Meaningful and Fun Family Thanksgiving Traditions There are certain traditions we all recognize for Thanksgiving…football, turkey, pumpkin pie and the Macy’s Day Parade are staples. Thanksgiving should be made up of customs that you will remember forever. Passing down family traditions to your children and sharing them with a table full of friends and family is pure joy. If you are looking for new ways to incorporate some unique family traditions, we’ve provided a few!
Have a Special Breakfast Everyone knows that Thanksgiving belongs to the turkey, but why not start a new tradition that includes a special breakfast as well? Most mornings are hectic and rushed…leaving little time for an old-fashioned family breakfast. Start Thanksgiving morning off with a relaxed meal of family favorites that is sure to set the scene for plenty of gratitude. Hot, fresh pumpkin bread, pancakes and maple syrup or homemade biscuits with country sausage gravy…what a perfect way start the holiday!
Pass Around a Gratitude Journal Begin with a beautiful blank journal that your family can use for years to come. Then, before the turkey is served, pass the journal around the table and ask all of the guests to write at least one thing they are thankful for. An adult can record for children that are too young to write. Over the years, the journal will become filled with cherished comments and memories. It’s fun to reflect on these messages at Thanksgiving celebrations and see how your family’s gratitude reflections have changed over time.
Create a Thankful Tree Place bundles of curly willow in a sturdy, tall vase. Spread out the branches to allow for plenty of room to hang the leaves. Buy or cutout a mix of paper leaves in fall hues of orange, red, yellow and brown. Using a hole punch, make a hole at the base of each leaf. Give each guest a leaf and pen to write what they are thankful for. Once they are finished with their gratitude message, have them tie their leaf to the branch with 3” strips of gold, white or black baker’s twine. Before sitting down for 6 | Gunter - LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com
your Thanksgiving meal, invite your family guests to read and enjoy the notes of gratitude. Keeping the leaves year to year will help your family remember how many blessings they have in their lives.
Have a Table Toast Sometimes, in the stress of preparing the meal and readying the house for family and guests, the most important part of Thanksgiving is forgotten…being thankful! If passing around a journal seems too formal or the Thankful Tree doesn’t seem to fit with your family, try a roundtable toast. Have each guest raise their glass – even if it’s a sippy cup – and make a toast for what they’re thankful for. It’s a great way to start Thanksgiving dinner and share some laughs and appreciation with those you love most.
Kick Off the Holiday Season This year, Thanksgiving is very late in the month. So, instead of fighting the urge to delay the Christmas season, embrace it! Buy matching Christmas pajamas for all the kids – adults too if you want – and wrap them up in Christmas paper. After your last bite of pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving evening, let the kids unwrap their first Christmas gift of the season. Your family will enjoy a special night of togetherness while in your matching pajamas watching your favorite holiday movie.

Gunter High School Student Helps Grant a Wish By Heather Reynolds
We recently received a note from one of our readers about an amazing Gunter High School student that was featured in our Senior Spotlight section a few months ago. These are the types of emails and messages that bring us back to our roots and remind us what an amazing community Gunter, Texas really is…and how the Tigers are always willing to step up and give back. Leigh Moore, a Gunter resident, has been a volunteer for Make a Wish North TX for five years. She had an upcoming wish reveal for a 6-year-old little girl that was going to Disney. Moore inquired on a Gunter Moms Facebook page and requested assistance from any of the amazing princesses that had participated in the Dining With Disney event at GHS in September. Enter Keely Ward. This GHS Senior stepped up to give of her time and talent on a Sunday afternoon. Moore said, “Knowing that she volunteered from the kindness of her own hear, I expected a sweet kid. But she exceeded my expectations.” The day of the Make a Wish Reveal, Keely arrived and began to prepare for her part in the wish grant. They explained that the Wish was a surprise… and that she got to tell the 6-year-old that she was going to Disney in 5 days! Keely handled it amazingly and with such sweetness and heart. Tears of happiness were shed that day for this little 6-year-old girl who has

only been in America for a very short time. She has learned English and all that we have to offer her here. Her wish grant is the cumulative reward for this and recent medical hurdles…and Keely was the perfect addition to the celebration. Thank you to Leigh Moore for reaching out to us to share your story. Thank you to Keely Ward for stepping up and giving your time for a precious child that you didn’t know. Thank you to Tim and Janelle Ward for raising such a sweet, kind and generous young lady. And thank you Gunter ISD for encouraging our students and challenging them to achieve the highest character standards and ethics. We are so proud to be a part of the Gunter community!

Thanksgiving Tablescape: Woodsy Elegance Thanksgiving is right around the corner which means now is the time to get comfortable inside your home and decorate for your family feast. Creating a Tablescape is an easy way to add Thanksgiving décor and dress up your dining room. Using a mixture of pumpkins, candles, foliage and flowers, group your items together to create a decorative arrangement. You don’t need to spend a fortune – in fact, by using natural materials and repurposing items you already have, you can create a homespun table that will welcome your guests and celebrate your blessings. We incorporated a mix of natural elements and calming colors in this dining room for a look of woodsy elegance. We started with a beautiful floral arrangement centerpiece filled with our favorites – lilies, chocolate colored sunflowers, orchids and creamy white hydrangeas. From there, we added birchwood chargers topped with white china plates with gold trim, as well as some gold accent pieces. Fragrant mint colored candles tucked into white and gold candlesticks, fresh eucalyptus and pinecones cast a note of laid-back romance and woodsy glam to the holiday table.
Antique farmhouse ceramic planter showing off this lush arrangement of autumn’s most gorgeous flowers. The fabulous fall centerpiece includes fresh hydrangeas in cream, brown sunflowers, rust red lily, cream white lilies, burgundy cymbidium orchids, and solidaster accented with fresh seeded and silver dollar eucalyptus greenery. Topped of with a 6-loop bronze bow made of crush velvet ribbon lined with gold shimmer!

On the serving buffet, we hung our grapevine wreath over the mirror to create our focal point. Incorporating elements of varying heights with vases and candlesticks, the buffet always gives the eye something to focus on without being overwhelming. We kept the woodsy elegance theme by using birch bark candles and fresh eucalyptus right along with the gold accent pieces and creamy colors. To tie in the colors from the floral centerpiece, we added colorful candles and sprigs of eucalyptus to the gold candlesticks. A few pumpkins and pinecones pull it all together for a wonderful autumn display.
Dress up your table or shelf with this Ivory Pre-lit Ceramic Pumpkin with Burlap Bow! The cut-out design creates a trellis pattern shadow when lit.
Kirkland’s - $19.99 12” Grapevine Wreath Features rustic fall foliage and accents that offers a warm welcome. This wreath has a versatile design and is a great addition to your fall decor!

In His Presence
Give Thanks in All Circumstances By Pastor Jack Graham
Thou that hast giv’n so much to me, Give one thing more, a grateful heart. Not thankful, when it pleaseth me; As if thy blessings had spare days: But such a heart, whose pulse may be Thy praise. —George Herbert Every year at the end of November, we join family and friends over a great feast to reflect upon blessings and give thanks to the Lord. Thanksgiving Day can be a wonderful time, a holy time, of pausing to express gratitude to God. But just like prayer and praise and listening to Him, thanksgiving isn’t only meant for special gatherings, for a date on the calendar, for a once-ayear celebration. The psalmist says in Psalm 34:1, I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. And the apostle Paul implores the church in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 to “give thanks in all circumstances.” In fact, it is the “will of God in Christ Jesus” that we do so. Gratitude enhances our relationship with the Lord not only by encouraging a spirit of joy but also by preparing our hearts to bless others ... to serve others ... to do the Lord’s work. One of God’s greatest blessings is calling His people to be a part of something greater than we could possibly know—the eternal impact of what we are doing as the mission of Christ followers. Every day, we should give thanks for the glorious opportunity to serve a sovereign and faithful God whose love endures forever. No matter what you are experiencing, good or bad, thanksgiving will not change your circumstances. But, thanksgiving and praise will change what your circumstances do to you. Your circumstances in life will either destroy you or can be a blessing to you if you learn how to give thanks. And when we say thank you, we recognize that beyond us and beyond our circumstances and beyond what’s going on in our lives, there is a sovereign God who loves us, who has a wonderful plan for our lives, who plans to give us a future and a hope, who is overall, above all, in all, through all, and in everything! So, today … and every day … we give thanks. Dr. Jack Graham is pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church, which has campuses in Prosper, Plano and Dallas.

The Perfect Turkey Why all the fuss and stress over the Thanksgiving turkey? Well, it’s the centerpiece of the entire meal and there is usually a table full of people that you don’t want to disappoint…so it’s a BIG deal! But here is a complete fuss-free and easy method for cooking a perfect, beautiful Thanksgiving Turkey. You don’t even need an expensive roasting pan – the real key to a perfect turkey is to not overcook it. Plan ahead to get the timing right and you’ll come out with a gorgeous, super juicy, perfectly cooked bird.
longer to cook, which could lead to a dry turkey. DON’T COOK STUFFING INSIDE THE TURKEY:
WHAT SIZE TURKEY DO YOU NEED:
If you try to put stuffing inside the cavity of the bird, the turkey will be overcooked by the time the stuffing reaches a temperature that’s safe to eat. Instead, use the Good Ole’ Country Dressing recipe and cook it in a casserole dish. You can then fill the cavity of the bird with things that will give it flavor: salt, pepper, garlic, onion, apples, oranges, pineapple or celery.
Buy about 2 pounds of turkey per person…that way you’ll have leftovers!
TEST THE TURKEY WITH A THERMOMETER:
HOW TO THAW YOUR TURKEY:
The only way to really tell if it’s cooked to 165 degrees Fahrenheit is by using a thermometer. Once it reaches 160 degrees F, take it out, tent it with foil and allow it to cook that extra 5 degrees inside the foil tent.
Allow plenty of time for your turkey to thaw. A good rule of thumb is to allow one day in the refrigerator for every five pounds of meat. It’s a good idea to give yourself one extra day, just to be safe. Also make sure you set your turkey on a cookie sheet or a pan to catch any liquid as it defrosts. DON’T WASH THE TURKEY: If you wash your turkey in the sink, you will contaminate your sink. Instead, remove it from its packaging, dry it off with some paper towels and prepare it for the oven. Any bacteria on the turkey will be killed in the hot oven while it bakes. DON’T BRINE OR BASTE THE TURKEY: If you’re using a high-quality turkey from the store (like a Butterball), brining is an unnecessary step. You can do it if you want, but you can achieve a moist turkey without it. Basting is also unnecessary. It requires you to constantly open the oven, which causes it to lose heat and take
14 | Gunter - LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com
LET THE TURKEY REST: After removing it from the oven, let it rest for 15 – 40 minutes in the pan and tent with foil. If you’re using the drippings for gravy, move the turkey from its pan to a cutting board and tent it with foil while it rests there.
HOW TO PREPARE: First, remove the thawed bird from its packaging. Remove the neck and the bag of giblets and either discard or save them for gravy. Pat the turkey with paper towels. Next, season the cavity with salt and pepper. Stuff it with quartered apples, oranges, pineapples, onions, celery and fresh herbs. To help the turkey sit flatter, tuck the wings underneath and set it on a roasting rack inside a roasting pan, or on a bed of chopped veggies in a disposable roasting pan.
Next, use your fingers to loosen and lift the skin above the breast and smooth a few tablespoons of butter, garlic and herbs underneath. Use twine to tie the legs together and then slather the outside of the turkey with more butter, garlic and herbs. That’s it! You are now ready to let your oven do the rest of the work! Place the turkey into your preheated oven (350 degrees F) and bake for approximately 20 minutes per pound. Check the turkey about halfway through cooking to see if the skin is golden brown, and then place a large piece of tinfoil over the meat to keep it from overcooking.
GOOD OLE’ COUNTRY DRESSING 1 pound bulk breakfast sausage 12 ounce bag of Pepperidge Farm Country Style Cube Stuffing 2 cups chopped celery 1 large onion, chopped 7 cups chicken stock 1 teaspoon dried sage leaves 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning 1/4 stick butter, melted Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Cook sausage in a large skillet until it starts to brown. Add melted butter, celery and onion and sauté for 5 – 10 minutes, or until transparent. Empty the cube stuffing into a large bowl and then pour the sausage, celery and onion mixture on top. Add the chicken stock, salt, pepper, sage and poultry seasoning and mix well. Pour dressing mixture into a greased pan and back until cooked through and golden brown, about 45 minutes. Fall Jackets: Our Favorite Layer Players Meet your new BFFF (Best Friends For Fall). Not as heavy-duty as a puffer, not as lightweight as a cardie, our fall jacket picks are the perfect coldweather companions. This season, our favorite silhouettes are dipped in autumn’s jewel-toned hues, and cleverly crafted in faux leather, super soft suede and sturdy cotton. Wear these smart styles over your fall staples––from plush sweaters and plaid shirts to bodyskimming knit dresses and distressed denim––and top off your look with a warm layer of cool.
THE MODERN LEATHER JACKET Nothing says “cool” quite like a leather jacket—even those of the faux variety. Maybe it’s that bad-boy vibe left over from the rock bands of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Whatever it is, this versatile all-weather closet staple can put a casual chic spin on just about any outfit. Team it with a pair of distressed boyfriend jeans and a plaid shirt for a low-key look, or layer it over a little black lace dress for a fancier affair.
THE CHIC CARGO JACKET Utilitarian in more ways than one, the cargo jacket makes an appearance this season in bright colors (racy red!) as well as the original army green. This lighter weight jacket can be styled in a multitude of ways, whether you’re pairing it with a soft tee and comfy leggings or getting your girly on in a flowy dress and classic pumps. Keeping your other pieces neutral sets up the bolder-hued jackets for instant style stardom.
THE EDGY MOTO JACKET Little did Irving Schott know that his first motorcycle jacket, the “Perfecto”, designed in 1928 and sold for an astounding (for the times) $5.50, would go on to become one of our most coveted street-style jackets. No longer relegated to rough-riding Harley dudes, the moto has the uncanny ability to turn just about any ensemble into something sleek and special—even more so this season, thanks to richly-colored riffs on the classic black style. We love the contrast of a sugary-sweet floral dress paired with a stretch twill moto. Go ahead, channel your inner rocker chick.
THE SUPPLE SUEDE JACKET Think leather brushed to a buttery softness, and you’ve got suede. A suede jacket will keep you toasty without that bundled-up, bulky look. While it does require a bit more care (spills or stains can be a pain, and don’t get us started on rain!), we think it’s worth the extra effort. A suede jacket instantly elevates your outfit. Try a tailored silhouette with your favorite high-waisted jeans and a cute crop top. The seasonal juxtaposition is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.
THE BOMB BOMBER A timeless piece of outerwear traditionally made of leather, the bomber originated in the first World War and was worn by flyboys to keep the chilly cockpit temperatures at bay. Today, this versatile jacket—ingeniously reinvented for civilians—is offered in a multitude of colors, cuts and fabrics. We’re especially fond of quilted olive (not quite military, but close). A less structured hemline gives it a femme feel. Wear it for warmth with your favorite jeans and booties, or pair it with a frilly frock to add edgy attitude to your outfit.
THE TIMELESS JEAN JACKET Long, cropped or somewhere in between, denim jackets are one of the most versatile closet staples and a top pick for this season’s love affair with layering. We’re currently crushing on the feminine take of the working man’s classic Trucker jacket with its flap-covered pockets and buttonup front. Try it splashed in a stone wash, layered over your favorite knit dress (or even a summery frock!). Add tights and booties for warmth. Of course, jeans work equally well—just make sure the dye is not too matchy-matchy and you’re golden.
Article compliments of Stitch Fix. With such a plethora of fall jackets to choose from, it’s hard to know where to start. Ask your Stitch Fix Stylist to surprise you with a toasty topper to complement your unique style. Visit www.stitchfix.com to schedule your fix! 16 | Gunter LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com

A Cape Cod Thanksgiving By Heather Reynolds
C
ape Cod is known as a wonderful vacation for good reason: It’s a beautiful oceanside area with miles of unspoiled beaches, hiking trails, ocean vistas and sand dunes. October to April is the Cape’s off-season, which means that the exorbitant prices for accommodations fall during this time. And while the prices are low, there are plenty of things to do in Cape Code during November – without the crowds of the summer tourist season. Daily temperatures are fairly mild, sometimes reaching up to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Cape Cod is known as one of the top cultural centers of Massachusetts. There is an abundance of museums of all types, catering to enthusiasts, children, history buffs and nature lovers. You’ll want to be sure and visit the Museum of Natural History, the Children’s Museum, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, the Sandwich Glass Museum and the Nantucket Whaling Museum. And due to its rich history, New England is indisputably the best region to go antiquing. November is a fitting time to visit, as it was at the Cape’s northern tip that the Mayflower first landed on November 11, 1620, bringing the Pilgrims to the “New World”. It was in 1621 that the Pilgrims and Native Americans held their three day Feast – The First Thanksgiving. And what better way to honor this historic milestone than a trip to the Cape to celebrate! Each year, during the weekend before Thanksgiving, the America’s Hometown Thanksgiving celebration is held in Plymouth. The celebration of Thanksgiving becomes history-brought-to-life as Pilgrims, Native Americans, Soldiers, Patriots and Pioneers climb out of the history books and onto the streets of Plymouth. And this year’s event kicks off the 2020 Celebration Series which celebrates the 400th Anniversary of the Mayflower Pilgrims’ First Landing in 1620! Another fun tradition that you won’t want to miss is on November 27th, when more than 3,000 lights will shine during the Annual Lighting of the Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown. You will also want to visit the Provincetown Museum to see the Pilgrim exhibit, complete with a diorama of the signing of the Mayflower Compact, the first governing document of the new Plymouth settlement. 18 | Gunter - LifeAndLuxuryMagazine.com
Even though some Cape Cod hotels close during the off-season, many stay open with reduced rates. Also, because vacancies are common during November, don’t be afraid to negotiate a lower rate or ask for a room with an ocean view. One of the best places that we found was the luxurious Wequassett Resort and Golf Club. Nestled in the elbow of Cape Cod, this meticulously landscaped luxury resort hideaway features lavish guest rooms and suites, five acclaimed restaurants, two extraordinary beaches and eighteen holes of golf. Stay in the 435 square foot Premiere Water View Cottage room, with a king size bed and queen sofa bed, sitting area, luxurious bath and a waterfront deck, complete with an outdoor fireplace.
