New Year, New Decade! Wow, wow, WOW! Who can even believe that not only did we just blow through another year – but that we began a brand-new decade? 2020…just unbelievable. And seriously, how is it even possible that the 80’s were FORTY years ago – that’s the true craziness of it. And yet, here we are. The year 2020. We’re about to make this new year and this new decade incredible. We did something a little bit different this year. We always set goals for ourselves for the new year…but this year we included our kids. We all sat down together and wrote down our goals for ways that we can be better in 2020 – ways that we could improve ourselves, our finances and ways to be better at our jobs (or school for the kids). We said them out loud to make them REAL and we promised to hold each other accountable. Y’all…they blew us away with their thoughtfulness in their goalsetting. It’s amazing what they can do when given the opportunity. We’ll be putting our goals away with our Christmas decorations this month – and cannot wait to unload them in November to see how many things we’ve achieved as a family! As we think back on what the last decade brought to our community, we are truly amazed. We’ve been here for right at 10 years and the growth that our town and our district has experienced is amazing. We’ve seen Preston Road, First Street, Coit and Prosper Trail go from 2 lane blacktop roads into divided roadways with stoplights. Our student population has TRIPLED. We opened our first grocery store – and then our second. Our first car dealership…our first retail shopping center…and our beautiful TOWN HALL. Our eating establishments are now plentiful – as well as our new school campuses. Multiple story office buildings, urgent care facilities and our state of the art FOOTBALL STADIUM!! So many changes for our little town in the last 10 years…and we’re just getting started!! We hope you’ll join us for the next 10 in continuing to make Prosper the Place Where Everyone Matters! Blessings to our Prosper families and here’s to a PROSPEROUS New Year!! With Prosper Pride,

Family
New Year’s Resolutions for Families Resolutions can be easy to give up on, mostly because they are all about YOU in a world where you’re constantly focused on taking care of everyone else. We have entered into not only a new year, but a new decade…so why not try making a new annual tradition of establishing family resolutions? We chose to call ours “goals” and we each picked one for bettering ourselves, our finances and our jobs/school. We wrote them down, shared them as a family to keep each other accountable, and will pack them up with the Christmas décor…so when we get everything out next year, we can look back on what we wanted to achieve and see how well we did! Need some ideas to get your family started? We’ve got them for you – and they are fun, easy and are sure to benefit your entire family unit! UNPLUG! We spend so much of our time on electronic devices these days…for work and for play. When was the last time you and your family spent a day “unplugged” without watching any TV, looking at your cell phones, following your social media accounts or checking your email? Set a goal to spend at least one day each month, better yet – each week, without your devices. Use the time to play board games, enjoy the outdoors and simply communicate face to face with the people who mean the most to you. EAT WELL Committing to eat healthy meals as a family can replace the need for the latest fad diet plan. Even if you and your children are a healthy weight, seeing their parents keep healthy eating habits can positively shape their relationship with food. Talk about what constitutes healthy eating as a group and come up with a meal plan together. Involving your children in the planning, shopping and cooking can help them be more interested and more willing to try new things at mealtime. EXERCISE It’s easy for your exercise resolutions to fade quickly in the wintery weather. However, you can make fitness fun and easy by doing family activities that get you moving. Take the dogs for a walk, have an indoor dance party or go for a bike ride. We are lucky that our winters are pretty mild, so as long as you cover your head and hands, you can beat those winter blues with some physical activity all winter long in Texas! READ How many books do you or your children have on your bookshelves that you’ve never even cracked open? When was the last time you took a trip to the Library? Why not make 2020 the year that you all become
10 | WeAreProsper.com
bookworms? Get recommendations from your children’s teachers or the local librarians to select appropriate reading levels for your kiddos. Think about topics that you might want to read up on as well – and keep a family reading chart. During one of your family UNPLUGGED times, you can devote some time summarizing what you’ve been reading with one another. DO CHORES If you don’t already have a system to spread out the daily responsibilities in your home, now is the time to make one! Not only will it alleviate the stress of the work falling on one single person, but it’s a great way to build confidence in your children! Knowing that they have fulfilled a task that helps the entire family gives them a sense of belonging and importance. Assigning chores and reminding kids to do them may seem daunting and like a chore in itself – so try keeping a chore jar with slips of paper for kids to pick which job they’ll do that week, such as taking out the trash or running the vacuum. BE KIND TO EACH OTHER Could your family use a little more kindness? A little refresher course on manners may be all that is needed to put a stop to the whining, refusing to share or forgetting to use those magic words with each other. Bear in mind that children learn how to be kind by watching their parents’ actions, so try to be intentional about complimenting your partner and being compassionate during disagreements. Another great way to teach your children kindness is through community service. There are many local organizations that could really use volunteers to carry out their missions. GET MORE SLEEP More than likely, you’d do anything for a little more restful time in your
bed, but your kids would fight tooth and nail to stay up an hour later watching their favorite show. The fact is, everyone needs an average of at least eight hours of sleep to stay healthy and be productive. Create a bedtime routine checklist for help your younger kids settle into a better sleep schedule and talk with your teenagers about their nightly routines. You can also implement some great ways to unwind yourself – a cup of tea, a warm bath or simply turning off your devices and reading. SAVE MONEY Start the new year and the new decade off right by managing your debt and saving money every way you can. Make a budget – and stick to it! Teach your teens and younger children how to manage money too. It’s never too late to establish good financial habits! Setting goals with your kids will make them better with money down the road as well. LIVE GREEN Sure, living “green” is good for the planet, but it’s also good for your family and your pocketbook. Check with your local town or private recycling program to make sure you are recycling everything you can. Buy reusable grocery bags and purchase organic whenever possible to keep harmful pesticides off your plate. SCHEDULE MORE DATE NIGHTS This one is for the parents. Oftentimes we can get so wrapped with our children’s activities and our jobs that we begin to lose focus on the number relationship we have. When was the last time you went out on a real date? Date nights help you and your spouse connect – over wine glasses instead of bottles and sippy cups! So, book a babysitter or a relative regularly, preferably at least once a month. Your marriage will benefit from a little romance and quiet time!

Town Matters
A Successful 2019 Leads to an Exciting 2020 By Mayor Ray Smith
The start of a new year is a time filled with the kind of enthusiasm that we don’t usually feel at any other time of the year. The optimism of a fresh start, the promise of a new beginning, the pardoning of personal shortcomings, and the resolution to both be better and do better all come together as we enter the new year. Add to all that excitement the fact that 2020 is the start of a new decade, a leap year, an election year, and an Olympic year! We’re also expecting more growth and development in Prosper. Our Public Safety Complex will open its doors, along with many other retail, commercial, and residential projects throughout Town. The new year will most certainly be a busy time for us. But, it’s not like we’ve been sitting on our hands during 2019! The year just ending saw quite a bit of activity all over Town. Our staff has been actively working to keep Prosper ready for what can only be described as regular growth spurts. Staff has worked during 2019 to bring about all of the tremendous annual events like the Community Picnic, National Night Out, Mayor’s 100-mile Challenge, the various Community Clean-up events, the Arbor Day celebration, the Coffee and Lunch with the Mayor updates, and of course, the Prosper Christmas Festival. Even with all the work that goes into these annual events, staff and volunteers went the extra mile in 2019 with a bevy of new programs, projects, events and activities. These include the implementation of an entirely new trash and recycling collection system, completely altering how we deal with solid waste. The elevation of our Fire ISO rating happened last year, even though work on that change began a few years ago. We conducted a survey on residents’ preferences on broadband internet service to better prepare us for the future.
12 | WeAreProsper.com
In addition to the annual Citizens Police and Fire Academies, the Town is getting ready to develop and promote a Citizens Government Academy, whereby citizens can learn more about how the Town is run, and what it takes to keep the wheels of progress rolling. An online reference tool on where the Town was working on right-of-way projects was launched, and the community came together in a vocal way to share our opinion on the expansion of Hwy 380, with lots of staff work behind it. The Town partnered with Collin County on a new transit system for our residents who need it, and for commuters, we installed cameras at most of the railroad intersections to give drivers a look at the traffic situation in real time. We proceeded on several large and small street, road, and intersection constructions and expansions. We opened the 407 Rec Center for active adults and added recreational programs for all ages. We introduced DownTown Live to great reviews. And this is just a small taste of what the staff and Council worked on during 2019. It was a busy year for us, and we anticipate that 2020 will be just as busy if not more so. Get ready! Regardless of the flurry of activity, remember to take good care of yourselves. Keep this in mind when you set your New Year’s resolutions regarding eating and exercise, only two percent stick with them after February 15. Be a Champion and fight through the urge to abandon your goal. Lena joins me in wishing everyone a very happy and prosperous New Year!

Orangetheory Fitness: More Than a Gym Trying a new workout can be scary, but the Certified Personal Trainers at Prosper’s Orangetheory Studio want you to feel at ease from the moment you walk in. Their one-hour workout is designed for all fitness levels and YOU set the pace. Walk, jog, run or bike – this is your hour and your chance to achieve your goals to become fitter, stronger, BETTER! Orangetheory is group training made personal…you can always count on your coach to ensure that you are performing workouts safely and effectively. The Trainers at OTF have one goal in mind: to make sure anyone who tries it feels successful.
OTF’s total body workout, paired with the science of the Orange Zone, ensures that you maximize your 60 minutes in the studio. The workout is different every single day – you’ll never do the same one and each is developed by a personal training team, reviewed by a medical board, and field tested before it ever hits the studio. And to make it as easy and convenient as possible for you if you’re traveling or out of your regular routine for the day…every studio across the nation does the same workout. No more excuses for missing a workout! Workouts are personalized to your goals and there are modifications for every exercise. With the changing workout each day, you will not only continue to challenge and change your body, but you’ll have FUN! Before creating the Orangetheory workout, Ellen Latham ran her own Pilates studio. She noticed that her clients were still working with personal trainers because they wanted to burn fat, which Pilates alone couldn’t do. So, she developed a workout that would “metabolically change the body” and the Orangetheory workout was born. It is comprised of five heart rate zones based on your individual heart rate. OTF workouts are strategically designed for you to spend at least 12 minutes or more in the Orange Zone to get your heart rate between 84 to 91% of your unique heart rate maximum. When your heart rate is elevated, you’ll start to see and feel real changes in your body. Science suggests you maximize the benefits of exercise when you get your heart rate up – which is why Orangetheory considers their workouts the “multivitamin”. It’s truly a full body workout that changes the body from the inside out.
Your First Class Is FREE! Book your first workout and arrive 30 minutes prior to class time. A team member will ask you about your fitness goals as well as find out if you have any orthopedic issues they should be aware of. After explaining how the class works, your coach will lend you a heart rate monitor to wear. You will start either on the treadmill, bike or strider for the cardio portion or on the rower for the strength training portion, which includes floor exercises with the TRX systems, benches and free weights. Your coach will explain how to do each floor exercise. Be sure to listen closely and don’t be afraid to ask questions! After your workout, your coach will lead the class through a cool-down stretch. After class, you receive a workout summary with your results, which includes the total number of Splat points earned, minutes spent in each heart rate zone, calories burned and heart rate statistics.
OTF is not all work and no play! They have events, challenges, socials and more. What you’ll find when you walk into the Prosper Studio is that you’re surrounded with workout partners that help to motivate and inspire you, as well as keep you accountable. It is truly a community atmosphere where you get to know the other members. And since the workouts are so customizable, there are people working out there that are ages 14 – 70! The Prosper Studio is also very actively involved with the community and has participated in many events – including the Homecoming Parade, Summerfest and Pumpkinfest. They also partner with 31 other DFW locations in the OrangeLove Program – a fundraising program where members check in on social media using that month’s charity as a hashtag. It’s a great way to spread awareness of local needs and raise money!

Mayor Issues 100-mile and 500-mile Fitness Challenges
A downsized version of the adage, attributed to Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, that a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step certainly applies to the 2020 Mayor’s Fitness Challenge. With that first step, officially starting on Wednesday, January 15, Challenge participants can begin notching miles by walking, jogging, running or biking, toward meeting either the Challenge’s goals or by surpassing the minimums and meeting their own personal stretch goals. Official tracking ends at midnight on Wednesday, April 15. As before, Prosper residents who complete and submit a tracking sheet by the deadline, Monday, April 20, and who complete a minimum of 100 miles afoot, or 500 miles riding self-propelled, will be recognized at a Town Council meeting, receive a complimentary T-shirt, and have a chance at winning a Fitbit watch. “If one of your New Year’s Resolutions was to get in shape, this year’s Challenge is a tremendous way to start. There are few things more important than good health,” says Mayor Ray Smith. “I encourage residents to form walking, jogging, running, or biking groups. That way, we can hold each other accountable. I’ll be logging my miles, and I hope to see my neighbors and friends doing the same thing.” Online registration is now open at www.prosperparksandrec.org. There are two ways to keep track of miles, electronically or on paper. A fillable tracking sheet can be downloaded from the website to participants’ computers or mobile devices and miles can be posted electronically. Or, the tracking sheet can be printed for logging miles manually. Paper copies of the tracking sheet can be obtained at either Town Hall, 250 W. First Street or at Parks and Recreation, 409 E. First Street. “The Parks and Recreation Department challenges everyone to get outside and enjoy a Prosper park during the Challenge,” says Dudley Raymond, Director of Parks and Recreation. “The hike and bike trails in Town are ready and waiting for you!” Updates on the Mayor’s Fitness Challenge will be placed on the Town of Prosper Parks and Recreation Facebook page. Participants are encouraged to share adventures on their social media accounts. Details and more information can be obtained by calling 972-569-1160 or by contacting Trevor Helton at trevor_helton@prospertx.gov.

Starting a Home Remodeling Project 7 Tips for Choosing a Qualified Contractor
utside of your home itself, remodeling is typically one of the largest investments you can make as a homeowner. While some projects can be tempting to tackle yourself, many larger-scale projects may require hiring a qualified professional.
O
Because remodeling your home is a big undertaking, it’s important to take steps to ensure the professional you hire to perform the work is qualified to complete it to the highest standards of quality and integrity. Consider these tips from the experts at the National Association of the Remodeling Industry to help you make an informed decision when hiring a remodeling contractor. Get Recommendations One of the best ways to find qualified, professional help is through word-of-mouth referrals. Ask your relatives, friends, neighbors or coworkers – particularly if they’ve recently renovated their own homes – if they have any previous experience with companies they would recommend. Also consider searching online for reviews of companies in your area.
20 | WeAreProsper.com
Stay Local It’s often best to consider established local remodeling companies first, as they are typically more compelled to perform highquality work, which allows their businesses to thrive and remain in the community. Local professionals are also likely to know permit requirements and building codes in your city or county, which can change from year to year. Follow Your Design Aesthetic Whether your home features a mid-century modern, contemporary or farmhouse design style, it’s critical to choose a remodeler who is knowledgeable in the construction and design of the style of your home. Additionally, a company that specializes in remodeling kitchens may not be suited for a bathroom or bedroom project. Ask for Licenses and Insurance Many states, but not all, require contractors to be licensed, bonded and insured. Ask for copies of licenses and insurance certificates for any remodelers you’re considering making sure they’re current. Most states also require contractors to carry worker’s compensation, property damage and personal liability insurance for their crews. Contact your state or local licensing agencies to ensure the contractor meets the minimum requirements. Check References Once you’ve narrowed your list of potential contractors, ask for a list of references you can contact and a portfolio of work. A typical reference list includes 10 or more jobs with dates as well as the customer’s name, address and phone number, and a portfolio should also contain at least 10 projects with photos of the space before work began, during the project and after completion. If possible, also consider visiting a current job site to see first-hand how the contractor operates.

Search for Violations or Complaints Because you can’t always rely on a portfolio or references, it’s important to also check with your local consumer affairs office or the Better Business Bureau to ensure there are no complaints on record for the contractors you’re considering, which may help further narrow your list. Compare Apples to Apples While a number of different factors goes into every remodeling project, be sure all contractors you solicit bids from are using the same scope and quality of work requirements. Discuss any significant variations in price or timelines and be wary of any substantially lower estimates. Find more tips for selecting a contractor at remodelingdoneright.com.

BETTER BALANCE FOR EVERY DAY
Resolve to Make Nutritious Eating a Priority
iscovering a better version of yourself is all about striking balance. That’s especially true when it comes to making smarter food choices that you can maintain over time. A sustainable, long-term healthy eating approach, such as the Atkins low-carb lifestyle, emphasizes variety and balance. Start planning a low-carb menu filled with high-fiber carbohydrates, optimal protein and healthy fats with these tips from Colette Heimowitz, Vice President of Nutrition and Education for Atkins.
D
FILL UP WITH FIBER-RICH FOODS. Foods like vegetables, nuts, seeds, low-glycemic fruit (like berries) and whole unrefined grains are considered carbohydrates, but they don’t raise your blood sugar the way processed carbs do. Fiber slows the entry of glucose into your bloodstream so you don’t experience insulin spikes that encourage your body to produce and store body fat. Try to eat between 25-35 grams of fiber a day.
SALMON AND ASPARAGUS SHEET PAN Net carbs: 4.41 1 bunch thin spear asparagus 1 tablespoon, plus 1/4 teaspoon, extra-virgin olive oil 1/8 teaspoon salt, divided 2 salmon fillets (4 ounces each), no more than 3/4-inch thick 1 pinch black pepper 3 tablespoons olive oil-based mayonnaise 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/4 teaspoon minced or pressed garlic 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese
REDUCE INFLAMMATION. A low-carb approach eliminates refined and processed foods and sugars that can cause inflammation. Focus on foods that decrease inflammation, such as colorful low-glycemic vegetables, low-sugar fruits, protein and healthy fats such as olive oil. The ground turmeric in this Golden Milk recipe offers an easy way to fight inflammation without sacrificing flavor.
Heat oven to 425 F. Wash asparagus and remove woody ends. Place on rimmed baking sheet and toss with 1 tablespoon olive oil and pinch of salt. Arrange in single layer, leaving space for salmon. Place salmon skin-side down on sheet. Brush with remaining olive oil and season with remaining salt and pepper. Place in oven and bake 12 minutes.
KICKSTART YOUR MORNING. Start your day with a protein-packed choice such as these Chocolate Banana Protein Overnight Oats. You’ll get the omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants from the chia seeds along with protein and healthy fats to keep you energized while avoiding high-sugar breakfast alternatives.
In small bowl, combine mayonnaise, lemon juice, mustard and garlic.

Growing Prosper
New Year, Re-Engineer! Re-engineering is a popular buzz word today. Corporations use it to describe changes they are making in their market focus or their corporate structure. Basically, it means taking a look at where you are and reassessing what you can do to capitalize on what you have. And what holds true for established corporations surprisingly holds true for your established home garden. As landscape matures, things change. Trees get taller and cast deeper shade; bushes outgrow their original compactness and places in the garden. People’s lifestyles change, and that area given over to a sandbox or a swing set may no longer be needed. Or you may have purchased an older home with mature plantings that no longer work or at least they don’t satisfy you. The time comes in almost every landscape plan when “re-engineering” is the way to go!
A Fresh Look To start re-engineering a garden you have to take a hard, honest look at what you have. Because changes in the garden can happen subtly over years, you might overlook the obvious, such as an increase in shade or a physical change in your garden. For example, maybe you added a deck and now traffic patterns have changed, or you took down the swing set and the focal point of your garden is now in the wrong place, etc. Pretend you are the new owner of the house and garden you are surveying, and look at it with as much objectivity as you can.
Your Basic Game Plan Is there an orderly look to your garden, or has it just “happened” over time? Even “natural” gardens have a plan behind them that keeps them looking natural instead of wild. If there hasn’t been a plan, this is the place to start. Depending on the size of your garden and how elaborate you want to make it, you can plan it yourself or call in professional help. Even if you call in a professional, do have some plan in mind as to what you want your garden to ultimately look like. Take one area at a time
24 | WeAreProsper.com
and think about how you want that to look, and then move on to the next area. If your garden doesn’t naturally break into “areas,” think about creating them by varying garden bed sizes, shapes and what plants they will contain. You may want to add a garden bed or two, or remove some bedding areas. A planned garden doesn’t have to happen all at once. If you develop an overall plan, you can work on one or two areas at a time, and save work on other areas for later in the year or even until the next season or two.
Got Shade? In evaluating your existing garden, you may find that some plants don’t perform as well as they used to. It could be that they need more light. Consider moving these to another area of the garden and finding new shade tolerant plants to replace them. Hostas, impatiens and other shade tolerant plants can give a bright show of color where petunias or Vinca no longer perform well. If you are uncertain about how well a plant will perform in a problem area, plant one or two plants of the types you would like there (in the ground or in a container) and test them for one season. Next time around, plant more of those that did well, and test some others for future plantings. Many gardeners annually try out “new” plants on a small scale before really committing any amount of time or money to them.
Trees and Shrubs One of the biggest changes that can creep up silently on a garden is the growth of trees and shrubs. They not only grow taller and larger, but they can dramatically influence what can or can’t grow under or around them. Trees can be trimmed professionally to thin out branches and allow more light to filter through to the ground. In extreme cases, such as too many trees planted too close together, removal of some of the trees in addition to trimming may be the answer. Professional advice and service from tree experts is highly recommended for trimming and removal.
Overgrown shrubs can also be trimmed back or removed entirely if no longer desirable. As much as it hurts emotionally and as much as it can be visually unattractive for a while, a severe trimming can often rejuvenate old and woody shrubs. Fall is often a good time to do severe trimming, because the shrub may be going dormant for the winter, and will send up new shoots in the spring. Once they begin growing again you can control future shaping. For specific recommendations, ask a landscape professional.
Problem areas Almost every home has a problem area. Often it is the north side of the house, or a walkway along one side of the house, or an area behind the garage or a shed. Frequently, a simple cleanup is the first order of business. For example, once cleaned up, a dirt pathway can be spruced up with mulch or a layer of gravel and the addition of stepping stones. A north wall that never gets any sun can be brightened with containers of shade plants grouped or lined along the way. If there is an overhang, hanging baskets can be used, or they can be hung from wrought iron hooks made for baskets. Alternating tall and short containers, and varying plant types and colors can turn a formerly drab area into a Splash of Color!
Focal Points All gardens need a focal point. A small garden needs only one, and larger gardens may need several. A focal point draws the eye to a special feature or planting and helps give the rest of the garden a more orderly look. Focal points can be as simple as one spectacular plant or planting among the others, or a feature such as a gazing globe, a water pond or a piece of sculpture or statuary. In larger gardens focal points can be created for different areas. On a patio, for example, a grouping of different sized pots can serve as a focal point, with one large pot being the center of attention. Tall plants grouped in a mass and surrounded by shorter plants can create a focal point in a garden bed, as can a contrast in color or plant type.

Ornamental features such as large rocks, a pedestal, a statue or a gazing ball are natural focal points. A quick and easy feature to add to a bed is a bird bath or a bird feeder. An arbor trellis planted with climbing plants such as Carolina Jessamine can be an eye-catching focal point for an entire garden.
Color Coordination A coordinated color scheme can really pull a garden together and refresh one that may have gone a little stale. Use a combination of three or four colors to create a color theme. Match the colors in your dishes or your placemats if you eat outdoors. Red, white and blue make your garden patriotic. Pink, white and green is cool and refreshing. Yellow, blue and white are a bright summery combination. You can break the scheme every now and then when you have a great plant that doesn’t fit the “rules,” and then it becomes the exception that points out what your theme is!
Planning Ahead Re-engineering doesn’t always have to be a major undertaking. Once you have a plan in place, small adjustments every year or two will keep you from having to start from scratch. Until next time…. Happy New Year to you and YOUR GARDEN!! Jimmie

GO LONG ON GAME DAY Ready-For-Action Recipes to Feed Fans
26 | WeAreProsper.com
When game day arrives and your crowd is ready to crank up the heat, turning to appetizers and dishes that feed the whole group can help save the season. You can defend against overly complicated recipes with long cook times by instead opting for finger foods and handheld snacks that allow for more pregame prep and less cleanup after the final whistle. For example, setting up a chili bar allows for convenient eating throughout the game as it’s easy to keep warm for hours. To give your guests a variety of flavors to choose from, these recipes for baconwrapped potatoes and ribs glazed with a sweet-hot sauce involve short ingredients lists and simple preparation to keep you out of the kitchen and into the game. To find more recipe inspiration for game day, visit Culinary.net.
A PERFECT PREGAME WARMUP As one of the ultimate comfort foods, chili is an ideal watch-party snack: easy to prepare, stays warm in a slow cooker and can be personalized by guests with a wide variety of toppings. Consider adorning your bowl with a combination of these add-ons: Shredded cheese Sour cream Ketchup Hot sauce Jalapenos Green onions
Chives Olives Diced avocado Diced tomato Bacon bits Corn chips Crackers
Heat oven to 400 F. Boil potatoes until fork tender, approximately 15-20 minutes. Cut in half and allow to cool. In bowl, use spatula to combine cream cheese, cheddar, chives, salt, pepper and jalapeno, if desired. Once chilled, spread cream cheese on half of cut potatoes and sandwich each with other halves. Wrap each potato using half rasher of bacon around cut middle to ensure cheese doesn’t escape. Bake on middle rack 10 minutes. Flip and bake 10 minutes. Turn oven to broil. Broil 2 minutes turn once and broil 2 minutes until bacon reaches desired crispiness. TIP: Boil potatoes 2 days ahead. Fill and wrap potatoes 1 day ahead then bake and serve on game day.
A SWEET-HEAT SNACK Finger foods and watch parties go hand-in-hand, which is why these baby back ribs are ideal for grabbing a couple (or more) and heading to your favorite spot on the couch. Glazed with a mixture of honey, chipotle peppers and mangoes for some sweet heat, they’re cooked low and slow for fall-off-the-bone flavor. Just wrap the ribs and sauce in aluminum foil, place over low indirect heat and let your grill do the work. To help simplify game day, try cooking a day in advance and warm in the oven a couple hours prior to kickoff. Find more game day recipes at honey.com.
SCORE BIG WITH LITTLE POTATOES Part of the fun of the Big Game is the food, and you can score big points by serving up crowd-pleasing sides and snacks. For a familiar spin on a football-watching favorite, try these Pigskin Potatoes: a classic combination of little potatoes and melted cheese wrapped with bacon. There’s no fumbling around with this game day snack made with Creamer potatoes from The Little Potato Company. With no washing or peeling required, little potatoes cook in next to no time whether they are boiled, roasted or smashed. You can be the MVP of your kitchen without missing a second of the action.

7 New Year Basics By Madison Johnson
Coming into the New Year, there are so many different things to be stressed about. What you are wearing shouldn’t be one of those things. Fashion trends are constantly changing…so having some everyday basics are essential to any woman’s closet. Your closet should be saturated with staple items to support all fashion trends throughout the months. Here are seven of the most needed clothing items that never go out of style!
Quality Denim
Every woman needs two or three pairs of sturdy jeans. Light wash, dark wash, and black jeans are essential to all closets. And investing in a nicer pair of jeans from brands like Hollister or Buckle is strongly suggested. When getting a nicer—more expensive jean, the quality and wear will be much longer than a cheaper pair that will rip and wear out after just a few short years. Investing in a few more high brand jeans will justify that big purchase!
Plain Tee’s
A white t-shirt will never go out of style. Plain and basic t-shirts should always be in your closet. Paired with the newest trendy skirts or your trusty denim jeans, it can always complete an outfit. These basic tops can be styled any way on any day of the week for any occasion. Having multiples of this are a must have!
Hoop Earrings
Hoop earrings make a statement without being too loud. The size choice of your hoops are endless and they add a stylish touch to bring your outfit together. Hoops have been in style for decades upon decades and they aren’t going anywhere!
Leather Jacket
Another good investment to add to your closet, a leather jacket can spice up any outfit. Throw on a brown leather jacket over your basic white t-shirt and your favorite pair of denim. Adding a black leather jacket can add an extra edgy style to your outfit. Although it is another expensive investment, a good leather jacket can last you through the decade and even longer.
Little Black Dress
The classic little black dress. Every woman needs their idea of the perfect black dress in their closet. Finding the perfect dress that flatters your body type will have you wanting to wear this dress to any formal event you attend. Confidence is key when selecting your outfit, and with a slimming black dress it will do just the trick!
Heeled Booties
For an everyday outfit, a pair of black or brown heeled sock booties are the core essential. You can wear heeled booties with any outfit, from casual to dressy, it fits all criteria. Pair them with a silk blouse and a pair of jeans or a turtleneck sweater and a patterned a-line skirt. A pair of booties can complement and blend with any styled outfit.
Structured Blazers
A classic blazer is an item that you can always count on. It can be layered on top to complete an outfit for lunch with your friends or a business meeting. A trendy blazer takes a basic outfit to the next level and adds some character.

Winter Skin Care 101 Cold weather can take a real toll on your skin. Dry skin can lead to discomfort and, if neglected, can affect your skin’s elasticity and trigger outbreaks of irritated skin. Help keep your skin feeling healthy and hydrated this winter with these tips: Drink water. Hydrating your body from the inside out plays an important role in keeping skin supple and soft. When you’re dehydrated, the body pulls water from any source it can, including your skin. A good rule of thumb is at least 8 cups of water a day. Hydrate with food. You can also boost your internal water reserves by eating foods rich in water, nutrients, vitamins and beneficial fats and oils. Fish, nuts and avocados all contain plenty of essential nutrients that help promote well-hydrated skin. Foods like cucumber, zucchini, lettuce and watermelon also naturally have a high concentration of water. Use body lotion. Your skin naturally loses moisture throughout the day through evaporation, but you can help trap the hydration you add from bathing by adding a layer of quality lotion. An option like Remedy Dermatology Series Moisturizing Body Lotion contains a proprietary botanical blend of nutrients, emollients and antioxidants, including green tea, clove and safflower oleosomes. Its smooth, rich formula absorbs quickly, leaving skin feeling soft with no greasy or oily residue. Formulated by skin care experts, the lotion helps skin stay moisturized for up to 24 hours and is free of 80 of the most common allergens that contribute to rashes and skin sensitivity. Learn more at remedyderm. com. Protect skin. Exposure to harsh weather can quickly dry and chap your skin, so any time you’ll be outdoors, especially for extended periods of time, be sure to cover up exposed areas. Keep an extra set of gloves and a scarf in your vehicle so you’re prepared for unexpected time outdoors, whether from an accident or impromptu stop at a local park for some fresh air and exercise.
Change out of wet clothes. Always remove wet clothes as soon as possible. Not only do cold, wet clothes affect your body’s ability to regulate internal temperature, they can create friction that leads to uncomfortable and painful skin irritation. If getting wet is unavoidable, consider layering your clothing so you can shed wet outer layers quickly before they can soak through. Use a humidifier. The indoor climate becomes considerably drier in the winter months when the furnace runs regularly. Using a humidifier can help restore a level of humidity that’s better for your skin. Aim for humidity levels in the range of 35-50%; depending on your climate, you may need to err on the lower side of the scale to reduce condensation on windows. Wear sunscreen. Winter sun rays are just as strong as summer rays, even if you don’t feel their heat quite as much. In fact, snow burns that result from sun reflecting off the snow can be even more dangerous than regular sunburns. Protect your skin from burning and drying out by using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 any time you venture outdoors.
Lotion Do’s and Don’ts
Do use lotion, even when your skin doesn’t feel dry. Experts say you should apply moisturizer onto damp skin to help lock in any water sitting on the surface before it evaporates. Don’t use too much. Quality moisturizers are highly concentrated and designed to be effective without a thick layer. If you use too much, it’s more likely to sit on the surface of your skin, occlude the surface and potentially trigger breakouts. Do look for products that match your skin type. While there are common allergens that are present in many lotions, an option like Remedy Dermatology Series Moisturizing Body Lotion is free of parabens, fragrances and aloe that can irritate sensitive skin or allergies.
