sugar breakfast alternatives.

In small bowl, combine mayonnaise, lemon juice, mustard and garlic.

Remove sheet pan from oven, sprinkle asparagus spears with cheese and cook 3 minutes, or until fish reaches 145 F and asparagus spears are tender and beginning to brown on tips. Plate one fillet and half the asparagus, then drizzle each plate with about 2 tablespoons mayonnaise sauce and serve.

GOLDEN MILK Net carbs: 3 1 cup canned unsweetened coconut milk 1 cup plain unsweetened almond milk 1 cup water 1 tablespoon coconut oil 1 1/2 teaspoons ground turmeric 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper 10 drops liquid stevia extract In small pan, whisk coconut milk, almond milk, water, coconut oil, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger and pepper. Warm over medium heat until hot but not simmering, about 7 minutes. Remove from heat, whisk in sweetener and serve. CHOCOLATE BANANA PROTEIN OVERNIGHT OATS Net carbs: 6.84 1 Atkins Chocolate Banana Shake 2 tablespoons rolled oats 2 tablespoons chia seeds 2 tablespoons hemp hearts 2 tablespoons unsweetened coconut shreds 2 tablespoons sliced almonds Fruit, such as sliced bananas or berries (optional) In jar with tight-fitting lid, combine shake, rolled oats, chia seeds, hemp hearts, coconut and almonds. Cover and refrigerate at least 3 hours or overnight. Top with fruit, if desired.

7 New Year Basics By Madison Johnson

Coming into the New Year, there are so many different things to be stressed about. What you are wearing shouldn’t be one of those things. Fashion trends are constantly changing…so having some everyday basics are essential to any woman’s closet. Your closet should be saturated with staple items to support all fashion trends throughout the months. Here are seven of the most needed clothing items that never go out of style!

Quality Denim

Every woman needs two or three pairs of sturdy jeans. Light wash, dark wash, and black jeans are essential to all closets. And investing in a nicer pair of jeans from brands like Hollister or Buckle is strongly suggested. When getting a nicer—more expensive jean, the quality and wear will be much longer than a cheaper pair that will rip and wear out after just a few short years. Investing in a few more high brand jeans will justify that big purchase!

Plain Tee’s

A white t-shirt will never go out of style. Plain and basic t-shirts should always be in your closet. Paired with the newest trendy skirts or your trusty denim jeans, it can always complete an outfit. These basic tops can be styled any way on any day of the week for any occasion. Having multiples of this are a must have!

Hoop Earrings

Hoop earrings make a statement without being too loud. The size choice of your hoops are endless and they add a stylish touch to bring your outfit together. Hoops have been in style for decades upon decades and they aren’t going anywhere!

Leather Jacket

Another good investment to add to your closet, a leather jacket can spice up any outfit. Throw on a brown leather jacket over your basic white t-shirt and your favorite pair of denim. Adding a black leather jacket can add an extra edgy style to your outfit. Although it is another expensive investment, a good leather jacket can last you through the decade and even longer.

Little Black Dress

The classic little black dress. Every woman needs their idea of the perfect black dress in their closet. Finding the perfect dress that flatters your body type will have you wanting to wear this dress to any formal event you attend. Confidence is key when selecting your outfit, and with a slimming black dress it will do just the trick!

Heeled Booties

For an everyday outfit, a pair of black or brown heeled sock booties are the core essential. You can wear heeled booties with any outfit, from casual to dressy, it fits all criteria. Pair them with a silk blouse and a pair of jeans or a turtleneck sweater and a patterned a-line skirt. A pair of booties can complement and blend with any styled outfit.

Structured Blazers

A classic blazer is an item that you can always count on. It can be layered on top to complete an outfit for lunch with your friends or a business meeting. A trendy blazer takes a basic outfit to the next level and adds some character.
