January 2017 VOL V, Issue 5

Voted 2013 New Business of The Year Published by Cedarbrook Media Group, LLC Editorial/Marketing Director Heather Reynolds Heather@CedarbrookMedia.com Production/Creative Director Jason Reynolds Jason@CedarbrookMedia.com Senior Account Executive Michele Vasquez Michele@Cedarbrookmedia.com

Happy New Year Prosper!! It’s time to usher in a brand new year…2017 is here! And you know what that means – it’s time for the 5th Annual PROSPER Magazine’s Prosper Person of the Year!! We have many wonderful nominees again this year – check them out on page 32 and then get online and VOTE for your favorite! We will take the top 4 nominees from the online polls into the finals…visit www.WeAreProsper.com to cast your ballot. You have until January 20th to vote, then our selection committee takes over. They will decide who the winner is and we’ll announce it in our February issue, so be on the lookout!

PROSPER Magazine’s PROSPER PERSON OF THE YEAR 2016 VOTE TODAY!! www.WeAreProsper.com As we close out 2016, we are reminded of all of the wonderful gifts and blessings the year brought us. But amid all of the happiness, we also experienced great loss…this was a year that took the lives of two amazing men who we considered special friends and were true Prosper jewels – Dave Williams and Bill Hays. Both were true southern gentlemen and were sweet, giving souls. We loved them both so much and Prosper won’t be the same without their presence. However, each left a legacy for our town and it’s now up to us to carry on in their honor. Whether it is filling the need for local non-profits as Mr. Williams generously did year after year, or teaching our students about our town’s history as Mr. Hays did – we owe it to them and to our town. They were both highly respected individuals and they both loved Prosper deeply. We are going to live 2017 in their honor!

The Town

T wn Matters

By Mayor Ray Smith

If you’re like the majority of Americans, you’ve probably included “get healthier” or “exercise more” or “lose weight” or “eat better” as part of your New Year’s Resolutions. If so, I’ve got some tremendous news for you! Rather than be among the 98 percent of Americans who abandon their resolutions by mid-February, be among the 2 percent who keep them. And while you’re getting healthier, exercising more, losing weight and eating better, you can be helping Prosper repeat as the state champion in the IT’S TIME TEXAS Community Challenge! Last year, I challenged Prosper to win it all, and you came through. When I heard about the challenge, in which towns and cities compete against other similar-sized communities to demonstrate healthy habits, I immediately jumped at the chance to participate. One thing I told everyone last year was that I was not aiming for a participation trophy. I was in it to win it! So, this year we’re gearing up to compete and win it again. The program runs for 12 weeks, starting on Jan. 9 and concluding on March 31. The challenge rewards those communities who not only practice good healthy habits and lifestyles, but actively keep track of their progress on the program’s website – www.ITTCommunityChallenge.com. Last year’s win in our category earned us statewide recognition as the Healthiest Small Community in Texas, and we also won a large banner, the championship trophy and a $1,500 check. During a Council meeting after our victory was announced, we presented the $1,500 to Reynolds Middle School for their use in developing and implementing health-related programs. Reynolds was the Prosper ISD school that exhibited the most enthusiasm for the contest.

10

WeAreProsper.com | January 2017

This year, IT’S TIME TEXAS has increased the financial award to $1,800. If we win it again, we’ll do the same thing as last year – present the funds to the PISD school showing the highest level of energy, enthusiasm and participation in the contest. Let me emphasize again, we are not shooting for a participation trophy, we’re going for a repeat of the state championship! I know from my days as a highly-competitive athlete, you can’t do the same things you did during your championship season and expect to win again. To repeat the feat, we must increase participation and commitment, we have to take it to the next level, we have to dig deep and, well, you get the picture. Other cities have us in their sights, and other Mayors are pulling out all the stops to knock us off. That’s where you come in. Be sure to record all your good health habits, and after registering on www.ITTCommunityChallenge.com, log on and post your healthy selfies, keep track of your weight loss and show your commitment to good nutrition. That’s how you earn points for the Town’s championship bid. Individuals, families, companies, churches, organizations, school administrators, teachers, students, business owners, charitable and service organizations can all be part of our effort. Simply registering on the website earns us 1,000 points. Additional points can be scored by logging your healthy activities and uploading your healthy selfies. Take your phone with you to the gym, as you walk your dog, when you toss the football with the kids, and when you choose a salad instead of a burger, snap a selfie and post it. There is no limit to how many you can upload. Join me on Jan. 9 and stick with it until March 31. It’s a win-win for all of us!

Cover Story

Pinnacle Performance Center, owned and operated by Bryan Webb, is not a traditional gym! They are a private personal training studio specializing in strength and conditioning, weight loss, nutritional coaching, sport-specific training, and mobility enhancement. Each time their clients come in, they receive an unparalleled experience working with their elite trainers in their very own training suite. This means their clients never have to worry about distractions, someone stealing their equipment, or feeling awkward inside the gym. They get results by focusing on the individual and motivating their clients to achieve their maximum potential through fun, engaging workouts.

Bryan founded Pinnacle Performance Center on the idea that you don’t necessarily have to be an athlete to train like one. It is their belief that every person is a unique individual, and should be treated as such. They are passionate about improving human performance and they love helping their clients overcome obstacles they once thought impossible. Their vision is to create a community where individuals can push past their comfort levels, break down performance barriers, and change their lives. Their mission is to recognize the indomitable spirit that lies within every individual and to call that out through fitness by providing personalized coaching to every client who walks through the door. Bryan Webb grew up a native Texan, and attended the University of North Texas, which is where he met and fell in love with his wife, Miranda. In addition to training, they love being outdoors with their dog, Dakota, and their horse, Sapphire. Bryan earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Kinesiology from UNT as well as 2 specialty certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine: 1) Performance Enhancement 2) Corrective Exercise He has nearly 10 years of personal training experience. During that time, he has worked with kids as young as 8, who are just starting out in sports, to people in their 80’s whose goal was simply to be able to go for a walk without being out of breath. He has also trained athletes at every level of competition – from high school to college, professional and even Olympic level athletes. Bryan and Miranda are still very new to Prosper, but they love being a part of such a wonderful community! The small town feel where so many people care about each other and want to see you succeed is a rare find these days. They think Prosper has a bright future ahead as it continues to grow, and feel blessed to be a part of that. If the last 10 years has taught Bryan anything, it’s this one undeniable fact: anyone can improve their health and performance as long as they are willing to push themselves to excel! Whether you are an elite athlete looking for a competitive edge, or just beginning your fitness journey, Pinnacle Performance Center is truly committed to delivering a training experience that’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen before! New Year’s Special: Stop by for a tour of their facility, and receive 3 Free Personal Training Sessions!!

Dr. Brandon Stephans TOP DOCS 2017 Dr. Stephans is Prosper’s longest serving chiropractor. He has owned Functional Health Centers, located in downtown Prosper on Broadway, since 2010. Dr. Stephans graduated from Parker College of Chiropractic in 2005. He and his wife, Angie, have two daughters – Sophie (3) and Rylee (19 months). At Functional Health Centers, they take a unique approach to healthcare in that they look at the underlying cause of the issue, as opposed to looking at just the symptoms the way traditional healthcare does. With all of the recent changes in healthcare, Dr. Stephans began noticing that patient care was suffering and becoming unaffordable. With that conclusion, he decided to make a change in their office – make healthcare affordable and allow patients to receive the care they need. The result? Happier and healthier patients!

For those patients who have anxiety towards treatment, they offer several options to make your visit comfortable, including Nitrous Oxide, Oral and IV Sedation.

A happy, well informed patient is the key to a successful Dental Practice. Dr. Chandler believes what sets him apart from others is his philosophy on Dental Care. He lives his life by the Golden Rule of the Bible - Do to others as you would like them to do to you (Luke 6:31). When treating his patients, he pretends he is the one in the chair. How he interacts and treats them is the same way he would want someone to treat him. Rarely does this philosophy not allow him to have a successful outcome, and hence a happy patient.

Remember When

Early Ranching and Farming in the Prosper Area - Part II

F

arming began to gain momentum around the turn of the century. Keep in mind that farming was the most popular way to make a living during this time. Ranching was beginning to fade and there was no industry in the area. The only jobs available were working in the communities that had business establishments and there were not many of those. So, farming was basically the only revenue available. Cotton was the major crop from the late 1800’s and was “king” for about one hundred years until the 1990’s. Wheat, oats and corn were also grown in the area but not as much as cotton. Maize was also grown but not as popular as cotton, corn, wheat and oats. Life on a farm was not easy. It was a solitary life. These farmers worked six days a week from sunrise to sunset. Sometimes they even worked seven days a week if a crop had to be harvested. Most farmers grew most of their own food and had vegetable gardens with all types of vegetables, such as potatoes, peas, green beans, onions, tomatoes, watermelon, cantaloupe, lettuce, cabbage, etc. In addition, they had fruit and pecan trees, some of which were native and some that were brought from the east when they came to this area. The wives canned many of the vegetables and fruits to be used for a later time. The farmers (both husband and wife and children who were old enough to do the chores and work in the field) started very early before sunrise. Each one in the family had certain chores to do each day. Most farmers had cows, pigs, chickens and horses to feed and care

28

WeAreProsper.com | January 2017

for. The cows supplied milk and cream (for butter) and also beef for food. The pigs were a major source of food as “hog killings” were held about the time the first cold snap hit the area. Chickens supplied the eggs and a source of food. Basically, the horses were used to work in the field and for transportation to and from town, church or family gatherings. During the early years the horse and buggy was a major transportation mode until the train and automobiles came into the area in the early 1900’s. After breakfast, there were always chores to be done, slopping (feeding) the pigs, feeding the cows horses and chickens. Then it was off to the fields to work all day, except for lunch. The wife would cook breakfast, complete her chores, go help in the field, return home to prepare lunch and then go back out to the field. She would come home in enough time to prepare supper. Afterwards, they had additional chores such as gathering eggs and feeding all over again. They also had a garden to maintain and this took time. They essentially had no social life. First of all, they had no time and second it was so far to the neighbor’s home. The only type of social life was church activities and Sunday was normally set aside for church. Most of the farmers were very religious and believed in God and set aside Sunday for a time of worship. Church would be an all day affair. They would come to church in the morning on their horses

or horse and buggy, attend church service and then they would have a lunch. Every family would bring food and they would spread the food and have a large social gathering. In the afternoon, there would be games for the children. The women would sit around and talk and the men would socialize by playing games such as dominoes, horse shoes, washers or baseball. They had to leave early enough to return home in time to do the evening chores. There were some school activities but not as much as church. For water, most farmers dug a well. They also put gutters around their house to catch the rainfall and the water from the roof flowed into a cistern. They had to heat the water for baths and for washing dishes and clothes. Most houses had a fireplace that was used for heating the house and for cooking. Later on, cook stoves became available and wood would be placed in the cook stove. There was no electricity so lamp oil was used for lighting and then kerosene lamps were used. Washing clothes was done outside in a large cast iron pot. This was heated by wood and lye soap was handmade. The clothes were rinsed and usually hung on the fence to dry or if you were lucky you had a clothes line. This was two poles in the ground a few feet apart with a clothes line (cloth or steel) running from one pole to the other and the clothes were hung on this line. I can remember clothes being hung out to dry on a cold winter day and the clothes would freeze on the barbed wire fence. The only post office was in Rock Hill. Rock Hill was a community that was just beginning and was located at the intersection of Preston Road and Rock Hill Road. This was about two miles south of Prosper, although you must remember that Prosper was not founded until 1902. So, people to the north of this intersection had to travel miles to get mail and news from the outside was slow coming in. In 1893, Prosper finally got a post office and it was located at the corner of Coleman Street and Prosper Trail. Bill Hays is the author of 2 books, which document the history of Prosper Texas: Its History and Families, Volumes I and II. To purchase a book, please contact Bill Hays at: Billhays@prodigy.Net or 972-569-9062.

It is in sadness and disbelief that Bill Hays passed away on December 23rd. We lost a true Prosper treasure, as so much our town’s history lies with him, and we are grateful to have heard his stories. Bill, you were a wonderful friend and colleague. We miss you and will continue to miss your partnership and contributions. Our condolences to your family.

Meghann Head

5% Senior, Military, and Local Heroes discount

She spends countless hours pouring into the children in and around Prosper. She is the head of the children's ministry at Prestonwood Baptist Church. She goes above and beyond running the children's program. It is evident that she truly cares about the children and wants to make an impact on their lives. Reaching out to the little ones in our community is crucial to their development. Meghann works hard to Know the children by name. Her care doesn't stop at the church doors. She reaches out to families and equips them with resources that they can use in their parenting. We have personally been blessed by Meghann since we moved to the area. I know many other families can say the same.

Holly Ferguson If you have ever met Holly Ferguson, you will never forget her... and she will never forget YOU! Mrs. Ferguson, who is the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for PISD, makes an unforgettable, positive impact on all who come into contact with her. As a former principal in the district, she was truly a servant leader, offering the best of herself to her students, staff, and families each and every day. Give her a few minutes and she can still name every former student, their parents, and their siblings! That same level of care and attention to detail she gave to all as a principal, is now impacting the entire district. She plays a major role in bringing quality professional development to staff members for continued growth that directly impacts student success. She empowers PISD educators by giving them multiple opportunities to grow and learn in order to enhance the level of instruction our 21st century students deserve. Aside from all she does for Prosper education, she leads with integrity and has a heart the size of Texas! She genuinely cares for the families of Prosper and so many of her subtle and unknown random acts of kindness make her a true Prosper Person of the Year! If possible, I’d like to keep this nomination anonymous. Thank you for your consideration!

5 important benefits of family time With work, school, homework, after school activities, friends and more, there are countless activities that compete for time on the family calendar. Family time, however, can serve as an escape from the demands and deadlines of daily life, and is paramount in building strong relationships. Family time offers many benefits, including building confidence, creating a stronger emotional bond between family members, improving communication skills, better performance in school and reduced behavioral issues, as well as providing an opportunity to make memories built on fun, laughter and togetherness.

Family Bonding Spending time partaking in everyday family leisure activities has been associated with greater emotional bonding within families. Both “core” leisure activities, such as playing a board game, watching television, gardening or playing outdoors and “balance” activities, which require a greater investment of planning, time and money, such as a family vacation or trip to an amusement park or sporting event, can have a big impact on the overall health of a family, according to research published by the National Council on Family Relations. Simply making it a habit to display interest in the well-being of your family members can lead to a willingness to share problems and build mutual respect between parents and children.

Academic Performance Children whose parents spend time with them and take an interest in their education tend to do better in school and complete higher levels of education than those whose parents spent their time at home pursuing their own hobbies, according to a study published on familyfacts.org. Providing essential guidance through studying and assisting with homework, as well as incorporating educational games, can provide children a positive

36

WeAreProsper.com | January 2017

influence, lead to emotional well-being and help them strive for higher levels of educational success as they grow.

Communication Skills Children learn how to behave and communicate by watching their parents interact with each other and others. Family bonding time is a way to model expected behaviors, and spending time together as a family can help parents relate more to their children and open the lines of communication. Spending a few minutes together once everyone is home for the day, whether for dinner or a scheduled family “meeting,” can help families learn to listen to, trust and understand one another, and build appropriate behaviors.

Risky Behavior On average, adolescents who communicate and spend more time with their families tend to exhibit lower levels of aggression and antisocial behavior than peers with less involved parents, according to familyfacts.org. A closer family relationship has also been linked to reductions in acts of violence, delinquent behavior, substance abuse and tobacco use. Communication and spending time together can help relieve feelings of anxiety or anger and reduce urges to participate in risky behaviors.

Making Memories One of the most important benefits of spending time together is also one of the simplest: creating memories that will last a lifetime. Whether it’s playing a game together, attending an event, going on vacation or just sitting in the living room or around the table talking and laughing, positive memories are beloved possessions that give family members a sense of belonging and can help reinforce the importance of family.

Simple Ways to Enjoy More Family Time Skillfully balancing an entire family’s demands from school, sports, activities and careers leaves little down time, but keeping family values front and center may be easier than you think when you make a commitment to carving out meaningful moments to share. Unplug from the digital world. Today’s technology-ridden world makes it easy for families to be present but not engaged. When you create a technology-free zone, you eliminate distractions so you can keep the focus on each other. Dedicate time every week to spend as a family without the use of TV, tablets, computers and phones. Bond and bake together. There’s a little baker in everyone. After all, who can help but “woohoo” when you pull fresh cupcakes out of the oven? Take a little time to embrace your inner Doughboy, turn your kitchen into a fun zone and savor all the moments with your family. One easy way to get started is with Pillsbury™ Purely Simple™ baking and frosting mixes, which use simple ingredients and contain no colors, preservatives or artificial flavors, providing a delicious homemade taste. They’re the perfect mixes to challenge your family to enjoy a kitchen full of laughter, anticipation and the delightful aroma of baked goods fresh from the oven. Share family stories. Reminiscing about special family moments is an essential part of keeping those memories alive. Showcasing old photo albums is a great way to share fun and nostalgic memories, which can help bring your family closer together. Whether it was a trip to the mountains or visiting a nearby museum, discussing and reliving these memorable moments can evoke fond memories and a willingness to create new ones. Set a day each week for family night. It’s easy to get caught up in a busy schedule, which is why consciously setting aside family time is essential. Once it’s set, you may be tempted to turn the open night at home into an invitation to catch up on housework or even just relax. Avoid the temptation and instead look for fun ways to spend that time as a family. Start a puzzle or play a board game. Initiate a DIY project for the house, spend time baking or cooking a meal, or simply sit together and talk about what’s happening in the lives of those who matter most.
