The Magic of Santa, by Chris Fritchie Studios
Our Family Would Like to Wish You a Very Merry Christmas! It’s the most wonderful time of the year…some might even say it’s purely magical! There’s just something about the holiday season – lights twinkle brighter, colors look more vibrant, there’s more pep in your step and people seem to be more cheerful and warm. It’s an inviting and exciting season for most, especially those little ones who are anxiously awaiting a visit from the jolly ole’ guy himself! And maybe even more exciting and fun are all the opportunities we have right here in Prosper to spread holiday cheer to those less fortunate. Cornerstone Christmas, Bethlehem Place, PLA’s Angel Trees, Cops with a Clause…just to name a few. There are so many different organizations that need our help during this season, and it’s an incredible chance to get your children involved to share the true meaning of Christmas. Our family is blessed to be able to enjoy this holiday season together. Christmas is going to be so much fun at our house this year, as our youngest is at the perfect age to take in all the magic of the season. And even more fun is that our older kids are just as excited to watch her as they are for themselves, which gives the holidays a bit more sentimental value. As you just MAY be able to tell, we had a great time at our Magic of Santa photo shoot at Chris Fritchie Studios. Santa was amazing to work with and our girls had the time of their lives – his magic is real y’all! Chris Fritchie is so talented, his set is phenomenal and the experience you get is unlike other. It was the perfect way to kick off our family Christmas season! We hope to see you at Cornerstone Christmas on December 11th, and if you can, please grab a sweet little angel off one of the Angel Trees around town – the Season of Giving is upon us!

The Town
T wn Matters From the Mayor’s Desk
There’s little doubt that 2016 has been a memorable year. That’s true on the global, national and local levels. For example, this has been the hottest year in recorded history. The world’s climate is definitely changing, and whether or not human activity has had anything to do with it is almost inconsequential. The fact that the earth is warming is undeniable. What specific effect it will have on us is still being debated, but we will have to deal with melting ice caps and rising seas in the near future. Terrorism and conflict continue to rage around the globe. War is still a daily struggle for many people, both young and old. There’s danger in almost every corner of the world.
Here at home, we’ve just gone through a very contentious election, and only half of the country is satisfied with the results. The ugliness of the campaigning has not completely disappeared as acts of hatred and discord continue to get our attention. But, even in the face of all of these troubles, we are entering the season of peace and tranquility. The celebration of Christmas seems to have magical powers that serve to soothe even the most hard-hearted. One of my favorite stories of this phenomenon is the Christmas truce of 1914 during the height of World War I. Unofficial ceasefires along the Western Front around Christmas that year allowed British, French and German soldiers to cross trenches to exchange seasonal greetings.

WeAreProsper.com | December 2016
By Mayor Ray Smith Men from both sides ventured into no man's land on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to mingle and exchange food and souvenirs. There were joint burial ceremonies and prisoner swaps, while several of these informal gatherings ended in Christmas caroling. Unfortunately, many American men and women still find themselves in harm’s way somewhere in the world, and Lena and I constantly pray for their safe return. Nevertheless, Christmas magic is all around us. The anticipation of the annual Prosper Christmas Festival, the Christmas parade, the tree-lighting ceremony, the Cops with a Claus program, Cornerstone’s Christmas event, and the many homes who have wonderful light displays all give us a chance to catch our breath and raise our thoughts to something bigger than ourselves. Christmastime means different things to different people, and many families celebrate it in very specific ways. How we spend these special days with our families and friends can create wonderful memories that we can cherish every year. I encourage each you to hold your family members closer and hug them tighter this Christmas season. And, finally, I can’t close out the year without expressing my sincerest thanks, and indeed my admiration, to each of our Town’s employees and volunteers. I am extremely proud of the work they’ve accomplished this year, and I hope they take appropriate pride in these accomplishments. From my family to yours, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

On The Horizon… From the Desk of: Dr. Drew Watkins Superintendent, Prosper ISD
T
his just in… Prosper ISD is growing! As many of you know, PISD tipped over the 10,000 student mark recently with no end to the growth in sight. With growth comes the need for new facilities. The District is in the process of finalizing the plans for MS#3 and will begin construction in the spring of 2017. The location of this school will likely be south of Hwy 380 and will be set to open in August 2018. We have held off on constructing any schools to open in August of 2017 because of the uncertainty with state funding – specifically as it pertains to ASATR (Additional State Aid for Tax Relief). For more information about ASATR, you can either reference the FAQ document on the district website or download a parent developed App (Prosper Parents) that provides information about proposed legislation and the effects on PISD. This issue will hopefully be resolved in the upcoming state legislative session, but until then we would have an issue staffing a new school that was opened in 2017. Surrounding districts are facing similar challenges – Frisco ISD will have four new schools constructed that they will not be able to staff and open next year due to the uncertainty of ASATR. Although the future of ASATR is undetermined and its impact on operational money, we still have needs that are long overdue. The District plans to finalize designs and begin construction on the new stadium as well as a new natatorium in June of 2017 to open in August of 2019. The location of these projects will be at the designated location adjacent to
12
WeAreProsper.com | December 2016
Frontier Park on the south side of Frontier Pkwy. On a similar timeline, we will begin construction on Elementary #8 in May 2017 to open in August of 2018. The location of Elementary #8 has yet to be determined but should be identified in the spring of 2017. And finally, HS#2 is slated to begin construction in the summer of 2018 to open in 2020. Of course, all of these projects are dependent on the economic growth of our school district that will allows the ISD to sell the appropriate bonds. If values support, the district could begin HS#2 in 2017 to open in 2019, but for now the projection is still for a 2020 opening. We currently have $525 million in authorization left from the $710 million bond issue that was approved several years ago. After these projects, we will have a balance of about $175 million remaining of the current authorization. There are many moving parts, but we are committed to preserving the culture of excellence in Prosper ISD. As always, we appreciate the patience and understanding of everyone as we navigate through these roaring rapids of growth. I wish I could say “this too shall pass”… and it will, but not for a LONG time here in Prosper. For those that might be asking, “Why are SO many people moving here?” I think the answer is right in front of us… the same reason we did. Have a great holiday and remember that even though our WE is growing every day… WE ARE PROSPER!
FIVE FESTIVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR FAMILY MATH FUN Keep Math Skills Sharp and Build Confidence This Holiday Season with Math Enrichment The most wonderful time of the year is here once again, and with holiday cheer come many lighthearted opportunities for math learning! “The holidays are the perfect time for parents to show their children the many practical applications of math outside of the typical classroom environment,” said Jennifer Sanchez, Owner of the Mathnasium of Prosper franchise. Encourage kids to explore math in their everyday lives while keeping their skills fresh with these positive, low-pressure enrichment activities: • COOKING AND BAKING: Bring your child into the kitchen with you and whip up your family’s favorite holiday treats! Read recipes out loud together and familiarize young learners with fractions, units of measurement, and conversions between units. Explore proportional thinking by increasing or decreasing quantities to feed more or fewer people while maintaining the appropriate ratios among ingredients. • GIFT SHOPPING: Set a shopping budget and ask your child to help you find gifts that maximize the budget. Holiday sales and discounts present great opportunities to explore percentages and demonstrate how math can help you make smart consumer decisions and make every penny count! • DECORATING AND HOLIDAY CRAFTS: Introduce younger kids to geometry by exploring basic shapes found in seasonal decorations. Make paper snowflakes together and explore symmetry. Use measurement and estimation to get a sense of how many decorations you need for the perfect touch of holiday flair! • FAMILY GAME NIGHT: When the weather outside gets a little too frightful, cozy up indoors for a family game night and play math-related board games! • HOLIDAY TRAVELS: Stave off boredom in transit and keep your child busy with activity books and games that involve math! If your travels take you to a destination where temperature is measured in degrees Celsius, ask your child to convert the temperature expressed in ˚C to its equivalent in ˚F. When traveling between time zones, explain time differences and work on converting the time at your destination to the time at home and vice versa. As you explore math over the holidays, “remember to keep it light,” Sanchez said. “Winter break is a time for kids to step away from academic responsibilities and celebrate with family and friends. Focus on exploring concepts, practicing skills, and expanding knowledge. Establishing connections among math, learning, and fun in your child’s world builds confidence and encourages a positive math mindset—an ideal foundation for math success come January!”

SAFE AND SOUND DURING THE HOLIDAYS How to manage noise aversion in dogs and strengthen the human-animal bond The holiday season seems to last longer and get more hectic every year. Whether cooking the Thanksgiving feast or doing last-minute gift shopping, everyone can get a little stressed out. Most people don’t know that their dog may also experience anxiety during these celebrations. According to an online survey conducted by Harris Poll and commissioned by Zoetis, 46 percent of dog owners reported their dog showed symptoms of stress during the holidays; that stress could be due to noise aversion. The survey also found that 44 percent of dog owners said their dogs suffer from noise aversion. Noise aversion is the set of fear-based behaviors that dogs display when subjected to “noise triggers.” During the year-end holidays, such noise triggers might be the doorbell, boisterous family gatherings, children playing with loud toys or New Year’s fireworks. During the busy holiday season, common behavioral signs of canine noise aversion include: panting, trembling or shaking, pacing or restlessness, vocalizing, hiding, owner-seeking behavior, cowering, refusal to eat, excessive vigilance or hypervigilance, and escape behaviors. Although noise aversion is common, dog owners often do not seek help from their veterinarians. One reason may be that pet owners recognize their dogs overreact to noise, but do not recognize that these behaviors are a demonstration of fear. This fear can disrupt the human-animal bond by causing anxiety for the dogs and stress for their humans. Therefore, it is important to seek treatment for your dog if he is displaying signs of noise aversion. Not only are these dogs distressed and suffering, but when left untreated, noise aversion can progress to a more severe state. “It is crucial to understand the level of physiological suffering that occurs with the stress and anxiety of noise aversion,” said Dr. Lynn Honeckman, a Florida veterinarian. “Ignoring the fearful pet during a noise event or using prescription medications as a last resort is not the standard of care as outlined by the American Board of Veterinary Behaviorists.” A new medication called SILEO® (dexmedetomidine oromucosal gel), the first and only FDA-approved treatment for canine noise aversion, is available via prescription from your veterinarian. It can be easily administered at home to calm your dog without sedating him for the duration of a noisy holiday event. The first dose can be given as soon as the dog shows signs of anxiety and fear, or approximately 30-60 minutes before a known fear- or anxiety-causing noise stimulus. There are additional ways to make your dog with noise aversion feel more comfortable. Dogs always need a safe place to call their own, and that can be especially true when they need comfort from loud celebrations. Sometimes a dim, quiet room or crate can provide comfort, while soft music can soothe other dogs. Don’t suffer through the holiday season with a fearful and anxious dog and a stressed family. If you think your dog is showing signs of noise aversion, consult your veterinarian for guidance on a solution that allows you and your dog to enjoy the holidays together. For more information about treating noise aversion in dogs, including prescribing information and important safety information, visit sileodogus.com. IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: Do not use SILEO in dogs with severe cardiovascular disease, respiratory, liver or kidney diseases, or in conditions of shock, severe debilitation or stress due to extreme heat, cold or fatigue, or in dogs hypersensitive to dexmedetomidine or to any of the excipients. SILEO should not be administered in the presence of preexisting hypotension, hypoxia or bradycardia. Do not use in dogs sedated from previous dosing. SILEO has not been evaluated in dogs younger than 16 weeks of age or in dogs with dental or gingival disease that could have an effect on the absorption of SILEO. SILEO has not been evaluated

for use in breeding, pregnant or lactating dogs. Transient pale mucous membranes at the site of application may occur with SILEO use. Other uncommon adverse reactions included emesis, drowsiness or sedation. Handle gel-dosing syringes with caution to avoid direct exposure to skin, eyes or mouth. SILEO has not been evaluated for aversion behaviors to thunderstorms. For full Prescribing Information, visit ZoetisUS.com/SileoPI.
Santa Paws 2016
Survey Methodology This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Poll on behalf of Zoetis from May 23-25, 2016, among 2,136 adults ages 18 and older (among which 887 are dog owners and 395 whose dog has experienced noise anxiety). In the survey, noise anxiety was defined as trembling, shaking, clingy, hiding, panting, pacing, whining or whimpering, cowering, escape behavior, or property destruction when exposed to loud noises. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated. For complete survey methodology, including weighting variables, contact Lindsey Goodman at lgoodman@archermalmo.com.

prepared just before you plan to cook the bird. • Heat oven to 325 F. Place turkey breast-side-up on a rack in a shallow roasting pan. One of the most memorable moments at any holiday dinner is when a moist, delicious turkey is brought to the table. Everyone grabs their forks at the sight of a perfectly brown bird glistening with juicy flavor. Make sure your holiday meal is a special one by following these simple tips for making the perfect holiday dinner:
• Lay a “tent” of foil loosely over the turkey to prevent over-browning.
Planning the Meal
• For easier carving, let the turkey stand at room temperature for at least 20 minutes.
• Get your plans in writing, including your menu, how many people will attend, any special dietary needs of guests and what time you plan to serve the meal. • Buy the turkey early, and look for a bird with a pop-up timer in the breast, which ensures proper cooking time. Learn more at volkenterprises.com. Thawing the Turkey • Thaw your turkey in the refrigerator for 24 hours per 5 pounds in weight. For example, a 20-pound bird takes four days to thaw. Thaw it faster by covering with cold water in the sink and changing the water every half hour per pound of turkey.
• The turkey is done when the meat thermometer is 180 F and the stuffing is 165 F. If you don’t have a meat thermometer, look for the red stem to go up on the pop-up timer, press a thumb and forefinger into the thick part of the drumstick to see if it feels soft or wiggle a drumstick to see if it moves easily.
Preparing Homemade Rolls • Purchase Frozen Rhodes Ready to Bake Rolls, which give you that original homemade taste with no preservatives. • Coat baking pan and large sheet of plastic wrap with nonstick cooking spray. Place frozen dough on the pan and cover with oiled plastic wrap so it won’t stick to the rolls as they rise. • Let rolls rise for 4-5 hours, until they double in size. Carefully remove the plastic wrap.
• Don’t unwrap a frozen turkey before thawing.
• While you are carving your turkey, put rolls in the oven at 350 F and bake 15-20 minutes, until golden brown.
• Refrigerate the turkey as soon as it has thawed, or cook it immediately.
• Brush tops with butter or olive oil, if desired.
Preparing the Bird • Baste the turkey with extra-virgin olive oil, butter, margarine or wine. • For an unstuffed turkey, place a stalk or two of celery, seasonings, a cut-up onion and a handful of parsley in the cavity to keep it moist. • If you stuff the turkey, pack the neck and cavity loosely with stuffing

• Dinner rolls can also be used to create side dishes or desserts, such as this Butterscotch Bubble Loaf. Don’t Forget the Add-Ons • Surprise your guests with something different from years prior, such as new recipes or add-ons. For example, if you serve salad add something new, such as olives, pearl onions, raisins, nuts or mandarin oranges.
• Mashed potatoes are expected. For a flavor kick, try adding mustard, garlic or other flavors when mashing. • Add color to your favorite green vegetables by placing pimento or strips of steamed red bell on top. • Try an unconventional take on stuffing, such as making stuffin’ muffins in muffin tins or serving stuffing inside an empty green bell pepper. Serving a Sweet Treat • Watermelon is a source of antioxidants and vitamins, and has more lycopene than any other raw fruit or vegetable.
We look forward to serving you with a mortgage strategy to make your dream of home ownership come true!
Planning for Leftovers • After two hours at room temperature, cooked food should be stored in the refrigerator. • If possible, carve the entire turkey before the meal and store the extras as soon as everyone has a plate. • There are many great recipes that feature leftover turkey, such as stir-fry with vegetables, wraps, tacos, burritos and, of course, good, old-fashioned turkey sandwiches. To help with planning and preparation, and for more delicious recipe ideas for your holiday gathering, visit culinary.net. To learn more about food promotion and view a photo gallery of classic celebrities, such as Bob Hope, Phyllis Diller, Abbott and Costello, Dinah Shore and others, with turkey and other foods, visit adventuresinpr.com.

Where There’s A Need There’s A Lion
L
ions International was created in 1917 to help others. With a motto of “We Serve,” it’s very clear that the establishment of this club is no different in its undertaking than it is today. Lions mission statement, “To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions Clubs,” leads it members to assist communities in many ways. Almost 100 years after its creation, the Prosper Lions Club was formed in 2015 by local residence who wanted to serve others in their community as well. Lions are usually known for their attention to vision screening and eyeglass donations, and the Prosper Lions do an outstanding job working to provide screenings and obtain glasses for children, but they also do a great deal more. Prosper Lions members assist with Cornerstone Christmas, Cops with a Clause, Texas Lions Camp workdays, Lions Eyeglass Recycle Center, Adopt-A-Street Cleanup, Prosper Christmas Parade, Carter Blood Drive, and many other areas where there is a need. Prosper Lions financially contribute to help with Organ and Eye Bank, Drug Awareness Council, Leader Dog Program, Sports Extravaganza, Texas Lions Camp, and many others as well. Locally, we also support both financially and in service Cornerstone Assistance Network and Bethlehem Place. The Prosper Lions meet twice monthly and meetings typically have guest speakers. Town Manager Harlan Jefferson, Prosper Mayor Ray Smith, and PISD Superintendent Dr. Drew Watkins have all been recent speakers at meetings. Not just focused on Prosper, speakers also come from charitable organizations to speak on topics such as the Julien C. Hyer Youth Camp, Leader Dog Program, Lions youth host families, and Sports Extravaganza. Prosper Lions raise the majority of their funds through membership dues and Lions Pancake Breakfasts. Please join the Lions for breakfast on December 10th from 7 a.m. – 11 a.m. at Rogers Middle School to see firsthand their fellowship, determinations to help others, and what a great group of giving people they are. Remember When
Early Ranching and Farming in the Prosper Area - Part I
Farming started in the Prosper area in the 1880’s. Prior to that time, cattle ranching was the major source of revenue for the settlers. There were not many settlers in the western part of Collin County before 1850, so most of the area had no inhabitants. This was virgin land that had not been grazed or cultivated. So, when the settlers began to move into the area, cattle ranching was the major way to make a living. It was helped because the popular “Shawnee Trail” came through the Prosper area. The Shawnee Trail began in the 1840’s and ended in the 1870’s. It is important to note that after the Shawnee Trail disbanded, the “Chisholm Trail” began. It ran from south Texas into Fort Worth and then north to Abiliene, Kansas. The Shawnee Trail started deep in south Texas, below San Antonio, then ran through Austin and Waco and crossed the Trinity River in Dallas. From Dallas, the trail basically followed Preston Road and Coit Road through Collin County and then through Grayson County until it crossed over the Red River at Preston Bend. After crossing the Red River, the trail traveled through Oklahoma and split at Fort Gibson, Oklahoma. One trail went to major cattle markets in Sedalia, Kansas City, St. Louis, Independence and Westport, Missouri. The other trail went through Baxter Springs and other points in Kansas. These were the nearest rail heads to market the cattle.
28
WeAreProsper.com | December 2016
Thousands and thousands of cattle traveled through the Prosper area. In 1866 approximately 250,000 head of cattle were on the trail to the markets in Missouri and Kansas. John and Charlotte Collins settled on some land in 1848 about one mile east of Rock Hill along Rock Hill Road. Their land included a large spring where cattle drovers from the Shawnee Trail
would bed their cattle down for the night and water their herds. This land became the Barlow Farm and the same family has owned it for six generations. It is currently owned by the Barlow family and the spring is still in existence today. During the time of the cattle drives, the Town of Prosper was not in existence, as Rock Hill and Richland were the communities that were here at this time. It is hard to imagine that cattle ranching was the largest source of revenue prior to 1880. I have a copy of a letter that Henry Parvin had written in March 1870 and in that letter, he stated that he sold 4,000 head of cattle in 1869. He also stated that he planned to sell another 4,000 in 1870 and would then get out of the cattle business. His land was northwest of Prosper located in the Good Hope/Parvin area, which was named after him. He, like other cattle ranchers along the Shawnee Trail, would include their herd with the others from the valley in south Texas as they went north to market. Sometimes a cattle rancher or a group of cattle ranchers would drive a herd to market with their own cowhands. These cattle drives were dusty, hot, cold, under extreme weather conditions and took long periods of time in reaching their destination. Many cattle, as well as cowhands, did not make it due to the conditions they faced. We tend to take cattle ranching as being easy, but it was indeed a very hard life. It required working from sunrise to dusk and seven days a week. Operating these ranches required many riders, horses, and other support people such as cooks, drivers for the wagons, branding, dehorning, castration, and marking the cattle with a trimming of the ears. This determined if the calf had been branded or not. The cattle were branded to make sure they were the legal owners as much cattle rustling was prevalent in the area. The large cattle ranches were in the area from the 1850’s through the 1880’s and then larger ranches begin to dwindle because it was determined that the land being used for cattle ranching was very fertile and some of the blackest and fertile land in Collin County. Farming began to become more popular although most farmers kept enough land for grazing purposes as to keep some cattle for their own use and to sell but not in great quantities. Farming was beginning to be the major source of revenue around the turn of the century. We will begin to discuss early farming in the prosper area next month.

PERSON OF THE YEAR 2015
Prosper has long been a destination for families looking to build their homes in a community with small town values, a school district that strives for excellence and a place where your neighbors treat you like family. We are proud, we are faithful and we love our town…but our favorite part of Prosper is the people. Those that go above and beyond to make everyone around them comfortable and happy. Those that step outside the box to make Prosper a better place. Those that love our kids as much as we do and want them to be successful not only in life, but as human beings. Those that see a need and get down to business to fill it. Yes, those people… they are what makes Prosper special and unique. They are the heartbeat of our town and we want to recognize them!! We have had some wonderful and most deserving individuals recognized over the years as Prosper’s Person of the Year – Dr. Drew Watkins, Jennifer Sanchez, Greg Wright and Stuart Blasingame. Every year we reflect on how incredible our town and its residents are and how hard it will be to get 5-6 new nominees that were as good as the prior year…but WE ARE PROSPER, and of course we always have more!! There are so many people that work behind the scenes making this is the best community in America, so let’s show them how much we appreciate them and all of their hard work and dedication. This year, we will be accepting nominations online through December 16th. We will then announce all of the nominees in the January 2017 issue – and we’ll open up online voting for our readers’ favorites on January 1, 2017. Readers will be able to vote online through January 15, and those votes will narrow down the field to the top 4. We will then highlight those individuals in the February issue…as well as announce our winner - 2016 Prosper Person of the Year!!
CRITERIA FOR ALL NOMINEES: - Must live or work in Prosper or Prosper ISD boundaries - Must have made a positive impact on the community in 2016 - Impact may include community service, job/economic growth, student development To make your nomination, please visit www.WeAreProsper.com and click on the link for PROSPER Magazine’s 2016 Person of the Year. Please be sure to include your nominee’s contact information so that we may contact them for photos and permission to be included in the event.
