Voted 2013 New Business of The Year PUBLISHERS Jason & Heather Reynolds Admin@CedarbrookMedia.com EDITORIAL/MARKETING DIRECTOR Heather Reynolds Heather@CedarbrookMedia.com CREATIVE DIRECTOR Jason Reynolds Jason@CedarbrookMedia.com

It’s so hard to believe that we are only weeks away from Christmas and less than a month away from 2018!! Seems like just a few days ago that we were wishing our family and friends a Happy 2017…time is flying by as quickly as our little town is growing! And with each passing minute and every new face in Prosper, we are reminded of how blessed we are to live in this community and to be able to raise our girls here. This truly is the most wonderful time of the year…and we are right where we want to be! What we love most about the Christmas Season is the spirit of giving and love. Amid the hustle and bustle of decorating, baking, shopping and holiday parties…there is a feeling at this time of year that you just can’t explain. A feeling of unity. A feeling of giving. A feeling of graciousness. It’s the spirit of Christmas and that spirit is strong in Prosper. Everywhere you look there are people doing good things. They are spreading holiday cheer in the best ways possible. And if you want to join in on the fun, there is no better way than to be a part of the giving! We have several ways to get involved – but nearest and dearest to our hearts is Cornerstone Christmas. This annual event has grown tremendously over the last several years. This year, there will be 86 families served, with a total of 205 children. The event helps to provide a Christmas for these families. Everything from food, coats, toys, stocking, a tree, decorations… every piece of the Christmas tradition has been thought of and donated with love. Cornerstone will need close to 1,000 volunteers this year, so there are plenty of opportunities to help… sorting toys and food, filling stockings, gift wrapping, or prayers – all types of help are appreciated! The impact this event has made on our children has been a gift that we’ll forever cherish. Please consider donating – whether it’s in the form of resources or your time…every little bit will help provide a Christmas to one of these families that otherwise would not have one.

Eagle HYPE

STATE CHAMPIONS..... Prosper Volleyball Leaves Their Mark By Heather Reynolds Prosper pride and school spirit are alive and well. After an incredible pep rally and an emotional State send-off ceremony on November 17th, Prosper fans filled the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland to cheer their Lady Eagles to victory. It was only the 2nd time in the school’s history that Prosper Volleyball has advanced to the State Finals. Head coach Erin Kauffman lead her team to a second-place finish in 2013. This year, after just coming off an exciting sweep of long-time rival Lovejoy to win Regionals, the Lady Eagles were pumped and ready to go. And behind them all the way was the amazing PHS student section, PISD administration and huge Prosper fan base. Over 1,500 fans showed up to watch the semifinals, and the majority of them were there to support the Eagles. The first matchup in the tournament for Prosper was against the Corpus Christi Tuloso-Midway Cherokees. Tuloso-Midway swept their way through playoffs to win the Region 4 championship. This was their 2nd time to advance as well, losing just last year in the Semi-Finals to Amarillo, who eventually took the state title. Prosper came out slow, falling behind 2-5 in the first set, but they soon battled back to tie it up 8-8 with a Hope Gramly kill. The Eagles battled back and forth with the Cherokees, falling behind again 12-15. Kills by Haley Killinger and Madi Whitmire tied it back up at 16, but the Cherokees

answered with two straight kills of their own. Prosper was relentless and with Kayla Martin’s defense, they tied it back up at 18, eventually taking the lead and winning the set 25-22. The start of the 2nd set was a rough one for the Eagles, as errors plagued them both in their offense and their serves. They fell behind 3-11 early. However, the Cherokees grappled with their own attacking errors, leaving the window open for Prosper to swing back in. Killinger and CiCi Hecht both came alive, and brought the Eagles back to within 3. Three straight kills from Gramly put Prosper back on top, but again, with their hitting and serving errors, quickly fell behind. Taryn Weber tied it back up at 23 with a block, followed by a Killinger service ace and a kill from Hecht to take the set 25-22. Prosper came out strong in the 3rd set, leading the entire time. Four straight kills from Taryn Weber allowed the Eagles to break ahead 15-6, and they never looked back. Key blocks from Gramly, Hecht and Weber kept Tuloso-Midway’s hitters at bay, leaving Whitmire to find Killinger for the kill again and again. Prosper took the 3rd set with a final score of 25-13. Prosper was then to face Leander Rouse Raiders in the State Championship on November 18th. The Raiders came into the game with a 49-3 record and were led by head coach Jacob Thompson. Prosper handily beat LeanderRouse 25-18 in the first set and it appeared the Lady Raiders were all but defeated. But Rouse, ranked number one in the state of Texas, would not go quietly, taking sets two and three 25-21 and 25-18, respectively. In set three, Prosper fell behind 15-5 early. Junior CiCi Hecht crashed into the media row while attempting to recover a ball and was down for a number of minutes as trainers, medical staff and coaches surrounded her, but she was able to walk back to the Prosper bench unassisted. With Hecht out of the set, and possibly the entire match, freshman Samantha Jacobs entered the game. Rouse capitalized on the fractured core of the Lady Eagles and eventually used that momentum to win the third set. The Lady Eagles came out for the fourth set with a do-or-die mentality. As

they battled back and forth, tying the score twelve different times and creating a maddening five lead changes, Prosper eventually overtook Rouse 25-23, forcing a fifth set. Aiding in that win was Hecht, who came back in with a bandaged wrist and hand when the Lady Eagles were down 0-3 at the start of the fourth. As Hecht entered play, the Prosper crowd went wild and there was an obvious shift in momentum for the Lady Eagles. “The adrenaline just took over”, said Hecht. “I wanted to be there for my team.” Rouse committed a few errors that the Lady Eagles used to their advantage in the fifth and final set of the championship. With the score tied at 12, senior Haley Killinger swept in for the kill. The score was 14-all and Killinger and Hecht teamed up for their final time. In the last play of the match, an injured Hecht jumped up and delivered the kill that earned the Lady Eagles the State Championship and solidified her as the MVP of the championship game. Hope Gramly said, “It goes to fifteen points for a reason, sixteen in this case, and when we started coming back I couldn't believe it.” “Our team is extremely mentally tough,” said Kauffman. “Anyone who watched sets two and three probably thought there is no way Prosper will win this. Our theme this year was 'Leave Your Mark' and I wanted people to walk out thinking Prosper put up a fight, even if the score had been flipped, people would have thought we put up a fight.”

GROWING Prosper with Jimmy Gibson Jr.

Want that lush green lawn year-round? Better get busy!

Is your Prosper lawn one of the common warm-season grasses, such as Bermuda grass, buffalo grass, zoysia or St. Augustine grass? Since such grasses go dormant in our fall/winter cool weather, most homeowners are faced with the prospect of enduring unappealing brown lawns during the winter. Fortunately, there is an alternative. It is known as "overseeding lawns." "Overseeding lawns" is just what it sounds like: namely, you're sowing seed over your existing lawn. But the seed you'll use in the current project is not seed for one of the warm-season grasses, but rather annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) -- a cool-season grass. Once it sprouts, annual ryegrass will provide you with a green carpet during the early fall and winter months, thriving in the cool temperatures. Just as importantly, annual ryegrass will die back when summer's heat returns, exiting just in time for warm-season grasses to take center-stage again. I stress the word, annual because the perennial type would persist and compete with the warm-season grasses, depriving them of sunlight, water and nutrients. You don't want anything that's going to stick around that long and take good nutrients from your dominant turf grass.

18

WeAreProsper.com | December 2017

The work entailed in overseeding lawns that are composed of warm-season grasses is similar to that for overseeding lawns that are composed of coolseason grasses. Note, however, that the latter is based on thinking that is fundamentally different from the former: • Seeds for the same type of grass are used (i.e., cool-season grass over cool-season grass). • And overseeding is not used as a temporary measure to get through the dormant season. Rather, when overseeding lawns composed of cool-season grasses, the object is to fill in bare patches (permanently, one hopes). Overseeding lawns that have warm-season grasses is not in any way meant to improve the overall quality of a lawn. This is the equivalent to the temporary "Facelift or Botox" for your yard! If the appearance of your lawn during the summer is unacceptable to you, and if the deterioration is too advanced for lawn renovation to be feasible, then you should consider tearing up the old lawn and starting a new lawn from sod. Preparations for Overseeding Your Lawn Mow the dormant lawn as low as you can. This will promote contact between seeds and soil (there will be less grass to get in the way of the seed). Another step you can take to promote contact between seeds and soil is

core aeration, or "lawn aeration." This step will help reduce lawn thatch, which stands in the way between grass seeds and the soil they would like to call their new home. Core aerators (or "lawn aerators") can be rented from local rental centers also. In severe cases, you may need to add a layer of topsoil before overseeding lawns. For instance, due to shallow tree roots popping up on the lawn, your topsoil layer may be too thin. Spread 1/4" of screened topsoil over such an area, and rake it in thoroughly. Okay, now you are ready! You'll need a spreader for this project. The bag of grass seed that you buy for overseeding lawns should have information on the back concerning recommended overseeding rates. Set your spreader to the recommended overseeding rate on the bag. The grass seeds must be watered properly, in order to germinate. Use just a fine spray, as you don't want to create a flood! The soil should be kept evenly moist, which may mean several waterings per day (depending on the weather), for approximately 7-10 days. After the grass blades sprout, you'll still need to water a couple of times per day. If you know your schedule won't permit this, then it may be time to start looking into automatic irrigation systems or maybe hire the neighbors kid??

Although annual ryegrass will die in the summer, conveniently making way for warm-season grasses to take over, the annual ryegrass will still, nonetheless, be around in spring, offering unwanted competition with warm-season grasses. One way to minimize this competition is to mow the annual ryegrass as low as possible in spring. By keeping it short, you'll at least minimize the amount of sunlight that the annual ryegrass robs from your main lawn, which will now be emerging out of its dormancy stage. The best time for overseeding lawns composed of warm-season grasses is pretty much NOW, SO YOU BETTER GET BUSY!! Until next time... Holly Ferguson Empowering, Passionate, and Unforgettable By Leslie Scott

retired. I stayed in Prosper for four years, left to go to Frisco to work and complete a master’s degree, and when my oldest child began kindergarten, returned to Prosper at Rucker.” When interviewing with Dr. Watkins for the position at Rucker, his description of Rucker was not glowing and she walked out thinking she didn’t know if she got the job, but she sure hoped she did. “It seemed like such a jewel, it’s where I started my career, and my connection to Judy Rucker. The stars aligned, and I became the Principal of Rucker and then just continued from there.” When asked if education is her calling and what she’s meant to do in life, she answers without hesitation and emphatically, “Yes. When others ask in trainings and conferences what could you see yourself doing besides education, I cannot come up with an answer. I cannot come up with anything else because this is my life. I love it. Probably sometimes at the lack of attention to my own family and my own kids, that’s how much I love it. Because if I’m needed, I go. I truly believe it’s a calling and I believe that education is a job that must be your passion and not a job. It’s your lifestyle, it’s in your every fiber, and it’s just who you are. That’s who we want to hire in Prosper – teachers that see the world through that lens and really go to the edge of the earth if that’s what needs to be done for our kids.” Holly says that in one word the best part of PISD is the kids. “Knowing the children as they grow up, to be able to know so many of the kids as they are going through the school and to be able to know their names and talk to them. One thing that blows me away, that I tell the new employees as we do the new employee hire sessions, is that this place is like no other place. A kid that you don’t even know, that you’ve never met in your life, you can walk into one of our buildings and they’ll hold the door open for you and they’ll ask you how you’re doing today and that’s a rarity in our society. Even for a kid to make eye contact with you has become a rarity in our society, but in Prosper it is alive and well. And I think it’s such a unique thing, but I think it’s one of those things so near and dear to my heart, and that’s what Prosper is at is essence. It’s really embracing that graduate profile and that we invest in kids at such a personal level that they see each

2017 Prosper Person of the Year Nominee Holly Ferguson’s resume reads like an educator’s dream. Current Associate Superintendent of PISD, Holly’s love of children, education, and Prosper shines through in all that she does. Born and raised in Texas, her pride and investment in the Prosper community and PISD show in everything about her. Prosper and PISD are fortunate to have Holly as a resident and a leader in the education system. When asked about the growth and development of Prosper: “I grew up in this area when Prosper was just Mahard Egg Farm. It’s pretty amazing when you think about what’s happened here in a short amount of time.” When meeting families and welcoming them to PISD, she says, “One of my favorite questions of families is ‘Where are you moving from and why Prosper?’ I get a wide range of answers, but I’m just blown away that people are moving here from everywhere. The reasons they choose Prosper is the schools and the families want their children to be in this small town and yet growing with a lot of opportunities being provided to the kids. It’s a great credit to the work educators do each and every day and what we are able to provide to all the different families.” Holly’s career titles read like a perfect resume. Current Associate Superintendent, she’s also held positions of Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, Executive Director of Curriculum and Learning Services, Principal of Rogers Middle School, Principal of Rucker Elementary, and teacher. She’s incredibly humble in how she’s accomplished so much in such little time. When asked if she’s always been in a leadership role in education, she answered, “No, I started as a teacher, teachers are leaders, so I guess yes. I began as a teacher at Prosper Elementary, which is now Rucker Elementary. I was a mid-year graduate and there was a job teaching 3rd grade. The person subbing that class was Judy Rucker, who was

With one attending Prosper High School and one at Reynolds Middle School, she is involved in PISD as a parent as well. “They both began as pre-k in Prosper and they are a bit of a rarity for kids to be here that length of time. I would love for them both to have their entire school career here in Prosper.” Holly isn’t only entirely all PISD business, she loves watching her boys play sports, loves to shop, which she calls her “therapy” and has a wonderful sense of humor which is evident in making jokes about her shopping therapy and that she can eat Mexican food “all day, every day.” She loves classic country music, “The old classic country. That’s pretty much what I heard when I was a kid growing up so it just takes me to a place. As strange as it may sound, my kids know those songs because that’s what’s on my playlist. It lets you escape and go back to a place and time, and that’s the power of music.”

It doesn’t take long to be in Holly’s presence to realize how insightful and thoughtful she is. Even her favorite TV show exemplifies her insight, intelligence, and caring. “This is Us – I just love that show. I think it’s so real and the writers are so unique in the way they spin the stories, but I think too it’s so relevant in the schools that we deal with all the different emotions that people go through and we never know what they are going through. So I love it, I think the story line is just wonderful.” Holly says she doesn’t have a bucket list. “I’m one of those people that lets life happen and I get so engulfed in the moment that I don’t always think of the bucket list things, which I probably should because life is precious. There are things I want to do, but I think of those as retirement when I have time. I don’t really think of them here and now; I guess I live in the moment.” Holly says without hesitation her favorite place is her backyard. Her connection to students, families, educators, and staff is invaluable and Prosper is better for having Holly Ferguson as a resident of the community and a leader in the PISD system. In His Presence

This is why King Solomon once wrote, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” (Proverbs 4:23) NLT Think about that for moment. Whatever you allow to enter in your heart… whatever you allow to stay in your heart…what’s in your heart determines the course of your life! Therefore it is critically important for us to guard what we allow in our heart, and what we allow to stay there. Devin Patrick Kelley not only allowed hate to just enter his heart, he allowed hate to fill his heart. And while his example might be extreme, the truth is that we are all guilty of allowing things to take up space in our hearts that do not belong there. And these things can lead us to do things we never thought we would do. So how do we take King Solomon’s advice and guard our heart from these very destructive things? Just like anything else, these things need time to grow; they don’t overtake us overnight. And we’re all smart enough to recognize these things in their infancy. If we’re going to guard our heart, we have to constantly be aware of things we’re allowing to come in and what we’re allowing to stay there. So as soon as you begin to feel things on the inside that could potentially lead to destructive behaviors, you need to immediately take some actionable steps to evict those things from your heart.

What’s Going On In Your Heart? A few weeks ago, just after concluding our Sunday morning service, my phone lit up with a news update that a man with an automatic rifle entered a church in south Texas killing more than 20 people. Over the next several days my heart grieved with those who lost loved ones in a senseless, horrific act of violence. But I also grieved for Devin Patrick Kelley, the man who carried out this crime, and wondered what would drive someone to do such a thing. The investigation by authorities discovered a very troubling past including domestic violence, and that he had been harboring a very intense hatred against his mother in-law who attended the church, although she was not there that Sunday. In Matthew 15, after a confrontation with a group of religious leaders, Jesus issued this warning, “But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you. For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.” (Matthew 15:18-19) NLT What Jesus is telling us is that these kinds of behaviors don’t take us by surprise; that we aren’t victims of our physical bodies acting independently of our will. They happen because we allow things like anger, jealousy, hatred, and lust to enter and reside in our heart.

22

WeAreProsper.com | December 2017

Anger is a very common emotion we all feel. But how do you deal with the anger once you begin to sense it? Anger has to be resolved quickly, or it will bleed over into other relationships, our career, and how we parent our kids. As soon as you begin to feel anger toward someone, you have to take some very intentional steps to forgive that person, whether they deserve it or not. Forgiveness may not have any effect on the one you forgave, but it will set you free from anger taking root in your heart. We all know what jealousy feels like, but how quick are we to squash it. Unresolved jealousy can make us bitter, and incapable of being nice to the person we’re jealous of. And the only way to rid our heart of jealousy is to genuinely celebrate with the person we’re jealous of. When lust enters your heart, it needs to be exposed. Hidden lust leads us to all kinds of destructive behaviors like bondage to pornography or even cheating on our spouse. Lust holds power over us when we keep it hidden in the dark. But once it’s exposed and brought out into the light, it loses its power over us. And hate has no business taking up any space in our heart. And the only real solution to hate is expressing unconditional love. As soon as you begin to feel the slightest touch of hate in your heart toward someone, you need to go out of your way to express unconditional love to them. Like Jesus told us, “Love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. 28 Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you.” (Luke 6:27-28) NLT What’s going on in your heart? I encourage you to examine your heart and aggressively take steps to evict what doesn’t belong there. Jim Lugar – Lead Pastor of Life Journey Church

New Year’s Decisions How your physician can turn short-lived resolutions into lifelong changes

Manju Pandey, MD

The holiday season is upon us once again. Around this time is when we formulate our thoughts on how well the year went, how it could have been better and, most importantly, how we’ll work to improve ourselves for the upcoming year and beyond – which leads to formulating our New Year’s resolution. For most, resolutions are nothing more than the punch line to a short-lived, two-week joke, often ending in complacency, frustration and uttering “maybe next year” under our breath. But this does not have to be your resolution reality. In fact, taking the appropriate steps can help transform those failed resolutions into successful, lifelong lifestyle changes.

One of the most pivotal steps you can take when creating your New Year’s resolutions is partnering with your physician to identify and create the proper plan for you. Your doctor serves as a trusted confidant who understands your individual needs and can help create attainable goals for you to work toward. They have insight to much more impactful factors in your life that play a significant part in your health, such as risk factors, family history, body type and various conditions – all of which can help identify what needs changed in your life. “I have patients who come to me looking for help with their resolutions every year,” said Manju Pandey, MD,

“Understanding that changes do not occur overnight is one of the most important things to take into consideration when evaluating lifestyle changes”

According to Pandey, the most common resolutions she sees revolve around weight loss, maintaining a healthier lifestyle, “It’s important to confide in and trust your physician for decreasing stress and focusing on family and relationships. guidance when you want to make serious life changes,” She goes on to say that many health-related resolutions Pandey concluded. “Regardless of your goals, we all know can be difficult to keep due to numerous factors, such as that no plan is the same for everyone. Community Embracing Special Ones for the Holidays by Christin Caple

Carnival games! A Bounce House! A visit with Santa! A huge bag with a teddy bear and a few toys to take home! Sound like fun? For 81 children in our local Prosper area, it was the Best Event Ever! On Saturday, December 2, an annual event called “Santa’s Little Helper” was held for these 81 foster children from ages 0-12. The local Prosper Chapter of YMSL, Young Men’s Service League, partnered with Embrace and worked side-by-side with Mary Wells, Director of Programs at Embrace, to make this event a spectacular one. Each year, Embrace holds this event at Rhea’s Mill Baptist Church. It allows foster children to have a night of fun and games while giving foster parents an evening of special respite care. Embrace has been holding this event for 8 years in order to provide a very deserving night out for parents who are fostering a child. Santa’s Little Helper evening consists of crafts, pictures with Santa, a Bounce House, dinner and snacks, and storybook time for about 80 children from birth to age 12. This year, Santa’s Little Helper Event was chosen to be the YMSL Ultimate Gift Event of the Year. Young Men's Service League, or YMSL, is a non-profit organization that initiates and encourages young men and their mothers to pursue philanthropic involvement in their community and provides an opportunity to enhance mother/son relationships. Since 2010, the National YMSL Chapters have been organizing Ultimate Gift, an allchapter philanthropy event that encourages the members of a chapter to

join together to accomplish a larger effort. As a result of the increasing growth within the chapters and across the United States, the new primary focus of the Ultimate Gift Event is to achieve a transformational impact for the approved Ultimate Gift Philanthropies. Transformation is a process of profound and radical change that orients a Philanthropy in a new direction and takes it to an entirely different level of effectiveness. Some of the projects have included the construction of playgrounds, makeovers of apartments, painting shelters/facilities, exterior painting of homes, and landscape cleanup. Many of the recipients have only dreamed of great ideas with no means of accomplishing their dream. What the philanthropies have learned is that with YMSL as a partner, those dreams can be met. The idea of the Ultimate Gift Event began as a spin-off from a novel of the same name written by Jim Stovall. The plot journeys the circumstance of a young man who must complete twelve separate assignments before

he is eligible for the mysterious “Ultimate Gift” in his grandfather’s will. Throughout his trials and tribulations, he is faced with many opportunities that change his mind and spirit, and of course, he realizes that he is a much better person because of all that he has done. Eventually, he earns the inheritance, but what he does with his riches will probably surprise you. The challenge that YMSL gives its members is to find a way to give an “Ultimate Gift” back to their communities as a kick-off to the giving season. The Prosper YMSL Chapter chose Embrace as the Ultimate Gift recipient this year. Embrace equips churches to reclaim the care of foster, adopted, and orphaned children. They provide direct services to children and families of Collin County, Texas and utilize their experience locally to work with churches and organizations across the United States to develop and sustain ministries of their own. Embrace was founded in 2007 in a small church in North Texas by Bruce and Denise Kendrick. By 2010, Embrace became a non-profit organization. To read further about this amazing story, please visit their website, www.embracetexas.org. The Prosper Chapter of YMSL includes 67 boys and 64 moms, and 90 percent of the Chapter contributed in some way to Ultimate Gift. Special thanks to the young men and moms of the Prosper YMSL Chapter for building seven different carnival games, volunteering during the evening event of Santa’s Little Helper to work the Carnival Games and prize tables, shadowing foster children during the event, and helping with set-up and clean-up. Special thanks also to the YMSL Philanthropy Ultimate Gift Committee Co-Chairs Jill Beitel and Becky Morris, and committee members Emily Smith, Denise Crawford, Jennifer Weddle, Becca Long, Bobbi Osborne, Kelly Smith, Lauren Davenport, Kristina Palmer Shedd,

Jennifer Kieffer, Jennifer Mullins.

and

Co-Chair Jill Beitel shared, “Being a part and partnering with Embrace brought a lot of joy to me personally and also gave the boys and moms so much joy. When you do the right thing with the right mindset, it is such a delight! The kids had a really fun night!” “YMSL Prosper was so excited to partner with

Embrace in our chapter’s first Ultimate Gift experience. It was so great seeing the joy in the kids’ faces at the event, and it was so special for our moms and boys to be a part of it,” Becky Morris, Co-Chair stated. Embrace Director Mary Wells happily said, “YMSL, you all rocked! Respite Night was great! Thanks!” Special thanks to these businesses for their donations: BMC West Building Supplies, Lowe’s, Home Depot, Cherry Berry, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Papa John’s. We can’t wait to find out next year’s YMSL Ultimate Gift Choice to embrace our community once again!
